Golf Monthly Technical Editor Paul O'Hagan tests TaylorMade's Tour Preferred irons

Above, Golf Monthly Technical Editor Paul O'Hagan gives his TaylorMade Tour Preferred Irons review.

The clubs come in three models - CB, MB and MC - and were unveiled in January 2014.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB irons are an authentic muscle-back blade forged from soft, 1025 carbon steel with a classic and compact shape, a thin top line and minimal offset.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons featuree a muscle-cavity to boost the moment of inertia, creating an all-round iron product with feel, workability and stability.

The 3- 7-irons feature TaylorMade's Speed Pocket to promote increased ball speed in the lower portion of the clubface and more consistency across the entire face.

The head, top-line and sole-width of the Tour Preferred MC are all slighty larger than those on the Tour Preferred MB.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB is a complete cavity-back which combines the shape of a player's iron with the look of a blade at set-up.

The Speed Pocket in the 3- 7-irons feature micro-slots for fast ball speeds across the whole face, as well as higher launch for more distance.

TaylorMade claims the Tour Preferred CB is one of the longest player's irons it has ever created.

The heads of the short irons are compact with minimal offset, and long and middle iron heads are a touch larger with progressive offset, offering more stability and easier launch.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB, Tour Preferred MC and Tour Preferred MC come in 3-iron to pitching wedge with a satin nickel-chrome finish. All three models come with KBS Tour steel shafts and tour velvet grips.

Review: Taylormade Tour Preferred UDI

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred UDI arrived and I put it right in the bag and went straight to the range prior to my round.  I teed up a ball and smacked it perfectly straight around 200 yards.  I was shocked that I even made decent contact, but then to see it laser down the range was even more impressive.  I did this about 10 more times only to confirm that it was for real.  On the course I didn’t hit it for every tee-shot, but each time I did, I hit laser shots right down the middle of the fairway landing around 200 yards and rolling out around 20-40 yards depending on the hole.  The conditions were very firm for the first round.  The second round was on a much more lush course and the ball didn’t roll out much at all, even with the lowish launch and low spin.  I don’t think I topped 220 that day, even though every ball was in the fairway.

The same technology that made the Tour Preferred MC irons so forgiving and consistent is the same tech used in the UDI.  The speed pocket creates forgiveness across the entire face and especially on low shots to really keep the ball moving.  I was impressed by how easy this club actually was to hit.  It played more like a 7-iron than a 1-iron.  The stock KBS C-taper lite is a great compliment to the head.  It doesn’t launch extremely low, I can get it off the ground, but is is much lower than any other club I have in the bag.  I could vary the height of shots off the tee, but the height of the tee; the lower the tee, the lower the flight.

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

The real question I was left with is; Where does it fit in my bag? and What stays or what goes?  I already have 14 clubs in my bag so which one gets swapped out?  I replaced my hybrid with this club as it seemed like a similar club.  I think for some rounds that was a great move and for others not so much.  Our weather here in MN has been up and down.  It was really wet and soft early but now is drying out and getting rather firm.  Regardless of the course conditions this thing found fairways.  Tight holes, short holes or when I didn’t feel comfortable with the driver, the UDI would smack the ball right down the middle every time.  Ranging from 200 to 250 depending on conditions. If I lived in TX or “across the pond” this club would never leave my bag.  It is amazing on firm turf and in windy conditions.  I loved being able to laser out a drive 225yards into the wind or bounce one low down the fairway even further is huge.  It was all about keeping the ball in play and the UDI is one of the most accurate clubs I’ve hit off the tee.  It is kind of what you’d hope as you make progressing going from driver to 3-wood to driving iron, the dispersion just gets tighter each move.  In moderate wind and wet conditions I felt like I was giving up too much carry.  I felt like I maxed out the carry around 200 yards and with no roll out that just isn’t enough on most holes to feel comfortable attacking the pin. While it is called a driving iron, it can be hit off the fairway and even out of the rough.  I could really go after it from the fairway and hit long runners up the fairway.  Out of the rough it isn’t as easy as a hybrid, but if you just want to chase a low runner under a tree it can be very useful for that too.  I didn’t find it ideal for long par 3s because the run out was too hard to judge.

