What Does Service Awd Mean on a Dodge Journey : Unveiling the Power Within

If you own a Dodge Journey, you may have come across the term “Service AWD” at some point. But what does it actually mean and why is it important? In this blog post, we will delve into the meaning and significance of Service AWD on a Dodge Journey.

The Basics of AWD

Before we dive into the “Service AWD” message, let’s briefly touch upon what AWD stands for. AWD stands for All-Wheel Drive, which is a drivetrain configuration that aims to provide power to all four wheels of the vehicle simultaneously. Unlike traditional two-wheel drive systems, AWD offers enhanced traction and stability, making it ideal for various driving conditions such as snow, ice, and off-road terrains.

Now that we have a basic understanding of AWD, let’s move on to decoding the “Service AWD” message on your Dodge Journey.

What Does “Service AWD” Mean?

“Service AWD” is an indication that there is an issue or fault with the All-Wheel Drive system in your Dodge Journey. When this message appears on your vehicle’s dashboard, it means that the AWD system has detected a problem and requires attention from a qualified technician.

The issues that can trigger the “Service AWD” message can vary, ranging from minor concerns to more significant problems. Although it can be tempting to ignore the message or dismiss it as a temporary glitch, it is crucial to take immediate action and address the underlying issue.

Possible Causes for the “Service AWD” Message

There are several potential reasons why your Dodge Journey’s AWD system may be signaling a “Service AWD” message. Some of the common causes include:

  • Malfunctioning wheel speed sensors
  • Problems with the AWD control module
  • Issues with the differential or transfer case
  • Worn-out or damaged drivetrain components
  • Electrical or wiring problems

It is important to note that diagnosing the exact cause of the “Service AWD” message requires proper diagnostics equipment and expertise. Therefore, it is advisable to take your Dodge Journey to an authorized service center or dealership where trained technicians can accurately diagnose and resolve the issue.

Consequences of Ignoring the “Service AWD” Message

While it may be tempting to ignore the “Service AWD” message, it is not recommended. Ignoring this message can lead to further damage and negatively impact the performance and safety of your Dodge Journey.

Continuing to drive with a faulty AWD system can result in decreased traction, poor handling, and ultimately compromise the vehicle’s ability to navigate adverse road conditions. Additionally, ignoring the “Service AWD” message may lead to more expensive repairs down the line.

New cause for Service AWD light, ABS and traction control light to come on

Canadian paul.

Very recently, all three came on again on the way home. I thought it would be the typical wheel speed sensor thing and I gave it some time to hopefully dry up and clear out. When the lights wouldn't go away, I brought it into my indy mechanic. He scanned the computer and found out that not enough power was being sent from the battery to the one sensor (driver's side rear). He followed the wire and found that the wire bundle that comes through the floor rubbed up against the actual opening and over time, broke. He repaired it but before he began, he called up the local Chrysler dealer if they ever encountered something like this and they initially said no. But when he finished the job, they called back and said that it does happen. So everyone be aware of this predicament and solution.

Canadian Paul,

Welcome to the forum!!!

Great information for other members, I've taken a look to see if I could identify other common cases but didn't come up with anything.

Looking at the diagram though, I can see how this is possible. Unlikely but possible.

Thanks for sharing, great info. and might save someone a big headache down the road.

Feel free to PM me anytime if you need any help.

So I also have ran into the same issues, actually many issues with my journey, most recently the AWD, ESP BAS, traction control and ABS lights have come on, at first it would come on and go off very intermittently now they are on all the time, when they were intermittent the dealer plugged it in and there were no codes for this issue, has anyone experienced the same problem?

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear you're having these issues... Now that the MILs are on all the time, have you had the opportunity to visit your dealer to have the vehicle scanned?

Intermittent issues can be difficult to identify however it may be much easier now.

Could be a bad sensor tripping the lights.

Please keep us posted if you have a chance to get to your dealer for an inspection.

Good post. My R/T (53k KMS) did just that today to/from downtrown Montreal. I just drove it again around the block and no sign of it. I will remember to take a photo of the warning light if it comes back on and will bring a copy of your post with me to the garage. thanks.

UPDATE: problem solved/fixed...back to normal. Exact cxase as you described above and your post reaklly helped. Thanks

Happy to hear you got it sorted out, thanks for the update!

I have 40,000 miles on my 2013 Dodge Journey and a host of ABS , traction control, and low air pressure lights. This is really aggravating. Any idea of what might be causing this and how much to have it repaired

Thanks for any ideas and response

no way to tell what is the problem from here you need to get it to a dealership for an explanation on what might be the problem

Take the time and read the posts above your question

There could be a whole bunch of reasons

Dealer can help.

More than likely a wheel  speed sensor causing the ABS  and TRACS lights to illuminate, but not the low tire  light, Wheel speed sensors usually run about $200.00 installed. The only sure way to know is to get it to your dealer for diagnosis.

