Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Director's Edition Remastered Trailer

Originally released in 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture became the fourth highest grossing movie of the year and earned three Academy Award® nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Music, Original Score. The film successfully launched the Star Trek franchise beyond the original television series, despite having been rushed to theaters with incomplete special effects and forced editing choices.

In 2001, director Robert Wise revisited the film to refine the edit and enhance the visual effects. His updated vision was released on DVD in standard definition and embraced by fans but has never been available in higher definition until now.  Meticulously assembled and restored by producer David C. Fein with post-production supervisor Mike Matessino, both of whom originally collaborated with Wise, the film has been prepared for presentation in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and a new powerful and immersive Dolby Atmos® soundtrack. Fein and Matessino assembled a team of visual effects experts, led by returning visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, and utilized the extensive resources in the Paramount Archives to recreate the effects not just in HD, but in Ultra HD. After more than six months of painstaking work, the updated movie looks and sounds better than ever while staying true to Wise’s original intention.

The Enterprise prepares to leave space dock in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

“ The Director’s Edition on 4k Ultra HD delivers an experience that is far more intimate, engaging, and powerful thanks to the hard work of everyone involved,” said Fein.  “In building The Complete Adventure, we appreciated that many people who were first introduced to the film through the full frame release of the ‘Special Longer Version’ have missed it.  I’m excited that it will now be available for the first time in widescreen 4k Ultra HD. After so many years, it’s deeply rewarding to finally deliver Robert Wise’s definitive Director’s Edition for fans to enjoy at home.”

Following is an overview of the new product offerings:

Star Trek 4K 6-Movie Collection Boxset Review

James Amey

Coming to our screens straight from the 70s, 80s, and 90s is this year’s Star Trek 4k 6-Movie Collection . From The Motion Picture to The Undiscovered Country . The movies have all been re-mastered for the second time this century, this time in 4K. This release follows on from last year’s I – IV set. This, at the time, oddly omitted the final two silver screen outings for the original cast on 4k and blu-ray. But what would we Trek fans be if not eagerly ready to double dip? Especially on what will likely be the ultimate releases of these films.

Fortunately, for those that purchased last year’s 4-movie set. Or those that really, really hate The Final Frontier . The films have all now been released separately. Before picking up the 6-movie set, it’s worth noting Star Trek: First Contac t was spotted in 4K on Paramount+ US earlier this year. So there’s a good chance The Next Generation movies will follow soon. So, if you want to be a little more frugal, it’s worth waiting for a complete movie set.

Although much like they did with the original blu-ray masters back in 2009, they may (and are likely to) release a TOS and TNG package separately alongside the complete set.

star trek 4k box set

The Packaging

The Star Trek 4k 6-Movie Collection box set includes the new masters in HDR and on standard Bluray. But trust this reviewer when he says that it’s worth buying one for The Motion Picture Director’s Cut alone. The disks themselves come in two ‘jumbo’ blu-ray cases. One for the 4K disks (in black) and one in the traditional blue for the standard Blu-Rays (including The T MP bonus disk).  The cover art continues the theme of last year’s release. A somewhat scattergun approach portraying The Original Series cast with images used from at least three different films. Also included are their villains and, oddly enough, the Phase II Enterprise again. The Star Trek 4k 6-Movie Collection’s inner cases have the same key art but are strangely utilized to create tall, cut-off portraits of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, and Uhura. Even weirder, the art is still the same on the 4K and standard Blu-ray cases. You would have thought they would swap Uhura and Scotty out for Chekov and Sulu on one, at least.

The sets’ disks themselves are uninspired. They have the standard reflective silver no-art, an approach that has become a staple of Paramount Trek releases. Another weird addition is a disk-shaped cut-out of the boxset art that’s included in the 4K box for some reason. I can’t see the purpose of it, it certainly won’t be featured on my wall any time soon.

The Films – Technical advisories and historical context

My review of the Star Trek 4k 6-Movie Collection is based on viewing via a 4K HDR display. It has been noted in other reviews that the downsampling of the 4K scans to 1080p for the Blu-ray has led to some scenes feeling overly bright. This is partly due to the lack of HDR on that format, and a soft colour shift under some lighting, the screencaps provided here are from the Blu-rays.

In another oddity of this set, the Director’s Cut of The Undiscovered Country is only available in 4K. The Dolby Atmos logo is plastered all over the sets, but The Motion Picture Director’s edition is the only film with an Atmos track. While some may fondly put their 2009 master copies of the films on the TV and enjoy the experience, as a film student at the time I always found them oddly off-putting and ‘unnatural’ looking. It wasn’t until I discovered the process that had been used in their creation – Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) – that I understood why.

star trek 4k box set

When the prints were scanned for blu-ray, at the time it was popular to erase the 35mm film grain much loved by more ‘traditional’ directors. To do this an automated tool went through and essentially blurred the image until it was no longer apparent, then went back through and sharpened the image to give the appearance of the resolution being restored.

The film that suffered from this the most and so is most improved since the 2009 master in this release was The Undiscovered Country . Spock especially in various shots looked like he’d been taken right off a plinth at Madame Tussauds. I’m pleased to say this release has corrected the overzealous use of DNR. However, fair warning to those used to their 2009 blu-rays – the image does now appear softer – but this is as the directors intended.

The Motion Picture – Directors Edition

Following the Paramount+ release in the US, the director’s edition of The Motion Picture has finally hit UK shores. While it certainly is an odd choice only to give this version of the film an Atmos track, it has never sounded or looked better. A lot of work has gone into this grounds-up remaster and it shows, building on the template Robert Wise set out in 2001 this film finally feels close to what TMP should have been from day 1. For example, the wonky effects shots are gone in favor of re-composited original footage that was found during the remaster and the odd bit of CGI to fill in the gaps – but you wouldn’t be able to tell while watching.

My memory, like I assume many others, is of TMP as a fairly colorless film (in no small part due to costuming choices). This release has turned that on its head. The film truly ‘pops’ for lack of a better term in a way I never thought possible. It’s clear it’s been a labor of love for those involved and the light bouncing off the hull of the Enterprise truly makes you appreciate the artistry of those that built that iconic model.

star trek 4k box set

The Wrath of Khan

The most popular of the original cast’s filmography finally makes it to 4K in a physical format! After causing many raised eyebrows following the 2015 re-release of the Director’s Cut and Theatrical editions only on standard blu-ray. Only for it to be spotted in the following years on the likes of iTunes in 4K. This release is however the least interesting in this box set given that it is just a re-release (on blu-ray at least), however like with the other films the HDR really elevates the color to another level. Unsurprisingly, the later scenes of the movie are the ones that benefit the most, the iconic 1701 reaches a new level of beauty pitted against the backdrop of the Mutara nebula as James Horner’s score fills your speakers.