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

The TaylorMade UDI driving iron is a niche club.  It isn’t going to be for everyone, not because they can’t hit this 1-iron, since it is easy to hit, but because it may not be necessary.  Florida golfers might not find it useful, while Texas golfers should get one now.  I’ll be taking it in and out of my bag as conditions warrant here in Minnesota.

Even though the saying is that God can’t hit a 1-iron, the TaylorMade UDI 1-iron can probably be hit well by most golfers.  They just have to decided how and where it fits into their bag and their golfing needs.  It is straight, accurate, easy to hit and ideal for “links” golf.

TaylorMade releases Tour Preferred UDI (Ultimate Driving iron)

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

TaylorMade’s new Tour Preferred UDI (Ultimate Driving Irons) are low-lofted, hollow-bodied long irons designed to launch the ball higher and with more ball speed than traditional long irons.

“We designed the Tour Preferred UDI for players seeking a club that delivers incredible distance off the tee and a high-performance alternative from the fairway,” said Tomo Bystedt, TaylorMade’s Director of Iron Creation. “The clean, traditional look at address inspires confidence and the SpeedPocket technology provides amazing distance and consistency.”

TaylorMade achieved this performance by moving weight lower and more forward in the club head, which produces a higher launch angle with lower spin. The driving iron’s hollow body is made from 450 stainless steel, while its clubface is made from stronger, thinner 455 Carpenter Steel that helps the club produce faster ball speeds.

39dcabc68456bd617f0917cbcb6bf486

TaylorMade’s Speed Pocket, a 3-millimeter slot in the sole of the iron, is said to allow the face to flex more efficiently for distance and consistency and further encourage high launch characteristics in the UDI. It’s the same pocket that’s used in the company’s SpeedBlade irons , which are some of the longest-flying irons in golf.

Although the UDI’s look similar to TaylorMade’s Tour Preferred MC irons, they have thicker toplines and lower face profiles that better suit the design of driving irons.

ff082270375510130aee3df4ff27d960

The UDI’s are available in three models: a 1 iron (16 degrees), 2 iron (19 degrees) and 3 iron (20 degrees), and will carry an MSRP of $199. A KBS C-Taper Lite shaft comes stock in the driving irons, which the company says also promotes a mid-to-high trajectory and controlled spin.

TaylorMade staffer Justin Rose had a UDI 3 iron (20 degrees) in his bag during his wins at both the Quicken Loans National and the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open last week.

See the rest of Rose’s Winning WITB here.

Rose is expected to have a UDI in play this week at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England for the Open Championship, and TaylorMade expects other golfers to put the club in play as well.

I can’t hit a hybrid to save my life I am a struggling 5 HC (my low is a +4 when I played competitive as an amateur after a short pro career as a point of reference) and this Udi is the best / most versatile / easy to hit club I have ever owned I have miura lh prototype baby tournament blades and honestly the 2 iron Udi is easier to hit than my six iron! It flies much higher than I expected and I have verified that it can be bent by 2.5 degrees on a Mitchell press even though it is cast. Since I am a stinky lefty with no endorsements anymore I had to “adjust” my 2 iron to replace an old driving iron so for people wondering I was able to re shaft it with a kbs c taper s+ firm tip 41″ and adjust the lie to down -1 also adjusting loft by 2.5 degree strong (which is max) I now have a club that is about 10 yards shorter than a perfectly struck 3 wood with a much better workability and forgiveness factor. I am actually considering pulling my 3 wood and buying another 2 iron (although that may get confusing as I will have two identical looking clubs in the bag after swapping out shafts maybe paintfill or something to represent which one is the one iron lol). This club flies about as high as my 4 iron without ballooning and rolls for days. It has a carry for me with this setup of about 225 with a total distance of around 250 verified on trackman. I wish TM made a club labelled with a 1 and a 3 for the lefty player but once again us lefties get no love! My three wood maxes out from the deck at around 260 on a well struck ball. Hope this information answered any questions about this club oh yeah it is also very easy to flight in the wind which is something hybrids just can not accommodate!

