Judy Craymer , creator and producer of the much-loved hit musical  Mamma Mia! , is thrilled to announce the 25th Anniversary North American Tour will launch this fall.

The ultimate feel-good show based on the songs of ABBA will open with The Denver Center for Performing Arts and continue on to play 35+ cities across North America including Baltimore and Minneapolis . Additional tour cities and casting will be announced at a later date.

“For the past 25 years, MAMMA MIA! has entertained audiences around the world from London to Broadway to regional productions and on the big screen,” said Craymer. “We could not be more excited for new and returning audiences to experience MAMMA MIA! this upcoming season.”

Since premiering in London in 1999 and on Broadway in 2001, the irresistible musical has captured the hearts of millions around the globe. The sunny, funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads on a Greek island paradise, all unfolding to the storytelling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, has now been seen live on stage by 65 million people across the world and turned into two record-breaking movies – MAMMA MIA! The Movie and MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again.

To date, MAMMA MIA! has been seen in 50 productions in 16 different languages grossing more than $4 billion at the box office.

MAMMA MIA! opened on Broadway in 2001 where it played for what was then a record-breaking 14 years, first at the Winter Garden Theatre, then at the Broadhurst Theatre. The show has had three North American tours prior to this: first in 2000 before the Broadway run, again in 2012, and the latest ending in 2017.

Also produced by Craymer, MAMMA MIA! The Movie became the highest grossing live action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008. A second film, MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again, opened in July 2018 and is the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time. The films starred a host of stars including Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Lily James and Cher.

With music & lyrics by  Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus , MAMMA MIA! is written by  Catherine Johnson , directed by  Phyllida Lloyd  and choreographed by  Anthony Van Laast . The production is designed by  Mark Thompson , with lighting design by  Howard Harrison , sound design by  Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken , and musical supervision, additional material & arrangements by  Martin Koch .

The North American tour is booked by The Booking Group with casting by Tara Rubin Casting.

MAMMA MIA! is produced by Judy Craymer, Richard East & Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal. Amy Jacobs of Bespoke Theatricals is the Executive Producer in association with Work Light Productions.

Theater Review: MAMMA MIA! (25th Anniversary Tour)

Post image for Theater Review: MAMMA MIA! (25th Anniversary Tour)

by Dan Zeff on November 8, 2023

in Theater-International , Theater-Regional , Theater-San Diego

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC

The theater-going public may never get enough of Mamma Mia! Since the Swedish musical opened in London in 1999 there have been 50 productions throughout the world and the international audience now exceeds 65 million. The ABBA-based musical is playing a one week visit to San Diego and judging by the reaction from the full house yesterday, November 7 at the San Diego Civic Theatre , the show has lost none of its appeal, especially for the many groups of young female viewers who cheered every song from “Chiquitta” to “Voulez-Vous.”

tour musical mamma mia

For those who have been out of touch with musical theater for the last quarter of a century, Mamma Mia! unfolds on a Greek island. American expatriate Donna Sheridan operates a small taverna on the island while raising her daughter, Sophie. The narrative revolves around Sophie’s attempt to identify her real father. From reading her mother’s diary, Sophie discovers that her father could be one of three men who had relationships with Donna nine months before Sophie’s birth. Sophie invites the three men — Bill Austin, Harry Bright, and Sam Carmichael — to her wedding, hoping to discover which one is her true dad.

tour musical mamma mia

Agreed, this is a tenuous storyline on which to erect a full-length musical, but book author Catherine Johnson has done a noble job of injecting 22 ABBA songs by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson into her tale. Although all the songs were written separately, Johnson makes them fit naturally into the story. The unaware spectator could easily accept that the songs were actually composed as a cohesive score specifically for the show.

tour musical mamma mia

The ABBA hits are all there, from the title song to “Waterloo,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Money, Money, Money,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “SOS,” and “Take a Chance on Me.” The megahit of the score is “Dancing Queen,” first sung during the opening act and then as the major number in the star-spangled finale. “Dancing Queen” drew a frenzied reaction from the 1999 opening night London audience and immediately cemented Mamma Mia! as a musical that would be around for a long, long time (it is now the sixth longest-running show in West End history).

