Nestled within the Venetian Lagoon is Venice, an Italian city famed for its numerous scenic canals and beautiful historical architecture. It’s one of the most romantic cities in the world and a popular destination for cruisers.

In this article, I will delve into everything you need to know about Venice Cruise Port including tips and recommendations for shore excursions.

Where is Venice Cruise Port Located?

The official Cruise Port of Venice, also known as Terminal Venezia Passeggeri, is located to the west of the historic city, 4 km south of the causeway that links historical Venice to the mainland.

The cruise terminal consists of two parts: the Stazione Marittima cruise terminal which houses the largest cruise ships and the San Basilio cruise terminal.

However, as of 2021, the Italian government has placed a ban on large cruise ships which weigh over 25,000 tonnes, docking inside the Venetian Lagoon. Only smaller ships below this weight can dock in the official Venice Cruise Port.

Large cruise ships are being rerouted and instructed to dock in the industrial port of Marghera which is on the mainland, just below the causeway to Venice.

However, some large cruise ships are now stopping in Ravenna Cruise Port (a 2- hour drive south of Venice) and cruisers are journeying by bus to Venice.

Despite cruise ships docking in Marghera industrial port, cruise passengers will still be shuttled to and from the main Venice Cruise Port for both logistical health and safety reasons, as Marghera does not have the infrastructure to act as an official cruise port.

As the majority of cruise ships will be docking in Marghera industrial port, this will be the focus of our article rather than Ravenna Cruise Port.

Venice Italy Cruise Port

Getting around venice from the cruise port.

Although your cruise ship will dock at Marghera industrial port, shuttle services will likely be provided by your cruise liner from the passenger terminals to the official Venice Cruise Port.

This could be via bus or private water taxi.

If shuttle services are not available, Marghera Port is conveniently located beside a train station. It’s a quick 7-minute train journey from this station to Santa Lucia station, nestled in the heart of Venice. Trains are frequent, several journeying each hour, and cost €2,90 per person each way.

Another way to reach Venice from the cruise port is via bus. The bus stop in Marghera is right beside the train station. The journey takes 8 minutes and will drop you at Venice Piazzale Roma . You can book a day pass online in advance of your visit.

There are also water buses available that travel between Venice and the cruise port. This service is offered by ACTV. If you wish to travel by water bus, then I’d recommend booking your day pass online in advance.

Private water taxis are also available. They’re significantly more expensive than the waterbuses (around €90) but you will have the boat all to yourself.

Alternatively, it’s an 8-minute taxi ride to journey from Marghera Cruise Port to the center of Venice.

Are There Free Shuttles From Venice Cruise Port?

Your cruise liner should offer you a free shuttle service to and from the cruise ship in Marghera to Venice Cruise Port which is on the edge of Venice.

I’d recommend checking with your cruise ship in advance to clarify if they offer this service.

If your cruise ship doesn’t offer this service, trains, buses, and water buses are all available between Marghera and Venice.

Can You Walk into Venice from Your Cruise Ship?

It’s very easy to walk into Venice from Venice Cruise Port (which is where your cruise liner should drop you) as it is perched on the edge of the city. It will take just a few minutes for you to be engulfed by the beautiful city.

If your cruise liner doesn’t offer a shuttle service to Venice Cruise Port, Marghera Port (where your cruise ship will be based) is too far away from Venice for you to easily walk into the city.

It’s located on the other side of a lengthy causeway which, although does have a pavement, isn’t convenient.

It would take over an hour to walk from the cruise terminal into Venice, and that doesn’t include all the further walking you will then complete around the city.

I’d recommend taking public transport or a taxi instead.

Are there Taxis Available from Venice Cruise Port?

Yes, you can grab a taxi from Venice Cruise Port which you can take to Venice Marco Polo Airport.

A taxi isn’t necessary to journey between Venice Cruise Port and Venice City as the cruise port is so close to the city and the city doesn’t have any roads for motor vehicles beyond Piazzale Roma.

By far one of the most popular and unique ways to view Venice is by gondola . These charming small boats without a motor are able to navigate down quiet canals, allowing you the opportunity to soak up the fantastic architecture from the comfort of your traditional boat.

Being one of the more popular activities in Venice, there are a host of gondola tours available, from private to small group tours. Your excursion can be booked in advance online or you can just turn up on the day.

2. Basilica San Marco (St. Mark’s Basilica)

Nestled in the heart of St. Mark’s Square is a magnificent cathedral called St. Mark’s Basilica. It’s one of the most famous and iconic landmarks in the city, as well as a prime example of Byzantine architecture.

The cathedral is incredible to marvel at from afar. It’s also worth paying a visit inside. In order to beat the queues, I’d recommend booking a tour which includes skip-the-line tickets, such as this one .

3. Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square)

No visit to Venice would be complete without soaking up the vast historical monuments which call St Mark’s Square home. As well as housing the majestic St. Mark’s Basilica, this vast square is also the refuge of St Mark’s Campanile, a 16th-century cathedral tower.

The corner of Doge’s Palace is also visible from this beautiful square.

Within the square, you can find a number of cafes and restaurants, the perfect place to enjoy a coffee or some lunch whilst enjoying fantastic views of the square.

4. Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace)

Doge’s Palace is a magnificent palace located in St. Mark’s Square. It served as the residence of the Doge, the chief magistrate and ruler of the Venetian Republic, as well as the seat of the government for close to 1000 years.

Today this historically significant landmark is a museum. You can visit Doge’s Palace along with the neighboring St Mark’s Basilica as part of a skip-the-line walking tour.

Teatro La Fenice is an internationally renowned opera house that’s nestled in the heart of Venice. It’s in fact considered one of the most prestigious and historic theaters in the world. The original opera house sadly burnt down in 1996 and has since been rebuilt.

Teatro la Fenice is an active opera theater. You can book tickets to view operas that are performed there. If you would like to view a performance, I’d recommend booking in advance as tickets can quickly sell out.

Even if you don’t plan on viewing an opera, Teatro La Fenice is still worth viewing from the exterior.

8. Grand Canal

The largest canal in Venice, the 4-kilometer (1.5 mile) Grand Canal cuts through the city of Venice and houses some of the city’s most beautiful buildings.

With barely any walkways beside the canal, the best way to view it and absorb the colorful atmosphere is to take to the water.

This wide waterway is a little too big for gondola rides to take you the whole way but there are plenty of other boat tours available, which journey down this long and majestic canal, passing under the canal’s 4 bridges, including the famous Rialto Bridge.

Getting From Venice Airport to the Cruise Port

There are a number of ways to journey from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Venice Cruise Port.

The quickest and easiest way to journey to the Venice cruise terminal is via water taxi . Being located right on the water, taxi boats are conveniently available just outside the airport. Although this is the quickest way to reach the cruise terminal, it’s also the most expensive way.

You can alternatively take a land taxi between Venice Marco Polo Airport and Venice Cruise Port. The journey is typically between 15 and 20 minutes in length.

Finally, you can journey by bus to Piazzale Roma which is just a short walk away from the cruise terminal.

Places to Stay Near Venice Cruise Port

There are a number of fabulous hotels that are located in Venice’s city center, just a stone’s throw away from the cruise terminal.

Cinqueteste Luxury Home is one of the best-reviewed hotels in the area. It’s a 25-minute walk from St. Mark’s Square and a 20-minute walk from Venice Cruise Port. The hotel is perched right on the canal so if you choose a canal-facing room you will have exceptional views.

Another fantastic option is Hotel Cipriani , a luxurious hotel on an island to the south of the main city which looks across the waterway to Doge’s Palace.

Hotel Moresco is one of the closer hotels to the cruise port, only a 20-minute walk from it. It’s a charming boutique hotel and rooms are dressed in a combination of 19th-century and modern design.

How to Get to the Venice Cruise Terminal/Port of Venice

Now that you know where the Venice cruise terminal is, let’s talk about the best way to get there. Your options will vary depending on where you’re coming from, so I’ll try to outline the most common places you might be arriving from on your way to a Venice cruise. Arriving at the Venice Cruise Port from Venice Marco Polo Airport Note: These instructions will get you from the Venice Marco Polo Airport on the mainland to the islands of Venice, but may not get you all the way to the cruise terminal. For instructions on reaching the cruise terminal from the train station or the bus stop, scroll down to those sections below.

• Taking a bus from Marco Polo Airport to the Piazzale Roma is the fastest and cheapest transportation method. The coach-like ATVO Venice Express bus reaches Piazzale Roma from the airport in less than a half-hour, and a one-way ticket is only €3. There’s also a local city bus that takes roughly the same amount of time, and costs €2.50 one-way. The Venice Express buses are more comfortable and allow for stowing bags underneath, so for the extra 50¢ I’d say they’re worth it.
• From the Marco Polo Airport you can take a water bus – called a vaporetto – directly from the airport to the cruise terminal, which might be advisable if you have loads of time before your cruise and you want a more romantic entry to Venice than in a regular bus. It takes much longer – 1.5 hours at times – and since you’re going to be getting on a boat fairly soon anyway, don’t feel bad if you skip the vaporetto and head for the bus with wheels instead. A vaporetto ticket from the airport to the Venice cruise port will cost €13 one-way (less if you book online with VeniceLink ), and you can either take the red line ( linea rossa ) all the way around the islands of Venice to the Tronchetto stop (which is right next to the cruise docks), or take the orange line ( linea arancio ) to the Giuglie stop behind the train station and then walk across a couple bridges to the Piazzale Roma.
• The luxury option for getting to the cruise terminal from the airport is to hire a private water taxi. The trip will still take you an hour or more, and the fare can be in the €100+ range, but if you have a party of 4-6 people to split the cost it’s definitely more reasonable. The VeniceLink site mentioned above will let you book “tickets” for spaces on shared water taxis, which can help cut down on the price.

