The State Break Down Their ‘Ball-Dipping’ Reunion Tour: ‘There’s a Gen X Nostalgia Wave’
By Andy Greene
Andy Greene
Over the past three decades, sketch comedy group The State has created an MTV series, a comedy album , a book, and a CBS special in addition to several spinoff projects like Reno 911!, Viva Variety , Stella , Wet Hot American Summer , RISK! , and Children’s Hospital . But the logistics of bringing the large troupe back together for a tour were always too daunting to even consider until just a few months ago when the SAG strike cleared off their calendars for the foreseeable future.
“We’re trying to make some lemonade,” says Ken Marino on a group interview with Rolling Ston e alongside Michael Ian Black , Kevin Allison, and Kerri Kenney-Silver, “out of some big ol’ fuckin’ lemons that were given to everybody.”
Editor’s picks
The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.
In recent years, State reunions were limited to one-off events like 2009’s San Francisco Sketchfest, 2014’s Festival Supreme, and 2020’s Covid-era Zoom fundraiser. The SAG strike gave them the chance to finally assemble a proper show, and they quickly realized it should be heavy on old characters and vintage sketches. “We knew we wanted to have a good bit of nostalgia because it seemed like a lot of people were interested in us and our history,” says Kenney-Silver. “There’s a Gen X nostalgia wave happening right now. We wanted the old sketches to have the sort of Rocky Horror Picture Show aspect where people remember the lines. We also have all this great new material that nobody had ever seen. We wanted a good balance.”
Some of the sketches, like The Bearded Men of Space Station Eleven, Louie at the Last Supper, and Taco Mail Man, were delivered beat-for-beat as they appeared on MTV. In others, they took familiar characters – like the Froggy Jamboree frogs or Barry and Levon – and put them in new situations. “We wanted to take some of the old characters that you knew, but expand the universe on those characters and those different worlds,” says Marino. “I think we tried to throw some red meat to the audience and do the old stuff, but also freshen it up a little since we wanted to do something new and fun.”
Republicans Booed at Columbia as Cops Crack Down on Protests Nationwide
Trump privately rages about his sketch artist, courtroom nap reports, i went to cash cobain's slizzyfest and all i got was that classic nyc feeling.
“We went back and forth on that,” says Black. “We wanted to acknowledge that character. But obviously with Michael not there, we couldn’t do it. This just felt like a fun, natural way to bring in Doug, and also do some audience participation, which we thought could be fun and funny and give people a kick.”
Not every sketch they considered made the final show. “We thought about doing Medication, which is a legendary sketch of ours from the NYU days,” says Allison. “It’s about someone running out of their medication during the sketch and the whole sketch becomes a huge hallucination and the stage becomes a circus. There’s a severed pigs head, calves brains, I’m naked and born out of a table. But we were like, ‘There’s no fuckin’ way.'”
Lennon also wrote an elaborate new sketch featuring a live feed of some of the cast backstage while others were on the stage. “It was a little overwhelming at the moment to try that,” says Marino. “I hope we can do it one day. It’s really exciting.”
Prior to the initial on-sale, there was no small degree of nervousness in the State camp since a tour was a completely untested endeavor. Success would largely depend on fond memories of a television show that’s been absent from the airwaves for decades. “It’s one thing to fail live onstage when you’re in your 20s and you look great,” says Kenney-Silver. “The idea of failing at 53 in a unitard onstage was terrifying. We’re just so grateful people bought tickets.”
By coincidence, the Palladium in Times Square is part of the same 1515 Broadway complex where The State was written and shot back in the Nineties.” I got really emotional walking up to the building,” says Kenney-Silver. “It hadn’t really hit me until I was walking through Times Square on the route I would normally walk to work in 1992. Walking into that building with my bag of wigs was emotional. It was such a complete experience, such a full-circle moment.”
“For me. it was a little more theoretical because we were never in that theater,” adds Black. “But just knowing we were in the same place was cool. For me, it was more about being in New York itself as a trip just because in The State in my mind is so connected with that city. It’s where we formed and where we did all of our work.”
Before they even took the stage at the Palladium, the air was thick with nostalgia since Nineties hits like Better Than Ezra’s “Good” and Fastball’s “Out Of My Head” played on the PA while a slideshow ran vintage photos of the cast. And when they opened with a new version of the classic The Jew, The Italian, and The Red Head Guy, the cast was greeted with deafening howls of joy. “It was so much fun since it was so reminiscent of our NYU shows,” says Allison. “It felt so much like being in a black box theater back at NYU, but now we’re in front of these big houses with 2,000 people or whatnot.”

