Glaze of glory: Close to 1,000 cyclists expected for return of Tour de Donut in Staunton

The 34-mile ride includes two 'donut stops' where cyclists can get time deducted for the number of donuts eaten.

Sean Walker of Springfield returned a couple of weeks ago from the Denver Post Ride the Rockies Bicycle Tour .

There, Walker was with about 2,500 cyclists in his first big ride after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are all just itching to ride with people and to be together and to be a unit again, to enjoy each other's company and to have the discussion and to meet old friends," Walker said recently.

On Saturday, Walker and his wife, Jennifer Ronen Walker, will be on more familiar footing when the Tour de Donut returns to Staunton after a year's absence. Nearly 1,000 cyclists are signed up, according to race officials.

The couple has been riding in the Tour de Donut since 2014, though Sean Walker started racing in it competitively in 2016. Sean Walker is from Gillespie, and Jennifer Walker is from Hillsboro.

For most cyclists, though, it is "the fun of the event," a spoof on the Tour de France , said race director Christian Hasselberg .

There are two donut stops on the 34-mile rolling route. Cyclists get five minutes deducted from their overall race times for each donut eaten and recorded.

Hasselberg said the race will go through 500 dozen donuts, glazed only.

"I don't know how it happened, but we became over the years one of the largest bike rides in the area," Hasselberg said. "Maybe because it was quirky and unique. We don't take ourselves too seriously."

Hasselberg admitted "cabin fever" may be spiking the numbers this year.

"Wild Travels," a travel series celebrating the uniqueness of America in its "unusual, eccentric and downright quirky people, places and events" and broadcast on PBS stations in 170 markets, will be in Staunton documenting the event on race day, Hasselberg said.

Staunton is about 50 minutes south of Springfield.

Sean Walker, an account executive for Kelly Services , has pocketed a pair of fourth-place finishes in the competitive division racing for SLF MotionRacing.

Walker and his wife started out doing the Tour de Donut like most everyone else: to hang out with friends and have fun. While both are from the Staunton area, neither came into cycling until about a decade ago.

"We did our first ride in 2014," Sean Walker, 51, recalled. "At that time, I still had my hybrid bike, and we ate the donuts and had a blast. I didn't even know there was a (competitive) race, and it wasn't in my range."

The first year he raced competitively in the Tour de Donut, Walker and some friends got stuck more than a block back from the starting line, where the serious racers had congregated.

"We were stuck with the donut eaters," joked Walker, who still worked his way back to a top 20 finish.

Walker said it was Jennifer Walker who brought bicycles home one day for the two to ride in neighborhood.

ICYMI: Old Capitol Blues & BBQ returns, along with Big Head Todd & the Monsters

The next summer, Walker did his first triathlon, then made a jump to a road bike from a hybrid bike.

"I fell in love with it," Walker admitted. "There are some things in your life you walk into, and you don't know you're good at. I was a natural on the bicycle, for whatever reason. I took to it like Forrest Gump to the army."

Walker connected with a group from BikeTek and started "asking all sorts of questions." When someone suggested he hook up with a racing team, Walker innocently asked if people really raced bikes.

They did, and he did. For the last several years, he's raced for Blake Young's racing team out of Pawnee.

A recovering alcoholic, Walker said cycling has changed his life for the better.

"My whole life is wrapped around it now," Walker said, "from training in the off season to racing. What I have learned is that it's easier to replace your addiction with another addiction that's more quality than it is to fight it out and not change things.

"Before I started all this, it was two to three bottles of wine daily before I could go to sleep, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This is so good for my brain. I'm an executive, and I'm in sales, and I've been in leadership positions most of my career. When I'm out riding, I can float off in your mind, and I can think about things. That's when I work on my sales pitches and work on leadership issues. I call it going down a worm hole.

"The next thing I know, I get off the bike, and I'm like, oh cool, I've solved some problems."

Jennifer Walker leads a group ride for the Springfield Bicycle Club and has worked with new cyclists trying to overcome weight gain.

One over-the-road truck driver, Walker recalled, was "tired of being unhealthy" and bought a bike before joining her group.

"The more you talk with the cycling community, a lot of people do get on bikes to lose weight or combat a dependency or what not," she said.

Jennifer Walker, 47, said she felt inhibited by technology — tied to her job as a graphic designer and constantly on social media — and found cycling "freeing" and a way to connect to the outdoors again.

"It's a great stress reliever," said Walker, now the director of communications for the Illinois State Dental Society, "just to do something where you let your hair blow in the wind and you get away from everything else in life."

