Why should you book a vacation package to Tuscany?

If you're planning a trip to this beautiful European destination, package vacations make perfect sense. They allow you to bundle together flights, hotels and car hire, letting you explore the countryside of Tuscany and its tucked away sights. And you can save money for another glass of Chianti, or a succulent plate of bistecca Fiorentina.

When should you book a vacation package to Tuscany?

Tuscany attracts visitors throughout the year, but it has a couple of peak seasons (roughly April to June, and September/October). During those periods, prices will be slightly higher, though the weather is at its best. July and August can be extremely hot, but still manageable. Late fall, winter or spring breaks are great for sightseeing, but double check opening times before visiting any museums or galleries.

Where should you stay in Tuscany during your vacation?

The Hotel Malaspina is a great general option in Florence, Tuscany's premier tourist destination. Converted from a 19th century townhouse, it offers comfort and a warm welcome in the shadow of the gorgeous Duomo. Slightly off the beaten track, it's around 2 hours from the Pisa and Florence airports.

For romantic vacations in Tuscany:

Few cities are as romantic as Florence, and few hotels in the city suit couples as well as the Grand Hotel Minerva. A 4-star hideaway, the Minerva has meticulously furnished rooms, a rooftop pool with views of the city and a fitness center. The R003 airport bus gets there in 17-18 minutes.

Pisa's Grand Hotel Duomo is a magnet for couples visiting the city. Around two minutes' walk from the Leaning Tower, it offers soundproofed suites and fine Tuscan cuisine, while the LAM Rossa bus transports travelers from the airport to right outside the hotel in just 15 minutes.

For luxury vacations in Tuscany:

Located in Florence's Novoli suburb, the Hilton Garden Inn is a luxurious retreat a short drive from the Uffizi and the Duomo. Guests can enjoy a fitness center, gorge on Tuscan delights at City Restaurant and generally relax in style - all within 2 miles of Vespucci Airport.

Italy Tours, Vacations, Trips & Travel Packages

tuscany tour packages including airfare

If there is one country that offers a multitude of reasons to travel to Europe, it is Italy. The list is long and varied. On an Italy vacation, one can start with the natural geographical beauty of this destination. There are remarkable mountains such as the Apennines which run through the heart of the country, the Dolomites which offer amazing skiing and several active volcanoes such as Vesuvius, Stromboli and Etna. There is beautiful and dramatic coastal scenery in places such as the Amalfi Coast and the Cinque Terre Coast.

One can add to these, the many coastal resorts such as those found on the Mediterranean and Adriatic coasts. The unique Italian Lakes have their own brand of beauty in the north of Italy.  Want to visit an island on a trip to Italy? Consider Capri, Ischia or even Sardinia on a trip to Italy.

About Italy

The many charming Italian cities that have outstanding architecture and a long history are to be found everywhere. It is hard to find any town or city that does not have an attractive old centre and probably an incredible church or cathedral. Culture abounds musically in the form of opera, ballet and musical concerts, both classical and traditional. Italy’s museums and art galleries are outstanding and world-famous. There are colourful festivals taking place annually all over the country.

The Famous Trevi Fountain Rome

Then there are some of the world’s best-known wines to be enjoyed on Italy vacations which are produced in several Italian provinces. Italian wine is exported all over the world, and names like Barolo, Brunello and Chianti are well-known. On a trip to Italy, the wine goes with good food and there is absolutely no doubt, that Italy excels in this regard with not just its mouthwatering pasta and pizza but also its many regional dishes. Italian cuisine is truly one of the most diverse in the world, and in any region, or even city and village you visit, there are different specialties. And what can beat having a meal at an alfresco restaurant, available most times of the year, as Italy has, for the most part, a temperate climate? Oh, and don’t forget to try the delicious Italian ice cream (or as it is known gelato).

On an Italy vacation, you can indulge in some of the best shopping in the world. Italian merchandise is renowned for its style and quality, especially it's leather goods. In Italy, fine craftsmanship is available everywhere. Consider also items such as perfume and ceramics. And to conclude the list, there are the Italians themselves with their zest for life which is reflected in their friendly and sunny smiles.

