When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

“A Tanzania safari can be booked throughout the year, but the best time depends on your interests. If seeing the wildebeest migration is the main focus of your visit, you will have to plan carefully. June to October is the best period to see the migration in the Serengeti, but you’ll have to stay in different areas of the park at different stages of the migration, and as this all depends on the rain, this isn’t completely dependable. If you want to get away from the crowds, you should book your accommodation in the Serengeti away from the wildebeest migration. The wettest months are March to May, and any safari might be compromised at this time.”

Why visit Tanzania, what are the major attractions?

“Tanzania is the quintessential safari destination, offering both quality and quantity. The wildlife viewing is superb and there is just so much choice in terms of places to visit and things to do. In fact, it would be hard to experience all of the highlights even in three Tanzania holidays, let alone one. There are three distinct safari circuits: the most popular Northern safari circuit includes famous places such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The lesser-known Southern circuit centers on Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) and Ruaha National Park. The off-the-beaten-track Western circuit includes Katavi National Park and the chimpanzee reserves on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. Avid mountain climbers might be surprised to learn the highest peak in Africa is in Tanzania. Mt Kilimanjaro lies between Kenya and Tanzania but is climbed from the Tanzanian side.”

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

“Tanzania tours are not geared toward big groups. The best way to see the parks is on a bespoke safari for two or four people who book together as a family or group of friends, though that obviously comes at a price. You should budget a starting price of US$500 per person per day, but it is difficult to put a specific figure on a trip, as a lot of variables need to be taken into account. For example, camping safaris are generally cheaper than lodge safaris. Conversely, the Serengeti and some other parks in the Northern circuit have big hotels that are much cheaper than the small, exclusive lodges and tented camps – although the latter are often more basic. The season makes a big difference too. Discounted rates apply if you are willing to travel in the rainy season, while you’ll pay a premium to visit during the height of the wildebeest migration.”

How is the wildlife viewing in Tanzania?

“The wildlife viewing in Tanzania is superb. A Tanzania safari in the Northern circuit takes in Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Any of these parks offer fantastic game viewing, although some of it is seasonal. Doing the whole circuit enhances the experience as you’ll be going through a variety of habitats and environments. Due to the sizes of the parks, it is possible to get away from the crowds, but as the Northern circuit is the most popular circuit, you will be surrounded by other tourists at times. If you really want to get away from all that, you can visit the Southern circuit, where the game viewing is slightly more challenging but very good all the same. This circuit is perhaps more suited to repeat Africa visitors who are less driven to tick off the Big Five.”

How safe is Tanzania for tourists?

“Tanzania has a slick and experienced tourist industry, and a Tanzanian safari overall is very safe. That said, there is a lot of petty crime in big cities such as Dar es Salaam, so walking around alone isn’t recommended. Tourists sometimes get targeted in Arusha and other urban tourist hot spots, but most of the time the hassle is benign and is really just touts wanting to sell things (anything from safaris to beaded necklaces). Being firm and standing your ground is usually all it takes to diffuse any situation. In any case, most people on Tanzanian tours don’t spend very much (or any) time in urban centers, so none of this is likely to be a concern.”

How do I select a reliable Tanzanian tour operator?

“Tanzania is a popular African safari destination and many large reputable operators working in Africa sell Tanzanian holidays. Most operators offer pretty much the same packages and the differences will mostly lie in the quality of the guides and vehicles. If you have a special interest, you might want to do some research and look for operators catering to that; for example, some packages are more geared toward walking safaris or fly camping (where the whole camp gets set up for you at a special private campsite). You can compare Tanzania safari prices and packages on SafariBookings.com. Always read the reviews as they will give you a good indication of reliability and the quality of the guides.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“The safari industry in Tanzania is well established and there is a good variety of accommodation on offer. Going with an outfitter offering comfortable camping safaris is not only the most budget-friendly way to travel, but it also adds to the sense of adventure. If real camping isn’t your thing, but you like the romance of tented accommodation, there are tented camps (with actual beds and flushing toilets inside) offering different levels of luxury. For those visitors that prefer to spend their evenings in less of a bush environment, there are hotels that provide a total disconnect from the countryside, which also means less chance of creepy-crawlies in your room. The current trend, however, is toward exclusive designer lodges blending into the environment and offering an unparalleled level of luxury and service. The sky is the limit!”

“When on a Tanzania tour, you can expect an experience of a lifetime – or maybe the first of many more to come. Once the safari bug has bitten, people tend to return over and over again to experience the African bush. It is hard to stay away for too long. Tanzania is the perfect destination for first-time safaris as the wildlife viewing and African landscapes in the Northern circuit are all you could hope for, and more. Tanzania is also the perfect destination for repeat visitors, as your first visit won’t even scratch the surface of the touring options. Seasoned African safari enthusiasts will enjoy some of the more remote parks, with different animals such as African wild dogs in the Southern circuit and chimpanzees in the west.”