Cmon…. $200 for a thicker mc iron….you can buy single irons for $100….why are these utility irons so much….I’ll stick to my fli hi which started all this buzz anyway

Just received this information from TM support: “The 2 and 1 UDI are going to be 18 and 16 degree lofts. They are going to have a higher trajectory than the Rocketbladez Tour irons. The UDI will be a longer 2 iron than the Rocketbladez Tour. It is built with driver DNA.”

Not to be a nark but I think there’s a typo in the story. The 2 iron is 18 degrees, not 19. It even says so on the hosel in one of the photo’s.

Jake, Like yourself I am an iron guy to. I say get the 2 iron, if you end up needing more yards, have it bent a degree or so. Since the club is forged, this is an easy fix.

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Jul 15, 2014 at 3:51 am

It’s CAST. Not forged.

Jul 15, 2014 at 10:40 am

Are you able to bend cast, just not as easy as forged?

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Jul 15, 2014 at 11:53 am

You can bend most cast, just be careful. Or just put a heavier shaft in it, in my mind its pointless to make a 2 iron with a 110 gram shaft. Toss a S400 in there and let it hit the ground early.

Are these going to be a limited release or a general release. I’d really like to get my hands on the 1 iron.

It’a General Release on 8/1/14.

If you want to buy a driving iron with basically the same technology go to hireko.com and order their new Dynacraft Driving Irons. They have 3 lofts to choose from. I use their 18 degree model and it is flat out hot and straight off the tee for those short par 4’s . Plus it is 3-4 times cheaper and you can have it built with the shaft and grips you want.

I currently play the rocketbladez tour 19* 3-iron. I’m looking for a club to fill between my driver and 3-iron and saw these come in 19* 2 iron and 16* 1-iron. Would it be redundant to get the 2-iron or is this a lower trajectory driving iron?

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Jul 14, 2014 at 3:25 pm

It states both head slot technology and shaft helps to launch the ball high.

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Jul 14, 2014 at 4:38 pm

How about a 3 wood.

Jul 14, 2014 at 4:56 pm

Appreciate the snarky comment. Havent used a 3 wood in years. I like the feel of irons. Do you have suggestion of a different (non-driving iron) 2 iron to help fill gap? What is the point of a high trajectory 2 iron?

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Jul 14, 2014 at 5:30 pm

I play a fli hi 3 iron right now but will be getting one of these when they’re released. The purpose, I think, of the high(er) launching 2 iron is to be more versatile from the tee AND the fairway during long approach shots. While this iron is supposed to launch higher than the MC line, I’ve read that it spins less than a normal iron leading me to believe it will still have a piercing flight even if it is high. As for your first question…if it were me, I would get the 2 iron and see what kind of yardage gap I had. Then I would adjust the loft to whatever I needed. The hollow design and new speed pocket may help you eek out a couple more yards and still have a landing angle that could help you hold a green if needed. Good luck!

Jul 14, 2014 at 6:44 pm

can’t beat Adams hybrids, got two in my bag. Try one of their tour models in a real strong loft.

Jeff Trigger

Jul 14, 2014 at 6:58 pm

TM’s thing is high launch, low spin. I guess this is the Tour Preferred UDI featuring SLDR technology. I doubt these launch that high, just higher than the low ball hitting TP irons.

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Zak Kozuchowski

Jul 14, 2014 at 7:57 pm

Our testing found that the 2014 Tour Preferred CB irons were actually pretty high-launching for their size. I wouldn’t call the Tour Preferred MC irons low-launching, either.

Welcome to New Orleans, where TPC Louisiana plays host to the 2024 Zurich Classic. In between breakfast beignets and nightly Creole feasts, PGA Tour players are also competing in the unique two-man format at the Zurich this week.

Although the vibes in Nawlins are a bit lighter-fare than the recent back-to-back competitions the Masters and the RBC Heritage signature event), the gear news was no less serious this week.

