This seaside haven boasts a host of attractions for nature-lovers and adventurers.

Phillip Island offers incredible Australian wildlife experiences set to the backdrop of spectacular landscapes. The famous Penguin Parade is just the beginning, so get ready for a holiday filled with nature, local food and wine and fresh sea air.

Phillip Island is best accessed by car. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so it’s an easy road trip from Melbourne. Pick up a hire car from one of Melbourne’s two airports.

  • Melbourne Airport (MEL) in Tullamarine is the closest airport to Phillip Island, located only two hours away; international and domestic flights arrive here
  • Avalon Airport (AVV) is located 192km (119mi) from Phillip Island; international and domestic flights arrive here

If you’d prefer to avoid driving, join a guided tour where transfers are also included.

Phillip Island is best enjoyed when the weather is warm, typically from November through March. The mild weather will ensure you can enjoy the walking tracks, beaches and wildlife experiences to their fullest. During summer, the local wildlife comes out to play. It’s also a great time to witness the Penguin Parade, when little penguins emerge from the sea after catching their dinner.

  • High season: Summer (December to February)
  • Low season: Winter (June to August)
  • Don’t miss: Spotting thousands of seals on a coastal cruise. During autumn (March to May), the seal pups can be seen swimming, playing and practicing prey-chasing.

Phillip Island is a destination at the forefront of accessibility in Australia, with incredible facilities and experiences for those with physical and neurological disabilities.

  • Arrival: Melbourne Airport provides accessible services to ensure seamless arrivals. From there, travellers with limited mobility can book a wheelchair-accessible transfer or taxi to Phillip Island.
  • Getting around: You’ll find a range of accessible resources to help you get around, including mobility maps, all-terrain wheelchair hire and a Changing Places directory. You can also book wheelchair-accessible vehicles with South Coast Taxi.
  • Accessible experience highlights: Phillip Island Nature Parks are committed to providing inclusive wildlife experiences for everyone to enjoy. The famous Penguin Parade and Koala Conservation Reserve are both certified sensory-inclusive sites with facilities for those with physical and neurological disabilities.
  • Helpful resources: Rollers Retreat offers wheelchair-accessible holiday accommodation as well as guides for things to do and places to eat during your stay.

The Complete Phillip Island Guide: The Day Trip From Melbourne You Can’t Miss

travel guides phillip island

Don’t just come for the penguin parade at sunset, here’s how to spend a full day out at Phillip Island! (Pst: Take S$20 off your Melbourne activities)

Spotted. The first group of penguins finally made an appearance on the flat sandy shores. “No flash lights please” the staff reminds the crowd for the zenith time.

Everyday without fail — just before the sunsets — the Little Penguins make their way home through the beaches of Phillip Island. As the skies get darker, more and more penguins emerge hurriedly. A few trip over each other, but most seem to know the way. Phillip Island for thousands of years have been home to the Eudyptula Minor — the tiniest penguins in the world.

Witnessing this spectacle definitely makes it to the top 5 things you need to experience when visiting Melbourne — it’s undisputedly adorable. But these aren’t the only cuties on Phillip Island. If you’re driving two hours out from Melbourne, this guide is about all the other amazing experiences you can look forward to in Phillip Island.

Getting from Melbourne to Phillip Island

Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes - Phillip Island Day Trip From Melbourne

*Pro-tip:  Get here before 8AM to save on parking and to capture the beach over Golden Hour. Parking between 8AM – 8PM is at AU$3.40/hour.

If you prefer somewhere a little quieter, St. Kilda’s beach is along the way too — if you’re lucky, you might even spot wild penguins here!

Feeling peckish? Stop by San Remo , just before crossing the bridge to Phillip Island for some fish & chips!

Phillip Island Itinerary

Penguin Parade - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

The itinerary below is best for the months between November and March when the penguins arrive between 8 – 8:45PM, giving you plenty of time to explore the rest of the island. If you’re travelling here outside this period, feel free to mix and match our itinerary around the Penguin Parade.

*Pro-tip:  Save up to S$50 by booking your Phillip Island combo pass  early. More details about the pass at the end!

10:30AM: The Pinnacle Lookout on Woolamai Beach

After two hours of driving, take a breather at the Woolamai beach . It’s a popular beach for surfers and if you’re up for the stroll, there’s a gorgeous lookout an hour’s walk from the beach carpark. We didn’t manage to make it but here’s what you can possibly expect!

1PM: Churchill Island

Churchill Heritage Farm - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

Entrance Fee:  AU$12.80 (The coastal walk is free) Opening Hours:  10AM – 5PM (last entry at 4:45PM)

3PM: EcoBoat Adventure Tour

Ecoboat Adventure boat - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

One of the best ways to see an island is perhaps around it and there’s no better fashion than on a fun, 90-minute speedboat! While our eyes were set on the penguin parade that evening, the EcoBoat Adventure took the cake for us (sorry penguins!).

Ecoboat Adventure Sea Rock - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

There’s another ride at 5PM too but the seas are usually too rough at that time to head out far where the seals are.

Cost: AU$85 ( ~S$65 via Klook . Also covered in the Phillip Island 5 Park Pass ) Boat departure:  3PM & 5PM

Fish & Chips at Tides of Rhyll Cafe

Tides of Rhyll Cafe - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

Depending on sea conditions for the day, the EcoBoat will set off from different jetties. Ours was headed out from Rhyll jetty so we stopped by Tides of Rhyll Cafe for some fish and chips.

A plated set of flake with chips or salad costs AU$14 but if you don’t mind eating out of a box, you can get a Flake for AU$7.50 and order a portion of minimum chips (enough to feed 2-3pax) for $4.

