This was by far my favorite tour in Spain. Mariela was fantastic and we really enjoyed our time with her. The monastery and views were amazing. Lunch was great and the wine tour was more than expected. We truly loved our time with Mariela and would book another tour with her when we come back!

We did a Priorat wine tour from Escaladei and it was great! Our host Mariela was wonderful and the wineries we visited were all different, inviting and the wines were delish!

This tour was the highlight of our trip to Barcelona. Our guide was Samuel, who was exceptionally well informed. The lunch was supposed to be a 3 course meal but was actually more like 5 or 6 courses. It was one of the best meals we had during our trip. The Priorat area is a unique and prestigious wine region. I have visited several others and I would put this one at the top of my list. I would highly recommend a visit to the Priorat region and out guide Samuel to anyone with an interest in wine.

Spanish Trails tours and guides are the best! We went out to the Priorat wine region with Craig on 3/3 and could have had a better time. We had comfortable safe transport, delicious wine and lunch included as well as stops for impressive views and stories along the way. The wine cellars we visited were all unique and special in their own ways. Definitely not something you could arrange on your own without prior knowledge and relationships in this region. We will definitely be back to tour again with Spanish trails!

We had an amazing private tour with Jose. Four stop for tapas and wine mixed with a walking tour of the Old Town districts. Jose picked the best selections to give us a great variety. His attention to detail did not go unrecognized. He quickly picked up on our likes and preferences. The entire tour was comfortable and natural with no forced conversation or awkward moments. I highly recommend this tour, especially if you love to walk. We did cover a lot of ground but it was absolutely worth it! You cannot go wrong here!

Martin was a wonderful guide. He was kind, fun, and knowledgeable. The tour of Montserrat, lunch, and winery visit were all fantastic. It was a great day trip.

A wonderful tour headed by a knowledgeable guide. The travel itinerary was perfectly timed. We didn't give 5 stars to the accommodation item because we were not happy with the room allocated to us in Valencia. The toilet was clean but had a very bad smell. Also the tap on the vanity didn't work properly. All the other hotels deserved a 10 of 10.

The Tour was good, Marica the guide very well organized everything, she is friendly, funny. Juan the driver was an amazing driver, he took us everywhere safely, I don't know how he can park that large bus. The hotels were nice, clen, the breakfast's were good, and the city guides were knowledgeable, they know the history very well. It was a tour the I learned about Spain a lot. Julia travel organized this trip well so it was very enjoyable.

What people love about Barcelona Tours

The itinerary was good; liked the fact that we had a lot of time on our own and that we had the same hotel at least 2 nights in a row. Did not like the fact that we had to take a public bus to our hotel with luggage in tow, and that we had to drag our luggage to various pick-up stops. We have not experienced that on prior tours. The day in Cordoba was poorly planned, leaving us no time to tour the city on our own as was promised. Otherwise everything was fine.
Had a wonderful time, the tour guide was very helpful and the hotels were of good standard.
Before I arrived on this tour I thought my highlights would be Barcelona and San Sebastian but honestly, I enjoyed every moment of the holiday! The food and drink in this region is excellent and relatively cheap compared to the UK. You don't spend much time on the tour at the start in Barcelona or at the end in Madrid so I would recommend booking at least an extra night pre/post tour to be able to both great cities. Pamplona has a nice historical old town with some nice walks. San Sebastian is just the place to go to for foodies but is also a nice place in its own right! Logrono is the capital of the La Rioja region so you know you'll get to taste some good wine. I will definitely be coming back to this region! For the tour overall, I felt that we didn't really need 2 nights in Logrono and could have done with either an extra night in San Sebastian to visit Bilbao or a night in Bilbao itself. And that's taking into account the included evening tour of Logrono and the winery tour activities. Beware the 4hr + coach journey from Logrono to Madrid. Our tour leader, Maria Christina did a great job considering that she had to take over at short notice. She organised all our public transport and organised the optional meals, selecting some very decent restaurants. I definitely think she made the trip more enjoyable! I had great fun on this trip and hopefully have made some good friends for life!

We introduce some of the city’s trusted tour operators, together with the wide range of guided tours, day trips and experiences they offer. Plus some fun and original activities you can reserve via Barcelona Life.

