Guide to Thrill Island & Category 6 Waterpark on Icon of the Seas

When it comes to Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas , there is plenty that’s completely new to the fleet. And the ship — the largest cruise ship on the planet — is arguably the most talked-about vessel ever to hit the water.

But without a doubt the most eye-catching and discussed feature of Royal Caribbean’s newest ship is the massive waterpark that dominates the back of the ship. This waterpark, dubbed Category 6, is actually part of a larger neighborhood on the ship known as Thrill Island.

Given that this is set to be one of the biggest draws to sailing Icon of the Seas, here’s what you should know about the area before you sail…

What Is Thrill Island?

water park on cruise ship

Put simply, you can think of Thrill Island as a full theme park aboard Icon of the Seas. The area covers a massive portion of the aft park of the ship. Whereas on some cruise ships this area might house a pool or open space for lounge chairs, Royal Caribbean has turned it into a complete destination.

Everything here is designed to be fun and active, with a focus on being outdoors for the entire family. Whether you have kids (or yourself) that want to take on the biggest waterslides at sea… or you’d rather find a spot on the deck to watch, Thrill Island looks to have you covered.

What Attractions Are There With Thrill Island?

Royal Caribbean designed the area to be a place where you can literally spend all day given the number of attractions. In fact, even if you’re hungry you don’t have to leave Thrill Island. Here’s a full list of everything that Royal Caribbean has included in the area:

Flowrider Fans of Royal Caribbean will know the Flowrider. The standing wave simulator gives passengers the chance to boogie board or surf while on the ship. And while some of the cruise line’s largest ships have two of the rides, Icon of the Seas will only have one located at the back of the ship.

Category 6 Waterpark Perhaps the biggest draw to Thrill Island is the massive (17,000 square feet) Category 6 waterpark that takes up almost the entire starboard side of the area. That name isn’t just a clever play on the hurricane scale, but it also ties in with the staggering six different waterslides that are available to ride.

water park on cruise ship

Storm Surge & Hurricane Hunter: These two slides are raft-based rides designed for families to be able to enjoy together. So parents and the kids can all ride as one group as the slide takes them up and out over the ship on a see-through wall that should be as thrilling as it is fun.

Pressure Drop: If you’re a fan of “drop” slides, this is your ride. Pressure Drop is the “first open freefall slides at sea” according to Royal Caribbean. You push yourself over the edge to a staggering 66-degree incline that’s fast and thrilling.

Storm Chasers: These slides are two “dueling” mat-racing slides where you can race friends to see who is the fastest. And at more than 430-feet long, this isn’t some waterslide that’s been pared down to fit on a cruise ship. Both slides loop back and forth around the waterpark.

Frightening Bolt: For those that want the biggest thrill, it comes in the form of the Frightening Bolt. Here, you step in and the floor falls out from under you, “dropping” you 46 feet before the slide catches you. And did we mention there is a clear portion of the tube so that you can see exactly how quickly you are falling as you ride?

Lost Dunes Mini-golf has become a fixture on cruise ships, but we’ll be honest — most courses are pretty pedestrian. Royal Caribbean says Lost Dunes is mini-golf “on steroids.” The area is heavily themed with the “Thrill Island” idea, complete with wrecked ship, crashed planes and more.

water park on cruise ship

Adrenaline Peak Royal Caribbean is famous for rock climbing walls on ships, and this iteration is dubbed Adrenaline Peak. There are five different lanes for climbing and it will also not just be a blank wall with some handholds. Tree vines and other additions will be included to fit with the vibe.

water park on cruise ship

Sport Court A sport court is a must on a cruise ship, and Icon of the Seas’ court takes a prominent spot, raised up from the deck below and providing wide open ocean views.

Crown’s Edge A completely new feature aboard Icon, you can think of Crown’s Edge as a ropes course that’s taken to a whole other level. The experience takes place on the massive Royal Caribbean logo on the side of the ship — and 150 feet over the ocean. You strap into a harness and make your way over obstacles. And at the end, the floor drops, sending you riding out over the ocean.

water park on cruise ship

Base Camp Instead of having to leave the fun to get a bite to eat, Thrill Island includes Base Camp — a family-friendly spot where you can grab burgers, sandwiches, and sides. No word on the exact menu as of the time of this article, but Royal Caribbean has said it is “meant to be both complementary and for-pay” food and beverage spot.

water park on cruise ship

Desserted Fitting with the island theme, cleverly-named Deserted is a milkshake bar. Kids can get a milkshake, while parents can get one of their own with an adult beverage mixed in.

Is There a Charge for Thrill Island/Category 6 on the Ship?

While things can always change, unlike the waterpark on CocoCay (Thrill Waterpark ), Category 6 and Thrill Island are said to be free aboard Icon of the Seas.

We sat in on an information session about Icon of the Seas when Chief Product Innovation Officer Jay Schneider was asked about why the waterpark would have six slides.

He answered that it was based on studies of how to best ensure there were enough rides to minimize lines based on the expected numbers in the waterpark.

“One of the ways to do that is to charge for it, and then suddenly, automatically shrink capacity. We didn’t want to do that, so we just built a bigger waterpark,” Schneider said.

Are There Height/Weight Limits for the Rides?

As of now, there’s no word on requirements to ride the waterslides in Category 6. However, you can expect that there will be some.

For example, the Flowrider on other ships has a 52″ minimum to ride. And waterslides on other Royal Caribbean ships see minimums of 48″ tall.

The waterslides on CocoCay don’t have age limits but have max weights of 300 pounds and typically have a 48″ minimum to ride. The raft rides of CocoCay have a 48″ minimum as well, unless with an adult and wearing a life vest. Then the minimum is 42″ tall.

It’s likely that many rides will see similar marks.

Does This Mean There Aren’t Places to Just Relax on Icon of the Seas?

Icon of the Seas — and Thrill Island in particular — definitely look to provide a lot to do. But if you’re the sort of person that just wants to relax on the pool deck, then that’s definitely available. There are multiple pools, including one that spans the back of the ship and another with a swim-up bar. Places to lounge are just about everywhere on the top deck, as well as spots like Central Park that are open to the air thanks to the split design of the ship.

This ship is meant to provide everything to everyone, whether they want to relax, or get a shot of adrenaline at Thrill Island.

Where Can I See More about Thrill Island?

Royal Caribbean released the following video outlining what you can expect at Thrill Island. It covers all the ins and outs of what’s included.

Making a Splash: Royal Caribbean’s Category 6 Waterpark

Last Updated on March 28, 2024

Royal Caribbean is making waves with its latest cruise ship attraction, the Category 6 Waterpark. Sure, many cruise ships have had a water slide or two for the past two decades, but for Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas and the upcoming Star of the Seas , they introduced a full-on water park. It provides an adventure-packed haven for thrill-seekers and families alike.

