The Killers' Brandon Flowers describes band line-up as "revolving door"

The Killers' Brandon Flowers The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon - Season 9

The Mr. Brightside rocker has talked about making his band work in a "unique way" at this time in their careers.

Listen to this article

Brandon Flowers has talked about The Killers' line-up being somewhat of a "revolving door".

The Mr. Brightside frontman and the band's drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. have always remained permanent fixtures of the band, but Dave Keuning took a hiatus from the band while Mark Stoermer also took a break from touring in 2016.

Talking to The Sun, Flowers explained: "Dave’s been playing most of the gigs this year which has been great. It’s sort of a revolving door situation, which is, so far, so good. We were able to get our schedules to align and do what we could do.

"When you’re first in the band nobody has anything tying them down and you become a gang. Then people start having families and moving to different states and it gets difficult. But I think we’re making it work in a unique way."

Keuning cited wanting to spend more time with his family for his break as well as releasing his 2021 solo album A Mild Case Of Everything, which followed on from 2019's Prismism.

Stoermer also used his break to release his second solo album Dark Arts in 2016 and Filthy Apes and Lions in 2017.

Though Brandon Flowers and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. have both been mainstays of the band, they've both had solo projects, with Flowers releasing Flamingo in 2010 and The Desired Effect in 2015, while the drummer has released two albums from his side project Big Talk in 2011 and Straight In No Kissin' in 2015.

The Killers Kick Off 2022 Tour - Set List Revealed for Hometown Show in Vegas!

The Killers gave their hometown crowd a special treat to kick off their first tour in years!

The band, led by lead singer Brandon Flowers , opened their 2022 tour with a show at The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan on Friday (April 15) in Las Vegas.

The show was filled with music from their two latest albums, Imploding the Mirage and Pressure Machine , as well as their greatest hits like “Mr. Brightside” and “When We Were Young.” The crowd brought so much energy to The Chelsea that the floors were quite literally bouncing up and down throughout the entire evening.

“A lot of people talk about, during COVID it sort of helped them focus on what’s important in their life. And I think a lot of people whittled that down to the fact that it was people close to them and their family that was close to them. We found this to be true ourselves. But we have another family we have been missing. And it means a lot for us to play these songs for you again,” Brandon told the crowd.

After three shows in Vegas this weekend, The Killers will be touring Mexico and Europe through July. They’ll return for a full North American tour in August!

The Killers Announce Character-Driven ‘Pressure Machine’ Album, 2022 Tour Dates

"Write what you know" is a common axiom among songwriters and it's an idea that singer Brandon Flowers took to heart with a character-driven new Killers album entitled Pressure Machine that is now set to arrive on Aug. 13.

The band's newly-announced seventh studio album follows closely on the heels of their 2020 release Imploding the Mirage and was born out of the pandemic-induced downtime of the past year with Flowers looking to his past for inspiration.

The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett, and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album Imploding The Mirage .

“Everything came to this grinding halt, and it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence," says Flowers. "And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”

Having time away from the concert and album cycle, Flowers started to reflect on the idea of the small American town, with his own home base of Nephi, Utah from his youth helping to color some of the material. “Had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the 90s could have been the 1950s,” says Flowers.

“We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.”

Flowers adds, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with, many memories of my time in Nephi are tender. But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged. I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.” The singer discusses more about the idea for the album in this trailer for Apple Music .

Digging into his past centric to a small town in the U.S. southwest, the vocalist wrote all the lyrics for the songs before a note was even recorded for the album. Pressure Machine is told not only from his perspective but also some characters of the lives he watched in his hometown as a teenager.

Helping to put listeners in the right frame of mind, Pressure Machine 's album art also features a highway shot just outside of Nephi taken by photographer Wes Johnson, with additional photos featured within the album packaging. Due Aug. 13, Pressure Machine is now available to pre-order here .

Tour dates and stops are listed below with tickets going on sale this Friday (July 23) at 10AM local time via the band's website .

‘Pressure Machine’ arrives in August

the killers 2022 tour band members

[Updated: August 13]

The Killers have announced their seventh studio album Pressure Machine . The LP is due out on August 13 via Island Records. The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett, and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album  Imploding The Mirage , released last year.

The band has also announced a 2022 tour to support the album, and their previous release that never got to be celebrated live. The North American trek kicks off on August 19 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC and will see thebans perform in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Miami, and more. The Killers will be accompanied by very special guest Johnny Marr .

Tickets for these shows go on sale on Friday, July 23, at 10am local time HERE .

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the promotional run and worldwide tour for The Killers’ majestic, critically-acclaimed 2020 album  Imploding the Mirage , “Everything came to this grinding halt,” says frontman Brandon Flowers. “And it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence. And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”

Indeed, for the first time since 2004, the relentless momentum and pressures of being in a globally-renowned, stadium-shaking band stopped. Enter  Pressure Machine : a view into the everyday realities of a small American town with a stark, tough beauty, and The Killers’ most restrained and resonant album yet.