We spotted some recent changes from Rory McIlroy, a very rare Odyssey Backstryke putter, dove into the bag of legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and spotted Patrick Cantlay continuing to test new equipment.

Get your beads out and crack your crawfish, because it’s time for an equipment rundown from The Big Easy (meaning New Orleans, of course, not Ernie Els).

Rory’s on-and-off lob wedge

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Since the end of 2023, Rory McIlroy has had an on-again, off-again relationship with a Titleist Vokey K-Grind lob wedge. In his last start, it was on, and the wedge is back in the bag again this week. We got a great look at the complicated grind that McIlroy uses.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by GolfWRX (@golfwrx)

A full look into McIlroy’s bag above also shows that he switched out of the TaylorMade BRNR Mini Copper that he used at the RBC Heritage, and he’s back into the Qi10 core 3-wood. As we discussed last week , McIlroy will likely keep the BRNR around as a course-specific club, trading it in and out for the 3-wood.

See Rory McIlroy’s full 2024 WITB from the Zurich here

Turning Back the clock

Unless Tommy Gainey is in the field, it’s unlikely you’ll ever see Odyssey’s Backstryke technology make an appearance on the PGA Tour.

But then, when you least expect it, Russ Cochran shows up.

For more than a decade – since the 2013 Sony Open in Hawai’i – Cochran has been stuck on 599 PGA Tour starts. This week will be his 600th.

Cochran is in the field at the Zurich this week playing alongside Eric Cole, whose regular caddie is Reed Cochran, Russ’s son.

The Backstryke putter was first released back in 2010, and its unique design helps shift the axis point of the putter closer to the CG of the head. And, the putter is getting a nod this week at the Zurich Classic, thanks to Cochran’s 600th career PGA Tour start.

The putter is certainly awesome, but don’t forget to check out Cochran’s full WITB  from this week.

Drew Brees with a Super Bowl winning Scotty Cameron putter

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Drew Brees, a legendary retired quarterback for the hometown New Orleans Saints, made an appearance at the Zurich’s Wednesday Pro-Am, playing alongside Zach Johnson, Ryan Palmer, and current Saints QB Derek Carr.

Brees’ bag included a TaylorMade Stealth2 Plus driver, a BRNR Mini 13.5-degree, a Stealth 5-wood, a mixed set of P-790 and P-760 irons, Milled Grind Hi-Toe wedges, and a custom Scotty Cameron “New Orleans Saints” putter, which Scotty made for Brees following his Super Bowl MVP-winning performance in 2010.

It should also be noted that Brees has his Venmo QR code as a bag tag.

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

If you’re gambling with Brees on the course, just know that not having cash won’t work as an excuse.

Stricker’s unrecognizable putter

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Steve Stricker has made numerous upgrades to his bag recently, including a new TSR3 driver and T100 irons, but his longtime Odyssey White Hot No. 2 putter is still going strong. It’s the most recognizable unrecognizable putter ever.

Here’s a better look at Stricker’s flatstick, which he started using back in 2007 .

Patrick Cantlay has opened the equipment-switching floodgates

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Over on the PGA Tour’s Equipment Report this week , we covered Cantlay’s recent switch into Ping Blueprint S irons, and a Titleist TSR2 driver.

Cantlay hadn’t switched irons for about seven years, so the iron switch he made at The 2024 Masters came as a shock to the norm. He simply isn’t one to change gear very often, so anytime Cantlay makes a switch, it’s news.

It seems the floodgates of equipment testing have opened up a bit for Cantlay, who was also spotted testing a custom Scotty Cameron blade putter on Tuesday this week. By Wednesday, Cantlay was back practicing with his familiar Scotty Cameron T5 Proto mallet, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on going forward.

Daniel Berger’s custom Jailbird site lines

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Berger, who’s currently using Odyssey’s Ai-One Mini Jailbird mallet putter, has a unique 3-dot, 2-line alignment on the crown of his navy-white-navy-white mallet putter. Looking down at the putter, it’s easy to see why this alignment system would help; it just seems impossible to set up to the ball off-center, or misaligned to the target.