One fact about a trip to Italy is that is not difficult to get around the country from one place to the next. There is an excellent rail network and the Autostradas make driving easy. So the big problem is how much time you have available to spend here and what destinations to choose. To a degree, it depends on your interests and inclinations.

The Ancient Colosseum in Rome

What are the top cities to visit in Italy?

Rome - the eternal city.

Most Italy vacations start with Rome , the eternal city. The numerous Roman sites are a must-visit such as the Colosseum and the Forum filled with a vast collection of Roman ruins consisting of temples, triumphal arches and many other remains.

In the centre of Rome, the Vatican is the home of St Peter’s Basilica, the site where Peter, the disciple was martyred. The interior is vast and contains a large number of priceless works of art. The grottos house various tombs of kings, queens and popes including Peter’s Tomb built in his memory. Also in Vatican City is the renowned Sistine Chapel with its wonderful frescoes on the walls and the ceiling including works by Michelangelo. The Vatican Museum is one of the most important Museum complexes in the world, to be enjoyed on an Italy vacation. The Colosseum, although not in its original completion state, has stood the test of time and is something to behold. This was the arena where gladiator games took place and which held space for 50,000 spectators. Close by is the ancient Roman Forum which was used for celebrations, funerals and other events. It was only excavated in the early 1900s. Climb to the top of nearby Palatine Hill for panoramic views of the city.

The Roman Pantheon is the best-preserved building of ancient Rome. It was a temple which was dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome and built between 118 and 125 AD. It is a circular temple made of concrete with a Greek-style facade and a lovely dome rising above its walls. After the Renaissance period, (1300-1700 AD), the Pantheon became a designated tomb for some of the city's artists and elite including the painter Raphael and former kings of Italy. The Piazza Navona is one of the many beautiful and charming squares in Rome containing 3 fountains of which the most remarkable is one by Bernini. Pleasant cafes and restaurants are dotted around the square. The Trevi Fountain is a Baroque architectural masterpiece that shows the god Neptune riding in a shell-shaped chariot led by seahorses. It is a tradition to throw 3 coins into the fountain to either find love or to return to Rome. The Spanish Steps is an elaborate, delightful staircase with 135 steps where both the locals and tourists congregate. There is a beautiful fountain in the Palazzo di Spagna and, at the top, there is the centuries-old Trinita del Monti Church.

You can also stroll along the sophisticated Via Veneto with its sophisticated cafes and restaurants eventually reaching the wonderful leafy green park, the Villa Borghese. You can shop until you drop on the Via del Corso or the Via Condotti. You can dine in the special atmospheric neighbourhood of Trastevere with its plethora of excellent restaurants and you can easily stumble across one of the many beautiful and charming piazzas where you can soak up the ambience and take in the architectural magnificence while sitting at an outdoor café drinking your espresso.

Florence is known as the Cradle of Civilization due to the riches to be found in its art galleries and museums, such as the Uffizi, the Pitti Palace and the Galleria dell’Accademia. The Duomo or cathedral is an outstanding structure which dominates the centre of the city. The Arno River runs through the middle of the city and its most famous bridge is the Ponte Vecchio, home to a number of gold and silver shops.

Florence Cathedral - The Duomo

Legendary Venice is well-known for its canals and gondolas, certainly but there is much more to enjoy here on an Italy vacation package. St. Mark’s Square is the site of St. Mark’s Cathedral with its bell tower. Explore the backstreets of Venice to unlock its many charms and perhaps take a trip to a neighbouring island such as Venice, Lido or Merano and Burano, famous for their glassware.

Milan is a vibrant city and is known for its magnificent cathedral, opera house, La Scala and its shopping arcade, the Galleria. But also, there are pleasant neighbourhoods, excellent shopping areas and outstanding art galleries and museums. It is also, the gateway to some of Italy’s major lakes.