Opening Hours: 12PM – 8PM (Closed on Tues & Weds)  Address:  11 Beach Rd, Rhyll VIC 3923, Australia

5PM: Koala Conservation Centre

Koala Conservation - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

A 7-minute drive from Rhyll will bring you to Phillip Island’s very own Koala conservation centre . First stop, you’ll want to locate one of the two tree top broadwalks which allow you to come up close with the Koalas.

Koala Conservation Centre - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

They’ll probably be found either napping in the trees or snacking on eucalyptus leaves (quite rarely crawling around). Apart from Koalas, the six hectare bushland is also home to plenty of colourful native birds, wallabies and echidnas.

Entrance Fees:  AU$12.80 Opening Hours:  10AM – 6PM

6PM: Nobbies Antarctic Centre

Nobbies Antarctic journey - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

Last stop before the Penguins arrive on the beach, the Nobbies Antarctic Centre is on the westernmost end of Phillip Island and just 5 minutes from the Penguin parade. Included in the 4 park and 5 park Phillip Island passes , this interactive exhibition is filled with hands-on learning experiences about the Antarctic region and its residents.

Entrance Fee: AU$18 (~S$9 via Klook) Opening Hours:  10AM – 2 hours before sunset (Check the official opening times here)

7PM: Penguin Parade

Penguin parade General Viewing - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

For general viewing, the best seats are right at the bottom by the sand, at the sides. The penguins are said to always take the same route back to their homes and will probably walk to the sides where it leads to their burrows.

Penguin Parade - Phillip Island Guide: Day Trip From Melbourne

For a more up close experience, you can opt for the Penguin plus or Penguin underground ticket which is slightly less crowded and brings you to eye level of the Little Penguins.

Entrance Fees:   AU$25.70 (general viewing) — Pre-book your seats on Klook for competitive prices

Phillip Island Combo Ticket

If you’re planning to visit more than just the penguins, a popular option is the  3 Park Pass (AU$43.60)  which includes the Penguin Parade , Churchill Island as well as the Koala Conservation Centre ; these will cost AU$51 if bought individually at Phillip Island.

Ecoboat Adventure - Phillip island guide

However, a huge highlight for us on this trip was the EcoBoat Adventure tour which on it’s own can be quite pricy at AU$85. If the EcoBoat is something you’re up for, definitely get yourself the   5 Park Pass (AU$135.30)  which includes everything in the 3 Park Pass, along with access to  Nobbies Antarctic Centre and a ride on the EcoBoat Adventure .

*Pro-tip: Pre-book your Phillip Island Combo Ticket via Klook for 20% cheaper rates. Get an extra S$20 off experiences in Melbourne with the promo code < VISITMELB20 >

Phillip Island

Phillip Island is a large island at the mouth of Western Port Bay, less than two hours drive from Melbourne in Victoria . Because of its proximity to the state capital, it's a popular weekend tourist destination, especially during the summer months. The island is separated from the mainland by just a channel and is connected by a bridge. It is part of the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland .

Understand [ edit ]

Cowes is the main town on the island, and in addition there are other smaller towns such as Rhyll, Cape Woolamai, Ventnor (closest town to the Penguin Parade) and Newhaven. The principal source of income is tourism, and there are many cafes, restaurants, etc., to cater to the appetites of the tourists.

The island is steeped in motorsport history. Australia's first ever international Grand Prix was held in 1924 on the original circuit comprising the still existing roads on Phillip Island. The annual Australian Grand Prix , an official round of the World MotoGP plus a round of the World Superbike (WBSK) is held at the 1950s purpose-built Motor Racing Circuit , and draws a massive contingent of motor sport fans (colloquially known as "petrolheads") every year.

Get in [ edit ]

There are a multitude of ways to reach the Island.

By car [ edit ]

The journey from the Melbourne City Centre to Cowes is just over 140 km and takes about 2 hours (it can take up to 3 hours during major events such as the Grand Prix). The main route is down the Monash Freeway towards Warragul, turning off at the South Gippsland Freeway (M420), South Gippsland Highway (M420) and Bass Highway (M420/B420) and following the signs. Phillip Island is connected by a two-lane bridge to the small fishing town of San Remo on the mainland.

By bus [ edit ]

V/Line runs public coaches from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne's CBD to Cowes and Inverloch via Dandenong & Koo Wee Rup. You will need to catch the coach towards Yarram in the state's east, alighting at the town of Koo Wee Rup. From there, you can transfer to another coach towards Cowes . The buses are timetabled to connect, so there should only be a 5- to 10-minute wait at Koo Wee Rup. There are 8 departures daily on weekdays, with 4 departures daily on weekends. The trip should take no more than 2½ hours. You can plan your journey at Public Transport Victoria .

By tour [ edit ]

A range of companies offer tours of Phillip Island if you don't want to self drive. These typically include the Penguin Parade and a range of other wildlife experiences. Grayline , APT and AAT Kings all offer 'Big Bus' tours down to the island daily, whilst Posh Penguins offers private and smaller group tours down to Phillip Island.

By ferry [ edit ]

If you're after a more scenic journey, a ferry departs from Stony Point on the Mornington Peninsula to Cowes daily.

  • From Flinders Street Station, take a metro train to Frankston
  • Transfer to a diesel train at Frankston station, alighting at the last stop, Stony Point.
  • Board the ferry at the Stony Point Wharf, adjacent to the station, towards -38.447 145.239725 1 Cowes Jetty .

In total, the journey should take about 2½ hours, the same as the bus. However, you will need to pay for a ferry ticket on top of a Zone 1+2 Myki fare. The ferry departs weekdays to Phillip Island between 7:10AM and 7:25PM, on weekends ferries run less frequently. For timetabling and costs, see Western Port Ferries .