Category 6 Waterpark is located in Thrill Island

Category 6 Waterpark is located in the Thrill Island neighborhood on Deck 16 of the ship. Nearby are the Flowrider, Adrenaline Peak climbing wall, and Crown’s Edge attraction. It’s a great place to get your thrills on a sea day.

icon of the seas category 6 waterpark

The name “Category 6” is a playful nod to the intensity of hurricanes, and the waterpark lives up to this with six record-breaking slides that promise to deliver a rush of adrenaline. Split between two different slide towers, this area offers a variety of fun family slides.

That being said, it’s not a “true” waterpark. There are no lazy rivers, pools, or splash park in this specific area, and it doesn’t even have a dedicated entrance. Still, it has more water slides than any other cruise ship. With a footprint of 17,010 square feet, it’s easily one of the largest water areas at sea.

What slides are in Category 6 Waterpark?

On a record-breaking ship, Royal Caribbean had to put record-breaking slides.

category 6 waterpark slide sign

Frightening Bolt – the tallest drop slide at sea

Frightening Bolt is the most intense of the bunch and will intimidate even the bravest people. You get in the slide, and the floor drops from under you, sending you 46 feet down and through a full 360-degree loop.

category 6 waterpark frightening bolt tube

Storm Chasers- first duo-mat racing slides at sea

Sliding down a water slide face-first on a waterslide just feels different. It’s much more exhilarating, and you feel the water splash your face as you speed down the inclines. Storm Chasers is a dueling mat slide so you can challenge your friend or family member to see who’s fastest.

category 6 waterpark storm chasers entrance

Hurricane Hunter – first family raft slide at sea

Hurricane Hunter is a family raft slide that can seat four people per tube. That’s right; Royal Caribbean managed to pack a large-format waterslide on a cruise ship (technically two if you read below). Hurricane Hunter is a mostly enclosed tube and will send your family through 425 feet of twists and turns.

family slide

Storm Surge – first suspended family slide raft

The second family rate slide, Storm Surge, has an open slingshot element. Towards the end of the ride, the slide shoots up an open lotus leaf, giving guests an amazing ocean view while experiencing near-zero gravity.

Category 6 waterpark storm surge

Pressure Drop – first open freefall slide at sea

Sometimes you don’t need anything fancy to make a slide exhilarating. Pressure Drop is a straight 108-foot drop, but what sets it apart is that it’s an open slide that has a 66-degree incline. Guests will have to push themselves into a near-vertical drop with an open tube.

How much does Category 6 Waterpark cost?

Category 6 Waterpark is included in your cruise fare and has no additional cost. Guests can enjoy the slides as much as they want while on board.

icon of the seas flowrider and category 6 waterpark

What are the restrictions for the slides in Category 6 Waterpark?

Guests are not allowed to wear jewelry, watches, GoPros, cameras, swim vests, or shoes on the slides.

At a minimum, guests must be at least 48 inches tall to ride the slides, although each one has its own requirements (for those without children, that’s typically around eight years old).

royal caribbean category 6 slide tower.

Is Category 6 Waterpark crowded?

The level of crowds will depend on the specific sailing. For lighter crowds, try visiting the park on port days when most guests are off the ship or on embarkation day.

One thing that helps with the crowds is that Category 6 Waterpark is just the water slides; there are no pools or splash pads in the waterpark. That means people are less likely to stay on the slides all day. If they want to swim, they’ll have to go to one of the many other pools around the ship. Also, younger children will spend more time in SplashAway Bay in the Seaside Neighborhood, which helps with the crowds.

Which ships have the Category 6 Waterpark?

The waterpark can be found on the following Royal Caribbean ships:

  • Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas
  • Royal Caribbean Star of the Seas

On the World’s Largest Cruise Ship, Thrills and Space to Chill

Our reporter joined thousands of passengers on the inaugural sailing of Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. Yes, the water rides were wild. But the most surprising thing she found? Some actual peace and quiet.

One man got down on his knees and kissed the rug emblazoned with the ship’s logo. Another lifted his wife and swung her around, ecstatic to be among the roughly 5,000 passengers to embark on the inaugural sailing of the world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas.

For months, the 250,800-ton ship, which can carry nearly 8,000 people, has been making headlines — including some that have criticized its size and potential to damage the environment . But the passengers who plunked down $1,800 to $100,000 and boarded the ship at Port Miami in Florida on Jan. 27, said nothing could have prepared them for the vessel’s sheer scale.

“It’s stunning,” said Christina Carvalho, a 43-year-old accountant from Oakland, Calif., as she stood on the ship’s Royal Promenade, gaping up at “The Pearl,” a gigantic kinetic art installation. “It feels even bigger than I expected.”

While Royal Caribbean has packed the ship with amenities to craft “the ultimate family vacation,” the company’s design team has tried to defy negative stereotypes like crowded decks and long lines. Instead of steel walls, the interior is open and airy, with floor-to-ceiling windows to bring passengers closer to the water and make the central thoroughfare feel less like a shopping mall.

“Over the years our customers told us that despite being on the ocean, they did not feel connected to it, so with Icon we wanted to bring water everywhere,” said Jennifer Goswami, the director of product development at Royal Caribbean International.

I was on board the Icon of the Seas for five days of its seven-night inaugural sailing to the eastern Caribbean. Here are some of my takeaways:

Passengers board a ship, taking photos with their cellphones.

Embarkation

Embarkation starts through Royal Caribbean’s app. After some glitches, it took me 10 minutes to scan identification documents, fill out a health form and pick a time slot for boarding.

On the day of the sailing, I headed to Port Miami expecting chaos, but as I got out of the taxi, I was greeted by a porter who took my bag and ushered me to the terminal. I scanned my app, showed my passport and went through security in less than 10 minutes. I lingered, waiting to see if others had as smooth an experience as I did, but there was just a steady flow of passengers ascending the gangway.

The ship has the feel of a city, with eight distinct “neighborhoods.” My favorite, Central Park, was filled with more than 33,000 plants; it was the perfect place to stroll or read on a bench. The Royal Promenade, with karaoke and a piano bar, could get crowded and noisy at peak times.

The seven swimming pools are designed for different vibes and demographics: The Hideaway is an adults-only infinity pool, with D.J. sets and cocktails; another adult pool has an adjacent children’s splash pool. Empty lounge chairs were plentiful for sunbathers across the ship.

On our first sea day, I was so surprised by the relative absence of crowds that I walked the ship trying to find them. But with so many venues, including 40 restaurants, bars and entertainment spaces, passengers were constantly moving around.

Seeking a quiet space one afternoon, I found the Aquadome , a tranquil lounging area with wraparound windows. Fellow passengers napped there.

Entertainment and activities

From a sunrise surf simulator lesson to late-night dancing in the nightclub, the ship seems to offer something for everyone, most of it free. The water park with six slides was a big draw. One ride, the Crown’s Edge, is not complimentary: Starting at $49, it tosses you (in a harness) above the sea, leaving you dangling.