The dream of so many State fans is indeed another season of the television show, which everyone says they’d gladly sign on for if given the opportunity. “For all of us, The State has been part of our entire lives,” says Marino. “To be be able to be with this group and do something with them at this stage in our lives, knowing that I met them when I was 18, is mind-blowing to me. I feel very lucky to have met these people and experienced this comedy college we all went through and created. I’m just better for it. I feel very lucky to have been able to live through these experience with these people. These are my brothers and my sister.”

From unknowns to not-quite household names, The State comedy troupe reunites for Denver show
DENVER — They may not be “household” names by Hollywood standards, but comedy fans are familiar with the work of Thomas Lennon, Ken Marino, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Ian Black, David Wain, Kevin Allison, and Michael Patrick Jann.
The actors started performing together as students at NYU in 1988. That eventually led to a sketch comedy show on MTV called “The State” in the mid-90’s. Now they’re reuniting for a 30 th anniversary show at the Paramount Theatre in Denver on August 30 .
“I love all these people, except one of them,” said Ken Marino, during an interview with Denver7. Michael Patrick Jann quickly chimed in, “the person he doesn’t love is himself.”
The rest of the interview was pretty much more of the same, with the longtime friends cracking jokes, often about how famous, or not famous, some of them are.
“One of the blessings about The State as a comedy group is that everyone from the group ended up getting so busy with film and television that it’s very hard to get us back together again, because everyone’s on a million projects... especially Ken,” said Thomas Lennon, referencing Marino.
Lennon is actually among the most recognizable from the group, having starred as Lt. Jim Dangle in Comedy Central’s “Reno 911.” All of the former members of “The State” have long lists of credits on IMDB.
Ironically, the reason they’re able to perform together right now is that none of them can work in productions, because of the Screen Actors Guild strike.
“There’s not a lot that we can do right now besides being on the picket lines, which we’re doing and that’s all great, but to be able to have this time where we can do theater together is a blessing,” said Kenney-Silver.
David Wain pointed to the similarities between working on an MTV show 30 years ago to the state of the industry now.
“At the time MTV hadn’t done a lot of programming, and we were non-union from top to bottom and had no protection of any kind and so they were able to pay us literally anything they want,” Wain said.
A portion of the proceeds from Wednesday night’s show at the Paramount will go to a fund for striking actors. The performance will feature some references to old sketches from the MTV series, as well as new comedy, music and even some dancing, judging by Monday’s rehearsal.
“It feels like we’re prepping a show back at NYU, like we’re in one of those black box rooms getting ready all over again,” said Kevin Allison, before Lennon grabbed the microphone and added “well less of us smoke now, at the time about 90 percent of the group was chain smokers.”
The State: Breakin’ Hearts and Dippin’ Balls Tour is at Denver’s Paramount Theatre Wednesday, August 30 at 8pm.

Comedy Supergroup The State Is Launching A National Tour From Denver, Testing Its Mtv Legacy
John Wenzel, Denver Post: Entertainment Mon, 08/28/2023 - 5:00am
Conducting a Zoom interview with seven comedians is especially chaotic when they’re all trying to make each other guffaw. That’s the point of their careers, the members of The State said. Ever since coming together as NYU film students in 1988, the comedy supergroup has maintained a family dynamic of loyalty to each other first, and audiences second. “It makes me realize that any choice I make really goes back to: ‘Is it something that would make this crew laugh?’ ” said Ken Marino, a director and producer who has co-starred in cult hits such as “Party Down,” “Wet Hot American Summer” and “The Other Two.” “That’s never left me.” A still from “The State” sketch called “The Jew, The Italian and the Read Head Gay,” which first ran on MTV and appeared in the 2009 book “The Union of the State.” (Jana Rosenblatt, Cision PR) After their four-season MTV sketch show, also called “The State,” went off the air in 1995, the members moved into other projects.

