Book Your Dream Vietnam Tour Package from the USA – A Detailed 2023 Guide

viet travel tours 2023 from usa

Vietnam has become an incredibly popular tourist destination, known for its natural beauty, fascinating history and culture. An increasing number of US travelers are now booking Vietnam tour packages to easily and affordably experience the top highlights of this mesmerizing Southeast Asian country. This comprehensive guide will cover everything you need to know about choosing, planning and enjoying a Vietnam tour package from the USA.

Introduction to Vietnam Tour Packages from the USA

Vietnam offers an enticing blend of picturesque landscapes, delectable cuisine, ancient temples, vibrant cities, and friendly locals. From cruising the emerald waters of Halong Bay to exploring imperial palaces in Hue and wandering charming colonial streets in Hoi An, Vietnam delivers incredible opportunities for cultural immersion and natural splendor.

Booking a fully-planned tour package takes the hassle out of organizing flights, transfers, hotels, sightseeing and activities. Tour companies leverage relationships with local vendors to access the top guides, best accommodations, and insider access. With transportation, meals, entrance fees, guides and luggage handling arranged, travelers can relax and focus simply on soaking in each destination.

Compared to independent travel, inclusive group tours provide added convenience, safety in numbers, budget certainty and expert trip operation. At the same time, travelers have flexibility to customize aspects like tour length, pace, focus areas, budget, activities, and side trips. Vietnam tour packages make getting the most out of a Vietnam trip easy and enjoyable.

How to Choose a Vietnam Tour Package from the USA

With an abundance of tour operators offering Vietnam itineraries, selecting the right package matters. Keep the following factors in mind:

Match Tour Style and Pace to Your Travel Preferences

  • Pace : Some tours cram in as many stops and activities as possible, while others build in more down time. Know your own pace.
  • Inclusions : Determine must-have inclusions like all entrance fees or all meals vs more budget basic options.
  • Style : Pick a small group intimate tour vs a big bus trip based on your comfort level.
  • Activities : Choose culturally focused, adventurous, foodie or relaxation-oriented packages to align with interests.
  • Luxury : High-end tours offer luxury hotels, fine dining, and premium adventures.

Narrow Options Based on Tour Length, Coverage and Budget

  • Tour Length : Vietnam is vast. Multi-week tours cover the whole country while shorter tours focus on regions like just the North or South.
  • Coverage Regions : Decide if you want to see the full sweep of Vietnam or just target the North, Centre or South.
  • Budget : Vietnam has packages at all price points. Match affordability needs to amenities. Extra budget yields more elite experiences.
  • Luxury Options : For five star lodging, fine dining, spa treatments, upgraded transport and VIP access, luxury tours deliver premium value.

Research Reputable Tour Companies

  • US companies have English-speaking guides and market to Americans. They subcontract in-country services.
  • Vietnam companies have local expertise, competitive pricing, and guides with insider viewpoints.
  • Reviews give insights on guide quality, real tour experience, value and responsiveness.
  • Safety qualifications like membership in established travel trade associations inspire confidence.

Top Destinations and Attractions to Include

Marvel at hanoi and northern vietnam.

No Vietnam tour is complete without visiting the capital Hanoi and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay with over 3000 limestone karst formations rising from the sea. Other Northern highlights include:

  • Ninh Binh – Inland karst scenery, mountain landscapes, and Buddhist temples.
  • Sapa – Trekking around French hillside retreat town and colorful ethnic minority villages.
  • Mai Chau Valley – Idylic rural scenery, stilted longhouses, and ethnic minority culture immersion.
  • Hoa Lu – Ancient capital with remains of imperial palaces and pagodas.

Soak in the Serenity of Central Vietnam

The central region features ancient imperial towns as well as pristine beaches. Top sites include:

  • Hue – Temples, palaces, and tombs dating to 1800s Nguyen Dynasty rule.
  • Hoi An – Picturesque Ancient Town, a former trading port with buildings from 15th-19th century.
  • Da Nang – Sandy beaches, spectacular marble mountains, pagodas and French colonial landmarks.

Experience Cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta

In energetic Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, highlights range from French colonial landmarks to war history to markets. Nearby, tour the Mekong Delta by boat to explore lush landscapes and floating villages. Don’t miss:

  • Cu Chi Tunnels – Hideouts for Viet Cong soldiers during the Vietnam War.
  • Cao Dai Holy See Temple – Eclectic temple of the Cao Dai religion with intriguing blend of world faith symbols.
  • Mekong Delta boat rides – Cruising through emerald waterways and visiting cottage industries, markets and orchards.

