Whether you're short on vacation days or you only have a long weekend to spare, three-night cruises offer a fun and affordable way to get a change of scenery. These shorter sailings from the U.S. often amount to a weekend cruise and only depart from Florida and California for now. However, short cruises still let you dine and dance on board, enjoy world-class entertainment, and visit nearby destinations like Nassau in the Bahamas; Key West, Florida; or Ensenada, Mexico.

If you're looking for short cruises that pack a lot of good times into a weekend vacation, you should know that many cruise lines offer these trips, including Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. 3-Day Cruises From Florida

Departure port: Miami

Stops: Key West, Florida; Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas

Starting price: $399 per person

This three-night cruise on Norwegian Sky departs from Miami in August 2024 with stops at two iconic tropical destinations. The vessel's first stop is Key West , where cruise passengers will have the day to visit the southernmost tip of the United States, book a snorkeling or kayaking tour, or bar hop along the world-famous Duval Street. From there, the cruise stops at Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, which is a private island paradise that's only for cruise passengers. Here, visitors can enjoy some beach time, plan a WaveRunner adventure or snorkel the clear waters to watch out for wildlife.

When not at port, passengers on Norwegian Sky can enjoy the ship's 10 dining options, onboard spa, casino at sea, and variety of pools and hot tubs. The Norwegian Cruise Line vessel even has a sushi bar and a Starbucks onboard, and it was completely renovated from top to bottom in 2019.

Departure port: Port Canaveral, Florida (Orlando)

Stops: Nassau and Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, Bahamas

This three-night cruise on MSC Seashore departs from Port Canaveral near Orlando and takes passengers to two tropical destinations in the nearby Bahamas . Celebrity Reflection from Fort Lauderdale

Stops: Perfect Day at CocoCay and Nassau, Bahamas

Starting price: $273 per person

This three-night cruise on Celebrity Cruises ' Celebrity Reflection departs from Fort Lauderdale and leaves for two days in the sunny Bahamas. The first stop gives guests a full day to enjoy at Perfect Day at CocoCay, a cruise line private island that's typically reserved for Royal Caribbean guests. This island paradise features an exclusive beach club, idyllic white sand beaches for swimming and floating, a water park, a zip line, and plenty of places to eat and drink all day. The next stop is Nassau: Visitors can dine and shop their way through the port area or book a fun day pass to the Baha Bay water park, which is located at resort Baha Mar and features waterslides, an expansive lazy river and incredible cuisine options right at the park.

Celebrity Reflection was recently refurbished in 2022. Royal Caribbean International also boasts a Bahamas cruise from Fort Lauderdale that stops in Nassau and at the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Weekend cruises: How to find 2- and 3-night getaways

Weekend trips let you get away without missing too much work or school — but what if your preferred escape is a cruise? I'm here to tell you that weekend cruises are a real thing and can be a wonderful way of getting your ship fix when you're short on time.

The days of the two-night cruise to nowhere are gone, but two- and three-night weekend cruises still exist from ports ranging from Miami to Los Angeles. Read on to learn who sails these short getaways, where you can go and how much that weekend jaunt to the Bahamas is going to cost you.

Best weekend cruise itineraries

If you're looking to hop a ship for a few nights, you can't just sail from anywhere to anywhere. It's not like booking a hotel. Thanks to the complicated Passenger Vessel Services Act , foreign-flagged cruise ships cannot leave port, sail in circles with their casinos, shops and spas open, then return back to port two nights later. Nor can they hop from one U.S. city to another. Ships need to call in another country before heading back – which limits where you can sail on a weekend cruise.

The most popular weekend cruises sail from Miami, Port Canaveral or Palm Beach in Florida, to the Bahamas, with one or two stops in Nassau, Freeport or the cruise line's private island. Consider it a quick dash to the beach — ironic because you have to get to a warm-weather, coastal area to meet your ship in the first place.

On the Pacific Coast, weekend cruises from Los Angeles, San Diego or Long Beach in California (near Los Angeles) head to Ensenada, Mexico for a quick getaway. Farther north, you might find a short repositioning sailing between Seattle or San Francisco and Vancouver, British Columbia at the beginning or end of the Alaska cruise season .

Weekend cruises from New York or other East Coast ports like Boston or Baltimore don't really exist because two or three nights is not enough time to get to Canada, Bermuda or the Bahamas and back again.

The other key thing to understand is a weekend cruise will typically require some time off work or missed school. That's because most cruise ships board in the afternoon and depart in the early evening then return to port in the morning. You can't punch out of work at 5 p.m. on Friday, hop aboard a ship and return Sunday night.

The most likely scenario is that you'll arrive at your ship Friday afternoon for a three-night cruise, which will deliver you back to port on Monday morning. Depending on your working hours, you might need to take a half day off on Friday and arrive late to work on Monday. If you've got a flexible schedule or Fridays off — no problem. A few lines offer Thursday or Saturday departures for three-night cruises, but they're rare and would require more missed school or work.

