Does Saga offer coronavirus travel insurance cover for the over 50s?

Saga travel insurance now includes standard covid-19 cover should you test positive for coronavirus within 14 days of travel. It also provides cover should your holiday be cut short due to coronavirus, plus up to £10,000,000 of emergency medical expenses and repatriation fees to get you back home.

It's worth mentioning that although no cover can be provided if you travel to a country where the FCDO advise against all travel, Saga are willing to offer cover if the FCDO has advised against all but essential travel. If you travel to a country where the FCDO has advised against all but essential travel, for a non-essential reason, you’ll have no cover in place for any policy section if the reason for your claim is related to why the FCDO advice is in place, for example COVID-19. This is subject to there being no other government restrictions in place prohibiting travel. If you travel for essential reasons, then you will have full policy coverage in place.

How much does Saga travel insurance cost?

The cost of Saga travel insurance depends on the traveller’s age, health and the type of cover required.

Am I eligible for Saga travel insurance?

To be eligible as the policy holder for Saga travel insurance you must be at least 50 years of age however there is no upper age limit. You must live in the UK and disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, or your policy could be invalid.

Saga will only look to provide cover for diagnosed medical conditons therefore if you are under investigation or awaiting test results of an undiagnosed condition, no cover will be available.

Is Saga travel insurance any good?

My review of Saga travel insurance is designed to help you compare plans and find the best option for you. I would always recommend that you review all of your options to ensure you’re getting the best deal that suits your budget and needs.

Saga travel insurance has the highest possible Defaqto rating. It also has a Trustpilot score of 4.6 out of 5 for all its insurance products. This means both customers and consumer champions alike rate Saga travel insurance as excellent.

With no upper age limit and cover for most pre-existing medical conditions, Saga offers comprehensive travel insurance as standard. This means it’s simple to arrange yet still offers flexibility to tailor the policy by changing the excess, adding additional travellers and changing the level of cancellation cover.

Protect your holiday today. Quick quotes from 20 insurers.

Saga offers one, simple travel insurance plan to those over 50 years of age (with no upper age limit) when you buy direct and one different plan (that is cheaper but with less coverage) through comparison sites. We like that Saga includes cover for End Supplier Failure , some catastrophe cover and a higher level of Personal Belongings/Baggage cover on all policies (plus Golf). Another stand-out perk is that travellers whose international flight is delayed more than an hour can benefit from access to a LoungeKey airport lounge (part of Trip Delay cover)—if you bought direct from Saga and not via a comparison site.

Saga Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

Saga keeps the insurance-buying process easy by offering one comprehensive tier of Travel Insurance, and they now offer special cover related to Covid-19. Strong customer reviews make a further case for buying a Saga policy, in addition to some solid features.

Policies include Trip Cancellation, Emergency Medical, Trip Delay/Missed Departure, Legal Assistance, Personal Accident, Personal Belongings and Golf cover. Those who like to ski can add Winter Sports cover for an additional cost. Not surprisingly, the cost of the Winter Sports add on rises quickly with age.

Anyone planning a longer trip can extend the maximum trip length to 90 days, but only if you are travelling outside the U.S.A., Canada, Mexico or any Caribbean Islands. If you’re travelling to those countries then the maximum trip length is 45 days on an Annual, Multi-Trip policy or 120 days under a Single Trip policy.

Those who struggle with sitting in an airport for hours may like Saga's Delayed Flight Assistance, which gives you access to an airport lounge if your international flight is delayed for an hour or more. This feature provides a bit of peace of mind and comfort for international travel—be sure to pre-register your flights with Saga ahead of time to be eligible for this perk—but this is only available on policies bought direct from Saga, not a comparison site.

Those going on a cruise can get cover for cabin confinement, emergency airlift to hospital, missed port and unused excursions. To learn more about market prices please see our article Average Cost of Cruise Travel Insurance UK .

Does Saga Travel Insurance Cover Trips in the UK? Holidays in the UK are covered under Saga policies, so long as you stay in pre-booked holiday accommodation or the accommodation of a relative or friend who resides in the Channel Islands for at least 2 consecutive nights (Annual, Multi-Trip policies only) or 1 night (Single Trip). However, note that some features are not offered for UK trips and coverage limits may be lower.

Pre-Existing Conditions: Saga may be able to offer cover for your pre-existing medical conditions, buy you may pay a higher premium. Pre-existing conditions are only covered if they've been declared by you and accepted by Saga. As part of the online quote process you can declare your conditions to see if cover can be offered, and for what cost.

Over 65s: There is no upper age limit for Saga Travel Insurance policies; there is, however, a lower age limit of 50 years of age. This age limit only applies to the main policy holder—other travellers you add to your policy can be of any age. There is no upper age limit for Winter Sports cover, but Winter Sports premiums will rise with age .

Insuring Other Travellers: Those you’ve listed on your Annual Multi-Trip policy can travel independently (without you) and still benefit from the same cover as you. This cover extension does not apply to Single Trip policies.

Covid Cover: Saga now offer cover for cancellation or abandonment if you receive a positive test result in writing for Coronavirus within 14 days of your trip’s departure date, as well as emergency medical cover and repatriation if you fall ill with COVID-19 while on your trip.

Covid-19 Cover

Saga now offers cover for cancellation or abandonment if you have a positive Coronavirus test result within 14 days of your departure date. Plus you get emergency medical cover and repatriation if you fall ill with Coronavirus while you're on holiday. Read more here about Saga's Covid cover.

Here is a sample of some of the coverage you get (and don't get) for Covid from Saga travel insurance before you travel:

Saga Insurance Customer Reviews

Over 38,000 customers have awarded Saga plc a solid 4.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot . Common themes amongst the comments were good value (cheap prices), easy-to-use website and friendly/knowledgeable staff on the phone lines. This rating reflects Saga as a whole, not just their travel insurance.

Here is a sample of the mostly positive experiences:

"What a quick, simple process. I had been told by friends this was the case and that I should try Saga for travel insurance first. They were absolutely right. I have already recommended Saga to my partner. In, fact, I would recommend Saga to anyone who asks." "I got my requested travel insurance at a fair price. I did have a bit of trouble with the web site, which might have been due to a poor connection. I used the 'chat' feature and got prompt and helpful advice." "I was so relieved that Saga made the application for travel insurance quite easy to do. I panicked when it directed me to open my banking app but I was successful with their directions and it was approved. I’m not that good on the internet and am 75 years old but got this done so am very happy." "Just organised travel insurance through Saga. So easy. Competitive pricing. Covers exhausting health issues. Excellent Service from Samuel. Have a policy that caters for my needs. It was easy to purchase. Samuel gave me sound advice. He was patient and courteous. Excellent customer service all round. I do have other insurance products with Saga. I do recommend their services both to family and friends. Thank you Samuel. You were outstanding. Good luck in your future career with Saga" "Fantastic service all round and great prices." "Excellent, as ever. Always good price and great service." "Brilliant trustworthy and always give the maximum help when you contact them. I will never change back to other insurers.... you need someone who really has your best interests at heart when things are difficult and are prepared to really listen and give support in any form. Top rating and then some!!" "I have tried to ring them 9 times, waiting in the phone for over 35 mins. Sent emails asking for someone to ring, that was 3 weeks ago, still waiting!" "We made a claim earlier this year for the theft of luggage on the travel policy. The amount offered in settlement we believe was unrealistic and unfair. After lodging a complaint and receiving a decision from Collinson Insurance, who act for SAGA we have made no progress towards a increased settlement figure. Perhaps we should have insured with Zurich as our traveling companions did who made a virtually identical claim and received a prompt and realistic settlement to their claim. Not recommended." "We had a travel insurance policy with SAGA Services, which we had to claim under due to C-19 in April 2020. On 11th June 2020, SAGA agreed the claim, by email, in full and promised to pay the amount due within 5 days. After 6 days we called them as no money had been received , they confirmed the claim and apologized for the delay. After 10 days we called back and they then said they had made an error , and despite them having sent an email agreeing the claim they were no longer going to pay it, as it had been an error. Since then I have written to the CEO's office twice and received two letters claiming it isn't their problem , as the mistake is with the insurance company. In short you can't rely on anything they say..."