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Phillip Island is not a small island. Walking from Newhaven to the Nobbies, on opposite ends of the island, would take upwards of 5 hours. Such large distances generally require a car to get around. The island's main road is Phillip Island Road , running from the bridge near Newhaven to Cowes. The turn-off to the left near Sunset Strip onto Back Beach Road provides the direct route to the Penguin Parade and the Nobbies. Most rural roads on the island have a speed limit of 80 km/h, although be wary of wildlife such as kangaroos which are known to wander onto the road.

The island has very little in the way of a public transport network. The Cowes Line bus runs six times each way weekdays, and four times on weekends; it travels between Cowes and Wonthaggi , via Anderson and San Remo along Phillip Island Road. The V/Line bus to Melbourne also follows the same route from Anderson, and can be used for making short hops along the island. Tickets can be purchased on-board both buses. There is no public bus service to the Penguin Parade, Rhyll, the Grand Prix Circuit or the Nobbies.

Phillip Island Designated Driver [dead link] ( ☏ +61 481 265 534 ) operates an on-demand transfer service around the island, including to destinations such as the Penguin Parade. Booking required, and a deposit must be paid in advance.

Weekend Getaways: Phillip Island

Take a break on Phillip Island with activities for nature lovers, thrill seekers and families

Phillip Island has long been one of Melbourne's top destinations for a weekend away, mostly because of its adorable colony of little penguins (yes, that's what they're actually called). And while those penguins are 100 per cent worth a visit all on their own, the island is full of other fun things to do for all ages. It's home to the most spectacular Grand Prix Circuit in the world, used in the annual Superbike World Championship , as well as scenic walks offering up-close encounters with iconic Australian wildlife.

An email you’ll actually love

The ultimate guide to Phillip Island

See and do

Yes, you really do have to see Phillip Island's  famous little penguin parade . These tiny birds (also called fairy penguins) come in from a hard day of fishing at sunset every night of the year, parading up the beach to their burrows in the sand dunes. Thousands of little penguins nest here, and they make the journey from sea to burrow each night, unfazed by the hundreds of people who turn up to watch them march.

Ticket options range from tiered seating in viewing grandstands and the Penguins Plus package, which will get you within a metre of the tiny critters, to guided ranger tours that offer additional commentary. Keep an eye out for eastern barred bandicoots, too.

Penguins aren't the only animals to call Phillip Island home. The island's Koala Conservation Reserve is the place to get a good look at one of Australia's emblematic animals. You can explore six hectares of native bushland via easily accessible walking tracks, and make sure you keep your eyes on the trees. Boardwalks will take you to within a few metres of more than a dozen koalas. If you're lucky, they'll be up and about and enjoying the fresh eucalyptus leaves keepers bring in each day.

Sea caves seen from an Ocean Adventures boat

If you want your animal encounters kicked up a notch,  Ocean Adventures  offers snorkelling and scuba diving around the island. Underwater kelp forests attract dozens of fish species to the waters around Phillip Island, and scuba diving and snorkelling are fantastic ways to explore sheltered coves and gorgeous underwater worlds. Ocean Adventures also has Yamaha sea scooters available to pull snorkellers along underwater, making crossing distances a breeze. There are numerous other aquatic offerings, including jetskis, a scuba school and rides on the cheek-flattening Thundercat. The super-fast boat will take you past jaw-dropping sea caves and cliffs, and you might just get to see some of Phillip Island's many seals.

If you want to see seals en masse, book yourself passage on a Wildlife Coast Cruise . The two-hour return trip will take you out to the aptly named Seal Rocks, two kilometres off the coast. You'll see hundreds of seals basking in the sun and swimming in the chilly waters surrounding the rocks, barking to each other and playing. Tours depart from Cowes Jetty.

Wallabies in Phillip Island

You'll see plenty of other wildlife, including wallabies, Cape Barren geese and bandicoots if you take one of Phillip Island's many scenic walks. The biggest bang for your walking buck is at the Nobbies , a clifftop bushland area with 500 metres of boardwalk out to an explosive blowhole. The Nobbies area is at the very tip of the island, and you'll get gorgeous views out over the sea as you walk. Our tip: wear warm clothing, even in summer. It's the coldest part of the island, and the wind is fierce. There's also a visitor centre, so you can go inside and warm up if you need to.

Bored with keeping your feet on the ground or your flippers in the sea? Hop aboard a flight with Phillip Island Helicopters  and take a scenic tour of the island. Get a different perspective on the island and check out Phillip Island's natural beauty and famous Grand Prix track from the air.

If you're visiting during the Tissot-sponsored World SBK or the  Motorcycle Grand Prix , check out the action on the waterside circuit. If the events aren't on, you can go out on the track and feel the wind in your hair yourself – kind of. There's a go-kart track set up next to the real GP course, matching every twist and turn in miniature. DIY 'vroom' noises.

The five-kilometre return Pyramid Rock to Berrys Beach walk is also well worth your time. The clifftop trail offers pretty spectacular views and the path is wide, mostly flat and easy to navigate. There are a few steps and undulating terrain, but for the most part, it's easy on the calves. The Berrys Beach end of the walk is along a paved road, but most of it traverses grassland. Keep an eye out for wallabies and the ubiquitous Cape Barren geese.

Phillip Island Helicopter Tours

There are plenty of good food options on the island, and we'd highly recommend stopping in at Wild Food Farm and Café  in Rhyll for breakfast or lunch. The property is a labour of love by Jude Mayall, whom you may know as the founder of bushfood company OutbackChef (and author of a cookbook of the same name). The farm grows native bush tucker like wattleseed and lemon myrtle, which is then used in the café as well as being packaged and sold online, in the gift shop and wholesale to chefs, distillers and brewers all over Australia. Fresh, native ingredients make the food here sing, and you can have a wander through hectares of native bushland and carefully cultivated bush tucker plants before or after your meal.

