Top Uganda Fishing Safari Destinations

Uganda Fishing Safaris takes you to explore some of the top most Uganda fishing hotspots.  In Uganda, spot fishing is practiced in the majority of lakes and rivers. Lake Mburo National Park is about a four-hour drive (228 km) from Kampala. More than five species of fish are thought to exist there, with tilapia being the most prevalent. Mazinga is the site for spot fishing in Lake Mburo. It is advised that fishermen bring their own gear. Uganda Fishing Safaris will make an effort to get the Uganda Wildlife Authority to grant you a permit.

Spot fishing is practiced over the tallest of the three waterfalls at Sipi in the Kapchorwa area in Eastern Uganda. Carrying their equipment is advised, and fishermen are reminded that the largest fish might weigh up to 2.5 or 3 kg.

The largest National Park in Uganda is located at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley. The Victoria Nile, which creates the breathtaking Murchison Falls by plunging 45 metres over the remaining wall of the rift valley, splits the park in half. This section of river offers thrilling spot fishing opportunities in addition to one of Uganda’s most amazing animal displays. The Nile Perch, which can weigh up to 108 kg, inhabit these waterways, making it likely that you may catch a huge fish.

Spot fishing is popular in Entebbe along the banks of Lake Victoria and the River Nile. There are many Nile Perch in the world’s largest freshwater lake, the Lake. It is a “catch and release” policy. At Ngamba Island, spot fishing excursions are scheduled on dedicated speed boats throughout the year, with a focus on the daytime hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the frequently asked Questions About Uganda Fishing Tours

How to get to fishing Destinations?

Murchison Falls National Park may be reached from Entebbe around six hours by car northwest (depending on traffic), with most of the roads leading to the park being paved. There are marram roads inside the park. Our all-inclusive tours come with comfortable, roomy 4 x 4 vehicles driven by a private driver, complete with space for fishing gear! If you are pressed for time, you can also utilise internal aircraft to get from Entebbe to the Murchison Falls National Park. View the Murchison Falls map.

When is the best time to go on safari and go fishing in Uganda?

The best months to fish at Murchison vary from year to year, but it’s generally agreed that the drier months of the year—December through March and June through October—bring in better fishing results. We catch all year round, but the likelihood of rain is lower during certain months. All year long, thunderstorms might appear out of the blue.It is best to avoid the start of the April/May rainy season.

In what way is fishing in Murchison Falls conducted?

Sport Fishing at Murchison Falls National Park is generally practiced in the area near the base of the falls. Fishing is done from a boat below the water falls in the pools or from the rocks along the riverbank.

How many people can fit on a boat for a fishing trip or safari in Uganda, both minimum and maximum?

It is perfect to have two anglers on a fishing boat, but it is possible to have as few as one or as many as four anglers on one, however they must be skilled.

What should I bring with me to the fishing trip?

The National Park lacks stores, so you’ll need to pack everything you’ll need, including sunscreen, prescription drugs, smokes, extra batteries for cameras and electronics, and insect repellent. It can get very hot, therefore we advise you to pack as much sun protection as you can, such as hats, sunglasses, and creams. The greatest footwear for shore fishing from the steep, rugged rocks is hiking or safari boots. Fishing garments that are lightweight and light in colour work best since they keep you cooler and deter tsetse flies from attaching themselves to you. Long sleeves and long trousers are excellent, however avoid blue/black dark colours where ever possible as these colours really attract the tsetse. It’s advisable to pack a lightweight rain jacket and an evening jumper.

Are there any dangers when fishing the Nile?

Because the Nile is home to hippopotamuses and dangerous Nile crocodiles, anglers are reminded not to put their hands or feet outside the boat.

  • Sport fishing is carried out throughout the year in Uganda. If you are planning to do sport fishing at Murchison falls national park, then the best time to visit is during the dry season. This is also the perfect time to combine fishing with a visit to see some of Uganda’s wildlife.
  • The main sport fishing methods in Uganda is by using a live bait or casting lures. Casting lures are particularly suitable for catching the Nile Perch. The smaller Tiger fish is is often used as bait like. To catch the Nile Perch and other larger species like Tilapia or lung fish, we suggest you use a road that is about three meters with either a multiplier reel or fixed spool. For the smaller species, a rod with a line of about 4 kilograms is enough.

