Journey's End

By r.c. sherriff, journey's end quotes and analysis.

"I hope you get better luck than I did with my last officer. He got lumbago the first night and went home. Now he's got a job lecturing young officers on 'Life in the Front Line'." Captain Hardy, Act I, p. 10

Speaking with Osborne, Hardy mocks the common schemes that officers employ to leave the war. In this passage, he speaks of an officer of his who left because of a back problem and later claimed to be a combat expert, when in reality he was barely able to face life in the trenches.

"Well, if you want to get the best pace out of a cockroach, dip it in whiskey—makes 'em go like hell!" Captain Hardy, Act I, p. 15

In this quote, Hardy gives Osborne advice on the soldiers' pastime of betting and racing cockroaches, a statement that stands in contrast to the discussion they have had about Stanhope's PTSD-related alcoholism and the looming threat of a rumored German attack. The passage is significant because it represents one of many instances of officers using dark humor to deal with the bleak circumstances in which they live.

"You see, he's been out here a long time. It—it tells on a man—rather badly." Osborne, Act I, p. 19

In this passage, Osborne tries to warn Raleigh that his heroic image of Stanhope may not match Stanhope's present, battle-addled condition. The difficulty Osborne has in articulating the statement is significant, as it speaks to how Osborne would not like to undermine Stanhope's authority by spreading doubt about his mental condition, while he nonetheless wants the bright-eyed Raleigh not to grow disillusioned.

Osborne: Small boys at school generally have their heroes. Stanhope: Yes. Small boys at school do. Osborne: Often it goes on as long as — Stanhope: — as long as the hero's a hero. Osborne: It often goes on all through life. Osborne and Stanhope, Act I, p. 30

In this private conversation on the subject of Raleigh's idolization of Stanhope, Osborne and Stanhope touch on the theme of heroism. Having looked up to Stanhope at school, Raleigh and Raleigh's sister turned him into a hero. However, Stanhope reveals in this dialogue his concern that Raleigh will see Stanhope for who he is truly is, having been damaged by the effects of war. Osborne sees things differently, and has faith that Raleigh will continue to see him as a hero, despite Stanhope's drinking and temper.

"She doesn't know that if I went up those steps into the front line—without being doped up with whiskey—I'd go mad with fright." Stanhope, Act I, p. 31

In this passage, Stanhope confides to Osborne that he drinks constantly in order to overcome his fear. He is concerned that Raleigh will report in a letter to his sister, to whom Stanhope is engaged, that he drinks constantly. He worries that she will not understand the brutal conditions he endures, and how he relies on drinking in order to calm his addled nerves.

"I believe Raleigh'll go on liking you—and looking up to you—through everything. There's something very deep, and rather fine, about hero-worship." Osborne, Act I, p. 33

In this passage, Osborne repeats his earlier suggestion that Raleigh's admiration for Stanhope will persist, despite the war-damaged person Stanhope has become. This quote is significant because it reveals Osborne's wisdom; as Stanhope will see when he hears Raleigh's letter, Osborne's prediction bears true.

"Tell me, mother, what is that That looks like strawberry jam? Hush, hush, my dear; 'tis only Pa Run over by a tram—" Trotter, Act II, Scene 2, p. 62

In this passage, Trotter blithely recites a grim rhyme about a mother reassuring her daughter at the sight of her husband being run over by a tram. This passage is significant because it speaks to the play's thematic concern with repression, revealing how soldiers use gallows humor to remain in high spirits when faced with the grim reality of war.

"To forget, you little fool—to forget! D'you understand? To Forget! You think there's no limit to what a man can bear?" Stanhope, Act III, Scene 2, p. 85

Raleigh does not feel like partaking in the higher quality food and champagne that celebrates the successful raid because he is stricken by sadness that Osborne did not make it back alive with him. Stanhope rebukes him, clarifying that he isn't the only one who cares that Osborne died, and that he drinks not to celebrate but to cope. This passage is significant because he finally admits to this weakness to Raleigh, risking that Raleigh will pass the revelation on to his sister, to whom Stanhope is engaged.

Raleigh: Hullo— Dennis— Stanhope: Well, Jimmy—( he smiles )—you got one quickly. Stanhope and Raleigh, Act III, Scene 3, p.93

After Stanhope learns that Raleigh has had his spine broken by a piece of shrapnel, he orders the sergeant-major to bring Raleigh back to him in the dugout. Lying in Osborne's former bed, Raleigh momentarily regains consciousness. In this passage, the two men greet each other with their first names. Although Raleigh has used Stanhope's first name a number of times, this is the first time that Stanhope calls Raleigh by his. This passage is significant because it reveals a tenderness between the characters, reminding the audience of the human lives that soldiers live outside of war.