There’s a lot more to Barcelona than  lying on the beach , and if you want to make the most of your time in the Catalan capital and get a real insight into the city then you won’t regret investing some of your travel budget on a guided tour of the town.

Excursions and activities in these parts come in all shapes and sizes, starting with  traditional walking tours , where a well-informed guide talks you through the famed and iconic sights like the  Gothic Cathedral ,  La Sagrada Familia basilica  and the  Ciutadella Park  (to name but a few!), to more energetic  cycling tours , where a bit of pedal power will help you see the best of the city in little more than an afternoon.

Whilst lazy bones can give their legs a holiday too by  renting scooters  to zip in between  attractions , or by selecting the classic hop-on, hop-off tour bus service which enables you to take in the city at your own pace, and makes getting around town a doddle.

If you really want to pull out the stops however, how about taking a helicopter ride and see the city from above? Or else seeing it from the water on a sailing yacht? Or why not see what the rest of Catalonia has to offer by taking a train to the Penedes for a spot of wine tasting in the vineyards , sea kayaking on the Costa Brava , or visiting the sacred monastery at Montserrat . Keep reading this article for a list of providers who can make all of the above, and much more, happen…

There are an increasing number of travel and tourism specialists who offer some truly original trips, activities and experiences in and around the city…

Those fiercely independent travellers who prefer to tackle sightseeing with just a map and a guidebook might not be tempted by a yellow umbrella tour of the main attractions, but there are an increasing number of travel and tourism specialists who offer some truly original trips, activities and experiences in and around the city – many are well worth considering.

Tapas and other food-tasting tours  in the evening, flamenco shows and  pub crawls at night , alternative tours of street art and forgotten districts, specialist artistic tours, hot air balloon flights over Catalonia, and  day trips  to the likes of  Montserrat , Tarragona,  Sitges  and the Penedes wine region (where you can sample some tasty  Cava ). Whilst fans of the city’s famous  Catalan art nouveau architecture needn’t leave the city disappointed as there are nearly as many experts offering  Gaudi-themed tours  as there are sands on Barceloneta beach.

Many companies now offer experiences which, whilst not technically tours, can seriously enrich your time in Barcelona. Cooking classes with fresh ingredients from  La Boqueria Market , hiking in the beautiful St. Miquel del Fai nature sanctuary,  sailing trips on the Mediterranean  or watching the sunset over Barcelona are just a few example.

Finally adrenaline junkies will also find tour providers offering them  go-karting ,  paintballing , gun shooting, off-roading, sky-diving and even deep sea fishing – all popular activities for  stag nights  and  hen parties .

Walking Planets

A fresh new venture launched by an officially-accredited Barcelona guide, Walking Planets is the antidote to stuffy tours of the predictable sights. They’ll take you for a walk on the wild side of Barcelona, such as the vibrant Raval district where you’ll discover the city’s maritime and industrial history and learn about the contemporary art projects that have helped lift the once undesirable area. The Walking Planets project really gives you the inside picture of both historic and contemporary Barcelona. They also have tours of Barri Gotic and El Born and private artistic tours. www.walkingplanets.com

These travel experts have grouped all of Barcelona’s best experiences under their expansive umbrella and a quick browse of their website reveals a host of tempting options, from bus tours of the city’s most famous monuments to themed walking tours tracing the footsteps of Gaudi and Picasso. Also on offer are a host of day trips to exciting destinations such as Tarragona, Sitges and Vic. Fancy something a little different? How about private hot air balloon ride? www.barcelonacitytours.com

Recommended Tours & Activities

Every one has their favourite things to do in Barcelona, and we are no exception. Here are a few unmissable experiences for the first time traveller to Catalonia…

Spanish Cooking Class

One of the best ways to understand a country’s culture is through its cuisine, and during this popular activity you’ll step into the kitchen with a talented Catalan chef and learn how to prepare a four course meal with fresh produce from La Boqueria market. Great fun and authentic. Click on the link for more info and details on how to book.

Flamenco Performances

The Spanish gypsy dance has a flourishing scene in Barcelona and few travellers choose to visit the city without stopping by a show. We recommend two different experiences. The first is an hour-long formal show with full dinner (or just drink if you prefer). The second is a half hour show combined with tapas tasting and very affordable at just €35 per person.