There is a fitness center, jogging track, a basketball and soccer court, a putt-putt course, pickleball, rock climbing and dancing. A wellness center and spa offers treatments for an additional cost. All can be reserved on the app; for popular attractions like the Crown’s Edge it’s helpful to book ahead because places fill up fast.

For nightly entertainment, “Aqua Action” was a standout, with aquatic entertainers performing under a 55-foot waterfall, as was the comedy club.

water park on cruise ship

Not surprisingly, some passengers felt overprogrammed. “There’s almost too much to do,” said Nancy Carter, 54, a nurse from Brighton, England. “It’s hard to plan your day and even when you are busy doing something, you feel like you are missing out on something else.”

At the Surfside neighborhood, there are pools and restaurants for both adults and children so that families can spend time together. For parents wanting alone time, the Adventure Ocean child-care facility has play areas and programs for ages 6 months to 12 years that is included in the fare.

There’s a social center for teenagers, too, with games and music. “It’s a great place to meet new people and make friends,” said Madison Foxx, 14, from Morrisville, N.C. Her mother, Ashley, a 38-year-old federal prosecutor, said the ship kept her two children entertained and allowed her both alone time and quality family time.

“I can relax and the kids are happy and busy all day," she said. “Then we have many special moments together.”

One of the biggest surprises was the array of dining choices.

The Windjammer Cafe and the main dining room were the busiest all-inclusive options. My daily go-to was the Aquadome food hall, with crepes made-to-order and a Greek food stand. Another favorite of mine was Pier 7, a restaurant in Surfside that served raw-tuna Buddha bowls, mango-lime shrimp tostadas and other dishes.

water park on cruise ship

Meals at specialty restaurants, such as Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen and Hooked Seafood, come at an additional cost, or are included in some food and beverages packages that range from $9.99 to $115 per day. Reservations are recommended.

The Empire Supper Club offers an eight-course meal paired with cocktails. At $200, the tasting menu included Wagyu rib-eye, rabbit and sea bass topped with parsnip and red beets.

Cabin prices — which recently increased, because of high demand — range from $2,699 per person for an interior cabin to over $100,000 for a three-story townhouse with an indoor slide and backyard. Some family accommodations have connecting rooms and large terraces.

Though only 204 square feet, my ocean balcony room did not feel cramped thanks to minimalist design and the views.

Environment

Royal Caribbean says it set a new standard for sustainability with this ship, installing advanced water-treatment and waste systems, among other features. But some environmental groups say that building a vessel this size is not compatible with the cruise industry’s long-term sustainability goals.

On board, I saw staff sorting through the trash to take out misplaced items to recycle, and single-use plastic appeared to be minimal; passengers were given reusable cups at drinking stations.

That the water slides remained on, even after they were closed to passengers, caught me by surprise. It seemed like an unnecessary waste of energy. (Royal Caribbean did not respond to a request for comment.)

Passengers I spoke to did not seem too concerned about the ship’s potential to harm the environment, with some arguing that land and air travel are not climate-friendly either.

Our seven-night itinerary started with two days at sea. The first stop was on Day 4 at Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts and Nevis. Excursions ranged from a hike up Mount Liamuiga to a food-and-rum tour, with prices from $39 to $249. I chose a sailing and snorkeling excursion ($155) and enjoyed the secluded bay, but the beach was crowded and touristy.

Video player loading

An anticipated excursion for Ms. Foxx, the federal prosecutor, and others was Coco Cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. When I asked about her visit — I called later, having to disembark before the excursion — Ms. Foxx said her children loved the slides and snorkeling.

And would she sail on the Icon of the Seas again?

“Yes, but I might wait a bit,” she replied. “I want everyone to get a chance to try it out.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the number of plants in the Central Park “neighborhood” of Icon of the Seas. It has more than 33,000 plants, not 20,000 plant species.

10 Best Cruise Ship Water Parks, Ranked

AquaDunk; Courtesy of Disney

Sep 14, 2018

See recent posts by Jeff Bogle

They are the dominate feature, that colorful first thing your kids notice as your family car, taxi or shuttle bus gets closer and closer to port. It’s the cruise ship’s water park! And let’s be honest—aside from the endless soft-serve ice cream—the water park is the next best thing on a family cruise. Here, we rank our favorite cruise ship water parks.

AquaDuck on Disney Cruise Line

1. AquaDuck – Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy

The AquaDuck spans over 750 feet of tubes that snake up, down and actually out over the side of the ships while providing incredible views of the sea—for those brave enough to look, that is! We love the AquaDuck because it’s a two-person raft ride that actually goes uphill like a roller coaster (thanks to water jet propulsion) before ending in a lazy river. That’s a combination no other cruise ship water park can match. At night, there are multicolored lights to make the AquaDuck even more spectacular.

The Perfect Storm on Royal Caribbean

2. The Perfect Storm – Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas

When you combine the three deck-high thrills of The Perfect Storm’s three waterslides and the massive kids’ wet and wild zone Splashaway Bay nearby, Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas on Royal Caribbean rank high for all-around watery fun at sea. Pro tip: if you want to slide down the yellow one, the line is much shorter!

Dr. Deuss Waterworks on Carnival Cruise Line

3. Dr. Seuss Waterworks – Carnival Horizon

A compact zone of splish-splash fun for the whole family sits high atop the Carnival Horizon . Dr. Seuss Waterworks is dominated by the colorful red and white Cat in the Hat slide and the twisting Thing 1 and 2 waterslide, appropriately colored blue like their whacky hair. The park also includes a youthful splash area with smaller slides and a big bucket regularly pouring hundreds of gallons of water down onto happy kids.

AquaDunk on Disney Cruise Line

4. AquaDunk – Disney Magic

Gulp! This thrill ride takes cruisers out over the edge of the ship on Disney Magic on a 20-foot curve after the floor falls away like a trap door and you begin your nearly 40-foot ascension to the top deck. A memorable splash finale occurs after you plummet 212 feet through a translucent tube.

Ocean Loops on Norwegian Cruise Line

5. Ocean Loops – Norwegian Bliss and Joy

Not to be outdone in the ‘hanging off the edge of the ship’ department, Norwegian’s Ocean Loops is a multistory, double-loop waterslide that extends 11 feet off the ship and nearly 160 feet above the ocean! If that’s too much for you, the Bliss and Joy also have the Aqua Racer, a multi-story tandem inner tube slide that is contained fully within the width of the ship!

Forest Aquaventure Park on MSC Cruises

6. Forest Aquaventure Park – MSC Seaside and Seaview

MSC Cruises offers one of the more interactive water attractions at sea and has five waterslides in total, including two racing slides with clear loops extending over the edge of the ship, high above the ocean below. There’s also a 367-foot waterslide with lights and music to make the ride down even more entertaining!