Try to go fishing with enough drinking water so that you don’t get dehydrated. You also need to have insect repellent to keep away mosquitoes and the dreaded tsetse flies.
  • Other items to consider bringing for your fishing trip include sandals, hiking shoes (for sharp rocks) a camera to take photos of your expedition, a binocular to spot the water birds. Don’t forget to bring spare batteries for any of your electrical gadgets. The clothing’s should include a short, T-shirts and also a rain jacket if you are traveling during the rainy season. A sweater will keep you warm during the cold evenings. As you head out of your hotel or lodge, you might need your medication, and toiletries packed in a light backpack. Do not forget to pack lunch which can be in form of sandwiches, salads, hot dogs. You can also move with drinking water, sodas, tea/coffee or beer.
  • It is recommended that Anglers bring their own favorite fishing gear even though they can be provided when required.
  • Sport fishing in Rwanda is not as developed as in Uganda.

Sport Fishing in Uganda

Uganda is positioned on a raised basin that is in between the eastern and western arms of the East African rift valley and about 25% of its surface is covered by water.

Uganda contains the largest lake in Africa and the second largest fresh water lake in the world – Lake Victoria which is also the source of the world’s longest Nile River.

Uganda also features lakes like George, Kyoga, Edward, Albert, Mburo among others presenting an ideal habitat for counts of fish.

A range of 354 species of fish species are noted to exist in the water bodies of Uganda and the major and commercial common ones include the Nile Perch, Tilapia and Cat fish which are also main targets for tourists. Other species of fish include the Protopterus, Rastrinabola, lung fish among other fish.

Sport Fishing is Apparently Carried out in The Following places;

Murchison falls national park.

Positioned at 311km about 5 hours’ drive from Kampala, Murchison Falls National Park is crossed by the Nile River that carries with it the famous Nile Perch.

Murchison Falls NP is so far the best spot for sport fishing.  Sport fishing can be done all the year round though the most successful fishing months include the January to March and July to October.

Fishing area and conditions

It can be noted that apparently the sport fishing is conducted at the base of the falls where is it is better carried out on the rocks featured at the river bank or slightly lower downstream in the pools right from your boat.

The fishing spots are accessed by boat from a further downstream point or by walking down the river gorge from the top of the falls. This is a relatively long and yet steep climb fair for a fit person.

The Temperatures at Murchison Falls National Park are noted to be high and at times reach 38 degrees especially at Midday requiring the anglers to carry along with them sun protection like hats and sun tan lotion. The long sleeved shirt and an insect repellant would save you from the bites of the Tsetse flies.

Methods of Fishing / Equipment

The fish that is caught on casting lures or the live bait include the Nile Perch and a range of cat fish Species. Other smaller fish can also be caught by spinning including the tiger fish. The rod of 11 feet (3m) – 8 feet (2.4m) along with a fixed spool or multiplier reel are recommended.

For the smaller species, the 7 spinning rod along with 3/5kg line is considered adequate. Regarding the reels, it can be noted that any reel fixed spool or the multiplier featuring 30 – 35lb line can work for Nile perch and Cat fish.

Lake Victoria

Fishing on Lake Victoria can be conducted all year round though the local traditions put the October to March as the best fishing months.

The Nile Perch exist ranging from 10kg – 80kg in their weight.  The trolling with lures is the major method used in fishing. Tilapia can also be caught using the fly fishing techniques and the tilapia stretch to 1 – 2kgin weight.

The 18 feet sea going ski boat featuring a single foam filled hull powered by the Yamaha 140HP outboard engine boat that features a maximum capacity of four (4) people or going with a canoe or a fiber glass of 24 feet in length all allow you to explore fishing encounter on Lake Victoria.

Equipment and Facilities

The boats feature a sun canopy overhead, rain suits, GPS, electronic fish finder, life jackets, mobile phones, first aid box, flares and fire extinguisher.

There is also a cooler to keep the drinks cold. There is adequate supply of lures for trolling for the perch up to 4 lines for each boat.

However, anglers are free to bring along with them their equipment especially the lighter equipment for Tilapia.  If there is anything that is lost or broken is paid for before one disembarks from the encounter.

The Day fishing trips commence at 9am or 1pm and come back at 12:30pm or 5pm respectively with the half day encounter of 4 hours and full day being 8 hours.