" A tiny sound comes from where RALEIGH is lying—something between a sob and a moan. " Stage direction, Act III, Scene 3, p. 94

After Stanhope leaves Raleigh's bedside to fetch a candle, Raleigh emits a small, ambiguous sound. The sound turns out to be the last sound Raleigh makes before he dies—his final breath.

Graduation is undoubtedly a significant life event. So here are some post-worthy quotes to use as you (or your friend or family member) enter the next phase of life.

1. “The heights by great men reached and kept/ Were not attained by sudden flight,/ But they, while their companions slept,/ Were toiling upward in the night.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Share this quote with someone who persevered through a tough educational challenge.

2. “It has always seemed strange to me that in our endless discussions about education so little stress is laid on the pleasure of becoming an educated person, the enormous interest it adds to life. To be able to be caught up into the world of thought – that is to be educated.” – Edith Hamilton

Perhaps the graduate may not feel the “pleasure of becoming an educated person” so soon after graduation.

3. “You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.” – Tom Brokaw

Sometimes the best part about ending a phase of life is looking forward to the next one.

4. “Instruction ends in the schoolroom, but education ends only with life.” – Frederick W. Robertson

Sometimes the most important lessons are learned outside the classroom.

Some count the days until retirement, and others look at it with trepidation. Here are quotes that describe both types of outlooks.

5. “At every point in the human journey we find that we have to let go in order to move forward; and letting go means dying a little. In the process we are being created anew, awakened afresh to the source of our being.” – Kathleen R. Fischer

Surprisingly, you may find it hard to let go of your job. So here are some words of encouragement for those who face retirement with trepidation.

6. “Getting something done is an accomplishment; getting something done right is an achievement.” – Unknown

Are you celebrating someone who contributed significantly to your organization? Here’s a quote for someone who always went above and beyond.

7. “What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

As you reflect on your career and look forward to your future endeavors, remember that WHO you are is just as important as what you have accomplished (or will accomplish.)

There are a lot of quotes about embarking on a trip or adventure. However, few can describe the bittersweet end of a journey. So, here are some end-of-a-journey quotes that may help explain how you feel.

8. “Each difficult moment has the potential to open my eyes and open my heart.” – Myla Kabat-Zinn

Sometimes trips are difficult and painful. This quote describes how to look on the bright side of such experiences.

9. “Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

You've likely seen this quote on Instagram posts or used by travel bloggers. Yes, this quote is overused. However, it may perfectly describe your love of adventure.

10. “I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” – Mary Anne Radmacher

We love this quote! International travel – especially to countries significantly different from yours – can irrevocably change you.

11. “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain

We have all had that painful travel experience. Hopefully, yours changed you for the better.

12. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by” — Robert Frost

This quote is from Robert Frost’s famous poem “The Road Not Traveled.” It’s often used at graduations but could work for any journey.

13. “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” – John A. Shedd

Please accept our condolences if you recently lost a loved one. You may be looking for quotes about death for the funeral slideshow or service, so here are some to consider.

Turn to Cake’s blog for additional help. These quotes might tell you if your loved one traveled a difficult road. And, of course, you might need help writing the eulogy for the service.

14. “It is the will of God and Nature that these mortal bodies be laid aside, when the soul is to enter into real life; ’tis rather an embryo state, a preparation for living; a man is not completely born until he be dead: Why then should we grieve that a new child is born among the immortals?” – Benjamin Franklin

This quote is perfect for someone who needs reassurance that their loved one is enjoying the afterlife.

15. “There are things that we don’t want to happen but have to accept, things we don’t want to know but have to learn, and people we can’t live without but have to let go.” – Unknown

Some end-of-journey quotes focus on the deceased, while this encourages those left behind.

16. “For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity.” – William Penn

Here’s another quote about continuing life’s journey after death.

18. “I can assure you that those who have already passed have not only made it to the Other Side, but are in a state of bliss.” – Sylvia Browne

Sylvia Browne wrote these reassuring words in the Journal of Love & Healing.

Thornton Wilder was an American playwright, most famous for his work “Our Town.”

20. “Death is nothing at all,/ I have only slipped into the next room/ I am I and you are you/ whatever we were to each other, that we are still.” – Henry Scott Holland

These beautiful lines open Henry Scott Holland’s poem “All Is Well.” You may consider using this piece during your loved one’s service or funeral slideshow.