A video from Brandon about  Pressure Machine  can be seen now via Apple Music. Click  HERE  to watch it.

A quieter, character-study-driven album,  Pressure Machine  lives squarely in Flowers’ hometown of Nephi, Utah, a close-knit community of 5,300 people with no traffic lights, a rubber plant, wheat fields, and the West Hills. Nephi is the place Flowers spent his formative years (10-16), saying, “Had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the 90s could have been the 1950s.”

The album’s songs are based on the memories and stories of people that impacted him growing up, interspersed with commentary from current Nephi locals about their town.

“We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.”

Concurs Flowers, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” he says, “many memories of my time in Nephi are tender.  But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged. I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”

The resulting record is an aural document of growing up – and living – in the American Southwest, told from a myriad of perspectives.  For the first time in his life, Flowers had complete lyrics before a note of music was put to tape. No stranger to inhabiting different characters in songs, on  Pressure Machine  he steps into the shoes of some of the people whose lives he watched unfold as a teen. The album weaves the threads of Flowers’ signature lyricism throughout his career into a perfect whole culminating in the most elegant album The Killers have ever made.

Through its characters and also its title, the album squares up to the unbending pressure of the American dream compounded by religious disenchantment. A born optimist, moments of beauty inevitably shine out of the grief of Flowers’s songs:  the healing arrival of summer, the first crop of hay, sweeter skies.  Pressure Machine’s  stories detail the real life personal battles, overwhelming regrets, local tragedies, and the opioid epidemic that hit Flowers’ hometown, as well as every hometown in America. Flowers sings about the choices people make, for better and for worse, and the consequences of those choices; the ones who were left behind, and the ones that can’t be forgotten.

Pressure Machine’s  album cover image was shot on the highway just outside Nephi, taken as photographer Wes Johnson passed a roadside inspirational display set up by a local Baptist church. Johnson took dozens of incredible images of Flowers’ hometown throughout the early part of 2021, many of which are featured in the album’s packaging for the physical edition.

The Killers’ Guide To Las Vegas

Ana de la Cámara

The Killers are true Las Vegans through and through!

The band was first formed in 2001 with lead singer Brandon Flowers and guitarist Dave Keuning. They went through several early lineup changes, but by 2002 the band had settled on a lineup of Brandon Flowers , Dave Keuning , Mark Stoermer , and Ronnie Vannucci Jr . Fans of the band easily recognize the Vegas references in their lyrics and music videos, and it might be a fun game to spot all their Vegas easter eggs!

View this post on Instagram

The Killers have given us amazing hits like Mr. Brightside, All These Things That I’ve Done, When You Were Young, Somebody Told Me , and recently, The Man . They had a tour scheduled for 2020. However, because of the pandemic, those plans were put on hold… until now! The iconic band will start an epic 2022 world tour , and we couldn’t be more excited! The Vegas natives will perform at T-Mobile Arena on August 26 ! In honor of them, we decided to put together a guide to Sin City. A guide of spots band members frequent and places they’ve referenced in their work. This is The Killers’ guide to Las Vegas, baby!

Sam’s Town

Long-time fans of The Killers will instantly recognize the name of this casino. Sam’s Town Hotel & Gambling Hall opened back in 1979 and was Vegas’ first locals casino. It features a 25,000-square-foot indoor park, bowling center, movie theater and has one of the largest casino floors in the whole city! The Killers named their second album Sam’s Town (2006) after the hotel and casino. If you are a fan of their music, you must take a picture in front of the hotel’s ‘old west’-style sign! While you’re there, don’t miss the colorful laser water show.

Location: 5111 Boulder Hwy, Las Vegas, NV 89122

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

Hard Rock has deep ties with the music world, and The Killers are no exception. Among Hard Rock’s rich musical memorabilia is the “Bones” display. It comprises four skeletons in full rock star gear circa the Tim Burton-directed 2006 music video. You’ll also find the Sam’s Town Tour sign on the wall!

Location: Location: 4455 Paradise Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89169

Gold Coast Hotel & Casino

The Gold Coast has an important place in The Killers’ history. Before the band was the international phenomenon it is today Brandon Flowers was a young bellhop there until the band was signed. Brandon has recounted some crazy stories of his time at the Gold Coast Hotel!

Location: 3799 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89109

Flamingo Hotel

Flamingo Hotel is another classic Las Vegas spot. Their GO Pool is a fantastic place to party the day away. Their instantly recognizable flamingo pink parasols and bright green palm trees give it its ideal tropical vibes. Brandon Flower’s solo album is named after this iconic Vegas institution.