star trek 4k box set

The Search for Spock

The 2009 release of The Search for Spock , often referred to as the un (or less) loved middle child of the Genesis trilogy, was plagued with several issues. Colour timing – for example, the Enterprise bridge had a blue hue, not red, after its final battle. Then the opening credits are pillar boxed – a change that wasn’t present in any previous (or now later) release. I’m happy to report these issues alongside the DNR mentioned above have been fixed. Returning the film to what is likely to be the closest to the opening night theatre experience that we will get. While some effects shots don’t hold up too well, thinking specifically about Kruge’s fall. The majority of the film makes the journey to 4K in good standing. The destruction of the Enterprise and the death of David remain an emotional one-two gut punch. Additionally, the vibrant sunset as the Enterprise streaks across the sky takes on new life with HDR.

star trek 4k box set

The Voyage Home

The joyous time travel romp that closes out the Genesis Trilogy was one of the better, though still troubled parts of the 2009 release. It was helped in a lot of ways by the nature of the film and how it took place on contemporary Earth. I imagine this made the color timing easier for those doing the master back in 2009, but there were still plenty of issues. Most notably the odd cyan tint that seemed to affect almost everything. The film is set in the present day and uses more live locations compared to the previous TMP era films did however cause some of the effects shots to look particularly bad after they had been through DNR and sharpening. The fishing boat at the end was a prime example with it looking like a toy that had been hastily put in with Microsoft paint when superimposed with the Bird of Prey. This new master fixes those issues and returns the film to its delightfully 80s natural state. It also reflects the sunny conditions under which a number of scenes were shot instead of it looking somewhat gloomy, much in contrast to the general tone of the film.

star trek 4k box set

The Final Frontier

Despite having a bit of a tongue-in-cheek resurgence with its many references in Star Trek: Lower Decks The Final Frontier doesn’t hold a high position in many fans’ rankings. The film suffered from budget issues that are apparent throughout, especially in the effects department with it being the first Trek film not to rely on the talents of Industrial Light & Magic due to budget constraints. The previous master of the film seemed to take the approach that as much of this as possible should be covered up by cranking the saturation up in a number of scenes, most notably the ‘God’ encounter in the final act. The final result is that you could probably light up half of New York if you paused it at the wrong moment. This is thankfully fixed in this version, while also giving us a split-second look at the cut-for-budget rock monster that was originally intended to make an appearance and later found life in Trek fan favourite film Galaxy Quest .

star trek 4k box set

The Undiscovered Country

We now come to the final Trek film to grace our screens in 4K (at least until – fingers crossed – next year) and it’s The Original Series casts swan song. This film when released in 2009 was a tough watch. On top of the DNR, there were also the color timing changes which amongst other things made Spock look slightly green and ill in many sequences. Well, that is gone in favor of much more natural skin tones in this master. The 4K disk as mentioned also includes the Director’s Cut. Featuring the late and great René Auberjonois in the Colonel West Scooby Doo-esque subplot. Much of the effects work is improved as well with improved contrast in HDR, be fairly warned though that this does not include the very 90s CG pink blood. Which sticks out like a sore thumb to this day (while also making no sense with every other Klingon appearance).

star trek 4k box set

If you’re looking to re-live the theatre experience of the original casts’ movies, you’re not going to get any closer than having the Star Trek 4K 6-Movie Collection editions with a good quality screen, some may argue it’s even an improved experience. Having only watched the Director’s Edition and Wrath of Khan re-release in cinemas this past summer in the UK I won’t make that claim on behalf of all of the films though.

It’s undeniable that these are improved (even on the standard Blu-ray versions) over the 2009 masters though. The films all have a much more natural look to them and are rid of (invented) excess detail. The Star Trek Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection is available now from all retailers.

Star Trek fans will soon have new items to add to their home media shelves, as the first six Star Trek movies are getting released in 4K/HDR Ultra-HD — both as part of the 15-disc Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection and as single-film releases. The Director’s Edition of The Motion Picture released earlier this year on Paramount+ is also getting a special home media release.

Fans can already watch the first four Star Trek movies in 4K/HDR thanks to the excellent Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection released last year. But now Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (which has taken on renewed attention recently thanks to a certain Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode ), and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , the last TOS- era Star Trek movie, will be watchable in 4K/HDR for the first time ever as part of Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection , and as standalone releases.

The Star Trek: The Motion Picture included in The Original Motion Picture Collection is the painstakingly restored Director’s Edition, which recently became available for streaming on Paramount+. The Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan release includes that movie’s director’s cut, which was released in 2016, and theatrical cut. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is only presented in its theatrical cut, as is Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier . The Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country release includes the theatrical cut of the film, as well as the Director’s Cut that was released in 2004 .

The Director’s Edition of The Motion Picture is getting a limited-edition collector’s set release, which you can pre-order here . This edition includes that movie’s theatrical cut and the “first-ever widescreen presentation of the Special Longer Version of  Star Trek: The Motion Picture , originally created for broadcast television in 1983,” according to the press release, as well as deluxe packaging with exclusive collectibles, including reproductions of original promotional material, a booklet with behind-the-scenes images, stickers, and more.

Anyone know if iTunes will auto-upgrade digital copies of each to 4K if they were previously purchased? Only asking because I think that that’s typically what they do, correct?

Soooo… what if I’m interested in all six UHD releases, but want the extra TMP Theatrical/Longer Cut disc? I have to forego the set and buy them all individually?

You could but the individuals for II thru VI, and the Complete Adventure set. Then you’d have it all content-wise in 4K.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection beams down brand new 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays featuring Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard and his crew. Each film scores a winning 4K transfer and excellent audio upgrades with hours of bonus features for each film. This box set is the most convenient way for die-hard fans to upgrade, but unless you need every film at home, the single-title options are best. Recommended

The journey begins with original cast members Kirk, Scott, and Chekov in a story that spans space and time in STAR TREK: GENERATIONS, continuing with a terrifying face off against the Borg in STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, a dangerous plot against a peaceful planet in STAR TREK: INSURRECTION, and a familiar old foe returning in STAR TREK: NEMESIS.

Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take

Star Trek: Generations:

As my colleague Joshua Zyber already wrote excellent coverage for this film (and the franchise as a whole), I’ll largely leave his words to speak for this review as well (even if I may be a little more forgiving). For my own sake, I’ve always liked Star Trek: Generations . It’s far from perfect, but it’s not terrible or anywhere near the worst Trek film we’ve ever seen. It was saddled (literally and figuratively) with being a bridge film from the OG crew’s cinematic run to the Next Generation team. Its biggest issue (in my opinion) is that the thoughtful meditative plot feels undercooked while trying to fit in big cinematic action setpieces. In the rush to get this to theaters ASAP, the story relies on a number of logical leaps to get by and it doesn't always stick the landing. In its goal to have Picard and Kirk share some screen time, their adventure is decidedly small-scale for what should have been a truly grand iconic passing of the torch. At least Malcolm McDowell delivers some scene-chewing villainy and Data finally got that pesky emotion chip installed!  3/5

Star Trek: First Contact:

It may be heavier on action than the average Next Generation episode, but it also finds time to be thoughtful and ponderous. In true grand Trek form, it explores interesting issues and needles around with them a little but doesn’t get so bogged down that it becomes a numbing slog. There’s heart, humor, and plenty of thrilling action-packed set pieces to keep the blood pumping and your attention firmly fixed on the screen. I wouldn’t call this the greatest Star Trek cinematic adventure, but it’s up at the top of the heap with the best efforts of the Original Crew and Kelvin Crew films.  4/5

Star Trek: Insurrection:

Much like the maligned Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , this is a film that thinks it has big ideas and themes to explore, but only enough plot and interesting action to sustain your average series episode. Insurrection has some thoughts about mortality and humanity’s use and abuse of natural resources without consequence, but its plot doesn’t justly service these notions. Like the people in  The Village , the Ba’ku are too simple and primitive to be interesting while the Son’a are too cartoonish to be menacing or threatening. After the thrilling pulse-pounding First Contact , this film feels like it chugged down a Valium with a whiskey chaser and settled in for the night.  2/5

Star Trek: Nemesis:

All good things must come to an end, and we can only hope they end gracefully and fitfully. No one likes to see their heroes depart, but we can hope they’re able to go out strong. I don’t think Star Trek: Nemesis was intended to be the final cinematic voyage of Picard and his crew, but it sadly ended up that way after a dismal box office performance. As what has been a common theme for this round of films, Nemesis was a victim of competing ideals for a franchise with an identity crisis. One of my production professors at the time put it succinctly, “It’s a movie trying to hold onto the television series while also trying to be Star Wars .” 3/5

Vital Disc Stats: The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection gathers up the four films of Picard's crew in one big eight-disc 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital Box set. Each film has a BD-66 for the 4K version with a Region Free BD-50 disc for the remastered 1080p presentation. The discs are housed in an 8-Disc case with indentical slipcover artwork and each disc gets its own tray to rest on without being stacked. The Digigital Copy slip has individual codes for each film, but this being a Paramount release it is not Movies Anywhere compatable and will port only to a single streaming platform like Vudu or iTunes. Each disc loads to a static image main menu with standard navigation options.

Star Trek: Generations:

star trek 4k box set

After a waxy edge-enhanced mess of a 1080p Blu-ray, Paramount continues their winning work on Trek by affording Generations an excellent 2160p Dolby Vision (and HDR10) transfer. From the clearly improved detail levels to the naturally cinematic film grain, this is an immediately clear upgrade. Makeup effects, details in the Enterprise D model, and Malcolm McDowell’s scar are all great enhancements to look out for. I was especially impressed with the practical effects model work of the saucer separation crash landing sequence. This film was in the sweet spot era where practical effects and models still were dominant over CGI and that sense of visual weight and volume is made all the more real in this excellent transfer.

HDR grade is right on point without overpowering contrast, blacks, or supping up the colors to unnatural levels. Black levels are deep with impressive shadow gradience to give the image a nice sense of three-dimensional depth. Whites are crisp and clean without blooming - most evidenced by Kirk’s bold white shirt under his uniform vest. Colors are bold with natural primary saturation with healthy skin tones. That said, it’s quite obvious that certain cast members had some tanning work done. All around, start to finish, this is another excellent Trek transfer.

star trek 4k box set

As the best film of the Next Generation franchise it shouldn’t be any surprise that Star Trek: First Contact is the star 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The film had an okay first Blu-ray outing but left a lot to be desired. Thankfully this wait for a new transfer was worth it. Enjoying a robust 2160p Dolby Vision transfer, the film simply looks better than ever with an impressive range of clean details, bold colors, deep inky blacks, and a naturally cinematic film grain presence - all of which were missing on that last Blu-ray. From the first shots of the Borg cube to the Borg Queen and her mindless minions to the people at the Montana missile complex, fine details are terrific. Facial features, hair styling, and makeup all look incredible. I really enjoyed seeing the Oscar-nominated Borg makeup and the little imperfections in the skin and the various cybernetic implants in full 4K glory. Some of the early CGI work - especially around a particular substance in the final act - can look a little dated and dodgy, but a lot of it still holds up well, including Alice Krige’s iconic entrance.

With HDR (both Dolby Vision and HDR10), the film’s color scheme looks much healthier than the past disc. From the color designations for the crew’s uniforms to the lighting accents of the Enterprise-E’s helm, primaries are lovely enjoying a full range of shades while keeping skin tones healthy… for humans at least. Black levels are also greatly improved here with the Borg-held deck levels showing nice deep inky shades with some creepy shadows giving the image a terrific feel of three-dimensional depth. After some dodgy Paramount catalog releases over the years, it’s nice to see that with recent outings like Dragonslayer and the previous Trek discs they can deliver a great 4K disc. First Contact is easily the highlight of the Next Generation films.

star trek 4k box set

With the want for a lighter cheerier adventure, Star Trek: Insurrection manages to deliver an often beautiful 2160p HDR (Dolby Vision and HDR10) transfer. Much of this film is brightly lit with lovely exterior locations and it’s quite often stunning to look at. Details for the Ba’ku homes and village, the Son’a’s stretched faces, and your average human, android, or Klingon look terrific. Fine film grain is apparent throughout and looks appropriately cinematic without appearing smoothed over or modulated like some other Paramount catalog titles.

Dolby Vision aids this film’s visual appeal allowing for a better range of colors, better black levels, with bright bold whites. The outdoor scenes generally look the best with a great sense of depth to the image. Night sequences look better this outing than past discs with nice inky black levels and much-improved shadows - especially when Picard is leading the Ba'ku through the caves. Whites are nice and crisp without blooming issues. This film had a bit more CGI effects to it but there are still plenty of practical effects working to give the bigger action sequences some weight. A couple of the effects shots can look a bit dated, Data pealing off his Invisibility Cloak early in the film is an example, but for the most part, there aren’t any serious offenders. All around another worthwhile upgrade.

star trek 4k box set

After the bright and cheery-looking Insurrection , Nemesis went dark… literally. This is a very dark-looking film as a key character is adverse to bright lights, so it's often steeped in pitch black with dynamic ominous shadows - and it looks great in 4K with Dolby Vision HDR. I heard it joked this lighting scheme was done so Paramount didn’t have to pay to paint the sets. True or not, when the lights are on, the film looks terrific with impressive details in facial features, costumes, and the slick makeup and creature effects for the Remans. CGI work is also a little stronger here than past films. Some of the CGI ship models can look a little weightless, but a lof of the effects hold up beautifully. Fine film grain is present throughout and there isn’t any signs of troublesome modulation or smoothing.

Dolby Vision (and HDR10) work well for this outing, especially because of the film’s deep black levels and frequent shadowed imagery. The blacks are deep, ominous, and inky but offer some excellent shadow separation and depth. Even in the darkest scenes, it feels like there’s more to the background than past releases. Colors are bold with beautiful primaries with healthy natural skin shades. Whites are crisp and clear without issue. Once again this is another excellent Trek transfer for 4K leaving the film looking better than ever on disc.

