Then, once you’ve been paid, you can “cash out” and get a deposit to your bank account or use your cash card (a virtual debit card) to make purchases just like you would with your debit card.

Some apps are designed specifically for dining out, while others work better for roommates sharing living costs, or splitting the costs of group travel. The best part? These apps can drastically cut down on the number of money transfers each person has to make, and almost completely eliminates the headachy math.

For example, let’s say you take a trip with three friends. Everyone can see the shared expenses listed, and each person’s balance goes up and down as the app tracks costs over time. It also tells each person who they owe. At the end of the month, it sends reminder notices of what is owed, but a group can settle up whenever they choose. We love that the app interfaces with Venmo and PayPal since many people already use one or both. Or if someone pays in cash, the recipient can record a cash payment in the app.

How it works: Add up all the group expenses and divide among the members for easy payment. Multiple members can be added to an expense. So, for example, say two people cover the cost of a boat tour for five, add all five to the expense, and the app will tally who owes how much to whom. No need to register for an account, a feature that people especially like.

Plates by Splitwise (iOS)

If you already use Splitwise, this integrated free app is designed specifically for dining out. It gets rave reviews for its ease-of-use functionality, and the visuals make it a snap to use. 

How it works: Everyone in the group gets their own “plate” and you drag their menu items to their plate. If several people share something like an appetizer or dessert, those items can be shared among those plates (or among the whole group if ordered that way). If two people are paying together, their plates can be “stacked.” The app calculates tax and tip portions, and notifies users by email or text of their total. A couple limitations: it limits group size to 10 and it’s only available on iOS. 

Tab (iOS, Android)  

An alternative to Plates, this dining-out app steps in for Android users and larger groups. It allows you to upload a photo of the receipt so each person can access the same bill from their phones and claim their items. In fact, it’s one of the few apps that allows you to upload a photo for free. 

How it works: Each person taps the items they ordered from the receipt, or, if sharing, multiple people can tap the same item and the cost gets divvied up. Tax and tip also are split up proportionately. Tab keeps activity synced in real time, and individualized totals go out to each person. 

The app interfaces with Venmo for easy payment or allows you to record a cash payment from someone. One thing to know—Tab doesn’t allow uploading older photos of receipts from your camera roll to square up later, so you’ll want to handle splitting the bill in the moment.

Venmo (iOS, Android)

Just in case you don’t already use Venmo, here’s the rundown. 

How it works: Venmo lets you send to and request payment from another person. Soon, it became a big hit among travelers because it was an easier and less awkward way of divvying trip expenses. There will be so many expenses you have to bear on the go, and keeping track of who owes who and who owes what is not easy. With apps like Splitwise, you no longer have to share cold glances, break into arguments, or empty your wallet on behalf of your friends. 

There is both a web and mobile version to use. The Splitwise app is available for both Android and iOS devices.

Does Splitwise Charge a Fee?

Splitwise offers a free version that has most of its core features. However, for those who rely on the app frequently, its Pro version has some interesting additions in store. It costs $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year.

How Does Splitwise Work?

After creating an account with Splitwise, create a “Group” by adding all your friends and their contact numbers. This way, your friends are constantly updated while being able to add expenses from their end. 

Whenever you want to add an expense, click “Add bill” and enter all the required information like the amount, people who owe money, date, etc., along with a picture if necessary. Click “Save” after adding each bill/expense you encounter during the trip.

At the end of the trip, you need to settle and clear the debts, yeah? Click “Settle Up,” and you will see the amount you owe each travel mate separately. You can either pay by cash and record it as a “cash payment” or pay using PayPal or Venmo.

You also don’t have to maintain spreadsheets and spend time doing calculations. The app got the basics right! 

• Debt simplification

When you travel together, everyone starts spending on behalf of everyone at some point, and we think it can be sorted and cleared at the end. Without an app to manage shared expenses, it can easily become a complicated mess. Splitwise tracks every amount lent and borrowed, balancing out the dues, so there are only a few transactions you have to clear at the end.

