Understanding Your Needs: What Makes a Great Travel Gym Bag?

Before we delve into our top picks for the Best Gym Bags for Travelers, let’s understand the elements that make a gym bag great for travel.

Size And Capacity

When it comes to gym bags, size does matter! You’ll need something compact enough to fit in overhead compartments or under the seat in front of you. Make sure it is spacious enough to hold your gym gear and travel essentials.

Keep in mind that most airlines have specific size limits for carry-on luggage and personal items. While these limits can vary between airlines. The size of carry-on is different from the size of a personal bag.

A common carry-on size limit is 22″ x 14″ x 9″ (including handles and wheels), and the limit for personal items (like a gym bag) is often 18″ x 14″ x 8″. Always be sure to check the specific restrictions of the airline you’re flying with to avoid any surprises at the gate.

The Best Gym Bags for Travelers are those that maximize usage of the allowed dimensions, providing the most packing space possible while still being airline-friendly. They’ll often feature clever design solutions, like expandable compartments or multiple pockets, to help you organize your items and make the most of the space available.

Material And Durability

Next up, material and durability. A good gym bag for travelers should have a weather-resistant exterior and should be made of long-lasting materials to withstand the rigors of travel.

Compartments And Organization

The Best Gym Bags for Travelers are those that boast a good number of compartments for easy organization. Look for bags that offer separate areas for clean and dirty clothes, plus pockets for small items like keys, wallets, or headphones.

Comfort And Portability

Finally, consider comfort and portability. The bag should feature quality straps and handles, and it shouldn’t be too heavy when empty, making it easier to carry around.

What Gym Equipment Can I Take In My Carry On?

The answer to this question is trickier than it might initially seem. While your favorite dumbbells might be a no-go, there are plenty of compact and TSA-friendly gym equipment options you can fit in your carry-on luggage.

Let’s discuss some of the fitness gear you can conveniently pack in your gym bag to keep your workouts on track, no matter where your travels take you:

  • Jump Rope: This classic piece of cardio equipment can easily be packed into your gym bag. However, remember that the handles could potentially be seen as a weapon during security checks. Although most airports will allow it, it’s always a good idea to check in advance.
  • Sliders: Sliders are fantastic for a total body workout, particularly core exercises. The best part? They’re light, flat, and easy to slip into your bag.
  • Travel Yoga Mat: Specially designed to be lightweight and foldable, travel yoga mats are an excellent addition to your carry-on luggage. They will enable you to continue your yoga routine no matter where you find yourself.
  • In addition to the above list, you can take lifting gloves, shoes, and workout clothing, then use the facilities gym room.

Verywell Fit / Jessica Murtaugh

Whether you’re new to the gym or a seasoned regular, a well-designed gym bag can make your workouts more efficient, organized, and enjoyable. But before you buy, think about what kind of bag is right for you based on your workout routine, says Nicholas Duran, NASM, CPT, a yoga and fitness instructor based in Los Angeles, California.

When determining what type of gym bag you need, think about whether you're going to take a class or work out on your own. You should also consider whether your workouts tend to require special equipment, like cycling shoes or a pickleball paddle . If you play a team sport, you might need a bag that can hold special accessories or bulky protective gear. But if you’re exercising alone, a more streamlined bag might be sufficient to keep you prepared and organized.

The right gym bag should be comfortable, durable, easy to clean, and spacious enough to hold all your essentials. It should also be the right size and designed for your body to avoid back strain, especially when it’s full.

To find the best gym bags, we asked fitness experts which features set the top models apart. Then, we researched dozens of options and even tested a few top-selling gym bags, evaluating them based on the quality of construction and materials, size, storage, design, price, and more. We also had a certified personal trainer from our Review Board review this story for accuracy and the best way to shop for a functional, organized gym bag.

Why Trust Verywell Fit

Best women's overall, under armour ua undeniable signature duffle bag.

under-armour

Versatile outer storage

No interior pocket

Few color options

Crossbody strap isn’t padded

The lightweight, spacious Undeniable Signature bag from Under Armour is our top overall pick for women because it’s made from durable polyester and can hold plenty of gear without weighing you down. It has separate compartments to keep things fresh and pockets on both ends—a vented pocket for shoes or clothes and a mesh pocket for a water bottle or other essentials.

Forget your hair tie at home? No sweat! The zipper pull on the third front pocket doubles as a strand-friendly hair elastic. The bag has elastic straps on the front for a yoga mat or foam roller, making it a handy studio-class companion.

Its impressive side pocket extends the full length of the bag for gear, garments, books, small electronics, and more. The main compartment’s top-entry flap is easy to access while wearing. And we love that the large, interior mesh pocket keeps personal items handy, although some may need more interior organization. While this newly updated duffle only comes in a few colors, its stylish options make for a nice carry-on or weekender bag outside the gym.

Key Specs: Dimensions: 20 x 9 x 10.5 inches | Storage Capacity: 31 liters | Materials: Polyester | Compartments: 4 | Water-Resistant: Yes | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles, elastic front straps

Best Men's Overall

Nike duffel bag.

Padded shoulder strap

Large capacity for bigger items

Lots of compartments

May be too big for some

This super spacious bag is our top pick for men thanks to its large capacity and choice of six compartments to keep you organized for every heavy and long haul. Whether you’re heading to lift or catching a pickup game, you can toss large gear in the main compartment and keep small items safe in the small pocket. Like Under Armour’s Undeniable Duffle, this bag has pockets on each end and a large, zippered front pocket.

What we love most is this bag’s bottom compartment, which is great for wet clothes or sweaty shoes. And the durable bottom of the bag is waterproof, so it can withstand rough courts and wet locker room floors. We appreciate the long, adjustable crossbody strap that fits a variety of heights, a shoulder pad for heavy carrying, and velcroed handles to keep the bag stable en route.

This sustainably-made Nike bag is unisex, budget-friendly, and comes in a few neutral color schemes and prints—it’s a class for years to come.

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 25 x 12 x 12 inches | Storage Capacity: 60 liters | Materials: Polyester | Compartments: 5 | Water-resistant: Yes | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles

Best Unisex

Under armour undeniable 5.0 duffle.

Many sizes and color options

Structured design

Comes in many colors

Crossbody strap isn’t padded for smaller sizes

In its fifth version to date, Under Armour’s Undeniable 5.0 Duffle Bag is popular for versatility, storage, and affordability. We love that it comes in five sizes (XXS-XXL) and many colors, so you can choose the best bag for you. The water-resistant coating helps to protect your gear with plenty of pockets, inside and out, to tote and protect your gear.

We love the exterior loops to clip your keys or other items to and the mesh slip pocket, which can hold several water bottles in slots on the small size and above. We also like that even the x-small bag has a couple of side compartments for separating shoes and sweaty clothes.

This bag has a bit more structure than others thanks to its TPU-coated and foam-lined bottom and side, which helps to keep even the bigger sizes from feeling floppy. The larger sizes dwarf many of the largest duffles on our list and are excellent for transporting gear for field or court sports, boxing, and more. The one downside is that the smallest sizes don’t have a removable, padded shoulder strap.

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 8.2 x 7.5 x 15.6 to 16.5 x 16.1 x 33.5 inches | Storage Capacity: 18 to 144 liters | Materials: Polyester | Compartments: 4 to 6 | Water-resistant: Yes | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles

Best Budget

Adidas defender 4 small duffel bag.

Convenient carry loop

We recommend Adidas' Defender Duffel Bag for the exerciser on a budget who needs a reliable and well-rounded bag. It has two spacious side pockets and an easy-access top entry, like our best overall pick. The durable, water-resistant base protects contents from a wet field or locker room floor. Plus, Adidas stands behind the Defender’s reinforced stitching and overall quality with a lifetime warranty.

We love that the duffel comes in three roomy sizes and is available in several colors, making it a versatile staple for all types of users. We also appreciate the carry loop on one end of the bag that lets you clip on additional gear. Like Nike’s Brasilia and Under Armour’s Undeniable Bags, this duffel has convenient handles that can be velcroed together for a secure grip. But while we appreciate that the larger sizes have a padded crossbody strap, we wish the smaller sizes were also padded. Key Specs:  Dimensions: 20.5 x 11 x 11.75  to 29 x 14.5 x 14.75 inches | Storage Capacity: 44.5 to 101.6  liters | Materials: Polyester | Compartments: 5  | Water-Resistant: Yes, at the base | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles

Elite Sports’ Convertible Gear Gym Bag is a two-in-one bag that can be worn as a padded backpack or duffle. And we love that the heavy-duty PVC coating is extremely durable and water-resistant, so your belongings stay protected.