Audio Review

star trek 4k box set

As has been the case with previous Trek outings on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Generations utilizes an impressive Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio mix offering a notable upgrade over the TrueHD 5.1 track from the old Blu-ray (the included remastered Blu-ray also enjoys this 7.1 track). I know some lament the lack of a more expansive object-based track like an Atmos mix but this track is still aggressive and engaging throughout with plenty of heft for the bigger action sequences while letting quieter conversational moments register. Levels are spot on, so no worries about adjusting as you go along. With a constantly active soundscape to work with, your front/center and surround channels feel appropriately immersive. Again, the more exciting and action-packed the sequence is the more active the surround stage, but even in quiet scenes within the Nexus, there’s a welcome feel for atmosphere and imaging. Dialog is clean and clear without issue and Jerry Goldsmith’s score is another excellent piece of work for the franchise.

star trek 4k box set

Continuing the trend, Star Trek: Insurrection beams down with an active and often impressive Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track. While not as active as First Contact , there’s plenty of surround immersion to enjoy. The last half of the film picks up offering a nice soundstage to play in with plenty of front/center, side, and rear activity. The assault on the Ba’ku with the teleporting drones and laser blasts is a solid sequence giving the mix a full range to play with while rumbling the low end. Given the number of quiet conversational moments, there’s not a lot of big explosive material to highlight, but even the simple activity of the Ba’ku village is enough to keep the channels working. Dialog is clean and clear without issue. Once again Goldsmith’s score gets ample opportunity to shine with another all-around solid audio mix. Maybe not the best of these latest Trek releases, but certainly an improvement over the old TrueHD 5.1 tracks

star trek 4k box set

Star Trek: Nemesis also enjoys a full-throated active and engaging Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track. As silly as that dune buggy blaster battle race was, it sounds fantastic! Much like First Contact , a little more action goes a long way with this mix. The soundscape feels wide and expansive for those big open sequences in the desert or in Shinzon’s main hall but then can tighten up and feel claustrophobic for the battle on the Scimitar. Blaster fire and explosions and the hum of warp engines add some fun rumble into the subs. Dialog is clean and clear throughout without issue - Tom Hardy doesn’t do a goofy voice in this film. As the final completed score from Jerry Goldsmith before he passed away, it’s a great piece of work and sounds teriffic in this mix. There are quiet conversational moments that keep things relatively front/center focused, but there’s enough small activity in the sides and music in the rears to keep your channels engaged throughout. (The remastered Blu-ray enjoys this same excellent new 7.1 track as well).

Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection brings the last four Star Trek films to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Generations , First Contact , Insurrection , and Nemesis round out the cinematic missions for Patrick Stewart’s tenure as captain of the Enterprise. The films range from good to amazing to pretty bad to just mediocre. Thankfully the latest season of Picard is delivering a suitable cast reunion. It’s a shame their big-screen adventures couldn’t have been as grand. But as far as 4K discs go, these films each earn high marks. If you’re after all of the films, this four-film eight-disc box set is the most convenient way to add them to the collection. Each film earns an excellent Dolby Vision transfer with Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track to match complete with hours of bonus features. But since only one or two are really worth revisiting on a regular basis, the mileage of this set over picking up the individual single-title editions may vary for film fans. Recommended

'Star Trek: The Original Motion Pictures Collection' 4K Set Proves Physical Media is Essential (Review)

By Daniel S. Levine - September 4, 2022 10:49 pm EDT

Star Trek fans have been buying collections of the six Original Series crew movies repeatedly, every time a new format comes along. It's time to buy them all again, thanks to Paramount 's new Star Trek: The Original Motion Pictures 6-Movie Collection on 4K UltraHD. The set follows last year's four-movie set but adds the newly recreated Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director's Cut , and the 4K releases of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . These three films are also being released individually on Sept. 6, alongside a deluxe edition of The Motion Picture – Director's Cut that comes with additional bells and whistles.

The new six-movie pack includes seven 4K discs, as it also includes the theatrical cut of The Motion Picture on its own disc. There are also eight Blu-rays since The Motion Picture bonus material has its own disc as well. The Blu-rays include just about every conceivable bonus feature carried over from the DVDs, as well as multiple commentary tracks. You even get the director's cuts of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered County . It's a dizzying amount of stuff that could take any fan days to get through.

As for the movies themselves, the Star Trek movie franchise famously got off to a rocky start with The Motion Picture in 1979. Directed by Robert Wise ( The Sound of Music, West Side Story ), the theatrical version of the film is a plodding experience that can test anyone's patience. In 2001, Paramount granted Wise the chance to finish the post-production he was robbed of in 1979, and the result was a much better-paced movie, even if it does run a few minutes longer. Still, there's no way to fix the flaws embedded deep within The Motion Picture . From the odd pajamas Gene Roddenberry chose for the Starfleet uniforms to the neverending journey into V'ger, it's just not a great movie. Earlier this year, Paramount put together a team to basically remake the director's cut in 4K high definition since the director's cut was originally made in standard definition. That's why it wasn't included in the previous 4K set. The re-making of the film is detailed in a great documentary on the extra Blu-ray disc called The Human Adventure . The disc also includes some recently discovered deleted sequences, along with all the other deleted scenes from previous releases.

Once you get over the Motion Picture speed bump, you get to the heart of the Original Series crew's movies. Nicholas Meyer was given the full authority from Paramount to essentially reboot Star Trek with The Wrath of Kahn . It's not only the best Star Trek movie, but it's also one of the most entertaining blockbusters of the 1980s. It, alongside Raiders of the Lost Ark , may supposedly run two hours, but Khan never feels like it. Khan defined the look of the Original Series crew's cycle, setting up the next two films, both directed by Leonard Nimoy .

There's an idea that only the even-numbered Trek movies are any good, but The Search for Spock should dispel that. For a movie that only exists for one purpose – reviving Spock – it's really fun and helps continue to shape Captain Kirk's emotional core. It also leads right into The Voyage Home , a real classic. It's interesting to realize how much in common The Voyage Home has with The Motion Picture , and understand why one works and the other doesn't. They both dispense with a typical villain and see 23rd Century Earth threatened by a problem that can only be solved by an understanding of the 20th Century. The Voyage Home is brimming with humor, as it never takes itself too seriously. The Motion Picture goes hard in the other direction, getting bogged down in its desperation to turn a simple plot into a Lawrence of Arabia -style '60s epic.

As previously mentioned, the last two films are making their 4K UltraHD debuts with this set. The Final Frontier , William Shatner 's one shot to direct, is a total disaster of a movie. He may have had an interesting idea – a Vulcan who rejects logic and tries to find God at the center of the universe – but he was never able to get his vision on the screen. It's impossible to know if it would ever really work, thanks to Paramount's budget cuts and refusal to let him release a two-hour movie. The end result is a movie that has its best scenes in the first 10 minutes, when Spock, Bones, and Kirk are just sitting by the campfire.