My 2014 Journey has this issue. The ABS , Traction Control, and Service AWD lights are on. I also know I have a wheel  hub going bad and is the likely cause. I will be replacing the hub and sensor tomorrow. However, I wanted to know if anyone else has had wheel  hub issues on their Journey. This is the third wheel  hub. The original went at 40K miles. The replacement lasted for for another 30 and it went bad. I know the reason that one went bad, because I was given the incorrect torque. The third one I put on I was given the correct torque (I looked at the screen myself to verify) and I now have 130K miles on the vehicle with ANOTHER bad hub. It's the exact same one, the right side rear. Any thoughts?

what kind of parts used mopar,or part store brand? since it is the same one i would assume something else is putting extra stress on it, keep us informed.

I used a part store brand. I believe I have discovered the problem. I kept getting information about the torque for the axle nut . I was given the torque rating for the front, not the rear. I replaced the hub today and now my ABS , Traction Control, and Service AWD lights are off. Problem fixed.

  • 1 year later...

Hi everyone I'm new. I live in NC and recently within the last week, had these lights  come on, I'm happy they weren't on when I had my state inspection, I would've failed. I had 3 tires replaced and 1 where the tread is still great. The day these lights  came on was the day I went to get my 3rd tire , I couldn't afford all 3 at once, but when I got paid about a week later I got the new one. We've had bad weather here and the day after 1 storm was when 2 lights  came on. Then soon after the service AWD light  came on. So traction  control, AWD, ABS lights.  They've been off only about twice. I have noticed recently that when I tried to lightly put my foot on the gas to get out of Wal-Mart's parking lot, it was having issues like I couldn't get moving quick enough, I was in the single digits before I pulled into an empty space and shut everything off and waited. I sat in my Journey for 5 minutes or so with 3 kids in the humidity because I didn't and still don't know wtheck is going on. It was fine after I turned it back on. The next day I had to go out again and I discovered the tire  pressure was crazy high for 2 in the front(39psi) and the back 2 were either 38 or 37 psi. I made all 4 tire s the same pressure and the lights  came off. Now they are on. I'm worried because I have 3 kids and being a single mom I don't know how much it will cost to fix and how long it would take to fix it. Around here places take advantage of women and rip them off. So I'm on my own either way. I don't know if I should take it to a Dodge  Dealership or to a chain store type business that deals in mechanics. I don't even know if they'd even just check it without me having to pay. I know someone who has a really nice code reader and no codes came up. Any advice would be appreciated. I live in a somewhat rural area and have to travel for my kid's appointments and football. I've never experienced this in my other Dodge  and new tires, but this SXT hadn't had new tires and it was time.  Any advice would be appreciated. It stormed so bad on a late drive home (my 1 son has DS and he was sick so we left urgent care at 1020pm our appt was for 830pm) that I was so worried because most of the roads were black top. Thank you in advance

I believe the AWD system requires all 4 tire s to be replaced at the same time because they all have to be the same spec wise or people have experienced  the issues you are having

They are the same brand size etc. So what's the recommendation or advice that's not going to cut a chunk out of my already tight budget

Sorry dont know what to tell you....

It takes money to own and operate a vehicle and they are a very complex and need diagnosis from people who know what they are doing.

Maybe someone on here knows more...good luck

11 hours ago, SoSassy84 said: They are the same brand size etc. So what's the recommendation or advice that's not going to cut a chunk out of my already tight budget

If all 4 tire s are now new and the same size, perhaps disconnecting the battery  for a bit will reset everything. Otherwise, it takes a special scan tool to read the codes causing those light s which means a dealer trip unless you know someone who has such a tool. Good luck and be sure to post back what you find.

It's probably just a sensor, traction control needs the ABS sensor to fonction properly so if one of your ABS sensor is bad that's why you have both light s ON. As all said, you need an OBD II reader to know which one failed or what is the cause for the light s to be on. With the codes it will be easier to know what to do, changing ABS sensor is pretty easy if that's your problem and the sensor itself is not expensive. But again you need to at least get someone to the read the codes. I wouldn't go the the dealer just for reading codes but that's just me .... I bought on eBay and OBD II reader that plug's in a computer (replicate one of the old version) for 5 bucks, it's not genuine but it's work as intended on the dodge Journey mine is a 2011. Be prepared cause DJ may cost you some money to own. It's a nice car but you need to do some yourself.

I never said I didn't have the money. I don't have the money to get ripped off, large army base, it happens.

You’ve likely got a faulty wheel speed sensor . You’ll need to have the vehicle scanned for codes to determine which one. Each of the four wheels has a sensor. If any one sensor fails, the ABS and traction control systems will be disabled as well as the AWD.

Service All Wheel Drive System Message: Causes and Fixes

Service All Wheel Drive System

A ‘service all-wheel drive system’ message is a sign of an issue with the all-wheel drive system. The issue could have been set off by something as little as installing an incorrect tire size or a low battery. A worn or contaminated rear differential fluid is also something you should check. A bad control module and corroded terminals are also possible culprits.

All-Wheel Drive System and “Service AWD System” Warning

The AWD system transfers power between all four wheels to maintain vehicle traction. It uses a driveshaft to distribute the engine power between the front and rear wheels.

A ‘service all-wheel drive system’ warning indicates that the AWD system is disabled. And only the front wheels will be powering the vehicle.

The warning could stay on or flash intermittently. But it is usually accompanied by a beeping sound. And it is common but not limited to General Motors vehicles.