Two-nighters are rare in the weekend cruise world but do exist. The key line for cruisers short on time is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (come late April, it will transition into Margaritaville at Sea ).

This line sails exclusively two-night cruises back and forth between West Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. Depending on the week, you could depart on a Friday, spend Saturday on Grand Bahama Island and come home Sunday. Or, leave Saturday, beach it up Sunday and return Monday morning.

Cruise lines sailing 2- and 3-night weekend cruises

You can count on Bahamas Paradise/Margaritaville at Sea for a quick weekend cruise fix, but that's a one-ship cruise line sailing an older, refurbished ship. From the major cruise lines, most of the big-ship lines offer a consistent schedule of three-night cruises. The higher-end, luxury lines rarely offer a sailing that short.

Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean all offer three-night Bahamas cruises from Florida to Nassau and/or the line's private island. Departure ports include Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.

Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean also take care of West Coast folks with three-night sailings from southern California (Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Diego) to Ensenada, Mexico.

You can count on those lines to offer entire seasons of short sailings. A few other lines, such as Holland America or Princess Cruises , will offer the occasional repositioning sailing along the Pacific Coast between San Francisco or Seattle and Vancouver. Sometimes those short cruises will fall over a weekend, allowing you that quick getaway without missing work.

Weekend cruise cost

Cheap weekend cruises are not hard to find; three-night sailings are among the most affordable cruises you can buy, both because you're not on board all that long, and because cruise lines often put older ships without the latest wow-factor attractions on these routes.

I'm currently seeing three-night Bahamas cruises from $129 per person, based on two people sharing an inside (windowless) cabin . That breaks down to $43/night for transportation, food, accommodations and entertainment for one person ($86/night for a couple). You'll have a hard time finding a hotel for that price, let alone lodging plus multiple meals.

The cheapest balcony cabin I found was just shy of $200 total for one person (under $65 per night), though fares in the $200s and $300s were more common.

Prices will vary depending on the cruise line, ship, sail date and how far in advance you're booking. If you're flexible on timing, look for the best weekend cruise deals and plan your getaway for those dates.

Three-night Mexico cruises at press time are starting at $149 per person ($50 per night), with balconies from $237 ($79 per night).

Note that Disney cruises to the Bahamas or Mexico are priced much higher than other cruise lines. Pricing for a three-night Disney Mexico cruise starts just shy of $1,000 per person for an inside cabin and a three-night Bahamas cruise from $625 per person. Still, it's cheaper than a weeklong Disney cruise.

Pros and cons of weekend cruises

Weekend cruises only work if you live within easy driving distance of a departure port. That way, you can still work half a day on Friday and simply arrive back to work a little late on Monday (assuming you're a 9-to-5-er).

If you need to fly or drive many hours to your departure port, you're looking at more of a long weekend with a day or two of time off from work required. However, if you have a flexible schedule or work off hours, a weekend cruise is definitely doable.

Weekend cruises have many benefits, the obvious one being they do not require missing much school or work. They're more affordable than a longer cruise, so they can be great for folks on a budget. You can tack them onto a longer vacation in Florida or California to combine two trips into one.

These short trips are also a great way to rack up points toward elite status on your favorite cruise line, especially if you book a suite that earns you extra points.

The drawbacks are the lack of choice in destination and cruise line. You won't be able to try every restaurant or attraction on board your cruise ship because you simply won't have enough time.

If you party hard, get sunburned or wear yourself out with lots of active shore excursions, you might come home exhausted instead of well rested and not ready to return to the office on Monday.

Weekend cruises also have a reputation for being party cruises. The last time I sailed on a three-night cruise, I met lots of ladies on bachelorette party getaways, and the nightclub, bars and karaoke were hopping each evening — more so than on longer cruises. If you're looking for a more sedate atmosphere, a longer cruise might be more your speed.

Bottom line

Weekend cruises are a fun way to get your ship fix without taking a full vacation or breaking the bank. They make more sense if you live within an hour or two of your cruise ship's departure port, but it can still be worth taking a long weekend for a three-day cruise even if you have to build in some travel time.

However, if you love cruising so much that you might have a hard time leaving a ship after just a few nights, you might want to skip the weekend sailing and save up for a weeklong cruise instead.

Using a mobile app to find cruise activities makes it difficult to get away from your phone on vacation. Never fear, TouringPlans is here! Today I’m going to run through how to find scheduled activities, fast , so that you can plan your day quickly. If you’re a DCL veteran who used the paper Navigators in the past, you might even find that the digital Navigator has some big advantages.

