Which island should I stay on?

Where you stay in the Seychelles depends on what sort of experience you’re looking for and how much time you have. The archipelago is split up into two groups, the Inner Islands and the Outer Islands. The larger islands, such as Mahe and Praslin (Inner Islands) are the easiest to get to, and they offer a wide range of activities. Naturally, the Outer Islands require more travel, but their remoteness adds another layer of exclusivity.

After learning how to choose the best Seychelles island, a hiker enjoys panoramic views in Morne Seychellois National Park on Mahe.

On Mahe , a cascade of dense green tumbles towards a thousand shades of blue. The largest island of the Seychelles, Mahe offers a mix of beautiful beaches, rainforest hikes, and local culture. So varied are Mahe’s delights that many travelers opt to venture no further, which means less travel time and more adventure. A large chunk of the island comprises the protected Morne Seychellois National Park, a green oasis traced with 15 km of hiking trails and home to Morne Seychellois, the highest point in the Seychelles. Beau Vallon, a mile-wide curve of pale sand, is the island’s pin-up beach, but there are plenty more to discover dotted around the coast. Spend an afternoon at Victoria Market, bantering with fruit vendors and shopping for souvenirs.

Where to stay on Mahe: Four Season Seychelles , Anantara Maia , and Mango House

A twenty-minute flight or hour boat journey from Mahe, Praslin ups the Seychellois drama a notch. The beaches here are sublime, particularly Anse Lazio, famed for its enormous granite boulders, and Anse Georgette, a secluded little bay backed by rainforest. The island’s interior is an explosion of life, with dense palm forests blanketing undulating mountain peaks. Visit UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve , one of only two UNESCO sites in the Seychelles, to see the coco de mer palm—towering trees that grow the world’s largest seed and a chance to spot the rare Seychelles black parrot. If you’re interested in island-hopping but short on time, take a day trip from Praslin to nearby La Digue. Ferries are regular and take just twenty minutes.

Visitor cycling past verdant palms on La Digue, a serene highlight perfect for secluded beach adventures.

La Digue has a much more laid-back, local flavor. Mostly car-free, the best way to get around is by bicycle. Spend the day cycling between secluded beaches in search of world-class snorkeling spots. Almost every beach on La Digue is a show stopper, but Anse Cocos, Anse Source d´Argent, and Grand Anse deserve special mention. Each one has pure white sand and blissfully clear water. There’s much less development here than on other islands, which gives it a relaxed feel. We recommend visiting as a day trip from nearby Praslin .

The private islands of the Seychelles

Luxury resort on Denis Island featured in our guide as a tranquil Seychelles beach getaway with unparalleled privacy and natural beauty.

Besides the three main islands, you can stay on a handful of exclusive private islands . Each one comprises luxury accommodation and a transfer, either by plane, helicopter, or boat. Prices tend to be higher, but so is the level of experience. Here are some of our favorites:

Denis Island:  For a true escape, Denis Island is tough to beat. There’s no WiFi in the rooms and no cellphone signal anywhere on the island, leaving you to enjoy 375 acres of pure paradise with zero distractions. Denis’ proximity to a continental ocean drop-off makes for world-class sport fishing and diving. The transfer from Mahe takes around thirty minutes by plane.

North Island: This rugged little outpost has just 11 villas spaced out to ensure total privacy. The island’s remote location makes for exemplary diving, with the team of resident environmentalists working to establish a marine reserve in the surrounding waters. Other conservation efforts in the North Island include sea turtles, giant tortoises, and magpie robins.

Desroches: drifting in the Seychelles outer islands, Desroches is a coralline island (as opposed to granite, which gives many of the other islands, such as Praslin and La Digue, their unique boulders) with endless white beaches and a Four Seasons property made up of private villas and suites. The flight from Mahe takes around 40 minutes.

Private beach resort on Fregate Island, offering exclusive fishing and spa experiences, a prime Seychelles beach resort destination set to welcome guests in 2025.

Relax overlooking the clear blue ocean from your private pool area on Fregate Island—considered by many to be the world’s most beautiful private island.

Félicité Island: a satellite of La Digue, you can reach Félicité by boat transfer Praslin. The Six Senses Zil Pasyon is the only resort on the island, made up of 28 one-room villas and a handful of multi-room villas. The island itself sits within a protected national park with impeccable reef snorkeling.

Silhouette Island: Make use of the on-island dive center and explore the Silhouette Marine Park, a ring of pristine reef surrounding Silhouette Island, a UNESCO heritage site. The Hilton here is a mid-range option for the Seychelles, with a mix of garden, jungle, or ocean-view villas.

Fregate Island: World-class fishing, diving, spa treatments, and beaches (one of which you can reserve completely to yourself) await on Fregate , the easternmost of the Seychelles granite islands. Currently closed to guests, the island will reopen in 2025 .