Causes and Possible Fixes of the ‘Service All Wheel Drive System’ Message

The AWD warning is often activated because of an issue with the rear differential system.  But, the breakdown of other components could also set off the warning.

Low battery

You should start by inspecting the battery power whenever you notice the AWD warning.  The AWD system relies on the battery charge to stay operational. And anytime the battery voltage drops below 9 volts, the AWD system disables the rear wheels. It also activates the “service all wheel drive system” warning to alert the driver.

And if a defective or low battery indeed triggered the warning, a system scan will reveal a C0550 error code. The system will record the diagnostic code either as a stored or pending DTC.

Solving this problem is quite straightforward. If the battery is bad, replacing it will solve the problem. But if it is still in good condition, you should inspect your electrical system for a parasitic draw.

Something as minute as the tire can also turn on the “service all wheel drive system” warning. Installing an incorrect tire size or not replacing all four tires simultaneously can prompt the message. Both instances confuse the traction control system, causing premature wear of the drivetrain.

The AWD system will trigger the “service all wheel drive system” message to alert the driver. Thus, the correct tire size must be installed at all times.  And when replacing any tire, you must change all four, so you don’t confuse the traction control system.

Corroded connectors

A corroded rear differential harness or control module connector could activate the warning. The rear differential system has a control module in charge of the system’s operation.  The rear differential harness connects to the control module connector.

Exposing the wiring harness or control module connector to water creates corrosion. The corrosion gradually eats away the connector pins causing the breakdown in connection.

The break in transmission triggers the AWD system warning. A good preventive measure is to slather some di-electric grease on the connectors. But if the corrosion has done the damage, you’ll have to replace the connectors.

Faulty control module

The bad control module is another culprit that can set off the “service all wheel drive system” light. Like the connectors, exposing the control module to liquid can short it.

Clean the control module immediately after it comes in contact with water. And slather some di-electric grease on it to prevent it from shorting out. Once the control module goes bad, the only solution is to replace the module.

Overheated clutch control assembly

An overheated rear differential clutch assembly can also trigger the warning. The clutch control assembly transfers torque to the rear axle. The clutch assembly has a sensor that monitors the temperature to ensure it is within the range of -40°C to +120°C.

The AWD system disables the rear wheels anytime the clutch assembly overheats. This triggers the  “Service All Wheel Drive System” on the dashboard. The rear wheels will reactivate when the temperature is back within range. The warning will also go away after a couple of drive cycles.

Contaminated rear differential fluid

The rear differential is divided into the clutch assembly and the ring gear segment. A seal separates both segments and prevents their different fluids from mixing.

General Motors recommends replacing the fluids every 150,000 miles. The AWD warning may pop up when the fluids become dirty after an extended period of use.

You will also get a warning if the seal separating both segments fails. The seal’s failure allows the fluid from both segments to mix. This disrupts the proper functioning of the rear differential system.

Replacing the fluids at the recommended interval will help keep the system running. Moreover, servicing the fluid is much cheaper than replacing warped components. For the rear differential seal, you’ll have to replace it once it fails.

How to Tackle the ‘Service All-Wheel Drive System’ Warning

You should scan your vehicle for error codes to narrow down the source when you get the warning. A basic OBD scanner cannot pull up trouble codes for a ‘service all-wheel drive system’ warning.

You’ll need a scanner that can communicate with the AWD system. Once you detect the cause of the problem, you can proceed to solve it. But you should know that dealing with an AWD system issue can be complex, even for a regular DIYer. So. you may want to use the services of a mechanic to avoid causing more damage to the system.

Final thoughts

The vehicle switches to two-wheel drive the instant the AWD warning pops up on the dashboard. The warning is often set off because of an issue with the rear differential system. But other factors, such as using incorrect tire size or a low battery, can also trigger the warning.

What Does Service AWD Mean On a Dodge Journey

Service awd on a dodge journey stands for “all-wheel drive” service. In simpler terms, it means that the car is equipped with a system that allows power to be distributed to all four wheels for better traction and handling in various driving conditions.

All-wheel drive systems are particularly useful in snowy or slippery conditions, but can offer advantages in other driving scenarios as well. The dodge journey is a popular crossover suv that has an available all-wheel drive option for drivers who want enhanced grip and stability on the road.

In this article, we’ll explore what service awd means on a dodge journey and why it’s an important feature to consider when buying a car. We’ll also look at the different types of all-wheel drive systems and how they work.

Understanding All-Wheel Drive (AWD) in Dodge Journey

Credit: www.autoweek.com

How Awd Works In Dodge Journey

Awd, or all-wheel drive, refers to a drivetrain system that powers all four wheels of a vehicle. There are different types of awd systems, including full-time, part-time, and automatic. In the dodge journey, awd is an optional feature that allows for improved traction and stability on slippery roads.

The awd system in the journey operates by constantly monitoring road conditions and distributing power to the wheels with the most traction. This means that, in normal conditions, power is mainly sent to the front wheels, but when slippage is detected, power is immediately sent to the rear wheels.

The result is improved handling and performance, making the dodge journey a great choice for drivers looking for a comfortable and capable crossover suv.

Importance Of Servicing Awd

The awd (all-wheel drive) mechanism in dodge journey is a crucial component that helps in enhancing the vehicle’s performance. Regular servicing of awd not only improves fuel efficiency but also ensures smooth driving experience. Neglecting awd maintenance can lead to severe consequences such as poor handling, high fuel consumption, and even complete failure.