Many have tried, but most have failed to treat the humble toastie with as much grace and reverence as the folks at the Store , a blink-and-you'll-miss-it (literally, we did exactly that) café and shop. The menu is limited to pies and toasties, but what toasties they are. The pies were sold out when we visited, but the sandwiches more than made up for their absence. We tried the Cubano and the spicy tuna, and both approached the platonic ideal for toasties. The bread was perfectly crisp, plucked from the grill just before it turned a shade too dark, and the fillings were fresh, abundant and well-considered. The coffee is also excellent, the kind of moreish brew that practically begs you to have a second cup.

Carb-loving locals will be spoiled for choice; make your way to Pino's Trattoria , which was established in 1991 and is renowned by locals for its simple and honest Italian food. Just down the road is  Isola di Capri , a beachside Italian restaurant known for its housemade pizza and pasta. Gluten-free pizza bases are available, and the restaurant ensures it uses the freshest ingredients in everything it makes. Ask for a seat by the window if you can get one – the view out over the adjacent beach is just lovely.

Stay

If you're looking for a relaxing and bucolic place to stay, Five Acres  farm stay could be just the place to unwind. Spanning the titular area, the farm has views across fields to the sea and friendly chickens, goats, sheep and two highland cattle, Rory and Ivy. The guesthouse is fully equipped with everything you need, including breakfast provisions procured from the farm's resident chickens. There are three luxury guest cabins on the property, which all have the same lovely views and pastoral outlook with total privacy. Katie also has plans to offer classes in everything from beekeeping to jarring and canning in the onsite commercial kitchen, and an events space is also in the works.

Over in nearby San Remo, oft-referred to as the gateway to Phillip Island, you'll also find Silverwater Resort . Choose from studio or one, two or three-bedroom apartments, all fitted out with balconies offering sweeping views of the picturesque landscape. The resort features a heated indoor lap pool, solar-heated outdoor pool and spa pool, and if you're keen to stay active, you can enjoy lit tennis courts, basketball courts and bocce courts. For the little ones, there's table tennis, an arcade and a playground. And while you'd be remiss not to explore the nearby eateries, if you can't be fussed leaving, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel's restaurant, Watermark Restaurant and Loungebar.

Things To Do On Phillip Island (Besides The Penguin Parade)

This article on Things To Do On Phillip Island may contain affiliate links. If you click and make a purchase using these links, I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks so much for supporting Frugal Frolicker! :)

I’ll be honest: I never planned to visit Phillip Island during my year on the Australia work and holiday visa , nor during my 6-month stint living in Melbourne. I briefly entertained the idea of doing a Phillip Island excursion with my friend Nicki while she was visiting from NYC, but after a quick Google search she said what I’d been thinking: “mehhhhh, I’m not really impressed”.

I wasn’t sure that penguins and The Pinnacles (literally the only 2 things I knew existed on the island) were worth a trip there, but earlier this year I found myself in Melbourne with a handful of days between house sit and sublet and unsure of where to go. When I realized how easy it was to get to Phillip Island by public transport, I said what the heck – why not check it out.

Here’s everything you need to know about traveling solo, without a car, and on a budget to Phillip Island for a day trip or weekend trip.

Getting To Phillip Island By Public Transport

Phillip Island is a 2 hour drive from Melbourne, but it’s also very easy to get to by public transport:

  • Train to Dandenong – AU$3.90 one way, use your Myki.
  • VLine bus to Cowes (or anywhere on Phillip Island) – AU$7.60 one way to Cowes, slightly less if you’re getting off sooner. Buy ticket at the counter in Dandenong Station.
  • If the VLine bus terminates before Phillip Island, change at Anderson for the free South Coast bus to Cowes (usually it will connect with the VLine for a guaranteed transfer).

Even better, Phillip Island has recently introduced the Island Explorer bus . Operating daily through summer, this bus runs in a circuit around the island, reaching each stop every 2 hours or so from 10am-5pm. Depending on where you’re going, you may have to sit on the bus for awhile as it makes its way around the island – but with a little smart planning, you might be able to catch the bus on its way back around. Every driver I had was eager to help me get around: they’ll ask where you want to go, then offer to pick you up again later in the day, sometimes at non-designated bus stops if they know to meet you there ahead of time.

Seriously, the Island Explorer bus is a game changer for solo travelers to Phillip Island without a car. I wouldn’t have been able to see half of what I did otherwise! Between this bus and the easy connections from Melbourne, it’s very doable to travel to Phillip Island by public transport.

Where To Stay On Phillip Island

There aren’t many options for budget accommodation on Phillip Island, but the few that exist I found to be quite excellent.

Hostels on Phillip Island

At the moment, there is just one hostel on Phillip Island. The Island Accommodation YHA (AU$30-40/night for a dorm bed) in Newhaven is one of the nicest hostels I’ve ever stayed in. Everything is new and modern, the kitchen and common rooms on each floor are spacious, and all bunks have outlets so you can safely and conveniently charge your electronics. I had one of my best sleeps in a long time the first night I stayed there, but near the end of my stay there were a lot more people booked in and I woke up super early one morning due to nearby doors slamming shut. Something to be aware of if you’re a light sleeper!

Click to book a stay at The Island Accommodation YHA .