Optional Beach Breaks at Beautiful Beach Destinations

Relaxation seekers will love the stunning beaches of:

  • Nha Trang – Pristine turquoise waters along with luxury hotels and resorts. Enjoy snorkeling, diving, boat trips, and seafood.
  • Phu Quoc Island – Tropical island getaway with expansive white sand beaches, five star beachside resorts, snorkeling, watersports, fishing villages, and seafood feasts.

Essential Activities to Include on a Vietnam Tour

Beyond seeing the top landmarks, make sure your Vietnam tour incorporates these quintessential experiences:

Cruise Stunning Ha Long Bay

Gliding through the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay past thousands of dramatic limestone karst formations rising from the sea is an iconic Vietnam experience. Multi-day cruises allow more time to soak in the beauty while sea kayaking, swimming, and enjoying fresh seafood on board.

Bike Through the Imperial City of Hue

Once the capital during Vietnam’s Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945, Hue holds expansive palaces, pagodas, tombs, temples, and the massive walled Imperial City along the Perfume River. Exploring by bicycle or traditional cyclo is ideal.

Wander Hoi An’s Ancient Town

The enchanting Ancient Town of Hoi An near the coast reveals a wonderfully preserved old trading port, with buildings dating back to the 15th-19th century. Wandering the historic streets lined with colorful lanterns, craft shops, cafes and temples offers rich immersion in Vietnamese culture.

Visit the Cu Chi Tunnels

Traveling to the historic Cu Chi Tunnels just outside Ho Chi Minh City provides an adventurous cultural experience. This network of underground tunnels served as hideouts and living quarters for the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War era.

Enjoy a Sampan Boat Ride in the Mekong Delta

Glide through lush waterways past floating markets, villages and orchards of the Mekong Delta also known as the “Rice Basket of Vietnam”. The relaxed pace of experiencing the scenery, cottage industries and culture by traditional sampan boat makes for a memorable journey.

Relax at Beautiful Nha Trang or Phu Quoc Beaches

Soft white sand beaches, azure waters, fresh seafood and luxury resorts make places like Nha Trang on the central coast and Phu Quoc Island in the south ideal for honeymoons or pure relaxation. Activities range from watersports and boat trips to sublime spa treatments.

Stay in Rural Homestays with Locals

For cultural immersion, spend a night or more at a homestay in rural villages like those around Mai Chau or Sapa. Interact with welcoming minority tribe families, enjoy home cooked food, and experience traditional local life.

When to Visit for a Vietnam Tour Package

Vietnam’s weather varies by region, so optimal times depend where your tour travels:

  • North : Cooler and drier November to April. May to October is hotter with more rain.
  • Central : Dry season January to August brings sunshine. September to December has more rain.
  • South : November to April has less humidity and rain. May to October is hotter and rainier.

Know Regional Climate Nuances

Vietnam’s weather shifts across the country, so seasons differ by location. The early dry months of November and December before monsoons hit provide pleasant weather countrywide.

  • North – Winters can get chilly at higher elevation like Sapa. Summers are hot and humid with August to October typhoon risks.
  • Central – Summers bring sunshine but occasional storms. Winters are mild.
  • South – High heat and humidity year round with May to October monsoons.

Time for Major Festivals

Vietnam’s biggest holiday period revolves around Tet – the Lunar New Year in January or February. Expect huge crowds and closures but great energy. The Mid-Autumn festival in September/October also draws crowds with glowing lanterns.

Booking Flights and Pre/Post Tour Options

Gateway city flight options.

  • West Coast – Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle
  • Midwest – Chicago, Houston
  • East Coast – New York, Washington DC, Atlanta

Stopovers and Open Jaw Flights

Add a stopover in Tokyo, Seoul or Taipei. Do an open-jaw flight into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City (or vice versa) to maximize coverage.

Early and Late Tour Accommodations

Arrive a day or two before your tour starts to shake off jetlag and get your bearings. Add days after to extend the experience at your own pace.

Regional Side Trips

Add-on trips to Cambodia, Laos or Thailand easily combine with a Vietnam tour for an Indochina experience. Cruises visit nearby Ha Long Bay, Thailand’s Phi Phi Islands or Bali.

Take a dreamy Halong Bay cruise

Board a traditional Vietnamese junk boat and cruise the emerald waters and limestone karsts of Halong Bay. We’ll visit Tien Ong Cave and Cua Van Fishing Village, enjoy a swim at one of the golden beaches, then watch a cooking demonstration and the dazzling sunset on the boat, where we’ll sleep for the night.

Enjoy a Water Puppet performance in a local theater

The Water Puppet performance is a northern Vietnamese art form, which paints the story of rural life in Vietnam a thousand years ago. The puppeteers stand in waist-high water to represent flooded rice fields and you’ll be swept up in the legends they tell through their dancing puppets.