Pick of the Day: The State: Breakin’ Hearts & Dippin’ Balls (in NYC) 10/16 & 10/17
Legendary (and yes, it’s appropriate here) sketch group, The State , comprised, for this night, of Ken Marino, David Wain, Kerri Kenney, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Ian Black, Kevin Allison, and Michael Patrick Jann are getting back together for an exclusive tour (that might blossom into something bigger maybe with Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant, and Todd Holoubeck?) maturely called Breakin’ Hearts & Dippin’ Balls . The ramifications of The State reassembling are so massive, which is partially why it happens so rarely (that and the fact that each individual member is quite successful on their own comedy path).
Thus far, they’ve only got dates in Denver and NYC lined-up, but that means you kind of should go out of your way to make sure you catch what you can of the Breakin’ Hearts & Dippin’ Balls tour. For New Yorkers, The State will be taking over Palladium Times Square on Oct. 16th & 17th with tickets going on sale this Wed. at 10AM ET/7AM PT (use the code “STATE” for early access) starting at $67.
Set a reminder and go snag those tickets here .
Pick of the Day: SF Sketchfest’s Festpocalypse 1/30
It’s the first day of 2021 even though it feels like 2020 is still going on and doing it’s terrible, terrible thing, you can, if you’re up for it, try to start the year anew.
In that regard, we’d like to remind you of the first real big comedy event of the year (it’s still virtual, FYI): SF Sketchfest’s Festpocalypse . Coming in at the end of January right around when SF Sketchfest, one of the world’s biggest comedy festivals would normally happen, Festpocalypse will be a virtual event at a proportion that SF Sketchfest hasn’t ever done. Just take a gander at that line-up on the flyer. Even though it’s taking place over one day only, it really is a bill that they’d have at their normally scheduled, three week comedy festival extravaganza that takes over San Francisco.
Also, you should note that Festpocalypse is a fundraiser for SF Sketchfest to keep going in the future when doing a big time festival will be allowed.
Festpocalypse is set for Jan. 30th and will begin streaming at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets start at only $20, but go up if you want to snag some merch. Go get them here .
Pick of the Day: Zoom with The State (Benefit for CA Immigrant Resilience Fund & NAACP)
A reunion of one of the most foundational sketch troupes and absurdist comedy of all time, The State , is a rarity. Leave it to a time like now where supporting organizations like the NAACP and the California Immigrant Resilience Fund is more important than ever for The State to reconvene to do a live reading of their favorite sketches, visit unreleased material, do a Q&A as well as an exclusive memorabilia auction.
Slated to appear will be almost all of The State including Kevin Allison, Michael Ian Black, Todd Holoubek, Michael Patrick Jann, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Michael Showalter, and David Wain.
All of this will be taking place on Zoom this Wed. Jun. 10th at 6PM PT/9PM ET . You can and should get your tickets here .

Folks like Keegan-Michael Key, Paul Rudd, A.D. Miles , and Rob Corddry are also featured.
It’s called The Union of The State and it’s set for release on May 3rd . The release coincides with the group’s reunion after 25 years since their inception.
Comedy Central’s 1900s Comedy “Another Period” Adds Michael Ian Black, David Koechner, Paget Brewster, David Wain, More
Whether you’re aware of it or not, Comedy Central is on a roll. Drunk History, Nathan For You, Broad City, “@midnight”, Kroll Show , seem to all be solid in so many respects and thus, it shouldn’t be a surprise that their 1900s scripted comedy Another Period starring Riki Lindhome and Natasha Leggero has just added a stellar supporting/guest cast .
Lauren Ash, Michael Ian Black, Paget Brewster, Beth Dover, Brett Gelman, Brian Huskey, David Koechner, Jason Ritter, David Wain and Armen Weitzman are all set to round out the show following Rhode Island ’s “first family”.
While, Another Period won’t come around until 2015, 2015 isn’t that far off.
The State Reunited on “@midnight”
Though only Michael Showalter, Kerri Kenney, and Michael Ian Black were playing on “@midnight with Chris Hardwick” last night, The State indeed did come together, even if they were only slightly aware of it.