We love that the insulated exterior pocket keeps protein shakes and snacks cold, making refueling quickly after working out easier. This well-designed bag even has a separate laptop compartment and top hardshell pocket for fragile valuables, like your phone or sunglasses.

With sternum chest straps that buckle close to the body, this pack’s secure fit prevents your valuables from bouncing as you hustle to the gym.

When we tested this product, we appreciated the many ways to store your stuff: We made good use out of the pockets in the shoulder straps, a hydration sleeve, side pockets for water bottles, and the external drawstring bungees for exterior storage. We also loved the comfortable design, which is super sleek and sporty.

Made from durable but lightweight water-repellent polyester and nylon, this pick will last long enough to make it worth its pretty high price. And we like that the backpack has reflective details for visibility as you run or travel in low-light conditions.

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 13.8 x 3.3 x 16.1 inches | Storage Capacity: 10 liters | Materials: Polyester, nylon | Compartments: 5 | Water-resistant: Yes | Straps: Adjustable shoulder straps, top handle

Béis the hanging duffle.

Hanging organization

Chic, neutral design

This chic and neutral duffle is best for easy gym-to-work transitions and allows you to stash your essentials in style. It has 15 separate compartments that let you pack everything you need for work or a weekend away. Thanks to the bag’s expandable design, you can hang it on a locker, door, shower, and more to easily access your items without the need to unpack—making it excellent for morning workouts where you go straight to work from the gym.

Other useful features include a padded laptop sleeve, an external pocket that converts to a trolley sleeve, dual velcro handles, and an adjustable padded crossbody strap. We also love that the duffel has a water-resistant finish to repel moisture and a reinforced bottom for extra durability.

As for storage, there’s plenty of room. You’ll find two side pockets (one mesh and one zippered) and a front zippered pocket with a key leash. After unzipping the main compartment and hanging the bag on its two sturdy hanging loops, there are four large shelf-like compartments, two large zippered pouches, and several mesh pockets. While it’s pricier than other options on our list and color options are limited, we think this genius bag is worth it.

When testing the best gym backpacks, we also tried Beis' Convertible Sport Duffle , which we found extremely versatile and a great two-in-one duffle-backpack option.

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 18 x 14 x 8 inches | Storage Capacity: 36 liters | Materials: Polyester | Compartments: 15 | Water-resistant: Yes | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles

Best With Shoe Compartment

Kxks. kicks kase sneaker bag & travel duffel bag.

Fits four large pairs of shoes

If you like to take your shoes and sneakers on the go, we recommend Kicks Kase’s Premium Sneaker and Travel Duffel Bag. We love that the four large shoe slots are big enough for four large pairs of men’s size 14 shoes and other essentials. And the bag has a removable insert with adjustable dividers to customize your space—whether you’re packing a change of clothes or maxing out the bag with sneakers.

Shoes aside, this duffle offers additional storage pockets inside and out to easily access personal items, clothes, accessories, and more. It also has a designated laptop sleeve. We like that the bag is structured, water-resistant, and super durable—making it well worth the price. It’s also TSA-compliant, so this bag counts as your carry-on for plane trips.

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 22 x 9.5 x 13 inches | Storage Capacity: 44 liters | Materials: Nylon | Compartments: 11+ | Water-resistant: Yes | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles

The bag unzips and unfolds to reveal three large, structured, and ventilated compartments for clothing and shoes and two tiny zippered pouches for smaller valuables, like your favorite pair of workout headphones .

The outside pockets include a zippered laptop sleeve on one side and a velcro pocket sleeve on the other. Despite its large hauling power, it also qualifies as a carry-on—making it great for on-the-go individuals. Shrine’s Sneaker Duffel is a pricier option and comes in just a few colors, but you can snag it in various NBA team editions or upgrade to their beautiful (and pricier) leather version .

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 22 x 12 x 10 inches | Storage Capacity: 42 liters | Materials: Polyester | Compartments: 5 | Water-resistant: Yes | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles, end grab handle

Best For Swimmers

Tyr backpack.

Budget-friendly

Large capacity

Straps are not supportive enough for heavy gear

We recommend this bag for swimmers because it can hold everything from goggles and swimsuits to kickboards and towels. When we tested TYR’s Big Mesh Mummy Backpack, we were impressed by its storage capabilities and appreciated the mesh lining that helps wet items dry quickly. Unlike many drawstring bags, this pick has a zippered side pocket and water bottle pouch so items won’t get lost in the main compartment.

Lightweight with adjustable straps, the bag comes in 11 bright colors and patterns. A barrel-lock closure keeps everything inside secure but also easily accessible. The one downside to keep in mind is that the straps may not be strong or supportive enough to lug around heavy gear.

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 19 x 25.25 inches | Storage Capacity: 40 Liters | Materials: Polyester  | Compartments: 3  | Water-Resistant: Yes | Straps: Backpack straps and top handle

It comes in trendy neutrals, bright hues, and three additional sizes (a medium, large, and mini version ). When we tested this bag, we were surprised by how much it could fit, despite its smaller size.

We love that it’s waterproof—one of our testers got caught with this bag in a thunderstorm, and when she arrived home, she was happy to report that all valuables were completely dry and protected. Along with a main compartment and a few slip pockets, the Everyday Gym Bag offers a shoe tunnel and wet pocket to keep your sweaty shoes and clothing separate from the rest of your gym bag essentials .

The only downside we found is the lack of interior storage compartments for organization. But we still love this stylish, versatile, budget-friendly option for everyday wear.

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 18 x 7.9 x 8.7 inches | Storage Capacity: 34 liters | Materials: Polyester, PVC | Compartments: 4 | Water-resistant: Yes | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles

Best for Weightlifters

2pood gym bag.

Sleeve for a weightlifting belt

Grab handle on the end

Weightlifters and bodybuilders need a high-capacity bag with enough room for belts, lifting shoes, and other accessories—and 2POOD’s Performance Gym Bag Duffle offers just that and more. With over 50 liters of structured space, you can store clothes or towels in the main compartment and smaller gear, like chalk, gloves, and wrist straps, in the quick-access outside mesh pocket or the large outside zippered side pocket.

But storage capabilities don’t stop there: You can also keep valuables, like headphones, glasses, cards, and keys, safe in the protective, cushioned pocket. And we love the great end grab handle for quick transitions between lifting stations.  Unlike generic duffles, you can slip your weightlifting belt into this bag’s special sleeve for easy exterior transporting, so it doesn’t take up precious cargo space.

It’s one of our list's more expensive options, and we wish it came in more colors. But we think it’s worth the purchase for weightlifters or those needing lots of storage space.

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 20 x13 x12 inches | Storage Capacity: 51 liters | Materials: Nylon blend | Compartments: 6 | Water-resistant: No | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles, end grab handle

Best for Yoga

Bagsmart zoraesque bag.

Concealable yoga mat strap

Hidden water bottle loop

Removable crossbody strap

No shoe compartment or bag

This stylish duffel with a concealed yoga mat strap has enough space to transport blocks, shoes, clothes, and more. Unlike many yoga bags on the market, Bag Smart’s Weekender Bag has plenty of pockets and compartments to organize all types of essentials. We love that it includes a laptop compartment, a hidden water bottle loop, a USB charging port, and anti-theft zippers for added protection.

While this bag doesn’t come with a shoe or garment bag, it does have a sleeve that slips over rolling luggage for use as a carry-on. While the practical, neutral colors go with everything, there are only two color options to choose from. But the removable crossbody strap and two size options add to this bag’s impressive versatility.

If you prefer a backpack style, we also tested Aururae’s Yoga Multi-Purpose Yoga Backpack —another great option for yogis.

Key Specs: Dimensions: 18.5 x 8.7 x 11 to 21.3 x 8.7 x 12.6 inches  | Storage Capacity : 29 liters | Materials: Cotton, nylon | Compartments: 8 | Water-Resistant: Yes | Straps: Adjustable crossbody strap, handles, yoga mat strap

Best With Wheels

Calpak rolling duffel.

Keeps weight off shoulders

Doubles as luggage

Doesn’t have a shoulder strap

Consider this versatile rolling duffle if you’re looking to lighten your load altogether. Instead of weighing down your shoulders, Calpaks’s Stevyn Rolling Duffle helps you easily shuffle your gear (and many other items) without causing any shoulder pain or strain. It’s a great option for travel too and can be used as a convenient carry-on.