Therefore, it is imperative to service awd periodically to optimize its performance. Poorly maintained awd can lead to severe accidents, and hence it’s essential to get it checked by experts from time to time. In case you observe any abnormality in your dodge journey’s awd, don’t hesitate to get it checked.

2017 Dodge Journey

2017 dodge journey

Select a year

  • Lows Underpowered engines, ponderous handling, lack of technology.
  • Verdict The Journey is a practical choice for families on a tight budget, but rival crossovers beat it in most key areas.

Introduced nearly a decade ago, the aging mid-size Journey has survived this long thanks to its affordability and practicality, but it’s decidedly lacking in the latest technology and safety equipment. Despite the availability of five trim packages, the choice of inline-four and V-6 engines, front- or all-wheel drive, and five- or seven-passenger seating, the Journey is just not truly competitive with the best family crossovers. It’s only worth considering if there’s a steep discount working in your favor.

What's New for 2017?

Not much. Other than a few new paint colors, the Journey’s biggest update this year was the renaming of its top trim level from R/T to GT.

Original MSRP:

  • SE: $22,290
  • SXT: $26,590
  • Crossroad: $28,090
  • Crossroad Plus: $29,835
  • GT: $33,090

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base Journey comes with an underpowered 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an ancient four-speed automatic transmission that’s best avoided. We can confidently say that its 173 horsepower isn't enough to adequately power this two-ton SUV. Even the 283-hp V-6 model is slower than most rivals. The bigger engine is punchy enough for everyday driving, but its six-speed automatic transmission is sometimes slow on the uptake when you request more power, hampering the Journey’s responsiveness. Front-wheel drive is standard with either engine; all-wheel drive is optional on the V-6 and not available with the inline-four. The Journey’s numb, ponderous handling leaves it wallowing in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of its soft suspension, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway.

Fuel Economy

Interior, comfort, and cargo.

The Journey’s cabin is far from upscale, and fitting anyone in the third row—even children—requires compromises from those in the second row. Cheap-feeling bits, such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels, are especially egregious in higher-trim Journeys. Several luxury features, including a power-adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are notable in their absence from the options list. Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable, and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends, even if its total cargo capacity isn’t as large as some rivals.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Journey comes with the same easy-to-use Uconnect touchscreen as many other Dodge products. However, only the optional system, with its larger screen, incorporates the latest connectivity features. The Journey’s standard infotainment setup has a small 4.3-inch touchscreen with only the basics: AM/FM radio, a USB port, and an auxiliary audio jack. We’d choose the optional 8.4-inch touchscreen, which has much larger touch zones and more available features, including optional navigation, voice command, and Bluetooth connectivity. Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto is offered, and there’s only a a single USB port up front.

Scheduled Maintenance for Your 2017 Dodge Journey

What is the recommended maintenance schedule for the 2017 Dodge Journey?

What to Know About 2017 Dodge Journey Scheduled Maintenance

Take care of your Dodge Journey and it'll take care of you. If you put in the effort to keep up with proper maintenance , your Journey could be on the road well past the 200,000 mile mark. So, you want to care for your car, but you’re not sure when to get certain services. It can be overwhelming, but fortunately, there’s a resource that takes the guesswork out of routine Journey maintenance. Rely on the recommended maintenance schedule that’s been created just for your 2017 Dodge Journey!

Dodge knows your vehicle inside and out (they made it, after all!), so they’ve designed this schedule with your car’s unique needs in mind. Driving conditions, climate variations, and other variables can affect which scheduled maintenance services you’ll need; however, recommended maintenance usually includes services like fluid exchanges, filter changes, new brake pads, oil changes, and tire rotations. Staying on track with routine service appointments can help your Journey perform better, increase your vehicle safety, and prevent common 2017 Dodge Journey problems.

Essential Maintenance to Keep Your Dodge Journey Running Newer, Longer

Come to Firestone Complete Auto Care for manufacturer-recommended routine maintenance on your 2017 Dodge Journey and a skilled technician will start the appointment with a Courtesy Check. A Courtesy Check helps "set the stage" for your service and catch any small problems before they turn into big repairs. Every Courtesy Check will include a visual inspection of your Journey. We’ll check your head and tail lights, fluid levels, filters, tires (and their alignment!), and windshield wiper blades. We’ll also perform a free battery check to determine your battery’s charge level.

Maybe it's time to find a new auto battery for your 2017 Dodge Journey. If your current battery is more than three years old, it may be time for a replacement (batteries typically last somewhere between three and five years). Depending on the climate where you live and your habits while driving, your Journey may need a replacement battery sooner. Short trips and extreme temperatures can shorten the overall life expectancy of your Dodge Journey battery. Sure, you could wait until your battery is completely dead, but it’s a much wiser decision to replace it before you need to. If you keep driving on a battery that can't hold a charge, you run the risk of being stranded when your battery finally gives out (and no one can predict where that might be!). Your Dodge Journey won’t even be able to start with a weak battery, much less get you where you need to go.