Saga Travel Insurance Prices

While travellers of any age can get a Saga travel insurance policy, premiums rise significantly as travellers age—especially for worldwide coverage including the USA. To get an understanding of how age affects prices, we gathered sample quotes of Saga Travel Insurance across various age groups (50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 years of age).

Insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to your individual details, so please just use the pricing data in this article for general educational purposes only; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation to quotes listed here.

chart showing Saga multi-trip travel insurance prices for those 50, 60, 70 and 80 years old

Premiums with Pre-Existing Conditions

Travellers with Pre-Existing Conditions will pay more for travel insurance, in nearly all cases. The additional premium will depend on a lot of factors, such as your age, the geographic coverage (e.g. it's more expensive to cover medical conditions in USA than Europe), type of pre-existing condition (some are riskier than others), health history (e.g. were you a smoker? are you on new medication?), etc. Trips to Europe are more cost effective than the USA, when you have pre-existing conditions.

For instance, our data analysis of prices from the Saga website shows that common conditions of high blood pressure and cholesterol cost 38% or 51% more for a 70 year old going to France or the USA, respectively. And for someone who's had a heart attack, stent and heart bypass, the premium increases are 74% and 151%, respectively.

How Expensive is Saga Travel Insurance with Pre-Existing Conditions?

How much does winter sports add-on cost.

The cost of Winter Sports cover practically doubles with every decade of age. While Saga will sell Winter Sports cover to you regardless of age, it doesn't come cheap, especially for older travellers to North America. For instance, we found that Winter Sports cover for an 80-year old heading to Aspen would cost over £500.

After reading through the Saga travel insurance policy documents, we feel these are the most notable features. In addition, standard features like Medical and Personal Liability are also included on Saga policies, limits for which can be found below . For more complete details like inner limits and exclusions, please see the policy documents .

Types of Saga Travel Insurance Policies

Saga offers one level of travel insurance cover when you buy direct, and they offer one level of cover when you buy from a comparison site—but the limits vary between these two options. Policies bought direct are expected to be more expensive, because they have higher cover limits across many categories.

Regardless of where you buy, you can purchase as an Annual, Multi-Trip policy or a Single Trip policy.

Saga Single Trip: Saga Single Trip travel insurance covers trips up to 120 days abroad.

Saga Annual Multi-Trip: Saga Annual, Multi-Trip policies cover trips up to 45 days in length (with the option to extend to 60 or 90 days on policies excluding travel to USA, Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean Islands). Within each policy year, you can travel as many time as you want provided your total time abroad doesn’t exceed 120 days.

You can add Winter Sports and Hire Car Excess Waiver cover to all policies; Golf is already included as standard. Note, policies have lower limits/fewer features for UK-based holidays .

Cover Limits for Policies Bought Direct (Single & Annual Multi-Trip)

Cover limits for optional winter sports travel insurance (direct policies only), cover limits for saga golf travel insurance (included).

Please read some of our Travel Insurance Guides if you're trying to decide between Single Trip or Multi-Trip policies, learn about What May Not be Covered by Travel Insurance or decide if you Need Travel Insurance or Not .

How does Saga Travel Insurance Compare to Competitors?

To better understand the value of Saga travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

Saga Travel Insurance vs Direct Line Travel Insurance

Direct Line Travel Insurance

Direct Line travel insurance plans include cover for End Supplier Failure and Natural Disasters, plus cover for the replacement cost of used points or miles in case of Cancellation/Curtailment for a trip bought with air miles or another rewards structure . While prices are a bit higher than average, according to our analysis, you are getting these extra cover features. One surprising extra is Baggage—you'll need to pay extra to cover your personal belongings as they're not included as standard. There is an upper age limit of 75 years old for Direct Line Multi-Trip policies; there is no upper age limit on Single Trip policies.

Bottom Line: If you book trips with miles, Direct Line might offer better cover since they reimburse for used miles/points if your trip is cancelled or curtailed.

Saga Travel Insurance vs AXA Travel Insurance

AXA Travel Insurance Review

In our opinion, AXA travel insurance offers solid cover for reasonable prices. Insolvency, Baggage, Cancellation/Delay/Curtailment and Catastrophe are included on all plans. Single trip policies an upper age limit of 80 years; the age limit for travellers on multi-trip policies is 75 years old. There is no upper age limit for Winter Sports cover, other than the policy age limits mentioned above. AXA is another provider for which you can select your pre-existing conditions online without calling in to customer service.

Bottom Line: AXA might be another solid option for travellers in their 50s, 60s and 70s, who can benefit from a simply online system for notifying of pre-existing conditions.

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to share your review. We're sorry to hear about your booking experience, but we're pleased to hear that our agents were able to help you confirm your holiday, We hope you have a wonderful time, Best Wishes, Nick Saga Travel

Solo Traveller

My husband is unable to travel so I wanted a week away with no hassle on my own. The booking procedure took over a week before confirmation as they said they had to contact the hotels first. Emails etc should not take this long. I wanted to take the Saga insurance but when I said I took a very low dose antidepressant they said they could not insure me! As a company dealing with older people I am sure most of them would be taking lots of medications. All this procedure has taken 2 weeks and has really taken the shine off booking a holiday.

Hi, Thanks for sharing your feedback. We're really sorry to hear about your experience. Your comments are valuable to us as these help us to identify areas for improvement. We do hope you have a fantastic holiday, Best Wishes, Nick Saga Travel

The actual holiday in Madeira was good BUT

The actual holiday in Madeira was good. Quality of hotel was first class. The problem was with the "based at home" Saga customer care. Originally booked six months in advance to fly BA from Heathrow. E mail received 13 days before we fly to say now Easy Jet from Gatwick at 11.00 am. Told by "care" team BA could not accommodate the group. Told change was insignificant as both airports are in London. Received another email 4 days before we fly that time of departure was now 07.00. At his point not travel documents had been received. Care person had no idea why but said a manger would phone later that day. No phone call received. Tried second time and a phone call from manager to explain would be made. No phone call or any contact. Fortunately our taxi service were flexible and able to change travel times. The Saga group (Only 14 of us) arrived in Madeira all with the same experience. In fact one lady received change of flight time the day before departure by letter. She was not on internet but had a phone. Having arrived at airport and exchanged stories we could not find the Saga/ Titan representative. After waiting 15 minutes I phoned the Titan emergency number and asked where our transfer was. Told he would look into it. He phoned back to say transport would be there in a further 30 minutes. By this time the easyJet holiday group and jet2 groups had long gone. Taxis arrived and taken to hotel. The Saga rep was waiting for us to explain that Saga had not informed her of the late change in flight time!! Not a good preparation for a short stress free break in the sun. Fortunately the hotel was of a good standard and no further issues. Not sure what has happened to Saga with this level of customer care and quality of service. They seemed to be unable to cope with the arrangements even though only 8 of us in group. After response from Saga sent details as requested but email address did not work and delivery error message received!! Sent details via their customer care website and awaiting response

We used Saga's bespoke travel service to arrange a trip to India's Golden Triangle followed by a stay in Goa. Our contact was Martin Johnson who was very helpful, communicated well and offered some good advice. The whole trip was well organised they listened to our criteria and delivered on every part of it. The company they used in India were excellent and the driver and guides were smart punctual, helpful and made the whole trip enjoyable.

The Wild India tour is a small group

The Wild India tour is a small group. There were 19 of us, plus the tour manager, Rachit Singh. He was possibly the best Tour Manager we have ever had (and we’ve done quite a few Titan/Saga trips): professional, personable, very knowledgable, attentive, kind and caring. He was not only a brilliant organiser, but an expert naturalist too. Perfect for this holiday.

There are too many questions and it…

Unfortunately my complete response was not included as i gave a very positive review. Have travelled several times with Saga Solo holidays and they have been excellent. There are though too many questions and it took far too long. I am sure that all of these questions are not needed. This is what made me ignore the first request.