Location: 3555 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89109

Binion’s Gambling Hall

Binion’s Gambling Hall is one of the oldest casinos in town. It opened back in 1951 and was run by the Binion family until 2004. The Killers’ drummer Ronnie Vannucci had a Rolling Stone interview at the casino’s Snack Bar. Ronnie said, “I like this place because it’s real old school. My parents have been coming here forever. I just had a grilled cheese and cornbread for $3.75. That’s a reasonable price, man.” Vannucci later talked about a hidden staircase leading to a secret poker room, “for true poker players, this is still the place.”

Location: 128 Fremont St, Las Vegas, NV 89101

The Palms Casino may be temporarily closed, but when it opens back up, this is a must-visit spot for fans of Sam’s Town. The Killers recorded their second album here and were the first band to record in this studio!

Location: 4321 W Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89103

Where To Eat

La chapala’s.

the killers 2022 tour band members

This friendly Mexican restaurant is a family-run business serving up an extensive selection of dishes as well as drinks. Brandon Flowers frequents this spot and when you go you’re sure to enjoy the great food and friendly service.

Location: 3331 E Tropicana Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89121

Metro Pizza

Metro Pizza is a casual local Italian chain with delicious and comforting pizzas, subs, wings, and more. During a 2005 interview with Spin Magazine, The Killers stopped here and gushed over the one-and-only nuclear fries!

Location: 1395 E Tropicana Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89119

L’Atelier

The L’Atelier at the MGM is a gourmet French tapas, perfect for a special evening out. This hot spot has become a favorite of founding band member Dave Keuning. He particularly loves the cocktails, like their mojitos.

Location: 4000 West Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89103

In an interview for Nylon Magazine, Mark Stoermer, The Killers’ bassist, said Los Tacos was one of his favorite Mexican restaurants in Vegas. Stoermer said, “It’s so authentic… It reminds me of the taquerias in San Francisco and Los Angeles.”

Location: 1710 E Charleston Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89104

The Peppermill Restaurant

The Peppermill is a must-see old-school Vegas establishment. It has been around since 1972 and serves as a reminder of how the Vegas Strip used to look. The Peppermill is an all-night restaurant with all the peculiar charm Killer fans tend to love. Bandmates Keuning and Flowers frequent this spot, so if you’re hoping to bump into them, this is a great spot to try!

Location: 2985 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109

Sushi Roku is one of the best sushi spots in all of Vegas! The L.A native Sushi Roku has charmed both locals and tourists with its delicious Japanese cuisine. Brandon Flowers has been spotted at this eatery multiple times and it’s no wonder since their food is so delicious.

Location: 3500 Las Vegas Blvd S, Ste T18, Las Vegas, NV 89109

Luv It Frozen Custard

This iconic Las Vegas spot is a staple for good reason. They have served up delicious old-style custard since 1973, selling shakes, cones, malts, and more, which the locals just love! In the 2005 Spin Magazine interview, Brandon Flowers even called it “the best-frozen custard in Vegas!”

Location: 505 E Oakey Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89104

Champagne’s Cafe

This dark and atmospheric spot draws a unique crowd from different Vegas scenes. You’ll immediately notice its red-velvet wallpaper and velvet crushed chairs. It’s a great spot for karaoke and video poker and a fabulous reminder of a bygone era. In a Nylon interview, Mark Stoermer said, “It’s just a little room, a dive bar, a place to go late night, but it’s a real taste of old Vegas! You know, red leather seats, dark fuzzy wallpaper. Some gangster movie was filmed there; it’s very Casino-esque. And they have cheap drinks.”

Location: 3557 Maryland Pkway, 702.737.1699

Much like Anthony Bourdain, The Killers frequented this bar back in the early 2000s. Back then, you could get a beauty treatment while enjoying a fabulous cocktail. In a 2005 interview, bassist Mark Stoermer said the spot gave them hope since it was a real locals place that “doesn’t only play techno club music.” Sadly, the Beauty Bar closed down in 2019.

Location: Location: 517 Fremont St, Las Vegas, NV 89101

Chapel of the Flowers

If you’re a die-hard Killers fan and are looking to get hitched, there’s no better place than the legendary Little Chapel of the Flowers. Drummer Ronnie Vannucci was working as a wedding photographer at this chapel when he joined the band and recorded the band’s 2004 debut studio Hot Fuss.

Location: 1717 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89104

Other Spots

The neon museum.

Another quintessential Vegas spot is the Neon Museum. The band filmed their All These Things That I’ve Done music video there. The band has also shot many photoshoots there.

Location: 770 Las Vegas Blvd N, Las Vegas, NV 89101

Drive Around The Desert

Perhaps the best way to enjoy Vegas like The Killers is to drive around the desert with your windows down while listening to Crossfire, This River is Wild, Bling, or our favorite Joy Ride! Bonus points if you pick up a blinged-out cowboy hat! You can actually drive to where their iconic Spaceman video was filmed and daydream about joining the band.