Tuscany is very well-known for its wine productivity certainly but it is also a region to get to know medieval hill towns such as San Gimignano, Volterra and Montepulciano. Take time to explore the impressive medieval cities of Siena with its annual pageant, Il Palio, Lucca, an old walled city and Pisa, with its famous leaning tower. For exotic and dramatic coastal scenery, head to the Cinque Terre while on an Italy vacation.

Siena - Home of Il Palio

Nearby in Umbria are the equally attractive hill towns of Assisi and Perugia. In Emilia-Romagna, Bologna is known as the gastronomic heart of Italy and Ravenna has its world-renowned amazing frescoes. Further north is the wonderful city of Verona, the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with its open-air arena offering world-class opera performances in the summer.

Siena – Tuscany’s Jewel

Siena is perhaps Italy’s loveliest medieval city to visit on an Italy vacation. You can wander through the old narrow streets and feel you have truly stepped back in time. The centre of Siena is the Piazza del Campo, once a Roman forum, somewhat circular in shape, with a ring of medieval-style buildings on its outer rim. Your visit to Siena may coincide with Il Palio, a very special and colourful event which takes place only twice a year. The pageant starts with a horse race around the Piazza del Campo and is a contest between 10 of the 17 Contrades (central districts/neighbourhoods) of Siena.

What are the top places to visit in Italy?

The Italian Lakes are stiff competition for Switzerland’s lakes on Italy vacations. Lake Como is a beautiful and enchanting lake with a number of attractive lakeside towns such as Menaggio, Bellagio and Tremezzo. Lake Garda is Italy’s largest and possibly most beautiful lake and sits at the foot of the mountains to the north. Lake Maggiore has its picturesque villages and attractive town, Stresa. For skiers, the Dolomites are Italy’s answer for world-class skiing with International class ski resorts such as Cortina d’Ampezzo and Madonna di Campiglio.

Pompeii and Vesuvius

Pompeii was the scene of the major volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Excavations were undertaken much later in time and unearthed a typical Roman city which includes a Roman Forum, an Amphitheatre built in 79 AD, one of the oldest in the world and the Temple of Jupiter. Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano in mainland Europe. It is best known for its eruption in 79 AD that destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It has erupted about 36 times since then and the most recent eruption was in 1944 AD.

The Magical Island of Capri

The Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is known for its stunning Amalfi Drive along a stretch of road that runs between Sorrento and the town of Amalfi. The road is carved out of the side of the coastal cliffs and offers spectacular and breathtaking views down to the sea and on the other side, views of the towering cliffs above. There is a series of picturesque towns all of which allow for a charming stopover. Positano is the Amalfi Coast's most photogenic town where houses seem to tumble down to the sea. There are steep streets lined with hotels, restaurants and small boutique shops.

The Island of Capri

Capri is divided into two parts - Capri Town and Anacapri, the latter perched on top of a hill offering fantastic views. Capri still retains an unspoilt charm with its grand villas and abundance of brilliantly-coloured bougainvillaea. The Blue Grotto is its most famous site. This is a sea cave illuminated by a natural vivid blue light. You need to take a boat excursion to view it although it is possible to swim in it.

The Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre on the Mediterranean coast of Tuscany is not dissimilar to the Amalfi Coast. It is a gorgeous 9.5 kilometre/6 mile stretch of coastline along which are 5 small, traffic-free towns. The 5 towns are Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The most popular town is Vernazza which has a castle, remnants of an old city wall, a waterfront square, a harbour and a small beach. The whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Dolomites

This southern part of the Alps is as much Austrian in flavour as Italian. The city of Bolzano is the gateway to the Dolomites. In winter, it is a wonderland for skiers with many excellent ski resorts. In summer, after the snow melts, there is an abundance of natural beauty consisting of green forests, waterfalls, orchards and pastureland. Cable cars and chairlifts provide easy access to high altitudes. For hikers and walkers, there are well-marked trails and maintained hiking paths.