A Great Representative of Saga Holidays

This is my first holiday booking with SAGA and I was delighted to be connected with Alison who was extremely helpful, kind, understanding and professional. Out of Africa

We have just returned from In the Footsteps of Livingstone tour. Saga were helpful all the way through and our tour was fantastic value for money. Our guide Joanne Nell was friendly, helpful and cheerful from the moment she met us. She was dressed smartly, very professional and no questions were too much for her. Our drivers were also friendly and smartly dressed and on time. Would recommend the tour with Saga/Titan and Joanne to anyone

Book with Saga by phone

Book with Saga! Their cruises are excellent, as are the crew. The telephone booking service is good too but that on the website is beyond awful. Avoid it and speak to a human.

Wonderful Costa Rica.

Well organised from beginning to end. Great tour manager, lovely tour group, wonderful places to stay and visit. Humberto and Jose looked after us so well, we always felt safe and well informed and the organisation was impeccable. There were a couple of hiccups, we had no water in our room for a day which Humberto helped us sort out and our air con packed up in a different resort which was resolved very quickly. We are planning on a return visit in a couple of years.

I travelled to India with Titan…

I travelled to India with Titan holidays recently and can’t wait for the next trip. All arrangements very good before we left and pick up to and from home to the airport a real bonus. Our tour manager, Alex Becerra was exceptional and his attention to detail was superb. Our Indian Tour guide Rahul Tiwira was excellent with limitless knowledge. The two made an awesome duo who covered every eventuality with grace, kindness and efficiency. India was magnificent and well worth a visit. Highly recommend Alex and Titan.

Single travellers beware

Whilst Saga promise, and deliver, very good holidays, the booking process, particularly for single travellers is a nightmare. Unless you’re able to decide years in advance that you want to go on holiday, you’re unlikely to get a single room. And even if you do the single supplements are always huge. I get so fed up being penalised just because I’m single.

Loss of personal property

I lost my reading glasses on holiday and made a claim for replacement on return. I completed form for loss of personal property which asked for about 4 items as proof. I provided two items- receipt and glasses prescription. My claim was declined because I didn't provide a police report. If a police report is essential for loss of property then it should be stated on the policy.

Our tailor made holiday to Costa Rica…

Our tailor made holiday to Costa Rica with Saga was amazing. Lacey O'Neill our travel expert put our itinerary together from the information we had given regarding the places we wanted to visit. From start to finish the arrangements were spot on the hotels were in excellent locations. All the tours were just right particularly enjoyed the thermal springs in La Fortuna and Monteverde cloud forest. Wildlife and nature was a joy to see. Although we saw wildlife and birds in the National Parks it is all around you in every little corner you visit. Our time on the Pacific coast was wonderful. Costa Rica is a must. 🙂 🦥🌞🙈

Let Down by Saga, AGAIN

It is now almost a month since I wrote a negative review about Saga. I received an immediate response asking me to contact Saga Customer Services, which I did straight away. As I expected, I have received absolutely NOTHING from them. This company is worse than useless and Customer Services don't seem to have a clue what their role is. The word 'service' is clearly not part of their vocabulary. As I wrote previously, I will never use the company again, for anything.

Beware trying to book anything online…

Beware trying to book anything online with Saga. My online holiday booking was not successful because of website issues, and was only resolved after I called Saga, after waiting for well over 2 weeks for them to call as promised. If you happen to be lucky to have a successful booking, don't rely on being able to see any details of your holiday bookings in your MySaga personal account. I have 2 holidays booked and paid for with the company, but they tell me they are unable to fix the problems with their website that results in me being unable to view or access my bookings in the MySaga personal account!! How is this acceptable in 2024??

“multitrip insurance cancelled after claim - no refund”.

Having a multi trip policy with them, we were surprised that when we made a claim, they cancelled the remaining 8 months without refund, which is not an industry standard

“Don't use Saga ”

written by wised2023sagamug on 14/06/2023

COLLINSON Insurance handle any claims for ASTRENKSA. Cannot be contacted on phone. Do not answer emails. Saga no help. And use no one else Since extra information they asked for sent 24 May. No contact, won't answer phone or confirm recorded delivery letters. Luckily Post office confirmed delivery. Always used Saga travel insurance. But when I needed to claim, found the policy to be useless. Saga no help. Says Collinson short of staff. See reviews on COLLINSON Insurance company BE WARNED as YOU COULD HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS.

“Saga what a sham”

written by Clive748 on 28/03/2023

We booked our annual holiday insurance through Saga. Booked on line all seemed quite simple to do so and cost ok. Unfortunately the night before we were to travel, catch a flight myself and my wife fell ill. It was now 3am and we were leaving 5.30am to travel to airport. well that was not happening as we both were sneezing, coughing and had a temperature and generally felt awful. Later that day I thought i better inform Saga! Well that was a task! filled an online report in which took forever, well felt like when your unwell. finally spoke to a call member who totally agreed we had done the right thing and not travelled. then within an hour received an email back from Saga stating we should have travelled as we did not have any medical advice stating we were unfit to travel!! were in 3 in the morning do you get to see a doctor normal waiting time 4 weeks sorry saga you are a joke.

“Inflexible”

written by Bwanabolts on 08/09/2021

Took out single-trip insurance, one-week Sep this year Holiday subsequently deferred 12-months Because this took the holiday date outside the 12-month window of my insurance cover, SAGA would not 'cut and paste' the one-week cover into the new date (LV was happy do do that - twice!) Deferments, a hazard of our times which SAGA has not yet embraced I reluctantly accepted a 75% rebate I asked, what if I booked a holiday today in 2023 and wanted cover now (cancellation)? Told, can't book single-trip insurance now; wait until the holiday date is covered by a 12-month window Or annual, well, book a year (first for 2022, which will cost a fortune and be unused), then another for 2023 to cover the actual holiday! I won't return Plenty of other GOOD insurers out there who know the meaning of flexibility in these difficult times

“Waste of time”

written by jfAdkins303 on 23/10/2020

Having been reassured over the telephone that should our trip to France be cut short due to France being placed on the quarantine list, we would be covered because we took the policy out before the pandemic started, we discovered that this was not the case. The response from SAGA was that because the government did not advise holiday makers to come home straight away it was our 'disinclination to stay' and therefore not covered. Both myself and my husband had to return to our jobs otherwise we would not get paid and our girls had to return to school. This was not a choice or a disincliation, we were forced to curtail the holiday due to the quarantine restrictions imposed by the government. The cover was not cheap either.

“No flexibility for Covid restrictions on travel insurance”

written by on 24/09/2020

When the whole country went into Covid lockdown in March 2020 I called Saga to ask for an extension on my travel insurance policy (due to expire end of Sept 2020). My rational was that March to September were likely to be months when a vulnerable and 'at risk' person (myself) would be unable to travel abroad due to restrictions. Saga were very curt on the phone, gave me short shrift and said they would be making no such concessions and my request for flexibility was denied. On the basis of a goodwill gesture of a 3 month extension to Dec 2020 it would have given me a 'chance' to rebook travel abroad that I had planned over the spring and summer. I would have been wiling to renew my annual multi-trip, worldwide policy for a further year with Saga even if they had not given the extension but if only they had listened to me and shown some sense of valuing me as an existing customer. I also have car insurance with them but as this is a separate company they do not recognise 'multiple loyalty'. Shame on you Saga, alas, they have lost me forever!

“Do not pay out for claims”

written by Jada393 on 08/04/2020

They will not pay out for lost luggage as they say • "These items should be kept on your person, or secured in baggage which stays with you at all times (not suitcases to be checked in)" There is no wording in there policy that says they do not cover checked in luggage. This is what copied from there wording Lost, stolen or damaged baggage Up to £5,000 (£600 single article limit and £1,000 total valuables limit) Very disappointed with the outcome. I paid out for travel insurance for over 30 years. this is the first time i have ever had to claim.