Staying on schedule for battery replacements and motor oil changes can support your engine’s overall performance and keep your 2017 Dodge Journey running newer, longer. To learn how often Dodge recommends you have the oil changed in your 2017 Journey, check out the information table at the beginning of this page. Don’t forget, though, that weather conditions in your area or your personal driving habits can affect this interval. Talk to a Firestone Complete Auto Care technician to know when to change your oil. We'll also help you understand what type of oil to use for your 2017 Dodge Journey.

Periodic service to the steering system in your Dodge Journey can not only ensure a smooth ride; it can also help you maintain control of your car in compromised road conditions. Don’t let a misalignment or pulling steering wheel put you in danger. You can count on Firestone Complete Auto Care’s trained technicians to inspect this system and, if needed, provide Dodge Journey steering and suspension services including wheel alignment, strut replacement, power steering fluid changes, ball joint lubrication, and wheel bearing replacement. Prevent damage or premature wear and tear on your Dodge Journey's steering system with regular maintenance.

If you skip recommended Dodge Journey services, you might find yourself with a hot mess on your hands – quite literally. A damaged A/C system is never fun, and an overheated engine can cause significant issues (like a total car breakdown!). We can help you with all those issues. Our technicians have the knowledge and tools to repair and maintain the heating and cooling systems for your Dodge Journey’s engine, and we can service your A/C system, too. Is your Dodge Journey radiator in need of replacement? We got it. A/C smelling musty? We'll fix it. Firestone Complete Auto Care is the place to go for 2017 Dodge Journey maintenance.

Don’t wait until something goes wrong with your car. Visit your nearest location for proactive maintenance today.

2017 Dodge Journey Maintenance Questions

Take an active role in maintaining your 2017 Dodge Journey. Get answers to common Dodge Journey maintenance questions and learn more about caring for your vehicle.

  • When should I have Dodge Journey alignment checked? Watch out for pothole damage. If your 2017 Journey is pulling to one side or the other, your tires or suspension system could be calling out for help.
  • When should I use high mileage oil in my Dodge Journey? If your Dodge Journey has ticked past 75,000 miles, consider switching to high mileage oil at your next oil change to give your engine what it needs to go another 75,000 (or more!). High mileage oil: make it a high priority!
  • Can Dodge dashboard warning lights wait? Don't ignore dashboard warning lights! Bring your Dodge Journey in for a diagnostic code scan as soon as a dashboard warning light flashes on, whether it's your check engine or battery light. Dashboard lights alert you to trouble under the hood.

SERVICE AWD Light - c147b code

service awd dodge journey 2017

  • Add to quote

2011 R/T Plus AWD with about 89000 miles. SERVICE AWD light has come on periodically and most recently last night after making a left-hand turn while using the auto stick. When the SERV AWD light comes on the AWD system does not work - rear-wheel drive only. When I turn the car off and restart the light is off and the system seems to reset - until the next event that triggers the SERV AWD light. Just had it in the shop last week for the same issue. The system had stored code c147b - front axle disconnect circuit. Techs at the shop were unable to duplicate the error while there after driving 15 miles with auto stick. They did check the associated wiring and connections and said everything looked ok. They cleared the code and then it came back on last night. I also had it come on once when I turned on the wipers in a rain storm. So the question is how do I fix this error code problem? Replace the sensor? Replace the drive train control module (DTCM)? And by the way - where the heck is the sensor and DTCM actually located? Is this something a DIY can do or does it need a flash of some kind? Not critical right now but want to fix the issue before winter. Any TSB related to this in Chargers? I found some references to RAM trucks with similar issues pre-2009. Coming up with little to no useful information after an Internet search. Anyone? Sent from AutoGuide.com Free App

  • This bulletin involves flash reprogramming the Drive Train Control Module (DTCM) with new software.
  • 2011 (LD) Charger
  • 2011 (LX) 300
  • NOTE: This Service Bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with All Wheel Drive (sales code DKB).
  • Some customers may get a “Service 4WD” light in the Cabin Compartment Node (CCN). Upon further investigation the Technician may find that C1078 -Tire Revolutions Range Performance diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is set in the DTCM. This condition may occur when driving on a slippery road and the AWD system is monitoring for slipping wheels. Under these conditions the AWD system may incorrectly determining that one wheel is spinning too much. When the AWD system detects this, it shuts down the AWD capability for the remainder of the drive cycle. The system is overly sensitive to wheel slip and may set this DTC when no issue is present. The system was re-calibrated to allow more wheel slip before setting this DTC. This condition is not monitored when operating in 2WD mode. Updating the DTCM software will correct the conditions above."

Kori, Thanks, this seems related. My car has been into the dealer many times since that bulletin was released so I'm thinking that flash would have already been done at some point, except that I had not indicated this issue before. I have a note indicating the c147b but I'll have to ask them if the C1078 showed up in the stored DTCs. It wasn't mentioned to me. The bulletin describes conditions that seem to follow my situation right now. The description looks to be on target. Going by the shop tomorrow and will see what they pull up this time. Thank you. Closest I've seen to an explanation yet.