Related: 4 Cruise Lines That Let Kids Sail Free

Carnival Vista Waterworks

7. Waterworks – Carnival Vista

Side by side waterslides, hundreds of feet above the top deck of the Vista , are fast and fun. The Kaleidoslide is a visual delight with spirals of rainbow colors in the orange tube to illuminate the way down.

Related: 10 Over-The-Top Cruise Ship Experiences for Families

Free Fall on Norwegian Cruise Line

8. Free Fall – Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Getaway

The Norwegian Escape and Getaway also have the tandem fun of the Aqua Racer and the family fun of Aqua Park, but add in the daredevil Free Fall. This waterslide is the fastest at sea, at 4G speeds you wish your phone could achieve while cruising!

Epic Plunge on Norwegian Cruise Line

9. Epic Plunge – Norwegian Epic

Located four stories above the pool decks at the top of the ship, The Epic Plunge takes waterslide lovers on a 200-foot journey with or without an inner tube, before swirling you around.

Caribbean Princess Splash Pad; Courtesy of Family Vacation Critic

10. Reef Family Splash Zone – Caribbean Princess

For the younger set, Caribbean Princess offers a splash pad area for toddlers and little kids. Winnie the Whale greets young kids with a big grin and small toddler slide inside her mouth. There are spray guns and fountains and bucket drops all conveniently located next to the outdoor lawn game area, where you can enjoy giant games as a family.

Royal Caribbean has unveiled details of the world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas .

With the largest water park at sea and the first suspended infinity pool on a cruise ship, the first Icon Class vessel will set sail in January 2024.

It will also be home to a 16-metre-high waterfall, a rock-climbing wall, the company's first swim-up bar and its very own "Central Park" neighbourhood, inspired by New York City's famed urban park.

Sailing on seven-night journeys around the Caribbean from its port city of Miami, the megaship will open for bookings next Tuesday.

At 250,800 tonnes, the new ship is more than five per cent larger in volume than Royal Caribbean ’s Oasis class vessels, making it the largest cruise ship in the world. Spanning more than 365 metres in length, the vessel clocks in three metres longer than the Wonder of the Seas , the current largest ship in the world.

With 2,805 staterooms, the ship's focus is family-style holidays and it has a capacity for 7,800 passengers and 2,350 crew members.

Accommodation includes an array of family staterooms, suites and the first Ultimate Family townhouse. Spanning three levels, this spacious retreat includes a slide, cinema, karaoke, huge balcony and a private entrance to the ship's Surfside family neighbourhood.

“With each new ship, we raise the bar in the travel industry while enhancing what our guests know and love,” said Jason Liberty, president and chief executive at Royal Caribbean Group.

“From the moment they step on board, every experience is specifically designed to give them the best vacation anywhere on land and at sea. With Icon of the Seas, we’ve taken this to a new level and made the ultimate family vacation.”

Six water slides and an over-the-edge rope course

Spread across eight different neighbourhoods, each of which has themed entertainment, restaurants, bars and experiences, there are five new destinations on board, plus three zones that passengers will be familiar with from other Royal Caribbean ships.

Thrill Island is where passengers will find the largest water park at sea, with six water slides including Pressure Drop, the industry’s first open free-fall slide and the 14-metre-high Frightening Bolt, which the company claims is the tallest slide on the high seas. Travellers can also tackle Crown’s Edge, part skywalk, part rope course and part thrill ride, travellers dangle on a rope 45 metres above the waves.

On the opposite end of the scale, Chill Island is where four of the ship's seven pools are found, and it's the place to unwind and catch some rays. Here, there's the cruise line's first swim-up bar, plus an adults-only pool and Cove Pool which has comfy dome daybeds and uninterrupted ocean views.

Open-air Central Park and an Instagram-friendly beach club

Central Park will be filled with thousands of live plants, walkways and more. Photo: Royal Caribbean International

Central Park, an open-air neighbourhood filled with live plants, is also back on the world's largest cruise ship and, perhaps unsurprisingly, is bigger than ever.

Families will be able to make a beeline to Surfside where Splashaway Bay and Baby Bay await alongside a carousel, arcade and children's clubs. The Hideaway neighbourhood will be home to an Instagram-perfect beach club and the first suspended infinity pool at sea, hovering eight stories high.

On top of the world’s largest cruise ship is AquaDome — which by day will have its own waterfall and wraparound ocean views; by night, it will transform into the ship’s social hub with restaurants, bars and aqua shows where athletes and artists will perform in transforming pools, robotic arms and cutting-edge technology.

The ship is set to be unveiled in the UK later next year and start sailings from the US in 2024. Icon of the Seas will offer itineraries inclusive of a stop at Royal Caribbean’s private-island retreat, Perfect Day at CocoCay and the soon-to-open adults-only island Hideaway Beach. Rates have still to be announced. It is set to be larger than the cruise line's Utopia of the Seas , also set to arrive in 2024, though it is an Oasis-class ship.

The New 'Icon of the Seas' Will Have a 55-foot Waterfall, the Largest Waterpark at Sea, and Its Own 'Central Park'

Royal Caribbean International just announced its new 'Icon' class of ship — with some of the most over-the-top features in cruising history.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

water park on cruise ship

When it arrives next year, the new Icon of the Seas ship will be one of the most over-the-top in history, not to mention one of the biggest in the world. Which stands to reason: The amenity-packed Royal Caribbean International ship, slated to arrive in late 2023, is designed to be the end all, be all of family fun, the brand announced Thursday morning. “We set out to create, frankly, the best family vacation in the world,” said Royal Caribbean International chief product innovation officer Jay Schneider, in an interview with Travel + Leisure . “More than anything we've ever done before, this really is designed to compete with any vacation on the planet.”

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean

Years in the making, Icon of the Seas will be the first in a series of ships known as the Icon Class. Each promises to have a head-spinning array of features; on Icon, that’ll include an enormous waterpark, seven swimming pools, a private suites-only retreat, an improved “Central Park” filled with live plants, a cocktail bar dedicated to frozen drinks, a swim-up cocktail venue (a first for the line), dozens of restaurants, a rock-climbing wall, and even a 55-foot indoor waterfall.

"It’s been more than five years since we started to design  Icon  with the dream to create the best family vacation in the world," said Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, in an email to T+L. "Everything you could want from a getaway is all in one place, and after the past few years, an experience like this is more than what adventurers are looking for — it’s what they could’ve hardly imagined."

The Icon will accommodate thousands of guests, with 2,805 staterooms across 28 different room categories, including what Royal Caribbean International, or RCI, calls “the three-story Ultimate Family Townhouse, complete with its own white-picket fence and mailbox.” Not that this mega-ship is all about the numbers, Schneider said.