Splitwise has some handy features that help travelers manage their shared expenses effectively. The ability to create different groups, record expenses in different currencies, categorize expenses, and simplify debts is important when you travel with friends or family. We like how this app is very detailed, although it comes with a bit of complexity. 

What We Don’t Like About Splitwise

• Lack of in-app payment facility 

There’s no way to pay your friends directly via the app. If you have PayPal or Venmo installed, you will be directed to the app so you can make the payment. If your country doesn’t support either, it’s just cash. Also, the user has to record whenever a debt is settled via cash or another mode of payment. It could be better if there’s an in-app payment feature that would help you pay directly and record payments automatically.

• May not get everyone on board

If you have old-school friends who refuse to stray away from manual methods, Splitwise may not be the best choice. One, everyone involved in the trip has to sign up and check emails frequently for updates. Excessive emails, in some cases, can also be annoying. Second, it takes some time for users to familiarize themselves with the app. 

Is Splitwise Worth It?

Yes! Unless you have already found a better app, we think you should definitely consider this. The free version offers all the main features, although including the currency conversion feature would have been even better. An app to manage shared expenses is a must for people who travel in groups as it minimizes the chance for disputes and eases stress. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of these apps, which make divvying up expenses easy and can be used for more than just dining out. They can help friends split vacation costs or group gifts, or assist roommates in divvying up the grocery bill , for example. Most apps work for any phone and are free or cheap to download.

“They’ve been a huge benefit to the restaurant industry. It can get tense when customers start arguing over the check, debating who paid for what. So anything that helps make the servers’ lives a little easier at the register or table, I’m all for,” says Buddy Foy, Jr., owner of The Chateau On The Lake, in Bolton Landing, New York, and The Chateau Anna Maria, in Anna Maria Island, Florida.

Foy says that in recent years, bill-splitting apps have become pretty popular. Most people don't use them, but Foy estimates that about 20% of his customers do.

So with that in mind, here are six of the most popular bill-splitting apps:

This app is free (although there’s a pro version for $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year), and it allows for splitting the cost of a bill among multiple people.

This app allows you to pay the establishment via PayPal or Venmo – and if someone pays with cash, no worries. You can record that cash payment so people know that part of the bill was paid.

Best feature: What if a friend doesn’t have the money for the restaurant bill right now? The app will track that person’s balance , so while one or several people may actually pay for the meal on the spot, the person who still owes money can view their balance and chip away at it or pay it all at once.

This app is pretty similar to Splitwise in ease of use. Settle Up can work well for groups of friends (no limit on how many friends) who are traveling together or an apartment full of roommates. The entire group can see their expenses and who has paid what – and who hasn’t paid their share of, say, the electric bill.

It's free, although there is a premium version that costs $1.49 a month or $10.99 a year.

Best feature: If you’re eating at a restaurant, you have a pretty good idea of who ate what. But what if you’re splitting a cost where you have no idea what was spent? Maybe you and a group of people are splitting the cost of throwing a party, for instance, and your friend just went to the store and bought a bunch of supplies. With this app, you can share photos of receipts with the people you’re settling up with. If there’s a trust factor that you’re dealing with, it may help that the person who bought everything can show you a receipt and prove that they weren't exaggerating how much something cost.

Plates by Splitwise

This is an app solely designed for eating at restaurants in a group – and it’s associated with the Splitwise app. You can use it to split the meal for up to 10 people.

Best feature: The nice thing about this app (which so far is only for iPhones) is that you can fix it for the people who want to split a restaurant bill evenly, but you can also manage it if some people in the group are ordering cocktails or appetizers and others aren't chipping in for those.

The app Tab is especially good for splitting a bill at restaurants – especially among large groups.

Best feature: Generally, a bill-splitting app will help you tally up how much you owe for a meal, but you still have to deal with the hassle of paying for your meal.