Great! I hope it helps! Keep me posted and let me know if you'd like me to follow up with the dealership as well. Kori Dodge Social Care Specialist

Update - Shop got the chance to read an active code for the "SERV AWD" light that came up on Wed. Still comes up as a c147b code - Front axle disconnect sensor circuit performance. Relay test, wires and related components checked and appear to be ok. Warning reset when I restarted the car. No DTC last two days but I haven't used the auto stick last 2 trips. I fully expect it will come up again next time I use the auto stick. Kori - No C1078 codes in the history.

Most recent update: Culprit seems to be the "front axle disconnect solenoid". Took multiple trips to shop to figure that out. So I guess I need one of these: ACTUATOR. Axle Locker. For your 2011 Dodge Charger R/T Part Number: 68052258AA Includes Axle Disconnect Actuator and Solenoid. Not sure I need the actuator - just the solenoid. Not sure if that comes separate or not.

Yup, that's it. Replaced on Friday. Part made by Warn. So far so good. No more SERV AWD light. After I got back home I received a Recall notice in the mail from the factory for the alternator diode malfunction - but no parts available........SMH

Did they have to flash anything with the replacement?? I have the new solenoid in my trunk but leery of them in the computer...I get 29 hwy and 22 city so awd isn't high on the priority list!!

service awd dodge journey 2017

From Googling around, looks like a $125-$150 part. I had wondered if the disconnect was on the T case end, or the axle end. Looks to me like it is at the differential, thereby disconnecting the driveshaft there. Don

Hey Sneaky RT, I’ve got the same service AWD light as you had. My charger’s currently in 2WD when it should be in AWD. Any ideas on how to fix?

X 2 on the front axle disconnect (or actuator) being bad. Don

has anyone done this replacement themselves, curious if I can do it at home. I bought a scan tool that reads powertrain and abs codes, hoping it might throw a simple wheel sensor code, but I got nothing. Now im grasping at straws here, snow is coming, actually here. And I'm gonna replace my fluids this weekend and prolly try to replace the solenoid and actuator. Just hoping its something I can do. The dealership is all booked up for awhile, and they wont do scan work or other than oil changes and stuff on saturdays. But I work second shift so all I have is saturday and my charger is my only car.

service awd dodge journey 2017

Did you ever get an answer as to whether or not it is something you could do yourself? I think replacing the actuator would solve my problem too. Tia

Since nobody had ever replied with how easy/hard this is - I went checking before doing mine, and there's a 3 min youtube video that shows it. It's accessible and fairly easy to do

Full Edmunds Review: 2017 Dodge Journey SUV

service awd dodge journey 2017

Vehicle overview

The 2017 Dodge Journey soldiers on as a relic of the past in many ways. This affordable crossover with available three-row seating debuted back in 2009, and it hasn't received a full redesign since. Its advancing age is most apparent in the engine bay, where the Journey's base engine is getting on in years and lacks the efficiency, refinement and oomph of its more modern counterparts. It also comes paired with an outdated four-speed automatic transmission; smooth-shifting six-speed automatics are now the norm. You can also find fault in the way the Journey drives, as the Journey feels soft and ponderous around turns that most rivals would handle deftly.

One bright spot is the optional V6 engine. So equipped, the Journey accelerates more assertively than most budget-priced crossovers, and fuel economy is barely affected. Throw in the available 8.4-inch touchscreen — a longtime favorite of ours — and the optional third-row seat and rear entertainment system, and you've got a pretty satisfying family vehicle that should still cost less than you expect.

Overall, though, the Journey remains a decidedly mixed bag, so we recommend taking a close look at other models. Our top pick among similar vehicles would be the Kia Sorento. Although it can get rather pricey, it also comes in two- or three-row specification and offers superior handling, features and interior refinement. If you don't need three rows, we'd point you to just about any other roomy small crossover SUV, including perennial favorites such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4.

Every 2017 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats are optional. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are also available, but common safety technologies such as blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning are not offered.

In Edmunds brake testing, a front-wheel-drive, V6-equipped Journey came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet, an average performance for this class.

In government crash testing, the Journey received four out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars for front-impact crash protection and five stars for side-crash protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Journey received the top score of Good in the moderate-overlap front-impact, side-impact, roof strength and head restraint (whiplash protection) tests. In the agency's small-overlap front-impact test, however, the Journey received the lowest rating of Poor.

2017 Dodge Journey models

The SE comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, roof rails, heated mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, cruise control, dual-zone manual climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining second-row seat, a 4.3-inch touchscreen, and a six-speaker sound system with a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack.

Optional for the SE (standard with AWD) is the Flexible Seating package, which adds a 50/50-split third row and tri-zone manual climate control.

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a unique front fascia, LED taillights (also standard on the SE AWD), body-colored exterior mirrors and the Flexible Seating package.

The Crossroad adds 19-inch wheels, gloss black and chrome exterior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth and satellite radio.

The Crossroad Plus expands upon the Crossroad's feature content with tri-zone automatic climate control, LED interior lighting, leather upholstery with mesh inserts, a six-way power driver seat (with four-way power lumbar adjustment), a fold-flat front passenger seat with a hidden storage bin, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, an in-dash DVD player, an SD card slot and a cargo net.

The GT adds the V6 engine as standard, plus different 19-inch wheels, remote engine start, a body-color grille, a sport-tuned suspension, automatic headlights, perforated leather upholstery with red stitching, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an interior observation mirror, a premium audio system with a subwoofer and a 115-volt power outlet.