The fishing is conducted around the local Islands taking about 45minutes on a boat trip from Entebbe.  The areas selected for fishing are determined by weather and the how the fish are biting. At given periods of the year, the lake can be that rough that the sheltered bays only are used for fishing

There are also night fishing trips though they involve spending an overnight at Ngamba Island in its Tented Camp.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo positioned within the boundaries of Lake Mburo National Park features six (6) fish species where Tilapia is the most common.

The designated point for sport fishing is at Mazinga and the travellers interested in carrying out this activity in Lake Mburo National Park have to carry along their fishing equipment and then acquire a permit from Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Sport fishing in this region is carried out on the highest of the three water falls at Sipi which is outside Mount Elgon National Park.

The encounter offers the anglers a challenge of battling with the rainbow trout along with impressive coloration and fighting ability.

The gigantic can stretch to 3kg in weight.  The fishing is limited to designated areas and there is no need for advance booking.

Sport Fishing in Uganda | Uganda Fishing Trips and Tours

Uganda Fishing Trips and tours; Sport Fishing in Uganda; – fishing safari in Uganda – Guaranteed fishing permits – Nile Perch Fishing on Lake Victoria and Murchison Falls National Park . Nile Perch fish trips in Uganda – The incredible Nile perch African safari isn’t a famous safari by many travelers despite its fantastic experience. The Nile perch safari is also known as snook or the Victoria perch safari. Nile perch weighing in between 20—180 pounds is the largest freshwater game fish in Africa and are the main catch in both Lake Victoria and the Murchison Nile.

Where can I find Nile perch?

– The freshwater fish species is widespread throughout much of African freshwaters as there are a lot of small rivers that come out of the lakes and pour into other lakes, being native to Congo Basin, Nile, Senegal, Niger and Lake Chad, Volta, Lake Turkana, and other river basins. The Nile perch is also commonly seen in the waters of Lake Maryrut in Egypt and Lake Nasser.

Fishing in Lake Victoria

The Sport Fishing in Uganda are open to all anglers, both the novices and also the more serious fisherman and can range from half to full day or longer overnight trips for those keener anglers. Trolling with lures is the method generally used whilst fishing on the lake. All the necessary equipment for Nile perch trolling on the lake is provided, but if anglers wish to bring and use their own tackle, that is fine.

Best Time for Fishing in Murchison Falls National Park

December–February and June–September are the ideal months to plan a fishing trip to Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park if you’re interested in sport fishing. The water levels are typically low and the fish are floating on the surface during that period.

Because fish avoid milk water as a bait source, and because river flooding during the rainy season can make sport fishing in Murchison National Park problematic, we do not advise going on safaris during this time. Even more so, when it rains, the river rises and sometimes separates the fishing spots upstream from the waterfalls. March through May and October mark the beginning of the rainy season.

Fishing at Murchison Falls National Park

What is the biggest Nile perch ever caught?

Are you wondering what the biggest Nile perch ever caught? On December 20, 2000, California angler William Toth landed the heaviest Nile perch ever recorded on rod and reel a 104.32 kg (230 pounds) fish that crushed the Rapala Fire Tiger lure he was trolling in Egypt’s famous Lake Nasser

Sport Fishing In Uganda

10 Days Fishing Safari Package To Murchison Falls National Park Uganda, Sport fishing adventure and safaris in Uganda is one of the life time experience activity that visitors can enjoy while on their Africa Safari. Lake Victoria

Sport fishing adventure and safaris in Uganda is one of the life time experience activity that visitors can enjoy while on their Africa Safari. Uganda is one of the best sport fishing destinations in Africa and she can never betray her visitors this is because of having numerous fishing spots such as Rivers, Lakes and Swamps and many species of fish such as Nile perch, Tilapia, Cat fish etc that are sustained by the country’s good climate which gives good breeding environment.