Tab allows everyone to pay separately for their meal without making the server produce separate checks. You take a picture of the receipt, and the app reads the items (so nobody has to input the numbers of the order into the app). You then look at your phone and tap the items you ordered. You actually make your payment by using Venmo – which works in tandem with the app – and you can record any cash payments if someone wants to pay with cash.

Weird name, helpful app. Plus, you've got to love the tag line on the Splid website: "Split bills not friendships."

This is a good bill-splitting app for groups of friends or family members who are traveling together. You can add all of the expenses that are piling up, and then split them among your fellow companions. What’s more, you can do this in more than 150 currencies. The app is free.

Best feature: You can pay more than one person. Let’s say that two people purchased different kinds of camping gear, but you’ve got six people on the trip. Well, the four remaining campers can then pay the two campers through the Splid app.

Snap & Split Bill

This app is also free. You simply snap a photo of the receipt – from a restaurant or a grocery store, for example – and you can quickly divvy up the expenses and then share the bill.

Maybe there’s an item on the bill that you didn’t partake in – appetizers at a restaurant, for instance – the people who did partake can select that, and the people who didn’t won’t be charged.

Best feature: It may not be the best feature – that would simply be how the app works in general – but a unique feature is its receipt organizer, which can help if you use the app a lot and want to look back at your history of sharing expenses.

7 Apps That Make It Simple to Split the Bill

Good things come in big packages, like ordering a steer directly from the local farmer or pooling your neighborhood grocery shopping into one big Costco run. But figuring out who owes what can be a spreadsheet nightmare. Luckily, we've rounded up seven of our favorite apps to help you eliminate receipt hoarding forever.

Free for Android , iPhone

Splittr makes splitting bills super easy. You simply create the trip or event, then add individual expenses for that activity. From there, you can add the parties involved in that activity and how much each person contributed thus far. Then the app does its magic and figures out each person's current balance, as well as who owes what (and to whom) at the end of the trip.

Splitwise is a favorite of the WIRED Gear team. It has a more attractive and user-friendly interface and a pro version that lets you track spending by category, store high-resolution receipts, and convert bills by exchange rate if you're splitting expenses with people in other countries. Splitwise also makes an additional app called Plates by Splitwise that's designed specifically for splitting restaurant (takeout) bills. One caveat: You can't pay up inside the app—you've got to use real life money, or do that using another app ... like Venmo!

Free for Android , iPhone , Web (limited features)

Venmo is the way to go for things like paying a friend back for lunch, or paying rent or bills to a master tenant (or tech-savvy landlord). If your roommates owe you money for rent, they can either send you the money they owe through the app (free of charge if you use a debit card or connect your bank account), or you can send a charge for them to fulfill. You can complete the payment in the app, or do so by replying to a text message notification with a specific code. Venmo was acquired by PayPal, but the app experience is more friendly, social, and streamlined than PayPal's app.

GroupMe is mostly a group chatting service, but it does have a feature called Split. This is great for funding a group event, or requesting compensation after the fact. In a GroupMe group, simply click the paperclip icon to the left of the message compose field, tap collect, and enter how much each person owes you. Folks pay via credit card (there's a 3.5 percent charge plus 30 cents for each contributor), and you're notified when everyone has ponied up. If someone doesn't have the app, you can get and share a custom link for them to pay over the web.

Another option for splitting bills among a group is SettleUp . You can create a group and all its members will be able to see expenses and add to them. It works for travel groups, roommates, couples, and anyone else who needs a way to keep expenses and bills organized.

Another option for sending and receiving money between friends or contacts is Square Cash or Google Pay . Both services also let you send and receive money via email. With Square Cash, just link your debit card to your account, then enter the recipients email address, Cc [email protected] on the email, and enter the amount in the subject line. If you want to request money, it's the same process, but you Cc [email protected] instead. It's all done in the app. With Google Pay, you can send or receive money for free from a linked bank account, or send money with a 2.9 percent transaction fee with a debit or credit card. You can also tap the "Attach Money" icon in Gmail to send it via email.