Visit Cua Van Fishing Village

We’ll visit the ancient Cua Van Fishing Village on our Halong Bay cruise, and stop to meet the locals who live in the traditional floating houses. It’s the largest fishing village in Halong Bay, with around 180 floating houses set on gentle waters surrounded by beautiful limestone mountains.

Help local farmers in Thanh Dong Organic Village

Our Local Specialists will take you to Thanh Dong Organic Village in Hoi An, where you’ll meet the local farmers and spend time learning about their daily working routines. You’ll also get to help the farmers in the garden and discover their unique methods that leave a positive impact on their environment.

Visit the UNESCO-listed Imperial Citadel in Hue

Jump on the back of a cyclo and take a journey to the Imperial Citadel in Hue, the former capital and home of the Nguyen emperors. You can enter the large square fortress and explore the ancient palaces and temples, and we’ll even take you inside the Purple Forbidden City.

Our top 5 things to do in Vietnam

Our Vietnam vacation packages reveal the magic of the country, from the magnificent Halong Bay and the ancient citadel of Hue, to the local farmers in Hoi An.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

Located in Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the final resting place of President Ho Chi Minh, the iconic Vietnamese Revolutionary leader. Known to his people as ‘Uncle Ho’, his body is preserved in a glass case and protected by a military honor guard.

Temple of Literature

One of Hanoi’s most beautiful sites, the Temple of Literature is an ancient complex built in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius and scholars. It’s also home to the Imperial Academy, Vietnam’s first university and you can see the historic pavilions, turtle steles, courtyards, a lake of literature and the Well of Heavenly Clarity.

My Son Temples

The My Son Temples are a complex of ancient Hindu temples, built between the 4th and 14th century to worship the god Shiva. It was once the site of royal religious ceremonies and the burial place for Cham royalty, and today you can explore the ruins of this UNESCO-listed site.

Best museums in Vietnam

Our Vietnam escorted tours will reveal the country’s best museums, from the ancient My Son Temples to the resting place of President Ho Chi Minh.

One of Vietnam’s most famous dishes, pho is a noodle soup that’s loved all over the world. It’s made from a slow-stewed beef broth poured over rice noodles, and topped with slices of chicken or beef. You can also add a variety of herbs, sauces and chilli to your tastes.

Also known as rice paper spring rolls, goi cuon are light and fresh rolls with plenty of flavor. A rice paper wrapping is filled with bean sprouts, lettuce, meat or tofu and other crunchy vegetables. It’s best served with a sweet or spicy sauce for dipping.

Banh xeo is a thin crepe filled with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts and fresh herbs. It’s a classic northern Vietnamese dish with French influences, and the best way to eat it is cut it up in bite-sized pieces, roll it up in lettuce leaves and dunk it into the zesty side sauces.

Best food in Vietnam

An organised trip to Vietnam with Trafalgar will ensure you taste the best of Vietnam’s incredible cuisine, from warm bowls of pho to fresh goi cuon rolls.

Geography and environment during Vietnam tour packages

If you're looking for a fantastic vacation destination in Southeast Asia, Vietnam should be at the top of your list. With its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Vietnam tour packages have something to offer every traveler. Vietnam, which occupies a long and narrow section of the Indochina peninsula, borders China, Laos, and Cambodia. Mountains can be found throughout most of Vietnam, particularly in the North and Central Highlands. The majority of the people in Vietnam live in low-lying areas with easy infrastructure and public and fertile agricultural land. Vietnam frequently experiences flooding because of the Mekong, one of the world's 12 major rivers. The Mekong Delta and nearby areas have experienced less flooding thanks to the canal and dike system's ability to distribute floodwater.

Vietnam History - Vietnam tour packages

Early History

The area that is now Vietnam has been inhabited since the beginning of time. According to archaeological discoveries, organized communities started to emerge as early as the first millennium BC. Up until the Chinese invasion in 111 BC, which caused the societies of Vietnam and China to converge, early society was mostly focused on agriculture and feudalism, with numerous dynasties ruling over different regions of Vietnam. For hundreds of years, the region was ruled by various Chinese dynasties, but in 905, the Vietnamese gained independence as a result of uprisings. Vietnam entered an era of independence in 938, marking the end of this period of Chinese imperial rule.

Recent History

French colonialists who took over Vietnam following the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885 had an influence on it during the 19th century. Parts of Vietnam were included in French Indochina and Cambodia, and Laos which was created in 1887. First, after Vietnamese troops beat French forces in the Indochina War in 1954, the French were finally forced to give up control of the internal independence movements they had long sought to stifle. Vietnam was split up after this conflict, with separate governments in the north (headed by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with American support).