“I would say the best thing about the ship is the connection we made to the water, the views we've created through the heart of the ship,” he explained. The new Icon heralds a brand-new class of ship for RCI, which consistently ranks among the World’s Best mega-ship lines , according to T+L readers. “We went through a creative design process that really built on 50 years of innovation,” said Schneider. “It’s really built on every class of ship that has come before. I get a lot of questions of, ‘Can I compare this to the last new class of ship or another class of ship?’ And the answer is, ‘No.’”

Despite the evolution in design, Icon will, like other RCI ships, be arranged around “neighborhoods” such as AquaDome, Chill Island, Surfside, and The Hideaway, each of which promise a different experience and vibe for guests. One particularly noteworthy area will be Thrill Island, Schneider told T+L. “It has the world's largest water park at sea — you could argue the only water park at sea — with six mind-blowing water slides,” Schneider said. “And on the other side, you've got Crown’s Edge, where, for the first time ever, you’ll be able to do a mini little course, walk around the world's largest crown and anchor,” RCI’s famed insignia, “which is perched on the side of the ship. You’ll be tethered, then fly around the crown and anchor, while 154 feet above the ocean, before you safely return back to the ship.”

Notably, this mega-ship will be the first vessel in the brand’s fleet powered by liquid natural gas, a comparatively cleaner-burning alternative to what’s typically used in the cruise industry. The ship will also have a fuel cell that allows for some operations to run off battery power, reducing in-port emissions in certain destinations. Smart heating and cooling systems aboard the Icon, which switch on and off when guests board and disembark, will also help with energy efficiency, Schneider said.  When it starts sailing, Icon of the Seas will offer seven-night round trips from Miami that include a stop at Royal Caribbean’s private-island retreat, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Rates haven’t yet been announced.

Splashing around in a water park is one of the best ways to keep kids of all ages entertained during your cruise holiday, particularly on sea days. Cruise ship water parks are incredibly popular, so much so that almost every new family-focused cruise ship has one. With features such as swimming pools, splash areas, water slides, fountains and spray jets, there’s so much to keep kids of all ages busy.

Some family cruise lines are better for water parks than others, while some might not even have one at all. So, if a great water park is a must, you’ll need to consider exactly what’s on board each ship.

Some waterparks focus on fast thrill slides – perfect for teens. Whilst others have amazing splash areas – ideal for toddlers. Splash zones are great because children in swimming nappies aren’t allowed in any pool or hot tub on any cruise ship for hygiene reasons. So, a toddler splash zone is an ideal way for little ones to cool off on a hot day. Read on to find out more about the best cruise ship water parks and slides.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Aqua Park & Kids Aqua Park

Which ships to choose: Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Breakaway , Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Epic , Norwegian Escape , Norwegian Getaway  and Norwegian Joy .

Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway

On Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway Class ships, you’ll find no fewer than five multi-storey waterslides. The Free Fall slide is the fastest and one of the most exhilarating slides at sea. Stand inside the capsule and wait until the floor drops away leaving you hurtling downwards at the speed of four Gs.

Norwegian Escape - Free Fall slide

Then there’s The Whip, two side-by-side twisting racing slides. For younger guests or those who prefer a more relaxing ride, the family fun slide is ideal.

At the end of the slide is a huge bowl which you’ll swirl round and round before exiting at the bottom.

Norwegian Epic - Epic Plunge

MSC Meraviglia - Polar Aquapark

MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview

Almost-identical twin ships MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview take cruise ship slides to the next level with the Slideboard. The Slideboard is more than just a water slide, it’s also an interactive game, dropping two decks, this duo of slides twists and turns with flashing lights and music.

Riders sit on ‘slideboards’, which have buttons on them to press in time to the flashing lights to score points. A leader board at the exit keeps track of each rider’s score. As if that wasn’t enough, there are a further two fast racing slides with clear sections over the side of the ship and an open spiral slide.

MSC Seaside

Younger cruisers will love the Forest Aquaventure Park. Located inside the ship’s funnel surround it has a good amount of shade from the sun and features a shallow pool, fountains, spray nozzles, mini slides and a giant water bucket.

MSC Preziosa

MSC Preziosa boasts the Vertigo slide, a 120-metre-long tube slide which includes a transparent section which goes over the side of the ship. This is a fast one, with guests travelling at over 6 metres per second. You’ll also find a great kids waterpark on the deck below, with tipping buckets, climbing areas and small slides for little ones.

MSC Preziosa - Waterpark

Minimum height and weight requirements for MSC Cruises:

Royal Caribbean’s slides, H2O Zone and Splashaway Bay

Which ships to choose: Liberty of the Seas , Adventure of the Seas , Harmony of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas , Independence of the Seas , Mariner of the Seas , Navigator of the Seas .

Whilst Royal Caribbean isn’t known for its water slides, they still feature on several ships, and the splash areas are well-designed and loved by younger cruisers.

RCI Liberty

Perfect Storm

The Perfect Storm is a group of three water slides which are found on-board Liberty of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas, although it’s not the same three slides on each ship.

RCI Perfect Storm

Two of the three slides are the Cyclone and Typhoon – twisting racer slides. The third slide varies by ship (except Adventure of the Seas which doesn’t have the third slide). On Harmony of the Seas it’s the Supercell which has a circular bowl at the bottom which riders swirl around in before sliding down one final length into the plunge pool. On Liberty of the Seas, the third slide is the Tidal Wave – a boomerang-style slide which uses inflatable rafts.

On Allure of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas you’ll find the H20 Zone which is perfect for babies and toddlers. Here you’ll find various pools, water cannons and fountains for splashing around.

H20 WaterPark

Splashaway Bay

Adventure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Majesty of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas have Splashaway Bay, which has all the features of the H2O zone, plus a few kids’ water slides and a giant tipping bucket.

RCI Harmony Splash-away Bay

Other activities

Although it’s not a water slide, the Ultimate Abyss on-board Harmony of the Seas deserves a mention. This is a huge slide which zooms riders down ten decks from the back of the ship. Many Royal Caribbean ships also feature the FlowRider surfing simulator which is very popular with teenagers.

RCI Abyss

Minimum height and weight requirements for Royal Caribbean slides:

  • Tidal Wave: 132cm and 45kg

Carnival Cruises are synonymous with fun, and almost every ship in the Carnival fleet features the WaterWorks water park. Although the exact configuration varies by ship, you generally expect at least one big slide and a splash area.

Carnival Waterworks

The Twister Waterslide is one of the fastest you’ll find at sea, or indeed on land. Speedway Splash, meanwhile, is a racing slide featuring awesome lighting effects. Then there’s the DrainPipe, which swirls riders round in circles at the end. There’s no better way to cool off on a hot day than with the PowerDrencher – a huge bucket of water which tips down from above.

So there you have our guide to the best cruise ship slides and water parks!

If your family would love to spend time in a water park on-board a cruise ship, the cruise lines to look out for will be Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line .