Users love TripMate for its simplicity and easy-to-use features, plus it’s all free. This travel expense tracker app lets you create a trip and then add and remove users as needed. You can add expenses, receive a personalized summary, and even get hotel, and other booking-related information.

Trail Wallet

If you’re looking for a travel-specific budget tool and expense tracker, this is your best bet. Input your expenses into Trail Wallet and the app will split them up based on category so you can get a closer look at your spending. Note that only the first 25 items you enter are free.

Keeping track of travel expenses can be challenging. With paper receipts, email receipts and not being handed any receipt at times, it's important to be organized for both the business and leisure traveler.

Fortunately, for those who are not the best at having a good grasp on their expenses, there are many apps that can simplify your life. These apps help with expense reports, budgeting purposes, tax preparation and splitting expenses among friends.

With something for everyone, here are the best apps to help you keep track of your expenses.

TrabeePocket

TrabeePocket is a straightforward app that allows you to keep track of your expenses for a given trip. Before you even start your trip you can add all prepaid expenses to the "preparing" tab. This allows you to account for your flights and any tours you might have booked in advance. Once your trip begins you can easily add all additional travel expenses. You can categorize your expenses into eight different categories, but with the paid version, you can add as many additional categories as you want if you have very specific expenses you want to track. The free version also only allows you to track one currency per trip, but the paid version allows you to track multiple currencies in one trip file.

Not only will TrabeePocket serve as a place to file your expenses, it also helps you on the budgeting front as well. You can set a monthly budget and have your expenses track against that overall number. If you are earning income during your travel, you can also enter income to a specific trip expense.

One neat feature of this app is that you can take pictures and tie it to a specific expense. This is great for the backpacker or family traveler who wants to remember exactly what the expense was used for, or to keep track of trip suggestions. Business travelers can also use this feature by taking a picture of a receipt if it is needed for a corporate expense report.

Cost: Free; Upgraded version is $1.99 and includes some additional options (i.e., multiple currencies, additional categories, view and export expense report)

Trail Wallet

Trail Wallet is very similar to TrabeePocket, but unfortunately is not available to Android users. With this app, you can add as many categories as you want to separate expenses and everything is color coded to make the app more visually appealing. (Unlike TrabeePocket, you do not need to pay for an upgraded version to add more categories).

When you enter your travel expenses, you'll tie it to both a trip and a date. This allows you to view your expenses at a Month View or Trip View. You can also spread expenses across multiple dates so you can see your daily expenses for a certain trip. This is handy if you are on a daily budget to ensure you're not exceeding the amount you can spend on a particular day.

One nice feature of this app is that you can add as many currencies as you'd like within a certain trip. This comes in handy if you are paying in multiple currencies — for example, flight and hotel costs in USD, but food expenses in euros.

This app caters more toward individual or family travel as you cannot invite friends to add expenses. You can, however, take pictures of receipts and tie them to a specific expense, and then export the images — perfect for keeping all receipts or for business travelers for expense purposes.

Cost: Free for the first 25 expense items added to a single trip; Upgraded version is $4.99 which allows you to enter an unlimited number of expenses per trip.

Concur is one of the top expense programs for business travel. This app is definitely more involved then some of the others on the list, but it has all the bells and whistles for keeping your expenses fully organized. If you work for a large corporation, you might already find that this is the required app to use for your business expenses.

Expenses from corporate credit cards will automatically be uploaded and you can also manually add out-of-pocket expenses. For manually entered expenses, employees can take a picture of their receipt which will be included in their expense report. For the business traveler with many paper receipts during the week, this app helps ensure that all expenses are reimbursed properly.