Thankfully, the Original Series crew got to make one last movie. Meyer was brought back to direct The Undiscovered Country . Although certainly not a classic on the level of Khan , it is perfect as a swan song for the team. Showing a 23rd Century version of the Iron Curtain falling could have been a boring, didactic exercise, but Meyer found a way to make it entertaining in a Shakespearean way. Plus, it doesn't hurt to have Christopher Plummer.

Most of the people buying this set have undoubtedly seen these films countless times. However, the 4K format really brings them to life. There isn't a bad transfer in the bunch. The biggest issue is the cheap packaging, with the movies crammed by format in two chunky plastic cases housed in a simple cardboard sleeve. It's really disappointing, considering the premium cost for the big set. Thankfully, 4K and Blu-ray discs have to get really deep surface scratches to make them unplayable, so cleaning scuff marks  off them should make them playable. (It's not something anyone should have to do, but you might need to.) The movies are all wildly entertaining, and the hours of bonus features prove that physical media is absolutely essential.

The ultimate version of director Robert Wise’s definitive edition of the first Star Trek feature film is finally coming home this fall. Paramount has announced the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Directors Edition on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, including a special limited edition release. They are also putting out a new collection (and individual releases) of the first six Star Trek movies.

Bring home TMP and all the TOS movies in 4K

Paramount Home Entertainment just announced that the newly restored Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition  will arrive September 6, 2022 on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with a bonus Blu-ray Disc that includes new and legacy special features. The film will also be released in a Limited-Edition Collector’s Set entitled “The Complete Adventure,” which includes the new Director’s Edition, the theatrical cut, and the special longer cut (originally broadcast on ABC in 1983), all on 4K Ultra HD, along with special features on Blu-ray. In addition, Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection will arrive on September 6 with all six big-screen adventures featuring the original series crew on 4K Ultra HD.

The Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was first released on DVD in 2001. In 2021, producer David C. Fein, post-production supervisor Mike Matessino, and visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman returned to revise the Director’s Edition into 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision and high dynamic range (HDR). This new version was initially released for streaming exclusively on Paramount+ in April (see TrekMovie.com review )

“The Director’s Edition on 4k Ultra HD delivers an experience that is far more intimate, engaging, and powerful thanks to the hard work of everyone involved,” said Fein in a statement.

Star Trek Coffees Launching In May With Several Blends

Sothey aren’t making a separate bulk package for 5,6, and The Director’s Edition? I have to buy them separately if I already have the original motion picture set they released last year? So, another cash grab? Great.

As a collector, I like uniformity. First world problems I know. But c’mon. Ridiculous.

I’m sure you will be able to get them separately on Ebay from vendors who break them up for individual sales.

You will. They state that above. My frustration is that there is not just a 5, 6, and TMPDE package. Everybody paid $75 a year ago for the four film package. Now we’ll have to $100 for the same stuff all over again.

Actually….a lot of us knew they were gonna pull this, but I imagine they only bothered with the rest because last years’ sold well so…..thank you for your service! …………*tip toes off stage right*

Good point!

Surprised nobody is pissed that the extended cut of TMP is an exclusive mega set and not getting a standard blu. There will always be someone not happy.

(Raises hand) Me-! I don’t care for all the merchandising trinkets and I already have the theatrical cut in the previous box set, so basically I’m paying £35 just to get the extended cut. Still – it’s what I expected, so can’t complain too much.

It’s the extended cut that has all kinds of mistakes. So not a big deal. The stuff that matters is in the DC. I don’t need need to see Kirk’s space suit change in every scene in the V’ger sequence.

I understand, but I am buying TMP, V, and VI separately since I don’t want to buy 2-4 yet again. It won’t be in one box, but I’ll save a bit of money.

I’d love to have seen the standard Star Trek TMP DE 4K release include a Blu-ray copy of the DE, as well as 4K and Blu-ray disks of the Theatrical Edition. Since I don’t have a 4K setup yet, and cannot justify the funds for the Complete Adventure, I would likely have to have the Blu-day versions if V, VI and the DE for now (I have individual Blu-rays of the remastered I thru V). Otherwise, I’d have to simply pony up for the 6 movie set to get everything related to all 6 to be future proofed on all 6 films at once.

They have blu ray edition of ST DE remaster.

Kinda what I said. ;) I since decided to get the 6 film collection and sell on my remastered Blu-rays for TMP, II, III and IV (as they would be duplicates. This gives me everything I want (No interest in the TV cut) and future-proofs me for going to 4K. An expensive thing, but it closes the book on these films, IMHO. If they do a similar set for the 4 TNG movies next year (likely, IMHO), I’ll cross that bridge then.

Looking forward to the BD of TMP. I’d like to finally see this in HD. Not interested in the 4K versions of the other films. What they really need is a BD version of the others. From what I understand only WoK was upgraded to HD on the original BluRay set.

All of the other films have been available on Blu-Ray for years at full 1080P resolution. What you’re talking about is that the only WOK and TMP have been ‘remastered” to give the best 1080P or 4K viewing experience possible.

What I am talking about is the BD movie set that became available in 2009 if I recall correctly. They had but one true HD transfer. WoK. The rest where not upgraded. Including TMP. Which was the original theatrical cut, not the Director’s cut that was released on DVD prior. And one could tell when watching the disks. Other disks were subsequently released some 4 years or so later but from what I read they weren’t in HD for some reason. If they came out in HD sometime since 2016 or so then I was unaware of it.

The Blu-rays included with this set, either in the 15 disc box or the individual cases, are all remastered from the 4k transfers and are HD and superior to the 2009 Blu-rays.

While they (I am talking about Trek III, IV, V and VI) are new 4K transfers from an existing film print, I have yet to read whether they have done a full remastering/restoration effort on these films. If they haven’t, then for the marginal difference in quality, I will not be buying 4K’s on those four movies.

And both the 2009 and 2016 Blu-Rays were true 1080P transfers, not just upscaled DVD’s. The quality of them wasn’t at great as it could be though because they did not do a full remastering/restoration of those, like what was done this year for TMP and in 2017 for WOK.

BTW, if someone got Trek BD’s and they look clearly like upscaled DVD’s then they must have illegally sold pirated discs.

Yeah, whatever criticism one has of the 09 discs, it shouldn’t be based on the misconception that they are upscaled dvds, cuz they clearly ain’t. Although I’m a huge critic of DNR — see PATTON for the best evidence why — I honestly found the 09 transfers — especially TMP — to very closely resemble my theatrical experiences of the films, for better and for worse. If you look at the close shot of pre-wormhole Kirk and McCoy on the bridge on the 1980 calendar, THAT is exactly how the movie looked to me in the theater, and the 09 seemed to match that very closely (not a fan of the lighting at all, but reproduction seemed accurate as all get out.)