tour musical mamma mia

What really elevates this production into a genuine must-see show are the performances by Christine Sherrill as Donna and Alisa Melendez (a native of nearby Carlsbad) as Sophie. Both have expressive, powerful voices and strong acting chops and their mother-daughter conflict near the end of the show is stirring and credible. As the three men in Donna’s past, Rob Marnell (Harry Bright), Jim Newman (Bill Austin), and Victor Wallace (Sam Carmichael) do what they can with paper thin roles.

tour musical mamma mia

I had difficulties with Jalynn Steele and Carly Sakolove as Donna’s girlfriends Tanya and Rosie respectively. Granted the characters are in the show primarily for comic relief, but they would be funnier and if they took their feet off the slapstick pedal and just let the comedy flow naturally.

tour musical mamma mia

The show’s motor is driven by Anthony Van Laast’s choreography, a rousing series of production numbers executed with inexhaustible enthusiasm and precision by the youthful chorus. Howard Harrison’s lighting designs created a series of stunning visual images. A seven-piece band laid down a solid soft rock accompaniment. Phyllida Lloyd is the director, Mark Thompson is the production designer, and Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken are the sound designers.

tour musical mamma mia

I have been an unapologetic Mamma Mia! idolator since I first saw the show almost 20 years ago. I have always been impressed with how much more ambitious artistically it was than it needed to be. The production could have coasted solely on the ABBA music and tossed Brown’s story, but then I suspect it wouldn’t have lasted 25 years and counting.

Questions & Answers

What logos can i use during our show.

We're doing Mamma Mia!, and we want to project the Mamma Mia logo on the curtains during seating preshow. Are we allowed to do this? What do we need to do to make this happen?

Am I unable to apply for rights if my school has no auditorium and uses a local theatre to perform our annual musical production?

Mamma mia jr.

I was just curious if there was any plans to make a Jr version of Mamma Mia? I know our theatre would jump at the chance.

Josh (He/They)

I am trying to contact someone in licensing at MTI without any luck. What is the best way for me to contact someone?

Rehearsal tracks.

We are doing Mamma Mia.  Do you have rehearsal tracks available?

Are we allowed to change some of the keyboard scores to wind instruments instead?

Can we transpose 1 or 2 of the keyboard parts with wind instruments as long as they play the same part that the keys would have? If not are we allowed to write our own parts and give them to a wind section?

Production Pro/RehearseScore

If you purchase Production Pro, do you still need RehearseScore?

I thought I saw an option earlier this year for my cast to load their librettos onto their chromebooks for rehearsing. Is this an option and if so, what is it called so I can check it on my MATErIALS page on the contract.  We are about to start Mamma Mia.

Any news on the release date for this shows & do you know if it will be available for schools?

Review: ‘Mamma Mia!’ is a wild ride at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre

April 24, 2024 Gloria Rzucidlo ENTERTAINMENT , Local News , Michigan News , Musical and Opera Reviews , NEWS 0

tour musical mamma mia

Detroit — “Mamma Mia!” hits the Fisher Theater in Detroit from now through April 28.  This smash-hit sensation is based on the book by Catherine Johnson with music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.

Mamma Mia!, the musical, begins on this beautiful Greek island where Sophie (Alisa Melendez) is preparing for her wedding to Sky (Grant Reynolds).  She reads her mother’s diary, Donna ( played by Christine Sherrill) and finds out intimate details of three men who could be her father.  Sam (Victor Wallace), Bill (Jim Newman) and Harry (Rob Marnell).  Sophie believes one of these men could be her father and wants him to walk her down the aisle.  Three months in advance of the nuptials, she sends each an invitation and signs her mother’s name without her mother knowing about it.  All three men accept the invitation.