Idyllic Amirantes beach scene, a hidden gem in our Seychelles travel guide, inviting tranquil exploration and world-class marine adventures.

An idyllic Amirantes beach scene—a hidden gem in our Seychelles travel guide—inviting tranquil exploration and world-class marine adventures.

The Amirantes: An hour’s flight from Mahe, the Amirantes (Alphonse, Cosmoledo, and Astove) are bastions of untouched biodiversity and idyllic beauty. With an unspoiled marine ecosystem to discover, the diving, snorkeling, and fishing here are among the best in the world. Alphonse has the largest resort feel, with a mix of accommodation types, three bars, a spa, a dive center, and a fishing center. On Cosmeldo, the eight eco pods offer a down-to-earth luxury with a sustainable focus. There are just six rooms available on Astove, making it one of the most exclusive options in the Indian Ocean.

What’s the best way to visit the Seychelles?

The distance between the U.S. and the Seychelles means that most people add an idyllic beach break onto the end of a safari. It’s a world-class beach option with ultra-high-quality resorts and service that goes above and beyond the other similar options in the region. From Africa , the fastest direct flights are from Nairobi (three hours) and Johannesburg (five hours), which opens up East ( Kenya , Tanzania , and Uganda ) and Southern Africa for a safari.

All flights land in Mahe, the main island. From here, you can either choose to stay on Mahe or take another flight or a ferry to one of the other islands. Because the Seychelles is so remote, it has an exclusive feeling that’s difficult to rival; to truly make the most of this special place, it’s worth spending at least four days here. We recommend using one island as a base, with potential day trips and excursions added on. If you want to split your stay between multiple islands, you’ll need to spend more days here—something no one ever regrets when it comes to Seychelles.

When is the best time to visit the Seychelles?

Underwater view of a sea turtle in Seychelles, symbolizing the pristine natural beauty awaiting travelers who have just learned the best time to visit Seychelles.

Underwater view of a sea turtle in Seychelles, symbolizing the pristine natural beauty awaiting travelers .

The Seychelles are a year-round beach destination, but some months are slightly better in terms of weather. April, May, October, and November fall over the transitional period between the Northwest (November-March) and Southeast trade winds (April-October), which means the days are warm and sunny, and the water is calmer. The dry weather also means better visibility for snorkeling and diving, which is some of the best in the world. Sea turtles flock to the islands between October and December to nest, while October to November is whale shark season.

Because the archipelago covers such a huge area, weather conditions differ depending on the time of year. We can advise you on the best time to visit each island based on your interests. Generally, from May to September, the southern islands are more affected by rough seas and seaweed; from October to April, the northern side of the islands are more affected.

They walk through the old neighborhood with its markets and picturesque houses, but also through the French Quarter with its aristocratic buildings and the imposing Hanoi Opera House. They go to the most famous show of the city, the water puppet theater with roots going back 1000 years and take an evening walk in the center, where some streets are inaccessible to the crowds. They are on the famous street with the railway tracks as a train passes by and get on a traditional bicycle taxi to see another perspective of such an interesting capital.

Corinthia

They visit the city of Corinth, with its large squares, the Church of the Apostle Paul and the fashionable beach of Kalamia. They see the archaeological site of Ancient Corinth with the impressive Acropolis and Acrocorinthos. They learn all about the iconic Corinth Canal by going through it by boat and get their adrenaline pumping with a bungee jump from the Isthmus Bridge. They stay in Vrachati and go on an idyllic boating trip to the Gulf of Corinth where they meet a huge school of dozens of dolphins! They also reach the deserted Lefki beach and the seal cave in Alkyonides Bay. They climb the Geraneia Mountains and visit the Holy Monastery of Saint Patapios. They pass through Pisia and Perachora and reach Lake Vouliagmeni where they take a dip in its warm waters. Their route continues to the Heraion Lighthouse or Melagavi Lighthouse, which is considered one of the most beautiful lighthouses in Greece, and from there they enjoy a unique sunset.

Konitsa

Happy Traveler continues its travels within Greece and visits Konitsa, in a longer episode, full of enchanting images, picturesque landscapes, exciting activities and unique experiences. Eutychis and Electra travel to the beautiful acre town of Epirus and explore its picturesque corners with its stone-built mansions, cobblestones and the wonderful arched bridge. They go hiking in the Aoos Gorge, visit the historic Monastery of Panagia Stomio and cross the wire footbridge that is over the narrowest and most impressive point of the river. They reach the border with Albania, in the village of Molyvdoskepastos with the monastery of the same name, and go to Burazani to see deer up close. Afterwards, they stroll through picturesque villages built in lush green landscapes, taste local food and experience authentic Epirus hospitality to the fullest.