Arriving at the Venice Cruise Port from the Piazzale Roma Parking Lot/Bus Stop On the map above showing the cruise terminal area, you’ll see that the Piazzale Roma – where the buses stop and where people park their cars – is not far from the Marittima cruise terminal. If your ship is docked in the Marittima terminal and you don’t mind walking, it takes 10-15 minutes to walk. Otherwise, most of the cruise lines run regularly scheduled free shuttles back and forth from Piazzale Roma to the cruise terminal on certain days of the week. By either the free shuttle or a privately hired taxi the trip is very short, usually only 5 minutes or less. If your cruise is setting off from San Basilio terminal, on the other hand, a walk – while totally possible – is significantly further. San Basilio is reachable via private water taxi from the Piazzale Roma parking lot, or if you’re more adventurous and have more time, you can take a vaporetto around the islands to the Zattere stop and walk to the cruise terminal from there. Arriving at the Venice Cruise Port from the Santa Lucia Train Station The cheapest option for getting to the Venice cruise terminal from the main Venice train station is to walk across the brand new and ultra-modern Grand Canal bridge – the “Constitution Bridge” – that leads to the Piazzale Roma parking lot, and then follow the instructions above. It’s a short walk, and the bridge’s steps are graduated so slightly that you could probably even more or less roll a suitcase over it (although it’d be easier to pick a bag up and carry it). Another option is to take a private water taxi from right in front of the train station directly to the cruise terminal. If money isn’t a concern, this is an easier transport method to stomach – but if you’re traveling in a group (or meet a group of fellow cruise-goers on the train) and can share the water taxi fare among 4-6 people, it’s a pretty reasonable price to pay for the convenience and comfort. You can also catch one of the vaporetti that dock right in front of the train station, just make sure you’re getting on one that will drop you off at Piazzale Roma. From there, you’ll follow the instructions above. Arriving at the Venice Cruise Port from the Mestre Train Station If you’re coming to your Venice cruise from elsewhere in Italy, you might be confused into thinking that the Venezia Mestre station is the train station you want for your cruise. It’s not. The Mestre station is on the mainland – the last stop on the mainland before trains snake across the long bridge to the islands of Venice – and since the cruise terminal is on the islands, Mestre isn’t where you want to be. Here’s hoping you’re reading this in time to book the right train tickets – in which case you want to book tickets through to Venezia Santa Lucia station (the station on the islands), and then follow the instructions above for getting to the cruise terminal from the Santa Lucia train station. If you’ve already got your tickets booked and you don’t feel like booking a separate ticket from Mestre to Santa Lucia, there are buses that connect Mestre’s station to the Piazzale Roma parking lot/bus stop on the islands. It’s about a 15-minute trip and only costs a few euro. The directions for getting to the cruise terminal from Piazzale Roma are listed above.

The port of Venice is one of the main ports of embarkation or disembarkation for cruises in Italy, the Adriatic Sea or Greece. Venice is made up of 118 islands, many of which are connected by bridges. Travel through the many canals by gondola (tourists) by boat or water taxi.

The main tourist attractions are around St. Mark’s Square. The islands of Murano and Burano are also popular with tourists. Weather permitting, it’s always worth venturing off the beaten track and exploring the alleys and bridges of less touristy neighborhoods.

Where is located the Port of Venice Cruise Terminal

The port of Venice which is located at the western end of the city can no longer accommodate ships of more than 100,000 tons following a new law on the protection of the environment and cultural property.

The port of Porto Marghera is now used by some cruise lines. Passengers are transported by ferry to Venice.

How to get from venice airport to the port.

Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is 13km from the port. A bus service (#5 line) will take you to Piazzale Roma. Tickets are on sale at the airport. You can then take the “People Mover” monorail to reach your boarding dock.

The other option is to take a boat bus . A ticket valid for 24 hours or 72 hours will also allow you to travel to tourist attractions if you stay in Venice before your cruise.

For comfort, but much more expensive, you can take a water taxi. You have to look at it as an excursion, because the price is much higher. On the other hand if you are several people it could be more economical. Taxi boats can transport you closer to your hotel.

If you’re in good physical shape, you can walk from the harbour to St. Mark’s Square (about 30 minutes walk, plus if you’re exploring along the way). On the other hand, you must have a good sense of direction and a map not to get lost at the turn of an alley.

Boat bus (Vaporetto) are the most economical and convenient way to get around. Especially if early in the morning you want to move quickly to St. Mark’s Square to avoid the queues.

Neighborhoods

St mark’s square.

St. Mark’s Square is the part of the city that attracts most tourists. When the tide rises, the square is flooded and elevated sidewalks allow you to move around. If you arrive with a suitcase, you may need to make a detour.

Grand Canal

The main river artery, this canal buzzes with activity.

Murano is known for its craftsmen who work glass there. You have to take a river shuttle to get there.

Burano is the mecca of lace artisans. The houses that line the canals are very colorful. The island is located to the north of the lagoon and is accessible by river shuttle.

St Mark’s Basilica

The basilica can be visited free of charge, but you have to pay an entrance fee to visit the museum upstairs. Be sure to arrive early to avoid queues. You must be dressed properly to enter this church (and in all churches in Italy (covered shoulders).

Doge’s Palace

This Venetian palace was the residence of the Doge and the seat of government and justice during the time of the Venetian Republic. Gothic and Renaissance architecture characterizes this monument.

St Mark’s Square is considered to be one of the finest squares in the world, and is where life in Venice is centered, and revolves around.

It is a basic symbol of this cities public life here in Venice. At one end you will find the Basilica with its rounded domes and at the other the highest bell tower in Venice. You will also note the other public buildings surrounding it including the Procuratie Nuove and Procuratie Vecchie. In the square, you will find one of the oldest cafés in Venice, Caffè Florian that was restructured back in the 1800s. The two monolithic columns guarding the square were erected back in the 12th century and was the place where public executions were held.