This post is tightly focused on how to find activity and entertainment information. Do you already know the basics of using the DCL Navigator app on board? Ship Information

Tapping “Today’s Itinerary” on the Home Screen gives you the big picture. You’ll find weather, what the ship is doing that day, etc. If it’s a port day this is where you’ll find the All Ashore and All Aboard times, and tapping the “Going Ashore” icon will give you a variety of information that is the same for every port.

Scrolling the Today’s Itinerary screen on a port day will bring up information about Emergency Contacts and the Ship’s Agent at the port. If you’re going ashore, it can be a good idea to take a screenshot of the Contact Information screen. That way you’ll have the information no matter what the internet situation is.

The Explore Screen

For entertainment, activity, and dining schedules, you’ll want to head for the Explore screen. To use this section well, remember there’s more than one way to peel an orange. Want to see movie schedules? There are at least four different ways to access them. Disney has worked hard to expose a lot of information so don’t be afraid to tap, tap, tap.

Start by tapping the ship on the bottom icon bar to open the Explore screen. At the top of this screen, there are four features you’ll want to take note of.

⭐ You can change the date you’re looking at — tap the date at the top and select a different day. This is an advantage over the old paper Navigators, where tomorrow’s schedule was always a mystery.

⭐ The slider menu lets you quickly zero in on activity types. Once you are familiar with this slider, it will often be the fastest way to access what you’re looking for.

⭐ The Filter button can narrow the big list in the Daily Activities tab rapidly. This Filter button is only visible when the slider menu rests on Daily Activities.

⭐ On the top left, you can tap the small ship for deck plans to find your way around the boat and not just around the schedule.

In the lower part of the screen, you’ll see a list. This can be a list of activity “cards” or a list of venue “cards”, depending on which tab of the slider menu is selected. Let’s talk about the activity cards first; the Daily Activities and Character Greetings tabs will have this type of list.

Activity Cards & Schedules

Activity cards show the time and location of the activity, how long it takes, and what age group it’s aimed at. They also have a heart in the upper right corner; tapping the heart adds or removes activities from your personal plans. Once you’ve hearted an activity, its card will appear on the My Plans screen. You’ll get reminder notifications for everything in My Plans 15 minutes in advance.

What might not be obvious is that you can tap the activity card to open its activity page and get more information. Each activity page has two tabs: Overview and Schedule. The overview tab has a description of the activity. The schedule shows the cards for all the times that this same activity is offered throughout the cruise, labeled with the location instead of the activity name.

Filtering the Daily Activities Tab

Straight talk: unless you really want to look at everything, the Filter is your friend on the Daily Activities tab. Yes, it is a couple of extra taps, but it’s a much more pleasant experience. Unfortunately, the filters do not persist if you close and reopen the app.

Venue Cards and Schedules

The remaining slider tabs are Dining & Lounges, Spa & Salon, Youth Clubs, Pools, Sports & Recreation, Shopping, Live Shows & Movies, and Guest Services; some of these are shown below as examples. All of these tabs will have a listing of venue cards, instead of activity cards. Venue cards have hours of operation and the location on the ship.

Like the activity card, you can tap on a venue card to open its page. Venue pages come in three basic flavors: overview and schedule, dining, and hours of operation only.

⭐ Overview and schedule-type pages are similar to the activity pages. The difference is the list of activity cards: it’s the scheduled activities for the space. Scroll down to see days in the future.

Activity pages and the overview-and-schedule type venue pages are different ways of listing the same information. It’s a bit like organizing a cookbook – do you make a chapter for vegetarian dishes and a section for appetizers, or a chapter for appetizers and a section for vegetarian dishes? If you find activity cards on an activity listing or a venue page schedule, they’ll be labeled with the name of the activity. But if you find them on the activity page schedule, they’ll be labeled with the name of the location that is hosting them. No matter where you find it, it’s the same activity, and tapping the heart will make it appear on your My Plans tab.

⭐ Dining pages show the hours for meal periods (breakfast, lunch, etc.) at each location. You may also see a link to view the menu, which is good for those of us who like to plan our dinner first thing in the morning. You’ll find dining-type cards in the Dining & Lounges tab, but you’ll also see them other places. For instance, tap More → Dining Schedule to see your full dining rotation for the whole cruise.

⭐ Some locations will have a hybrid page that shows both a menu and the overview and schedule tabs. That’s because these are multi-purpose locations. During the day, they’re used for activities, but in the evening they’re devoted to nightlife.

⭐ Hours of operation-only pages are for locations like shops and pools that are either open or shut; they don’t have a Schedule tab. You’ll quickly learn which venues have these kinds of pages and stop tapping on those cards.

❗Be aware! Venue cards may appear under more than one tab in the slider. For instance, the Oceaneer Lab/Club may appear under both the Youth Clubs tab and the Sports & Recreation tab. No matter where you find it, the venue’s schedule tab will show the same information. Non-sports activities won’t be filtered away because you started in the Sports & Recreation tab.