This 8-day safari includes game viewing in the Tarangire National Park, known for its large herds of elephants and scenic baobabs, in the Ngorongoro Crater, and in the North of the Serengeti.

This is an ideal combination all year long, especially during the months of July to October when the large herds of migrating wildebeest and zebras are within the area. Typically in August-September, the wildebeests start crossing the Mara River into Kenya, one of the most wonderful wildlife spectacles on earth.

Arrival at Kilimanjaro airport, collect your luggage and pass customs before transiting to the domestic terminal, on time to catch the flight to Kuro. Depending on your flight you might require a pre-night in Arusha, contact us for options.

Arrival at Kuro airstrip, meet by your guide and transfer to camp via a meandering game drive. Arrive at camp and relax before the afternoon game drive and dinner. Your stay includes a night drive as well.

The camp is located on a game corridor, not far from the river, it is often visited by animals - elephant, antelopes, buffalo - and birds. The tents are large with buckets showers (inside and outside) and large decks where you can curl up with a book and look at the scenery in between the game drives. After breakfast, road transfer to Entamanu, located on the Crater Rim. You arrive at camp on time for a late lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure to take in the beautiful scenery, walk about on the property, chat to your safari guide to plan the next day with the game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater.

From Entamanu you can see the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti plains from the same spot. It is high up and can be quite cold, the camp has fireplaces and warm water bottle to make your stay super cozy.

The three-million-year-old Ngorongoro Crater was once a gigantic volcano that some suggest was even higher than Mt Kilimanjaro. The resident wildlife is diverse and easily tracked – cheetah, elephant, hyena, hippo, lion, leopard, and a vast array of bird life. After the day game viewing and a packed picnic lunch on the Crater floor, return to camp for dinner and night.

FAQs about Tanzania Safari and Great Migration

• The great migration is all year round. However, the river crossings are from September - October and the Calving season is from late January to early February.
• There are many places to watch the wildebeest migration and all the drama it draws, but we recommend the Mara River, the plains of the Masai Mara National Park, and the Ndutu Plains of Tanzania's Serengeti.
• Safari lodges have guest rooms similar to a hotel with en-suite bathrooms. They are comfortably furnished with facilities normally associated with a hotel rooms, except your rooms are normally set in beautiful wilderness settings, with nature and wildlife around.
• Tented lodges have rooms which are tents on a platform and with a roof and also have en-suite facilities with showers, flush toilets and hot water. Basically all the amenities of a hotel room, except canvas walls and roof.
• The boutique lodges and camps can be very stylish and smart in terms of design and decor, often with very spacious rooms and even going so far in some cases as having plunge pools for each room.
• Eco-camps and smaller tented camps have insect-proof tents with en-suite facilities including a safari shower and flush toilet.  They give a more authentic safari experience but the tents are comfortably furnished with proper beds and you don’t need to bring your own sleeping bag! The emphasis is usually on having excellent guides and great wildlife viewing away from the crowds. Guests often eat together and people travelling alone usually say that they found the atmosphere friendly and enjoyed meeting other like-minded travellers around the campfire in the evening or at dinner.
• The Adventure Camps are a budget option with guests bringing their own sleeping bags and towels. Accommodation is in small dome tented with a mattress on the floor. Each tent has its own nearby cubicle with a flush toilet, safari shower, and wash basin. The Adventure Camps are suitable only for those who don’t mind “real camping” and can put with some degree of “roughing it”. Apart from the accommodation in simple dome tents, the meals and the guiding are the same standards as the higher quality camps and game drives are in 4x4 safari vehicles. For those on a limited budget, the Adventure Camps are a good alternative to the big tourist lodges and minibus tours for those for whom the safari experience is more important than hotel accommodation.
• The official language in Tanzania is Swahili but there are hundreds of other local dialects.
• English is the second official language and the country's commercial language. It is also the main teaching language used for all higher education institutions.
• You will find that the majority of the people that you come in contact with are fluent in English and have a surprisingly good command of the language.
• The best time to visit Arusha National Park is from June to October, during the dry season. It is easier to spot the wildlife - since they normally gather around the waterholes, rainfall is minimal, vegetation is not too thick and mosquitos levels are reduced.
• However, when you’re visiting make sure you carry warm clothes for the morning game drives, since the early mornings of June all through August are cold.
• From November to December and March through May - the rains transform the landscape as lush, green grasses emerge and this is also the best time to witness the migratory birds.
• June to September, during the dry season. The wildlife is easier to spot - since they congregate around the water sources.
• The best time to see the wildebeest migration is in August as the herds cross the Nile crocodile-infested Mara River, crossing an international border between Kenya and Tanzania.
• The dry season months of June through to November are the best times to visit the Tarangire National Park , as most of the animals will head towards the Tarangire River to remain hydrated, providing travellers with excellent game viewing opportunities.

