Cicular Town Plan of Hamina
History & architecture, sometimes it is good just to wander around. in the old town of hamina, this happens even without planning, due to its circular town plan. the plan dates back to the beginning of 1720 when the town of hamina was under swedish rule. the town plan was based on a renaissance ideal circular shape and this decision was highly influenced by the town being situated within a star-shaped bastion fortress. located in the middle of the plan is the center of the city administration, the town hall, from which start eight radial streets., the monumental flag and flag world, the world’s largest, 486 square meter flag of finland was hoisted to europe’s highest, the 100-meter flagpole in 2019 celebrating the independence of finland. the flag is a joint gift of foreign states to the republic and the people of finland. the large blue cross flag is an attraction, which highlights the particular nature of the finnish people, but in a spirit that respects diversity and a sense of community. the largest finnish flag will be in 365 days a year, but on stormy winds, it can be pulled down. the flag is part of the flag world., hamina bastion - central bastion, the central bastion built in 1803-1811 is the largest bastion in the fortress of hamina. its 58 casemates, i.e. masonry vaults, were originally designed as explosion-proof storage facilities. today, the central bastion is the event arena hamina bastion, which is covered by the largest canopy in europe for the summer. the terraced stands can accommodate as many as 3,000 spectators. the vaults are equipped with modern technology, complete with restaurants and showrooms., shopkeeper's museum, completed in 1841, the wooden building housing the shopkeeper's museum is of high value in terms of its cultural history. the museum presents finnish-russian retailing traditions from the early 1900s. the most recent yard buildings date from the 1870s. the house was opened as a museum in the late 1970s. visitors can see what an old-fashioned finnish shop looked like at the beginning of the 20th century, when finland was still an autonomous part of the russian empire, and how craftsmen spent their everyday lives in their homes and yards., portimo nature trails, wildlife & nature, the portimo hiking trail is a network of paths in husula, kannusjärvi and kitula north of hamina. the routes of varying lengths are marked with blue dots in the forest and with signposts at intersections. the sceneries range from beautiful lake and pond views to fine sand ridges, rugged pine forests and beautiful countryside. starting places include the sports centre in ruissalo, vehkalinna in husula, vehkarinne in kannusjärvi and kisapirtti in kitula. there are two lean-tos and a lookout tower along the trails., reitin varrella.
The surroundings of Kotka and Hamina has a comprehensive range of places to visit for history enthusiasts. Alternatively, you can enjoy the nature in the marine archipelago scenery, by the Kymijoki rapids or in the Valkmusa National Park, which offers magnificent Finnish scenery. Hamina [dead link] is a town in Kymenlaakso , in the extreme southeast of Finland.
Understand [ edit ]
Hamina's history dates back to the Swedish rule , when Gustav Vasa gave Hamina Castle and the surrounding land to the merchant town of Hamina in 1653.
Hamina was an important trading town located on the border between Russia and Sweden. Its inhabitants traded with both countries, and trade was very important to the town's economy. Hamina also had an important harbour, from which goods were transported around the world.
In the 19th century, Hamina became even more important as the postal route from Saint Petersburg to Helsinki passed through the town. Along the road there were several inns where travellers could stay and rest.
After the war of 1808–1809, the peace treaty between Russia and Sweden was signed in Hamina Castle, confirming the annexation of Finland to the Russian Empire.
In the 20th century, Hamina's importance as a trading town declined. In 1920, a few years after Finnish independence, Hamina also became an important military town with the establishment of a major garrison - the Reserve Officer School. Their facilities make up the southeastern corner of the old town.

- The circular town plan . The town plan of Hamina is quite unique, with the town hall as the middle point the streets of the city are either encircling it or leading towards it.
- 60.570906 27.189706 1 Hamina fortress , Raatihuoneentori . ( updated Jun 2022 )
- 60.56968 27.19805 2 Town hall ( Raatihuone ). The beautiful yellow building right in the "epicenter" of the city, ie. the mid-point of the historical circular city plan, still houses the city government. ( updated May 2023 )
- 60.5652 27.1862 3 Lippupuisto . The location of the "flag park" is visible from far, as its centerpiece is the tallest flagpole in Europe (100 m tall) with a huge Finnish flag. It's surrounded by normal-sized flagpoles with flags of EU countries. ( updated May 2023 )
Do [ edit ]
Buy [ edit ].
In central Hamina you can find a couple of supermarkets, and a few dozen smaller businesses from clothing stores to opticians - just like in any mid-sized Finnish city.
- 60.56843 27.19248 1 Market square ( Kauppatori ). Food products, flowers, second-hand goods... the selection varies by the day. There's also a small stage with occasional music performances during the summer. ( updated May 2023 )
- 60.5707 27.1251 2 Disas , Puuropytyntie . The closest thing to a department store or shopping mall in Hamina, this is a fish shop that also has a large range of other food products. Foods other than fish and seafood is packaged or canned (don't expect fresh fruit or bread). It was established to cater to customers from nearby Russia, wherefore it seems rather "under-visited" after COVID and the war in Ukraine with subsequent limitations on allowing in Russians into the EU - it's still open though. ( updated May 2023 )

There are several fast food places in central Hamina, serving hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza or kebab.