Montserrat & Wine Tasting

Combine an excursion to Catalonia’s unique “jagged mountain” and its abbey in the skies, with a visit to a 10th century castle and its vineyards, where you’ll get to taste some of the region’s fine wines. A small group tour, your private transport will pick you and drop you off in the centre of the city. Click on the link to find out more.

More Info & Ideas

Hopefully by now you’ve got plenty of inspiration about how best to fill your time in Barcelona… but let us finish by pointing out that we’ve got extended articles on  the best bike tours ,  food and wine activities ,  countryside excursions ,  water sports ,  things to do for couples , or  families with kids , plus simply  more original ideas  all on this website. In short, you won’t be bored!

Best Barcelona Guided Tours FAQ

The best time to take a tour of Barcelona is a matter of personal taste. Just keep in mind that Barcelona is a year-round destination. If you love warm weather and want to enjoy the beaches, the summer months are ideal.

However, keep in mind that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices. If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, aim to visit during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). The weather is still pleasant, and you can explore the city without the summer hustle and bustle.

Barcelona’s must-see attractions include the iconic Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló . Their breathtaking architecture devised by Antoni Gaudí are the most characteristic spots in the city.

You can also take a leisurely stroll down La Rambla or visit the nearby Gothic Quarter is a must-visit to immerse yourself in the city’s history. And of course, don’t miss out on the beautiful Barcelona beaches, where you can relax and soak in the Mediterranean sun.

It’s essential to select the Barcelona tour that aligns with your interests and preferences. First, determine what aspects of Barcelona intrigue you the most. Are you interested in architecture, art, history, food, or a combination of these?

Look for tours that focus on those specific aspects. Reading reviews and testimonials from previous participants can also give you valuable insights into the quality and experience of the tour. And of course, the list above on my blog is a good start!

It is highly recommended to book your Barcelona tours online in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. Some popular tours and attractions may have limited spaces, and booking ahead guarantees your spot.

Additionally, certain guided tours offer skip-the-line access to popular attractions, helping you bypass long queues and make the most of your time in Barcelona.

Booking in advance also gives you the opportunity to plan your itinerary better, ensuring you have enough time to explore all the must-see sights.

Most Barcelona tours last around 3-4 hours, so you should budget about half your day. However, there are a number of full day tours that involve visits to more than one destination, or trips outside the city to Montserrat, the Costa Brava, or local wine regions.

The popular Bus Turistic is available in 24 or 48 hour packages, which give you access to an open top double-decker bus that will transport you between 30+ stops throughout the city.

The best Barcelona tour is entirely subjective based on your personal preferences. If you’re looking for a complete overview of the city, the Barcelona hop on hop off bus allows you to take a self-guided tour of Barcelona via its 30+ stops in 24 or 48 hour increments.

Otherwise, the Park Güell & Sagrada Família packaged tour provides entrance and guided tours through Barcelona’s top two attractions. And the Barcelona Tapas & Wine Experience gives you a taste of La dolce vita, Catalan-style .

The Best Tours to Take in Barcelona in 2024 and Why

Sean Finelli Last Updated: October 29, 2023

Barcelona is really big. It’s the second-most-populous city in Spain. This makes it nearly impossible to see all the sights without a plan in advance. Luckily, we have several tours to make your Barcelona vacation one that you won’t soon forget! Here are the best Barcelona tours to take.

Pro Tip: Planning ahead will help your trip run smoothly, so consider bookmarking this page in your browser. Also, check out our guide to Barcelona —it has helpful information about restaurants, hotels, and activities.

Should You Take a Tour of Barcelona?

Barcelona is a great city to visit, which shows in the number of visitors here each year. This is due to the density of cultural attractions, great food, beautiful landscapes, and really fun people. That said, what should you do when in the city?

Well-organized small group tours are a great way to introduce yourself to a city and learn things that you wouldn’t learn on your own. Tours take a lot of the guesswork out of visiting attractions and you get great knowledge from a local.