We love the large, structured bottom compartment that lets you store shoes or other large accessories and the spacious top compartment with interior organization for smaller items. While this bag is rather expensive and only available on Calpak’s site, we still find it a great investment due to its brand-backed quality and versatility outside of working out.

Key Specs:  Dimensions: 22 x 13 x 10.5 inches | Storage Capacity: 45 liters | Materials: Polyester | Compartments: Not listed | Water-resistant: Not listed | Straps: Handle straps, rolling handle, bottle handle

How We Selected and Tested the Best Gym Bags

To choose the best gym bags, we first spoke with personal trainers Nicholas Duran , NASM-CPT, and Amanda Barton , CPT, to get their expert advice on the key features to look for in a gym bag. Then, we researched dozens of bags from the top, trusted brands.

We also tested several gym bags to help us narrow down the best options on the market. Our team of fitness testers each used a gym bag in their regular routines over several weeks. Consistently incorporating the product into their fitness routines and daily lifestyles, we thoroughly evaluated each bag.

We only chose to include gym bags on our list that ranked highly in key areas, including quality of construction, materials, size, design, and storage. We also considered comfort, durability, additional features, and overall value. Finally, our writer, a certified personal trainer and frequent gym-goer, used her personal and professional experience to evaluate each product on our list.

What to Look for in a Gym Bag

Quality construction.

When it comes to hauling your gear, you need a bag that’s durable and made to last over dozens of gym, work, and travel trips. According to our experts, high-quality hardware, like zippers, buckles, rivets, or clips, should be hefty enough to hold a bag full of equipment yet easy to adjust.

You should also check a bag's stitching to ensure it’s strong and reinforced, especially on handles or areas you’ll be grabbing and lifting the bag.

Polyester, nylon, canvas, leather, and vinyl are the most commonly used materials for gym bags. Choose materials that match your style, budget, and desired function. “I like the exterior to be chic and stylish, but with wipeable interiors that are water resistant and washable,” Barton says. We recommend a bag with materials that are lightweight but durable, breathable, and easy to clean.

Water-resistant or waterproof lining, sections, and coatings inside and outside of your bag will help protect your belongings. For swimmers, a wet bag or waterproof compartment is especially useful. Water-resistant linings can also help keep sweat or smells from soaking into the bag and are easier to wipe clean. Waterproof coatings on the outside can protect your gear from rain. Gym bags may be completely water-resistant or not at all, so shop accordingly.

The size of your gym bag will depend on what you need to carry. You want to ensure your bag is large enough to hold all your essentials. This will vary based on the kinds of classes or workouts you are doing and whatever you need before or after the gym, says Barton. You'll also want to ensure your bag fits into the lockers or storage areas at your gym and isn’t too large to carry safely without causing future back injuries.

If you need to store large gear or accessories, we recommend Elite Sport’s Convertible Gear Gym Bag . And for smaller items, we like lululemon’s Everyday Backpack .

Storage and Compartments

Many gym bags come with pockets and compartments for organization. “My favorite organization feature is a specific compartment for sweaty clothing so that you can keep everything else separated,” Barton says.

But some bags only come with one or two main compartments. You’ll want to purchase a bag that fits your organizational style. If you wear special shoes for certain types of workouts, it's good to have a shoe compartment.

Style and Design

Gym bags vary in carry style and storage design—backpacks and duffels are the most common. A backpack is a great option for a hands-free commute that also provides balanced weight distribution on both shoulders, which can be safer for your back. And a duffel may give you more storage space and a large capacity for big gear and accessories.

“If you're commuting to or from work, a duffel or backpack with compartments for dirty clothing is great,” says Barton. If not, Barton recommends a small drawstring, crossbody, or tote bag for the essentials. “It doesn't even need to be designated for gym use,” she says, “but the cleanability is important so you don't have a stinky bag.”

You also might consider investing in a bag that includes helpful design features. Gym bags are often designed with specific sports in mind. For example, TYR’s Big Mesh Mummy Bag has swimming-specific features (like waterproof compartments), while Bag Smart’s Weekender Bag has a convenient yoga mat strap for on-the-go yogis. These additions can help a bag fit seamlessly into your lifestyle and workout routine.

Comfortable Straps

A bag designed with a good support system, like a duffel with a padded crossbody strap or a backpack with a sternum strap, will help prevent back injuries. Adjustable straps can increase comfort and support by ensuring a closer fit to your body. If you usually carry a lot of gear or heavy items, padded straps that don't dig into your skin or chafe are essential. Loading and wearing your gym bag properly will also keep you strain-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

You don’t have to break the bank for a high-quality gym bag because plenty of great options fit various budgets. Price often depends on size, quality, durability, and name brands. Adidas’ Defender Duffel Bag , a great budget-friendly option, was $40 when we published this list. And Under Armour’s Undeniable Duffle , our best overall pick, is usually available for just $10 more.

If you’re looking to invest in a gym bag with sport-specific features, maximum durability, and lots of organizational storage, you may be willing to spend a bit more. We recommend lululemon’s Active Backpack for serious runners.

Keeping your items organized and stored between work, errands, workouts, and more, a gym bag can be an essential part of your routine. According to Barton, for someone who is busy and loves to be organized, a great gym bag is essential to ensuring you have everything you need to get you to the next place.

Beyond the gym, your gym bag can be helpful as a multipurpose bag for toting all kinds of stuff during work commutes, weekend trips, long-haul travels, and more.

The size of your gym bag will depend on activity level, preferred workouts, personal lifestyle, and daily routine. It should be able to hold any equipment or accessories you need—like towels, balls, shoes, or post-workout shower essentials.

How you should pack a gym bag will vary from person to person, but there are some basics that every exerciser should have. A water bottle, headphones, and a change of clothes are a good starting place. If you shower at the gym, you may also want to bring your own body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion. Packing a towel and shower shoes may also be a good idea.

If you'll be skipping a shower, dry shampoo can help refresh your hair. Face wash, makeup remover, extra hair ties, and bobby pins are also helpful. You may also want some post-workout fuel , like a protein bar or a nutritious snack.

A life-long athlete and certified personal trainer, Jessica Murtaugh, NASM-CPT, knows her way around the gym and regularly researches the latest and best options in fitness gear. She understands how beneficial an organized and durable gym bag can be. Jessica prefers versatile bags with lots of storage and designated compartments, like Beis’ Hanging Duffle .

For this guide, she researched and prioritized brands that provide item durability, safety, versatility, innovation, and value. Dedicated to reporting authentic content to her readers, she is careful to recommend trustworthy products and brands that promote size, gender, and race inclusivity in their core values.

Travel + Leisure / Brian Kopinski

Going on a trip but want to stick to your fitness goals? No sweat. Portable exercise equipment — everything from resistance bands and foldable yoga mats to weighted vests — allows you to get in a good workout wherever you are.

These travel-friendly items will easily fit inside a carry-on without breaking size or weight restrictions , and yet they strengthen and tone your muscles just as well as (sometimes even better than) full-size equipment you’d find in a regular gym.

To help you determine which products are worth the weight, we researched and tested a list of portable exercise equipment, specifically looking for compact options that will work well for travel. We also incorporated several options that we’ve personally tested, including a travel yoga mat, a yoga towel, resistance bands, and a massage gun. We evaluated the equipment on several attributes, such as portability, performance, absorbency, and comfort. We’ve continued to use these items since testing wrapped to determine if their performance remains strong (read more about our testing process below).

Once you get to your destination, you’ll have no problem finding room to do the space-efficient exercises. Here are our picks for small but mighty items worthy of a purchase, from massage guns to ab equipment for serious muscle growth.

Best Travel Yoga Mat

Aeromat elite yoga pilates mat.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

This cushioned yoga mat offers luxe features at an inexpensive price.

We noticed a slight rubber smell during testing, which might bother sensitive noses.

If you’re a yogi who’s often on the move, keep up your yoga practice with the Aeromat Elite Yoga / Pilates Mat. During our tests, the sticky polyvinyl chloride fabric ensured that no sweaty feet or palms went sliding. And the built-in mesh has anti-stretch capability so the yoga mat moved with us as we flowed into different poses.