I hadn’t intended to buy the four disk version that came out recently, mainly because I think they have damaged the VFX irreparably (mainly on TMP) with their new smoothing to try to hide matte lines, but nearly all of my 09 blu rays started hanging up in both of my machines in the last few months, plus I found a new set of the 4k/blu combos for under $40, so it didn’t seem like too bad of a deal. Am still unsure if I’ll even ever watch the latest ‘director’ version, as I’ve found most of the changes by these folks to be downgrades or sidegrades rather than improvements.

I suppose if I had the time and skillset, I’d try to import the original theatrical soundmix over the director cut in order to keep the wormhole scene sounding threatening. Ever since the original DE version, the sound in the wormhole scene, especially the alert siren, has wrecked the sequence for me, and it actually makes me think each time I tried to watch it (before I gave the disk away, about a decade back) of the bit in KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE’s ‘fistful of yen’ sequence where you see somebody looking like Eddie Deezen making an ‘alert’ sound with his mouth during an action sequence. But then that’d still leave the things that any new cut should have changed and didn’t, like the guy fleeing Epsilon 9, which is still among the worst looking things I’ve ever seen in a major motion picture.

I have the 2009 box set and the difference from WoK to the other 5 is pretty clear. I then read that WoK was indeed the only one that got the actual full HD transfer. So while the subsequent releases may be true HD rest assured the 2009 set 5 of the 6 were not. And no, it was obviously not some pirated or illegally sold set. That’s just nuts.

I just went back and read the original HighDefDigest-dot-com reviews of the 2009 Blu-Rays. All are full 1080 HD transfers from film prints to BR, but WOK special restoration work so it looks better. None of the movies are SD transfers to Blu-Ray.

Yea, the 2009 BR’s are 1080P HD transfers, not SD transfers to BR.

all of them were true HD scans / transfers – only WoK got restoration work done. (Until TMP)

Bring on the director’s and improved edition of Star Trek V!

You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

Final Frontier is the first Trek I saw in the theater , so it is special to me.

Also think it is the best looking Enterprise , interior and exterior, of the first six movies and I also really like how much it feels like an episode.

I get that! :-)

TFF is the last Trek movie I flat-out loved, so it is special to me for that reason. And I think a lot of the interiors are very nice, and it is easily my favorite bridge, though the less said about the exteriors, the better!)

The effects were awful. You would have to redo all of them. They don’t have the filming model of the Enterprise anymore. Jerry Goldsmith isn’t alive to rescore new scenes. At best you could do a cgi directors cut. And reuse the already composed music.

I’ve seen a few fan recreations using CGI. Some are subpar, others are pretty good. It could be done. The script though…

That is exactly how I meant it. 😉

i really don’t get why paramount released the film in that condition. from using trumball ,d ykstra and ILM to these awful FX shots is a travesty that undercut the film’s chances at the box office

They didn’t have a choice, either the vendors were busy or they didn’t have the dough

I was just about to say release the Shatner cut.

Yes. The Shatner cut with new enhanced effects which are on pair with the other movies and how they were meant to be. By the way: you could add some “new” canon and give him the line “how could I kill the brother of Michael Burnham”… lol.

Please do update us. We want that TMP box set!!!

Will be getting that boxed set on Day 1 of release! Thanks!

I will be getting the deluxe TMP set because it has the Special Longer cut. I don’t care its like a hundred bucks. I’ll be getting the V and VI 4k combos as well because i already have the 1-4 set. When is the TNG movies coming?

I am going to be waiting until they do a remaster of VI before I plunk down $$ for the 4K version, as I am skeptical that the existing non-remastered print of that film will look much different in quality to my eyes than my existing 1080P Blu-Ray of that film.

I kind of want the home video version in 1080P and 4K but i understand why it is the theatrical and the directors cut only being upgraded. The initial home video cut was never in HD.

Wan’t the home video cut the same cut as the DC?

nope. The DVD cut put in new inserts when Spock is doing his mind meld with Valeris. As the names of the conspirators are revealed. Its not in the original home video cut.

I double checked. Yes, the DC is the same cut as the 113 min. Cut that was on VHS and DVD

Was really looking forward to watching TMP DE on Paramount+ when it launched in the UK (feck you, P+, I wasn’t asking for much!). Thoroughly excited for September now.

I’d like to see the proposed tv-pilot-version with the Phase-II model of the Enterprise and “demastered” effects. 😉

I saw it in the theatre, was suitably impressed by the sound design and enhanced visuals, and will doubtless buy it. But, make no mistake — this is still 1979’s STAR TREK; THE MOTION PICUTURE, with all its faults and virtues still mostly intact. If you can live with the former because of the latter, by all means have at it.

So….wait. In order to get the TMP Directors Edition Bluray, I have to buy it separately from the 4K UHD disc…even in the The Complete Adventure set???

That’s just absolutely frustrating. I was hoping to get both in one package like the rest of the films. I don’t have anything to play 4K ultra yet but it would be nice to have had both in a single set for when I do. Gah. Paramount…be consistent for goodness sake.

If you don’t have anything to play 4K UHD yet then simply get the separate Bluray disc. If you ever decide to upgrade your playback equipment to 4K in the future chances are good that the 4K discs will be much cheaper by then than they are now.

Also the Special Longer Version is 4K only, and only in that hundred dollar set. So if all you do is Blu-Ray you can’t watch it. It is an exclusive. It isn’t unheard of Warner released the 70mm version of Superman exclusive to 4K, Paramount only put out the remastered Indiana Jones sets in 4K, and reprinted the earlier blu sets. Batman Begins was remastered exclusively for 4K and so on. Lucasfilm only bundled the remastered Star Wars sets in the USA with the 4K and in the best buy Saga set, the standard DVD and the blu rays were the older transfers.

I’ll just order the UK version as it apparently has the bluray of the new DE.

If only I had anything that played physical media any more. :)

Except my turntable and records.

Don’t tell my wife I’m getting the $100 Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition—The Complete Adventure 4K Ultra HD set!!!! Sure I might have to buy a 4K Blu-Ray player for the discs to work and my 2009 DLP TV can’t do 4K, but I don’t care.

Do I need help?😁

I pre-ordered the $100 TMP set, AND bought a 4k player and TV… And the wife didn’t kill me. (Helps I got an amazing price on the TV, and recently got a bonus at work…)

Don’t own any 4k discs yet, but damn, do I see a difference even with a regular blu-ray disc. The wife even commented on how clear everything looked.

The Director’s Edition is the best version of the film, but I will be happy to see the TV cut again. Curious how the shot of Kirk leaving the ship will look with the proper background put in place. (Funny I am excited to see that, but still upset that the 4k Director’s Edition fixed Spock & McCoy’s arm band color switch-a-roo.)

But if you need help, I need more help!