Meeting locals comes with many other perks such as picking their brain about other great places to visit, restaurants, and where to go out at night. A tapas bar that locals love is going to be so much better than a tourist trap. These are just a few reasons why taking a tour in Barcelona is totally worth it. Here are some of our best Barcelona tours and some reviews from real customers!

But since this beloved Spanish city is also on the Mediterranean Sea, we couldn’t ignore the many opportunities to enjoy sailing around the city. From tapas to Sagrada Família and Park Güell, there are plenty of options to fill your itinerary for Barcelona below.

  • Unbeatable Barcelona in a Day Tour
  • Skip the Line Sagrada Família Tour
  • Barcelona Food and Wine Tour with a Local Sommelier
  • Montserrat Monastery Tours from Barcelona
  • Barcelona in Half a Day on Electric Bike

tour companies in barcelona spain

Have a limited amount of time in Barcelona? No problem. This tour combines our Park Güell and Sagrada Família tours to make sure you get a jam-packed, best-of-the-best excursion of the most popular sites.

In just a few hours, you’ll see celebrated architect Antoni Gaudí’s greatest works, including skip-the-line tickets to Casa Battló and Sagrada Família. This day tour is the perfect option to check every Barcelona must-see attraction off your itinerary list.

2. Skip the Line Sagrada Familia Tour

tour companies in barcelona spain

The Sagrada Família is not only one of the most celebrated buildings in Barcelona but in the entire world. With its highly decorative towers, this church is one of the most visited buildings due to its unique design. You can look at the architecture and have no idea the stories behind it, or you can go with a super knowledgeable guide who brings it to life.

Due to its popularity, the tower is typically plagued by long lines and even longer waits. What’s worse is that tickets often sell out quickly, meaning you might waste time in a line for nothing. The solution is to book ahead with a tour group to ensure guaranteed access and a memorable visit. Best of all, with us you’ll skip the line and save your vacation time!

3. Barcelona Food and Wine Tour with a Local Sommelier

tour companies in barcelona spain

Eat your way through Barcelona with this fun and popular food tour. Centered around the vibrant neighborhoods of Poble Sec and Sant Antoni, this tour includes a variety of local, authentic cuisine, including Barcelona’s best tapas and a traditional Spanish dinner at a Barcelona bodega. These aren’t your typical bodegas; these are beautiful restaurants brimming with vibrancy, culture, and local food.

Before you think this tour is all about the food, trust us that you’ll wash it all down with traditional Spanish vermouth and cava (sparkling wine). With your local sommelier guide, explore some wine pairings. By the end of this tour, you’ll have tasted your way through Spanish history, and learned quite a few things along the way. It’s, hands down, the most in-depth food tour in Barcelona and not one to miss.

4. Montserrat Day Trips from Barcelona to the Monastery

view of montserrat monastery

If you’re visiting Barcelona and want to get out of the city for a little bit, this is the tour for you. Away from the traffic and bustle of the city, atop the Montserrat mountain, sits an 11th-century monastery dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat.

This trip includes air-conditioned transportation from the city, tickets for the cogwheel train to the monastery, and breathtaking views of Barcelona and the sea. Along with the beautiful vistas, check out a local market filled with fresh goods. Maybe even take time for a short hike. On the longer tour, you’ll have time to ride the second funicular beyond the monastery too!

5. Barcelona in Half a Day on an Electric Bike

a couple enjoy a cycling tour. One of our best tours in Barcelona

Walking tours are fun, but e-bike tours are another kind of fun. If you enjoy seeing even more of a city than you can explore on foot, then a Barcelona e-bike tour is one to consider. You won’t even have to work super hard since e-bikes come with pedal assisted technology to help you cycle easily through the city—hills or no hills.

This tour takes you past the famous Sagrada Família, and through the Gothic Quarter before seeing Olympic Village and Port Vell for incredible views of the Mediterranean. In just half a day, you’ll explore more of Barcelona’s top areas so you can really get to know this beautiful city.

6. Barcelona Scenic Cruises by Sailboat

Group enjoy a cruise, on one of the best tours of Barcelona

Part of the attraction to Barcelona is the warm weather and coastal views which is why cruises are so popular there! While we love historical tours and activities, its nice to take a breather on a sailboat with a cold beverage in hand.