The Italian Lakes

There are four major lakes in the Italian lakes district, Garda, Maggiore, Como and Lugano. Each one has its own individual character. What they do have in common is their geographical location – the northern part of Italy. While on an Italy vacation, they offer a pleasant contrast to the cultural destinations for which Italy is known. Lake Garda is the largest of the Italian lakes and possibly the most beautiful while on a trip to Italy. The northern part of the lake is surrounded by mountains. The lake has numerous small islands and five main ones of which the largest is Isola del Garda. Lake Maggiore is the second-largest and the longest of the Italian lakes stretching into Switzerland. Regular boat services link both the towns and the islands in the lake. The principal resort town on the lake is Stresa which tends to attract an upscale clientele on Italy vacations due to its chic shops, restaurants and hotels. Lake Como is a rival to Lake Garda as the most beautiful of all the lakes on an Italy vacation. There are some delightful resort towns gracing its shores. Bellagio is a charming, small town located on a promontory with a waterfront promenade. Como is a lively and historic town situated at the southern end of the lake and has an impressive cathedral. Menaggio is a popular resort offering some enjoyable walking excursions. Lake Lugano lies between Maggiore and Como and the Italian section is one-third of the whole lake, the remainder being in Switzerland. Although the smallest of the four lakes mentioned here, it has much beauty, character and charm to enjoy on an Italy vacation. There are many picturesque Venetian-style villages which hug the shoreline.

When is the Best Time to Visit Italy?

It depends on the region you wish to visit plus when are the busy and quieter times. If you are considering a beach resort, avoid July and August when the weather is too hot and very busy with local tourists taking vacations. As far as the cities of Rome, Florence and Venice, the best times are April to late June and September and October to avoid the very long lines at historic sites, museums and galleries. Prices are usually cheaper at this time. Generally, summers are hot throughout Italy and can be exceptionally hot in the south including Sicily. Winters can be damp and chilly, although, from Rome south, the temperatures are mild. The best weather in Italy is in spring and fall with pleasant daytime temperatures and comfortable evenings. The rainiest months all over are usually October and November.

“Uffizi Gallery in Florence is a world class museum with an incredible renaissance art collection. Enjoy a guided tour with a Local Specialist to make the experience more memorable, especially when in front of Botticelli’s stunning ‘Birth of Venus’ painting”

Pino, Travel Director

See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Visit the glamorous Isle of Capri

Enjoy the classic Italian summer in Italy’s picture-perfect Gulf of Naples. Famed for its crystal grottos, dramatic coastlines and endless glamour, our trips to Italy are complete with a day of freedom spent under a striped umbrella, watching sailboats pass by.

Cruise your way through Venice

The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.

Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.

Our top 5 things to do in Italy

It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

Vatican Museums

A collection of Christian artwork that spans centuries and stirs the soul is found in Rome’s Vatican Museums. From the intricate ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to the detailed Pope portraits from the 16th century to today, you will be lost for words once inside this blessed museum complex.

Doge's Palace

Home to the leader of Venice from its opening in 1340, Doge’s Palace summarizes the sparkle of this city. An opulent example of Venetian Gothic architecture and home to numerous historical works, this museum is a must when you visit Venice.

Best museums in Italy

The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Italy Vacations

Home to more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other nation, Italy offers attractions for all travel styles. In February, fashionistas strut Milan’s trendsetting streets, come summer tour groups file through Roman ruins and autumn’s crush season brings wine lovers to Tuscany’s rolling vineyards. Train tracks crisscrossing the country make it possible to sample diverse culture and cuisine during one trip. Travelzoo recommends cooking classes, winery tours, sailing the alpine lakes, and saving room for desserts like Tiramisu and gelato.