The second Indochina War caused widespread destruction and upheaval for the Vietnamese people, and as a result, a large number of individuals left Vietnam in search of sanctuary in other parts of the world. Vietnam's economy had almost completely collapsed by the 1980s, which prompted additional waves of emigration from Vietnam. Vietnam has lately profited from the free economy that was established in 1986. Vietnam's economy is still growing, with agricultural and manufacturing serving as the foundation and the tour operators also making a contribution. Despite the fact that many Vietnamese people are living in poverty, literacy rates have increased significantly.

While Vietnam's history has been marked by conflict and hardship, the country has made significant strides in recent years towards economic growth and development. With a booming tourism industry and a wide range of Vietnam tour packages to choose from, travelers from all over the world are discovering the beauty and charm of this Indochina gem.

Shopping in Vietnam - Vietnam tour packages

Vietnamese markets and small businesses are a good mix of the intriguing; the finest choices include handicrafts, art, and and clothing, which can be explored through Vietnam tour packages.

To be sure that you can carry particular things back into your place of origin, it is a good idea to verify with your local customs officers. In general, quarantine regulations in Australia and New Zealand are strict.

Vietnam souvernirs for Vietnam tour packages

1. Tailored Clothing

One of the best places on the planet to find high-quality custom apparel is Hoi An. Locate a tailor, select your fabrics, get fitted, then come back later to pick up your bespoke clothing.

2. Hilltribe Handicrafts

Some of the hill tribes during the Vietnam tour produce great woven jewelry, apparel, and bags that make thoughtful gifts for family and friends back home.

Vietnamese coffee is among the greatest in the world, and it comes from one of the biggest exporters in the world. Why not bring a little bit of Vietnam's tour home with you if you are a coffee habitué?

4. Lacquerware

Vietnamese lacquer art is created through a labor-intensive, lengthy process that yields a stunning, smooth, and polished finish that covers everything from bowls to jewelry boxes and paintings. Although those are not the low-priced keepsakes, genuine lacquer work is pricey but worth while during Vietnam tour packages.

Places to visit in Vietnam tour packages

Halong Bay in the early morning is unlike anything else. Hundreds of enormous karst structures may be seen rising above the boat as the mists dissipate. It feels like you are waking up in a watercolor painting of a mystical place in the beautiful morning light. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Halong Bay in Vietnam is through well-designed Vietnam vacation packages that cater to your interests and preferences.

When visiting the capital of Vietnam through Vietnam tour packages, Hanoi, the phrase "motorcycle" comes up frequently. It's insane and chaotic, but it manages to work. It is preferable to take in this exotic vista from a rooftop cafe. Watch the uproar below as you place another coffee order.

The Mekong Delta is a must see attraction in Vietnam tour packages. Some of the friendliest people on earth reside in this wide region of floating marketplaces, emerald rice paddies, and verdant islands. For a first-hand view of life in the Delta and to get to know your neighbors, set sail for one of the sleeping islands.

Vietnam vacation packages offer an excellent opportunity to explore the vibrant villages of Vietnam's minority groups such as the Zay and the Blue and Black H'mong, amid the highlands. Due to the area's isolation, an overnight hike where you stay with a local family is a great way to explore it.

Quy Nhon is a charming seaside off the major tourist route. Even a driving trip here is worthwhile. Islands, lagoons, and dunes gradually give way to paddy fields and large plantations as the route follows rocky slopes plunging into the South China Sea. A place worth going when thinking about a Vietnam tour package.

Hue is a city for heritage aficionados since it is crammed with imperial monuments. Prior to channeling your internal emperor and having a dragonboat journey down the Perfume River, discover the Citadel and its abandoned Forbidden Purple City.

Boot manufacturers, tailors, and artisans call this shopping heaven home more than you could possibly visit in a lifetime. Hire a bicycle and tour the Old Town while you wait for your suit to be constructed; the streets are gloriously car-free.

Most people still refer to HCMC as Saigon, and it is a busy metropolis. It moves quickly, is thrilling, and has wonderful sights. Skyscrapers, cathedrals, and markets all coexist in a heady mingling of traditional, colonial, and modern architecture.

The hustle and bustle of Hanoi seems a million miles away in Mai Chau. The tranquil atmosphere is aided by misty mountains and verdant rice fields. Be sure to keep an eye out for the traditional textiles produced by the local White Thai population during Vietnam tour packages.

Known as the "honeymoon capital" of Vietnam, is perpetually the must-going place in the spring. Discover the bizarre local artists, take in the French-inspired ambiance, and explore the nearby lakes, waterfalls, and forests. Fantastic!