Aside from choosing a great ship, it’s also important to think carefully about your itinerary and the time of year that you’re cruising. Whilst it is possible to ride the slides in the Mediterranean in January, it’s going to be pretty cold so your kids aren’t likely to have more than a couple of goes. The slides are also likely to be closed for much of the day if the weather is anything less than warm. So plan carefully and you’re sure to have a holiday to remember.

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is one of the most popular waterparks in all of Cozumel, offering a fun-filled day for the entire family.

Playa Mia has 6 different admission packages for purchase, so you can find the package that best fits your budget and plans.

For example, the highest tier package includes all-you-can-eat, all-you-can-drink, round-trip transportation, and free access to almost all amenities and activities.

The hours of operation are Monday-Saturday, 9AM to 6PM, but it’s important to note the kitchen and bars close at 5PM when most cruise ship passengers are departing.

Regardless of your package, there are more than 20 different water attractions to do and enjoy at Playa Mia including Buccaneer’s Bay, Oasis Island, the Floating Park, and the 200-foot long Twin Twister waterslides, as well as kayaking and paddle boats.

Not to mention their comfortable lounge chairs and cabanas, where you can simply relax or take a dip in the crystal-clear waters to explore the thriving underwater life.

An entire underwater city is right off the main beach at Playa Mia Grand Beach Park . Beautiful tropical fish swimming around, and unique miniature Mayan ruins sit just below the ocean surface.

And if none of the free activities pique your interest, there are other activities available for purchase, like:

  • Beachfront Massage
  • Parasailing
  • Jet Ski Rentals
  • Banana Boat Rides
  • Hobie Cats (small sailing catamarans)

2. Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club

  • HOURS : Daily from 9AM–5PM
  • ACTIVITIES : Snorkeling, Floating Water Park, Kayaking, Pool Bars, Additional Activities For Purchase

Located towards the southern end of the island near Playa Palancar and El Cielo , Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club is another popular all-inclusive beach park in Cozumel that’s pretty affordable.

This well-known beach club is excellent for all ages and has many activities for the entire family.

One of the most popular Cozumel water sports at Mr. Sanchos is the thrilling Cozumel inflatable water park.

This is like a floating obstacle course, full of slides, balance beams, water trampolines, and an iceberg climbing tower. Ensure you accompany any children, as it can get a little rowdy and sometimes crowded!

Plus, with the all-inclusive package , you can also enjoy unlimited food and alcoholic beverages while lounging at the beach, pool, or swim-up bars.

Mr Sanchos Cozumel also has a large variety of additional activities available for purchase, including:

  • Horseback Riding
  • ATV Excursions

3. Paradise Beach

  • HOURS : Mon-Sat from 8AM–6PM, Sun from 10AM–6PM
  • ACTIVITIES : Snorkeling, Floating Water Park, Swim Up Pool Bar, Kayaking, Paddle Boards, Additional Activities For Purchase

Paradise Beach Club is another all-inclusive, open-bar Cozumel water park with excellent food, great swimming, and other exhilarating activities.

Paradise Beach Club is easy to access from the cruise port or any other location in Cozumel and should be about a 20-minute taxi ride from most places in the city center of San Miguel de Cozumel .

Paradise has many exciting activities, like the infamous floating aquatic park, high-quality food and dining options, and a large swimming pool with a swim-up bar.

What’s great about Paradise Beach is that they don’t have a buffet but rather a full menu that they’ll serve you at the restaurant or at your lounge chair.

And in addition to the usual activities that are included with most packages, you can check out some of these activities at an extra cost:

  • Henna Tattoos

4. Tortugas Beach Club

  • HOURS : Daily from 9AM–7PM
  • ACTIVITIES : Snorkeling, Floating Water Park, Kayaking, Additional Activities For Purchase
  • SUITED FOR: Ages 12+

Tortugas Beach Club is a simple and laid-back beach club experience offering a full-service restaurant, bar, and floating water park.

Reservations are not required, but you can purchase a basic package to enjoy the facilities and water park, or an all-inclusive package with unlimited food and drinks included.

I’ve eaten here before and the food was actually pretty good–it’s standard Mexican fare and you can even order frozen cocktails in the tall plastic yards like at Señor Frog’s.

And while Tortugas Beach Club doesn’t have the sandiest beach, the water is clear turquoise, calm, and teeming with marine life.

Plus, Tortugas is basically a water sports hub in Cozumel with the floating water park, as well as water bikes, paddle boards, and jet skis–which makes it better suited for adults and older kids.

Additionally, they have several other fun Cozumel snorkeling tours and water sports available for purchase, including:

  • Extreme Snorkel Tours
  • Discover Scuba Diving

5. San Francisco Beach Club

  • ACTIVITIES : Snorkeling, Swim Up Pool Bar, Additional Activities Available For Purchase

Some people claim San Francisco Beach Club is the oldest beach club in all of Cozumel. While this isn’t proven, it does have historical roots and has been around for a long time.

It’s struggling to compete with the bigger beach clubs, as Playa San Francisco has fewer activities and packages available.

However, it’s still a fun beach club where you’ll find more locals than tourists. They have lounge chairs lining the beach, decent snorkeling, a floating water park, and some other water activities like paddle boards, kayaks, and floating mats.

In addition to pool access, and dining at a well-established restaurant, you can check out some of their other activities:

  • Paddleboarding

6. Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

  • HOURS : Mon-Sat 9AM–4PM
  • ACTIVITIES : Snorkeling, Boat Lagoon Tour, Lighthouse, Kayaking, Incredible Nature Preserves
  • HOW TO BOOK: Book a guided tour here →

Located on the southern tip of Cozumel Island, Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is an ecological park and nature reserve offering natural beaches and outdoor activities.

While the Eco Beach Park Cozumel is further away from town, about a 40-minute drive, it is well worth the trip especially for nature lovers.

Within Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, you can take a boat tour through the lagoon for a chance to see crocodiles, walk along the docks through the mangroves, climb the Celarain Lighthouse for incredible views, and finish off the adventurous day by lounging on the beautiful beach.

And while it’s not a traditional water park, it’s a massive nature reserve where you can still relax at the beach, snorkel in the clear waters, or go kayaking off-shore.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park tends to be much less crowded than other all-inclusive beach clubs, mainly because it is so far away from all the other activities. But this gives it a serene, relaxing, and tranquil vibe for the entire family.

You don’t need to book a tour to visit but if you don’t have a rental car , a guided Punta Sur Eco-Park tour is definitely the easiest way to go due to its remote location.

7. Buccanos Grill & Beach Club

  • HOURS : Tues-Sun 10AM–5:45PM, 6PM–10:30PM
  • ACTIVITIES : Snorkeling, Fresh Water Pool, Lounge Chairs, Additional Activities Available For Purchase

Buccanos Grill & Beach Club is one of the most popular beach clubs for locals, possibly because it is one of the rare beach clubs open for dining in the evening.