Mastorochoria of Epirus

Mastorochoria of Epirus

Happy Traveler, in the previous episode, visited the beautiful and picturesque Konitsa. Eutychis and Elektra continue their journey in this region, to the north of the prefecture of Ioannina and explore the unrepeatable beauty of Mastorochoria on the southern slopes of Grammos. They cross the Sarandaporos river and visit the traditional mountain villages of craftsmen with their authentic stone houses of continental architecture, such as Ganadio, the village of Pyrsoyianni and the picturesque Kastaniani. They also go up to the village of Amarantos with its thermal baths and the incredible view towards the Pindos mountain range, while on the way they see a waterfall and the historic Tree Church of Agios Paisios. Continuing their trek in this arid region of Greece, they continue even further north and pass through the village of Theotoko and the village of Kefalochori, to end up in Aetomilitsa which is one of the highest - if not the highest - village in Greece.

Gramos

They go to Eptachori where they see an old watermill and an old picturesque arched bridge. Then they drive on one of the most beautiful mountain roads in Greece to reach Nea Kotyli, where the guesthouse they will stay at is located at an altitude of 1450 meters. The next morning they pass through the village of Pefko and climb up towards one of the most mountainous undeveloped villages of our country, the village of Grammos, also known as Grammousta. From there they start the route up the mountain to reach the highest lake in Greece, the alpine dragon lake Gistova. They continue hiking to the top of Grammos, the fourth highest mountain in Greece, and "conquer" the peak of Tsouka Petsik at 2,520 meters. Returning to Nea Kotili, they pass the National Reconciliation Park and the imposing Gremos of Haros with its breathtaking vertical white rocks. They also take a walk in the center of Nea Kotyli and then go down to Nestorio for a dip in the cool waters of the Aliakmonas River.

Paros (Part 1)

Paros (Part 1)

The beginning takes place in one of the top islands, Paros. Our travelers explore the beautiful island of the Cyclades in two episodes and bring our holidays even closer. In the first part, they explore the capital Parikia with its picturesque alleys, the fairytale Naoussa with its Venetian castle and the north and east side of the island. They ride in the beautiful Cycladic landscape and reach Chrysi beach with lots of wind and numerous surfers. They go to Piso Livadi and climb to the Monastery of Agios Antonios to enjoy the endless view. They hike the paths of the island to finally reach the lighthouse of Korakas. Finally, they climb the rocks where the ancient Mycenaean acropolis was located to see from above the impressive bay of Naoussa. The exploration of Paros, with its unparalleled natural beauty, endless sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and impressive landscapes continues in the next episode of Happy Traveller.

Paros (Part 2)

Paros (Part 2)

In the second part, they explore the center of the island and visit picturesque mountain villages such as Lefkes, which do not resemble the Cycladic landscape at all. They also see the area where the ancient quarries of Paros were located, reach the monastery of Agioi Anargyro with the best view on the island and enjoy a wonderful sunset in Parikia. They then see the eastern and southern sides of the island reaching the salt flats, from where they board a traditional boat for an experience of a lifetime with dinner in the most romantic setting as the sun sets on the horizon. In this episode, they also go on a day trip to Antiparos where they are impressed with the beaches, the caves and the puppet country with the alleys and the welcoming people. The explorations of the Greek islands continue in the next episodes of Happy Traveler with Eutychis and Elektra taking us on a mental journey to the most beautiful and summery corners of Greece.

Naxos (Part 1)

Naxos (Part 1)

After the beautiful Paros, Happy Traveler travels to the largest island of the Cyclades, Naxos, with the aim of exploring it from end to end. In the first part, Eutychis and Electra visit the country of Naxos with its historic castle and beautiful alleys and see the west coast with its picturesque villages and potato fields. Then, they drive towards the northernmost end with the aim of reaching the village of Apollonas and in between they visit semi-mountainous villages with traditional cuisine, ancient quarries, an abandoned monastery and by hiking they reach the waterfall of Routsounas. Naxos, however, still has a lot to offer our travelers and SKAI viewers, and that is why the exploration of the island will continue in the next episode.

Naxos (Part 2)

Naxos (Part 2)

An episode about Naxos with its countless natural beauties, picturesque villages and enchanting beaches is not enough. That is why Happy Traveler travelers continue to explore the largest island of the Cyclades. Eutychis and Elektra, in the second part of the journey, see the center of Naxos with the famous villages of Halki and Filoti. They are impressed by the imposing towers and from the path they go up to the mythical cave of Za, on the highest mountain of Naxos. Then, they drive to the special Apeiranthos and the most unspoiled touristic southeast side of the island, where they are charmed by the unique beaches, the green waters and the hospitable inhabitants. The tour of the Greek islands does not stop here and our travelers board the ship for the next Cycladic destination.