21. “Your body is away from me/ but there is a window open/ from my heart to yours./ From this window, like the moon/ I keep sending news secretly.” – Rumi

Can poems be considered quotes? We think so. This short piece is “The Window” by Rumi. Readers will be comforted by the idea that their loved one is on the ultimate journey.

22. “The journey doesn’t end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take” – J.R.R. Tolkien

This is the second quote by Tolkien on our list.

23. “For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one” – Khalil Gibran

Khalil Gibran is the author of “The Prophet.”

24. “Only a moment you stayed, but what an imprint your footprints have left on our hearts” – Dorothy Ferguson

Are you saying goodbye to someone who wasn’t long on this Earth? Here is a quote to describe how you feel about your loved one’s passing.

25. “Perhaps passing through the gates of death is like passing quietly through the gate in a pasture fence. On the other side, you keep walking, without the need to look back. No shock, no drama, just the lifting of a plank or two in a simple wooden gate in a clearing. Neither pain, nor floods of light, nor great voices, but just the silent crossing of a meadow” – Mark Helprin

This quote could also offer great comfort to someone suffering a loss.

26. “Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation” – Rumi

This quote could be used for many different purposes – for someone retiring, moving, – or for someone who passed.

The End? Or a New Beginning?

We hope these quotes offer comfort and peace to those of you who are facing a significant transition. You may also look for poems or songs about journeys and change. Even if these words are no comfort, you may feel some solace knowing that others have faced similar difficulties.

a journey's end quotes

It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.

Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.

To finish the moment, to find the journey's end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom.

Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.

Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers. The mind can never break off from the journey.

a journey's end quotes

Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends.

We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.

Find the journey's end in every step.

Never make your home in a place. Make a home for yourself inside your own head. You'll find what you need to furnish it - memory, friends you can trust, love of learning, and other such things. That way it will go with you wherever you journey.

Does the road wind up-hill all the way? Yes, to the very end.

They spoke less and less between them until at last they were silent altogether as is often the way with travelers approaching the end of a journey.

To live the greatest number of good hours is wisdom.

. . . long journeys are strange things: if we were always to continue in the same mind we are in at the end of a journey, we should never stir from the place we were then in . . .

Does the road wind up-hill all the way? Yes, to the very end. Will the day's journey take the whole long day? From morn to night, my friend.

Nothing is so awesomely unfamiliar as the familiar that discloses itself at the end of a journey. Nothing shakes the heart so much as meeting-far, far away-what you last met at home.

The years seem to rush by now, and I think of death as a fast approaching end of a journey-double and treble reason for loving as well as working while it is day.

Though the most beautiful creature were waiting for me at the end of a journey or a walk; though the carpet were of silk, the curtains of the morning clouds; the chairs and sofa stuffed with cygnet's down; the food manna, the wine beyond claret, the window opening on Winander Mere, I should not feel -or rather my happiness would not be so fine, as my solitude is sublime.

long journeys are strange things: if we were always to continue in the same mind we are in at the end of a journey, we should never stir from the place we were then in: but Providence in kindness to us causes us to forget it. It is much the same with lying-in women. Heaven permits this forgetfulness that the world may be peopled, and that folks may take journeys to Provence.

My father was my mother's home, the one place that she knew she could be safe. It was all a journey of faith for him, and I think he felt like if you don't find more love and understanding at the end of a journey like that, then you are lost - and if you only find hate and resentment, it will destroy you. I believe that.

10 Best Anime Series Every Fan of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Needs to Watch

  • There are plenty of anime that are great for fans of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End .
  • Some anime are great for offering similar takes on adventuring through fantasy worlds as Frieren does.
  • Others are great for the overlap they have with Frieren 's writing style and overall themes.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is easily one of the biggest anime of the past few years. Not only does it have gorgeous art, animation, and overall direction, but its straightforward take on the fantasy genre, combined with intelligent and emotionally resonant writing, made it a major hit among fans and critics alike to a degree that very few anime have ever managed to achieve.

The first season of Frieren received unanimous praise from fans and critics alike. It’s currently unknown when Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End will return for a second season, if at all, but fortunately, there are plenty of anime that fans of the series can watch.

As unique a series as it may be, there are plenty of great anime that overlap with Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End in terms of themes, characters, and overall quality ; a few anime, in particular, are especially worth highlighting, and any fan of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is sure to get a lot out of them, even if it’s not the same experience.