Donna owns a taverna (guesthouse) on the island and first to arrive are her two best girlfriends who were in a band called “Donna and the Dynamos” back in the 1970’s.

During this time, Sophie gets to know the three men trying to figure out which one is her father.  However, Sam pulls Sophie aside and tells her he’s her father and wants to walk her down the aisle.  Bill tells her that his Aunt Sophia left Donna all her money to build the Taverna.  Now they both think HE’s the father.  Harry is also convinced he’s the father and promises to walk her down the aisle.  By this time, Sophie is more confused than ever.

Act two begins when Sophie has a nightmare where all three men fight over walking her down the aisle.  Sky finds out that she wants a big wedding just to find out which is her father.  He becomes very hurt.

The wedding begins with Donna walking her down the aisle.  Suddenly Sophie stops the wedding and decides she doesn’t want to get married after all.  Sky agrees.  Sam reveals to Donna that he got married long ago and got divorced but never really got over her.  So in a turn of events, Sam marries Donna on the spot.

The musical lasted two hours and 35 minutes with a 15-minute intermission between the two acts.  There was some smoke during certain parts of the performance.  Mamma Mia has been playing on Broadway since 2001, the movie of the same name came out in 2008.  How does it compare?  It is very similar, I would say.  If you haven’t seen Mamma Mia by now, what’s stopping you?  The musical is great, the timeless ABBA songs are great and the dancing and choreography is fantastic.  Some of the ABBA songs include:  “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “The Winner Takes it All,” and “Mamma Mia”.

During the finale, the cast encourages the audience to clap, sing and dance to the more ABBA songs.  What a feel-good show!

Schedule of “Mamma Mia!” performances:

  • Tuesday – Saturday at 7:30 PM
  • Sunday Evening at 6:30 PM
  • Saturday matinee at 2:00 PM
  • Sunday matinee at 1:00 PM

Tickets for the musical Mamma Mia! can be purchased at the Fisher Theater box office at 3011 W. Grand Blvd, Detroit, Michigan, at ticketmaster or broadwayindetroit.com .

A dreamy good ‘Mamma Mia!’ on tour at the Hippodrome in Baltimore

The cult-classic musical was well done by an amazing cast and the performance was beyond enjoyable.

Is this real? The lights, the music, the voices, and the set were so unbelievably well done, I just knew I had to be dreaming it all. Brava to Director Phyllida Lloyd for a wonderfully directed cult-classic musical. I knew I was going to enjoy Mamma Mia! regardless, but this show at the Hippodrome Theatre went beyond all my expectations. I enjoyed it so much that I may return to see it again during its run here in Baltimore.

Mamma Mia! is based on the book of the same name by British playwright Catherine Johnson. There are several adaptations, but nothing compares to watching it live in a beautiful and plush theater. So much went into this performance to make it an experience worth having. The versatile and simple set was magic. Nancy Thun, the associate set designer, has mastered the art of less is so much more. You can appreciate all the details that went into making this an astounding production. The music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus bring a solid foundation to allow the true beauty of each character to come through.

Most of us are familiar with the big numbers in this musical — thank you, ABBA — like “Dancing Queen” and ”Mamma Mia!,” but the smaller numbers were just as good if not better. While I adored the glitzy, shiny costumes that Associate Costume Designer Lucy Gaiger put together — exactly what you expected to see for “Dancing Queen” — each number was special and done with profound care. My favorite duet, “The Winner Takes It All” — sung by Donna exquisitely portrayed by Christine Sherrill and a most talented actor, Victor Wallace, who dreamily played Sam Carmichael — was sheer joy. The emotion that reverberated through the room listening to their voices reach beyond the raptors brought me close to tears. Their chemistry was apparent throughout the show but in this duet, their voices became the epitome of sad, lost love fighting to gain a foothold in the present. The audience was utterly mesmerized by them to the point of a standing ovation.