“SAGA - overcharging people that are unable to use the web”

written by rebeccaW1234 on 04/03/2019

My grandma (who is 84, but well) rang up SAGA as her yearly travel insurance was due to run out, as she was only due to take one trip this year, she requested a price for a 2 week holiday. She thought it was expensive but thought it was just due to her age, so paid the £300. She then spoke to me, I thought that this was rather extortionate and checked on online price comparison sites, where I could get the same insurance, from SAGA, for around £120. She rang them back (within 2 hours of taking the policy out) and they refused to do anything. Their only defence was that "the policy sold over the phone had £12 million cover rather than the £10 million available online. I have also complained to them and received a very bog standard reply admitting that the £2 million was the only difference in the products From a company specialising in the elderly, this seems very unfair behaviour. She was not renewing an existing policy, and was not given the option of a cheaper policy on the phone (who would pay nearly £200 extra for that extra £2 million cover on top of the £10 million available?!). This seems like a very shady practice on their part, especially given a large proportion of their customers likely do not use the internet for insurance quotes.

“Misled by Saga Travel Insurance sales personnel”

written by Usernameplus on 07/07/2017

I had previously bought Annual travel insurance from a different company. Last year our flight to Mallorca was postponed by 24 hours so we missed one night of our hotel reservation, for which we were obliged to pay. T&C's of the insurance company we were with precluded payment for hotel unless trip was abandoned and only covered minor expenses for delays. When renewing this year I decided to check whether other companies covered this eventuality. I contacted Saga at the suggestion of Which? The first sales person told me they covered this but I asked for t&c's to be sent by email to ensure that was correct. Nothing within the email reassured me and I called again some days later to clarify. Again I was told this was covered and I would find the details in policy booklet which would be sent by post. On this basis I bought annual travel insurance at a cost of some £ 300 in excess of that quoted by my previous insurers. I did this on the basis that I assumed that since they were a recommended and much more expensive company and I had been assured they covered eventualities the previous company didn't, then the entire policy conditions would be more favourable. Only when I received the policy booklet some two weeks later did I discover none of this was true. I was mis-sold this policy . However my biggest complaint with Saga is that for he past five months I have been in correspondence with their Customer Complaints Department who are totally unable to grasp the cause of my complaint. Despite apparently having listened to the 'recorded 'phone calls when they must have heard my question and the replies received, they stick to the line that I was not misled and quote totally irrelevant text from the policy regarding holiday abandonment. Their claims Department Cigna confirm my understanding is correct but Saga choose to ignore that. Beware Saga in general and their sales tactics in particular.

“inconsiderate and unsympathetic”

written by on 11/04/2017

If I had read some of the reviews on Saga Insurance I wound not touch them with a barge pole. I informed Saga of a medical investigation which I was undergoing and was referred to the Underwriters who told me I should not book any holidays while the investigation was taking place. The medical condition did not put me at risk or prevent me travelling but so as to prevent the invalidation of the policy I felt it's best to inform the insurers as soon as possible. My experience of Saga Underwiters is they showed no sympathy or consideration but some element of arrogance and made me feel as though I was about to drop dead and they would not be willing to provide any cover. I was not given the option that I may not be covered for the condition which was being investigated but that I could be covered for other sections of the policy. During the period of the investigation of the medical condition they had invalidated my Policy and I was again told that I should not book holiday until I had give enough information to update the policy. I was told that my Policy was invalid, though I had paid for an annual premium. I felt I was being penalised for being honest. The staff definitely have a don't care attitude and I fail to see how they can claim to be a good choice Insurer for older people.

“Couldn't Care Less”

written by trishpowell on 24/02/2017

My World Wide Policy inc USA limits trips to 45 days. A family problem required me to extend my stay in Australia for a further 19 days. I first requested by email (which takes two days for a reply), which was negative, I then followed up by a phone call. The lady at Saga went through cto the Underwriter with my request who turned it down. I was told to either get on a plane home or stay without Insurance ! I followed this up with another email stating that my stay will remain in Sydney, not travelling,I am I no medication thus Low Risk and I only asked for a 19 day extension. I have also stated that I will not be using them again, owing to their inflexibility. I have found a very helpful Company that insures older people after the start of their holiday , it has been easy , efficient, and relatively inexpensive for cover. The main thing us that I have peace of mind for the extra time that I am here. Saga could not have cared less . The name of this company is itssoeasytotravelinsuranceSagas reviews on their web site are only the good ones !

“An insurance company that don't pay claims”

written by Robbsn1990 on 23/02/2017

I made a first ever claim on my travel insurance. Saga have done everything in their trick book to avoid paying my claim. They have used Facebook posts, delay tactics, false deadlines, false terms and conditions. avoid at all cost

“Crazy price!”

written by White38 on 23/12/2016

Spent 38 minutes on the phone, eventually getting a quote. The call centre staff member struggled with English and I had to repeat answers several times. She had no concept of phonetics, so they didn't help. I had used Saga for a trip to the same destination (Antigua) in March 16 when they were competitive but this time the quote came back at 3 times the price even though my medical questionnaire was unchanged. The reason given was Brexit and the fall in the GBP?!?

“Terrible”

written by Bakergeoff on 03/11/2015

There must be something that can be done about this company. My experience is exactly the same as all these other complaints. I fell ill while on holiday in Corfu and had to be hospitalised. Since getting home I have had to chase and chase to get any response from Saga. They never call back or make any contact. When I have spoken with someone they give me a different excuse every time I call and am just met with arrogance and rudeness. It is obvious that this is just a trick and should be stopped.

“discriminatory”

written by buButcher148 on 19/09/2015

Quoted £800.00 + administration fee on top of travel insurance policy fee as had seen a psychiatrist for a previously disclosed depression. I challenged this, not least as I had only 1 month left on policy. Oh sorry said the rep I made a mistake. The extra cost is £200.00 + administration fee!?? Not sure what they think I am going to do that warrants that. I can only assume that saga operate discriminatory practices in relation to those one in four of us who experience mental health problems. I got equivalent cover for £27.00.I am told my saga travel insurance that cost over £250.00 is now invalid as i opted not to pay the price of a holiday, so in essence they charge what they like and hold you to ransom. In essence my psychiatrist told me I was not sick enough to need a psychiatrist but saga see me as a significant risk regardless. A sad world don't you think?

“The Saga from hell...”

written by Titch64 on 14/09/2015

My mother purchased Saga insurance for her own peace of mind when going on a weeks family holiday. Due to get declared pre-existing medical conditions it wasn't cheap but she didn't mind thinking it was in good hands. Unfortunately she fell ill 3 days before our departure and was hospitalised in a hospital 45 mins from where we were staying. That is where our saga commences and still continues today. We informed sagas helpline the morning after her hospitalisation - 08/09/15. Unsure as to whether she would be discharged in time for our flight home we asked if they would source alternative accommodation for my sister and I and out family would pick up the cost for the second person. This wasn't posddible as they had not had "confirmation if coversge" and wouldn't pay any costs until they had. We thought this would take a matter of hours to confirm... It took 5 long agonising days for them to "confirm coverage", with them stalling on making a decision at every opportunity. To us it looked as though they were trying to relinquish their responsibility to pay by looking for evidence of non-disclosure but mum had declared everything. The customer service had been non existent with no evidence of compassion or courtesy towards my mum and ourselves. We have had to chase them 2/3 times a day, when they promise to call they don't. They have caused unwarranted distress and stress towards my mum and ourselves. The agents hav day couldn't care less attitude, they give you commitments that they have never kept. 7 long agonising days since get hospitalisation and Wr are still awaiting return flight confirmation. We are hundreds of pounds out of pocket and we are not convinced we will be reimbursed for what we are entitled. I sense a further long and stressful battle once we do get home. Please, please think very carefully before you purchase holiday insurance with saga. If I could have rated it 0 I would have.

Nadmar's Response to Titch64's Review

Written on: 21/09/2015

This review mirrors my experience, I also had the feeling that they were looking for reasons to help them avoid paying. When I complained they said that it was a different company who dealt with my claim whilst abroad. Despite me paying SAGA.