Being distinctly underwhelmed by what I’ve seen and heard about the new DE TMP, I was going to pass on purchasing-but that Complete Adventure boxset is just too tempting. i don’t yet own the 4K theatrical, those collectors items look nice, and I loved the SLV as a kid and would love to own it in better than decent quality. Resistance is futile I think. Interestingly, the UK preorder price on Amazon is £60-around $82-so what’s with the $100 price tag stateside? I hope it doesn’t mean we Brits are getting fewer discs/special features in the set?

Long version is my favorite cut of the movie, but $97 for it? Jeez.

I’m glad I have the 50th Anniversary set with all the documentaries included with it , because I don’t think aside from maybe the Khan documentary any of those are part of these sets.

The Complete Adventure UK version comprises 5 discs (three 4K discs and two blu rays) according to Amazon and HMV. The US version has three discs, according to Amazon.com and Bluray.com (two 4K discs and one blu ray). However, we Brits don’t receive digital copies with our discs, so I’m assuming that one of those extra blurays is a replacement disc of the movie in lieu of a missing digital code? And according to Amazon, the DE is in the set on both 4K and blu ray, but that only seems to be the case in the UK version. It’s a bit confused at the moment, and some of this info may well turn out to be wrong, but no doubt we’ll be updated here soon with confirmation of set contents. In any case, I’m legitimately excited!

Correction: two 4k discs and three blu rays in the UK set.

Interesting. I have high-end Region Free 4K Panasonic BD players, so I have the option of ordering those from Amazon UK if it’s a better set. Thanks!

That’s cool. But assuming Amazon UK’s info is correct, the set is region free anyhow.

Oops, scratch that. The 4K’s would obviously be region free, but the blu rays would likely be region B…

I’ll be ordering the UK version if that’s the case.

I’m pretty sure the extra discs on the set-with one version of the film per disc-would be there to replace the digital codes which Brits won’t get. That seems logical. So overall content for both versions will be the same, with no-one being short-changed. The only notable difference is that while US consumers will probably receive their second copy of the DE as a digital file (in possibly up to 4K quality), British consumers will likely have their second version of the DE as a 1080p blu ray. So, for US customers the decision regarding which Complete Adventure set to purchase will be based (aside from region coding issues) on whether their preference is for all-physical media, or a combination of physical and digital.

From what I saw on Amazon, I believe all the disks are region free.

As far as I can tell, this is how the sets break down…

US 3 Disks – 4K of DE (Same as 4K standalone and 6 movie set) – 4K of Theatrical and SLV (Exclusive, seamless branching) – Blu-ray of DE Special Features (Same as 4K standalone, Blu-ray standalone and 6 movie set)

UK 5 Disks – 4K of DE (Same as 4K standalone and 6 movie set) – 4K of Theatrical and SLV (Exclusive, seamless branching) – Blu-ray of DE Special Features (Same as 4K standalone, Blu-ray standalone and 6 movie set) – Blu-ray of DE (Same as Blu-ray standalone and 6 movie set) – Blu-ray of Theatrical with Special Features ( Same as Blu-ray standalone from last year and 6 movie set )

That’s how it looks. Of course the US set should also include a digital code for the DE, and possibly another for the theatrical version.

Honestly, as much as I want the theatrical cut and the Special, Longer Version of TMP, the packaging of The Complete Adventure (plus the price) kills interest for me as the discs slot into the cardboard packaging and those ALWAYS rip or stretch over time. I’ll be buying the individual releases of all 6 movies. Or at least TMP and TUC, since I don’t have a 4K set-up yet and I have the 2009 releases of the others (plus the Director’s Edition of TWOK).

Will there be a UK pre order up soon for the six movie set?

I look forward to the longer version originally aired on ABC. I got that on VHS in the 1980s and that is the version of TMP I grew up with. Finally……….

Hope they fix the observation lounge scene from the HD remaster.. that scene is just so badly rotoscoped and VFX’ed that it’s actually distracting…

Agreed. Hopefully that got a little extra love before they committed it to disc.

Why no announcement of 5 and 6 being released in the UK, I wonder?

Having recently purchased the Director’s edition of The Motion Picture on dvd (yes this is the first time I have seen it!) I had a thought after buying the Wrath Of Khan Director’s cut which also includes the theatrical edition, that maybe they should release a theatrical, director’s, and longer cut of TMP…so after seeing this article I was absolutely elated! But then suddenly deflated as I have a blu-ray player but understand (and please forgive my ignorance here as I hope someone on this website could confirm for me) that the longer version of TMP will only play on a 4k player? If the director’s edition is on blu-ray then why not just release all 3 versions on blu-ray to highest picture quality that is available on blu-ray? I’m so gutted now…so near…and yet so far…

Well, Amazon now has definitive proof that I’m a sucker…

Can’t wait to be one again when they put out a new set which includes the TNG movies! And then another which has the Kelvins as well!

Steelbooks on the way I hope?

It appears that the UK 4K releases will replace the “bonus” digital code version with a standard Blu-ray (region-free?) That maybe the future proof solution for me. I know the 4K would be region free…not sure of the Blu-ray.

Yep, this seems to be the case, extra discs instead of digital for the UK. As for the blu rays being region free, Amazon UK has the set listed as such, as New Horizon pointed out, and I’ve checked on Zaavi and it’s also listed there as Region A, B, C. They’re probably okay, but if you want to shop with confidence you can await further confirmation from the Trekmovie guys.

It’s confirmed on The Digital Bits, that the Theatrical and SLV versions will be together on one UHD via seamless branching.

This is very true. I’m grateful that the 6 movie set, the Complete Adventure sets and the standalone Blu-ray preserves the theatrical version of the movie. So it isn’t the George Lucas approach.

The only thing that is Lucasized is the newly redone director’s edition. Everything else is theatrical and is the way the movie looked. The only severe disappointment for me was no original audio it’s kind of a dealbreaker.

For any Brits who are interested, the TMP Directors Cut will be showing in major theatres across the UK for a limited period from Friday August 19th. The Wrath of Khan Directors Cut follows on September 2nd.

A review of the US set just popped up on The Digital Bits. Interesting read, at least until we get the Trekmovie review we’re all waiting for. Incidentally I’m delighted to learn that the blu ray theatrical version included in the UK set is of the 2021 remastered version, not the old steelbook version which I already own. This may seem redundant since we’ll have the 4k theatrical anyway, but I just like the idea of everything being up to date, plus, I won’t feel as if there’s a ”wasted’ disc in the set. This truly feels like it’s going to be the last word re: this classic movie.

I have the 1-4 set the theatrical was a treat for TMP. It isn’t perfect by any stretch though there is digital noise reduction or DNR on the optical effects, a fix they applied to blur out the obvious arm holding the model of the Enterprise made the picture quality for the worse in those shots. And to cap it all off there is no original stereo theatrical audio mix which would have been in theaters. But the live action photography is very filmic. And it doesn’t appear like DNR was applied across the entire picture like the Directors Edition redo.