This yoga mat exceeded our cushioning needs by defying the notion that travel yoga mats are notoriously thin. It comes in two sizes: 5 millimeters and 6 millimeters, both of which offer ample comfort for sore joints or knees. Traveling yogis have the option of purchasing the mat with a harness or without. We recommend getting the harness since it makes it easy to sling around your shoulder if you don’t want to sacrifice valuable luggage space. The lightweight mat comes in several calming colors, such as sea glass green, dusty rose, and chai.

The Details: 3.6 pounds︱23.9 x 4.8 x 4.4 inches

Travel + Leisure / Cindy Erskin

Best Yoga Towel

Lululemon the towel.

  • Absorbency 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

The strong grip keeps your body rooted to the mat so you’re free to flow from one pose to the next.

The edges could be more tailored to prevent fraying.

Yoga may be a relaxing activity, but that doesn’t mean you won’t work up a sweat. This Lululemon yoga towel with microfiber fabric prevents your mat from becoming a slip-and-slide. If you need more grip, such as during a restorative yoga class, simply spray more water overtop. When we added a decent amount of water to it, we did feel moisture seeping through, but it quickly dissipated into the material. We also didn’t experience any bunching.

The towel overlaps a standard size mat, so you can use it on larger mats or as a towel for your post-workout shower. When it’s time to pack it up, fold it into a tiny square or roll it like a yoga mat. After practice, we cleaned it in the washing machine and were pleased to discover that there were no signs of wear-and-tear or piling. The microfiber fabric remains baby-soft, perfect for laying on during Savasana. Yogis have three stylish colors to choose from: black, hail, or velvet dust.

The Details: 26 x 71 inches

Best Resistance Bands

Chareada resistance bands set.

  • Quality 4.5 /5
  • Versatility 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Grip 4.5 /5

The resistance tube and loop bands are durable enough to prevent breaks or rebound snaps.

The grips provide a no-slip hold, but certain hand positions can cause tenderness.

For a strength training workout that’s lightweight, portable, and doesn’t incur a monthly gym fee, don’t resist the pull of this resistance band set. The 23-pack combo pulls on the heartstrings of any fitness lover since it has high-quality stackable tube resistance bands and loop bands that provide up to 150 pounds and 40 pounds of weight, respectively.

We traveled with the kit for two weekends and loved the portability of being able to throw it in our bag and get a workout from wherever. We did everything from basic arm curls to fly exercises that work the back and pectoral muscles. The kit also comes with dual-sided sliders, door anchor weights, ankle straps, and an adjustable skipping rope for even more versatility. Within a week, we were already seeing noticeable definition in our arms and shoulders. We loved how much tighter our upper body felt from them after testing.

The Details: Silicone | ‎13.7 x 9.7 x 3.8 inches

Best Massage Gun

Therabody theragun mini.

  • Effectiveness 5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Stall Force 5 /5

It offers Bluetooth connectivity so you can access a library of workouts on the Therabody app even when you’re far from home.

The small size makes it difficult to target large areas, such as the back.

Small but powerful: that’s the best way to describe the Theragun Mini 2nd Generation. The ultra-light massage gun more than makes up for the previous version’s issues in size and portability by being 20 percent lighter and 30 percent smaller. Simply throw it into a gym bag or your luggage for on-the-spot muscle recovery via three powerful speeds and three attachments.

We liked how the ergonomic triangle shape and grip fit nicely into our palms during our tests. The portable size is best-suited to handle the needs of smaller muscle groups, such as the calves, hamstrings, arms, and forearms. And while it doesn’t go quite as deep into the muscle as the company’s larger versions, we were able to relax sore muscles once we pressed down hard enough during testing. Stall force never derailed our recovery. The device has 120-minute battery life, so you can probably leave the charging cable at home if you’re going away on a short trip. We appreciated the carrying case, which keeps the good vibes going by protecting your device.

The Details: 1.5 pounds | 7.9 x 5.9 x 2 inches

Best Yoga Block

Manduka cork yoga block.

The lightweight block takes up no more space than a toiletry bag.

Cork is more likely to stain than foam.

A Manduka block makes your on-the-go yoga setup even more effective. It’s made from coarse-grain cork, which is super compact and lightweight compared to wood, foam, and coarse-grain cork. The non-slip material keeps you stable and secure as it props you up and makes it easier to move deeper into poses. Consider it the ying to your yoga mat’s yang.

The Details: 2 pounds | 4 x 6 x 9 inches

Best for Abs

Vinsguir ab roller.

  • Assembly 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Quality/Comfort 4 /5
  • Versatility 3.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

It has a thick base to keep your body balanced.

The handle isn’t as steady as similar options.

When crunches aren’t doing it for you, try this ab roller to strengthen your core. It tones the abdominal muscles by rolling your body into a plank and back. With a wheel that is 3.2 inches thick, this ab roller keeps you balanced and stable, and you can throw it in any carry-on or bag. There’s also a comfy knee pad to keep you rolling comfortably for years to come.

The Details: 1.4 pounds | 6.5 x 12 inches

Best for Weight Training

Bala bangles.

  • Ease of Use 4.9 /5
  • Fit/Comfort 5 /5
  • Versatility 4.5 /5

They add an extra challenge to whatever workout you have going on that day.

One to two pounds of weight resistance may not be challenging enough for some.

For workout equipment that moves with you, you can’t go wrong with these Bala Bangles. Featured on Shark Tank, they’re as stylish as they are durable, made with only the highest-quality recycled steel and wrapped in baby-soft silicone. Don’t be surprised if people confuse them for actual bracelets!

The design is unisex and one-size-fits-all, so there’s something for everyone. Customize the bracelet to your personal style and fitness goals with the large selection of colors and choice of one to two pounds of weight resistance. Then, strap them on, and enjoy the extra challenge.

The Details: 1 to 2 pounds | 13.5 x 3.5 x .75 inches per bangle

Best for Leg Day

Vaunn folding pedal exerciser.

 Amazon

  • Ease of Setup 4.5 /5
  • Performance 3.5 /5
  • Features 4 /5

This pedal exercise is an easy way to get your legs moving.

Some users find the pedal strap to be too big.

Friends never let friends skip leg day, so allow us to introduce you to the Vaunn Medical Folding Pedal Exerciser. It only weighs 5.4 pounds ( much easier to transport than an actual exercise bike), and the design is compact enough to fit under most desks and tables. You can easily combine it with your daily activities, such as work meetings and TV-watching, or use it when you have time to kill at the airport.

The base is sturdy enough to prevent wobbling, so don’t be afraid to amp things up with the resistance knob. Since no tools are required, assembly is quick and easy, and the quick-release folding mechanism makes it simple to store everything between sweat sessions.

The Details: 5.4 pounds | 11.2 x 15.2 x 18.2 inches

You have to pay for access to the TRX Training Club app after the 30-day free trial ends.

It’s lightweight at under two pounds, and it takes up hardly any space in a suitcase.

The Details: 1.7 pounds | In package: 12.2 x 8.7 x 8.5 inches; Out of package: 53 x 1.5 x 6 inches

Best Portable Home Gym

Oyo personal gym.

It requires almost no space to use.

The 25 pounds of resistance may be too little for some people.

This portable home gym is out of this world — literally. It’s made with SpiraFlex resistance technology, which was invented by Paul Francis to help NASA astronauts get fit on the International Space Station. With durable nylon-coated stainless steel cables and polymer construction, this total-body system is built to last. It provides 25 pounds of resistance in each hand for a killer workout, yet the entire system only weighs two pounds. You’ll also receive access to workout videos that were created by OYO fitness director Nick Bolton (although the app isn’t highly rated). To top it all off, you’ll enjoy peace of mind with a three-year warranty.

The Details: 2 pounds | 26 x 7 x 3 inches

Best Weighted Vest

Omorpho g-vest+.

Whether you’re walking, hiking, or doing CrossFit, this vest amps up your workouts.

They only come in two sizes per gender.

When it comes to a weighted vest, you want a product that adds resistance without making your carry-on unwieldy. Another must-have: It has to fit like a compression shirt without the restriction of a compression shirt. This design from Omorpho checks all the boxes.

Available in five colors, the G-Vest+ cinches at your sides and has adjustable shoulder straps so you can find the perfectly snug fit. The weight of the five-pound women’s version and the 10-pound men’s version are equally distributed around your torso so you have full range of motion with an extra bit of challenge. It’s made of a super-soft neoprene and includes a back panel for ventilation. Connect to the Omorpho app to be led through high-intensity, do-anywhere workouts.