We have partnered with locals who run small group and great cruise experiences along the coast of Barcelona. Many activities include drinks, stops for swimming when the weather is appropriate, and snacks. Check out all our watersport activities in Barcelona!

7. Montserrat Monastery and Horse Riding Tour

a group horseback riding in Montserrat, one of the best tours in Barcelona

A pilgrimage to the Montserrat Monastery should be on any traveler’s list of things to do in Barcelona. How about mixing it with an unforgettable horseriding experience through the unimaginably beautiful grassy valleys, with the high peaks of the Montserrat mountain range in the backdrop?

With this experience, you will do both. You’ll start with an early morning scenic transfer from Barcelona into the Montserrat mountain range, where you’ll be ready to conquer the first big highlight of the day–a horseback riding excursion through the valleys.

Then, continue to the Montserrat Monastery for a guided tour. You’ll visit the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat before exploring the town and returning to Barcelona—a perfect day trip.

FOCUS ON  SUSTAINABILITY

“Gaudi & Modernism Tour”

I had so much fun on this tour! The guides are experienced and funny guys 🙂

“Great Tour!”

Had a lovely tour today with Carlos, very informative and chilled out.

“Fantastic and insightful walking tour”

Riccardo pointed out a lot of things that the average visitor would never have paid attention to.

“Half Day Walking Tour”

We had the most interesting and informative tour of the new and old part of the city. [..]. We only had a short visit to Barcelona and we really felt like we had seen so much – we all highly recommend Carlos and this company.

“Unbelievable”

Wow, I can not speak highly enough of our guide on the Spanish civil war tour, his knowledge was incredible.

Our Clients are our best sponsors.

Amazing Gaudí tour in Barcelona! The best walking tour to date! Patrick was extremely knowledgeable and passionate. The way he talks is super engaging and you wouldn’t even realize when the 2 hours would end. He would make you visualise the whole history behind the place with his wonderful imagery and voice modulations and keep you super interested. Highly recommend!

Excellent walking tour!

We joined the free  Gaudi Walking Tour with Patrick and it was amazing! He explained the history behind many buildings in Barcelona, and even though we aren’t exactly fans of art, he explained the ideas behind the architecture in an incredible way that made us think, wonder and notice details and themes we wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. Patrick  was fascinating, funny, charismatic and we’ll spoken. By far the best guide we’ve had yet. If you get a chance to join a tour, go with  Patrick , he’s well worth your while 🙂 Thanks  Patrick !!

The Walking Tour is a Must!

I’m usually a bit of a critic with free tours… normally Id say I expected a bit more of history / commentaries from my guide, but this was so not the case.  Patrick  was an AMAZING GUIDE! Soooooo full of knowledge about history, and although he’s not an artist or an architect, he explained everything with so much passion it almost seemed like he was. Hightly reccomend this tour, otherwise you might go through Barcelona without understanding what’s just in front of your nose.

Bonus points for  Patrick’s  british accent and sense of humor!

Thank You Patrick!

We had a great tour with  Patrick . This tour begins at 11:00 am, unlike most of the other free  Gaudi tours. It lasted 2 and a half hours which flew by as was compact with in-depth reviews of many buildings. P atrick   was very engaging and  knowledgeable about the area and was able to keep all different ages in our group entertained 🙂 would 100% recommend to others

Truly impressive!

Patrick was an absolutely fantastic guide, his passion for and deep understanding of Barcelonas history and architecture made for a wonderful tour. Extremely informative, by far the best tour I can remember going on. Would greatly recommend!

An excellent way to spend a morning! We had an excellent tour of the Barcelona Architecture with Patrick. The tour was intimate (only 6 people) and by the end I felt I had come to personally know him. Patrick knew the history down to the last detail, and while this may seem like a daunting task to comprehend, the storytelling methods employed made me feel like I had been there to experience it myself. I highly recommend this tour if you want a great understanding of not only the architectures of Barcelona, but the personal stories behind them as well!

Testimonial, what they say about us.

Marta was our tour guide. She was funny and made learning about Sagrada Família very interesting. The tour was the perfect length of time; the information she included was exactly what I wanted to know and more. I would highly recommend taking a tour and using this company - ask for Marta if you can!