I just ordered mine. Of V and VI in 4K combo. And the director’s edition Blu-Ray because there isn’t a combo, they are making us buy the 4K and Blu-Ray separately. So, I opted to only get the Blu-Ray. A hundred-dollar set is quite out of the question for me when the Special Longer is only on UHD and there is no Blu-Ray.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) will be presented in 4K UHD with HDR-10 and Dolby Vision, boldly remastered from the original film elements; a Blu-ray disc containing the remastered presentation will also be included. (A standalone Blu-ray is also available.)

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country  (1991) will be presented in 4K UHD with HDR-10 and Dolby Vision, boldly remastered from the original film elements; a Blu-ray disc containing the remastered presentation will also be included. (A standalone Blu-ray is also available.)

Notably, this edition of  Star Trek VI will include Nicholas Meyer’s director’s cut of the film, which includes sequences cut from the theatrical edition — including the appearance of Rene Auberjonois as devious Starfleet strategist Colonel West, and some edits to the Spock/Valeris mind-meld sequence near the end of the film.

Those scenes have previously been available only on VHS, DVD, and in certain streaming-service presentations of the movie; this will be the first time the Star Trek VI director’s cut will be available in high definition on home media.

After beaming down to Paramount+ back in April, the long-awaited 4K remaster of  Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition is finally arriving on disc September 6, in a two-disc set packed full of new behind-the-scenes bonus content (as well as bonus features from previous releases).

While a two-disc standard Blu-ray release is also available, the two-disc 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition will feature The Director’s Edition in Dolby Vision and HDR-10, as well as with a Dolby Atmos sound mix for those of you with supporting home theater systems.

Here are the full contents:

DISC ONE · NEW! Audio Commentary with David C. Fein, Mike Matessino, and Daren R. Dochterman · Audio Commentary by Robert Wise, Douglas Trumbull, John Dykstra, Jerry Goldsmith, and Stephen Collins (from 2001 DVD release) · Text Commentary by Michael and Denise Okuda (from 2001 DVD release) DISC TWO · NEW! The Human Adventure —An all-new 8-part documentary detailing how the Director’s Edition came to life – Preparing the Future: How the remastering began – A Wise Choice: The storied history of Robert Wise – Refitting the Enterprise: How the Enterprise design shaped future federation starships – Sounding Off: Exploring new dimensions of sound in Dolby Atmos – V’ger: The conception and restoration of an iconic alien antagonist – Return to Tomorrow: Reaching an already high bar with new CGI effects – A Grand Theme: Behind the iconic, influential music score that shaped the franchise’s -future – The Grand Vision: The legacy and evolving reputation of this classic movie · NEW! Deleted Scenes · NEW! Effects Tests · NEW! Costume Tests · NEW! Computer Display Graphics · Additional legacy bonus content

While the new commentary from the trio of driving forces behind the  Director’s Edition is a lovely inclusion, the one thing this does seem to be missing is the 2007 audio commentary track Fein, Matessino, and Dochterman recorded for the DVD edition of the film which we’ve saved in the TrekCore archives here for posterity — so if you want that for your legacy DVD copy of The Director’s Edition , you’re welcome!

The fully-remastered and enhanced  Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition will also released in a massive three-disc special limited set this September, as The Complete Adventure will contain not only the  Director’s Edition and theatrical cut of the film in 4K UHD, but it will also include 1983 “Special Longer Version” as an exclusive feature.

Producer David C. Fein also confirmed the “Special Longer Version” 4K edition will include one shot of previously-unfinished VFX, which we’ve learned will be a fix for the infamous exposed-rafters shot from Kirk’s spacewalk departure.

There is one previously unfinished vfx shot, yes. — David C. Fein (@DavidCFein) July 6, 2022

The “Special Longer Version” (also known as the “ABC cut”) included nearly 12 minutes of additional footage not seen in the theatrical edition which originally aired on ABC in the United States in 1983 and had a decent life on home media up until the mid-1990s. This will be the first official release of this cut of  The Motion Picture  since its last VHS edition in 1991.

Beyond two additional cuts of the film (which will not be on the standalone 4K release of The Director’s Edition ), the additional on-disc bonus content will be identical to the standalone TMP:DE set.

Full contents:

· NEW! Star Trek: The Motion Picture —The Director’s Edition (4K) · NEW! Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition Bonus Content (Blu-ray) · NEW! Star Trek: The Motion Picture Theatrical Edition + Special Longer Version (4K)

Along with the on-disc content,  The Complete Adventure also includes replica  Motion Picture promotional material, stickers, poster art, and more in its oversized packaging. The limited edition The Complete Adventure set also arrives September 6 and is available for preorder today.

As for the four  Star Trek: The Next Generation films, while not announced for 2022, we highly expect them to follow on 4K Blu-ray in 2023 to coincide with the return of the TNG cast in the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard; the remastered edition of  Star Trek: First Contact is already available on Paramount+.

In the meantime, let us know what versions of the classic  Star Trek films you’re going to be adding to your own collection as we wait for September to get here!

Battlestar Galactic Isn't Available To Stream, So This Blu-Ray Box Set Deal Is Awesome

This Blu-ray box set of Battlestar Galactica comes with all four seasons and an impressive amount of extra content as well.

By Darryn Bonthuys on April 23, 2024 at 9:43AM PDT

We're living in an impressive era for sci-fi, and you can thank shows like Battlestar Galactica for raising the bar of episodic storytelling when it debuted in 2004. If you're looking to revisit this modern classic--which is a reboot of the 1978 TV series--Amazon has discounted the Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series Blu-ray Box Set from $100 to $62. It's worth mentioning that Battlestar isn't available with any streaming subscription services in the US. Instead, episodes cost roughly three bucks each on Prime Video , while each season can set you back $35. Needless to say, $62 is actually quite the bargain for all four seasons.

Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series

This is a 21-disc box set, and inside you'll find all four seasons of the show, the special episode Razor, and the finale film The Plan. Each season and special also comes with a ton of extras, like documentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, webisodes, deleted scenes, and much more. This version also has a high-definition presentation and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound support, so you're getting a cinematic experience if you have the right setup for it.

This reimagining of Battlestar Galactica kept the basic plot of the original series and detailed how the remnants of humanity were in a desperate fight for survival against the synthetic Cylon race. After the Cylons succeeded in wiping out billions of humans who had colonized a cluster of planets, the survivors flee to the Battlestar Galactica and begin a long trek in search of a fabled thirteenth colony known as Earth. Despite its low-budget beginnings, Battlestar Galactica quickly earned rave reviews for its high-quality production, ensemble cast, and its examination of what it means to be human amidst several other high-level concepts.

For more Battlestar, you can grab the complete original series on DVD for $22 , down from $45. Meanwhile, the original movie released on 4K Blu-ray last year and is available for $17 at Amazon.

If you're looking for more sci-fi, you can also check out this deal on Babylon 5 . It's a groundbreaking series in its own right, and the Blu-ray box set has been discounted to almost half its list price at Amazon, dropping the cost to $71.