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Also, for anyone worried, you can rest easy. Yes, he’s still playing the 2013 TaylorMade TP MC irons, which we highlighted in our recent “ Modern Classics: Old vs. New ” video testing series.

FitzMagic teams back up

taylormade tour preferred driving iron

Brothers Matthew and Alex Fitzpatrick are teaming up once again at the Zurich this year, and Bettinardi Golf hooked them up with some festive “FitzMagic” headcovers to match this week.

See what else is in Alex Fitzpatrick’s WITB here

And, with that, we say goodbye to the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Don’t forget to check out all of our photos from this week, including 30 unique photo galleries full of equipment photos.

We’ll see you next week in Texas for the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson!

TaylorMade Introduces Tour Preferred Ultimate Driving Iron

Earlier this year TaylorMade Golf Company introduced the SLDR Mini Driver , a club designed for use off the tee that is incredibly accurate and longer off the tee than a 3-wood. Now, the makers of the No. 1 driver in golf are featuring a club designed to deliver incredible distance on tee shots and performance never before seen in a long iron. Introducing the Tour Preferred UDI (Ultimate Driving Iron).

tm-udi1

“We designed the Tour Preferred UDI for players seeking a versatile club that delivers incredible distance off the tee and a high-performance alternative from the fairway,” said TaylorMade’s Director of Iron Creation, Tomo Bystedt. “The clean, traditional look at address inspires confidence and the Speed Pocket technology provides amazing distance and consistency.”

A poster boy for distance and consistency, TaylorMade Tour Staff Professional Justin Rose, has played the UDI beautifully in his two recent wins (Quicken Loans National at Congressional and the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open) and is a favorite at Royal Liverpool this week.

Like Rose, TaylorMade Tour Staff Professionals expressed a specific desire for a club that combines distance and playability with accuracy and shot shaping capabilities. Enter UDI: The hollow construction allowed engineers to move weight lower and more forward, resulting in faster ball speeds and a higher launch angle than traditional driving irons. By increasing the launch angle, TaylorMade engineers have effectively made driving irons more playable than past models – making it easier to hit high towering shots with low lofted irons.

A 455 Carpenter Steel material, which generates more pronounced ball speed, along with milled score lines across the face also gives golfers tremendous control with the UDI – allowing them to flight shots lower and manipulate trajectory if they choose to. The lightweight KBS C-Taper Lite shaft comes stock in the UDI. The shaft promotes a mid to high trajectory and controlled spin.

tm-udi3

Available in 1-iron (16°), 2-iron (18°) and 3-iron (20°) options, the UDI features TaylorMade’s renowned Speed Pocket Technology. This tour-proven technology allows the face to flex more efficiently for better distance and greater consistency. In addition, this key design element is instrumental to creating the high launch conditions golfers experience with UDI. Other features include an advanced sound dampening system for a soft feel and a crisp sound that appeals to better players.

UDI was first introduced on the PGA Tour during the Quicken Loans National at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, where eventual champion Justin Rose elected to put the UDI in the bag. Firm and fast course conditions, which rivaled those of the 2010 U.S. Open at Congressional, made UDI a popular choice off the tee for Rose. TaylorMade is anticipating more golfers to put the UDI in play this week at the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

With an MSR of $199, the UDI will be available at retail on July 14, 2014. For more information, please go to taylormadegolf.com .

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons Review

More in irons:.

new level 480-mc irons

50 Words or Less

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB is the best looking TaylorMade iron in quite some time.  True blade.  Players only.

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (3)

Introduction

Nothing generates more interest amongst the golf freaks than the release of a new TaylorMade Tour Preferred iron.  Needless to say, the announcement of the 2014 TaylorMade Tour Preferred Muscle Back (MB) irons had all of the avid TaylorMade fans drooling and dying to get their hands around the grips.  Like everyone else, we at PluggedInGolf.com were curious and wanted to see how the new Tour Preferred MB’s would stack up to the rest of the clubs of the season.