A video from Brandon about Pressure Machine can be seen now via Apple Music.  Click HERE to watch it.

A quieter, character-study-driven album, Pressure Machine lives squarely in Flowers’ hometown of Nephi, Utah, a close-knit community of 5300 people with no traffic lights, a rubber plant, wheat fields, and the West Hills.  Nephi is the place Flowers spent his formative years (10-16), saying “ had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the 90s could have been the 1950s .”  The album’s songs are based on the memories and stories of people that impacted him growing up, interspersed with commentary from current Nephi locals about their town.  “ We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr . “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.”  Concurs Flowers, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” he says, “many memories of my time in Nephi are tender.  But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged.  I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”

The resulting record is an aural document of growing up - and living - in the American Southwest, told from a myriad of perspectives.

A born optimist, moments of beauty inevitably shine out of the grief of Flowers's songs:  the healing arrival of summer, the first crop of hay, sweeter skies.

The Killers Review – Las Vegas Stars Bring World Tour to a Stunning Close in Sydney

By David James Young

The Killers performed at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena – and Liberty Hall – on Monday, 19th December. David James Young reviews.

Within minutes of The Killers arriving on stage at Qudos Bank Arena, confetti exploded from a row of cannons placed near the barricade. It wasn’t for one of the band’s signature hits (rather, 2020’s ‘My Own Soul’s Warning’), nor for a crucial moment in the song itself. Truly, it was a muscle flex – an indulgent, confident move executed purely because they could.

As Brandon Flowers ran from one side of the stage to the other, rallying seventeen-thousand devotees with a blend of preacher man conviction and Las Vegas razzle-dazzle, one thing was abundantly clear: this was not The Killers’ first rodeo.

The Killers – ‘My Own Soul’s Warning’

Since rising to arena status on the back of 2006’s multi-platinum Sam’s Town , The Killers have cemented their place atop the contemporary rock totem pole. There’s always a risk of an artist’s performances becoming formulaic as a result of playing the same set-list of songs in similar venues every night. So, how do The Killers continue to make each show feel vital? Consider the three Cs: catalogue, creativity and catharsis.

To the first point: after opening with ‘My Own Soul’s Warning’, The Killers came through with a hat-trick of 2000s indie classics, ‘When You Were Young’, ‘Jenny Was a Friend of Mine’ and ‘Smile Like You Mean It’. Considering how dated many singles from that era sound in 2022, it’s to The Killers’ credit that their hits have survived in this way.

Songs like the electric ‘Caution’ and the pensive ‘Pressure Machine’ demonstrated that the band still have plenty in the tank artistically. Even when it seems like you’ve done it all, you have to go back out there with something to prove – and The Killers, evidently, are in it for the long haul.

The Killers

To the second point: even when you have so many adored songs at your disposal, you still need to present them in a way that is fresh and serves as a point of difference to the studio version.

The powerhouse work of drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. – the engine room of the band – often dictated the ebb and flow of the live renditions. There were also subtle blends and reinventions, like the wailed hook of ‘Runaways’ giving way to the wafting synthesiser of ‘Read My Mind’, or the opening notes of ‘All These Things That I’ve Done’ sustaining for several minutes purely to induce an increasingly-feverish reaction.

No matter how many times The Killers have run through these exact movements, played these hits, and Flowers stuck out the mic to let the audience finish his sentences, each moment is reborn night after night thanks to the revelry of the audience.

the killers 2022 tour band members

To the third point: all different ages flock to The Killers, from the millennial diehards reliving their teens, to the enamoured Gen Zs who discovered these songs through cultural osmosis, and the blushing mums letting loose at their annual “rock concert”. (Sidenote to the latter: What an intergenerational treat to have America’s Gerry Beckley come out for a surprise rendition of ‘Sister Golden Hair’.)

No matter who you are, where you’ve come from and what level of fandom you’re at with The Killers, there’s something to be gained by being in attendance and losing yourself in the spectacle.

After the deafening sing-along of ‘Spaceman’ transitioned directly into a spirited rework of ‘Mr. Brightside’, the night ended for most of the audience. You could’ve walked out of the venue wholly satisfied after such a performance – and yet, for a select portion of devotees, there was more to be done, making a cross-city dash from Olympic Park to Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter, where The Killers were playing a very sold-out encore set at the newly-reopened Liberty Hall (FKA Max Watt’s).

The Killers

Given the circumstances, it was only fair they opened with Hot Fuss deep-cut ‘Midnight Show’, which still felt as electric and exciting as it did circa 2004. For the next hour, a lucky few hundred watched as the unfatigued band powered through another round of catalogue classics and obscure fan favourites.