When entering the Basilica if you look above the farthest door to the left, you will find a 13th century mosaic depicting a very interesting piece of history. It is believed that back in 828 some Venetian merchants removed the remains of Saint Mark the Evangelist from his grave in Alexandria, Egypt and brought to Venice where they have remained in the basilica today. What’s unique about this story is that the merchants hid the remains in a barrel under many layers of pork in order to sneak them past the Muslim guards of the time.

Campanile di San Marco (Bell Tower)

The highest bell tower in all Venice - 98.6 meters (323 ft) tall - which stands in front of the Basilica, is called the landlord, or “il padrone di casa” by local residents. From this bell tower, one has awesome views of the lagoon and city below. On top of the bell tower sits a gold plated figure of the Angel Gabriel, with wings that turn in the wind. The tower has been rebuilt many times over the years since it was originally built in the 9th century. Although the present form of the "Campanile" dates back to 1514, it collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt ten years later (1912) exactly has it had been.

Torre dell’ Orologio (Clock Tower)

This Renaissance clock tower was built in 1496 and is located in the magnificent Piazza San Marco. One of the favorite meeting places in Venice, after all these years, this clock still keeps accurate time. Viewing this clock tower, realize that the clock is an example of excellent mechanical, geometric and mathematical precision. There are a circle of figures that represent the Magi and Gabriel that run around the Madonna and child at the striking of the hour.

Museo Civico Correr (Correr Museum)

Located in the Piazza San Marco, this is the civic museum of all Venice, holding artifacts, documents, artwork, as well as maps charting the cities history. Also on display are doges’ robes, hats as well as a pair of platform shoes from La Serenissma during its best days. A fine collection of art from Antonio Canova is located in the Napoleonic Wing. Also on display are collections by Enzo Cucchi, Anselm Kieffer and Lawrence Carroll. If your interest is early Renaissance Venetian artwork, a visit to the second floor is mandatory.

Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace)

Between the Basilica and St. Marks Basin lies the Palazzo Ducale, a pink and white Gothic style marble building. The Palazzo Ducale for over one hundred years was the main residence of the dukes of Venice who were the reigning body, for life. This building started as a castle in the 14th and 15 centuries, and presents ornate decorations of symbols, sculptures and ornamental decorations. Upon entering the Gothic “Della Carta” door, you find yourself in a beautiful courtyard, with two bronze well rings. These rings date back to the early 1500’s, and sit among the statues of Neptune and Mars created by Jacopo Sansovino in 1554.

Ponte de Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs)

The Bridge of Sighs spans the Rio di Palazzo or Palace River and was constructed in the 17th century by Antonio Contino. The purpose of the bridge was to connect the Old Prison with the interrogation rooms in the Doge’s Palace to the then New Prison located across the river. Romantic legend has it that if a couple were to kiss while enjoying a gondola under the bridge at sunset, their love would last to eternity.

Ponte de Rialto (Rialto Bridge)

Built in the year 1854 the Rialto Bridge remains the most ancient and famous of bridges in all Venice. Until well into the 19th century, this was the only bridge that spanned the Grand Canal, originally built as a pontoon bridge. Today you find this graceful bridge lined with both boutiques as well as tourists. The bridge itself when proposed, had many famous architects applying for the job, including Palladio and Michelangelo himself, but it was a fairly unknown Antonio da Ponte that was awarded the job. This is quite the place to view the boat traffic of the Grand Canal.

Galleria dell’Accademia (Best Art Collection in Venice)

Within the walls of this great museum lie the treasures of Venice’s artist’s paintings, making it one of the greatest in all Europe today. These galleries were actually founded in 1807 by Napoleon himself, occupying a set of religious buildings, namely the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria ella Carità and the Monastery of the Lateran Canons. It was at the orders of Napoleon that after emptying hundreds of convents, churches and other religious buildings of their artwork, they be transferred to this site. He also mandated that the old Accademia di Bella Arti (the Art School) be relocated here, to act as keeper of the artwork, as well as operate an art school.

Scuola Grande di San Rocco (Tintoretto's Best)

Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a school built on church land belonging to St Pantalon and Basilica of Santa Maria. The building, a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture, was dedicated to the protection of plague victims. In 1845 it was the resting place for the relics of Saint Rocco because there was need for such a large collection. Today this museum holds the greatest collection of images created by artist Jacopo Robusti - better know as Tintoretto - who lived between 1518-1594. Here lie more than fifty canvases of his, which was one of his life's master work, taking over 20 years to create.

If you are flying into Marco Polo airport, make sure you are seated on the right hand side of the plane. You will get to see stunning Venice and the cruise terminal from above.

Marco Polo Airport Terminal is far too small for the amount of passengers it is handling and especially when flying back home it can become claustrophobic, not knowing which line starts where. Just be patient and it all will work out. Do not arrive too early, two hours before plane departure is more than plenty. You will not be able to drop your bags any earlier anyhow.

If you have time to spare, take the Alilaguna blu line boat, for 15 Euro, you will enjoy a 90 minute tour around Venice and it will dock right in the middle of all the cruise ships.