Many features on the upper trim levels are available on lower trims via option packages. Other available features (depending on trim) include the Blacktop package (gloss black 19-inch wheels, grille and exterior trim), a sunroof, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, integrated second-row child booster seats, a rear-seat entertainment system and a navigation system.

By default, the 2017 Dodge Journey SE, SXT, Crossroad and Crossroad Plus come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 hp and 166 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg combined (19 city/25 highway), a decidedly subpar rating for a four-cylinder crosstour.

Optional on those trims and standard on the GT is a 3.6-liter V6. It's good for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft and is matched to a six-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is standard with the V6 unless you get the GT, which offers either FWD or AWD. The front-wheel-drive GT returns 19 mpg combined (17 city/25 highway), while the AWD V6 models get a similar 19 mpg combined (16 city/24 highway).

We recorded a 7.8-second 0-60-mph time in a front-drive, V6-equipped Journey, which is a sluggish showing given this engine's output ratings. Still, the V6 gives you plenty of punch in most situations.

The 2017 Dodge Journey has two personalities, depending on which engine you choose. The four-cylinder engine is noisy and really doesn't have enough power to get this crossover moving with any sense of urgency, especially when loaded up with passengers. The outdated four-speed automatic transmission can be clunky in normal operation, and it does the Journey no favors in the fuel economy department, either. Accordingly, we'd avoid the four-cylinder entirely and step up to the 3.6-liter V6, which gives you the power you're going to want. Unfortunately, the V6's six-speed automatic transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift is needed.

Around town, the Journey rides smoothly over rough pavement and bumps. However, the steering is on the slow side, and you might find yourself having to make more hand movements than you'd like. When driven harder through turns, the Journey's body leans noticeably. Overall, the Journey feels heavier than many other crossovers and doesn't inspire much driver confidence.

The 2017 Journey's cabin provides generally pleasing materials and textures for the price, while the gauges and dashboard have a functional and contemporary design. In general, Dodge has done a nice job of keeping the Journey's innards up-to-date despite the vehicle's advanced age. Moreover, the available Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment interface is one of the best in the business, thanks to large, easily readable typefaces and icons and sensible menus. Few systems are more straightforward to use or pleasing to the eye.

Families will appreciate the selection of clever storage spaces squirreled throughout the Journey's cabin, particularly the cubby holes in the floor. You'll find a fair amount of legroom behind the front seats, and the optional integrated child booster seats are a nice bonus. Furthering the family-oriented mission is the Journey's widely available third-row seat, which is bundled with a separate rear air-conditioner. This seat is far from adult-friendly, but it's handy if you need to shuttle a couple extra kids to soccer practice.

Lower all the seats and the Journey provides 67.6 cubic feet of total cargo capacity, which is an average capacity among small crossovers.

Dodge Journey AWD

service awd dodge journey 2017

  • Add to quote

I bought a new AWD Journey for my wife to replace her Durango. The Journey has been great in the snow this winter until this past Thursday when on her way home from work the service AWD message pops up, and she only has front wheel drive. The next morning I drive it the message is gone, and everything is back to normal. So yesterday I took it to a Dodge dealer, and get told that I need winter tires. I never seen tires wear out that quick where they work fine in the morning, and are shot by afternoon. I'm not buying it.

The thing that gets me upset with this is, on my way home from the dealership no messages or warning lights on dash. I go to pull into my driveway, and get stuck because AWD isn't working. The dealer won't look at it unless I buy four new winter tires.

wait...you brought it to a dealer, told them that the "service AWD" message came up on the display, and their answer was that you need winter tires?

That's what they told me. Said the code said tires are wore, and spin so it overheats the AWD module and triggers the servic AWD. This car went better in the snow than I expected it would before Thursday when the message came on the dash.

I put my complaint on the Bullet because I see a lot of the same stories on the Journy forum, and most of the people there listen to whatever the dealership tells them.

service awd dodge journey 2017

What year is the Dodge. How much tread do the tires have?

service awd dodge journey 2017

What tires are on it now and what's the tread depth?

service awd dodge journey 2017

If it needs tires, put the on. You're going to have to get the anyway. Then have the alignment checked. I assume it's still under factory warranty. I think warranty will pay one alignment.

MOPAR

service awd dodge journey 2017

I have a 2014 RT AWD. Haven't had that issue myself but i do know that the AWD system on the unit is very sensitive to tire circumference. If one or more tires are worn quite a bit more than the others you will get a code C1078 (Tire Revolution Out Of Range Performance). Its the same as putting different sized tires on a 4wd, it will result in transfer case damages. If the tires aren't that old, perhaps call Kuhmo for some "goodwill" warranty. The Kuhmo Solus that come factory aren't a very good wearing tire. I have 9300 miles on my unit now and i had to rotate them as the fronts were wearing quite fast, probably due to my heavy foot. My brother is a sales manager of a Dodge dealership here in Canada and he confirmed this with their service dept. If all 4 tires are worn to exactly the same measurements chances are you wont get the code. Dont know if this helps or not. :smt102

It's a 2014 Journey, bought new in May. It just turned 11,000 miles. !9" Kuhmos. The temp. here has not been above zero all week. I'm thinking it's more related to that than tires. Today it's fine AWD working no spinning. What scared me yesterday was no message on dash, and no AWD. At least when the warning light comes on I know I don't have AWD.