“Terrible Customer Service”

written by on 19/08/2015

Booked travel Insurance for my 88 year old dad to travel to corfu with us this June. he got sick a few weeks before we were due to travel and was unable to go. What a palava trying to get his money back. The first lot of documents came out with the wrong surname on , after going though things on the phone for over 30 minutes giving dates of when he went into hospial dates he was told he was unable to fly, all this and they got all the dates wrong also. Was told to get a letter from the doctor confirming he was unable to fly sent it all off, it came back saying we needed to get a medical report filled out the letter was not acceptable. It has taken 2 month to get to the point that they have now just to get the managers approval to pay his money back. Lost count of how many times I had to ring on his behalf and speak to people over things Saga got wrong on the forms sent to us. If we had known it would be this stressful for us we would never of used Saga wouldnt recommend it to anyone, My advice look at another company to deal with

“Saga Travel Insurance/ Cigna Insurance/ Dont buy ....”

written by horsewhisperer555 on 20/07/2015

I wish I had seen these reviews before I bought travel insurance for my 87 mother in law in May before travelling to Kos, going through SAGA as a recognised Company for their dealings with shall we say 'people over a certain age'! I wish I had looked elsewhere. We had to make a claim as she had pneumonia whilst away and they also thought she had had a mini stroke which resulted in CT scan, xrays, hospital and oxygen in her room as well as neurologist in Kos. All in all a very stressful time for all concerned, I was backwards and forwards faxing various reports, and bills to Saga whilst away, contacting their agent in Athens, we had to pay upfront for all charges......then on return? Nothing!!!! I rang and was told that I had to make a claim although I had been in touch with them daily whilst on holiday, had sent them all we had paid for with receipts by fax etc, they had every report that we did, so was expecting that the settlement would certainly be within a few weeks...... We have been returned now for 2 months, I have spent 45 minutes on the phone today after receiving an email which told me that they wanted to settle my claim, to be told that the claim number quoted is actually nothing to do with me, but while I was there would I like to spend about 15 minutes to fill in the claim form???????? 45 mins later!!! Exasperation set in as the young man on the other end of the phone told me the reason that it was taking so much time was that his typing skills weren't up to much! I could hear him painstakingly pushing each individual key whilst he typed in the notes against the case..... Thoroughly unprofessional, although not his fault they should train him! After spending £40.60 on a medical report from our doctors that they requested, we are now told we cannot claim that expense back and that they are now sending out another Certificate that needs to be signed by the GP which will incur yet another charge! Which apparently we can claim back! I wouldn't hold your breath. What a shower! If you have any sense Don't bother with Saga or Cigna or any of their other associated Companies, it really isn't worth giving yourself the grief! I always give positive feedback on Companies that deserve it not just the ones that don't but this time I really cannot stress enough 'Look Elsewhere!'

Travel insurance for UK holidaymakers: FAQs

What is the highest-rated travel insurance in the uk.

The UK’s leading travel insurance providers include Staysure , Avanti , Travel Insurance 4 Medical, Cover Cloud Travel Insurance, Globelink , Saga and Direct Line. These providers all have at least a four-star rating on TrustPilot.

Can you trust online travel insurance reviews?

You can find a lot of great information from online reviews. Websites like TrustPilot provide trustworthy reviews of the UK's leading travel insurance providers . You can get a great overall view of an insurer when looking at reviews. However, you always want to take the reviews with a pinch of salt. You can't know the individual circumstances behind the complaints.

What is the cheapest travel insurance for older people?

The most affordable travel insurance always depends on your personal circumstances. Many great insurers provide affordable travel insurance for over-50s , from Saga to Avanti . You should compare different options to find the best travel insurance for your needs.

Does travel insurance cover Covid-19 related illness and cancellations?

Many travel insurance providers didn't cover cancellations due to the coronavirus at the start of the pandemic. You can read a lot of online reviews complaining about this. However, insurance companies have since updated their policies. With most insurers, you can also buy extra cover against Covid-19 related travel disruption .

Having the right travel insurance can give you the peace of mind to enjoy your next trip.

Thankfully, finding travel insurance doesn't have to be tricky, even as you get older. Sure, premiums may be more expensive than what you would have once paid. However, many UK travel insurance companies cover pre-existing conditions and offer other elements tailored to older holidaymakers.

While all insurers will talk about the positives of their policies, what matters most are the opinions of those who buy them and potentially have to make a claim.

Let’s look at what people say about some of the UK’s leading travel insurance providers.

Whether you're looking for single-trip, multi-trip, or specialist cover, or need assurance about pre-existing medical conditions, our panel of travel insurance providers has you covered. Click on your chosen provider below to get started.

Allianz Assistance , which takes in Allianz Travel Insurance , was incorporated back in 2014.

  • Upper age limit of 80.
  • Up to 180 days cover available with single trip insurance.
  • Request a personalised quote for your specific requirements.

As the TrustPilot rating shows, on the whole feedback has been relatively positive. In these unprecedented times, there has been huge demand for telephone assistance. As you might expect, this has placed short-term pressure on the service, with some reviewers highlighting difficult experiences.

It is important not to let short-term challenges for the industry overshadow the overall rating for Allianz Travel Insurance . Of the 49,907 reviews received, 76% were excellent, and 6% were great, which gives a clearer picture.

TrustPilot Rating: 4.7 from 315,371 reviews

saga travel insurance rating

Staysure has been around since 2005 and has served over 8 million customers.

  • Cover for pre-existing conditions.

  • No upper age limit.

Generally, Staysure customers love how easy it is to buy a travel insurance policy. Many reviews mention how straightforward the process is and how easy it is to use the Staysure website . In addition, several positive reviews from people who contacted Staysure reported having an excellent experience with its customer service team. Fantastic customer service is usually a pretty safe sign of a reliable company! On top of this, Staysure customers love the different discounts and offers available from the site.

In terms of negative feedback, much of it focuses on difficulty renewing or cancelling policies.

AllClear Travel Insurance

TrustPilot Rating: 4.8 from 116,918 reviews

saga travel insurance rating

Incorporated in 2000, AllClear Travel Insurance has a deep-seated knowledge of the specialist medical travel insurance market. Consequently, the company offers a range of services for all age groups.

  • Upper age limit of 90.
  • Up to 94 days cover available with single trip insurance.

As the TrustPilot rating shows, AllClear Travel Insurance has achieved fantastic feedback, with 84% rating their experience as excellent. While the 94-day cover available with single trip insurance is significantly less than some competitors, remember AllClear Travel Insurance is focused on over 50s market. Some of the other figures quoted, often up to 180 days, are often restricted for older age groups. Many customers have returned to AllClear Travel Insurance, having had a positive experience with previous policies.

In an exceptionally competitive market, AllClear Travel Insurance has attracted more than 116,000 reviews. Less than 1% rated the experience as poor or bad, 2% rated the service average, 13% great, and 84% excellent. Need we say more?

Medical Travel Compared

TrustPilot Rating:  4.8 from 22,440 reviews

saga travel insurance rating

Since inception in 2013, Medical Travel Compared has been providing specialist medical travel insurance for a growing customer base. Direct access to a panel of specialist insurers allows the company to offer a range of travel insurance products:

  • Upper age limit of 90+.
  • Comprehensive cover for a range of medical conditions.
  • Personalised quotes available for specific requirements.

Medical Travel Compared offers an impressive mix of travel insurance deals with specific emphasis on medical cover. While cover details will vary from insurer to insurer, they will match or improve on the industry standard. Whether looking at single, annual multi-trip or long stay travel insurance, there are options from 50 up to 90+ years of age. It is important to remember that once you have chosen your insurance policy, communication should be directly with the insurance provider, not Medical Travel Compared. However, Medical Travel Compared will intervene on your behalf where the insurance company has failed to address your concerns.

Out of over 22,000 reviews, 17% rated the service provided as great with a staggering 80% leaving excellent feedback. Less than 1% rated Medical Travel Compared as poor or bad, with a further 1% posting an average review. In the event of negative reviews, the company has shown a willingness to address any issues both online and directly. What more can we say?