Use It Like A Pro

OK, here are six of my best tips for finding everything you want without wading through a ton of stuff that you don’t.

1️⃣ The schedule tab is your friend. Let’s say you added an 8:15 am showing of the Marvels in the Buena Vista Theatre, and when your alarm goes off you wonder why you did this to yourself on vacation. Tap the activity card in My Plans to quickly check the schedule; if there’s another showing that works for you then heart that one instead and go back to sleep.

2️⃣ For a character you want to meet, find a time the character appears in the Characters tab. Then drill down to the schedule and heart any appearances that might work with your plans. After you’ve successfully bagged a meet and a photo, you can cross off the others. Not all characters meet every single day, so you will want to do a quick skim through each day for new appearances.

3️⃣ To quickly get rid of all the Youth Club activities in the Daily Activities tab, use the Filter and select “Adult Exclusive” and “Fun for All Ages”

4️⃣ Kids’ club Open Houses are considered to be a single activity: Youth Activities Open House. If you’re interested in these, find the first Open House, then use the activity’s schedule to find all the Open Houses for Oceaneer Lab/Club, Edge, and Vibe.

5️⃣ Be wary of activities that have a colon in the name such as “Animation: Donald Duck” or “Anyone Can Cook: Apple Strudel”. You might think that checking this activity’s schedule will find all the Animation events, or all the Anyone Can Cook events. But it doesn’t work that way; the first part of the name is just a general category. If you want to find “Animation: Daisy Duck”, you’ll need to be clever and peruse the schedule for the D Lounge (or the equivalent space on your boat) since all the Animation activities are held there.

6️⃣ The “My Favorites” filter on the Daily Activities tab shows almost the same thing as the “My Plans” tab. But your reserved dining time will be missing and the view is much more compact. Screenshot the Daily Activities tab with the “My Favorites” filter on, and set it as your lock screen for the day. This way you can check your plans at any time without having to open your phone and tap around in the app.

My 12-day cruise cost me about $109 a day. See inside my 160-square-foot cabin, the most economical option on the ship.

• I went on a 12-day Holland America Line cruise and paid a little over $1,300 for my interior cabin.
• The cabin was an incredible value and I especially liked the storage and spacious shower.
• I'd book this room again — my cruise was so fun and busy that I barely spent time in it anyway. 

In a time of high inflation and stretched budgets, cruises reign supreme . Since most packages are pretty all-inclusive, you can pay for a week or more on a ship and then not spend another dime until you return.

I definitely had value in mind when I booked my recent 12-day cruise on the Holland America Line Rotterdam from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to the Panama Canal. I selected an interior cabin , the most economical option on the ship.

I booked directly with Holland America Line and paid $849 plus $460 for taxes, fees, and port charges — about $109 a day. The rate came with a $25 onboard credit and didn't include gratuities or add-ons like drink packages , specialty dining, WiFi, or excursions.

Overall, my room was one of the best values of the trip. Here's what it was like.

I booked an interior room on deck seven.

On this ship, interior rooms can range from 143 to 225 square feet. I chose a cabin on deck seven that was 160 square feet.

The location of my stateroom was convenient and quiet. My cabin was a quick two decks up to the areas I frequented most, the spa and its thermal suite, and the fitness center.

My cabin was generously sized.

The stateroom featured a small hallway with a bathroom on the right, and two wardrobes and a cabinet on the left.

The main area of my room contained the bed.

The hallway opened to a small rectangular space with a queen bed on the right flanked by two small nightstands, each with two drawers and a tall bottom shelf.

I had a vanity that could also be used as a desk.

To the right of the bed was a large desk/vanity with an ottoman that doubled as a seat and storage space for the bed's decorative throw pillows.

This area had even more storage: The desk had three spacious drawers.

My bed was across from a mounted TV and bar area.

At the foot of the bed was a wall-mounted interactive television with on-demand movies, programming, and multi-channel music.

Next to it, I had a fully stocked minibar area, including a cabinet with things like red wine, white wine, rocks glasses, a stainless steel ice bucket, and tongs.

There was so much storage space in the room.

The full-height wardrobe had 26 hangers, including 13 pant and 13 skirt hangers, two bottom shelves, and a full-length mirror on one door.

The second half-height wardrobe closet had 12 hangers, including four pant and eight skirt hangers, four bottom shelves, and a tie rack.

One closet contained a mini fridge.

The cabinet featured three compartments: the top where robes, beach towels, and a safe were stowed, the middle with the mini fridge, and the bottom with three deep drawers.

The safe was roomy, accommodating my 13.6-inch MacBook Air plus all of my other valuables and important travel documents.