Can I Join a Group Safari in Tanzania?

If you are looking to keep costs low or travelling alone and you would like to visit Tanzania by joining a group tour, then yes we do that in conjunction with our partner tour operators. The safari tours that you can join however can only be the basic camping safaris that we offer as daily departures and they come in 4 Days group joining safari in Tanzania  that includes Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro or the 5 days group safari in Tanzania that also includes a visit to Lake Manyara National Park in addition.

Best time to visit Tanzania for safari

Just like most countries where you can take safari tours in africa, the best time to visit Tanzania for your safari trip is during the drier months; between January and Mid-March, and again from June to October. These are not only good months because it is drier but also the Wildebeests Migration herds are usually in the Serengeti National Park during these windows. Of course the wildebeests herds are usually present in the Serengeti National Park in April and May but those are the months when we experience the long rains so roads can be muddy but also the days can be dull out there without the usual scorching sun that is usually expected on a safari in Tanzania and Africa in general.

April / may as well as mid October to Mid December during which we get the short rains later on in the year you can still experience the best safari with few or no crowds at all in the parks but also if you want to travel in a cooler month to avoid the hot and humid Africa, then that would be the best time for you to visit Tanzania for your next Tanzania safari tour.

Serengeti Wins Africa’s Best National Park For 4th Straight Year!

The Serengeti has done it again with a recent win at the World Travel Awards hosted in Nairobi. That’s four years in a row the Serengeti has won the coveted award for ‘Best National Park in Africa’. Africa was never on our radar or bucket list, but my dad had planted the seed with my brother and mentioned it to us and the search was on! Being recently retired there was never a hesitation in saying, yes!  Not knowing anyone who had been on a safari led to our search and exploring on our own. The goal was Africa with the 4 of us in a safari truck and to be able to see what we could see!

From Beginning To End, The Africa Dream Team Delivered!

This trip was a long time in the planning. From our first contact back in 2019, our Safari consultant Dawn Anderson was encouraging, a wealth of knowledge and patient. We knew we wanted to do a safari for our 30th Wedding Anniversary in September 2022 and we knew we wanted Tanzania – the migration, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater. We also wanted a private experience so we could go at our pace and see what we wanted to see.

An African Dream Come True – And So Much More!

In 2019, we two couples started planning and booked a trip to Tanzania with ADS for 2020. Needless to say, COVID-19 had something to say about that plan! The trip was postponed twice, until this August 2022.

Who Needs Roads Where We Traveled!

When we decided to go to Africa for a Safari we spent a month looking into different companies. We literally started from scratch not knowing a thing. We decided Africa Dream Safaris was the best choice. That had to be the understatement of the year. From the initial questions, conference calls, emails and phone calls, we were constantly impressed and excited.

Our Third Safari To Tanzania With ADS!

September 2022 marked our third visit to Tanzania with Africa Dream Safari. It was our best trip yet. I am frequently asked, “If you’ve been there, haven’t you already seen it all?” My response is that since this isn’t like visiting a zoo, every trip is unique and exciting. This trip was no exception.

A Trip Of A Lifetime For Our Family!

It’s hard to put into words this trip. Africa…it has been on my bucket list forever and I knew I would make it there someday…and last week it finally happened! The best part – was that it was a total family affair in honor of our fiercely loving, fiery, Italian Mimi and her 80th trip around the sun…and what a celebration it was!! 5 families, 18 of us that included 8 adults and 10 teens made the trek to Tanzania.

The VIP Treatment At The Airport Was A Real Treat!

Our trip, of course, was spectacular. Our guide and new best friend, Ally, was wonderful and so knowledgeable, the lodges fabulous, and the wildlife sightings superb. With this being our second trip with ADS, we expected nothing short of that and it was certainly delivered. We saw all the large predators and many smaller ones, many antelope species, primates, birds and other fun and interesting wildlife.

We Had Many Amazing Photos But They Only Tell Half The Story!

My brother and I found Africa Dream Safaris through a referral, and from the moment Dawn reached out to us, we were impressed with the level of detail, knowledge, and passion that was exhibited throughout the process. This was our first safari trip, so we needed some hand holding throughout the process; Dawn and team were very patient throughout and organized a wonderful itinerary for our 10 night stay in Tanzania.

We Had Lions And Elephants Right Next To Our Vehicle!

This past May we were fortunate enough to go on a safari and we chose Africa Dream Safaris to help us. Africa Dream was the best decision! One of us is a bit of a nervous traveler, and they took care of everything – there was nothing that went wrong – if there was, we never knew as they took care of it immediately. Before our trip all our questions were answered in a timely manner, and in detail!

Overall, for our family, our safari was an unforgettable and, most likely, a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience. First of all, the world owes the people of Tanzania a dept of gratitude for conserving the Serengeti ecosystem. It is a place like no other!