Vietnam tour packages - Vietnam Culture and Custom

The Chinese, Khmer, French, and American civilizations have all had a different impact on Vietnam's ancient culture over hundreds of years, which may be centuries old. Whether they hail from remote villages or live in bustling metropolises, family and community connections are important to the majority of Vietnamese people. The majority of festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family, where rituals are performed, special foods are enjoyed, symbolic presents are exchanged, and ancestors are honored. Although there are certainly a lot of Catholics in Vietnam, the majority of Vietnamese practice a fascinating blend of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. When the Vietnam War brought hardships in the 1960s and 1970s, the majority of Vietnamese people desired to integrate into society, live optimistically and modestly. Let's experience the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam through its festivals, rituals, and special foods with the help of Vietnam tour packages.

Complex and Compelling

Vietnam, a nation with a long history, boasts a wealth of natural and cultural treasures. Vietnamese Buddhism has given rise to unbelievable religious structures. Rivers such as the Mekong run throughout the country, adorned with picturesque islands. Welcoming villages rest along their shores. Its street food has become a must for international foodies. Cities such as Hanoi bustle with energy and ancient places such as Hoi An welcome travelers. All told, Vietnam is simply a feast for the senses.

Destination Must-See's

Vietnam new ms1

Halong Bay:

According to legend, Halong Bay—or “descending dragon bay”—was formed when a god sent down a dragon that was the source of the 1,600 limestone pillars that populate the bay. Now you can wind your way through this karst landscape by boat and view these impressive outcroppings, some of which rise up more than 300 feet. Most are uninhabited, but those that are provide a prime habitat for fishermen. Halong Bay was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.

Hoi An Ancient Town:

Located at the mouth of the Thu Bon River, Hoi An’s ancient town is an example of a well-preserved South-East Asian trading port. Most active from the 15th to the 19th centuries, the influence of Chinese and European travelers combined with that of the local inhabitants to make Hoi An exceptional. Its structures are mostly made of wood, and include more than a thousand timber-frame buildings. While its economic contributions today are primarily from fishing, the trading port’s decline in the late 19th century helped it retain its traditional urban atmosphere. Hoi An Ancient Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999.

Vietnam ms3

Hue Complex of Monuments — Hue City:

Hue was established as the capital of unified Vietnam in 1802, and until 1945 it was a key political, cultural and religious center. Today it is a fine example of a unique feudal capital. The Nguyen Dynasty, Vietnam’s last royal dynasty, left its indelible mark here. Hoang Thanh (Imperial City), Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Purple City), the Imperial Residence, and other royal palaces comprise the Hue Complex. Wars and natural disasters took their toll; in response the area was designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1993. This has led to the restoration of 132 monuments so far.

Vietnam ms4

My Son Sanctuary—Hoi An:

My Son means “Kingdom of Cham.” This cluster of partially ruined temples and tombs sprang from the ancient Champa Kingdom of southern Vietnam. The religious buildings, made of red bricks and sandstone, were constructed from the 4th to 13th centuries—spanning 10 centuries of continuous development. The sacred Thu Bon River flows past the monuments, which have Hindu rather than Buddhist origins and were devoted to Hindu divinities such as Shiva. Partially destroyed by the U.S. during the Vietnam War, 70 structures remain and have been safeguarded by UNESCO since 1999.

Destination Must-Do's

Vietnam md1

Travel by boat:

One of the longest rivers in the world, the 2,500-mile-long Mekong River runs through Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand in addition to Vietnam in its “lower course.” Partake of a cruise on this bustling river and experience the Mekong Delta like a native. Don’t let the name fool you: a “junk boat” is an ancient Chinese sailing vessel with striking rectangular sails, and is the perfect way to cruise the emerald waters of Halong Bay. View rice paddy fields and the 1,000+ limestone “islands.” A cruise along the Perfume River reveals Hue’s Imperial past. Wind your way through the Capital City, the Imperial City, the Forbidden Purple City, and the Inner City. Traveling by boat is truly an ideal way to get to know Vietnam.

Vietnam md2

The Vietnam War:

Or, as the Vietnamese call it, the American War. One cannot escape the vestiges of the war when in Vietnam. In response, the Vietnamese government has developed a nationwide network of war memorial theme parks. The Vietnam War memorial park in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is host to the Cu Chi Tunnels. During the war, the Viet Cong dug tens of thousands of miles of tunnels that run underneath the Cu Chi district. The term “tunnel rats” was born here. They are now a popular tourist destination.

Vietnam md3

A pagoda is a tiered tower with multiple eaves that is associated with the Buddhist temple complex. Vietnam has many pagodas worth a visit. The Thien Mu Pagoda, or the Heavenly Lady Pagoda, is located in Hue, on the north bank of the Perfume River. One of Vietnam’s oldest and most remarkable religious buildings, construction on the seven-tiered Thien Mu Pagoda began in 1601. The Mia Pagoda, located near Hanoi, is known for its statues. It has 287 Buddha statues, each with its own expression, design and color. Hanoi’s One Pillar Pagoda is located in a lotus pond. It is said to represent a lotus flower, the Buddhist symbol of purity. Built of wood on a single stone pillar, the One Pillar Pagoda is one of Vietnam’s most iconic Buddhist temples.