TrustPilot Rating: 4.8 from 70,115 reviews

saga travel insurance rating

Avanti has offered a range of travel insurance products since launching in 2009.

  • No upper age limits.
  • Personalised policies based on your specific needs.

Overall, it would appear that Avanti's customers are delighted with the services offered. The company received particular praise for the ease with which the website can be accessed via different devices. Elsewhere, Avanti quotes were seen as very competitive, the purchase and renewal process simple, and occasional discounts well received. The fact that the claims process is rarely mentioned suggests that the system works well!

Some reviews mentioned trouble accessing account information and Avanti emails falling into spam folders. However, these issues seem to be sporadic and by no means widespread.

Travel Insurance 4 Medical

TrustPilot rating: 4.8 from 19,423 reviews

saga travel insurance rating

Founded back in 1973, Travel Insurance 4 Medical has a long and successful history in the travel insurance industry.

  • Huge range of pre-existing conditions covered.

Travel Insurance 4 Medical has a relatively long history going back to 1973 and, according to reviews, an in-depth understanding of the market. Not only does the company cover a vast array of pre-existing medical conditions, but quotes are competitive and affordable. In addition, the online quote system allows you to tailor policies to your specific needs and budget, receiving a lot of positive feedback. An understanding approach to policy cancellations was also appreciated by reviewers, with refunds settled quickly.

Some concerns were expressed about the cumbersome renewal process, which didn't compare well to other providers. While there was some negative feedback about coronavirus-related claims in the early days of the pandemic, these now appear to have been resolved.

TrustPilot rating: 3.9 from 1,011 reviews

saga travel insurance rating

Globelink has a 20-year track record in the industry and reports an impressive 70% return rate for its customers.

  • Insurance services tailored for senior citizens.
  • Cover for the existing conditions.

Even though reviews for Globelink are relatively limited, a high number of those who posted feedback rated the company as excellent. There are positive references to cover for those in older age groups, with travel insurance cover for over 80s attracting significant praise. Most reviews expressed high satisfaction rates with Globelink's customer service, resolving policy issues relatively quickly with minimal fuss. With 90% of reviews rating the company as great or excellent, Globelink seems to be hitting the spot with consumers.

There was mixed feedback regarding terms of cover and frustration at rejected claims.

TrustPilot rating: 4.4 from 37,961 reviews

saga travel insurance rating

Founded in the 1950s, Saga has branched into other insurance services since then. Still, its core travel insurance remains one of the top such products in the UK.

  • All pre-existing medical conditions considered.

Saga is, for many, the leading name in over 50s travel insurance and online reviews support this view. Feedback suggests the Saga website is easy to use, quotes are quick and competitive and buying insurance online is trouble-free. In addition, the company doesn't exclude any pre-existing medical conditions, which is a massive attraction for many. While there is specific reference to over 50s travel insurance products, reviews also cover other over 50s insurance services, which are, on the whole, very positive.

The only real drawback mentioned in these reviews was the waiting times to speak with customer services. Unfortunately, peak-time phone queues are often unavoidable. Still, there is the option to chat online with a representative or email your queries.

Direct Line

TrustPilot rating: 3.7 from 15,886 reviews

saga travel insurance rating

Direct Line is well-known for offering a range of highly competitive insurance services.

  • Purchase online for savings of up to 25%.
  • Single, annual multi-trip and backpacker cover available.

In a sector often dominated by jargon and small print, customer feedback has highlighted the easy to understand nature of Direct Line travel insurance policies. Amongst the many travel insurance reviews, there is specific mention of the clearly defined level of cover with each policy. Customers have also been waxing lyrical about processing times, with Direct Line's customer service receiving praise.

The negative feedback is a little misleading as much of this relates to other insurance services offered by Direct Line. However, some customers expressed concern about travel insurance renewal prices and individual issues with claims.

Free Spirit Travel Insurance

TrustPilot rating: 4.7 from 3,639 reviews

saga travel insurance rating

Free Spirit Travel Insurance was the first specifically designed for those refused coverage elsewhere due to their health, disability or age.

  • Specific cover for medical aids and prescribed medications.

The number of people returning to Free Spirit Travel Insurance to renew travel insurance and enhance future travel cover says everything about the company. Customers obviously like what the insurer offers; they are satisfied with the cover and the straightforward approach to buying holiday insurance. There is also specific mention of the affordability and ease of finding customised travel insurance considering pre-existing medical conditions.

On the downside, some people mentioned issues with customer services and extended waiting times. There were also some negative comments about the claims process, with a small number experiencing difficulties.

UK travel insurance providers reviewed

The best travel insurance for you always depends on your individual needs and situation. What works for you might not work for someone else. Travel insurance prices also depend on personal circumstances. As such, different providers can provide widely varying quotes. But it can still be a good idea to check online reviews.

The above reviews indicate what different travel insurers are good at and the areas where they could improve. With reviews, it's essential to keep an eye out for the most recent feedback. If this is mainly negative, you might want to consider your choices. While much of it can be genuine and warranted, you also want to take some negative feedback with a grain of salt. Complaints regarding specific policies can be challenging to understand without knowing the full details.

The companies listed in the article have high ratings and are generally a good pick. Overall, these UK travel insurance providers have a good selection of products. Comparing your travel insurance options is often the best way to find a policy that works for you.

Is Saga a good car insurance company?

3,5 Safe overall rating for Saga car insurance

Saga car insurance specialises in providing insurance services for drivers that are over the age of 50. On the website, there was no detail about the exact amount that would be paid per cover policy. Apart from this, the reviews gotten on Trustpilot were good in terms of customer service and availability. Also, the website can easily be navigated through and the preferred policy can be chosen. There is a live bot but it is not always available so it might take a while for enquiries to be answered if you are using this medium. However, all in all, the car insurance company can be said to be average.

In addition to typical car insurance coverage choices, Saga offers, among other options:

Breakdown cover

Saga Breakdown Assistance cover can be added to your policy at a discounted rate. There are different options to pick from for the breakdown cover and they are:

Saga offers personal cover up between £5,000 to £50,000, and this covers a wider range of injuries. It is also inclusive of a £200 per night fee if the victim is hospitalised for up to 10 days.

Good travel insurance policies

We chose Saga travel insurance because it offers £10,000 per person cover, if you have to cancel your holiday (most others only offer £5000) and it includes cruise cover as standard. It was easy to apply online, including declaring a medical condition, and the price was competitive for the cover offered. We just hope its as good if we have to make a claim!

Have pre-existing medical conditions? Try Saga first.

I have pre-existing medical conditions, nothing too serious but the quotes I was receiving were so expensive. After hours of comparison sites and filling in numerous quote forms - Saga were the best price. Not only that, their quote form was easy and straightforward. I would recommend a quote from Saga before you then do a comparison, may save you hours of your time!!

Putting unreasonable hurdle to my claim

I got torn my acl ligament at my left knee. I called saga wanting to see consultant. Saga replied to me I need a referral from GP. However, I cannot make an appointment from GP as they said they can't help in this case. I called Saga, and they arranged a private GP for me and after consulted the private GP arranged by Saga, the GP issue a referral letter to Saga and verified I had the need to see the consultant. However, Saga then replied to me that private GP is not accepted and I need the referral letter from NHS GP. I went to A and E in hospital, a physiotherapist exam me and concluded also I had a ACL ligament torn and X ray results shown bone is fine. Then I request my NHS GP to give me a referral letter, however, after more than 1 week, they still can't give me the letter and said they have no time frame to do it. My complaint is, if private GP referral letter is not accepted, why Saga arranged for me and waste my time? Does policy mention private GP not accepted? Is Saga responsible for my delayed treatment? Or Saga just want to put hurdle to a injured patient like me?

Car insurance - Utter SAGA

Car insurance - Despite providing the No Claims discount information from my previous insurer I kept receiving reminders with threats that the policy would be cancelled unless the information was provided. Eventually, having also received confirmation that the policy was verified I received another letter advising that the policy would be cancelled as they hadn't received the information! So, I cancelled and reinsured for less with another insurer. Ironically, the cancellation confirmation from SAGA included confirmation that my NCD was as I had provided. Just pants, don't waste your time

A very simple process.