The band’s beloved cover of Joy Division’s ‘Shadowplay’ rubbed shoulders with setlist staple ‘Human’, while the Phoebe Bridgers-assisted ‘Runaway Horses’ was given a trot (sadly sans Bridgers) before another galloping ‘Mr. Brightside’ and a one-two of the criminally-underrated ‘Bones’ and ‘Run for Cover’.

The surreal nature of seeing this arena-filling band in such close quarters made the entire show feel like a fantasy sequence – resulting in a reality that we wish could have lasted just a little bit longer.

Killers Guitarist Dave Keuning Explains Why He Left The Group, How He Returned

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Guitarist Dave Keuning formed the Killers in 2001 when he took out an ad in a Las Vegas newspaper seeking musicians, and he’s a key creative voice in the group that co-wrote classics like “Mr. Brightside,” ‘Somebody Told Me” and “When You Were Young.” But he stepped off the road in 2017 to spend more time with his family, citing exhaustion. The group insisted he was still technically a member, but it became a little hard to believe when he didn’t participate in the sessions for 2020’s Imploding The Mirage and the band talked about him in the past tense to the press. (Bassist Mark Stoermer stopped touring with the Killers in 2016, but he participated in the album.)

“I don’t want to spill too much dirty laundry, but it’s been years since [Keuning has] been really been a productive part of this band,” Killers drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. told Rolling Stone in May 2020. “And it sucks. We have to get used to it, and hopefully that will level out and we’ll figure out a way forward. He can come back if that’s what he wants. This is all his decision.”

Earlier this year, however, the Killers shared a video of themselves working on their next album. At the 12-second mark, the camera pans to a masked man in the corner that is clearly Keuning. It wasn’t paired with any sort of announcement and the group has been quiet since then. (A rep for the group did not reply to a request for comment on Keuning’s statements.) But we recently spoke to Keuning about his upcoming solo LP A Mild Case of Everything , and he finally revealed what’s happening with him and the Killers.

Do you miss playing live? Yeah. I miss shows and I’m hoping to play some shows, either with myself or hopefully the Killers, whenever that is possible again. But I was just sick of the touring, which is the other 22 hours of the day, when you aren’t onstage.

I was done with that, just traveling and going back to the hotel or going back to the bus and going to the next town. I’ve done that a lot. Some people aren’t very sympathetic. But everyone’s situation is different at home, or how much they can take. Sometimes I felt like I was under a little, unnecessary microscope. It was like, “Why don’t you want to tour?” I’d be like, “You mean why don’t I want to be gone 11 months out of the year? Do I need to come up with a detailed explanation? Are you gone 11 months out of the year?”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

My perception of Brandon and Ronnie is that they thrive on that. Everyone has a different threshold or motivation or personal situation. I loved it. I really do miss the shows. I mostly miss the shows and the fans and the crowds and all that stuff. But I did it a lot for 10 years. After a while, I just wanted to experience something else. I was fortunate to get a house, but I was never there. I wanted to actually live in it and have a normal life.

Did you feel weird about other people onstage playing your parts? Yeah. I did. But I didn’t know how to feel. I still don’t know how to feel. It just is what it is. Someone was going to play my parts unless they were going to not tour at all. This was the compromise. But it feels weird. Sometimes things happen and someone will play my song and I’m like, “Hey, that’s cool and I’m flattered.” But it’s kind of a mixed emotion thing. When that happens, I just try and be rational about it.

“After a while, I just wanted to experience something else. I was fortunate to get a house, but I was never there.”

I saw them play at Madison Square Garden on the last tour. It was fun but at times it did sort of feel like the Rolling Stones without Keith Richards. Thanks for saying that. I’m a big Stones fan and a big Keith fan. And I feel like people don’t understand certain dynamics of certain bands. Speaking of the Stones, I love the Bill Wyman era. They haven’t been as good since he left.

Why didn’t you play on Imploding The Mirage ? I don’t know. I just needed a break from everything. That album was probably just as busy of a schedule as touring for 10 or 11 months. That record took a long time to record. I feel like it took a year and a half. Only they would know, but I feel like it took a while.

I just … we were kind of at a stalemate. We have broken that stalemate a little bit now and I’ve been recording on what will be the next record. I came in towards the middle of it. But I was just playing guitar on songs and just trying to make them as good as I could. I think we did write a couple songs that we put together and used my chord changes and stuff.

You said two years ago you were frustrated your songs “fell to the bottom of the pile.” The fans got the sense you left because you were unhappy with not just the heavy touring, but also your role in the creative process. Yeah. I mean, I shouldn’t be very specific because fans jump on everything I say and it’s very hard to not … I think the touring thing, I could not do anymore, even if I wanted to. It’s hard to go into it. As I said, and nobody is going to sympathize with me, but physically and mentally I could not go to the airport and devote myself to two more years of being gone. I could not do it. I was going crazy.