Darling, precocious Sophie depicted by Alisa Melendez was a treat. Her great voice complemented everyone else in such numbers as “Thank You for the Music” and “I Have a Dream,” but her solos were spellbinding and glorious. She embodied the role of a 20-year-old bride. Her fiancé, Grant Reynolds who represented Sky, was a delight. He was charming, sweet, and the perfect picture of a groom. His voice, while not as indelible as others’, was still solid and enjoyable. His interactions with Sophie were a pleasure to watch.

The aunts were each a firecracker in their own way. Jalynn Steele who played Tanya and Rosie performed by Carly Sakolove were all around amazing and fun to watch. From the dramatic scene watching Tanya blow up the air mattress to watching Rosie chase her man around the chapel, they brought an easy comedic brightness to the show. And both completely took you by surprise with the strength of their voices when they sang. It was like watching a magic trick unfold.

tour musical mamma mia

And we cannot forget the equally delightful “Headbanger” Harry, who was channeled by Rob Marnell, and the adventurous Bill Austin played by Jim Newman. These gentlemen and their antics were brilliant. Their history of the olden days with Donna and their lives before they each moved on was beautiful nostalgia. They each brought to light what made them so special and a respite for a broken-hearted Donna. I loved the men they were and the truth they finally found for themselves. Never judging and always accepting. It’s how we should strive to be.

My only point of contention was the lighting. While it was more often lovely and alluring and laid the base for amazing moments, it was sometimes a bit dark. I understand that central characters need to be highlighted at certain moments and others need to be placed in the shadows, but there were times that everything just seemed to be in shadow, as if the lights in the front were missing. While Lighting Designer Howard Harrison did an astounding job overall, it was a minor distraction that happened at random.

Overall Mamma Mia! was well done by an amazing cast and the performance was beyond enjoyable. This show could easily slide into first place for a great way to spend your money this season. If you have a chance to see it, I say go. You won’t regret it!

Running Time: Two hours and 35 minutes with a 15-minute intermission.

Mamma Mia! plays through April 21, 2024, at the Hippodrome Theatre’s France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, 12 N. Eutaw Street, Baltimore, MD. Purchase tickets ($172.50–$279) online or call 410.837.7400.

Things To Do

Things to do | brighton actress is ‘having the time of my life’ in ‘mamma mia’.

Madison Deadman wasn’t taking a great chance to be part of the latest touring company of “Mamma Mia.”

The Brighton native has been a big fan of the 25-year-old musical, built around songs from the Swedish group ABBA, since she was very young. “My first professional show I ever did in Michigan was at the Encore musical theater company (in Dexter) — ‘Evita’ when I was 12 years old,” Deadman, 27, remembers. “Dan Cooney, the director, asked me, ‘What’s your favorite musical?’ and it was ‘Mamma Mia’ hands down.

“I love the joyousness,” adds Deadman, who saw the 2008 film adaptation before she saw “Mamma Mia” on stage. “I love ABBA music. My mom and dad met in the ’70s at a roller skating rink; they can do all the ’70s skating dance moves, and of course, a lot of that was ABBA. Then we got to see it at the Winter Garden on Broadway, which was the first time I ever got to step foot on a Broadway stage.

“So, yes, (‘Mamma Mia’) has been part of me for a long time. This is kind of a full-circle moment.”

Madison Deadman (Photo courtesy of Madison Deadman)

“Mamma Mia” is, in fact, the first national tour for Deadman, who’s part of the company and understudies for the lead role of Sophie, an about-to-be-married 20-year-old on the fictional Greek Island of Kalokairi who surprises her mother — a former pop star singer — by secretly inviting the three men who might be her father to her wedding.

Deadman’s love affair with theater began when she was “really young,” catching the bug while playing sports and taking dance classes and figure skating while growing up in Brighton. “I loved the performance aspect of all that,” Deadman says now. After seeing a cousin act in a community theater production of “Cinderella,” “I remember pointing to the stage: ‘I want to do this! I want to be up there!’