Left luggage is 6 euro per 24 hours.

By bus from Treviso Airport to Venice:

An efficient coach service for Venice is scheduled to coincide with flights landing and departing at Treviso. The service is run by a local company called ATVO , there are coaches specifically to serve arriving flights, so if your plane is late there will still be a bus waiting. At Treviso you can buy tickets in the airport's arrivals hall, validate them in the machine provided, and then simply step outside to find coaches waiting on the tarmac. In Venice you can buy tickets at the ATVO office in Piazzale Roma, underneath the car park building. You can't buy them on the bus.

The car park at the terminal is open on days when cruise ships are in port; make you online reservation here .

Arriving at the main train station St. Lucia Railway station the terminals can be reached by: - Public water buses (vaporetti) to P.le Roma (1 stop) where you will find the terminal's bus shuttle or you can take a taxi cab or the new people mover. - Water taxi directly to the cruise terminal.

From Mestre Railway station (10 km far away from Venice) the Port of Venice can be reached by: - Taxi cab (about a 20 minute ride) - Public bus arriving in Piazzale Roma, nearby the Port of Venice.

Please note: some cruise companies make you believe that taxis are difficult to get. In general a taxi for 2 persons or more is cheaper than a cruise organized transfer.

In terminal 103 you can arrange to get your luggage shipped to the airport for €12.50 a piece, great if your ship arrives early and your flight leaves late and want to explore Venice in the mean time.

Since 2020, ships over 25,000 tonnes or over 2000 pax, will be stopped from steaming past Venice's St Mark's Square under a new deal between the Italian government and Venice officials and you will be docked mainland's industrial Marghera port or Fusina both at the mainland, a 15 minute drive.

Most cruise lines have moved to Ravenna (over three hours from Venice) or to Trieste (about two hours from Venice)

You still will check in at the "old" cruise terminal Marittima and will be bused to the new terminals.

What to do: Of all the squares in Venice , Piazza San Marco is the most spectacular, the only one named Piazza, while all the others are named "Campo".

You can visit the Clock Tower: this extraordinary tour of the Renaissance Tower enables visitors to get a close view of the clock mechanism; it ends on terraces which afford a magnificent view of St. Mark's Square and the whole city. The tours, with an expert guide, have to be booked in advance. 

The Venetians love mucking about in boats, and row around in the canals and lagoon, especially on weekends. In summer, get a ferry to the Lido's beaches or sunbathe on the Fondamenta delle Zattere promenade. Floating between the sea and the lagoon is the beautiful island of the Lido of Venice: few minutes away from Venice, kilometers of golden sands offer something for everyone.

The Rialto Bridge ( Italian : Ponte di Rialto) is one of the three bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice . It is the oldest bridge across the canal and probably the most famous in the city.

Don't leave without a visit to the famous islands, known throughout the world for picturesque scenery, handicraft and history. Murano is well known for its glass making, Burano is famous not only for its lace but it is also a pretty fishing village - its streets lined with bright colored houses. Torcello is a delightful little island, the earliest center of civilizations in the estuary

The most popular way to do sightseeing in Venice is as follows:

Exit the cruise terminal, head for the People Mover and buy a ticket (1.50 Euro), take this driverless train to Piazzale Roma, only a few minutes, than head for the ACTV terminals and buy a day or longer ticket for all canal buses (Vaparetti). It is like a giant Hop On/Off cruising experience covering all of Venice, Murano, Burano, Lido all the way to Punta Sabbioni.

Note: When you get off your cruise ship you will be tempted to buy local transportation tickets at the booths outside the terminal. These only sell tickets for the Alilaguna boats, which are great to get you to the airport and Piazza San Marco, but are of limited use if you want to discover Venice as a whole. Return ticket to Piazza San Marco is €15. Check return times before you set out.

A gondola should cost € 70,00 for 50 minutes (up to six passengers), with an additional € 35,00 surcharge for every additional 25 minutes. The price goes up to € 80,00 between 8pm and 8am (prices at time of writing). The tariffs for gondola rides are established by the government, but the gondolier are notorious for extorting large sums of money from unsuspecting tourists. You are advised to agree on a price before boarding.

Hop on/off Boat . From one of the most beautiful squares in the world, Piazza San Marco, to the Bridge of Sighs from the pristine beaches of Lido to the island of Murano.

Be aware that Venice is not the most friendly for passengers with walking difficulty and there are no shuttles in the port area.

It's not too hard to travel onwards from Venice , but if you are planning day trips in the Veneto you do need to consider the extra time it may take you if you have to begin your journey by crossing Venice on foot or by boat. Trains run from Venice 's Santa Lucia Station all over Italy , although for some services you may need to change at the mainland station Venezia Mestre. Padua and Verona are among the interesting towns which can be visited by train from Venice . Buses depart from Piazzale Roma and cover the region.

What to see in the Veneto:

Verona , with its Roman ruins and rather spurious Shakespeare connection is a lovely town to wander around. So too is the rather humbler Treviso , a quiet and prosperous town near Venice with picturesque canals of its own.

Padua is an attractive and interesting town with a rich history, impressive architecture and art - particularly Giotto's frescoes - which is a must for the art historian.