If you run a small-business, this is a great platform for you and your employees to use as it allows you to manage expenses and prepare expense reports. When I worked for a large consulting company, I used this program on a weekly basis. Being able to keep track of my work expenses to ensure I was reimbursed with every amount paid out of pocket was huge. For solo and group travelers, this is not the app I suggest using as there is no need to pay the monthly fee as there are many other free apps available.

Tripcoin is a very simple app to use that will track all of your expenses against a particular trip. You can tie each expense to a specific category, enter a city location and a defined date and time. You can also include notes and a screen shot to keep better track of every purchase you make.

This app has an atheistically pleasing filter capability, where you can look at expenses between a given date, within a certain category, a type of payment method or within a particular country. There is also a real-time currency converter or you can set custom currency exchange rates if needed.

Best of all, you can automatically back up all of your data by enabling the Dropbox integration. With many of the other apps listed here, if you lose your phone or if your data gets wiped out, you will lose all of the expenses entered. If this does happen, with this specific app, all of your expenses are saved and can be re-imported.

Unfortunately, this app is only available for iPhone users.

SplitWise is one of my personal favorites and an app I've been using for years. If you are traveling in a group , this is the app for you. The best, and unique feature, is that you can have friends or family members join a group and everyone can enter all expenses incurred for the joint trip. The app will then itemize expenses and tell each individual how much they owe to make things equal. You can even designate which expenses should be split among certain individuals. Like most of the other apps, you can also take include a picture and notes for every expense entered.

I have used the app for friend and sibling trips, including bachelorette parties, group ski trips and even just day trips. Aside from travel expenses, you can even use it to split up expenses among roommates or just everyday purchases with friends.

Cost: Free; Upgraded version is $2.99/month ($29.99/year) which includes receipt scanning, currency conversion and more.

Tricount is a simple app, but a great choice for group travel . It works very similar to SplitWise where you can split expenses among multiple travelers in your group. Everyone can add their own expenses and designate the specific amount (or percentage) for each individual within the group. At the end of the trip, you'll then receive a breakdown of what everyone owes each other.

The app supports multiple currencies and allows you to take pictures of images or receipts to go along with every expense entered.

Cost: Free; Upgraded version is $0.99 and allows you to have an ad-free experience.

If keeping track of receipts is high on your priority list, then the Foreceipt app will be perfect for your needs. You can attach a receipt with all expenses entered and all images will automatically be saved to your Google Drive account. Additionally, all email receipts can be tracked as well by forwarding them directly to Foreceipt email address and including your unique ID.

Other features include the capability to batch upload bank transactions and downloading excel reports for tax return purposes — perfect for those who need to write off travel expenses.

Within the app, Foreceipt allows you to enter your income, bills and travel expenses to track against your overall budget. You can also tie all travel expenses to one of many pre-populated categories.

With these more involved capabilities, business travelers and those who own small businesses will probably find this app more useful than solo or group travelers.

Cost: Free; Upgraded version is $3.99/month ($38.99/year) and includes more receipts scans per month, email receipts and expense reports.

Expensify caters toward both individual and group travelers traveling primarily for business. This app allows you to complete all the simple tasks such as documenting your expenses and taking a picture of your receipt, but goes one step further where you can submit your expenses to your manager or accountant (or really whomever you'd like).

For those who need to keep track of mileage driven, this app allows you to not only manually enter your information but also has a GPS calculator which you can turn on to track your distance. You can also enter your time worked, which helps those needing to track billable hours.

The app also features more than just a place to submit your expenses, as you can keep track of business operations and even set expense policies.

On the feel good front, Expensify will also donate $2 for every $1,000 in expenses to Expensify.org. These donations are given to a broad range of campaigns to help organizations around the world.

Cost: Free up to five scans a month; Upgraded version is $4.99/month per user giving you unlimited scans and additional automatic capabilities.

All you have to do is provide your income and spending information. PocketGuard will calculate your disposable income accordingly. Vacation planning may not be a priority for you if you’re in debt, but PocketGuard will recommend a strategy for paying it off in the most efficient way. You can use PocketGuard to set financial goals, save money and plan for future travel as a reward.