Phillip Island Camping

Bush camping isn’t allowed on the island, but there is a Phillip Island caravan park in Cowes and in San Remo if you’re looking to camp with the convenience of toilets and BBQ blocks. I had a beachfront site at Cowes Caravan Park (AU$40-55/night per campsite) and the view was downright stellar. I loved being able to walk into town via the beach rather than the road – it took me less than 15 minutes to reach the pier from the campground. One thing I didn’t love was that they charge per campsite, rather than per person (which is pretty standard in Australia) – not a problem at all if you’re sharing the site with friends, but for solo travelers it’s a bummer. Why would I pay $50 for a teeny-tiny plot of land for myself when I could spend less than that to have a comfortable bed and more amenities at a hostel? (Because of the next option, that’s why!)

It’s also worth noting that the campsites are very small and cramped together, which is typical of caravan parks in Australia. You won’t have much privacy at all if the park is booked out.

Phillip Island Glamping

Phillip Island Glamping

I highly recommend upgrading your camping experience to a glamping one, if you can swing it. Phillip Island Glamping can set you up with spacious tent (AU$120-160/night) on the campsite of your choice, all kitted out with everything you need for a comfortable stay on the island. I especially appreciated the french press, portable heater (it gets quite chilly at night, even in summer), wine glasses, and comfy air mattress. Plus, the tent is just so nicely decorated! At the moment they have a few different color schemes, but plan to expand their tent offerings once they get their own land (hopefully by next summer).

Phillip Island Glamping

Phillip Island Beaches

If you’re a beach person like I am, then you’ll be more than happy with the Phillip Island beaches. The northern coast, near Cowes, has quiet beaches with calm waters fit for swimming and boating. I didn’t find them to be the most beautiful beaches on Phillip Island, but I did find Red Rocks to be quite pretty (about a half hour walk west from Cowes Caravan Park).

Phillip Island camping

The southwest and south coast of Phillip Island is where all the surf beaches are. Surfing is absolutely massive here! Even if you don’t surf, these beaches are devastatingly beautiful and more than fit for sunbathing and wading in the water.

The aptly named Surf Beach is a stunner. How often do you see such colorful cliffs leading down to the sand?

phillip island caravan park

Woolamai Surf Beach is an insanely popular surf spot, but it’s so expansive that you’ll easily find a quiet plot of sand for yourself. The views looking south down Cape Woolamai are delightful, but the views from above the beach on the walking track are to die for!

phillip island campsites

Phillip Island Walks

The best way to enjoy Phillip Island’s glorious coastline is to walk it. Here are a few great walks on Phillip Island:

The Nobbies to the Penguin Parade

phillip island caravan park

From The Nobbies, there is a dirt path (dubbed an alternate road) that winds along the coast to where the Penguin Parade is. It’s only a few kilometers long and takes about 45 minutes if you don’t stop. For me, it was the perfect distance to cover with plenty of stops for photo ops, and still make it to the Penguin Parade bus stop within 2 hours to catch the next Island Explorer bus.

You’re gonna want to explore this part of the Phillip Island coastline – with the blowholes and plentiful rock formations, it’s absolutely a stunner.

phillip island caravan park

Cape Woolamai

If you do just one of the walks on Phillip Island, make it Cape Woolamai. In particular, the track from Woolamai Surf Beach to the Pinnacles and back is stellar. At certain points, you can see nearly the entire cape and several miles of island coastline.

READ MORE IN THIS POST: Cape Woolamai walks

phillip island beaches

San Remo is technically not on Phillip Island, but it’s the town just before the bridge onto the island and has some great coastline worth exploring. There is a coastal walk that runs south from the bridge, which provides views toward the island until it curves east along the Bass Coast. I didn’t have time to do this walk, but I did stop by the docks to watch the pelican feeding that’s done around noon every day.

Phillip Island Activities

More than any other Melbourne getaway destination , Phillip Island seems to have made massive leaps in the tourism game. As a result, there are a lot of tourist attractions on offer here – but it’s a good thing, because many of them funnel money right back into protecting the wildlife on the island.

The Nobbies

At the southwest point of Phillip Island you’ll find the Nobbies, a rocky outcrop where thousands of sea lions have made their home. You can’t see the seals from here, but you can walk along the boardwalk to catch some fantastic coastal views.

The newly-opened Antarctic Journey is worth a look if you need a break from the sun or want to get your learning on. I loved the cinema room that had numerous screens showing scenes from Antarctica.

Eco Cruise To See The Sea Lions

If you want to sea the sea lion colony at Phillip Island, hop on an eco cruise from the Cowes jetty. This is no leisurely boat ride, so if you’re prone to motion sickness you might want to think twice about taking it. En route to the seals, the captain tried to catch some waves to up the excitement factor. My butt flew off the seat a bunch of times, and all I could think was oh god, be still my stomach!

BOOK NOW: Phillip Island Cruises

There are some seriously beautiful patches of coastline once you get out toward the Nobbies. The boat stops for awhile at the sea lion rocks so you have plenty of time to watch and take photos – or in my case, plenty of time to sprawl out on some chairs and attempt to tame the motion sickness monster. I suspect I’m not the only victim, as the staff were quick to pass me a barf bag and some ginger candies to quell the nausea.

Penguin Parade

Unfortunately I missed my night to see the penguins because I was still feeling woozy from the eco cruise, but every evening you can book a ticket to watch the penguins make their nightly return to shore around dusk. Phillip Island is probably most known for its penguins, so I’d deem this a must-do if you’re going to splash out for any one paid activity here. Note that no photography of any sort is allowed during it.

Wine Tasting

You might not guess that Phillip Island hosts a couple of great wineries, but it sure does! Purple Hen Winery is open daily for $5 wine tastings (credited toward any bottle purchase). Servings are generous and plentiful – I’d been planning on enjoying a glass of Chardonnay outside there, but was well into the tipsy phase after the tasting so I bought a bottle to bring back to Cowes, which I enjoyed on the beach at sunset that night. Highly recommend their Sparkling Shiraz – it’s not something you’ll find often, and plus it’s downright delicious.