People posting pictures of themselves wearing their "I Survived the Tour de Donut" T-shirt has become a recent sport of sorts, Hasselberg said. People have posted from Oman and South Africa, he said, and the T-shirt is often a conversation starter.

"Of all the shirts they're going to bring (on vacation), that's the one they want to because it's interesting. It's a ton of fun."

Sean Walker said he's glad the Tour de Donut is back in a lot of ways, though for him, there is no stopping for donuts during the race.

"(In cycling) you're seeing fewer and fewer road races, and the criteria (races) are not growing," he pointed out. "We're losing road races. This being a road race, there is always something to look forward to because you're not going around in circles.

"You've got 34 miles to figure out how you're going to win this thing. It's very strategic.

"The serious racers (don't stop). You go straight through. There are plenty of donuts to eat at the end."

Bikers take off from the starting line at the beginning of the 33rd annual Tour De Donut in Staunton on July 9, 2022. The 34th rendition of the event returns Sat., July 8. Enquirer~Democrat photo by Jackson Wilson.

Race begins at 9 a.m. July 8 in Staunton

By JACKSON WILSON Enquirer~Democrat Reporter

One of Staunton’s most popular events returns for its 34th rendition this weekend.

On Sat., July 8, an expected amount of more than 1,000 bikers will be riding through 34 miles of rural Macoupin County during the traditional Tour De Donut, which has attracted competitors/visitors from all over the country and even around the world.

The main route features two donut stops that are stationed at checkpoints in Mt. Olive (mile No. 6) and Eagarville (mile No. 22). For all who would rather venture a shorter distance, they will have the option of embarking on an alternate 12-mile ride known as the “Donut Hole.”

The donuts will be provided courtesy of Krispy Kreme and are each worth a five-minute race time deduction.

Mixed clouds and sun are in the forecast with a 60 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms expected throughout the day. Humidity levels will be high at around 80 percent but the overall weather will otherwise be ‘rather pleasant’ with a high temperature of 76 degrees and a light breeze ranging from five to 10 mph.

“This is such a fun time,” Tour De Donut director Christian Hasselberg said in a past interview. “It’s nice to see the larger community get together and participate. Plus, I get to try to make everyone’s day in some way and meet a lot of new friends.”

Awards will be presented based on gender, overall times and age groups ranging from 1-15 and 70-99. Participants must be at least 13 years of age to ride with adult supervision. All bikers must wear a helmet.

Registration must be completed online prior to racing day. All who registered before June 15 will be guaranteed a free T-shirt. Merchandise will additionally remain available for everyone else while supplies last.

Free camping with showers will be offered the night before the event in the Staunton city park. Sign-in begins at 7 a.m. the next morning.

The starting/finish line is located in the park at the corner of East Pennsylvania Street and Ash Street.

ANCELL ROLLS TO THIRD TOUR DE DONUT TITLE AT AMERICA’S SWEETEST RACE

tour de donut staunton il

Part bike race, part eating contest, and a hole lot of fun, the 34th Tour de Donut took place 8 July in Staunton, Illinois. Known as America’s Sweetest Bike Race, this old fashion event attracted over 600 riders on a 34-mile route with two donut stops, where a five minute time bonus was awarded for each donut consumed.

It is the only bike race in the world where you are guaranteed to gain weight, if you want to win.

41 year-old Katherine Ancell from nearby Carbondale won her third-in-a-row Tour de Donut title this year. The veteran donut and gravel racer (she finished 7th at Unbound Gravel) completed the 34-mile race in 1:55:03 while also consuming 10 donuts for a 0:50:00 time bonus. Her adjusted winning “donut time” was 1:05:03, earning her 1st-place once again for the women and 7th overall.

The men’s race came down to a battle of the bulge – if you can stomach it. 42-year old donut vacuum Ryan Morge was up against a youthful and speedy Samuel Hancoth, 23. Morge consumed a massive 23 donuts (~4600 calories), with Hancoth only downing 15, but trying to ride at a faster pace.

At the finish, a double glazed and confused Morge (51:46) lost by less than a minute to Hancoth (50:58), with both weird-doughs tired of the hole thing and avoiding press with a “donut disturb” attitude.

59 year-old Scott Shaw opted for the traditional head-down, pedal to the mettle “Donut judge me” weekend gran fondo racer strategy. Although first to cross the finish line in 1:28:10 with an impressive average speed of 24.5mph, he did not down a single donut and finished a distance 20th in what is surely a cruller result.