Should have bought a subaru. Don't buy a dodge product, ever

Was the Dodge a form of punishment? What did you do?

service awd dodge journey 2017

Something very very bad

All four tires are 5/32"

That's fucked up. Even if you purchased new snow tires, what if you lose traction w those? Same thing. Service AWD light comes on and back to FWD till you cycle the key again.

Tire pressures even?

34 psi in all four. I bought this vehicle because I thought it would be a safe ride for my wife during our harsh winters. Now I feel safer in my 93 Cherokee.

Damn. Id be pissed. At Mopar....and at myself for buying one.

Ha. I am, but she really liked our 04 Durango, But at 15000 miles on it, it was time to get somthing newer.

kumho tires suck. have a '12 journey, fwd, i think i got only 20k out of them, with rotating, with alot of highway miles

service awd dodge journey 2017

i'm not sure exactly how your dealer explained it to you, but according to what you said here i'll try and explain it. your journey had the "serv awd sys" light on, at that point you took it to the dealer. from what you said here i imagine the tech found a code c145f-awd sys temp disabled-overtemp. now the diag for that code asks if there is any abs codes, we will say no, next step asks if the code is active, we will say yes, it then says to confirm driving conditions when set(mud, snow, sand), of course it is snow from what you said, it says to clear code and drive veh on dry paved road-did the code return-no, test complete. so at this point the problem is from spinning in the snowy conditions. i'll tell you that those kumho tires do suck and at 5/32 they are not safe for winter in my opinion. also there's not too many tires to choose from in that size. not sure your dealer handled it or explained it properly, but them tellin you that you needed winter tires wasn't the way i would of handled it. the problem is low traction for the way the system is designed in my opinion, which means what i think is happening is the veh wants to be in front wheel drive most of the time, but when it sees low traction it switches to awd. the problem when driving in snowy conditions the front wheels and rear wheel are not spinning the same rpm as like a truck when in 4wd and causes this issue or the fact that it's switching back and forth from fwd to awd too often, just my opinion what's goin on. i've seen the same code in a new jeep cherokee, and it was snowing when this jeep came in.

I understand what you're saying, but why did I not have AWD yesterday and the service AWD light never came on. The dealership is a 50 mile drive back home. No service message came on, but my Journey got stuck in my driveway with only the front wheels spinning. Like I said earlier it was -10F.

Ive heard same issues too

service awd dodge journey 2017

I'd be throwing a fit with Dodge and Kumho. 11,000 miles and the tires are worn out? That's ridiculous! I just changed two of the original Michelins on my wife's 2010 Ford Edge at 70,000 miles. The other two are original and still have plenty of tread on them. The only reason I had to buy two of them is because I never rotated them and the fronts wore more than the rears.

Just make the fucking thing all wheel drive already. not this pansy bullshit. put a fucking real lever through the floor where you put your man hand on it and have to actually put some effort into getting it into 4wd. problem solved. I hate all this overly sensitive overly technical shit that needs four modules communicating and happy with each other just to make the frigging wheels go 'round. we've been getting pussified since the late 70's when they tried full timing it so you didn't have to get your feet wet and turn the hubs manually. fuck a push button either. rant over. p.s. it's winter in michigan. put some real tires on the damn thing. 5/32's ain't getting you anywhere when it actually snows. awd or not. braking ain't worth a shit either.

the problem is all the "sportier" veh now have a low profile high performance type tire on them, like the kumhos on this journey. none of those tires are good for traction or wear. if you rotate them every single oil change, you still will have to replace them at 20,000-25,000 miles. on top of that these veh have 19" wheels on them, how many veh do you see with 19's, almost none, for quite a few years these kumhos were the only tire available in the size the veh was built with. which is bs in my opinion.

wow, you did say you called the dodge cust service and they said they will stick with what the dealer says if i remember right. at that point i really don't know what to tell ya that will help, but i would call the dealer and bitch. i've been at one of the bigger dealers here for 17 years and if a dealer calls and bitch's my manager will almost always at least bring the veh in for a second look. we have 11 dodge, chrysler, jeep techs and 4 nissan techs and we're super busy pretty much all the time anymore. according to the tool guys that come into work alot of the other dealers are pretty slow. i have a dodge dealer 10 min from me that i wouldn't take my bicycle to for service, i drive 27 miles one way to work, but it's where the best business seems to be.

Thanks for all your advice! I also called the dealer that I got the Journey from, and they can't get it in till Tuesday. And now that it seems to be working ok they won't find anything wrong with it. I just hope when it happens again that my wife and her carpool coworkers don't get in an accident because the service AWD light doesn't come on.

no problem, hope i helped. hopefully it set a code somewhere and with your info like you told me it will help a tech find a problem. i would still look into getting tires, and i'm not saying winter tires, and i'm not saying your tires are causing your issues, but just for the simple fact that i know how those type of tires are and i personally don't feel they are real safe.

I just read on the net that Dodge is switching to Toyo tires for the Journey with 19" wheels. Says they are good in snow.