Where to do Sport Fishing in Uganda

Besides wildlife safaris, cultural tours, gorilla and chimpanzee safaris, mountaineering, Uganda is excellently one of the exceptional sport fishing destinations in Africa with its remarkable water bodies distributed indifferent parts of the country mostly on Western and Eastern arms of the Great Rift Valley, Uganda has a number of water resources that unquestionably supports both commercial and sport fishing which positions the country to be the best fishing destination. Approximately a 3 rd  of Uganda is occupied by fresh water bodies such as Lake Victoria, the country’s and Africa’s largest Lake and the second largest fresh water body in the world, Lake Kyoga as you head towards the Central part of Uganda, Lake George, Lake Albert, Lake Mburo, Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Edward. Incredible Rivers including the Mighty River Nile which features as the longest in Uganda and the second longest in the whole world, River Katonga, River Aswa, River Kafu and River Rwizi. Besides, there are numerous wetlands and swamps which equally offer refuge to distinct fish species that makes Uganda the best destination for sport fishing safaris in Africa.

About 350 fish species have been recorded in Uganda water bodies, but the most common and target for commercial exploitation and other purposes include Nile perch, Nile tilapia, the catfishes Bagrus and Clarias, Tiger fish, the small pelagic “sardine”, lungfish, and the haplo chromines. But for fishing adventure safari Nile Perch, Nile Tilapia, Catfish and Lungfish are the most popular due to their size for example a huge Nile perch can grow up to 200 kilograms large and up to 6 ft length and listed as one of the largest freshwater fishes in the world and easy to catch biggest both during day and at night.

Where to go for sport fishing in Uganda

There are several Sport fishing spots in Uganda namely;

Murchison falls national park

Murchison falls National Park is among the leading places where sport fishing is conducted. This park is located in Northwestern Uganda, approximately five hour drive from Kampala City. The park is also a home to the world’s strongest Falls “The Murchison Falls” and inhabiting a big number of wild life including four members of the “African big five”  Fishing here is mainly done along the Victoria Nile both from the shores of the River and when using a motor. Fishing from the shores and at the bottom of the falls is most exciting experience because it involves catching fish along rocky surfaces at the Devil’s Cauldron however, the anglers has to take cautions of Hippos and Nile crocodiles. At Murchison Falls National Park Nile perch is the main target specie and for better result we advised you have a local fishing guide.

Fishing experiences in Murchison falls involves the use of live baits and casting lures and visitors have a higher opportunity to catch amazing fish species like the Nile perch and cat fish as well as tiger fish. Therefore anglers need to come with three meter or 2.4 meter rod with a mounted spool or multiplier fishing reel, seven spinning rod with 3/5 kilogram line for catching small fish species and for cat fish and the Nile perch, you can use any fixed spool or multiplier with 30 to 35Ib line. You will need a sport fishing permit to allow you partake this most exhilarating adventure in Murchison falls national park which will also offer you opportunity to catch at least a 108 kilogram Nile perch. We advocate for conservation of the environment, wildlife and antiquities and for the continuity of adventurous tourism for the future destinations; therefore, any individual wishing to do sport fishing should think of using recommendable fishing methods and equipment by authorities and should be willing to catch and release to make the activity enjoyable.

How to reach to Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is found in the Northwest of Uganda approximately a 6 hours drive from Kampala (looking at the traffic in Kampala and a few tarred roads that lead to the park). Note that the roads in the park are Murrum, hence advised to drive in a 4 x 4 vehicle; spacious and comfortable for you and also with room to carry your fishing equipment.

You could also take a flight to the park with a charter from Entebbe airport or Kajjansi airstrip since the park has airfields like Pakuba airfield. This makes the journey shorter and time saving mainly for people with limited travel time makes the distance shorter.

When to Fish

Sport fishing Adventure is an all year round activity though there are some exceptional month and these are January, March and July to October. Best catches are seen early in the morning and late in the day. Though best results of fish are when the water level is low since water is clearer, i.e from Mid-January to Early-April. Also it is said that fish feed more when weather conditions vary dramatically especially at the start of the rainstorms.

Fishing Equipment/Method

As earlier mentioned that you need to carry your fishing equipment and keep in mind all fish caught are not killed it’s laid back in the water alive. Methods are by casting lures, spinning and catching fish on live bait and fish species caught include; Nile perch, Catfish, Tiger fish among others.

All anglers are advised to have rods that are between 8 feet and 11 feet with a multiplier reel. While catching smaller species; a 7’ spinning rod is recommended.

For safety reasons and successful fishing adventure we recommend that any who wishes to go for a fishing vacation in Uganda should do it with assistance of an experience local fishing guide or to go through a reputable tour operator for better arrangements.

Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is the second world’s largest fresh water body that covers about 69485 square kilometers. It got its name from Queen Victoria and amongst Africa’s Great Lakes that is fed by River Kagera which flows from Rwanda and with Rive Nile as the Major out let. This incredible natural wonder is distributed within 3 East African countries that is Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and has over 84 islands, it is the major supporter of fishing activities in the East African region.

E-bike tour guide pedals Yellowstone, Gardiner rides

BILLINGS – In the winter, Jay O’Connor used to feed 55 horses that in the summer provided horseback rides for fishing or hunting guests.

Now O’Connor owns 40 e-bikes that he parks in the garage for the winter and ignores.

As the owner of Big Sky Ebike Tours and Rentals in Gardiner since 2020, O’Connor said he’s “living the dream” guiding cycling tours in and around Yellowstone National Park. After all, where else can cyclists possibly see bison, elk, bighorn sheep, bears, foxes, coyotes, deer and a variety of hot pools, fumaroles and geysers in one trip, not to mention spectacular views of the surrounding mountains?

O’Connor’s guided rides inside Yellowstone include a 17-mile trip around the base of Bunsen Peak on a gravel service road closed to public vehicles. From Old Faithful, his Geyser Basin Tour pedals to Morning Glory Pool along the Firehole River and then on to Biscuit Basin. Shuttling the bikes he can then skip on to Firehole Lake Drive and ride Fountain Freight Road to Grand Prismatic Spring.

“I don’t do anything on the roads at all,” he said, instead focusing on getting his guests away from crowds.

Last weekend, with the 50 miles of highway from Mammoth Hot Springs to West Yellowstone open to bicycle traffic only, O’Connor was leading tours from Mammoth to Norris Geyser Basin, a 38-mile round trip.

Outside the park, one of his most popular tours travels down the Old Yellowstone Trail to the red-colored rock uplift of Devils Slide and on to Yankee Jim Canyon where the Yellowstone River is forced into a narrow gorge. The return ride stops at Yellowstone Hot Springs for a soothing soak.

“That’s a really popular ride for us because there is so much wildlife in the basin,” O’Connor said.

Costs range from $175 for the Bunsen Peak ride to $275 for the Geyser Basin tour. Four people is the minimum for a tour, otherwise an additional fee is tacked on. Bike rentals are $50 an hour to $100 for a full day.

Up and down

Much like the trails and roads he rides, O’Connor’s business has seen some ups and downs since it was launched.

Opening during the COVID pandemic was a “kick in the teeth,” but then participation in outdoor activities grew because indoor venues were closed. That inaugural year was followed by a solid summer of growth before the historic 2022 flood. The raging waters of the Gardner and Yellowstone rivers washed out the nearby North Entrance road to Yellowstone. Gardiner businesses were suddenly isolated at a dead end. Last year, tours rebounded after the route was reopened, and so far this year O’Connor is quickly filling his summer tours.

“My primary demographic is families and people over the age of 40,” he said.

Feeling young again

E-bikes are also a personal choice for O’Connor. He had a hip replacement last year and was still able to pedal 20 miles a day with the motorized assistance the cycles provide. His first ride on an e-bike made him feel like he was 20 again, propelling him to start the tour and rental service.

“This business wouldn’t work with a traditional bike,” he said.

That’s because when touring, he uses a microphone that connects to earbuds each rider wears. This way he can tell his tour group what power level of assistance he’s at and what gear the cycle is in, so everyone stays at relatively the same pace.

On traditional bicycles, the group would likely be more spread out depending on the rider’s ability, or lack thereof.

Most of O’Connor’s tours are under 25 miles, so the bikes’ batteries last for the entire ride. On longer trips, like in the spring when he goes from Mammoth to Norris and back, he carries an extra battery.

On one of those spring rides into the park, O’Connor came around a corner to find a newly awakened black bear only 10 feet off the road.

“He was groggy,” he said. “He must have just crawled out of hibernation.”

Rather than fleeing from the pack of riders, the bear ambled over to a boulder and curled up for a nap. That’s not something most bike riders will encounter, providing a charge unlike the one e-bikers may typically need.

As we embark on a second "Great Electrification," in an effort to decarbonize our economy, it’s worth remembering the first one that occurred 80 years ago.
