EBMUD's Treatment Plant treats sewage to meet stringent state and federal standards before recycling it or releasing it to the Bay. Get to Know EBMUD's Wastewater Treatment Plant!

Have you ever wondered about what happens to dirty water after it goes down the drain or is flushed down the toilet? EBMUD offers three options to learn more about how wastewater treatment protects public health and the San Francisco Bay:

  • Online virtual tour
  • Live-guided virtual tour
  • In-person tour

1. Online Virtual Tour

The online virtual tour “From your tap to the San Francisco Bay” is EBMUD’s newest online educational resource. The tour features a variety of engaging videos and interactive maps to help audiences of all levels learn about EBMUD’s Main Wastewater Treatment Plant.

2. Live-Guided Virtual Tour

The live-guided virtual tour is a one-hour, interactive PowerPoint presentation conducted over Zoom with an EBMUD staff member. This tour covers a range of topics, including types of wastewater, contaminants, pollution prevention, history of wastewater treatment, wastewater treatment fundamentals, and beneficial reuse. The tour is strategically designed for non-technical audiences around the high-school level; however, it can be customized as needed for special tour requests, e.g. younger audiences, graduate-level, etc.

Wednesday April 3, 2024: 6:00pm-7:00pm

Submit a  Group Tour Request Form  to schedule a virtual tour for your school, work, or community group. Reservation priority is given to schools in EBMUD's wastewater service area.

3. In-Person Tour

Visitors must be over 10 years old.

The in-person tour is led by an EBMUD staff member at the Main Wastewater Treatment Plant and is approximately 1.5 hours. Chaperones are required for children and all attendees must be over 10 years old. Individual safety waivers are required. Safety is EBMUD’s top priority, as the treatment plant is an active, fully operational plant with heavy truck traffic. This tour involves walking up and down narrow stairways, walking over uneven ground, and potentially being exposed to strong odors and birds.

To schedule an in-person tour for your school, work, or community group:

Treatment Plant Tours

A guide pointing to the left during a tour in the winter.

Every day, our nine treatment plants treat approximately 250 million gallons of wastewater to protect public health and the environment.

Several of our treatment plants offer a limited number of tours each month to show the general public how the water they use from nature is cleaned and safely returned to the environment. Visitors see the various ways pollutants are removed from wastewater, replicating nature’s own processes, but in a much shorter time frame. They also may see how wastewater solids are processed for beneficial reuse and how energy is recovered to power our treatment plants.

We are limiting tours at the Metro Plant due to construction projects. The safety of our staff and guests is a top priority. A tour at one of our other eight treatment plants may be easier to schedule.

WSSC Water’s Creative Virtual Platform Brings the Wastewater Treatment Experience to Local Classrooms

waste water treatment plant virtual tour

WSSC Water's Education Outreach team created immersive Google Earth tours for two of their Water Resource Recovery Facilities - formerly known as wastewater treatment plants - to meet the high demand for plant tours impeded due to staffing and facility restrictions. The virtual platform allows students to explore all aspects of the plant and learn about the wastewater treatment process from the comfort of their classroom or home.

Thanks to 360-degree photos and Google satellite images, students can understand what happens to water after use and the science and engineering needed to return clean water to the tributaries of Chesapeake Bay. At the request of educators, WSSC Water also developed a facilitation guide to provide more in-depth information about wastewater treatment and sample activities for a more hands-on learning experience. Local educators reviewed all materials to ensure they met state standards.

WSSC Water’s Education Outreach team learned about using Google Earth Projects through a workshop hosted by NOAA’s Environmental Sciences Training Center and the American Geoscience Institute. The virtual tours were a success due to the assistance and expertise of plant staff, who ensured all content was accurate. The “Introduction to Wastewater Treatment” materials are accessible to those who request access via WSSC Water’s website: https://www.wsscwater.com/educationoutreach .

NACWA awarded WSSC Water a 2023 National Environmental Achievement Award in the Public Information & Education: Educational Program category for its creative and effective educational platform. Congratulations to everyone involved!