I’m not a big druggie or anything like that, but I get why all the past rock stars did that stuff. I understand it 100% because being on the road you start to get bored. You start to miss home. You miss your family. And what are you going to do all day? You don’t want to … I got tired of constantly feeling guilty because I was never home and I have a son.

I had all these thoughts. Also, I just needed some balance. There was no way i could do the tour. And the writing is kind of a separate question. But like I said, if it was recorded in San Diego, I probably could have been a part of it. I wasn’t ready to work out of Vegas or Utah for a year and a half.

“As time goes on, everybody wants to make something different.”

I spoke to Ronnie about a year ago . He said, “I don’t want to spill too much dirty laundry, but it’s been years since he’s been really a productive part of this band.” I remember hearing something about that and I was annoyed. But Ronnie and I get along pretty well. I don’t want to ruin that. [ Laughs ] But…[ sighs ] … we were a band in the beginning. And why did we become a band in the first place? Because we all agreed on everything. We all got along great. We all wanted to make the same kind of music.

And then as time goes on, everybody wants to make something different. People’s personal lives change. It wasn’t by choice that I wasn’t involved. I tried to contribute. [ Sigh ] I want to answer this very carefully: It’s kind of a perfect storm. I don’t have creative control. I can’t just walk in and say, “This song is going to make the record.” But also, I had so much drama going on in my personal life that it was hard for me to devote my creative brain to it 100%.

I think the break has actually done me a lot of good. Maybe that’s what I needed. I’ve felt really creative the past five years. But when my idea doesn’t get used over and over and over again, I’m kind of left with only a few choices: I can fight about it or use it in a solo project that not nearly as many people will know about, but at least it gives me a finished sense of satisfaction. And I’m happy that some of these songs are seeing the light of day instead of never being finished.

So how did you return to the band? It’s fairly simple: Something came up and we hadn’t had much contact in a couple years. I think it was kind of the pandemic, actually. They were about to go on tour before the pandemic and that tour was cancelled. And then they reached out. They were working on a record because they had all this time on their hands, and they asked if I wanted to be a part of it. I said, “I’ll try.” It hasn’t actually been super easy to get all four of us in a room because of the pandemic. But it got me talking to them again and recording with them again.

We got tested before a lot of these recording sessions, especially in the early part of it. Sometimes it was someone else, like an engineer or producer or a studio owner, that didn’t want the studio used unless everyone in it was tested. Everyone had to be willing to take risks since the last year and a half has been scary. It hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing, just logistically. But we have been able to record, which got us talking again. Things area little more relaxed. Maybe just because there wasn’t much to do or argue about.

Are you giving them material? Are they using your songs? Uh … On some songs, an idea that I came up with or worked on is going to make the record. There’s probably two of those. A lot of these were songs that were already written. I don’t want to give too much away because that would be unfair to the guys that are going to do interviews about the material, but it’s kind of a concept record. So any material written for it had to fit with it.

We’re already discussing recording yet another record, which would be crazy if the Killers would do three records in three or four years. It would be probably the quickest turnaround we’ve ever done.

“I felt like I was in a no-win situation. I couldn’t ask them to stop even though they wanted to keep going.”

Are you going to go on the tour they eventually do? I would like to. [ Laughs ] I respect you [for asking], but this is band stuff. It has been brought up. I mean … I think I will. I just don’t want to announce anything. I feel like I’ll jinx myself if I do. But I definitely miss playing the shows.

If they go out and do 100 shows, are you willing to devote that much time to the road? A hundred? That’s nothing. Are you kidding me. Yeah, I’ll do 100. What people don’t understand is that I’m only in their town one night of the year, but there were some years where [we did 200 shows] a year in the Sam’s Town/Hot Fuss era.

Will Mark be on tour also? I can’t answer that. And I honestly don’t know. I’m not him. I’m happy to be back in the picture. I’m taking it one day at a time, I guess.

The fans are going to be thrilled. To make a different band analogy, for a while it was like U2 going out without The Edge. It’s not the same band at all when you remove the guitarist. Well, I appreciate you saying that. [ Laughs ] I can’t add to that.

If The Edge said he needed a year off, I think U2 would just wait until he was ready. They wouldn’t just get some other guitarist and hit the road. I’ve had those thoughts. I’m not going to lie. I felt like I was in a no-win situation. I couldn’t ask them to stop even though they wanted to keep going. Either way, I lose, pretty much. It’s a tough choice, and there’s always fans out there that don’t understand my personal situation. “Why aren’t you there?” I’m like, “I know you hate me, but at least you’re still seeing Killers shows. I don’t know what to tell you.”