The Details: Up to 10 pounds

The Travel + Leisure team took part in testing a total of 69 portable workout items in our New York City testing lab. By incorporating them into our workout routines, we assessed several attributes across the board, such as quality, portability, and durability. Since no item is alike, we chose specific attributes to apply for each. For example, we evaluated Lululemon The Towel’s grip and absorbency during our yoga practice and paid special attention to the stall force rating of the Theragun Mini 2nd Generation.

Since portability is an important factor while traveling, we packed up the most compact fitness items to take them home and on trips. In the end, only products with the highest ratings and portable sizes were selected for the tested portion of this roundup. In addition to our tested items, we also included researched options in this roundup.

Tips for Buying Portable Fitness Gear

Consider workout facilities and opportunities at your destination.

Many hotels provide guests with a gym and/or swimming pool. Check to see if your destination has a fitness room or fitness classes available to avoid trying to fit unnecessary items in limited suitcase space. If you’re planning to do activities like jogging or power walking during your travels, make sure a safe route is available, and map it out ahead of time. Consider the level of activity that may already be a part of your journey. For example, you might not want to lug weights for your legs on a ski vacation.

Have a packing plan

Preparation is key when it comes to a fitness packing plan. Before adding fitness equipment to your cart, think about what bags you plan to take and whether you’ll have room for everyday essentials along with your gear. If using a foam roller after working out is key to your fitness routine, then consider purchasing a more travel-friendly version. After use, be sure to clean the items before packing to avoid dirt and bacteria spreading. Finally, pack fragile fitness equipment securely with packing tape or a box, and whenever you can, choose items that come with a carrying case for easier transport.

Factor in both weight and size

Of course, you’ll want to choose exercise equipment that fits inside your carry-on to avoid checked bag fees, but don’t forget that weight is also a factor. On most airlines, bags are considered overweight if they exceed 50 pounds, and they are subject to fees usually starting around $50. Moreover, even if your equipment doesn’t exceed weight limits, dense items can make suitcases inconvenient and uncomfortable to maneuver.

Exercise doesn’t have to be left off the itinerary just because you’re traveling. Try any one (or all) of these activities to stay active:

  • Use the hotel’s amenities, such as the gym or pool
  • Take advantage of fitness apps for quick in-room workouts
  • Go for a walk and explore ( a smartwatch can track your daily steps)
  • Try walking meetings
  • Do calf raises while waiting in line
  • Book a local fitness class near your hotel or vacation rental
  • Go for a bike ride (many cities offer bike rentals)
  • Stretch after a long day of travel
  • Use your body weight (lunges, sit-ups, squats, and planks are all good options)

Yes, you’re allowed to travel with workout supplements (pre-workout, protein powder, vitamins, etc.) in either your carry-on or packed luggage. These are classified as “Protein or Energy Powders” by U.S. Transportation Security Administration. It’s recommended that protein or energy powders larger than 12 ounces be packed in your checked bag in a clear bag or the original packaging.

If you don’t have access to a washing machine, do a quick rinse with soap or travel laundry detergent. Afterward, allow the clothes to dry outside or around your hotel room.

To prevent your workout clothes from stinking up your luggage, pack some scented dryer sheets and store sweaty workout clothes away from dry items, such as in a bag or protective organizer . There are also plenty of duffel and weekender bags that offer a separate compartment for sneakers or dirty clothes.

What makes a good gym bag? Sure, any durable tote will do. For us, it's durability, compartmental organization, weight, and style. Depending on the type of gym you're going to (and if you're commuting by subway, bike, or car) some of these features might matter more to you than others. But the best gym bags hit somewhere near the sweet spot on all these features, making the organization of your workout clothes , sports equipment, and valuables easy and accessible.

Gym bags have come a long way since the small duffel bags by Nike or Adidas that everyone seemed to carry (though those bags are still around). Now, gym bags can be duffel bags, they can be carry-on bags, they can be tote bags, drawstring bags, large travel bags or small holdalls . Choosing the right one depends on what features you require—do you need to carry a yoga mat? Do you want a water bottle pocket or a separate shoe compartment? Once you answer that question, you can consider how durable and waterproof you need your gym bag to be. And of course, what it looks like.

The following 10 gym bags have been carefully selected by the Field Mag team to ensure that you stay organized and efficient no matter how much gym gear you need to carry and which type of gym your training takes you to.

Our Top 10 Picks for the Best Gym Bags

Best Men’s Work Bags

A man’s work bag needs to be versatile and efficient . Having tested and compared a wide selection of work bag options, we’ve found ourselves happiest with the briefcase style. We love these four bags below:

Best Rugged Work Bag: Filson Large Briefcase

Made in the USA from waxed twill, complete with bridle leather handles and strap, the Filson is tough as nails and made for everyday use.

travelling bag gym

Protect your laptop in this large briefcase made with our nearly indestructible Rugged Twill. Inside are four roomy full-length sections. One is the perfect size for a laptop computer. More pockets hold a battery pack, diskettes, calculator, business cards, pens, pencils and notebooks.

Brass zippers and leather pulls stand up to long-term use, and all eight of this bag’s pockets feature heavy-duty canvas stitching. Better yet, a double bottom ensures that it will keep its shape no matter how much you need to carry.

Great All Around Soft Sided Briefcase: Stuart and Lau Cary Briefcase

The Wirecutter’s vetting process for their reviews is legendary. It definitely means something that Stuart and Lau’s Cary briefcase has been named their top briefcase two years in a row.

travelling bag gym

Our original briefcase, the Cary is crafted from proprietary DuraLite™ fabric, an ultra lightweight, high tenacity twill with a waterproof backing. Smart sleeves put items at hand, while the main compartment secures valuables in tidy order

And honestly, we’d have to agree: Lightweight and nearly waterproof, yet ultra-durable with a good carrying capacity, it’s one of the most versatile bags we’ve ever used. All and all, this is one of the best bags for men out there.

Luxury Leather Briefcase: Daveed Slim Briefcase

Stylish and minimalist, the Daveed is made of buttery soft full-grain leather.

travelling bag gym

"A daytime bag designed for power and performance. Padded 15” laptop sleeve and hidden zippered pockets keep essentials secure and organized. Non-slip strap and wrap-around Riri zipper work together to deliver unparalleled ease and access."

The Riri zippers glide smooth as silk every time, and feel so good to use in both directions. Plus, the two-way zippers allow the Daveed to open extra-wide, making it both sleek in appearance and abundant in storage space.

Check out our post on how to spot a quality leather bag , featuring Daveed’s leather briefcase.

Tough and Oversized Leather Briefcase: Saddleback Leather Co. Flight Bag

As rugged as a work bag comes, the Saddleback Leather Company’s Flight Bag is unique in having no breakable components.

travelling bag gym

This leather laptop bag is over-engineered with no breakable parts like magnets, zippers, snaps, buttons, etc. Just a few pieces of strong leather put together in a good looking way.

Instead, they use choice cuts of extra-strong leather, riveted reinforcements, and 316 stainless steel buckles. It’s a little pricey, but damn near indestructible and ready for any adventure.

The Best Backpacks for Men (work and travel)

Backpacks aren’t just for school anymore. Modern designers have come to appreciate the sleek lines and convenient over-the-shoulder storage of backpacks, and are now making products that any man should be proud to wear.

Three backpacks stand out in our mind as great combinations of style, comfort, and convenience:

Favorite Casual Everyday Backpack: Aer Flight Pack 2

Cleverly designed to transform into a backpack, shoulder bag, or soft briefcase. We love that the Aer Flight Pack 2 is versatile, affordable, and has super clean lines.

travelling bag gym

"The versatile 3-way backpack designed for travel . Its versatile design allows you to comfortably carry it as a backpack, a shoulder bag or a brief with handles. Multiple pockets for your daily essentials keep you organized and ready to work on the go."

The plastic hardware and Cordura nylon make it less suitable for (formal) professional use, but perfectly applicable to day trips, weekends, and short hikes.

Sleek Leather Work Backpack: Daveed Business Backpack

Featuring the same super-smooth full-grain German leather as their briefcase (above), Daveed’s business backpack might change your opinion about what outfits you can wear a backpack with.

travelling bag gym

"Sophisticated enough to wear to work. Large enough to hold a change of clothes and shoes. Secure enough to hold your laptop in a padded compartment. At 4.5 inches wide and with foam-cushioned adjustable leather straps, this bag has your back."