The bathroom felt spacious and well-designed.

The bathroom layout was thoughtfully designed with three glass shelves for toiletries and a large-size vanity with an underneath storage ledge.

A roomy shower was the highlight of the bathroom.

The walk-in shower was complete with a shaving foot bar, a retractable clothesline, Elemis bath products, and an adjustable handheld shower.

There were also two grab bars for stepping into and out of the shower.

There were plenty of electrical outlets in the room, too.

The room had an abundance of power outlets where I could charge my gear.

On both sides of the bed were a type-B plug, mainly used in the US, Mexico, and Canada, and a USB port. The desk had a USB port, three type-B plugs, and two type-C plugs, mainly used in Europe, South America, and Asia.

The bathroom had one electrical outlet that could accommodate a US or European two-pronged plug.

The room service was impeccable, too.

There were two cabin stewards assigned to my room. They worked together to fully service my stateroom twice daily.

On embarkation day, I was able to request extra pillows and towels plus other preferences like turn-down service, which included a towel animal and Astor Chocolates on most nights.

Overall, I had such a fun experience on my cruise I didn't even spend much time in my stateroom.

There was so much to do on the Rotterdam that I barely spent time in my stateroom.

I spent many of my days relaxing in the expansive multiroom thermal suite, singing along at B.B. King's Blues Club, or sunbathing by the Lido Pool with a retractable roof.

The room was an excellent value, and I was glad I hadn't splurged on a balcony room or one with a window.

I worked on cruises for 3 years. Here are 6 things I'd never do on board.

• I used to work on cruises. After many days at sea, there are things I'd never do on a cruise .
• I never wear my room key around my neck and try to avoid misnaming the ship.
• I never buy the drink package or pay for meal upgrades in the main dining room.

I've sailed around the world as a cruise-ship employee , and now I enjoy cruising as a passenger.

I love the salty sea air, waking up in a new country, and lazy days by the pool, but a week at sea could get more complicated this year with cruises predicted to be in high demand .

While fighting a little harder to secure a prime seat on the pool deck, you may as well also avoid some rookie mistakes.

Here are six things I'd never do on a cruise after working on them for three years.

Pay for upgrades in the main dining room

Typically, main dining room meals are included in the cost of a cruise. But in recent years, it's become common for cruise lines to charge guests extra if they want to upgrade to "supplementary" items like lobster or certain steaks.

I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food.

So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.

Buy the drink package

I enjoy a piña colada by the pool or a Manhattan while listening to a jazz set after dinner. Even so, it doesn't make sense for me to pay in advance for 12 to 15 cocktails a day.

I've done the math on typical unlimited drink packages , and the cost simply isn't worth it for me.

This is especially true with a port-heavy itinerary. If I've gone ashore to explore all day, that means I'm not sidled up to the bar slurping down alcoholic slushies.

I prefer to buy as I go and take advantage of happy hour and other drink specials that are available on certain cruise lines. I also check the beverage policy in advance and bring on my own wine, if allowed.

Touch shared contact surfaces with my fingers

Fellow guests will never see me touching the elevator buttons with my fingertips. Knuckles and elbows do the trick.

Some cruise lines are better than others at wiping down commonly touched surfaces, but I don't take any chances. I avoid touching things others frequently touch, and I wash my hands frequently.

This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on. It's quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer . I'd definitely rather be safe than sorry.

Wear my room key around my neck

I never walk around the ship with my room key around my neck, and I especially never do this when on land.

There are two reasons for this. First, I see many passengers using the room keys dangling from their necks to flaunt their cruise loyalty status . It just looks pretentious.

The sophisticated cruisers with the highest status, with the most days at sea, never show off their fancy room keys.

That's because they know the more important reason — safety. In port, that room key bouncing off your chest looks like an invitation to be robbed. It screams, "I have money! Come and take it from me."

Misname the ship

English is a funny language that has its quirks. Naming conventions make that even more complicated.

Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, "Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess," or "I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam."

If you want to look like a savvy sailor, learn to drop the "the!"

Plan my port-day itinerary so tight that I may not make it back to the ship on time

Oh, the recurring nightmares I've had about not making it back to the ship on time during a port day.

I've never missed a sail away, but I have cut it too close at times and have had to run down a pier or two. Just recently, as a passenger, my taxi driver got lost returning our group to the port at night.

When I realized how late we were going to be, I forked over $8 per minute to be connected with the ship. I pleaded with them to wait for us. It was a sprint through the port to get back on and we received quite a scolding from the first officer.

That time, we got lucky. In the future, I'll be giving myself more time than I think I need to make it back.

Steelers post-draft depth chart: 3 potential Day 1 starters shake up roster

PITTSBURGH — There were times not long ago when there was no chance at all for a Pittsburgh Steelers rookie to be a starter.