Venice and its lagoon offer unmissable sightseeing experiences, and once you're tired of crowded bridges and canals there are plenty of interesting excursions around the lagoon to quieter destinations such as the fishing port of Chioggia and the abandoned island of Torcello .

The wealthy city-dwellers of the Veneto became obsessed with erecting elegant villas in the countryside, and employed the finest architects to design these rural palaces. Andrea Palladio was the most famous, and the Palladian villas of the region are, after the canals of Venice , one of the Veneto 's most renowned images. The town of Vicenza is the place to visit to see more of his work, while a trip down the Brenta Canal passes his famous villa La Malcontenta, and scores of other summer homes of the Venetian aristocracy.

Culture-lovers will want to attend the famous outdoors opera season in Verona 's Roman arena, and will be spoiled for choice with the region's collection of art galleries and fine architecture. Wine-lovers will find several good local wines, including the sparkling Prosecco which can be sampled in vineyards along the so called 'Ring of Prosecco'.

Shopping and Food

Venice has always been a busy retail center, with an emphasis on luxury goods and a flair for the eccentric. The main retail areas are the Mercerie and the streets known collectively as the Frezzeria, which wind between campo San Fantin and piazza San Marco itself. The densest concentration of big-name fashion houses is in calle Larga XXII Marzo, just west of the piazza, where Gucci, Prada, Valentino, Fendi and Ferragamo huddle together. Calle della Mandola is the street for books and glass beads. For antiques, nose around campo Santo Stefano and San Marco. Look out for unique boutiques with imported or hand-crafted items between the Rialto and San Polo.

There are duty free stores in the cruise terminals, but often are not operating or are not very competitive priced. Hand luggage will be checked by state officials, before you enter the ship, but not on the ship itself.

Venice is very expensive. A soda or cappuccino on a nice outdoor terrace on San Marco Square including classy live music from a quintet and perfect service will cost you around €14 each!

Opening Hours and Holidays:

The typical majority of the clothing and gift stores are closed Monday morning, while in general the food stores close Wednesday afternoons.

The most current schedules of opening are 9 a.m. in the morning to 7:30 p.m. in the evening with a closing for the lunch break and nap- 1:00 p.m. to sometimes until 4 p.m.

Nearly all of the stores are closed Sunday, except for certain shops which sell souvenirs.

Major Cruise Ports And Terminals in Venice

Venice is a northeastern Italian city and the capital of the Veneto region. It is a famous tourist destination that needs no introduction. Venice is an amalgamation of 118 small islands connected by canals and land bridges. A principal maritime power and a commercial centre of the medieval era, the city, is recounted in history as the place of the Crusades, the battle of Lepanto and the hotbed of the Italian Renaissance. 

It is also known as one of the world’s most beautiful and romantic cities. Venice has wooden foundations, and the city suffers from floods annually. The cruise ships and influx of tourists have also increased pollution levels in nearby water bodies and canals, despite government interventions. 

Nonetheless, Venice is on everyone’s bucket list and what’s better than reaching the enchanting city on a cruise ship. Mentioned below are the major cruise ports in Venice.

1. Port of Venice

The strategic geographical location and numerous advantages of the Port of Venice make it a popular choice for international maritime trade. It is also a renowned Mediterranean homeport for cruise ships and one of the most extensive cruise facilities for passenger handling. 

It has many terminals catering to passenger vessels such as ferries, cruises, fast ships, yachts, catamarans, and mega yachts. It is an amalgamation of modernity and Italian heritage at its best. Approximately 2.5 million passengers pass through the passenger terminal of Venice every year. 

Cruise ships from Venice connect the Adriatic seaports of Croatia, Albania and Montenegro, including the Aegean seaports of Turkey and Greece. Venice port has ten cargo terminals and six cruise facilities. 

The Venice cruise terminal is the third busiest facility in Venice and the 13th biggest in the world, handling a thousand cruise ships each year. The passenger terminal lies in the Venetian lagoon and connects the Adriatic sea via the Porto di Lido waterway. 

More than 15 prominent cruise companies like Norwegian Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean operate from the port. 

Passenger terminal 

 Port of Venice is a popular cruise destination, but it is fast becoming a significant hub for yachts. Several new and modern facilities were constructed to moor the vessels in scenic areas near Riva Delle Zattere, Riva Degli Schiavoni and San Basilio, all part of the Venice passenger terminal, managed by the company Venezia Terminal Passeggeri.

The cruise facility has three quays, the largest being the Marittima. The world’s biggest ocean liners are docked at the passenger terminals. The cruise facility consists of the TM Wharf, the Piave wharf, the Tagliamento Quay with its four berths and the two berths of the Isonzo wharf. 

Venice port authority has implemented the concept of the green port. Hence, the passenger terminal is dedicated to upholding the sustainable port guidelines and preserving the marine environment. 

Istria is linked to the city of Venice by high-speed crafts and Hydrofoils. Ships sail from Venice to Slovenia and Croatia as well. Many catamarans offer services to the Kvarner Gulf. More than 1.5 million people use this service annually to reach the coastal settlements of Labin, Lussino, Portorose, Umag, Rovinj, Piran, and Pula. 