It’s every bit as stylish as a leather briefcase, but offers a much more lightweight and streamlined way to pack your essentials.

Great Tech Commute-to-Work Option: Stuart and Lau Capstone Backpack

This bag is designed specifically for men who are always on-the-go. The Capstone from Stuart and Lau is shaped to allow easy access without ever leaving your shoulders.

travelling bag gym

" Designed to never leave the shoulders, smart sleeves and pockets keep items at hand, while the main compartment is easily accessed on the go by the top flap or side zipper. Waterproof pocket for umbrella or thermos, airport-friendly top loading laptop sleeve, and foam injected straps for carrying comfort."

Efficient, fluid movements allow you to grab your laptop, wallet, keys, and more without ever letting the Capstone touch the ground.

Best Men’s Gym and Travel Bags

Despite their seemingly different purposes, men’s gym and travel bags share a lot in common. You’ll likely be storing a change of clothes or two, a pair of shoes , and any accessories (phone, wallet, and watch ) that you usually carry.

Each of the five bags below can do double duty as either a gym or travel bag:

Three Awesome Minimal Travel Bags

Minimal style and efficient functions are everything in a travel bag. In fact, it’s essential when looking at the best bags for men.

Each of these three bags has been a hit on our trips — so much so that we can’t quite decide which one we like best!

Nomad Lane Bento Bag

Named for the compartmentalized lunch boxes favored across most of Japan, Nomad Lane’s Bento Bag features similar customization options.

travelling bag gym

"The Bento Bag is the ultimate travel companion. With thoughtful features built for travelers, it can be used as a weekender, personal item bag or an everyday bag."

It’s a super cool hybrid bag, opening down the middle like a suitcase but carrying like a shoulder bag. If you fly a lot, the easy access charging port is a complete lifesaver (and TSA-approved).

I’ve done a few videos for the Nomad Lane Bento Bag. You can check them out here and here .

J.Crew Ludlow Garment Duffel

A whole lot of bag for a bargain of a price! J. Crew’s Ludlow offers huge amounts of storage space and sport coat-carrying functionality (without wrinkling or the need to carry a separate garment bag).

travelling bag gym

"Trade out that flimsy bag that was only meant to get your suit from the store to your closet for some real armor. Made of rugged canvas, this garment bag can take all the jostling that travel brings."

A waxed cotton canvas exterior makes it a durable option for travel or gym use, and you can carry it over the shoulder or by its riveting-reinforced handles.

Hook and Albert Garment Duffel

Made of heavy-duty top-grain leather and large enough to fit a size 46 suit, this garment duffel is a real beast of a bag.

travelling bag gym

"This premium, top-grain leather Garment Weekender bag is a timeless duffle, with garment bag functionality. The Garment Weekender was designed for the overnight trip, weekend getaway, or business trip."

Shoe holders and external pockets add extra storage space without making the bag look bulky from the outside. And you can’t forget its garment bag-like capabilities (avoiding the need for a separate bag for your suits or sport coats).

Overall, it’s the perfect bag for weekend getaways or short business trips.

The Best Gym Bag: Stuart & Lau Regimen Gym Bag

Waterproof fabric and a full-grain leather trim make the Regimen stand out from the crowd of the usual gym bag suspects.

travelling bag gym

"Fully loaded with features yet sleek and stealthy in an all black composition of waterproof fabric, full grain leather trim, and gunmetal hardware—the Regimen is everything you require for gym, work, and travel all in one."

The separated and waterproof outside sections allow you to keep your work and gym items safely apart from each other. Meanwhile, the washable laundry bag section and ventilated shoe compartment really put this bag over the top.

Consider this the perfect work, travel, or gym bag.

The Best Durable, Rugged Duffel: Filson Medium Duffle Bag

Water repellent and simply built, Filson’s duffle bags feature one big interior compartment and two smaller end pockets.

travelling bag gym

This water-repellent mid-sized heavy-duty duffel is designed to carry plenty of cargo and built to take a beating. Features two inside pockets at each end, leather pulls, leather grip with two-snap closure, and adjustable, removable leather shoulder strap with leather should pad. Two way brass zipper

Between the waxed canvas exterior, brass zipper pulls, leather reinforcements, and heavy-duty stitching, this bag is made to take a beating and keep looking as sharp as the day you bought it.

The Bags I’ve Used the Most

Though I’ve enjoyed using each of the bags listed above, there’s a small selection that I turn to most often in my day to day life. With that in mind, here is my condensed list of the best bags for men. Consider this NY-commuter approved!

Filson Large Briefcase

Of all the briefcases I’ve used for work, I keep coming back to the Filson.

Its heavy-duty construction, storage options, and water resistance makes it my “old reliable.” If I’m in a rush to get out the door, I almost always grab this briefcase because I know it’ll handle even the roughest of weather and commutes.

Aer Flight Pack 2

When I’m looking for a bag that I don’t have to think much about, the Flight Pack 2 delivers.

It’s just such a versatile storage option, transforming from backpack to shoulder bag to briefcase without any fuss.

Plus, the price is just a fraction of many of the bags on this list. Consider this one of the easiest bags to invest in for complementing your existing wardrobe.

Every time I use the Bento Bag, I’m surprised at just how much space it really has. Equally stylish as a shoulder bag or handled duffle, it’s my go-to bag for trips to the airport.

Bag I’m Most Excited About: Stuart & Lau Capstone Backpack

Here’s my hot take: Anyone who brings their laptop to and from work should have the Capstone backpack .

It’s such a well-designed bag that after wearing it for a few days, it started to feel like a piece of me.

Every movement to access my stuff was smooth and effortless. Plus, it’s completely waterproof — making it a perfect commuter bag for any day of the week.

Best Luxury Work Option: Daveed Slim Briefcase

This is a slim, elegant, luxury leather briefcase perfect for the guy who prefers to travel light and doesn’t need to carry much stuff with him to work every day.

Final Thoughts: A Bag For Every Occasion

Take it from me: Once you get your bag game in place, you’ll never regret it. There’s something especially satisfying about having the right tools for the situation, every time — and the best bag to carry them in.

The Best Gym Bags for Carrying Fitness Gear With Ease

Best Gym Bags

Our evaluations and opinions are not influenced by our advertising relationships, but we may earn a commission from our partners’ links. This content is created independently from TIME’s editorial staff. Learn more about it.

Any bag can be a gym bag if you put your workout clothes in there, but why settle for just any bag? A dedicated gym bag should feature a few key traits that most totes won’t have. It should be large enough to handle a change of clothes, at least one compartment (which can handle toiletries that may leak, or damp workout wear away from other items), and it needs to be made from a material that can stand up to cleaning. From there, any other features are a plus, like water bottle holders or yoga mat straps. With so many choices on the market, it can be tough to find just the right fit—which is where this list of the best gym bags comes in.

What to consider when buying a gym bag

Your preferred athletic activity.

Depending on your workout, you’ll likely appreciate different features in a gym bag. Some bags come with a strap to hold a towel or yoga mat, appreciated by swimmers and yogis, but less valuable for runners. If you’re into crossfit or weights, you may want to bring specific gear with you, such as a weight belt or chalk; a bag with multiple small compartments will be particularly useful here. Other gym goers may prefer something simple and lightweight, that can fit their workout clothes and a water bottle and not much else. Consider what activities you are most likely to pack your bag for and what features will make life easier.

Preferred carrying style

While the standard gym bag is a duffel, many different styles of bags might be better suited to your taste and needs. Backpacks are a popular choice, especially for people traveling between the gym and the office. These often include space for a laptop or other work equipment and can be more comfortable to carry. Tote bags can be versatile, for people who want one bag that works as well at the gym as on weekend errands. If you travel light to the gym, a drawstring bag may be the most compact and convenient option. The classic duffel is a favorite for being easy to throw in the back of a car or over your shoulder.

Size and capacity

Depending on where you’re traveling from and what activity you’re doing, you may need to bring a little or a lot of gear. Make sure your gym bag fits everything you need for a productive workout, without being so big that your stuff gets jumbled around inside. If you know you’d rather have your massage gun, yoga blocks, and towel with you in the gym, then choose a bag that fits all of those items.