Small Cyclades

Small Cyclades

Eutychis and Electra land in Heraklia, Schinoussa and Donoussa. In Heraklia, they see the main settlements of the island, the most beautiful beaches, the old castle and the impressive cave of Cyclops as well as the cave of Agios Ioannis. They meet locals and take a boat to the south side to see the famous Alimnia Bay with the WWII sunken plane. In Schinoussa, they walk through the picturesque countryside, visit many of the island's idyllic beaches, see beautiful churches, admire Cycladic windmills and taste local delicacies. In Donoussa, they stroll through the central settlement, walk to the heavenly Kedros beach and then reach Kalotaritissa with its picturesque village and incredibly beautiful beach. The first part of the trip to the small Cyclades ends at Trypiti beach of Donoussa with the impressive cave in the rock.

Koufonisia

Our travelers continue their summer trip to the Cyclades and their next destination is the heavenly Koufonisia, one of the most popular destinations of recent years. They arrive by boat at the port and immediately face Ammos beach in front of the central settlement, one of the best beaches in Greece. They explore the tiny Ano Koufonissi from end to end, wander the country's alleys and go to the highest point of the island to enjoy the view. They admire the picturesque chapel of the Prophet Elias without a roof, reach places with impressive rock formations, take a dip in a natural pool and go hiking to reach the Eye of the Devil, the impressive cave that looks like a crater with water coming out of it sea. By inflatable, they go to Keros and by boat to Kato Koufonissi for a walk and food.

Amorgos (Part 1)

Amorgos (Part 1)

This week we are traveling to Amorgos. Arriving, the first thing we see is Katapola, which we will simultaneously explore together with the neighboring rachidi and the Wood Hornbill. In the afternoon we will go for a walk in the picturesque country with the narrow alleys, the impressive castle on the rock and the classic Cycladic windmills on the ridge above the settlement. The next day we will start the exploration of southern Amorgos. We will go to Mouros beach with its turquoise waters and steep cliffs. We will see the village of Vourtsi with the ancient Arkesini and after tasting local flavors in the new Arkesini we will continue to Kalofana, Agia Paraskevi Monastery and paradise beach. Then we will go down to the imposing wreck of Olympia and we will end up in Kalotaritissa, one of the most impressive spots of Amorgos. We will conclude this episode with our visit to the Holy Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa and the idyllic little beach of Agia Anna.

Amorgos (Part 2)

Amorgos (Part 2)

Happy Traveler continues its summer excursion to beautiful Amorgos and in the second episode, on Saturday 29 July, it explores the northern side of the island. Our travelers go to the abandoned ghost village of Asfontylitis and then visit the traditional settlement of Tholaria as well as Lagada which is located at the edge of the Araklos gorge and is surrounded by high mountains. From there, they arrive in Aegiali where they will stay for the time they will be in North Amorgos. They go to the beach of Agios Pavlos and from there take a boat to the island opposite, Nikouria. They hike to the barren northern part of the island to see the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. Finally, they climb up to Prophet Ilias, in the center of the island, to see the sunrise and admire from there, all of Amorgos and the endless blue of the Aegean!

Astypalaia

Our travelers close this year with a magical episode in the "Butterfly of the Aegean", as Astypalaia is called, due to its special shape. They arrive by boat and admire the port and the impressive Chora of the island with its picturesque alleys and historic churches such as Panagia Portaitissa. They see the windmills but also the great castle, learning about the history of the island from ancient times to the present day. They explore interesting locations, heavenly beaches and beautiful villages of Astypalaia as well as churches built in unlikely places. They reach Vathi and go by boat to see one of the most unique beaches of the Aegean, Kounoupa and Koutsomyti. Finally, they are impressed by the Red Rock with its hidden cave and deep blue waters.

A Solo Traveller's Guide to Seychelles

Its not all about couples. Spoil yourself at a world class spa like this at Six Senses.

For a country renowned for being one of the top honeymoon spots in the world, Seychelles seems like an unusual choice for a solo traveller. However, there are plenty of experiences the country offers to visitors whether on a romantic getaway or a solo expedition; here are some tips for a successful and pleasant trip to Seychelles.

There are no visa requirements to enter Seychelles. There are a few things necessary to get through customs though:

A valid passport A return or onward ticket Proof of accommodation* Enough funds for duration of stay

*Accommodations must be booked before entering the country.

There are certain items tourists are not allowed to bring into the country as well, so watch out for that.

Love Yourself

It doesn’t have to be all about the couples, Seychelles can be the perfect place to connect and take part in some self-care. With so many unmissable activities in Seychelles—including relaxing on the beach, getting pampered at a world-class spa, or going on a hike—there is no reason to ever feel bored.