It was unheard of for one to start the opener. There was a gap of 13 years without a defensive rookie starting a season opener from 2001 (Kendrell Bell) to 2014 (Ryan Shazier).

Things have changed in that department recently — to a degree. Pat Freiermuth , Najee Harris , Kendrick Green and Dan Moore Jr. all started the opener in 2021, as did Devin Bush in 2019. George Pickens did so in 2022 (although he came off the bench in five games that season). But that’s it over the past five years. First-round picks Kenny Pickett (2022) and Broderick Jones (2023) had to sit and wait.

After this weekend’s draft haul, if the Steelers don’t have three rookies in the starting lineup, it might be considered a failure. Offensive tackle Troy Fautanu , center Zach Frazier and receiver Roman Wilson — the first three picks — have not only the pedigree but also somewhat of a clear path to start immediately.

Steelers — even Mike Tomlin — are thrilled with their draft class (as they should be)

The Steelers added seven draft picks and five undrafted rookies to their roster over the weekend. They still have a couple more spots to fill, one of which might be a veteran receiver, but this group will make up most of what they take into the season opener in early September.

Let’s take a look at how each position stands after the draft. Asterisks denote rookies.

Quarterback (4)

Starter:  Russell Wilson Backups:   Justin Fields , Kyle Allen , John Rhys Plumlee *

The Steelers did all of their legwork at the position via free agency and trade, adding Wilson, Fields and Allen in what was a total revamp of the quarterbacks group from Pickett, Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph .

There was an outside chance the Steelers would add a quarterback late in the draft, but they decided to sign an undrafted free agent, Plumlee from Central Florida through Ole Miss. Plumlee is nothing more than a rented arm for training camp. The Steelers keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man but rarely, if ever, have a fourth on the practice squad.

With Wilson the starter and Fields the backup, the biggest question is whether the Steelers will try to extend Fields before the start of the season. They won’t pick up his $25 million fifth-year option, so it’s either sign him to a lesser extension as a backup or allow him to hit free agency next year.

Running back (6)

Starter:  Najee Harris Backups:   Jaylen Warren ,  Cordarrelle Patterson ,  Aaron Shampklin ,  Jack Colletto (FB), Daijun Edwards *

This position hasn’t changed, but it very well could be the biggest winner beyond the offensive line. Harris has quietly put together three consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. With Arthur Smith’s penchant for running the ball, Warren should provide a good second part of a one-two punch, with the veteran Patterson being a jack-of-all-trades — he is mostly a kick return specialist, but he’s two years removed from totaling 1,166 yards from scrimmage out of the backfield. He gives the Steelers another receiving option at the position.

Wide receiver (10)

Starters: George Pickens, Van Jefferson , Roman Wilson* Backups: Calvin Austin III , Quez Watkins ,  Denzel Mims ,  Dez Fitzpatrick ,  Marquez Callaway ,  Duece Watts , Keilahn Harris

Wilson was a steal in the third round and a much-needed addition after the departures of Diontae Johnson and Allen Robinson. Wilson is mostly a slot guy who catches the ball between the numbers and down the field, but he can play on the outside as well.

Though Wilson fills a need, the Steelers still have to address the position in free agency or with a trade. Jefferson had one good year but isn’t going to scare any defenses. Austin has potential, but we haven’t seen to what extent. Watkins is a role player. You have to ask: Is there anybody on the roster who is going to prevent constant double-teams of Pickens? Right now, Jefferson is penciled in at that position, but surely that will change.

Tight end (5)

Starter:  Pat Freiermuth Backups:   Darnell Washington ,  Connor Heyward ,  MyCole Pruitt ,  Rodney Williams

There is no difference in this group from a month ago, and Pruitt is the only change from last year. Pruitt played for Smith in Tennessee and Atlanta as an all-purpose blocker and receiver. Interestingly, the group has five styles of tight end, with Freiermuth leading the way. Freiermuth hasn’t lived up to his lofty draft position yet, but you can make every excuse in the book as to why — injuries, quarterback, offensive coordinator.

Offensive line (16)

Starters: LT Troy Fautanu*, LG Isaac Seumalo , C Zach Frazier*, RG James Daniels , RT Broderick Jones Backups: G/C Nate Herbig , C Ryan McCollum , OT Dan Moore Jr., OT/G Spencer Anderson , OG Joey Fisher , OG Anderson Hardy , OT Dylan Cook , OT Kellen Diesch , OT Devery Hamilton , OL Mason McCormick *, OL Tyler Beach

The Steelers used three of their first five picks on the offensive line for the first time since 1976 and their first two for the first time since David DeCastro and Mike Adams in 2012. They wanted to build out their offensive line with high-end talent, and that’s what they’ve done the past two years with Fautanu, Frazier and Jones in the draft and Seumalo in free agency.