Carles was a fantastic guide when our family of 4 from Sydney visited Sagrada Familia back in July. He eased the stress of being a tourist at one of the most visited sites in Europe and we really learnt a lot and enjoyed our experience.

Marta was a fantastic tour guide. She was funny and informative and perfectly paced the tour. We were lucky to get into her group. I wish we had time for her to give us a full tour of Barcelona!

Our guide, Marta, was great! She was very informative with her own twist! Would highly recommend. Such a beautiful and unforgettable basilica.

Very nice guide and interesting tour in Park Guell!!

Joseph is a great guide!! Gives information about Park Guell and really funny!

Hasiel was incredible in helping me onto another tour when i missed my booked one. Went way beyond what was neccessary. Really great tour. Our guide was amazing and Park Guell should not be missed by anyone visiting barcelona. Completely awe inspiring! Thank you, Jennifer

Thanks Georgina! We despaired of being able to see the Park Guell during our trip: tickets sold out, tight schedules, long queues. Georgina, good, nice, prepared. It costs a little, but it's really worth it and keeps what it promises.

Barcelona - Private Travel

So alive and colorful and eye-catching, Barcelona is an astonishing mix of heritage, hutzpah, and hospitality, the jewel of Catalonia on the northeast coast of Spain. With socio-economic strides that have catapulted it into global-city status, Barcelona is one of the most important cultural, financial, and tech-forward centers in southern Europe – happy to share its stylish and uninhibited life with all who visit.

Barcelona has come a long way since its humble beginnings. The city’s true lesson in architecture spans more than two millennia, moving from the old stone city walls through Gothic laneways and medieval cathedrals to the modern treasures of Antoni Gaudí, including the famously unfinished La Sagrada Familia and the brilliant Casa Batlló in the heart of the city. Architecture shares the spotlight with equally and thrillingly unconventional art from the likes of Pablo Picasso

and Joan Miró. Lazy days at the beach swimming or paddling or hopping on a harbor cruise will pair perfectly with afternoons exploring the abundant gardens or shopping the high streets. Strolling along the cafés and kiosks of the iconic, tree-lined La Rambla boulevard gives way to sunset cocktails in the Latin Quarter. The dining, from the traditional Catalan cooking of

the eclectic tapas bars and seafood taverns to the city’s 22 Michelin-star restaurants, is nothing short of delectable. Finding your luxury hotel in Barcelona is simply a matter of heading to the core and checking into the exquisite El Palauet or the rarified Mandarin Oriental, both located in the most privileged part of town: Passeig de Gràcia. Before sunset, be sure to fit in a siesta: Barcelona stays up late, the bars not filling up until midnight, right around the same time you might be ordering dessert. Leave room for the flamenco: The rhythm here is unmistakable – and it is all in the hips.

What is the most memorable vacation you have planned for a client? A ladies' food and shopping trip across Italy, including Rome, Lake Como, Sorrento, Cinque Terre and Portofino. It was such a fun trip to plan from beginning to end and the ladies enjoyed every minute of it and planned to do it again!

Natalie Thomson

What is the most memorable vacation you have planned for a client? I booked a group of 14-16 people on a Uniworld River Cruise, who wanted to include a cycling trip. What Free Walking Tour to Take in Barcelona, Spain

O ne of the best ways to quickly get to know a city you are visiting for several days is to take a free walking tour when you first arrive. Especially across Europe, there are a handful of companies that provide free walking tours in different cities.

These free tours provide a more interactive and historical approach to a city than you would normally get just walking around with a printed travel guide.

Barcelona, Spain has an endless list of places and museums to visit and photograph. To get a better overview of the city we joined the free walking tours with Generation Tours .

➳ Find all:   Hotels in Barcelona

The Best Free Walking Tours in Barcelona:

What you will visit in the free tour of barcelona:.

The first walking tour we took is the free walking tour of Barcelona . Our tour guide was named Alvi, an amazing history and food enthusiast. The tour starts at 10:30AM or 3:00PM daily, on the steps of the Gothic Cathedral on Pla de la Seu.

Plaça Sant Felipe Neri

The Saint Felipe Neri Plaza is a small and quiet square near the Gothic Cathedral. The square boast a church, hotel, beautiful fountain in the middle.