If you’re a seasoned business traveler, you may already be familiar with the Concur suite (and in some cases, you may be required by your employer to use it). If you aren’t, get ready to meet one of the most robust, full-featured business travel solutions available today.

Within the SAP Concur suite, you’ll find separate modules for managing travel plans and submitting reimbursement requests for travel-related expenses. Concur Expense’s ExpenseIt app for travel expenses makes it easy to take pictures of your paper receipts and automatically categorize them to submit as expense reports. Bachelorette parties can be challenging in so many ways, but the BACH app simplifies things with budgeting and planning tools designed to make bachelorette parties less stressful. Users can budget, plan and book all activities associated with their bachelorette party. You can even add your friends to the app to communicate and make planning decisions easier, as well as divide up expenses in the app.

While BACH is marketed around bachelorette parties, you can use it to book any type of group activity in participating cities. Use it to plan your girls’ getaway, Friendsgiving, reunion or virtually any other excuse to gather close friends. The BACH app is free to use, though there is a processing fee when you make a booking.

Trabee Pocket

The Trabee Pocket app provides both budget and expense tracking in a user-friendly interface. Trabee lets you set a budget and then enter your expenses to track how much you’re spending in different categories. The advent of foldable phones means there are more ways to view multiple apps at once. It also means there are more ways opening apps in a split screen can go wrong. This expanded split screen functionality means that if your apps constantly open in split-screen, even when you don't want them to, there isn't a reason why this is happening. However, there are plenty of ways to solve this problem.

Quick fixes to stop apps opening in split-screen

Apps always opening in a split screen can be the fault of bugs or temporary software glitches. These can cause apps to become locked to a part of your phone or refuse to open correctly. So, before diagnosing specific problems, check for an update . If an update is available, installing it may fix the bug causing your apps to open in a split screen. This can also solve problems with split screen apps on your Chromebook.

After downloading the software update, restart your device. This has the additional benefit of force closing apps. If an app is stuck in a split screen, restart your Android phone to fix buggy or broken apps.

If apps still open in split screen mode automatically after installing an update or restarting your device, the problem is likely a setting or feature you unknowingly turned on. The most common cause is Samsung's Edge Panel feature, which is an easy fix.

Samsung phones and tablets are the most susceptible to apps automatically opening in a split screen for two reasons. The first is the Edge Panel, and the second is the multiwindow settings. We show you how to fix problems with split screen apps caused by both features.

Method 1: Change split screen settings in the Edge Panel

If your apps only open in a split screen when opened from the Edge Panel, you can disable it by going to the Edge Panel settings. All apps opened from the Edge Panel can be opened in a split screen by tapping or by touching and holding them. Here's how to toggle the setting:

• Open the Edge panel by swiping in from the panel edge.
• Tap the pencil icon at the bottom of the Edge panel.
• Tap the three-dot button in the upper-right corner of your screen.
• Select Touch and hold under the Open in split screen view .

Method 2: Disable advanced features

Samsung's phones contain features that make multitasking easier by viewing multiple apps at the same time. Some of these are experimental and can only be toggled through the Labs section on your phone. Here's how to find this menu:

• Open the Settings app.
• Scroll down and tap Advanced Features .

We recommend turning off all these features to prevent issues with split screen apps on your phone. However, if you'd prefer to keep as many open as possible, turn off Multiwindow for all apps and Swipe for split screen . After you toggle these settings, restart your phone.

You can also adjust Flex mode settings from this screen, but this usually doesn't cause apps to always open in a split screen. However, if you only have problems with a single app, toggle off Flex mode for that app.