Small towns have their own charm. Each of them has its own character. Hamina is one of the most attractive small towns in Finland . We recommend visiting Hamina if you will be traveling between Helsinki and St. Petersburg by car.
Don't fuss in small, old towns. Try a leisurely stroll through the old streets to get to know the character of the city. Walk along the quiet streets, admire the houses, monuments and take your time. After the construction of the bypass road, many tourists drive past Hamina, and the city has become even quieter and calmer.
Hamina is located in the province of Kymenlaakso in southeastern Finland, on the shores of the Gulf of Finland. The city is home to about 20 thousand inhabitants. See the map.
Length of drive from some cities:
- Helsinki - Hamina - 140 km.
- Kotka - Hamina - 25 km.
- Russian border crossing point - Hamina - 40 km.
- St. Petersburg - Hamina - 240 km.
Hamina is the oldest town in the Kymenlaakso region (founded in 1653). The city center has a radial-ring layout. The Town Hall Square is in the center.
Hamina's wooden houses, preserved military fortifications, monuments and seaside nature attract tourists to the city. It is better to get acquainted with the historical city center on foot.
Attractions and places to visit
Hamina Town Hall Square is the center of the city, but I usually start walking around Hamina from the Market Square.
Market Square
Market Square is a modern city center, a busy place on summer weekends. Hamina Market Square is located in the city center, 200 meters from the Town Hall Square (as well as from the bus station). At the edge of the square is the Flag Tower, where a tourist information point (maps, books and guides) is open in summer. Hamina Summer Park (Kesäpuisto) starts at the opposite end of the market square. (We recommend to visit.)
Town Hall Square
The Town Hall Square is the center of Hamina's radial circular plan. The square is 500 meters from the bus station. Hamina Town Hall is located in the middle of the Town Hall Square. This is a beautiful Empire style building designed by the renowned architect Engel. Eight streets branch off from the Town Hall Square in different directions. They are connected by two circular streets (Isoympyräkatu and Pikkuympyräkatu). Old wooden houses can be seen around the Town Hall Square. Well-preserved old wooden houses are the pride of the townspeople. Also there are nearby: Church of St. John, Church of Mary, Orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul, House-Museum of a merchant, City Museum.
Hamina Bastioni
Hamina Bastioni is not a bastion, not a military fortification, but an event venue (event arena) located in the territory of military fortifications. The arena has a canopy that can protect from both rain and sun. The Hamina Bastion Arena regularly hosts events, the most famous of which are the Hamina Tattoo International Military Music Festival and the Night of Lights City Festival. Distance from the Town Hall Square is about 150 meters.
Reserve Officers School
The territory of southeastern Finland has been involved in many wars, so it is not surprising that there are military institutions and monuments here. The main building of the School for Reserve Officers (Reserviupseerikoulu, RUK) in Hamina is located 200 meters from the Town Hall Square. Near the main building of the Reserve Officers' School there is a monument to fallen officers and monuments - artillery pieces.
The Museum of the School of Reserve Officers is located on the street 300 meters from the main building. The museum has more than 900 exhibits. In front of the museum there is an STU-40 self-propelled gun from the Second World War as a monument.
Monument to Varvara
The monument to Varvara is located on Kadettikulunkatu Street, between the main building of the School of Reserve Officers and the RUK Museum. The Veikko Haukkavaara sculpture depicts Varvara Shantina (1870-1941), who traded in baked goods and sold pies to the cadets. The monument was installed her former grateful clients in 1972. Address: Kadettikoulunkatu 7, Hamina.
If you want to feel the atmosphere of a seaside town, head to Haminan Tervasaari. Tervasaari is a beautiful place, a popular summer vacation spot for the townspeople. Tervasaari is about 1 km from Hamina Bus Station. There is an old customs warehouse building, the Hyöky museum ship, an embankment, a cafe, a beach, a barbecue area, a summer guest harbor.
These are not all interesting places in Hamina. In fact, you need to come to Hamina (as well as to Finland in general) to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in big cities. To get the maximum effect, you need to spend several days here and there is no hurry.
Accommodation
Hamina is a small town with few hotels. But, usually, there are enough places to stay for all tourists. On days of public events, you may have to look for accommodation in neighboring cities (for example, in Kotka).
SpaHotel Hamina. The hotel is located in the center of Hamina, next to the Market Square. The hotel's spa includes swimming pools, a hot tub, cold pool, hot tubs, saunas and a gym. Address: Sibeliuskatu 32, 49400 Hamina, Finland.
Haminan Seurahuone. The hotel is located in a historic building in the city center, between the Town Hall and the Market Square. Rooms have refrigerators and tea / coffee making facilities. Address: Pikkuympyräkatu 5, 49400 Hamina, Finland.
Book a place to stay .
Camping Pitkäthiekat. The camping is located by the sea, about 6.5 km from the center of Hamina (before reaching the city from the border). The campsite has different accommodation options: small cottages, places for campers and tents. The terrace offers sea views. There is a sandy beach.

Tuhansien tarinoiden Hamina
Suuriruhtinaskunnan aikana 1800-luvulla Hamina kukoisti kulttuurien kohtaamispaikkana.
Anna jouluisen Haminan lumota
Pikkuruiseen maailmanluokan Haminaan mahtuu valtava määrä tarinoita. Anna Haminan valloittaa sinutkin.
Rentoudu Tervasaaressa
Merellisen Haminan Tervasaaressa vietät leppoisaa kesäpäivää terasseilla auringon kimmeltäessä meren aalloilla, ohilipuvia veneitä ihaillen. Taksiveneillä hurautat saaristoon tai parkkeeraat oman jollasi vierasvenesatamaan. Kauppatorille kävelet 20 minuutissa ja jos mielit kauemmas pyöräilyrundille vaikkapa Hamina Campingille hiekkarannalle loikoilemaan, voit napata käyttöösi kaupunkipyörän.
Patikoi maaseudulla
Anna Haminan maaseudun ja metsäpolkujen hurmata. Lähde vaikkapa Portimon poluille rauhoittumaan jylhien metsien siimekseen. Patikoi upeissa maisemissa ja pysähdy nauttimaan hetkestä laavutulen loisteeseen.