Best gym bag for men: Nike Brasilia 9.5

Nike Brasilia 9.5

Nike Brasilia 9.5

As with the women’s bags, duffel bags for men aren’t notably different from other styles; this is a unisex product. However, I like the Nike Brasilia 9.5 for its spacious interior that fits up to 60 liters, its multiple pockets and its affordable price of just $42. This is a no-nonsense choice that’s ideal for anyone who doesn’t care about frills and just wants a bag that will hold all their gear and keep it organized. The material includes at least 65% recycled polyester and although it’s not fully waterproof, the base of the duffel has been coated with a water-resistant material so you can trust your stuff will stay dry. Although the color range is limited, the four options are classic shades that should appeal to most shoppers. I also like that the shoulder strap and handle are padded, so heavier loads are still comfortable to carry.

  • Materials:100% (partially recycled) polyester
  • Capacity:60 liters
  • Dimensions:25 x 12 x 12 inches

Best Crossfit gym bag: Small Haven X Crossfit Organized Backpack

Small Haven X Crossfit Organized Backpack

Small Haven X Crossfit Organized Backpack

If you’re a serious athlete or consistent gym goer, then you know how much impact a few thoughtful details can have on your workout experience. The Small Haven X Crossfit Organized Backpack features a patented internal organization system, inside a structured main compartment that can stand upright on its own for easy packing. The different compartments are varied in size to better accommodate your gear and get the most out of the 26 liters of volume. Because it’s slightly smaller than some of the other bags on this list, this is a more portable and agile option without sacrificing on storage.

Other storage details include a vented shoe compartment that can fit up to a men’s size 14, as well as a dedicated laptop sleeve for anyone who is traveling to or from work and doesn’t want to use a laptop backpack . Athletes will also appreciate the high-quality materials and added features, like the expandable water bottle pocket. Unfortunately, this quality comes at a high price: $329. This likely won’t be within everyone’s budget, so I’d recommend this backpack for serious athletes who will get consistent use out of it.

  • Materials:1050D ballistic nylon exterior
  • Capacity:26 liters
  • Dimensions: 20 x 12.5 x 6 inches
  • Shoe Compartment:Yes

Ultimate Gym Bag 2.0: The Durable Crowdsource Designed Duffel Bag with 10 Optimal Compartments Including Water Resistant Pouch (Black, Medium (20"))

We often turn to Amazon for low-priced options, but that doesn’t need to mean a dip in quality. The FocusGear Ultimate Gym Bag 2.0 is frequently on sale for under $30 and yet offers many of the storage features of more expensive bags. With this duffel, you’ll get a shoe compartment, phone pocket, two water bottle holders, a wet pocket — and several other storage areas. The main compartment also fully unzips into a wide-mouth opening, so that you can easily pack or unpack your gym gear. While the aesthetic is a little blocky and basic, you can still choose from 8 different colors and choose between the handles or shoulder strap for different carrying styles. FocusGear doesn’t list the material used for the bag and we don’t believe it’s waterproof, but the base has been reinforced with a water-resistant panel to protect your bag from any wet surfaces. This isn’t the most elevated bag, but it’s incredibly practical and organized — even more so when you consider the price.

  • Materials:Not listed
  • Capacity:28 liters
  • Dimensions:15 x 11 x 10.5 inches
  • Price on Publish: $29.99
  • Great low price for the features available
  • Ten storage pockets, including a shoe compartment, phone pocket, 2 water bottle holders and a dedicated wet pocket for sweaty clothes or swimsuits
  • Eight colors to choose from
  • Big mouth opening for easy access, whether packing or unpacking
  • Not the most stylish bag; quite bulky and blocky
  • Not fully waterproof, although there is a water-resistant panel on the base

For a wallet-friendly gym bag that offers several storage pockets, a fun color-range and an accessible wide-mouth opening, you can’t go wrong with the FocusGear Ultimate Gym Bag 2.0.

How to maintain and clean a gym bag

Your gym bag will hopefully get a lot of use and end up carrying dirty, sweaty clothing on a regular basis. Dirty or wet clothes and shoes should be kept in their dedicated sections, to prevent the spread of water or dirt to other, clean items. It’s also important to keep your bag clean and sanitized, so your belongings stay in good condition and you don’t end up shortening the lifespan of your equipment—or your bag. It’s a best practice to remove everything from your bag after each use, so it can be cleaned and stored properly. Wash dirty gear and make sure to wipe down the interior of your bag with a disinfectant, to remove any germs and odors. Some bags may be machine washable, while others may require handwashing. While spot cleaning should work for daily use, consider a monthly deep clean—or more frequent clean if you are a swimmer or heavy sweater—to keep your bag smelling and looking good.

Durability and materials

Water-resistant coatings.

Gym bags have to put up with a lot of action. They’re transported in all weathers and are regularly exposed to water, thanks to locker rooms, swimming pools and general sweat. This makes water-resistance a key feature of any reliable gym bag. While some bags are made with waterproof or water-repellent materials, other bags use a water-resistant coating on the base and/or sides of the bag to help keep your belongings protected from moisture. Make sure to check the labels on your bag, so you don’t accidentally expose unprotected surfaces to water.

Reinforced stitching

Many brands construct their gym bags with reinforced stitching to ensure that all straps and pockets stay in place over time. This form of stitching is also valued for its flexibility, allowing the seams of the bag to flex with use and reduce the pressure on high-stress areas. For pockets that get a lot of use or straps that hold a lot of weight, reinforced stitching can help to maintain performance in a near-invisible way.

How we test and select the best gym bags

To find the best gym bags, I considered the needs of different kinds of gym goers to find the best options across the board. I evaluated each bag on its style, price, materials, organizational features, capacity, size, durability and carrying options, to determine its overall value. Using a combination of first-hand experience, expert insights, and customer reviews, I assessed how each bag performed and held up over time, as well as how the bags would work in different scenarios. It was important to reflect the diverse needs of different athletes, from those who prefer a large duffel with roof for all kinds of equipment, to those who prefer a lightweight, stylish design that can double as a weekend bag. I leaned toward trusted brands with a reputation for quality manufacturing, but also considered less famous customer favorites to determine the best gym bags for every kind of gym goer.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How many liters should my gym bag be.

This will vary depending on what you like to bring with you to the gym and if you intend to use this bag for other purposes. Ensure there’s enough capacity to fit all of your gear, but not excess space that has your belongings jumbling about inside. Most gym bags on this list accommodate volumes of 20-30 liters, but there are a few more capacious options that might be better suited for anyone who wants to bring additional equipment, such as massage guns or Crossfit shoes. If you’re looking to also use this gym bag for weekend errands, you may want a slimmer silhouette that is less bulky to bring around town. The same goes for if you want this bag to double as a carry-on bag or even personal item. In short, aim for the smallest bag that will fit everything you need.

How do you pack a gym bag?

As with any excursion, think about what you will need to take out of your bag first and pack in reverse. Items that you’ll want to use pre-workout should be stored in the most accessible places, with post-workout gear put within less easy reach. For maximum convenience, make sure to utilize different storage pockets so that you can find everything quickly and easily, without having to take out everything in your bag. Ideally, you’ll be able to use each pocket for the right-sized gear so that there is minimal wasted space. Remember to bring a wet bag if you will have damp clothes post-workout, and use shoe compartments for greater efficiency.

Why do people carry gym bags instead of standard bags?

Any bag can be used to transport gym equipment, but many people opt for a gym bag because they’re designed specifically to organize your workout gear. Different bags have different storage pockets for gym shoes, wet gear, water bottles and personal items, so you can make sure everything is kept securely and in its rightful place. Vented shoe compartments and wet pockets can help to reduce the spread of odor or moisture, in a way that standard bags cannot. They also utilize materials that are durable and water-resistant, to accommodate busy locker rooms and swimming pools on a regular basis. Finally, gym bags often feature padded handles or adjustable straps, for more convenient and comfortable portability.

11 Best Shoe Bags for Travel, Work & the Gym

11 Best Shoe Bags for Travel, Work & the Gym

Shoes are messy.

Have you ever thrown a pair in your travel bag or gym bag and thought some separation from your clothes and gear would be a good idea?

Here’s a solution: bags that slide onto your shoes or boots and keep them from dirtying up your other packed items.

  • It’s not one size fits all . And I do mean that literally. Some shoe travel bags are built for sneakers, others for much larger work or hiking boots. Find the bag that fits not only your shoe size, but also your shoe type.
  • Light and waterproof . Typically, shoe travel bags are made with lightweight materials (like polyester or nylon) that are also waterproof—or, at the very least, feature a waterproof coating. Sometimes the waterproofing is on the inside (to keep wet/muddy shoes from leaking), sometimes on the outside (to protect valuable sneakers from the rain), and sometimes on both.
  • Stuff-friendly is ideal . When not in use, shoe travel bags should be small enough to stuff into a pocket of your duffel bag or backpack. Some even come with their own stuff sack that makes it easy to pack them small and tuck them out of the way.