How to stop apps opening in split screen on any Android phone

Other Android manufacturers like Google and Motorola don't provide the same level of multiwindow functionality as Samsung. This means they don't have the same problem of apps always opening in a split screen. However, if you use a foldable phone from a manufacturer other than Samsung (such as the Google Pixel Fold or the OnePlus Open), you may need to stop your apps from always opening in a split screen. Here are some quick ways to stop an app from opening in a split screen on any Android phone.

Check your screen orientation before you open an app

If your Pixel Fold opens some (but not all) apps in a split screen when using the inner display, it's likely because these apps only support portrait orientation. This means the Fold's inner screen (which is landscape) forces these apps to open in a split screen on one half of your screen. There isn't a fix for this when using the Fold in landscape mode, but rotating it before opening these apps will open them in full screen.

Open your apps the way you want

Android apps always opening in split screen mode can be frustrating, but there are ways to fix it. If nothing you do seems to work, factory reset your Android device . This resets every setting to default and uninstalls apps that may be causing problems.

Bethenny Frankel and Fiancé Paul Bernon Split After 6 Years Together

The couple got engaged in March 2021 after three years of dating

Bethenny Frankel is newly single.

The Skinnygirl mogul, 53, split from her fiancé Paul Bernon , 45, after six years together, PEOPLE has learned.

The breakup comes after Frankel announced the death of her mother, Bernadette Birk , at the end of April. She had been suffering from lung cancer, the Real Housewives of New York   City   alum revealed in an Instagram post .

Frankel's rep did not immediately return PEOPLE's request for comment about the breakup, which Us Weekly was first to report.

Frankel and the real estate developer and film producer first met on a dating app in 2018. "I was pretty lucky when I walked in and saw him," Frankel told PEOPLE two years later of their first date. "He had a twinkle. He came as advertised — better than advertised. He overshot the mark."

They went Instagram official in December 2018, and Frankel gushed that he had "enriched [her] life immeasurably" as she celebrated his birthday in July 2019.

They briefly separated in October 2020, and Frankel said during an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show days later that she was "really happy" despite the split . "We've had a great, great relationship," she said. "Not everything has to end badly. Some things just don't continue and it's not negative, it's just life."

They rekindled things in January 2021, and two months later, PEOPLE exclusively confirmed that they were engaged .

Bernon popped the question "on an island off of Florida" in an "intimate" proposal , Frankel shared at the time. "No makeup, no manicure, no ring photos. It was very simple and beautiful."

She gushed of her fiancé, "Paul's an absolutely beautiful person and it's an exciting, fun time."

At the time, she had just finalized her divorce from Jason Hoppy, nearly eight years after the initial filing, with whom she shares daughter Bryn .

Bernon's role in Frankel's life was also "amazing" because of how "good" of a "partner" he was , she told PEOPLE in November 2022.

"He's a good friend. He's a good dad. So everything's good. Everything is really good," she said on the PEOPLE Every Day podcast .

In December 2022, nearly two years after their engagement, Frankel told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that they hadn't set a date for the wedding yet .

"I don't know when we'll get married," she said. "I'm happily in a partnership and I love him so much abut I don't want to plan a wedding."

She continued to make it clear that a traditional wedding was not in the cards for her, as she said on Today with Hoda & Jenna in June 2023, "I'm never gonna plan a wedding," as she and Bernon were already married in their minds.

"We love each other. We're great life partners. We are married. I just don't want to go through what everyone else wants us to do."

Human-sounding AI can plan, help book your travel. But can you trust it?

It wasn’t so long ago that travelers planned trips without the internet.

“Back in the day, our parents used to go to these travel agents and really kind of express what they were looking for and what kind of vacation they wanted,” said Saad Saeed, co-founder and CEO of Layla, an AI travel planner whose website launched this year. “Slowly, we kind of acclimatized ourselves to start using these search boxes, clicks, these forms and filters.”

Artificial intelligence-driven tools like Layla can now turn back the clock on that experience, engaging with users almost like humans to customize travel plans with lightning speed plus all the resources of the web. But does AI actually make travel planning easier and can it compare to human expertise? 