“It’s always been in me. I was always playing dress-up, always singing. I had a little boom box when I was a little girl that I would bring everywhere. I’d put a Disney karaoke CD in it, and as a ‘gift’ to friends and family, I would sing Disney Princess songs,” she adds, with a laugh.

Deadman’s first time on stage was at 6 years old, playing Gretl in a Howell community theater production of “The Sound of Music.” But it was the “Evita” experience that allowed Deadman to truly entertain the idea of making theater a career.

“I was working with people from New York and seeing that they made a living doing it and were traveling around the country and everything,” she says. “That’s when it hit me: ‘Omigosh, if I’m doing this now, at this stage with people at this caliber, then, yes, I can do this. I can make a living doing what I love.’ So all through high school, that was the plan.”

After a brief time at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, where she also studied nutrition as a backup, Deadman transferred to the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she appeared in “Godspell,” “Home Street Home” and “Rocket Science,” among other shows before graduating in 2020. Deadman also acted in regional productions of “Cabaret,” “Les Miserables,” “The Addams Family,” “Little Women,” “The Miracle Worker” and “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat” before landing her role in “Mamma Mia.”

“It’s been a dream come true, honestly,” says Deadman, whose favorite song in the show is “Chiquitita” during the first act. “This is what I’ve been aiming for for a pretty long time. It comes with a lot of challenges. It’s definitely hard to uproot and be away from home, but I’m doing a show that is full of so much joy and I’m surrounded by great people and a great company.”

Deadman, who resides in Brooklyn with her partner, who she met in Cincinnati, has future dreams in mind, too. She has a list of other shows she’d like to be in, including “Hadestown,” “Six,” “Rent” and “Cabaret” again. “The ultimate goal of all-time is to originate a role in a Broadway show,” she adds.

“I’m just excited about everything that’s coming, even if I don’t know what that’ll be yet. I’m just so happy and so grateful that I’m doing this thing I’ve loved for as long as I can remember. I’m having the time of my life — that’s for sure.”

“Mamma Mia” runs Tuesday, April 23 to April 28 at the Fisher Theatre, 3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit. 313-872-1000 or broadwayindetroit.com.

Two weeks remain in the high school musical season, with two big programs opening shows this weekend.

Archbishop Stepinac opens a two-weekend run of "Catch Me If You Can," the story of Frank Abagnale Jr., the one-step-ahead-of-the-law conman and forger who once called New Rochelle home. Based on the movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, performances will be at 7 p.m., April 26, 27, May 2, 4; 2 p.m., May 5. (Note: There is no performance on May 3.) Next weekend : The season comes to a close next weekend. Stepinac ends "Catch Me If You Can," "Iona Prep" stages "Footloose" (May 3 and 4) and Yonkers Charter School of Educational Excellence marks the return of musicals to Yonkers high schools with a production of "Godspell" (May 3 and 4).

Pedro's Open Mic 2024 : If you missed a show this season, there's still time to catch up, in a way. It's Pedro's Open Mic 2024, a celebration of the season that's soon drawing to a close. The Open Mic will be at Harrison High School at 7 p.m., May 11, and it promises to be a fun night of showtunes, games, trivia and cake, as schools from across Rockland, Putnam and Westchester send singers and dancers to give a taste of what graced their stages. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students at www.tinyurl.com/pedros2024 .

The list of performers is growing, but so far we've got: Rye Neck's "Beauty and the Beast," Hendrick Hudson's "The Little Mermaid," Pleasantville's "Footloose," Haldane's "Chicago," Carmel's "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," Suffern's "Into the Woods," Valhalla's "Footloose," North Salem's "Hello, Dolly!" New Rochelle's "Young Kind of Love," Pelham's "Into the Woods," Blind Brook's "Mamma Mia!," Harrison's "Mean Girls," Walter Panas' "Mamma Mia!," Clarkstown South's "Newsies," White Plains' "Fiddler on the Roof," Iona Prep's "Footloose," and Archbishop Stepinac's "Catch Me If You Can."