A very simple process on line to select Travel Insurance cover for over 50+ when other companies made the process very difficult. Clear and uncomplicated navigation through their selection process and most importantly, realistically priced. Would recommend SAGA and will certainly use again.

Long phone wait. Chose competitor

Missed my renewal. Tried to start a new quote online. Got to the end of the tediously lengthy process to be greeted with 'call us', not a quote. "Sorry, unusually busy,15 min wait". Called. Got bored. Checked competitors which gave extended EU cover. Found LV. Entered much simpler online details. Instant quote, £20 cheaper. Booked. Moral: Get enough call operators or you lose business. I'll remember next time too.

Good evening, I am so sorry to hear you have not been able to get through to us on the phone. I do understand you have taken a policy elsewhere however, if you do require further assistance, please feel free to come and chat with us by going to www.saga.co.uk/chat and our team will be able to help. Kind regards- Layla.

What a Sarga!!!

I had house and contents insurance with Saga. They sent me a renewal notice indicating that the premium had risen by £80. Having taken it out for one year only I forgot to inform them that I had taken the next year with another company. For being one day late in informing then they charged me £32. I am 76 years old and cannot afford payment but they insisted. I thought wrongly that this company primarily dealt with people like myself. Wrong they are a disgrace they are no different to any other insurance company who put profits before customers.

Good evening, I am so sorry to hear you have been charged for a policy which you did not intend to take. We would like to get this looked into. If you can, please chat with us by going to www.saga.co.uk/chat and our team will be happy to help. Kind regards- Layla.

Easy as cutting through butter

Tried to Update my H0me Insurance

I rang SAGA Insurance to cancel my home insurance as I had moved house. I was advised that I didn't need to cancel, I could just change the address on my Policy. That sounded good so I agreed. Then I was told that the underwriters wouldn't insure my new address. I found this hard to believe as I had moved only around 200metres - to a larger flat - same style, same builders, similar age. No mention now of just changing the address, and a new Policy was found with another underwriter. I indicated that I just wanted to change the address or cancel and was told that I might owe SAGA some money if I cancelled the Policy. I had to leave the Policy as I didn't want to incur any charges. So my Policy is covering an address where I no longer live. I find now that every time I ring a Company with an issue regarding my product I am expected to take out a new contract or buy a newer product. I have taken a firm stance and when Companies do this to me, I don't buy from them.

Date of experience : 10 April 2024

Good evening, I am so sorry to hear this. We would not want you to be paying for a policy on a home you no longer own. I would like to get this investigated for you. If you can, please come and chat with us by going to www.saga.co.uk/chat and our team can help. Kind regards -Layla.

AIG Travel Guard is a well-established and highly rated name in the travel insurance industry. It offers three main coverage options to choose from, and in general its policies have above-average coverage for baggage loss and baggage delays, plus high medical evaluation coverage limits. If you're looking for travel insurance, consider Travel Guard.

AIG Travel Guard Travel Insurance Review

AIG Travel Guard is among the best travel insurance companies with impressive coverage limits, even with its basic plan, Travel Guard Essential. It's emergency medical evacuation coverage is particularly high, making Travel Guard a good choice for insuring cruises, as sea to land evacuations are often expensive.

Additionally, Travel Guard's Premium and Deluxe plans offer coverage that many of its competitors don't, such as its travel inconvenience coverage and ancillary evacuation coverage.

That said, Travel Guard is on the pricey side, compared with its competitors. While age is often a factor in your insurance premiums, Travel Guard tends to quote older travelers higher rates than its competitors. However, you often get what you pay for. In Travel Guard's case, you'll find that its coverage justifies its higher rates.

While great coverage is important, it's also crucial that an insurance company has a smooth claims process, which Travel Guard lacks, according to its customer reviews. Across 135 reviews on its Trustpilot page, AIG Travel Guard received an average of 1.2 stars, with 95% of reviewers giving the company one star. Surprisingly, AIG Travel Guard fares even worse with the Better Business Bureau, receiving an average of 1.08 stars out of five across 301 reviews.

Coverage Options Offered by AIG Travel Guard

AIG Travel Guard offers three primary plans: Travel Guard Essential, Travel Guard Preferred, and Travel Guard Deluxe. Each plan has different coverage limits and various types of protection.

Here's a look at what you'll get with each plan:

Depending on the policy you select, there are also additional coverages that my be included at no extra charge, like pre-existing conditions waiver, single occupancy fee coverage, worldwide travel and medical assistance services, and more. Be sure to check each policy closely to see what is and isn't covered.

Each of these plans also include coverage for one child under 17 as long as their travel costs are equal to or under the adult's cost. Additional coverages do not apply to the child.

AIG Travel Guard Pack N' Go Plan

In addition to these three primary plans, Travel Guard offers the Pack N' Go policy along with an Annual plan. This policy is for last-minute travelers who don't need trip cancellation coverage.

This plan includes:

  • Trip interruption and trip delay ($200 per day maximum) up to $1,000
  • Missed connection up to $500
  • Baggage delay up to $200 and baggage coverage up to $1,000
  • Medical expenses up to $25,000 and dental expenses up to $500
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains up to $500,000.

AIG Travel Guard Annual Plan

Taking multiple trips throughout the year? Consider the Travel Guard Annual plan instead of purchasing a new policy for each adventure. This plan comes with coverage for:

  • Trip interruption coverage  up to $2,500
  • Trip delay coverag e up to $1,500 ($150 per day maximum)
  • Missed connection coverag e up to $500
  • Baggage delay coverage up to $1,000 and lost/damaged baggage coverage up to $2,500
  • Medical expenses coverage up to $50,000 and dental expenses up to $500
  • Emergency evacuation coverage and repatriation of remains up to $500,000
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage up to $50,000 and security evacuation up to $100,000

Note: The Annual plan is not available in Washington and New York

Additional Coverage Options from AIG Travel Guard

Like many other travel insurance providers, Travel Guard offers add-ons for an additional cost. These can be selected while you're purchasing your policy.

The availability of these add-ons depends on the policy you're buying. Note also that some are already included in the Preferred and Deluxe plans.

  • Medical bundle — Increases coverage amounts for medical expenses and evacuation and adds hospital of choice and additional evacuation benefits.
  • Security bundle — Provides various coverages for trip interruption or cancellation due to riot or civil disorder.
  • Rental vehicle damage coverage — Reimburses a predetermined amount for physical damage to a rental car in the policy holder's name.
  • Cancel for Any Reason Insurance (CFAR) — This is just what it sounds like. Cancel for any reason coverage will reimburse 75% of nonrefundable expenses when you cancel your trip for any reason, up to 48 hours before your scheduled departure. CFAR coverage is only available for Travel Guard's Deluxe and Preferred plans.
  • Inconvenience bundle — Offers reimbursement for inconveniences like closed attractions, credit/debit card cancellation, hotel construction, and more.
  • Pet bundle coverage — Daily travel benefit for boarding and medical expense coverage for illness or injury of dog or cat. Includes trip cancellation or interruption coverage if the pet is in critical condition or dies within seven days before the departure date.

How to Purchase and Manage Your AIG Policy

Aig travel guard cost.

Getting a quote from AIG Travel Guard is quick and easy. Head to AIG website and enter basic information about the trip you're looking to cover. You'll get an instant quote for the insurance plans available for your trip, so it's easy to compare each option. Be prepared to provide information including:

  • Your state of residence
  • Date of birth
  • The cost of your trip
  • Travel dates
  • Destination
  • Method of travel

We ran a few simulations to offer examples of how much a Travel Guard policy might cost. You'll see that costs usually fall within 5-7% of the total trip cost, depending on the policy tier you choose.

As of April 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  Travel Guard travel insurance quotes:

  • Travel Guard Essential: $86.96
  • Travel Guard Preferred: $152.01
  • Travel Guard Deluxe: $188.59

Premiums for Travel Guard's various single trip plans are between 2.8% and 6.3%, well within, and even below, the average cost of travel insurance .