It’s not all about couples. Spoil yourself at a world class spa like this at Six Senses.

Whether between islands or on the island, transport in Seychelles is pretty necessary. Those not using a tour operator will need to organise this.

Between islands

Helicopter: obviously this is the highest end of inter-island travel. Charter a helicopter arrival to many different islands. The helicopter (and private plane) operator in Seychelles is Zil Air .

Plane: a few of the islands have runways for inter-island flights including Mahé, Praslin, Bird Island, Fregate Island, and Dennis Island. Air Seychelles operates the inter-island service.

Boat: the Cat Cocos Ferry travel between Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue Islands. Charter boats also travel to other islands, and most accommodations will recommend a good boat charter company close to them.

Air Seychelles Head Office, Mahé Island, Seychelles , +248 4 391 000

Pier Cat Cocos, Praslin, Seychelles , +248 4 324 843

SPTC Bus

On-island transport

Car hire: there are multiple car hire companies available in Seychelles, all charging pretty much the same.

Bus: taking the bus is rather unglamorous, but it’s an experience all its own. Costing just 10scr (€.64; $.74) for any journey (whether to the next stop or across the island) it’s certainly friendly on the pocket. They are often very busy, so seats aren’t always available. Bus services stop at around 6 pm

Taxi: multiple taxis run, and the accommodations will recommend and arrange rides for their guests.

Grand Anse, La Digue, Seychelles

Safety first!

Crime in Seychelles is low compared to many other countries in the world. The biggest thing to look out for is petty theft, particularly on beaches. Without a doubt, this is the worst on Mahé. Keep an eye on belongings and there should be no problem. Of course, having travel insurance in case the worst happens provides peace of mind.

Pick up local SIM cards for very cheap in most local stores. In fact, visitors to the island are often given them for free in arrival packs. There’s good 3G and 4G coverage across Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue.

Seychelles is free of malaria, yellow fever, and Zika . There are no venomous snakes or spiders to worry about either—although centipedes will give a nasty bite if stood upon; this is not a common occurrence though.

There are hospitals on Mahé and Praslin and a small hospital on La Digue. There are also health centres in pretty much every district in Seychelles. More serious injuries will be dealt with on Mahé and plane/helicopters will be chartered to Victoria Hospital if needed.

Travel Guide To The Seychelles

Free travel guide to the Seychelles

The Seychelles is a nation of 115 islands scattered over 400,000sq km of Indian Ocean, a few degrees south of the equator. Some islands are grand and granitic, others are tiny coral outcrops poking out of the sea. Once known as a five-star destination with three-star hotels, the new-look Seychelles offers areas of outstanding man-made beauty from which to appreciate its teeming wildlife and sweeps of white sand.

Where to stay in Seychelles

Four seasons resort seychelles at desroches island.

Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island (+44 1494 678400; turquoiseholidays.co.uk ) is the latest hotel to crop up on this archipelago on the Indian Ocean. The resort is made up of a handful of private houses on Madam Zabre beach in the north and a collection of private villas in the south, all of which are set in gardens planted with mangrove, bougainvillaea and frangipani with private pools and direct access to a beach. Despite the big-name credentials, witty design details (Barbie-pink peacock chairs, tropical-leaf print upholstery) sit side by side with a commitment to the environment, backed by local conservation officer Matthew Morgan, who hopes to protect the marine life and thick forest at the northern tip of the island.

BANYAN TREE SEYCHELLES

Anse Intendance, Mahé, Seychelles (+2 484 383 500; banyantree.com ). Situated on a stunning beach on Mahé, the main island, these 60 stand-alone villas, each with a private plunge pool, are hidden by lush planting: half are on the beach, the rest on palm-forested slopes. The style is whitewashed-colonial and the main infinity pool (overlooking the ocean which can be rough at times) and spa are unbeatable. Banyan Tree featured in The Hot List 2003. £££££

CHATEAU DE FEUILLES

Pointe Cabris, Praslin Island, Seychelles (00 248 290 000; chateaudefeuilles.com ). Set among mango and coconut trees with spectacular views of the ocean, the Château de Feuilles has nine rooms divided between the château and various thatched bungalows built of local architecture. It is a member of Relais & Château and offers activities such as sailing, fishing, diving, snorkelling and trips to nearby islands. ££££