You inadvertently became a mysterious person. To use yet another band analogy, you became like Izzy Stradlin in Guns N’ Roses, a founding guitarist that wrote a bunch of the key songs and then was gone one day without a lot of explanation. Ten or 15 years ago, I would have never, ever thought I would have done that. You would have had to drag me kicking and screaming from doing a tour. I loved it. I remember growing up and wondering why band members would leave. I have a lot of respect for bands that are still together and I always wonder why members leave. It’s very hard to understand these situations unless you’re in them. And unfortunately, I’m in it.

It’s hard to walk away. I’ve been there since day one. I still love playing the hits live. That’s never going to get old, even if it’s just to see the crowd’s reaction to songs I’ve played 1,000 times. It’s as great a feeling [as it ever was].

There’s never a moment where you’re playing “Mr. Brightside” and you’re thinking, “I’ve played this damn song 10,000 times…” No. There are nights maybe where a moment comes and goes like, “Man, I’ve been doing this for six months.” But they come and go. Most of it is fun.

If you do a Killers tour, do you think you’ll play songs off Imploding The Mirage ? I’d rather…[ Pause ] Yeah, I’ll play on them. They haven’t gotten to really play those live. There will be songs from at least one or two records … if it’s on the setlist, I’ll play it.

Did it feel weird to hear a Killers record that you weren’t on? Yeah. I don’t know what to think. If you’re no longer on a sports team, do you root for or against him? I don’t know. You’re a part of them and you’re a part of the team forever. Or do you hate them because you aren’t on it? But then you get back on the team and are traded back. It’s confusing. [ Laughs ]

When I left, we used the word “hiatus.” I don’t know why we were doing things that other bands don’t bother doing, like explaining our reasons for everything. We took about a year off after Day & Age . But if we hadn’t had said anything, I don’t think people would have noticed because lots of bands do that.

Time goes by so fast that if bands wait four years for another record, you probably won’t notice because you’re doing other things and listening to other music, and all of a sudden, they’re back. But everybody kind of had a different amount of thresholds of what they could … I just couldn’t do tour/record, tour/record. I couldn’t do that forever.

I don’t blame you, but it’s great you’re back. Very few bands still have all their founding members. It should remain that way for as long as possible. You’re preaching to the choir. I agree. [ Laughs ]

All four members of The Killers are set to reunite for “heavier” new album

“It’s a little bit more canyon rock – maybe a little bit more traditional Killers"

The Killers, 2021. Credit: Danny Clinch, supplied for NME

They may have only released their new album ‘ Pressure Machine ‘ today (August 13), but The Killers have revealed to NME that they’re already at work on a “heavier” new record – and that this one is likely to feature all four members.

  • READ MORE:   The Killers on the cover – “There are a lot of young people unsure of their place in this world”

The band’s previous record ‘ Imploding The Mirage ‘ came out last year and saw guitarist Dave Keuning sit out the recording sessions to enjoy some time at home at San Diego instead.

Keuning returned for ‘Pressure Machine’ while bassist Mark Stoermer was absent due to caution around the COVID pandemic, with the rest of the band wishing to rush through the recording process without “overthinking it”.

However, for their next album, it seems that The Killers might all return together for the first time since 2017’s ‘Wonderful Wonderful’ .

“I’m just supposing here, but I think the whole COVID thing made people realise how good they have it,” drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr told NME for this week’s Big Read cover story .

“There have been some really kind remarks that I’ve never heard from the guys before that made saying, ‘Hey, I don’t want to not be on a record any more – so let’s do this’. We’re very sobered up from the experience of being locked away. I do think that all four of us are going to be on this next record. We’ve already started messing around a bit, so that’s good.”

The band also revealed that they had already been working at Keuning’s San Diego studio on what Vannucci called “orphan songs” and some “beauties” to “figure out” what the next record might sound like after the more stripped-back and country-driven sound of ‘Pressure Machine’.

“It’s a little bit more canyon rock,” said frontman Brandon Flowers, “maybe a little bit more traditional Killers, I guess.”

Vannucci, meanwhile, added that he was expecting something “a bit heavier and more clench-fisted” than ‘Pressure Machine’, adding: “We were messing around on the stage for a virtual show the other month and it felt like there was this rock n’ roll thing happening. I could see us going in that direction: something a bit more energised.”

While there was little over a year between ‘Imploding The Mirage’ and ‘Pressure Machine’, the band told NME that the wait is set to be a little longer this time – unless the pandemic pulls them away from touring once again.

Read the full NME Big Read cover story with The Killers here , where the band also open up about returning to Flowers’ childhood hometown of Nephi, childhood trauma, drug problems across America, meeting Bruce Springsteen and collaborating with Phoebe Bridgers on the track ‘Runaway Horses ‘.

‘Pressure Machine’ is out now. The Killers return to the UK for a lengthy stadium tour in 2022 .

Animated metal band Dethklok brings tour with Babymetal to the Masonic for two nights

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: April 22, 2024 / 11:23 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

The popular death metal band led by Brendan Small, the creative force behind popular Adult Swim animated show "Metalocalypse," Dethklok comes to the Masonic in San Francisco for two shows with co-headliners Babymetal.