New national tour of "Company" brings modern take on classic tale to Denver Center for the Performing Arts
By Dillon Thomas
Updated on: April 24, 2024 / 6:19 PM MDT / CBS Colorado
The national tour of "Company,' visiting the Denver Center for the Performing Arts next month, promises to bring audiences a new take on a classic musical. The show, which plays at the Buell Theatre from May 22 through June 2, has been redesigned to make the story more applicable to modern audiences.
The show, which was first written in the late 1960s, originally followed the story of a man named Bobby. Bobby was a single man who had not been married nor had any children.
Now, this new version of the production follows the story of a woman named Bobbie who has a similar lifestyle.
"The societal pressures for women today, turning 35 especially without children, are very different than an unmarried man," said Britney Coleman, the actress cast as "Bobbie."
Bobbie is a woman who is celebrating her 35th birthday in the production.
"It would be like any other birthday if it weren't for the fact that she is single, doesn't have any kids, isn't in any committed relationship. And yet all of her very close friends are, and they have strong opinions about it," Coleman said.
Coleman said the storyline is one that she can personally connect with, and one which she feels many in the audience will be able to as well.
"I have personally experienced a lot of people saying, 'hmm, it is about time (to get married and have children), isn't it?'" Coleman said.
Matt Rodin, the actor who portrays "Jamie" in the production, said the new take on the gender of characters has modernized the story in a way more people will be able to relate with.
"It is sort of shocking to see how these men treat these women (in the original production). To now have that flipped on its head, it makes it feel like it is happening right now," Rodin told CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas. "It gives us, the audience in 2024, the opportunity to know these people in a way that we might not recognize them if they were playing the same roles in the 1970s. They are contemporized."
Those who loved the original production should still find the current take to be funny, fun and lively, according to Coleman.
"A lot of our script hasn't changed, other than the pronouns," Coleman said.
"What I love about this show is that it poses questions rather than giving us answers of what it means to be in partnership, what it means to be married, what it means to have relationships," Rodin said.

‘Two Idiot Girls’ Host Drew Afualo Launches 21-Date Summer Comedy Tour for ‘Loud’ Book Release | Exclusive
The multi-hyphenate comedian kicks things off at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre with her memoir-manifesto’s July 30 release
Drew Afualo is coming back to the people. The TikTok sensation, hit podcast host, women’s rights advocate and freshly minted author (“Loud: Accept Nothing Less Than the Life You Deserve” hits bookshelves July 30) set her new comedy tour Monday with 21 dates across the U.S., TheWrap has exclusively learned.
Kicking off in New York City at Gramercy Theatre the day of the book’s release, Afualo described the engagement as a fusion of book tour-meets-comedy tour-meets-live podcast taping for her “Two Idiot Girls” comedy project with sister Deison.
“The things you can always count on for any live show I do are a silly goose time and laughter,” Afualo, who boasts 7.9 million followers on TikTok and 1 million on Instagram , told TheWrap. “My favorite aspect of my content that this show encompasses, besides empowering people, is getting a chance to make them laugh. Both aspects will be prioritized in every show!”
Patreon subscribers to “Two Idiot Girls” get exclusive presale access for the tour beginning Monday, while VIP tickets become available Tuesday and general sale tickets open Friday at 10 a.m. local time.
Known for hilariously taking down misogynistic men and empowering women everywhere with heart-strong self-love, Afualo has been dubbed “The Internet’s Crusader for Women” — and “Loud” follows in-step with that mission. A “manual for fearlessly confident living,” the summer release is part memoir, part life roadmap and part laugh-out-loud manifesto. It helps, too, that “Loud” comes with an endorsement from Questlove, the Grammy-winning musician, Oscar-winning documentarian and New York Times bestselling author of “Creative Quest” and the upcoming “Hip-Hop Is History.”
Afualo told TheWrap that the “most gratifying” part of writing “Loud” was “getting to immortalize my words in print forever, something I never thought I would get to do.”
“What I hope resonates with my fans the most is all the ideology behind loving yourself unconditionally and unabashedly,” she said. “I hope they hold onto that so they can give themselves all the love and respect they deserve in this life!”
As far as having Questlove in her corner, the multi-hyphenate comedian added that his involvement “has been such an amazing and surreal experience.”
After wrapping her “Loud”/”Two Idiot Girls” summer tour on Aug. 25 in Phoenix, Afualo will then hit the road in November to open for another comedy heavyweight: Whitney Cummings. But first, it’s her name on the marquee.