Additional details

  • Are there Italy tour packages that include airfare ? The short answer to this is: not many. Because of how widely airfare can vary depending on your departure dates and where you leave from, it is unlikely that your airfare will be included (unless you are requesting a custom tour). However, one of the benefits of Stride is that you can compare the trips that do! Our search feature allows you to easily view the Italian Tours & Trips that include airfare .
  • What kinds of accommodation exist in Italy? This largely depends on the style of tour you are taking, and what level of luxury it is. If you are taking an active, budget-friendly tour, you may be staying in low end hotels, or some of the country’s hostels (hostels in Italy -- as in much of Europe -- are a safe and popular way to travel). Higher-end tours may stay in cute, local inns or various hotels.
  • Is food included on Italy group tours? Food is one of the best aspects of traveling to Italy, so it makes sense to wonder if you will have a say in what you eat! The answer to this question depend on the tour, though the majority of tours will have a couple scheduled meals, like maybe having a group breakfast at the hotel on the first day of your trip, and let you decide on others. If food is your main concern, perhaps consider going on a culinary tour of Italy .
  • Where should I exchange money in Italy? We recommend that you exchange money ahead of time if you can at all. However, there will be multiple opportunities to use your credit or debit cards within the country, just make sure you are using a card with low or no international fees! Also, as you should contact you bank before you travel abroad, so they don’t see your international spending as suspicious activity and cancel your account.
  • What is the weather like in Northern Italy? The climate in Northern Italy varies depending on where you travel precisely, and what time of year. In the Alps, the wintertime can be very cold with a lot of snow. Summer in the mountains is mild, reaching a maximum of 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and but getting a little chilly at night. It also can be quite rainy during the summer, so pack a rain jacket! The coast of Northern Italy is quite a bit warmer than the Alps, and has mild winters and its known for its hot, dry summers.
  • What is the weather like in Southern Italy? The climate in Southern Italy is known for its mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. In the summer, temperatures are on average around 80 degrees. In the winter, make sure to pack a rain jacket, but don’t worry about the snow -- in Southern Italy, this only rarely accumulates on the tops of the Apennine Mountains.
  • How do I prevent thieves and pickpockets in Italy? Boasting some of the most famous and popular tourist destinations in the world, it makes sense that Italy is also known for its pickpockets. While these do not present any real safety issues, it can be extremely frustrating and upsetting to lose your passport, money, or any jewelry that you have. The best defense you have against pickpockets is to be aware, especially when you are in a major tourist area, whether that be an attraction or the airport. Try to carry only a day’s worth of money on you at a time, and keep it in fanny pack (or money belt), or in the inside pocket of a jacket. If you do carry a bag, do not leave it on the back of your chair or put it on the ground when eating at a restaurant. Do not discount anyone of being a thief -- pickpockets can be children, well dressed individuals, or even a woman holding a crying baby. Be especially on alert if you are approached by a group of people, or someone carrying a sign at chest level.
  • Is public transportation safe? Yes, using the bus and train systems in Italy is safe for tourists to use. Just exercise caution as you would in any other context -- be careful when traveling alone at night, for example.

Where is the Amalfi Coast?

amalfi-coast-tour-map

The Amalfi Coast is located South of Rome in the region of Campania . It is located on the Sorrentine Peninsula. It faces south toward the Mediterranean sea. The Amalfi Coast is one of the most popular destinations in Southern Italy. The easiest way to visit the area is to book an all inclusive Amalfi Coast tour package .

Salerno and Sorrento book end the coast. The towns traveling from Salerno to Sorrento are the following: Salerno, Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Erchie, Tramonte, Maiori, Minori, Ravello, Scala, Atrani, Praiano, Atrani, Amalfi, Positano, Nerano, Sorrento.

Our favorite towns are also some of the popular towns, such as Amalfi, Positano, and Ravello. On the other side of the Sorrentine Peninsula, facing the Bay of Naples is Sorrento. This is a good location to base your sightseeing. Many escorted tours stay in Sorrento. A few stay along the coast.

Click for interactive map of the Amalfi Coast .

How to Travel Around the Amalfi Coast

The adventure to the enchanting Amalfi Coast often begins in the charming resort town of Sorrento. Here the allure of Mt Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples set the stage for the journey. Traditionally, Sorrento serves as the gateway for guided tours venturing along the winding roads of the Amalfi Coast. However, the prospect of navigating the perilous cliffside roads was a daunting one. Our firsthand experience affirmed that driving along the Amalfi Coast is far from enjoyable, especially during the summer months when traffic reaches chaotic levels. Even in the quieter seasons, the stress of the journey remains palpable.