Numerous ferry lines connect the port of Venice with the eastern Mediterranean coastline. Apart from people, cars, trailers and lorries, even vehicles are transported in ferries to Mediterranean countries through the Venice RORO terminal. Regular ferry services to the Greek cities of Igoumenitsa and Patras are operated from Venice port all year round.  

2. Marritima

The biggest basin in the Port of Venice passenger terminal, Marittima, has several piers and terminal buildings within walking distance from Piazzale Roma, the taxi booth, the bus stand and the historical centre. 

Earlier, all types and sizes of cruise vessels were welcomed at the port. However, now it accommodates ships up to 25,000 gross tonnes. Larger ships use berths in the industrial port of Marghera or other harbours on the coast. 

Marritima is a few minutes from Piazzale Roma via taxi or bus. A shuttle bus plies on the weekends and Mondays during the peak season. One can also opt for the new Venice People Mover from Piazzale Roma, which goes right to the entrance gate of Marritima. 

3. San Basilio terminal

The San Basilio terminal has three berths located in the Giudecca canal. Passengers can reach the maritime station from Tronchetto via the Santa Lucia railway line and from P.le Roma. From April to November, services are provided to the popular resorts on the shores of Slovenia and Croatia.

The single-storey building was constructed in the 1990s and renovated after that. It accommodates small cruise vessels, hydrofoils and catamarans. Covering more than 1620 m2 of area, the terminal lies on the ground floor and can be accessed by people with special needs. It has a 60-seater waiting room, 8 Check-in counters, a departure hall, two baggage control lines and four restrooms. 

Terminal 103

A modern building inaugurated in 2004, terminal 103, is close to the car park. It is located on the first floor and covers 3700 square meters. It has escalators, a wheelchair ramp and a huge waiting area accommodating 280 passengers. 

Terminal 123  

Spanning 5000 m2, the terminal became operational in 1999 and was used for managing ferry traffic until 2013. However, after ferries were transferred to New Motorways of the Fusina terminal, it was refurbished and transformed into a cruise port with three berths. Terminal 123 lies in the Marittima region and has many attractions, such as the famous interior garden housing Mediterranean flora, accessible to the public. 

Isonzo Terminal

The Isonzo terminal has two buildings inaugurated in 2010 and 2011. This facility intends to offer passengers a memorable experience and contains a 1450 m2 terrace area with a panoramic view of the beautiful city. It has a parking area for third-party vehicles and a separate parking lot for passengers’ cars. Numerous hotels are located in the vicinity of this terminal. 

Terminal 107/108

Restored in 2005, terminal 107/108 can be accessed via a mobile boarding bridge and a Ship boarding bridge. The automatic conveyor belt transfers the luggage to the quay directly. 

4. Venice Yacht Pier

Venice yacht pier offers 950 metres of dockage and accommodates up to 21 superyachts. The viable location of the berths close to Saint Mark’s Square or the Punta Delle Dogana provides a perfect view of the city, its culture and architecture. The finest resorts, hotels, restaurants and cafes are in the vicinity.

Apart from operating the leased berths, the Yacht pier is trying to identify new regions for moorings, given the city’s infrastructure and wooden foundations. Venice does not have extensive marinas but small or medium-sized terminals with draft restrictions. 

For instance, all yachts weighing above 500 tonnes must utilise the services of an agent for their paperwork before entering the pier. 

Numerous services are provided at the marina, including laundry, chandlery and professional handling. The berths are illuminated for easy mooring and equipped with fresh water, wifi and electricity supply. Refuelling and Bunkering facilities are also available. The pier has many bars and restaurants, recycling bins and a water recollection unit.

Venice Yacht pier operates the following berths-

1. Santa Marta

The berth of Santa Marta covers 120 metres and has a 5.8 m draught. It can be reached by taxi or shuttle bus and is close to the Fondamenta delle Zattere, considered the second starting point of Venice. 

2. Banchina Adriatica

With 115 metres of quay and a 7.7 m draught, Banchina Adriatica is situated close to the Guidecca Canal, one of the most beautiful areas of Venice. Adriatica is near the main city centre, known for its medieval Churches, Museums and Art galleries. It is a preferred mooring location for crew and passengers alike, given its proximity to Campo Santa Margherita and the numerous bars and clubs located within walking distance.

3. Punta Della Salute

A picturesque waterfront, Punta Della Salute has around 410 metres of mooring posts and a 6 m draught. It is opposite Piazza San Marco and San Girogo islands. One can enjoy the scenery and solitude here. 

4. Riva San Biago

One of the most impressive and premier docks, Riva San Biago, has 97 metres of quay and 7.8 m draught. It is a kilometre from Piazza San Marco and the Art and Architecture Biennale, held in the gardens. One can start exploring Venice from San Biago, which offers a beautiful view of the San Marco basin beyond comparison.

5. Riva dei Sette Martiri

This berth offers 145 metres of quayage and a 9.5 m draught. It is close to Giardini and Biennale d’Arte, offering another starting point to explore Venice. The area is famous for its supermarkets and the craft market. Tourists can taste wine and buy chocolates, souvenirs, and olives. 

Back in the day, the ships docked at Riva Dei Sette Martiri. The small dock was convenient for the tourists but not for the local inhabitants and people who lived in the vicinity of the pleasure port. 