Buccanos Grill & Beach Club is a great place for snorkeling right off the main beach, with snorkel gear rentals included in the day pass entry cost.

The service is known for being friendly and accommodating, and it is less crowded than some big-name beach clubs, like Playa Mia .

It doesn’t have an adventure floating park or water slides, so it’s better suited for adults and older kids looking for a more relaxing experience.

And its location on the north shore of Cozumel makes it especially great if you’re staying at Cozumel resorts on the northern end of the island like Hotel B Unique .

In addition to all the basics, Buccanos Beach Club has lots of activities available at an additional charge:

  • Scuba Diving

8. Del Mar Latino Beach Club

  • HOURS : Mon-Sat 8AM–5PM
  • ACTIVITIES : Snorkeling, Infinity Pool, Lounge Chairs
  • SUITED FOR: Adults Only

Del Mar Latino Beach Club is a unique, exclusive adults-only beach club. They have limited space, only allowing in about 30 people per day, so an all-inclusive day pass should be booked in advance.

The exclusivity of this beach club makes it a great place for those that want to escape the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet, away from larger groups or children.

Del Mar Latino Beach Club has direct snorkeling access, with a pretty active reef and marine life just off the beach.

If snorkeling isn’t your thing, you can easily lounge on the beach chairs and soak up the sun and tranquility.

This beach club is also located about half a mile from Puerta Maya International Cruise Pier, making walking or taking a quick taxi from your cruise terminal very easy.

Tips for Visiting Water Parks in Cozumel

Follow these tips to make the most of your day at a Cozumel Mexico water park:

  • Don’t expect the food to be spectacular: Most of these aquatic parks are not world-renowned for their food. And the places that offer an all-inclusive package with unlimited food and an open bar generally have a buffet-style lunch. While it’s enough to keep you full and energized throughout the adventure, you won’t find five-star meals waiting for you here.
  • Factor in transportation time and costs : Many of the water parks are outside of central Cozumel, which means you’ll have to take a taxi or arrange transportation ahead of time. Most taxi trips from the ferry terminal or cruise port will cost between $100 pesos (~$6 USD) and $400 pesos (~$23 USD) each way.
  • Bring biodegradable sunscreen: Cozumel is surrounded by one of the world’s most beautiful, diverse, and active reefs. Cruise ships and constant Cozumel water activities take a toll on the national reef marine park, so it’s important to preserve the wildlife and marine eco-systems. Do your part and stick to biodegradable sunscreen to reduce harm to the reef when jumping in the water.
  • Bring cash for tips and deposits : Even if you book an all-inclusive package, bring a little cash to leave for bonuses and deposits. Some places, like Playa Mia , require small cash deposits for included services, like locker rentals and beach towels.

What to Bring to a Cozumel Water Park

Here’s what I recommend bringing to a Cozumel aquatic park:

Biodegradable Sunscreen

Beach Towel

Water Shoes

Kindle Paperwhite

Water Bottle

In addition, you’ll also want to bring a change of clothes and some extra cash for tips (pesos or USD).

Water Parks in Cozumel: FAQs

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Cozumel water park excursions:

The easiest way to get from the cruise port to one of the Cozumel water parks is by taxi. A line of taxis is waiting right outside the cruise port, so you can easily hop in a cab and head to the water park.

If you’re visiting on a Cozumel day trip from Playa del Carmen or mainland Riviera Maya, you can easily take a taxi to any of these water parks. There is a dedicated taxi stand right outside of the ferry terminal.

A minimum of 3-4 hours is best for a Cozumel water park, but the more time, the better. The water parks have many drinks, snorkeling, and fun water activities. So you want to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy everything without feeling rushed.

Yes, water parks in Cozumel are safe. They are often well-staffed, with security and staff constantly walking around. While Cozumel is a safe place to visit , you’ll still want to practice basic self-awareness and avoid leaving valuables unattended.

Most Cozumel water parks are all inclusive; however, not all are. Be sure to double-check your package and aquatic park of choice because most have different packages that may include food and drinks.

Cozumel water parks typically provide day pass entry with basic amenities like beach access, outdoor pools, restrooms/showers, lockers, towels, chairs, umbrellas, snorkel gear, and free Wi-Fi.

All-inclusive packages may offer an open bar, all-you-can-eat buffet, and access to activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and a floating water park.

Additional activities like guided snorkel tours, scuba diving, jet ski rentals, parasailing, and massage packages are also available for purchase at most water parks.

Most water parks in Cozumel are crowded, especially the water parks that offer packages with cruise lines.

However, the water parks all have a lot of space and a good layout, making them comfortable and spacious regardless of the number of visitors.

Water park costs in Cozumel differ based on amenities and packages chosen. Prices range from $40 USD for a basic package to $100 USD for an all-inclusive one, which includes food, drinks, and activities.

Compared to aquatic parks in the United States, Cozumel parks are incredibly affordable.

A majority of Cozumel parks are designed for families. They have many adult activities, like snorkeling, jet skiing, and kayaking. And they also might have a floating water park for children and other family-friendly activities.

Yes, the Cozumel water temperature is warm enough to swim all year round. The water temperatures range from 78°F (26°C) in winter to 86°F (30°C) in summer.

Conclusion: Best Cozumel Water Parks Guide

Cozumel water parks are one of the top things to do in Cozumel and a really fun way to spend a day on the island.

The island is not known for top-tier public beaches, so an aquatic park is likely your best bet if you want to enjoy a day on the beach.

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is my top recommendation with a loaded all-you-can-eat buffet, strong drinks, and lots of activities ranging from kayaking to snorkeling to bouncing around on the floating water park.

And while Cozumel water parks are different than Playa del Carmen water parks , they all have beach access and direct snorkel access, as well as equipment.

So, you can jump in the water and enjoy the crystal-clear water, followed by a relaxing nap on one of the beach club lounge chairs.

Remember that each water park has its own appeal. Whichever you choose, you’re sure to have an exciting aquatic adventure in Cozumel!

