When it comes to smiles, Tom Cruise ’s teeth might take the cake — unless you look very closely . More than three decades in to his career, Tom is still one of the hottest actors in showbiz. He’s starring in the upcoming film Mission: Impossible — Fallout , scheduled for release on July 27, and we know his impeccable acting chops and winning good looks will make the movie a great one. No matter how phenomenal he is as an actor, we can’t help but notice that Tom’s smile consists of a rather odd middle tooth .

While he has amazing pearly whites, Tom’s 100-watt grin has one tooth that’s just a bit out of place. You can see from the photo that his teeth aren’t exactly symmetrical with the center of his face. Many have noticed that the 55-year-old actor’s right front tooth is just a tad askew, and has been widely referred to as his “middle tooth” for quite a while now.

Tom has certainly put in the time and effort to achieve the smile he has today. At age 40, just after his split from Nicole Kidman the Hollywood vet got braces to address an overbite and misalignment problems. He proudly showed them off while walking the red carpet at the 2002 premiere of Minority Report .

Tom has never been shy about flaunting his less-than-perfect smile. Tom Cruise’s Dental Journey — What’s Up With His Middle Tooth?

Tom Cruise has been flashing his classic cocky grin for decades — but have you noticed that it’s misaligned? As Cruise bursts back into the spotlight with Top Gun: Maverick , we’re still wondering about his mysterious “middle tooth.”

Long before Tom Cruise became  an ever-bankable action star , he was Steve Randle in  The Outsiders . And, amidst a cast full of fresh-faced brat pack hunks , it’s his unique set of chompers that set the young actor apart.

Cruise was injured in a hockey accident when he was young — hit by a flying puck — which left his front tooth chipped. And when filming The Outsiders , he decided to remove the cap that covered the crack. The result was purposefully unattractive, as Cruise meant to emulate his dirt-poor greaser character. And though The Outsiders was Cruise’s third movie, the 1983 film marked the first noticeable showcase for his unique mouth.

Corrective Procedures

As Tom Cruise’s career progressed, it’s clear that he received some orthodontic treatments. In addition to getting the original chip filled in, his teeth were whitened and straightened. Famously, in 2002, the then-40-year-old donned adult braces at the Minority Report premiere. Twenty years on, it may seem shocking; less noticeable options like Invisalign are now quite common. But for the time, Cruise’s bracket-less upper braces were actually a subtle choice.

Still, even after braces, Cruise’s signature smile was not quite perfect. His midline is off, creating the appearance of a so-called “middle tooth.” In the video above, a doctor from Premier Orthodontics breaks it down.

The average person has seven teeth on each side on each of their midline. But if you count Cruise’s teeth, it’s apparent that he’s missing the second pre-molar on his left side. (That would be the third tooth from the back.) Naturally, then, when Cruise lost his baby tooth the teeth around it would slide in toward that space… resulting in a midline that’s shifted roughly half-a-tooth toward the left.

And it’s not so uncommon — roughly 3% of the population has a missing tooth.

But since Tom Cruise is, well, Tom Cruise, the obvious next question is… Why doesn’t he get it fixed? The man has an estimated net worth of $600 million! But those options would require another, a longer period of more intense braces.

Tom Cruise’s Adult Braces

Open-coiled springs are one option. The small springs could be wedged into the braces, around the missing premolar, to slowly open up space for a dental implant to be added. In all, the process would take around two years. And two years as a metal mouth is a lot for a man who’s bringing in hundreds of millions at the box office — at age 59!

Regardless of the alignment of his teeth, or his missing premolar, one thing is for sure: Tom Cruise has the smile of a movie star.

A lot of people don’t believe Tom Cruise’s teeth ever underwent a makeover.

Some fanatics even go to the extent of trying to prove the claims to be lies.

If you have, well, props to you!

In most photos circulating the Internet, you can see that Tom’s teeth are bizarrely white!

Even before breaking through with 1983's "Risky Business," Cruise had always been rather conscious of how he looked in front of the camera, his old agent Eileen Berlin told the Daily Mail in February 2022. "Tommy had many faces — you see it in the photos," the retired executive said.

According to Berlin, with whom Cruise lived when he was starting out at 18, Cruise relentlessly prepared before photo sessions, in an effort to emphasize what he considered to be his strongest features. "We had a mirrored wall and he'd walk around in his little jockey shorts and nothing else and ball up his fists and flex his biceps and admire himself in the mirror," she described. While he knew he was handsome, Cruise was self-conscious about his height . "He said he would like some shoes that would lift him up a bit," she said.