This plaza has important history from the Spanish civil war. During a bombing of the city, a bomb fell in the square and did not immediately explode. The church also runs a school, so after the bomb fell, everyone tried running to a nearby bunker. As the schoolchildren were running by, the bomb exploded, killing two adults and 40 kids

The plaza is also featured in Woody Allen’s film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Mount Taber is the home to the first Roman settlement in the city. The term mount is used loosely, as it is only 16.9 meters above sea level. Don’t get too tired on the hike up.

At the summit you can see some 2000 year old Columns of the Temple of Augustus Barcelona, in a very small courtyard.

Baixada de Santa Eulalia

Saint Eulalia is the co-patron saint of Barcelona, who according to the story, at age 13 was tortured and killed for being catholic.

Legend has it that this street is where Saint Eulalia was rolled down a hill in a wine barrel full of glass and nails. When she was taken out of the barrel at the bottom alive, it was decided to finally kill her.

With an interesting history, it is now just a street with a hill.

Plaça del Rei

The King’s Plaza is primarily surrounded by the Grand Royal Palace. Home to the Kings of Aragon, which features one giant room the size of the palace, used for state presentations.

It is remembered as the center of the Spanish Inquisition, where public killings would take place.

Plaça de Sant Jaume

Town Hall of Barcelona, Spain

St James Square is the center of old city Barcelona. It served as a Roman forum 2000 years ago, and to this day serves as the center of laws for the region, with the Palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the City Hall on either side.

Castellers (Human castle)

Monument to the Castellers

Human castles are the most well known Catalan sport. Groups work together to build the tallest human tower. The small child on the top of the tower needs to show four fingers, for four red stripes on the Catalan flag.

The main Castellers event takes place on September 24th, with teams from around the region competing to have the tallest and best built tower.

To Catalonia, this sport represents themselves. It stands for solidarity of the region. There are many people holding up the few on top, along with the youngest member of the group on top.

Carrer Avinyó

The Carrer Avinyó is one of the oldest streets in the center of Barcelona. During the 19th century it was the center of the Bohemian lifestyle within the city. It is now home to many boutiques and great cafes and restaurants.

Pablo Picasso’s father taught at the School of Fine Arts that used to be open there. The arts school building now sits unused, until there is money for the city to pay for renovations. This street is where Picasso was truly influenced.

Carrer de la Mercè

Carrer de la Mercè  3 was home to the  Picasso family from 1896 to 1904. The street used to be highlight of bar and tapas in the city, but has declined in recent years.

Nearby is La Tasca del Corral, known for its custom vermouth. We were told to ask for the  Alvi special (The name of our tour guide), he didn’t say what it was though.

What you will see in the Free Gaudi and Modernism Tour:

The second free walking tour we took was about the influence of Gaudi and the modernism movement on the city of Barcelona. The tour also starts at the steps of the Gothic Cathedral at 2:30PM daily.

To read more about Antoni Gaudi, check out our  8 must see Gaudi buildings in Barcelona post.

4cats Restaurant

4cats Restaurant has operated in one way or another since 1897. It became the meeting place for the artists at the center of modernism. The building itself also exemplifies modernist architecture.

On modernist buildings the underside of the balconies are covered in tiles. The more colorful the tiles are, the richer the owner was. Also, the building always had dragons incorporated somewhere.

Palau de la Música Catalana

The Catalan Music Palace was built as a landmark in the cultural and social life of Catalonia finished in 1908. The stained glass ceiling entirely illuminates the entire theatre by daylight. Therefor shows had traditionally taken place in the afternoon.

The building is covered in many mosaics inside and out.

Our tour guide said that the narrow streets around the music hall are home to many good food joints.

Passeig de Gracia

Passeig de Gracia is described as the Champs de Lycee of Barcelona. It is now home to many global upscale business and expensive properties. The Art Nouveau style benches that line the street were originally heated with coal in the winters, like an oven.

Along the street there is a block with three houses in a row by different famous modernist architects.