This is precisely why Riva Dei Sette Martiri was transformed into a yachting facility. It has not seen a cruise vessel for many years. Though the berth offers proximity to Piazza San Marco and is comfortable for passengers, it was just not the same for the residents.

However, if the Marritima passenger terminal is congested, then a cruise ship may dock at Riva dei Setti Martiri. Such a situation is rare and most likely during summers. Generally, no embarkations or debarkations are allowed at this port.

Venezia Terminal Passeggeri S.p.A. (V.T.P.) was founded in 1997 by the Venice Port Authority and operates one of the largest homeports of the world. It’s one of the most important gateways for cruises to the Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean, with over 19 million cruisers transited through its facilities since it opened.

The terminal stretches over a total area of 290,000 m2 and is conveniently located centrally between main road, rail and air connections, within a short walking, sailing and driving distance to the center of Venice. Thanks to steady investments in port infrastructure (nearly 70m Euro spent between 1997 and 2015), cruise ships calling at the Port of Venice can count on ten modern multifunctional terminals, six dedicated quays across Marittima, Santa Marta and St. Basilio., wide spaces for motor coaches and taxis, and facilities for provisions storage. For homeport or in-transit guests, plenty of services and amenities are available to ensure a pleasant stay within the port premises, including easy access to the historical city center with its shops, duty free, area to drop off luggage, water taxis, refreshment areas, and over 2,000 parking spaces.

River cruise ships, with vessels sailing in the lagoon and along the Po River, and catamarans/hydrofoils with seasonal connections to/from the Istrian Peninsula also enjoy the facilities managed by V.T.P.

MSC Cruises Introduces Summer 2024 ‘Stay & Cruise’ Program

MSC Cruises announced its new summer 2024 “Stay & Cruise” program, offering guests the chance to extend their seven-night sailing into a nine or 10-night voyage, according to a statement. 

  The add-on packages are available for sailings on 11 MSC ships at five destinations; Athens, Venice, Rome, Miami and New York.

Travelers can add two nights’ accommodation with breakfast before or after their seven-night voyage at a 4-star hotel in Athens, Venice and Rome or a 3-star hotel in Miami, plus the option for two or three nights at a 4-star hotel in New York.

All “Stay & Cruise” packages offer a half-day excursion to explore the city’s attractions.

  Ground transfers from airports to hotels are included for guests staying before the cruise and from the hotel to the ship.  Additionally, for guests staying after the cruise, transfers from the ship to the hotel and from the hotel to the airport are also included.

  The offer applies to the MSC Divina, MSC Fantasia, MSC Musica, MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview from Civitavecchia for an extended stay in Rome before or after a cruise.

  The add-on package to explore Venice is available pre- or post-cruise onboard the MSC Armonia, MSC Lirica and MSC Sinfonia from Marghera-Venice. Additionally, guests sailing on the MSC Opera, departing from the port of Piraeus, can extend their vacation in Athens.

  The program is available for Caribbean itineraries on the MSC Seascape departing from Miami with an additional two-day stay in the city.

  Guests sailing onboard the MSC Meraviglia can also extend their trip pre-cruise in New York before the ship sets sail.

An add-on package for Istanbul will also be available soon for MSC Cruises’ winter 2024-25 ‘Stay & Cruise’ program.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

MORE DETAILS: Gucci will on Thursday reveal that the brand’s cruise 2025 show will be presented at the Tate Modern in London on May 13. In February, Gucci revealed that London was the selected city for the show, without providing details about the location.

This will be creative director Sabato De Sarno’s first cruise collection, after taking the helm of the luxury brand  in January last year.

Gucci’s connection to London runs deep, as the brand’s history  is linked to founder Guccio Gucci, who in 1897 was a luggage porter and lift boy at London hotel The Savoy. Observing the guests’ luggage, he was inspired to start creating his own line of luxury suitcases and bags, founding his namesake house in Florence in 1921 and setting up the first Gucci store in the Italian city’s Via della Vigna Nuova. 

In alignment with Gucci’s longstanding commitment to champion culturally significant locations and their communities, the house will support the “Electric Dreams” exhibition at Tate Modern, which opens this fall, in addition to a three-year partnership fostering the museum’s work with young creatives. “Embracing a shared commitment to inclusivity and empowerment, Gucci and Tate aim to encourage positive exchanges within communities, and inspire creativity across diverse audiences,” the company stated.

Last year, Gucci staged its  cruise  2024 show at the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul on May 16, marking the brand’s 25 years in the country. That collection was designed by an in-house team, following the exit of the previous creative director Alessandro Michele in November 2022.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Michele had selected unique locations for Gucci’s then-called cruise collections: Arles, France, at the Alyscamps Roman necropolis, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981, for the cruise 2019 show. Before that, the shows were held in other culturally significant locations, including New York’s Dia Art Foundation,  Westminster Abbey’s cloisters in London,   Palazzo Pitti’s Palatina Gallery in Florence  and the Capitoline Museums in Rome. Gucci committed to preserve these storied sites.

Among other cruise shows,  Chanel  plans to present its 2025 line in the port city of Marseille on May 2. Louis Vuitton has scheduled its cruise show in Barcelona on May 23, and  Dior  has revealed its show in Scotland will take place on June 3. Max Mara is planning to present its resort 2025 collection with a fashion show in Venice on June 11.