Cruise has reportedly gone to great lengths to conceal his 5 foot, 7 inch stature, often making producers apply different techniques to make him appear as tall as his co-stars, according to Refinery29 . In light of Cruise's perceived vanity, rumors about plastic surgery and other corrective procedures has followed him throughout his career. Everyone has an opinion about Tom Cruise's front teeth

Tom Cruise's smile was a big part of the boyish charm that made him so popular in the '80s and '90s. But his wasn't what most would call a perfect smile. As seen in the photo above, Cruise's front teeth aren't aligned with the center of his face, giving the impression Cruise has a "mono-tooth," as  Metro described. "The mid point between his two central upper teeth (the dental midline) did not match the midline of his face, giving him the appearance of a single prominent front tooth," said Dr. Asif Chatoo of  The London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic .

Some believe the trait was less pronounced in his early career , leading experts to conjecture that Cruise has undergone upper jaw surgery, Showbiz Cheat Sheet noted. Additionally, the perceived changes in color and texture of Cruise's teeth has given way to theories he has used porcelain veneers, according to Life & Style magazine. Others have also suggested he has whitened his teeth, but, honestly, who in showbiz hasn't? It was Hollywood that popularized the practice to begin with, U.K. clinic St. Peter's Lodge  noted.

But, just as Cruise has never addressed his supposed insecurity about his height, he also doesn't really comment on his smile. The only concrete evidence we have of anything he's done comes from the 2002 "Minority Report" premiere, where he was photographed wearing braces that he got to help correct an overbite. "My mouth wasn't closing properly," he said (via  Time ).

Tom Cruise inspired cosmetic surgery rumors as recently as 2021

Tom Cruise's looks drew unwanted public attention in October 2021 when he attended a baseball game, Page Six reported. The "Mission Impossible" star's face looked swollen, leading many to wonder whether Cruise had had cosmetics procedures done or gained weight. Social media users took to Twitter to mock his appearance, drawing comparisons to Norm MacDonald, who had recently died . "Norm macdonald being reincarnated into tom cruise is one of his best bits ever," one wrote .

However, many others defended Cruise while criticizing the normalization of online body-shaming. "I had hoped people learnt to not comment on men's bodies after mocking Zac Efron for gaining weight and supposedly being 'ugly,' despite knowing his history of eating disorders, addiction and body image struggles," one user tweeted . "Leave Tom Cruise and his face alone. People are allowed to change."

Even before that, during the shooting of  The Outsiders  (1983), where he played the role of Steve Randle, the then 21-year-old Cruise removed the cap from one of the front teeth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match.

Despite the dental flaw, the 58-year-old never lacked conviction. During his initial days as a Hollywood hero, Cruise mentioned why he happily embraced his newly found sex symbol status.

In a 1985 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he explained that the tag neither bothered him, nor did he particularly like it.

In 2021, Showtime released a docuseries titled Gossip. During the series' production, a former editor-in-chief at The New York Post named Col Allen was interviewed, and he revealed an amazing story about Tom Cruise's teeth.

According to Allen, Cruise invited him out one night and in the middle of their time together, two of the actor's veneers fell out of his mouth. In response, Cruise, who is well known for his affluent lifestyle , begged Allen not to reveal the story.

“They bought a house in the Village, and they wanted some privacy and they were worried about Page Six . So Tom wanted to have a drink with me, and you know, talk about his expectations."

“We went to a place — I think it was on 54th street, called Circo. We sat in a corner and he actually ordered a bottle of red wine, which I thought was surprising because he was a Scientologist and they generally don’t drink.”

“And we’re drinking and talking, and the next thing I know, both of his front teeth fell out onto the table cloth right in front of me.”

“I mean, this is a face that’s on posters all over the world, good looking guy and there are his front teeth."

“I made the mistake of telling Cindy, who you know [said] ‘Oh my god that’s great, I’m gonna write that,’" he recalled, "and I said, ‘No you can’t do that. I gave Tom my word I wouldn’t do it.’"

“So you know, that story was never published until I’ve just told you right now, so there you go.”

While he has a great set of pearly white teeth, Cruise has one tooth that’s out of place, so not all of his teeth seem like they are lined up symmetrically with the center of his face.

Tom Cruise definitely takes care of his teeth, as looking good is an important characteristic for a leading man. In fact, when he was 40 years old, following his divorce from Nicole Kidman , Cruise wore braces to fix an overbite and misaligned teeth.

He showed off a new, fixed smile on the red carpet at the 2002 premiere of  Minority Report .

But Tom Cruise is willing to look less than perfect. While he cares about looking good, he cares about acting even more.

When Cruise played the character Steve Randle in 1983’s  The Outsiders , he voluntarily removed the cap from a front tooth for the role. That tooth was chipped by a flying hockey puck.

Tom Cruise has never publicly stated exactly what dental work he’s had done, but dentists speculate that, in addition to his braces, Cruise got porcelain veneers and whitening treatments .

At 5 feet 7 inches in height, Cruise has shown the world that he can be a successful leading man due to his great acting skills and his confidence. And it’s his confidence that makes his winning smile so charming.