A 30-year-old traveler from California is heading to Japan for two weeks, costing $4,000. The Travel Guard travel insurance quotes are:

  • Travel Guard Essential: $198.77
  • Travel Guard Preferred: $240.39
  • Travel Guard Deluxe: $305.04

Premiums for Travel Guard's various single trip plans are between 5% and 7.6%, within the average cost for travel insurance.

A couple of 65-years of age looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following Travel Guard quotes:

  • Travel Guard Essential: $471.10
  • Travel Guard Preferred: $618.22
  • Travel Guard Deluxe: $834.78

Premiums for Travel Guard's various single trip plans are between 7.9% and 13.9%, which is significantly higher than the average cost. That said, travel insurance is often more expensive as you get older.

AIG Travel Guard Annual Plan Cost

Getting a quote for the annual plan requires much less information, only asking for the intended policy start date, your state of residence, and how many people you plan to insure. Quotes from AIG remained at $259 per traveler, regardless of state of residence and number of travelers.

How to File A Claim with AIG Travel Guard

Filing a claim with Travel Guard is a straightforward process. You'll need your policy number and can either go to travelguard.com or call Travel Guard at 866-478-8222 to start the claim. Once submitted, you can check the status of your claim at claims.travelguard.com/status.

AIG Travel Guard vs. Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide is a household name when it comes to insurance providers and one of the largest and most-recognized insurance providers in the US. Similarly to Travel Guard, Nationwide makes it easy to find coverage by offering just two single-trip plans: the Essential and Prime plan.

In addition, offers plans specifically designed for cruises along with annual trip insurance for those who travel a lot throughout the year.

The Essential Plan comes with trip cancellation coverage of up to $10,000, up to $250,000 in emergency medical evacuation, up to $150 per day reimbursement for travel delays of 6+ hours, and coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

In comparison, the Travel Guard Essential plan covers trip cancellations with up to $100,0000 in coverage, up to $150,000 in emergency medical evacuation expenses, up to $100 per day ($500 total) for trip delays of 12+ hours, along with lost or delayed baggage coverage.

The high-tier Prime Plan from offers even more coverage, including trip cancellation up to $30,000, trip interruption coverage up to 200% of the trip cost (maximum of $60,000), missed connection and itinerary change coverage of $500 each, $250 per day for trip delays of 6+ hours, and up to $1 million in coverage for emergency medical evacuation

AIG's highest-tier Deluxe plan comes with trip cancellation coverage of up to $150,000, up to $1,000,000 in emergency medical evacuation, up to $200 per day ($1,000 maximum) reimbursement for travel delays of 12+ hours, and coverage for delayed or lost baggage.

As you can see, it's hard to compare apples to apples when comparing the two different insurance providers. But it helps to know the specifics of the coverages that matter most to you.

AIG Travel Guard vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

With Allianz Travel Insurance , you can choose from 10 different insurance plans to find one that suits your needs. Like Travel Guard, it offers one-off policies for specific trips and an annual travel insurance plan for those who take multiple trips a year. Similar to AIG, too, the different plans offer varying levels of coverage.

's most popular single-trip option is the OneTrip Prime plan. This plan offers trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000, trip interruption coverage up to $150,000, emergency medical coverage for $50,000, coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000, and up to $800 in travel delay coverage.

The most similar plan from Travel Guard is the mid-tier Travel Guard Preferred plan, which which you'll get up to $150,000 in trip cancellation coverage, trip interruption coverage up to $225,000, $50,000 in emergency medical coverage, coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000, and travel delay coverage of up to $800.

A variety of factors will determine the final cost of any of these travel insurance policies. However, when comparing quotes with the same factors, Allianz tends to be cheaper. Additionally, Travel Guard seems to be more sensitive to the traveler's age. However, it's best to compare quotes using your specific personal and trip details to determine which policy is the best for you.

Read our Allianz travel insurance review here.

AIG Travel Guard vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

Before purchasing a travel insurance plan, take a look at the coverage offered through your travel rewards credit cards. Some of the basic coverages you're looking for, like rental car insurance, may already be available through credit card travel protection .

The coverage you have on your credit card couple be sufficient if, for example, you're taking a road trip by car and you don't have any non-refundable trip expenses. It could also be enough if your health insurance covers you while you travel and you aren't overly worried about incurring additional medical expenses during your trip.

It's also worth remembering that credit card coverage is usually secondary versus the primary coverage you'd get with a travel insurance policy. Meaning you'll have to file a claim with the other applicable insurance (like through the airline travel provider) before filing a claim with your credit card company.

Table of Contents

  • Allianz Travel Insurance
  • AIG Travel Guard

Buying travel insurance can be a smart move for most trips, but those who travel more than a few times a year should consider an annual travel insurance policy. Whether you regularly travel for business and/or take several vacations a year, annual travel insurance plans can help you get the coverage you need without having to price out and purchase protection every time you leave home.

If you find yourself in a situation where an annual plan makes sense, know that not all travel insurance companies offer this kind of coverage. You'll also want to consider the available annual travel insurance plans to see which options make sense for your travel style and the level of coverage you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

Annual travel insurance plans all work in their own way, but the majority let travelers pay one annual premium for coverage that lasts for up to 364 days. These plans often limit the length of individual trips that are covered within the coverage year. Per-trip and annual limits on coverage can also apply.

In some cases, annual travel insurance plans require a deductible or coinsurance for certain types of coverage. If you're considering an annual travel insurance plan because you take multiple trips each year, make sure you read over the policy details and understand all coverage limits and trip limits that apply.

The cost of annual travel insurance typically varies based on factors like the age of the travelers applying, included benefits and coverage limits. You will want to shop around to compare plans across multiple providers using a platform like TravelInsurance.com or Squaremouth before you settle on a travel insurance policy.

To provide an example of the cost of annual travel insurance, U.S. News applied for a quote for two 40-year-old travelers seeking coverage for eight trips over a 12-month period. The Squaremouth travel insurance portal quoted policies with costs that range from $206 for the GeoBlue Trekker Essential plan to $610 for the Safe Travels Annual Deluxe plan by Trawick International.

Annual travel insurance can be worth it if you take multiple trips each year and want to make sure you always have coverage in place. After all, the alternative to having a multitrip policy is buying a new travel insurance plan for every vacation you take. That's not always feasible for frequent travelers who are always jetting off somewhere new – often at the last minute.

Just keep in mind that annual travel insurance plans tend to come with lower coverage limits than plans for single trips, and that you'll pay a premium for coverage that comes with comprehensive benefits and high limits for medical expenses and emergency evacuation.

Holiday group Saga's profit forecast weighed down by insurance weakness

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Saga, which brought on a new CEO in November, has been struggling with its insurance business. It tried to sell its insurance underwriting arm, but put the sale process on hold shortly after ending talks with Australia's Open Insurance Technologies.

Saga increased prices at its insurance underwriting business in the past 18 months, saying it was now on a "much stronger footing" amid challenging conditions.

However, changes in the insurance broking business, including cutting prices and addressing recent declines in policy sales in motor and home insurance, meant earnings would take a short-term hit.

BY THE NUMBERS

Saga reported an underlying pretax profit of 38.2 million pounds ($47.6 million) for the year ended Jan. 31, more than double from a year earlier. Revenue jumped 12% to 741.1 million pounds.

Bookings for the company's Ocean Cruise unit remain strong, Saga said, having secured a load factor of 78% for 2024/25, higher than the same time last year. Travel bookings were also ahead.

"While our insurance business continued to be hindered by challenging conditions, with inflationary headwinds impacting policy volumes and margins, particularly for our three-year fixed-price policies, we are taking the necessary actions to reposition the business," CEO Mike Hazell said.

"Ocean Cruise had an outstanding year and, as a result, we far exceeded our initial earnings targets, while River Cruise and Travel both returned to profit for the first time since the pandemic."

MARKET REACTION

Saga shares opened lower and hit their lowest since October, before reversing course to be up about 3% by 0709 GMT.