The gravel road leading to the winery is worth a wander as well: you can catch glimpses of the water from the eastern side of the island, will inevitably spot some cows grazing nearby, and may even come across a wallaby crossing the road.

Churchill Island

Not long after entering Phillip Island, you can turn north onto a road that leads to the much smaller Churchill Island. There’s a farm here with some great walking and cycling tracks that offer countryside views.

Other Activities (For Kids)

I didn’t try any of these kid-friendly activities, but they’re excellent options for families and kids at heart:

  • A Maze ‘N Things – A “world of optical illusions, mazes and puzzles that will entertain, intrigue and amuse adults and children for hours”. Also features a mini-golf course and the highest indoor vertical slide in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Koala Sanctuary – If you haven’t seen a koala up close during your Australian travels, here’s your chance.
  • Rhyll Trout & Bush Tucker Farm – You can catch a trout and they’ll cook it up for you here.

Though food isn’t a hot topic on this blog, I have to give props to The Cape Kitchen for their top notch dining experience. With their aesthetically-assembled dishes and floor-to-ceiling windows yielding front-row views of the water, this restaurant is instagram heaven. All of their dishes are made with local ingredients sourced entirely from Victoria.

The best coffee on Phillip Island is at Mendl’s Coffee House , a brand new cafe in Cowes serving Melbourne-caliber coffee. They also have a lovely space in which to linger with a book, meal, or laptop.

Disclaimer: I’d already had my 2nd trip to Phillip Island booked when I won an Instagram contest put on by Destination Phillip Island , so my prize allowed me to upgrade my trip and make a few more adventures possible. Special thanks to Phillip Island Glamping and The Cape Kitchen for some truly memorable travel experiences. Note that all opinions expressed here and elsewhere on this blog are my unbiased own, and are uninfluenced by any gifts or incentives I may receive.

Growing up on the Mornington Peninsula , visiting Phillip Island to see the Penguin Parade was a childhood rite of passage. We would have school trips out there and do school projects about what we Australian’s call Fairy Penguins. In fact, these penguins have various names. Today, they are more generally known as “little penguins”. In New Zealand, they are more commonly known as little blue penguins or blue penguins because of their slate-blue plumage.

Another reason why the Penguin Parade is so special is that it’s one of the only ways to see the little penguin which is the smallest species of penguin in the world! They grow to an average of 33 cm (13 in) in height and 43 cm (17 in) in length. They are only found on the coastlines of southern Australia and New Zealand, and there have been unconfirmed records from Chile.

Phillip Island Penguin Parade Tips - Little Penguins waddling

Luckily, in 1985, the state government stepped in and purchased every piece of property on the Summerland Peninsula with the aim to give the land to the penguins. This incredible feat was completed in 2010.

Today, these precious birds are thriving again. There are some 31,000 breeding penguins on the peninsula – a huge increase from 12,000 in the 1980s.

The number of returning penguins vary day-to-day, but the two times I saw the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, there were approximately 1900+ penguins.

What to expect at the Phillip Island Penguin Parade

Penguin parade visitor centre.

Phillip Island Penguin Parade Tips - Inside Penguin Parade Visitor Centre

This world-class and award-winning building is nestled strategically in a junction of wetland, dune, and headland. The building is environmentally friendly with 666 solar panels on its expansive roof, a water filtration system to recycle rainwater for non-potable use, increased roof and floor insulation, and double-glazed windows. Low carbon building materials were used throughout the centre’s construction, including sustainably sourced Victorian Ash hardwood for the impressive laminated beams.

Every inch of the building showcases the penguins and their habitats. Take a moment to notice the penguin feather shapes tiles in the building design and the burrows built into the walls.

Inside the centre you’ll find a wide range of facilities, including fun and interactive activities, a state-of-the-art theatre, a restaurant and café catering to all tastes and budgets, plus two retail spaces.

It’s important to note the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre is non-profit, which means all the money you spend, including your ticket, goes towards the rehabilitation, protection, and preservation of the little penguins. So, when you purchase a souvenir penguin from the gift shop, just know you’re doing your helping to protect these lovely little creatures.

There are also plenty of toilet facilities, located both outside near the car park and inside the visitor centre.

Heading out to the viewing boardwalk

Phillip Island Penguin Parade Tips - Boardwalk

Roughly 45 minutes before the penguins are due to arrive, the doors will open and staff will scan your tickets. As you exit the building, you’ll follow a wide boardwalk down towards the beach where you’ll find a spot to sit in your designated sitting area according to your ticket.

There’s no need to rush as there is plenty to see along the way. This is your chance to spot some wildlife in the grassy hills including wallabies and cape barren geese, and spot some penguin burrows – some of which may not be empty!

Phillip Island Penguin Parade Tips - Little Penguin looking around

It’s important to mention here that I was very privileged to obtain a special pass to take the photos you see in this guide. This meant I wore a lovely orange high vis jacket with “official photographer” written on the back (so visitors new I was there under special circumstances) and was accompanied by a guide who made sure I didn’t use a flash. This is no joke guys.

Throughout the visitor centre grounds and beach area, they only use special orange light filters on all light sources so as to protect the penguins’ eyesight. With barely any light and without the ability to use a flash, these are super challenging conditions to shoot in, so don’t bother whipping out your camera or smartphone. I was even told that professional photographers from National Geographic struggled to get decent shots so I’m pretty happy I was able to get a few photos to share with you.

Here come the penguins!

After the penguins come ashore

After about 20-25 minutes from seeing the first penguins arrive on the shore, the guides will start encouraging you to return to the boardwalk where you can wander around and see the penguins make their way back to their burrows, socialise or find a mating partner.