  • Casa Lleó-Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner
  • Casa Mulleras by Enric Sagnier
  • Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch
  • Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí

Casa de les Punxes

This large Gothic castle is a beautiful building on the outside. It is a private non-profit building, so you must enjoy this one from the outside!

La Sagrada Familia

The last stop on the walking tour was at Gaudi’s most famous work, La Sagrada Familia church . For our complete review of this architectural masterpiece, check out our Gaudi guide .

Backpacker Night Out

For evening fun, Generation Tours also hosts a Generations Night Out pubcrawl. The night began at GaelicBCN, a small bar, with one tapas and beer or sangria.

The event cost €15/person, but if you pre-order the tickets at the end of the walking tour, you get an additional drink and tapas.

We then took the metro to a small bar near the water. It was a quieter bar, to talk to the others in the group for an hour or so. You get a free shot in the way in and out.

We walked to a more happening bar, where we made a quick stop for another free shot.

Our night, we ended at the  Shoko Barcelona nightclub. The one downside of this club from our experience is the bathroom. Even by 1am, relatively early for nightlife in Spain, the bathroom was not a pretty sight.

Regular entry to Shoko is €12 for 1 drink, €18 for 2, and €24 for 3. So, if you would like to end your night at the club, going on this pubcrawl is totally worth it.

Other than that, I would suggest this pubcrawl if you are looking for an adventure out at night, but do not have any friends in Barcelona to do it with. If you have your own group, go out on your own, set your own pace and have fun!

For Barcelona without the crowds try Spain’s hidden gem – it costs just £64 to get there

Calella beach village aerial skyline in Barcelona Catalonia Mediterranean sea

Spain is undoubtedly a beautiful country, with popular hotspots including Costa Brava and Barcelona, but have you heard of the hidden gem Calella?

Described on TikTok as ‘heaven’, the holiday capital of Costa del Maresme rivals its more well-known neighbours Lloret de Mar and Barcelona for a relaxing escape with beautiful beaches, Spanish restaurants and plenty of history.

It’s also a thrifty holiday choice as the average pint is just £1.94. According to Hikers Bay , you can get a three-course meal for two people for less than £30. This almost doubles if you go to Barcelona, where it’s about £52.

If you do want to visit the legendary Barcelona for its cathedrals, beaches and history, it’s just over an hour on the train and will cost you around £5.

Be warned, though: Barcelona is much busier, visited by approximately nine million tourists each year.

Comparatively, Calella rakes in a more moderate 250,000 visitors per year — so you likely won’t be fighting over sunbeds here.

Things to do in Calella

If you love the beach, you’re in luck: Playa de Calella stretches from one edge of the town to the other, with a promenade lined with dozens of bars and cafes.

Meanwhile, Playa del Garbi has a basketball court, nine volleyball pitches, two beach football pitches, nine volleyball pitches and even an offshore waterpark.

Dating back to 1856, the famous lighthouse is a symbol of the city and is open to the public six days a week.

Just below is the much quieter Playa de les Roques (beach of the rocks), where you can relax in peace, swim or even snorkel.

Calella lighthouse

For culture, there are lots of beautiful churches to visit, including the Church of Santa María and San Nicolás, dating back to the 16th century. It’s also home to a ginormous bell tower that you can see from most of the city.

If you wish to escape the heat, Dalmau Park is a great place to relax under shady trees. If you visit on the first weekend of June, you’ll get to experience the Sardana celebration and Historic Catalan folk dances.

If you love shopping you can take advantage of the promenade which boasts over 500 shops and stalls, all in one straight line. Similarly, the municipal market is a local flea market that happens every Saturday morning.

And, of course, you can expect fantastic Mediterranean food in any of the town’s many tapas bars, brasseries and seafood restaurants.

How to get to Calella

The closest airport to Calella is Girona, but it’s easier to fly from Barcelona.

Flights on Skyscanner are as low as £64 from London.

Beach at seaside in Calella in Catalonia, Spain near Barcelona. Scenic old town with sand beach and clear blue water. Famous tourist destination in Costa Brava, perfect place for holiday and vacation

When to visit Calella

Calella’s hottest months are July and August, with average temperatures at 23C rising to 29C at its peak.

If you prefer more manageable temperatures, the average temperature in May and October is 17, rising to 23C at its hottest.