Coach Mike Tomlin said Fautanu will play tackle but was noncommittal about which side. All of Fautanu’s college experience was on the left side, and Jones impressed at right tackle last year, so why not keep him there? Though it is all set up for Fautanu to start Week 1, the Steelers still have Moore on the roster, who has started 49 games in three NFL seasons. It might sound unlikely, but he did hold off Jones last year, so it is always possible. Either way, the group has a high pedigree and a lot of upside.

Defensive line (11)

Starters:  Cameron Heyward ,  Larry Ogunjobi ,  Keeanu Benton Backups: Dean Lowry , DeMarvin Leal , Isaiahh Loudermilk , Montravius Adams , Jonathan Marshall , Breiden Fehoko , Jacob Slade , Logan Lee *

The Steelers didn’t add much in the draft at a needed position. They drafted Lee late, but he has special teams written all over him in Week 1. The Steelers have a couple of stars in Heyward and Benton, a guy with potential in Ogunjobi and a group of average role players.

The group is dependent on Heyward, who will turn 35 next week and is coming off one of his worst seasons, but you can blame that on a training camp injury he had to fight through all year. His two sacks were his fewest since becoming a starter in 2013.

Final 53: Heyward, Ogunjobi, Benton, Lowry, Leal, Loudermilk, Adams, Lee

Outside linebacker (7)

Starters:  T.J. Watt ,  Alex Highsmith Backups: Nick Herbig , Kyron Johnson , David Perales , Jeremiah Moon , Julius Welschof * (roster exempt)

When you pay Watt and Highsmith $180 million total, there’s not much room to add. They combined for 26 sacks, and both played more than 80 percent of the snaps in 2023. Herbig is in the second year of his rookie contract and will fill in on both sides. The rest of the unit is nothing more than warm bodies.

Inside linebacker (7)

Starters:  Patrick Queen ,  Elandon Roberts Backups: Cole Holcomb , Mark Robinson , Tyler Murray , Payton Wilson *, Jacoby Windmon *

The unit got markedly better over the past month with the signing of Queen and the drafting of Wilson, a late third-round pick. Wilson could contribute and start immediately, but his injury history is a concern. Holcomb’s health is still a question mark after he suffered a serious leg injury last season, but at least the Steelers have options now compared with recent years. They could add a guy like Kwon Alexander down the road, as they did last year, but that might depend on how Holcomb is progressing.

Final 53: Queen, Roberts, Robinson, Wilson, Holcomb (PUP)

Cornerback (10)

Starters:  Joey Porter Jr. ,  Donte Jackson Backups: Cory Trice Jr. , Luq Barcoo , Kalon Barnes , Thomas Graham Jr. , Darius Rush (slot), Josiah Scott (slot), Ryan Watts *, Beanie Bishop *

If there is one position on the defense that is a question mark, it is cornerback. Porter is a star in the making, and the Steelers continue to talk up Jackson, whom they acquired in the trade of Johnson to the Carolina Panthers .

Besides that, it’s anybody’s guess. Trice has upside but missed all of last year with a knee injury and can’t be counted on to stay healthy or even perform. Rush is another youngster who has potential, but that’s about it. Watts and Bishop were added over the weekend, but it’s hard to count on late-round rookies or UDFAs. Look for the Steelers to add a veteran corner, perhaps bringing back Patrick Peterson , before the season starts. It’s the only thing that makes sense right now.

Final 53: Porter, Jackson, Trice, Barcoo, Watts, Rush

Starters:  Minkah Fitzpatrick ,  DeShon Elliott Backups:   Damontae Kazee , Trenton Thompson , Miles Killebrew , Jalen Elliott , Nathan Meadors

Fitzpatrick leads the way. It is going to be interesting to see how they use DeShon Elliott, a free-agent signing. He could be a box safety who moves to the slot to handle the bigger tight ends, especially with no clear-cut slot option on the roster. Fitzpatrick dealt with injuries and ineffectiveness last year. Adding Elliott to go along with Kazee could help that.

Final 53: Fitzpatrick, DeShon Elliott, Kazee, Killebrew, Thompson

Specialists (4)

Starters:  K Chris Boswell, P Cameron Johnston, LS Christian Kuntz , KR Cordarrelle Patterson, PR Calvin Austin III Backups: K Matthew Wright, KR Quez Watkins

The Steelers are set here, as they added Johnston in free agency and Patterson as their kick returner. Boswell, Johnston and Kuntz are making more money than the entire quarterbacks group in 2023, which tells you the Steelers believe in their guys.

Both picks made by Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell have been used to add cornerbacks. Both Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. are among the top players at their position in the class.

As a result of the secondary focus, the Lions could have an open approach to the third and final day of the event.

Here are 10 players that would fit the Lions on Day 3, sorted by their projected round.