After personally testing more than a dozen bags and combing through dozens more, I’ve winnowed down all my options to the very best shoe travel bags to make your packing and transporting shoes exponentially easier and cleaner.

Note : Many gym backpacks include a built-in shoe compartment in case you are looking for something for that purpose.

The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks

A person standing outside in a light blue short sleeve shirt wears the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L backpack, in black with a gray llama-head logo and aqua accents.

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

When you open up your favorite carry-on travel backpack, it should feel like you’re opening the door to a well-organized closet or sitting down at a clean desk, with everything in the right place and easy to reach.

This is your moment to center yourself, no matter how chaotic the journey.

What we considered

A 45-liter bag maximizes overhead space but can get heavy when fully packed; 35-liter bags tend to be more manageable.

A bag with a clamshell design opens like a book and is the easiest to pack, but a bag that opens traditionally tends to have more structure.

Ideally, a travel backpack has handles on all sides—especially the bottom—so you can pull it out of overhead bins or from under seats.

Some internal pockets are useful, but major organizing is better managed with packing cubes.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack and the larger Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L offer the best combination of features, quality, and durability. Both bags are exemplary carry-on travel backpacks that are designed for comfort, durability, and organization. Though these backpacks are great as companion bags for any trip, they’re designed to ultimately replace all of your other luggage and become your exclusive bag as you travel.

This style of packing is not for everyone, but once some people try it, they’re forever hooked. Finding the right bag is a personal choice, though, and no single bag will appeal to everyone. That’s why we also have picks that are great for people who travel for work , others that are designed to be carried over long distances , and a bag that’s basically luggage on your back .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, best small carry-on bag for most situations: cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack, best large bag for most situations: peak design travel backpack 45l, best mobile office: patagonia black hole mlc 45l, best bag for long journeys on foot: osprey farpoint 40 and fairview 40, best bag if you need a large suitcase on your back: tortuga travel backpack pro 40l, other good carry-on travel backpacks, how we picked and tested, the competition.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade, and I have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack, whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that, and I spent another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

I reached out to writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag: Eytan Levy, the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website; James Feess, founder of The Savvy Backpacker ; and Sharon Gourlay, of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

We researched and tested bags designed for those who want to travel light and stay flexible while flying, without the burden of checking luggage. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey.

  • When you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage, it’s easy to remain more mobile. And it’s easier to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but also about yourself and what you really need day to day.
  • Size and weight still matter. If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags tend not to be carry-on-friendly, however, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them.
  • No single backpack is perfect for everyone. Before you make any purchase, consider some basic points. How much can you carry? And where do you usually visit: the city or outback? Travel gear should feel like a welcome companion—there to support you when you need it but unobtrusive when you don’t.

45-liter bag vs. 35-liter bag

A graphic comparing the difference in capacity between a 45-liter and a 35-liter backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

A versatile small pack for a week or a weekend.

This durable bag’s clamshell design makes it easy to organize your stuff. And due to its strap design, this bag can be worn on your back or carried in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag for getaways lasting just a few days or a whole week.

It’s one bag that can do it all. This is a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

The packed Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack, shown fully open so that the contents are accessible.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
  • We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but after many years of traveling with our bag, we’ve found that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight: 3 pounds 5 ounces Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: adventurous Colors: assorted

A person stands by a wooden fence outdoors while wearing the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L, our larger pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

  • It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
  • More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: back-panel loader Style: minimalist and unobtrusive Color: black, sage

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack, is held in midair by a person wearing a plaid shirt.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

  • We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 3 pounds 10 ounces Main compartment access: clamshell Style: retro Colors: tan, black, olive, green

The Osprey Farpoint/ Fairview 40 Travel Pack, one of our also-great picks for the best carry-on travel backpack, shown in black.

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

travelling bag gym

Osprey Fairview 40

For long distances and smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

View of the straps on the reverse of the Osprey travel backpack.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

  • For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight (Farpoint): 3 pounds 3 ounces Weight (Fairview): 3 pounds 2 ounces Main compartment access: front-panel loader Style: active Colors (Farpoint): green (Gopher), gray (Tunnel Vision), blue (Muted Space), black Colors (Fairview): blue (Winter Night), red (Zircon), blue (Night Jungle), black

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

The Tortuga Backpack Pro shown with the front clamshell lid in the open position.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

  • Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
  • It's heavy. We’ve also fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be—the difference is noticeable—and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. But if you think you would struggle carrying this model, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

Capacity: 40 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: minimal, with a rigid construction Color: black

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

If you want a budget pick (but only when it’s on sale): The eBags Mother Lode Travel Backpack (our former budget pick) is still your best budget option, if you can catch it on sale for at least half off the list price. It’s not comfortable enough for trekking long distances on foot, but there are plenty of external pockets for organization, a laptop sleeve (which holds the weight of your computer high up on your shoulders), and an easy-to-access main compartment. This pack also has the largest capacity of any bags we tested, expanding to 65 liters—well beyond any airline’s regulated 45-liter limit. However, the bag’s casual-to-basic looks might not be to everyone’s taste. In 2024, eBags raised the price of the Mother Lode to $200. We have seen it on sale for $100, and in our opinion it’s worth getting only at the sale price.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

  • Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

A graphic illustrating a clamshell bag opening

  • Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
  • Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
  • Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
  • Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
  • Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
  • Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go—unless you can pick up the eBags Motherlode bag for under $100, which we think is a better deal at that price.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

This Best-Selling 'Everything Bag’ Is Dubbed a Travel Hack—and It’s on Sale Starting at $27

It even has its own compartment for your shoes.

travelling bag gym

Real Simple / Marcus Millan

Spring travels are officially in full swing, and summer vacation is quickly approaching. Wherever you may be heading this sunny season, it’s essential to have luggage that can fully maximize packing space while carrying well throughout your trip. Introducing this best-selling duffel bag that offers a plethora of room and several nifty features to elevate your travel experience—starting at $27.

The Etronik Weekender Bag is currently on sale with an additional coupon. Its versatile design was created with several different sections to securely hold all of your essentials, as well as adjustable shoulder straps and handles to comfortably tote along while traveling, going to the gym, or heading to work.

While most duffel bags only have one area to throw all of your items into, this large weekender provides a place for every item on your packing list. Its spacious main compartment holds the majority of your bulkier items, however, the duffel also comes with an extra cosmetic bag for toiletries, and a separate section on the bottom to hold shoes ( pssst , there are built-in vents to prevent any unwanted smells).

Plus, the bag was designed with a water-resistant nylon material that’s easy to clean and can hold up well in transit. It even has a designated waterproof pocket that can close via a zipper to separate your wet clothes from your dry belongings.

Although the duffel bag can be used for everyday activities, many Amazon shoppers noted how it was the perfect “suitcase” for their weekend trips and week-long vacations. Not only does it offer plenty of room, but its lightweight build also makes it easy to carry around. Bonus: Its compact frame stores perfectly under seats and in overhead compartments. The weekender bag even comes with an adjustable shoulder strap and handy trolley sleeve to wrap around rolling luggage.

What really gives the weekender bag an edge is its technology feature. No more digging through your bag for a charger, or getting stuck with a dead battery during flights because this duffel does the charging for you. It has a USB charging port located on the outside of the bag, so you can freely connect your device with ease.

The Etronik weekend bag has earned more than 6,700 five-star ratings from shoppers who love it. People rave about this duffel’s versatility, saying it has become a “ gym bag/vacation bag/everything bag ” in their daily lives, and share how “ travel is made easier ” when going on trips. Plus, it comes in 34 colors—some of which feature a hidden coupon.

“Whether using it for the gym or for a weekend mini vacation, it is perfect for fitting everything you need,” one shopper wrote .“The quality is great and durable!”

Another shopper who appreciates its durable exterior wrote, “The bag keeps its shape and somehow stays clean—that's where the magic comes in. They explained they accidentally spilled coffee on the bag and yet, “it wiped right off; no residue or staining.”

Traveling soon? Grab the best-selling weekender bag while it’s on sale at Amazon. Hurry, this double-discounted deal won’t last long.