This boat is in very good running condition. My original intention was to refit all systems and have accumulated all the major parts to do so. Check below to see all items included that will need to be installed. I have had the boat since 2006 (believe I'm the 4th owner) and have taken it on several trips over the years without problem. Had to cancel two trips this year due to family obligations. Reason for selling is my current situation is not conducive to keeping the boat. Overall length is 29'10" including the swim platform with a beam of 10'8". It has a hardtop and large cockpit, yet the cabin is still very spacious for a 28 footer. Original motor was a Marine Power 305, but previous owner repowered with a 350 block in 1992. Hours are unknown due to the hour-meter being faulty and disconnected when I purchased the vessel. I knew the previous owner and felt confident with the boat/engine condition. I have put roughly 60 hours on the engine. Shaft, cutlass bearing, and seal were replaced in 2008. The seal is PSS dripless. Propeller is a Nibral 16x18 new this year. Also have a spare bronze prop. Electronics - Standard Horizon CP300 Chartplotter w/ current chart card, FF550 Fishfinder & ST526 Transducer, Standard Horizon GX 3000 VHF New Equipment NOT installed: Plumbing - Raritan Sea-Era electric head (Mod 160MF012), Sealand 28 gal. holding tank, 6 gal. Raritan water heater w/ heat exchanger, Todd 25 gal. fresh water tank, Jabsco SensorMax VSD Freshwater Pump (Mod 31755) Air Conditioning - Webasto FCF 12000btu w/reverse cycle heat(mounted in boat), March water pump, all fittings, hose, vents, and electrical for installation. Electrical - Sterling Power 40 Amp 3 bank charger. Sterling Power Pro-Split Alternator Splitter - 3 bank, Blue Sea 30A breaker panel for Air Cond., Blue Sea DC 100A 13 positon panel for accessories The boat is currently in the water and available for a sea trial at your convenience. However, I will be out of town July 25 - 31. Buyer must take delivery within a reasonable amount of time at boat club on Grosse Ile, MI where vessel is currently docked. All expenses for delivery/transport will be responsibility of buyer. I will pay for hoist service at it's current location on Grosse Ile if needed.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

Launched in 1971, the Catalina 27 has been a popular favourite, enjoying the kind of commercial success that’s led to one of the longest and largest production runs of its era spanning 22 years and 6,600 boats. From the outset she was designed to be affordable (some have even said cheap) for weekend excursions, club racing and coastal cruising – offshore work was always outside of the design scope. Yet despite this there has been at least one circumnavigation demonstrating that this vessel, with the right preparation and skills, can be an ocean passage maker. We’ve included this boat here more for its popularity than its inherent seaworthiness.

The Catalina 27 was conceived in a 1970 design partnership between Robert Finch, and the founder of Catalina Yachts, Frank Butler. Butler built an incredible number of 27s at his boat factory in Southern California using modern boatbuilding processes that are not too different to methods employed today. Initial production started in 1971. She had a incredibly spacious interior and she was affordably priced at a time when cruising sailboats had captured the public imagination. These factors helped the boat find immediate success, in fact in the first three years 1,500 boats popped off the production line – that’s ten per week.

Early models were only available with outboard engines, an inboard option of an Atomic 4 engine was added in 1973, which later expanded to other engine varieties in successive years. The outboard engine option was later phased out in 1989. For shallow waters, a shoal draft winged-keel version was introduced in 1979. And popular among club racers, there was a version with a taller, more efficient, high aspect ratio rig which added 24 sq.ft. of canvas.

Production spread also to Canada and the UK. Cooper Enterprises in British Columbia, at the time one of the largest Canadian boatbuilders, produced well over a thousand boats under license for the Canadian domestic market and are a common sight around BC waterways today. While across the pond in the UK, the boat was built under license from as early as 1971 under the brand name Jaguar for UK and European markets. These were produced in Essex by Eric Birch Yachts (from 1971) and Russell Marine (from 1975) with the hulls molded by Seamaster Boats.

In 1979 a young 28 year old Patrick Childress set off in his shoal draft Catalina 27, Juggernaut , on a successful 3 year single-handed circumnavigation which included a 6400-mile, 53-day passage of the Indian Ocean.

After an unprecedented 22 years of production resulting in 6,600 boats, production finally ceased in 1991. Catalina succeeded the long lasting design with an all-new water-ballasted and trailerable weekender, the Catalina 270.

Configuration

The Catalina 27 is a fin-keeler with a raked spade rudder hanging about as far aft as possible, pushed along by a masthead sloop rig that’s tall and efficient. The hull shape is shallow and beamy which is great for initial stiffness to the wind but reduces liveable volume below the waterline. Butler made up for this by drawing deep topsides and a high cabin top all while keeping the design sleek to the eye. The result gives this 27-footer class leading interior headroom and space.

Below deck can best be described as light and spacious, this boat offers so much accommodation that many are willing to forgo her flaws. The companionway and hatch is wide which poses a water ingress hazard at sea but is responsible for her spacious feel in the cabin while at anchor. There’s technically berths for six in the standard aft-galley layout – two in the forepeak and the port side settee will really only fit kids or very short adults, while the starboard settee converts to a cozy double berth, and finally there’s a starboard seagoing quarterberth. The galley with its two burner stove is located on port below the companionway while the head is located just aft of the forepeak on starboard and is comfortably sized. Opposite the head is a locker, but note, as is typical of boats this size, locker and stowage space is in short supply.

Construction

Construction was pretty light. The hull is of solid fiberglass and much thinner than typical offshore counterparts, particularly above the waterline where small impacts that would normally lead to just a scratch may result in fractures for the Catalina 27. Early boats, as a cost cutting measure, lacked proper backing plates on deck hardware, stanchions, and rails, which lead to cracked gelcoat and in some cases fiberglass delamination. This was remedied in later boats.

The feel of the helm is very light and she sails responsively, or to quote the ever humorous John Vigor in 20 Small Sailboats to Take you Anywhere, “She handles like a dinghy, which is hardy surprising since that’s what she basically is – a dinghy with grandeur”. She is relatively stiff and holds her canvas well in a breeze. All this makes for a fast boat that’s easily controlled. The downside is seaworthiness. For best results Vigor recommends keeping her cruising weight down, as reduced weight will reduce stresses on the rig and hull at sea.

Note that the Catalina 27 is a beamy boat, and like others, there is a tendency for weather helm on greater angles of heel that will require either reefing the mainsail to maintain balance.

Buyers Notes

More than 6,600 Catalina 27s were made, so there’s plenty to choose from. If you’re on the hunt for a boat to sail protected coastal waters at a good price then she’s a good choice. For offshore work do your research and make sure you’ve modified your boat according to recommendations – probably the most important are enlarging the cockpit drains, reworking the companionway hatch area to help direct water into the cockpit, and uprated rigging including chainplates for the aft lower shrouds.

Some known weaknesses with this boat are listed below:

  • As mentioned, early boats lacked backing plates on hardware, leading to cracks in the gelcoat and in some cases delamination of the GRP.
  • Through-hull fittings were poorly installed and secondary bondings of attachments in some cases were poor.
  • Leaky chain plates have caused bulkheads to deteriorate which in turn has increased the risk of rig failures.
  • Fuel tank installations were poor on early inboard models.
  • The original spreader sockets were made of cast aluminium which tended to crack when overstressed.
  • Through-hull fittings in early boats were simply pipe nipples glassed into the hull and will need swapping out for proper flanged, bolt-through bronze fittings.
  • While heeled, some have reported seawater back flowing into the icebox via the drain. Fit a proper seacock to the through-hull.