COUSINE ISLAND

Cousine Island, Seychelles (00 248 321 107; cousineisland.com ). There are no tree houses or butlers or portable barbecues on Cousine Island. Here the conservation programme came first, the tiny four-villa hotel being built as an afterthought; and it still comes first. The hotel buildings are exquisitely pretty in the Seychellois French-colonial style, with steep-pitched roofs, white-painted wood, trellising and frilly fretwork along the eaves. There's an excellent chef, the waitresses are kind and motherly, and there is a spa in the old plantation house overlooking the beach. On Cousine you don't have to schedule a 'nature walk', although the island's two ecologists will glady take you on one: there's really no other kind of walk available. Full board; minimum stay three nights. £££££

FREGATE ISLAND PRIVATE

Frégate Island, Seychelles (+49 7221 9009 922; fregate.com ). Frégate Island Private was the pioneer among these nature reserves combined with resorts, and it's still the one from which the others learn their lessons. North Island (see below) has the wilderness-chic, but Frégate has the wilderness. It's large enough to ensure that even if you stay a week you can take a different walk each morning, through dense forest, over bare upland terrain with thousands of seabirds wheeling overhead, along the coastline above the island's seven beaches or through groves of coconut palms beneath which the tortoises graze ceaselessly. Nothing is too much trouble of too fanciful for the staff. At night, the 18th-century Plantation House is a creole restaurant, while the 16 villas and main restaurant are built on a hillside above the longest beach. Colours are bright, wall hangings are boldly patterned, and there are lots of louvred doors, slow-turning fans, large pieces of dark-varnished wooden furniture. Full board; minimum stay three nights. Frégate Island Private featured in The Gold List 2005. £££££

LA DIGUE ISLAND LODGE

Anse Reunion, La Digue, Seychelles (00 248 292 525; ladigue.sc ). The lodge is set among a peaceful and exotic garden of coconut palms and takamaka trees on Anse Reunion beach overlooking Praslin Island. Among its many assets, the lodge boasts the only swimming pool on the island and accommodation in a variety of rooms and villas. £££

LE MERIDIEN FISHERMAN'S COVE

Bel Ombre, Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles (00 248 677 000; starwoodhotels.com ). Located on the southern tip of Beau Vallon, this well-established Mahé hotel was restored in 2004 and features granite walls, thatched roofs and a maze of fountains. There are 68 rooms and suites, decorated in contemporary or Creole style. ££££

L'UNION ESTATE

Anse Reunion, La Digue, Seychelles (00 248 292 525; ladigue.sc ). There are just four villas on L'Union Estate, right on the beach, among gardens and coconut palms. Each has two air-conditioned double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a large sitting/dining room, fully equipped kitchen and a balcony, from which you can look west across to Praslin, or watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean. The estate is closed to the public at night, so it's very peaceful. Meals are served in the palm-thatched restaurant at the La Digue Island Lodge, where L'Union guests can use all facilities. ££££

MAIA LUXURY RESORT

Anse Louis, Mahé, Seychelles (00 248 390 000; maia.com.sc ). Landscape artist and architect Bill Bensley took full advantage of Maia's rocky location high above Anse Louis beach to position the resort's 30 villas for maximum privacy, set among tropical flowers and palms in the undulating grounds. Generous terraces with panoramic views include dining areas, day beds, outdoor baths and private, infinity-edged swimming pools that seem to merge with the Indian Ocean below. A dedicated butler takes care of everything from unpacking to packing, and diving and deep-sea fishing trips are easily arranged. Yoga classes can be organised at the Balinese-staffed spa, and there is an open-air dining pavilion with a beachfront bar for sundowners. The food is excellent, particularly the private barbecues cooked at the villas, which include tandoori chicken and local lobster served with a spicy Creole sauce. Maia was featured in The Hot List 2007. £££££

NORTH ISLAND

North Island, Seychelles (+27 610 890 462; north-island.com . An assembly of airy, thatched tree houses and suspended walkways slung on a hillside between woods and ocean, this is the kind of home Robinson Crusoe might have built if he'd had a whole squad of Man Fridays. North Island is a beautiful place for beautiful people. The guests are glamorous, and the staff likewise. No one will oblige you to take an interest in the island's ecology, but you can hardly ignore it. At lunchtime you'll eat under the shade of a venerable takamaka tree on the edge of the beach, and the forest surrounds your villa on every landward side. The tortoises, once down to a population of only five, are breeding. And the breakfast your butler serves you on your terrace tastes all the better after an hour or two spent scrambling over the island's rocky escarpments, looking down on the pure-white fairy terns dipping and turning above the newly restored forest. Full board. North Island featured in The Gold List 2009. £££££

PATATRAN VILLAGE

Anse Patates, La Digue, Seychelles (00 248 294 300; patatranseychelles.com ). Located at the northern tip of La Digue island, Patatran Village offers good accommodation at a slightly lower cost. Each villa is detached, with a bright air-conditioned double bedroom, bathroom, and fridge, plus large sliding windows on to a private balcony overlooking Anse Patates. The restaurant is pleasantly located high above the ocean to catch the sea breezes, and looks out over Soeurs and Félicité Islands. Meals are unhurried, generous and good, with live Creole guitar music some nights. ££

Things to do in Seychelles

Because each island in the Seychelles is very different, many visitors choose a two or three-stop holiday. Inter-island plane transfers are efficient and well-run, as well as thrilling.