Get a taste of Vietnam:

What better way to experience Vietnam than through its food? When in Hoi An, you can visit a market, interact with vendors, and learn about traditional ingredients. Afterward, enjoy a lunch made with these ingredients. In the rural Ky Son Village, a local chef demonstrates local culinary traditions before a lunch highlighting regional cuisine. Visit the Tra Que Herb Village, a small farming community. Observe the farmers tending their crops and sample some local delicacies. Savor the experience!

History and government, early history.

Vietnam has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological finds suggest that structured societies existed as early as the 1st millennium BC. Early society was mostly feudal and agriculture-based, with various dynasties overseeing different parts of Vietnam until the Chinese invasion of 111 BC, which saw the societies of Vietnam and China intertwined. Various Chinese dynasties dominated the area for hundreds of years, although revolts finally led to Vietnam gaining self-autonomy in 905. By 938, this period of Chinese imperial domination came to a close and Vietnam entered into an age of independence.

Recent history

During the 19th century, Vietnam came under the influence of French colonisers, who assumed control of Vietnam after the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885. French Indochina was formed in 1887, and included parts of Vietnam, Cambodia and, later on, Laos. Although the French managed to suppress internal movements towards independence for many years, their control was finally relinquished in 1954 when Vietnamese forces overcame the French during the first Indochina War. Following this war, Vietnam was divided, with separate forces ruling the north (led by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with support from the United States).

The second Indochina War created wide-scale devastation and turmoil for the people of Vietnam, leading to mass migration to other parts of the world as asylum seekers tried to escape the conflict. More recently, Vietnam has benefited from the free market economy set up in 1986. Vietnam's economy continues to expand, with agriculture and industry providing the backbone and the tourism sector also contributing. Although many Vietnamese people live below the poverty line, there have been widespread improvements in literacy and health, which hopefully will continue to improve in the future.

Geography and environment

Occupying a long, thin part of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam shares borders with China , Laos and Cambodia . Much of Vietnam's terrain is mountainous, particularly the north and central highland regions. Although people still choose to live in the densely forested highland regions, most of Vietnam's population is concentrated in the cities of the low-lying areas, where infrastructure is more easily built and the land is fertile. One of the 12 great rivers of the world, the Mekong, runs through Vietnam and has been responsible for wide-scale flooding. A system of canals and levees has been quite successful in redistributing the water during monsoons, and has helped to alleviate flooding in the Mekong Delta and surrounding areas.

Vietnam has a nice mix of interesting markets and small shops, with handicrafts, art and clothing among the best picks.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Vietnam

1. Tailored clothing

Hoi An is one of the best places in the world to get tailor-made clothing at a great price. Find a tailor, choose your fabric, get measured and return later to collect your custom-made fashion.

2. Hilltribe handicrafts

Some of Vietnam's hilltribe people make excellent woven bags, clothing and jewellery which make meaningful souvenirs for friends back home.

As one of the world's largest coffee exporters, Vietnamese coffee is among the world's best. If you’re a coffee fan, why not take a little taste of Vietnam home with you.

4. Lacquerware

The time-consuming, intensive process of creating Vietnamese lacquer art results in a beautiful, smooth and polished finish that adorns everything from bowls to paintings and jewellery boxes. While not the cheapest of souvenirs, authentic lacquer art is worth spending a bit more on.

Culture and customs

Vietnam's ancient culture can be traced back centuries and over the years has been influenced in different ways by the Chinese, Khmer, French and American cultures. For most Vietnamese people, connection to family and community is paramount - whether they are from rural villages or living in fast-paced cities.

Most festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family - participating in rituals, feasting on special foods, giving symbolic gifts and paying respects to ancestors. Most Vietnamese people practice a form of religion that is an interesting mix of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, although there are also a large number of practising Catholics living in Vietnam.

Having endured the hardship that the Vietnam War brought in the 1960s and 1970s, most Vietnamese people are keen to get on with life, living with a sense of optimism and humility.

Vietnam has an incredibly diverse tropical climate, and temperatures vary from 4°C in Sapa in winter to humid 36°C days in Saigon in the middle of the dry season. The monsoons bring heavy rain to the south, and a cooler winter to the north depending on when you plan to tour Vietnam.

What kinds of accommodation will I have in Vietnam?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.  When travelling with us in Vietnam you may find yourself staying in a:

  • Overnight boat

Sleeping aboard a boat on Halong Bay is a quintessential Vietnamese experience to be savoured. Slip into relaxation mode as you take in stunning views of the surrounding limestone karst scenery.