Arguably the second most popular virtual band behind Gorillaz (the animated group helmed by Blur singer Damon Albarn), Dethklok made their as the stars of "Metalocalypse" when the show created by Small and partner/voice actor Tommy Blancha debuted in 2006. The world biggest death metal band in the program's absurd and surreal alternate universe, Dethklok stands as the planet's seventh largest economy despite the fact that the group's members are idiotic incompetents incapable of doing anything besides writing and performing brutal metal songs.

The quintet of singer Nathan Explosion (who was inspired by Cannibal Corpse vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher), guitarists Skwisgaar Skwigelf and Toki Wartooth, bassist William Murderface and drummer Pickles live and work in their massive fortress-like home and studio Mordhaus, venturing into the world to secure lucrative sponsorship deals and play huge concerts for their legions of fanatical followers with outlandish stage theatrics like over-the-top pyrotechnics, lasers and a giant swinging pendulum blade, inevitably resulting in widespread death and destruction.

Over the course of four seasons and a special broadcast on Adult Swim, "Metalocalypse" became one of the network's more popular shows and a favorite among musicians, with such notable figures as King Diamond, Alice Cooper, Jon Hamm, Werner Herzog, Jack Black and members of Metallica, Exodus, Emperor and Mastodon appearing on the show. Dethklok further built on its fanbase with a series of studio albums featuring the satirical songs featured the show like "Murmaider," "Bloodrocuted" and "Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle." The band also delivered entertaining live performances with widescreen clips of the animated band projected behind Small and his talented band including monster drummer Gene Hogland (Dark Angel, Death, Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Devin Townsend) and former Frank Zappa collaborator Mike Kenneally on guitar.

Dethklok would make regular festival appearances and tour with the likes of Mastodon, High On Fire, Machine Head and the Black Dahlia Murder. After the broadcast of the hour-long rock opera special, "Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem" in 2013, the band continued to perform, but the project went on hiatus after the show was cancelled two years later.

The band returned to action in 2019, playing the Adult Swim Festival to ecstatic crowds. Dethklok also returned to the festival post-pandemic in 2022. The following year, Smalls was at last able to release the final chapter in the Dethklok story with the film Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar , which was accompanied by both a soundtrack and the band issuing its acclaimed fourth studio recording,  Dethalbum IV .

With the show having run its course, the band's current tour could be Dethklok's last hurrah as it takes to the road with previous touring partners and co-headliners Babymetal which stops at the Masonic for two nights starting Wednesday . A sensation in their native Japan since first forming in 2010, the group mixes elements of heavy metal with elements of J-Pop and "kawaii" -- the Japanese "culture of cuteness" as exemplified by Hello Kitty and Pokemon. Singer Suzuka Nakamoto had impressed producer Kobametal (aka Key Kobayashi) in her earlier girl groups Karen Girl's and Sakura Gakuin when he wanted to start a new band performing a heavier style of music.

Initially a successful offshoot of Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became independent in 2013 and enjoyed growing popularity with the release of their self-titled debut the following year. Featuring Nakamoto along with fellow singers Moa Kikuchi (also a member of Sakura Gakuin) and Yui Mizuno executing synchronized dance moves and melodic vocals backed by a group of shredding metal session players known as the Kami Band, the album delivered a dizzying juxtaposition of sunshine pop and metallic crunch. The band rocketed to success in Japan and were playing sold-out shows to thousands when the girls were still in their teens.

The notoriety in their native land soon led to international touring in Europe and North America, with Babymetal appearing at major metal festivals and opening for Lady Gaga. By the time the band was set to release their sophomore album Metal Resistance in 2016, they were headlining Wembley Arena in London and the huge Tokyo Dome to 55,000 screaming fans. More high-profile support gigs with the Red Hot Chili Peppers followed.

While the band suffered some hardship with the accidental death of guitarist Mikio Fujioka late in 2017 after he fell from an observation deck and the departure of Mizuno due to health reasons the next year, Babymetal continued to tour and in 2023 announced the addition of Momoko Okazaki as Fujioka's permanent replacement. The band plays fan favorites and songs from its fourth album The Other One  at the Masonic. Opening acts on the two nights will be different, with hyper-technical British power metal band DrangonForce playing Wednesday and theatrical LA-based melodic death metallers Nekrogoblikon kicking off the show Thursday.

Dethklok and Babymetal Wednesday-Thursday, April 24-25, 7 p.m. $75.75 The Masonic

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Announces 2024 Inductees: Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews, Peter Frampton, Foreigner and More

Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

Popular on Variety

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:

Performer Category:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award:

  • Alexis Korner
  • John Mayall
  • Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award:

  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Dionne Warwick
  • Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award :

  • Suzanne de Passe

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.