A revelation came to us in the form of an alternative – the ferry. Cruising around the Sorrentine Peninsula to reach the Amalfi Coast presented an entirely different and thoroughly enjoyable perspective. The gentle rhythm of the boat and the salty sea breeze created an idyllic atmosphere, and gazing back at the coastline from the water became our preferred way to embrace the stunning beauty of the Amalfi Coast.

For those seeking a hassle-free exploration, opting for a guided tour is a wise choice. By relinquishing concerns about rental cars or public buses, you are liberated to fully immerse in the wonders of the coast. With transportation logistics seamlessly managed, your time is spent sightseeing, ensuring an unforgettable Amalfi Coast experience. Dive into the details on the finest Amalfi Coast vacation packages , and let the adventure unfold.

What to do off the Amalfi Coast

The Bay of Naples and Sorrentine Peninsula are veritable pages of history. Etched by the ancient Greeks and subsequently the mighty Romans who once inhabited this captivating region. The remnants of these illustrious civilizations are omnipresent, bearing witness to the rich tapestry of the past.

For an immersive journey through time, a visit to the Naples Archaeology Museum is indispensable. It stands as a beacon of historical significance, showcasing artifacts that underscore the pivotal role of this area in Western Civilization.

Nearby, the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, nestled in the shadows of Mt. Vesuvius near the Amalfi Coast, offer a mesmerizing glimpse into the lives of ancient Romans. Meanwhile, traces of the Hellenic civilization and the legacy of ancient Greek colonizers linger on in Naples, as well as in Paestum, and on the enchanting islands of Capri and Ischia. Explore these historical gems and unlock the secrets of bygone eras that echo through the Bay of Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula.

Amalfi Coast Vacation Information

The Amalfi Coast includes all ingredients for a great vacation destination including cultural sightseeing, great food, natural beauty, and lots of tourist activities, making it worth going.

A minimum of two days should be planned to visit the Amalfi Coast. On day one travelers can visit the Amalfi Coast sightseeing highlights including Amalfi, Pompeii, Positano, Ravello, and Sorrento. The second day may be used to visit other destinations such as Capri, Mt. Vesuvius, and Naples. It is our experience that not all of these places can be visited in two days so the two day itinerary requires editing based on your interests.

We book all major airlines. Amalfi Coast tours including airfare are typically booked with major carriers such as American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Airlines, Lufthansa, and United.

Naples Airport is the closest airport to the Amalfi Coast. United Airlines has a few non stop flights between Naples and Newark. American Airlines sometimes has flights between Naples and Philadelphia. Otherwise it is common to have to transfer at an airport inside Europe before flying to the United States from Naples.

The closest train station to the towns along the Amalfi Coast is located in Salerno. The next closest is Naples.

Amalfi Coast Tours: When is the best time to visit?

Personally, I like visting the Amalfi Coast during any season. Each season offers a unique experience. The best month for you to visit the Amalfi Coast will depend on your preference for the weather, the activities you want to enjoy, your tolerance for the crowds, and even your budget. Spring (April to June): Spring weather is mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 60°F to 75°F. This weather makes it a nice time to hike around the hills and explore the towns without the sumer heat. The hilly landscape blooms with flowers. The summer crowds have not arrived yet. The landscape is lush with blooming flowers, and you’ll find fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months. The hotel prices are slightly lower than summer. Summer (Late June to August: Summer is the peak toursit season. Weather is 75°F to 90°F. The towns have various festivals during summer. And the beaches are active. During August tourists compete with the local Italians who are also on vacation. Summer is the most expensive time to visit. Fall (September to October): Fall temperatures range from 65°F to 80°F. The summer crowds start to diminish, and you can still enjoy the beautiful scenery, albeit with a slightly quieter atmosphere. It’s a great time for hiking and exploring, and the sea is still warm for swimming. Winter (November to March): Winter is the off-season. Temperature is between 45°F to 60°F. Many hotels and restaurants close for winter. If you’re looking for a quieter experience and are not primarily interested in beach activities, winter can be a good time to explore the region. Winter is the least expensive time to visit.