BIRD ISLAND Bird Island is situated about 60 miles from the main island of Mahe, and is easily reached by plane. Its 170 acres are covered in corals and lined with the purest white sand. COUSINE ISLAND A speck about 6km off the west coast of Praslin, Cousine Island is owned by a South African businessman, who has embarked on an intensive conservation programme to restore it to its primal state. About 2,000 indigenous trees have been planted, and 12 endangered magpie robins have been introduced to share the island with a couple of thousand nesting birds (fairy terns, sooty terns, shearwaters, Seychelles brush warblers, Fodies) and four giant tortoises (each of which, apparently, command around the same market value as a giraffe). Much of the rocky island is out of bounds to visitors. FREGATE ISLAND There are wonderful walks to be had on Frégate - through primeval jungle, up enormous granite outcrops and along white-sand beaches. Away from the resort, the rest of the island is given over to conservation projects (protecting the endangered magpie robin population, among others), cultivation (vegetables produced with a very sophisticated hydroponics system), livestock (pigs, cows, chickens) and recreation (water sports and scuba-diving; fishing boats, yachts, catamarans and motorboats). LA DIGUE ISLAND The island's stunning beaches of silky white sand are lapped by turquoise seas. The best beach, Anse Source D'Argent, is reachable by bicycle. Other good places to swim are Petite Anse, with its large smooth boulders. La Digue's west coast, south of La Passe, is protected by a reef, creating calm water, ideal for snorkelling. Besides the pleasures of beach life, La Digue offers horse riding, diving, fishing and boat trips. The bird sanctuary is a woodland of takamaka and badamie (Indian almond) trees, home to several nesting pairs of the rare, endemic black paradise flycatcher. Horse riding is available at L'Union Estate and diving instruction, expeditions and boat trips to tiny Félicité Island (population 12) can be arranged at La Digue Island Lodge. MAHE ISLAND Mahé is the largest island, and home to 65,000 people. It has the highest mountain ranges in the Seychelles and the world's smallest capital, Victoria. For a stylish souvenir, Michael Adams, Seychelles' most famous artist, has a studio/gallery at his home at Anse aux Poules Bleues (00 248 361 006; michaeladamsart.com ). PRASLIN ISLAND The archipelago's second-largest island is a 15-minute plane hop from Mahé. It is most famous for the Vallée de Mai (open 8am-5.30pm), a World Heritage Site home to the distinctive coco de mer palm. It is a fascinating, friendly and unspoilt island to explore by foot, bicycle or hire-car. A number of excursions, including cruises, bird-watching and photographic expeditions are available from both Mahé and Praslin.

Seychelles Solo – Traveling the Ultimate Honeymoon Destination Alone.

Grand Anse beach with green bushes and boulders in Seychelles

Has solo travel to Seychelles or any other presumed honeymoon destination ever crossed your mind? The other day  I was working on a post for Travelettes  about what it means to be a woman when it comes to traveling. I never ventured there before because while I am a woman who travels I really dislike labels. So I don’t write about female travel, I just do my thing and write about it. Same goes for solo travel. Another box right there. Yes, I usually travel on my own. Sometimes with a group, rarely with friends, and after my last boyfriend travel disaster I have stayed clear of that too.

So I guess technically I would need to check the box single solo traveler but the last thing I want to do is describe myself as yet another solo female traveler. If you want to know how to venture out into the world as a woman on your own, there are other blogs who have written extensively about both, so I don’t want to bore you with tips a la ‘take a book to a restaurant’ or ‘take a whistle’ (for that you could just read my book!). I also still harbor some hope that the occasional guy reads this (though my stats tell a different story) and I want to be at least prepared.

Fregatte birds on the blue sky in the Seychelles

The solo travel part, however, is a different thing, because last night I remembered my first solo trip and it got me so excited that I had to share it. For the sake of the story, let’s disregard the fact that by the time this trip came along I had already moved to America twice, back to Germany once, and currently lived in South Africa. But that was all moving, not traveling.

Solo Travel Seychelles

When I just moved to Cape Town I inherited some money and wanted to spend it on something absolute useless or useful, depending on where traveling falls for you. I chose to go to Seychelles for no other reasons than that it looked nice, Seychelles seemed like a safe destination for a solo (girl) trip, and it wasn’t too far from South Africa.