Get acquainted with the Vietnamese way of life while on a memorable home stay. Be exposed to new languages, cuisine and customs while making friends with your hosts and neighbours.

What kinds of transport will I be using in Vietnam?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Vietnam, you may find yourself travelling by:

  • Overnight sleeper train

Travelling aboard an overnight sleeper train is a fun way to journey through Vietnam. Interact with other passengers or sit by a window and watch the world go by.

Curious? Click here read more about what to expect on an overnight train.

Take time to wave to locals as you cycle at a leisurely pace past rice paddies and through simple villages in rural Vietnam

These 3 wheeled vehicles are a great way to zip around the sights.

Is Vietnam a LGBTQIA+ friendly destination?

The LGBQTIA+ community is gradually gaining recognition in Vietnam, with gay pride parades becoming a regular occurrence and a lift on same-sex marriage bans in 2015. With that said, Vietnam is still a conservative culture and many still hide their sexuality from their families. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have some gay-friendly bars and events. It's generally recommended that both gay and straight couples resist showing public displays of affection.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Does my trip to Vietnam support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Vietnam directly support our foundation partners, Blue Dragon Children's Foundation, Vun Art and WildAct .

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Blue Dragon Children's Foundation Blue Dragon Children's Foundation is helping disadvantaged youth in Vietnam, fighting the causes of human trafficking and (where possible) reuniting homeless or trafficked children with their families. Donations from our trips help their team of social workers, psychologists, teachers, and lawyers to offer individualised support to every child rescued.

Find out more or make a donation

Vun Art Vun Art empowers people with disabilities in Vietnam through vocational training and employment opportunities. They teach traditional folk painting using recycled materials which provides job opportunities, helps to preserve the ancient artform and cares for the local environment all at once. Donations from our trips support Vun Art's capacity-building programs for people with disabilities, including trainees' allowance, transportation, and equipment.

WildAct protects migratory birds of Vietnam and reduces illegal hunting by educating local communities about the importance of conservation. Donations from our trips help WildAct run educational programs to stop the illegal hunting of threatened migratory birds through knowledge-sharing in local communities.

Is Vietnam accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Despite having a high population of people with disabilities, accessible infrastructure and facilities are still limited in Vietnam. Chaotic traffic and pavements blocked by parked motorbikes and street stalls, uneven footpaths and high curbs add to the challenges of getting around for travellers with mobility or vision disabilities. Most entrances to hotels, shops, restaurants and tourist sites will have steps and many doorways will not be able to accommodate wheelchairs wider than 60cm. Some sights and destinations will not be fully accessible (ie. Ha Long Bay boats, Cu Chi Tunnels) but other places such as Hoi An are flat and much more wheelchair-friendly. There are likely to be situations where travellers with disabilities may need to rely on local people to help. Taxis are readily available and an affordable way to get around for travellers who are not confident in exploring independently on foot.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

From start to finish, this tour was an exceptional experience. Alex, our travel advisor, was incredibly helpful in answering all of our questions and putting together a tailored itinerary that perfectly fit our interests and preferences. We were able to visit some of Vietnam's most iconic sites, including Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and the Cu Chi Tunnels, as well as lesser-known but equally fascinating places like the Mekong Delta and the Marble Mountains.

The accommodations throughout the tour were top-notch, with clean and comfortable rooms, delicious food, and friendly staff. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, personable, and went out of his way to make sure that we had the best possible experience. He was always available to answer our questions, offer suggestions, and make sure that we were comfortable.

One of the highlights of the tour was the opportunity to meet and interact with local people, both in the cities and in more rural areas. We were able to learn about their culture and way of life, and even participate in some traditional activities like making rice paper and fishing with local fishermen.

Overall, I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. If you are looking for an immersive and unforgettable experience in Vietnam, IDC Travel and Alex are the way to go. Thank you for an incredible trip!

The most famous tourist places in Vietnam

Vietnam has been blessed with splendid beauty, majestic mountains, marvelous beaches and magnificent limestones. Beyond its unique nature, Vietnam is home to many world-famous ancient cities, French colonial buildings, Buddhist shrines and hill tribe villages. Finally, end your vacation gently with the city that has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world – Nha Trang.

Arriving in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), you will begin sightseeing in crowded South Vietnam with a city of 10 million people teeming with all kinds of services and entertainment activities. Top 5 Vietnam Private Tours For Your 2023 Holiday

Vietnam private tours - cover

For many years, Vietnam has been a popular destination for visitors looking to discover stunning landscapes and unique culture. You can go alone or in a small group with your friends for maximum comfort, but you may miss out on local experiences if you do not have a local guide. On the other side, a group trip may provide you with local knowledge, but you may have to sacrifice it for flexibility.