Yes and no. Here’s why.

Can AI actually understand us?

It can try. 

“What are you personally looking for in this trip and what do you want out of it?” asked Saeed. “Do you want to reconnect with your partner, for example, or do you want to just feel some adventure and thrill?” 

A human travel agent may ask a series of questions to understand a client’s needs. So can generative AI , which picks up on keywords. Mindtrip, an AI planner launched publicly on May 1, has an actual travel quiz that asks users to rank priorities like “Is your ideal vacation day an exhilarating adventure or a relaxing break?” using sliding scales.

“What we get at the end of that quiz, using the AI, is a really customized description,” explained  Mindtrip Founder and CEO Andy Moss. That then informs what the AI suggests to the traveler. 

Informed suggestions can save users time in narrowing down destinations and experiences, as well as  introduce places users may never have discovered on their own.

Can AI fully replace humans?

No. Layla may sound human, using conversational phrases like “I've got three cozy nests that won't make your wallet cry.”

“She has a personality. We try to make her funny and so on, where it's really that friend that can get to know you and then recommend you the perfect stuff,” Saeed said.

But part of Layla’s expertise comes from the real-life experiences of some 1,600 travel content creators  the Berlin-based platform has partnered with. Their videos and insights can give users a richer picture of what to expect.

Mindtrip also leans on human expertise, having tapped a limited group of travel influencers for curated content with plans to eventually open it up so anyone can share their travel itineraries and experiences with the public.

Is AI a threat to privacy?

With all the rapid advancements in AI in just the past year, some users are wary of its safety .

“Data privacy is definitely one of our biggest concerns, and we ensure that none of the personal identifiable information ever reaches basically the model providers. That will all stay with us,” Layla’s Saeed said. “None of their personally identifiable data can ever be basically used to profile them or basically go into any of these systems, which are training these different models.”

Booz Allen Hamilton, the nation’s largest provider of AI to the federal government , focuses heavily on ethical and  secure AI, as well as adhering to the government’s policies on data collection. 

“We collect as little information as we can in order to provide a secure transaction,” said Booz Allen Hamilton Senior Vice President Will Healy, who heads up their recreation work, including Recreaton.gov , the government’s central travel planning site for public lands like national parks. “We don't save your searches. We don't save your credit card data. We're very careful about the data that we store.”

Yoon Kim, an assistant professor in MIT’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory , isn’t too worried about security in the initial brainstorming stages of travel planning with AI.

“I don't see, at this point, how AI-generated advice is spiritually different from travel guide articles that you might read on certain websites,” he said. “Travel planning is one really nice use case of these models, as narrow as it is, because it's a scenario in which you want to be given ideas but you don't actually need to commit to them.” 

What’s next for AI? 

Things could be different, though, if AI is used beyond trip planning. Deloitte sees AI being woven into all parts of travel.

“There is an opportunity for a real engine – I'm going to just use a generic term, engine – that allows you to search and pull it all together and to sort based off of your personal reasons for prioritization and then not stopping at ‘hey give me a list’ or ‘here's what to do,’ but ‘OK, now go create my itinerary, help me book it, track it all the way through that travel process,” said Matt Soderberg, principal, U.S. airlines leader for Deloitte. 

Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report, released in early April, identifies seven stages where AI can intersect with a trip, from personalized recommendations based on past travel, online purchases and tendencies to day-of issues to a post-travel pulse, where travelers may be asked about their experience and start thinking about future trips. 

“When you solve across all of those, that's going to be the Holy Grail,” Soderberg said. “The difficulty is that doesn't all sit in one place. And so how do you get the right information and the right data to bring all of that together for a single experience for the consumer? And who's going to own that?”

Layla and Mindtrip, among others, already offer booking through partners like Booking.com. “It's all about making things actionable,” Moss said.

But for now, if issues come up mid-trip, AI tools can’t fix them like humans can. Humans still have to get involved.