Guides are also on hand to answer any questions and share more information about their research, findings, and conservation projects that are happening at the moment.

Lights out!

travel guides phillip island

You can see the penguins all year round, so anytime is a good time, really.  If you are planning a visit from mid-December to late January, or during a Long Weekend or School Holidays period, book your tickets in advance and allow extra travel time as the traffic can get busy.

To see the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, there are a number two ways to choose from:

  • By car – If you’re making your own way down to Phillip Island by car, you can purchase tickets for the Phillip Island Penguin Parade online in advance or once you arrive at the venue. I highly recommend purchasing your ticket in advance to avoid disappointment and also avoid the queues. During the summer, tickets sell out quickly so it would be a shame to drive all that way and not get tickets. Book your tickets here.
  • Day trip – If you’re based in Melbourne, you can join this guided tour which will take care of your transportation to and from the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre to your hotel, and includes your ticket. Book your tour here

Penguin Skybox VIP Experience

For the VIP experience, there’s the Penguin Sky Box experience, where you can watch the parade unfold from above. The elevated viewing platform looks over the route the penguins take, and visitors are encouraged to join in with the rangers as they count the penguins as they come ashore. Book your tickets in advance here.

What time should I arrive?

travel guides phillip island

Access doors to the viewing areas will open approximately one hour prior to estimated penguin arrival time.

  • General Viewing and Penguins Plus ticket holders should plan to arrive at least 1 hour before penguin arrival time.
  • Underground ticket holders should plan to arrive 30 minutes before penguin arrival time.

Even in summer, it can get cold out sitting out on the beach with the sea breeze. Dress warm and in layers. Bring something soft to sit on as the seats are cold and hard. Even in Spring, you may also want to bring a blanket or you can purchase one from the gift shop.

travel guides phillip island

  • Please respect the rules and put your phone and camera away. There’s no photo you could take on your phone that is better than the photos on a postcard in the gift shop.
  • If you’re making your own way to Phillip Island by car, try to arrive earlier in the day. The gates will be open until 16:30 and you can wander through to the viewing platforms and see wildlife. This will give you the opportunity to get the lay of the land and decide where you want to sit.
  • As you wait for the penguins to arrive, keep an eye out for wallabies in the hillside to your right and seals in the water.
  • The Penguin Parade is an all-weather event that takes place outside and without shelter – pack a raincoat or umbrella if rain is predicted.
  • Not sure which ticket to get? The first time I went I got the General Viewing ticket which was great, however, the second time I got the Penguin Plus ticket. I think this offers the best value for money as it gives you more time to see the penguins up close as they waddle up the penguin highway.
  • Don’t miss the presentation by the expert guide. They share some really fascinating s facts such as the little penguin has 10,000 feathers and what looks like kissing is actually the penguins grooming each other.
  • Summerland Beach isn’t the only spot where the penguins come ashore on Phillip Island, but this is the only place where you can watch them. All along the Summerland Peninsula, the penguins have their burrows. The road to the Nobbies (located past the visitor centre) is closed by park rangers 30 minutes before sunset to ensure no vehicles or persons enter or are left inside. This is to allow the penguins to return to their burrows undisturbed.

Where to Stay on Phillip Island

Cowes is undoubtedly the main hub of the island and where most people choose to stay when visiting Phillip Island. It’s definitely the most vibrant place, with plenty of cafes, restaurants, shops, and things to do.

In and around Cowes is where you’ll find a wide variety of accommodation from caravan parks to holiday houses and oceanfront apartments.

But, to escape the hustle and bustle, you can also choose to stay in other small towns on the island. Rhyll is a historic fishing village on the east coast, with some lovely luxury stays. Staying closer to Cape Woolamai or Smiths Beach is most ideal for surfers looking to catch early breaks. Finally, Ventnor offers a nice alternative to Cowes, just west of the main town and home to some beautiful beaches.

Colour, castles and eco communities: your travel guide to Denmark’s vibrant cities, towns and islands

Danish travel is quite literally a breath of fresh air, whether you’re after walkable cities or island living

You may think you know Denmark, but the regions of this Scandinavian archipelago have their distinct attractions – from award-winning gastronomy and sustainability programmes to Viking world heritage sites and wilderness sanctuaries. What’s more, from small towns to major islands, everything’s connected via cycle-friendly train, bridge or ferry routes, making it easy to hop around.

Lively cities with small-town charm

These places may be home to Denmark’s largest communities, but the chilled vibes and outdoor lifestyle make for slow, relaxing city breaks

Your rainbow panorama.Your rainbow panorama by Olafur Eliasson at ARoS Aarhus Museum of Art

Aarhus had a big moment in the sun when it was named European capital of culture in 2017 – and it hasn’t stopped shining since. On the east coast of Jutland, the city’s circular “Your rainbow panorama” walkway above the ARoS art museum creates a dramatic impact on the skyline, while the singularly innovative urban architecture at the Aarhus Ø (redeveloped docklands) is silver and sleek. The Moesgaard Museum has a range of exhibitions charting human evolution within its impressive partly subterranean concrete design – including one of the world’s best preserved Iron Age bog bodies, Grauballe Man. The Infinite Bridge , a circular wooden structure originally conceived as a temporary art installation, is now reconstructed each spring in Aarhus Bay, allowing walkers to go on seaside promenades. Share in the Danish love of the big outdoors at Mols Bjerge National Park at Djursland, and hire your own guide to kayak or hike within the 18,000-hectare (44,480-acre) reserve.