Tree branches piled on the beach in front of the ocean during sunset in the Seychelles

Of course, Seychelles islands are not simply nice, they are stunning and a few of their beaches regularly top the best beaches in the world charts and for good reason. I visited three of its 115 islands and island hopping is the way to go, especially if you are flying solo. I started on the main island Mahé where I drove around everywhere in a bright red miniature Jeep sort of car that made me feel quite adventurous. I visited  Kreol Fleurage , a local perfumery, drove through hills and jungles, and had the best massage at the Banyan Tree (which luckily I got to repeat at their spa in Bangkok a few years later!). Unfortunately, I didn’t stay there, but the beach was one of my favorites and I didn’t even mind paying $9 for an iced coffee because the view it came with was so amazing. And mind you, I still think about the coffee today, so it was definitely worth it. After all, Seychelles holidays are for splurging whether you travel there solo or not.

From Mahé, I went to Praslin to visit the Vallée de Mai with its coco de mer (butt-shaped coconuts) and was super excited to realize that you can just pick up regular coconuts for free on the beaches here. I also realized that opening a coconut is a task not to be underestimated. Solo travel in the Seychelles can have its ups and downs and this was definitely a down – I still feel sorry for the tiles and the coconut.

Boulders and tree branches in the Seychelles

My final stop was La Digue, a tiny island with no cars and little streetlights. It was my favorite and I think it was here where I fell in love with traveling on my own: I discovered selfies (that was 10 years ago so I was way before my time!) and the art of doing nothing or at least the art of only doing what I wanted. That included lying on the beach for hours re-reading my books, I had brought too few, taking walks in the jungle, and finding a resident restaurant that I ate at every night. The latter wasn’t by choice as it was off-season in Seychelles and many were simply closed, but still, the creature of habit in me was happy. In Seychelles I also went snorkeling for the first time in very warm water with lots of things to see and I think it was then that I fell in love with the underwater world.

All in all, it was the perfect trip and traveling alone made this trip entirely mine. While you can say that I only took tentative baby steps in paradise with my solo travel in Seychelles, it did lay the groundwork of all solo trips to come: knowing that I like my own company.

Annika Ziehen taking a selfie on her solo travel in the Seychelles

*This is really not up to my usual selfie standard, but since it was done without iPhone and I am look happy, I thought I should share.*

& if you really want some tips for solo travel in Seychelles (or in any other honeymoon destination for that matter), here you are…
  • Don’t worry about Seychelles being a honeymoon destination because you may just get special treatment for you are the poor lonesome person amongst all the happy couples.
  • Also, if you ever see someone’s significant other lounging in the shallow water like a mermaid wearing a red speedo while having his picture taken, you start to seriously rethink the concept of marriage. Personally, I had never been so happy to be on my own after witnessing that.
  • Don’t get a fresh coconut halfway through a jungle hike in Seychelles because you will be left with the choice of getting a stomach ache from drinking the whole thing too quickly or you will have to carry a damn heavy coconut all by yourself.
  • Are the Seychelles expensive? Well, backpacking in Seychelles is not really a thing at least not when it comes to budget. To make this expensive destination bearable consider traveling here in the off-season and go for self-catering accommodation.
  • Are the Seychelles safe? I felt incredibly safe during my stay, even traveling Seychelles alone but remember that in a battle of a tortoise against a coconut, the coconut always wins. In the battle of coconut against floor tiles, the coconut also wins. Buy an opened coconut or bring a hammer and don’t lie under palm trees with coconuts!*

*Those won’t just apply when you do Seychelles solo travel, but I thought they were important to know.

Hi. I am travelling to Praslin and La Digue by myself in January. I have seen some alarming news about safety in the islands and I really didn’t t expect that. I would be greatful to hear more about your trip if you don t mind. Thank you. Nancy

Hi Nancy, what have your heard in particular? Was that something news related or general safety advice? My trip was quite a few years ago so I wouldn’t be able to comment on anything current. When I was there, I felt incredibly safe even traveling on my own. I didn’t even adhere to the usual safety rules as in not walking around by myself at night and was absolutely fine. But as I said that was years ago. Check out or contact https://www.thetravelmanuel.com – Vaughan has just been so he could maybe help with that. Tell him Annika sent you 🙂

beautiful pictures !

Thank you 🙂

Awesome write up! haha and loved your adventures with the coconut 😀

Σεϋχέλλες: Χρήματα και κόστη ταξιδιού

happy traveller seychelles

Γίνεται να ταξιδέψεις τελικά Σεϋχέλλες χωρίς να καταξοδευτείς;

Κλείσε διαμονή στις Σεϋχέλλες

happy traveller seychelles

Συνάλλαγμα: Που και πότε να αλλάξω λεφτά όταν ταξιδεύω;