What about a Vietnam private tour? Will it be the best of both worlds, allowing you to travel the country with your family and friends while maintaining complete flexibility? In this post, we will discuss why a private trip is a good choice and the 5 best Vietnam private tours that will allow you to discover our country’s charm.

Reasons To Go On A Vietnam Private Tour

Halong Bay - Vietnam private tours

1. Travel with your loved ones

2. travel with full flexibility.

Service is tailored to a Vietnam private tour, and the customer’s experience is prioritized. You can relax and enjoy your trip knowing that everything will be taken care of. If you are interested in past cultures or traditional architecture, a private tour guide can help you make your trip more cultural and historical. A Vietnam private trip may fulfill all of your needs, whether you want to roll around for Vietnamese street food or have an off-the-beaten-path experience.

3. More time-saving

When visiting Vietnam, especially major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Danang, you usually have a limited amount of time to tour the country. Because you are unfamiliar with the places, it will be tough to get directions and will take you a long time to travel. However, the private tour guide understands just how to get to the places as quickly as possible while also showing the best sights of the city along the way.

4. Discover more amazing experiences

When traveling with a Vietnamese private tour guide, you can get a lot of support fitting in with the locals’ way of life. As local tour guides, they will know exactly where the locals’ favorite hangouts are and will allow you to interact with the Vietnamese people to gain local appreciation.

5. Offer utmost comfort

Depending on your schedule, you will have a private transfer for the duration of your journey. You can travel safely and comfortably without fear, from airport pickup and drop-off to sightseeing in numerous areas. On this door-to-door service, you and your travel partners will be the only passengers. There will no longer be any strangers.

6. More cost-efficient

At first look, the cost of a tailored tour appears to be slightly higher than that of a package tour. However, the experience and knowledge gained on a personalized tour are worth three or four times that of group tours.

One of the numerous advantages of taking a private tour is that the Vietnamese tour guide offers you unique and specialized knowledge of the sites, and you may ask as many questions as you like during the journey. A group trip can take you to shopping districts with additional costs and less sightseeing time. In general, the price you pay for a private tour represents the true value you will receive throughout your amazing journeys in Vietnam.

7. You decide your travel date & time

Last but not least, the reason to select Vietnam private tours is the freedom to travel. You can choose how long you would like to stay in an area and where you want to go next. Unlike a group trip, when you have to linger at one location that you are not very interested in, private excursions allow you to cut it short and go for more intriguing destinations whenever you choose.

A Vietnam private tour not only provides you with demand-tailored adventures but also provides you with many interesting facts and stories about the attractions that you would never find on a group tour or solo travel.

Great trip. Excellent service, stunning scenery.

We have done The Best of Northern Vietnam 7 days tour and it was absolutely fabulous! Everything was exceptional, from the airport pick up to the last days of our trip. I would like to take this opportunity and thank everybody who made our trip so special and unforgettable and finally- Ms. Linda you are a star! Without you the trip would not be possible. I would like to thank you once again for your perfection while organising everything. You are lovely, extremely helpful and reliable. I will definitely be coming back to Vietnam to explore the south of this magnificent country.

Great service to suit every of our needs

Linda and Jenny are super helpful to accommodate to our different needs. Activities are well planned and transportation is great! Most importantly my friends and I are not too comfortable with traditional vietnamese food and they improve their menu everyday based on our feedback. The tour guide Hung is also very friendly and humorous, making the whole trip super enjoyable!

Simply the best operator

We did a trip to Halong Bay, to be followed by a visit to Sapa with day walks in the mountains. I can say that - after having done this trip on two previous occasions - this operator is simply the best. Ms Linda was absolutely flexible in adapting our trip to the change in weather.  At the end of our stay they even invited us to a hotpot dinner in their hotel in Hanoi. In addition to this, their pricing was very competitive for what you get. I can easily recommend you put all your travel needs in Vietnam in the hands of the team of this lovely company. Ms Linda is a star.

Tour of a lifetime

We did a 4 day tour to Sa Pa and Halong Bay out of Hanoi with Vietnam Typical Tours. We CANNOT recommend it enough. Ms. Jenny and Ms. Linda did an incredible job organizing and making sure we were taken care of. They really went above and beyond, bringing us dragon fruit from Ms. Jennys garden and taking us to froyo after the conclusion of the tour.

In particular, I want to note how excellent Le Su was as a tour guide in Sa Pa. Perhaps the best tour guide we’ve ever had. So deeply kind, knowledgeable, and fun to be with. THANK YOU Typical Tours. I’ll be pointing all my friends and family to them.