Viking ships once sailed along the Limfjord in northern Jutland, but the city of Aalborg , with its vibrant old centre, now sits at the vanguard of design. The home town of Jørn Utzon, architect of the iconic Sydney Opera House, Aalborg’s waterfront Utzon Centre celebrates global architecture through exhibitions and education. Its neighbour, the impressively slick Musikkens Hus , has cutting-edge technology in gorgeously designed auditoriums for the best listening experience. After taking your fill of creativity, you might be in need of something more substantial – head to the international street food market at Køkkenfabrikken , or to the Aalborg Tower , which serves up edifying 360-degree views alongside Danish cuisine.

Copenhagen might be the Danish capital, but it’s a highly walkable (not to mention cycleable) city filled with harbour swimming zones and relaxed waterfront cafes – and, of course, many of the world’s very best restaurants . Wander at will through foodie hotspots in what are known collectively as the “bros”: Nørrebro, Østerbro and Vesterbro, go shopping along the pedestrianised Strøget, then make a beeline for Nyhavn, the picturesque, historic centre of Copenhagen, with its harmoniously coloured 16th and 17th century townhouses and permanently moored tall ships. Take a canal tour from here to the iconic Little Mermaid statue – but be warned, she really is very little, and best viewed up close, on foot!

Other highlights of Copenhagen include the Tivoli Gardens amusement park , the 17th-century Round Tower (Europe’s oldest working observatory), as well as Amalienborg , home to the Danish royal family. Make sure you time your visit for the daily changing of the guard, and listen to the sound of boots reverberating over the ancient courtyard cobblestones. Amalienborg’s so laid-back, you can stroll right up to photograph the beautiful rococo four-palace complex. Cross the water to explore the western side of the Copenhagen harbourfront and enjoy a range of street food stands at Reffen and The Bridge Street Kitchen . While you are on this side, take greater care at Freetown Christiania, where you need to heed the written advice on entry regarding safety – but it’s a very liberal, alternative-living enclave that’s worth taking a guided wander through.

On the island of Funen, the cultural city of Odense has produced two of Denmark’s most famous artists – the composer Carl Nielsen and Hans Christian Andersen . A whole multimedia experience opened in 2021, inviting visitors to fully immerse in the world and characters of Andersen’s fairy tales, while Nielsen’s life is celebrated in a museum and a new sound-enhanced walking trail , which is presented only in Danish but still absolutely worth it for the music. The Funen Village , where 18th- and 19th-century Danish history is brought to life – something the Danes do so well – is not to be missed. Or visit Odense in the summer for the Tinderbox music and international film festivals.

Small towns and islands with big ideas

With so many islands and small towns dotted over the Danish archipelago, there’s something on offer for every kind of visitor

Sustainable and naturally wonderful locations Samsø , in the Kattegat Sea between Jutland and Zealand, is the sunny isle that’s at the heart of eco living. Cycle around the island that was the first to generate 100% of its electricity from reneweable sources, thanks to people-power , and journey there on a new electric ferry (in operation from January 2025). Known for its horticulture too, try the typically Danish open sandwich, kartoffelmad – showcasing the island’s fabulous new potatoes, and one of the few vegetarian smørrebrød . Ærø , the idyllic, small island south of Funen, also boasts world-leading green technology, spearheaded by its community-driven initiatives.

For a taste of authentic laid-back Danish island life, though, Bornholm , in the Baltic Sea, is just perfect. A haven for summerhouse living and wild winter swimming , the fishing villages here have traditional herring smokehouses, not to mention Kadeau , perhaps the world’s only Michelin-starred restaurant in a converted beach shack – find it near the fine white sands and grassy dunes of Dueodde beach.

Windswept and beautifully wild, Skagen is Denmark’s northernmost town, poking out at the top of North Jutland, where the North Sea and Baltic waters meet. With its natural setting and oh-so-perfect light, you will be just as inspired as the French realism-influenced Skagen painters who, in the late 19th century, depicted the beauty of the seascapes here. Cosy up with a bit of hygge in the town’s quaint museums and cafes, after a walk over the dunes.

Family-friendly, educational and Unesco heritage locations It’s fair to say that the entire country of Denmark is family-friendly, but for a bit of extra fun, head to Billund ’s Legoland , the original resort built from coloured bricks. Billund is actually the town where Lego was invented by local carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen. Initially fashioning the toys from wooden blocks in the early 1930s, he moved on decades later to injection-moulded plastic. And the rest is history.

Just 45 minutes north of Copenhagen, the beautiful town of Helsingør, or Elsinore , is known to be William Shakespeare’s inspiration for Hamlet. At Kronborg Castle , where the Bard’s work is performed in scenes around the castle and grounds, you can mingle with the actors. With glorious sea views too, the old-world charm of the small town’s timber-framed houses and narrow streets make it a wonderful place to while away a lazy afternoon.

Denmark’s oldest town, Ribe , is one of the best places to experience Viking history. Stretching back to approximately AD710, the street plaques and local guides tell the story of this fascinating pre-Christian settlement. The tower at Ribe Cathedral looks out over the Unesco heritage Wadden Sea National Park and the island of Mandø , a newly certified Dark Sky Park, where seal and bird life abound.

Roskilde on the main island of Zealand is only a short drive from metropolitan Copenhagen, yet it’s full of Viking heritage. Visit the Viking Ship Museum and the medieval, Unesco-listed gothic cathedral , the resting place of 40 Danish kings and queens, including the infamous 10th-century Viking king Harald Bluetooth, who united Denmark and Norway.

At Jelling , the Viking rune stones are part of Denmark’s long history and are Unesco world heritage listed, alongside the newest entry – the country’s five Viking ring fortresses. Spanning the country from Aggersborg near Løgstør to Trelleborg close to Copenhagen, it’s possible to drop in on at least one of them, whichever part of Denmark you choose to visit next.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