The Ride the Rockies Bicycle Tour, a cherished institution in Colorado’s cycling community for more than three decades, has been canceled for 2024 due to lack of interest, according to the event’s website .
Founded by The Denver Post in 1986, Ride the Rockies was a fully supported tour that took cycling enthusiasts to dozens of locations around the state and over many high mountain passes over the years. The Post sold the event in 2021 to a subsidiary of Gannett USA Today, Ventures Endurance Events.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the towns, participants, sponsors, crew, volunteers, and supporters who have had a role in making this ride so special for the past 37 years,” the event website states.
Efforts to reach tour officials for more information resulted only in an email repeating the statement on the website.
It is unknown whether there will be an attempt to bring the event back next year in some form, or to sell it to another organizer. Officials are “assessing the best options for this beloved ride,” according to the website.
At its peak, the six-day event attracted more than 2,000 cyclists annually for rides of 60 to 80 miles per day. It supported nonprofits in the more than 50 towns it visited over the years.
The website says refunds for those who registered for this year’s tour will be automatically processed within 60 days of submission through EnMotive, an event registration website. Registrants also will receive a commemorative jersey “as a memento and token of our deep appreciation.”

Vail Comedy Show returns this week with pop-up at Drunken Goat in Edwards
News News | Apr 25, 2024
Vail Daily staff report
Vail Comedy Show is back on Friday with a special pop-up show in Edwards at The Drunken Goat. Portland, Oregon-based comedian Andrew Sleighter will headline. He is a nationally touring headliner who has appeared on “ C onan” and “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” Denver-based comedian Jeremy Cash and a very special guest will join host Mark Masters. Sleighter answered these questions in advance of his visit.
Have you ever performed in the Vail Valley?
No, but I’m excited to bring some laughs to the Colorado mountains again.
Do you have a favorite Colorado comedy memory?
I performed at the Aspen Comedy Festival a bunch of years ago with some amazing comedians like Christopher Titus, Tom Rhodes and Josh Sneed. They had us do a television interview at the top of a ski area, but my wife and I don’t ski so we did the interview and then just rode the ski lift right back down the mountain. Shows were great though.

What do you know about Vail Comedy Show?
I know that it’s hosted by Mark Masters who’s quickly becoming a good friend of mine!
Any major events coming up?
My daughter starts preschool in the fall. Beyond that just continuing to tour and trying to make people laugh. You can always listen to my podcast The Cavalry for more updates!
You live in Oregon but tour nationally, how does Colorado compare to other markets?
I find Colorado audiences to be quite similar to Oregon audiences. Very outdoorsy and earnestly looking to have a good time. Colorado crowds dress better though.
How would you describe your comedy?
Clean, but in a way that you wouldn’t notice until later that night if you really thought about it. Observational, spending most of my time on everyday personal things with a sprinkling of geopolitical events.
What is next for Andrew Sleighter?
Headlining the world-famous Comedy Works in downtown Denver for the first time on Sunday!
Vail Comedy Show takes a pause in May as it focuses on the Vail Comedy Festival which will happen alongside SpringFree Bluegrass Festival over Memorial Day Weekend. The annual event brings more than thirty comedians to walking distance venues around Vail Village at dozens of events. It includes magic and live podcast tapings plus traditional stand-up shows.