Fourth Round

Note: The Lions do not currently own a fourth-round selection. In order to acquire these players, the Lions would have to trade up.

Javon Baker, WR, UCF

Baker is one of the most explosive players in the draft. A first-team All-Big 12 player for the Knights last year, he logged over 1,000 receiving yards. He fits the big-body need the Lions have at 6-foot-1, and excels on contested catches.

He'll need polish in his routes to reach his potential at the NFL level, but there's plenty to like about the physicality he plays with. The Lions have made a habit of drafting players with similar styles to Baker's, regardless of position.

Mason McCormick, IOL, South Dakota State

Even though he played at the FCS level, McCormick was one of the best run-blockers in all of college football, based on Pro Football Focus' grades. He had a run-blocking mark of 90.8, as he established dominance in his fits and routinely worked up to the second level.

McCormick was expected to be a Day 2 pick, so plenty of teams could look to move up and land him early in the fourth round.

Fifth Round

Lions' pick: 164

Gabriel Murphy, EDGE, UCLA

The knock on Murphy is his arm-length, which can be detrimental for a pass-rusher looking to be successful at the NFL level. However, he put on a nice showing at the combine, with the second-highest vertical jump at his position and a 4.68 40-yard dash.

Murphy did a good job of stopping the run last year with 16 tackles for loss, and added eight sacks to assert himself in that aspect. He could be given time to develop behind the likes of Josh Paschal and James Houston, but also has the traits to compete for a spot right away.

Ethan Driskell, OT, Marshall

An imposing figure standing in at 6-foot-8, Driskell is an intriguing prospect from the Group of Five level. He allowed just 20 pressures on 508 true pass-blocking snaps last season for the Thundering Herd, via Pro Football Focus.

A background in basketball is shown in his footwork, as he displays a strong ability to always be in the right position. With his size and footwork, he could develop into a steal, with time to grow behind the Lions' tandem of Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell.

Will Reichard, K, Alabama

The Lions have struggled to find a consistent answer at kicker since Holmes and Campbell took over in 2021. Right now, Michael Badgley is the lone option on the roster. Though the organization likes Badgley, Holmes has voiced a desire to bring in competition.

Reichard was one of the best at the position throughout his collegiate career, and has a history of nailing clutch kicks. He hit 10 kicks of 50-plus yards throughout his career, and never struggled with the routine kicks. With the Lions ' recent history of drafting Alabama players, it would only be fitting if Holmes picked their all-time leader in points.

Sixth Round

Lions' picks: 201, 205

Sione Vaki, S, Utah

Vaki may be the most popular potential fit for the Lions in the late rounds. He took a top-30 visit to the organization, and is viewed as a scheme and style fit based on his play style.

With experience playing on both sides of the ball for the Utes, he'd undoubtedly be an instant contributor on special teams. He'd also provide much-needed safety depth, as the Lions only have three true safeties on roster.

Cornelius Johnson, WR, Michigan

If the Lions wait to add a receiver, Johnson might be a solid answer within the final two rounds. His production was limited in Michigan's run-heavy offense, but there's a lot to like about what he did in his opportunities, as well as his play-style.

Johnson has the frame to be a downfield threat at the next level, and had a nice showing at the East-West Shrine Bowl. His abilities are reminiscent of another former Michigan wideout in Nico Collins, who had a huge year for the Houston Texans last year.

Khristian Boyd, DT, Northern Iowa

Boyd is a small-school prospect who the Lions have shown interest in, as he took a top-30 visit to the organization during the offseason. He wasn't invited to the NFL combine, and was forced to show off his skills at a separate pro day where he was unable to run due to a groin injury.

Boyd was a team captain for the Panthers in 2023, and logged 3.5 sacks playing the nose tackle position. The Lions have D.J. Reader, who will handle the majority of the work at that position, along with Brodric Martin. So, Boyd would be afforded time to develop.

Seventh Round

Lions' pick: 249

Trevor Keegan, IOL, MIchigan

Keegan was one of the driving forces who spurned the NFL Draft in order to help lead Michigan to the 2023 national championship. He was a consistent player despite not reaching the elite level of production in either the run-or-pass-blocking categories.

Still, there's a lot to like about the potential fit between he and the Lions based on his mentality. He was a key part of the Wolverines' ability to dominate opponents on the ground. As a result, Keegan would jell nicely with the culture, and provide depth behind Graham Glasgow and Kevin Zeitler.

Trey Taylor, S, Air Force

Taylor is an intriguing safety prospect who has all the skills to be a core special teamer. He had good production at the collegiate level, intercepting six passes.

A big part of his success comes from instincts, as he is not viewed as a prospect with elite speed. Still, he plays fast and knows where to be, which would allow him to be a threat in the secondary.