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (10)

The new TaylorMade TP MB’s are a pure blade and look every bit of it.  They have brushed chrome finish with  nice thin topline and sole.  If you’re looking for that player’s club appearance, this is club is every bit of that.  It has a very minimal basic look and is certainly a sharp looking golf club .

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (15)

Sound & Feel

At first strike of a golf ball, I immediately noticed the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB’s had a very signature “old school” whack that some of us may remember from blades made pre-1996.  The sound of these irons helps the TP MB’s maintain that classic traditional theme consistent with their looks.

The feel on the Tour Preferred MB is a little bit firmer than I would expect from a modern day forged carbon blades.  This leads to a fairly responsive club, but a bit more sting on mishits.  That said, the sweet spot is not pea sized – there’s a good hitting area on the face of the club.  Still, you better be precise with the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB’s because heel and toe shots are going to haunt you.

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (1)

Performance

Compared to my current set of irons, I actually lost a little bit of distance with the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB’s and had a little bit of a higher launch as well.  This may be from the stock KBS Tour shafts that I am generally not too comfortable with.  The KBS shafts and I have just never gotten along well.  The TP MB’s are still very easy to manipulate your shot shapes with and perform the way you’d expect a true classic blade to perform .

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons (5)

Classic blade irons are not for the golfer that is faint of heart.  These TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB’s are arguably my favorite TaylorMade irons since 2009 and are a nice throwback to a traditional blade that has been rare from the major manufacturers in recent years.  The TP MB’s are a tough, unforgiving animal, but if you are a big TaylorMade fan and have the cash and game to contain the beast, these clubs are going to be something that you will want to check out this season.

Very good club taylormade Forged mb irons. Should just keep improving these clubs . They look great.??

' src=

They were one of the better looking clubs TM has made in a long time. I have to say, once the honeymoon wore off, I was pretty unhappy with these irons. Felt like the true mass-produced quality kind of came through. That said, I have hit other people’s sets of these and they have been better.

' src=

Way to firm does not feel forged the 2011 taylormade mb are amazingly soft 2014 mb is hard not a fan

Proof that feel is subjective. I thought the 2011 felt awful and these felt way better. I will verify that the P730 blows them both out of the water.

' src=

I still play the original tour preferred irons from ’84, which replaced the Apex I I’s I played for 4 yrs before that. I hadn’t tried a newer iron until last month when I tried both new 730’s and 790’s. Frankly, I was surprised they looked as nice and bladelike as they did, but I didnt like the feel of either of them at all. Dead and almost mushy by comparison to my true blades. I was hitting them 8 -10 yds longer, but they are 2-3 degrees stronger which figures. Probably great for mid- handicappers, but not remotely a “player’s” iron if you ask me.

' src=

Best forged blade I ever hit! I also gamed Titleist 681, Mizuno MP 29 irons. That should say a lot about these Taylormade Tour MB Irons 2014 version. I ordered a second set of tour issue heads on eBay from a very well known eBay seller. These will be my back up set when I retire! I’m a blade man all the way! Only way to play!

' src=

Hello Bill, Your advise would be appreciated. I am making a sort of “comeback” at the age of 64 after playing a lot of golf and reaching a National handicap of 3.7 as a 52 year old…..stopped playing due to no left shoulder cartilage ( right hander) My game relied upon a long drive and short iron being a 6’3″, I possessed a good quantity of power being an ex-rugby man. Today I am trying to organize a “half swing knock down” technique using light clubs and Regular shafts. Question – What Irons would you recommend I should contemplate for this “swing”? Thanks in Advance.

' src=

Bill no longer writes for Plugged In Golf, but I am happy to answer your question.

I would strongly advise that you get a fitting with a quality club fitter like Club Champion. They can look at the swing you want to make, advise you on models to try, and you can actually hit those exact combinations to see how they perform before buying them. Going the route of “Buy, try, repeat” gets frustrating and expensive very quickly.

Thank you Matt.

What is the difference between these 2 Moscow metro tours on the same tour group page? One is less expensive than the other but both have positive reviews.