10 Best Fantasy Anime Every Lord of the Rings Fan Needs to Watch

Wandering witch captures the same pure essence of traveling as frieren, anime series by c2c; based on the light novel by jogi shiraishi.

C2C’s Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina stars Elaina the Ashen Witch, a young witch who travels the world in the hopes of living a life of adventure like her idol, the great witch Niké. Elaina takes it upon herself to not interfere in anything she witnesses on her travels, no matter how terrible something may be, but there are occasions where, at the very least, Elaina’s passivity does deeply affect her and force her to question her resolve.

Wandering Witch isn’t that well-known of an anime, but it’s still a great recommendation for fans of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End . Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina is, like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End , a thoughtful story of a magical being traveling across the world , but Elaina is a far more selfish person than Frieren, so it creates a different sort of traveling story, especially when her selfishness ends up hurting herself and others. Overall, Wandering Witch has the same sort of aesthetic as Frieren , but adds a unique-enough flavor to create a different experience, so it’s plenty worth checking out.

Kinos Journey Highlights The Beauty & Danger Of The World, Just Like Frieren

Anime series by acgt; based on the light novel by keiichi sigsawa.

ACGT’s Kino’s Journey—the Beautiful World— is about Kino, a young girl traveling the world with no one by her side except her talking motorcycle, Hermes. Kino makes it a rule not to stay in one place longer than three days in two nights to keep herself from getting too attached, and with how dangerous some of the places she visits can be, she always makes sure to keep a variety of weapons with her, most notably her .44 single-action revolver the “Cannon” and her .22 automatic pistol the “Woodsman”.

Similar to Wander Witch: The Journey of Elaina , Kino’s Journey—the Beautiful World— is great for anyone who was a fan of the adventuring aspect of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End . Not only do both stories have characters going on episodic adventures around the world, but the dark and fantastical nature of the places in Kino’s Journey—the Beautiful World— always adds something new to each story , whether it’s purely in aesthetic or in the themes the audience is expected to contemplate. Adventure is always used for thought-provoking storytelling, so that makes it perfect for fans of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End .

Mushishi Is Another Great Anime About Supernatural Good Samaritans

Anime series by artland; based on the manga by yuki urushibara.

Artland’s Mushishi is an episodic anime set vaguely in 19th-century Japan where people are constantly plagued by ethereal beings called Mushi. As one of the few people who can see Mushi, series protagonist Ginko has taken it upon himself to research Mushi and aid those who suffer because of them whenever he comes across them in his travels.

From start to finish, Mushishi is an anime that does a great job of playing into the same core aesthetic of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End . The element of traveling through a supernatural setting is one thing, but Mushishi being an episodic story of a supernatural good samaritan has a clear overlap with Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End , although Mushishi is the far more episodic story of the two. Nevertheless, both anime excellently play into the idea of good people just trying to help others, so any fan of one is sure to get a lot out of the other.

To Your Eternity Is Another Great Story About The Struggles Of Immortality

Anime series by drive; based on the manga by yoshitoki oima.

Drive’s To Your Eternity opens with a mysterious being called the Beholder releasing an orb into the world that takes on the form of anything that dies around it. The orb eventually becomes an immortal being named Fushi, and through his travels, he constantly befriends new people he’s always fated to outlive and must slowly come to understand why living that sort of life is so tragic.

Unlike some other anime, To Your Eternity ’s overlap with Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is through one of the more tragic elements of its story. Both To Your Eternity and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End revolve around nigh-immortal beings dealing with the reality of outliving the people closest to them , and sure enough, both anime use it to tell tragic and bittersweet stories from start to finish. The emotional beats of Frieren ’s writing have always been one of its biggest draws, and anyone who’s a fan of that is sure to be a fan of To Your Eternity .

Bocchi The Rock! Is Another Gorgeous Anime From Frierens Director

Anime series by cloverworks; based on the manga by aki hamazi.

CloverWorks’ Bocchi the Rock! stars Hitori Gotoh, a girl with crippling social anxiety who learned to play guitar in the hopes of using it to make friends, although her efforts never once managed to bear fruit. One day, however, Hitori is recruited to be the new guitarist in the band Kessoku Band, and as Hitori - now with the nickname Bocchi - commits herself to the band, she’ll find herself slowly but surely gaining the exact life she hoped for when she first started learning the guitar.

Bocchi the Rock! is a completely different story from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End , but that doesn’t mean fans of the latter shouldn’t watch it. Both anime were directed by anime director Keiichiro Saito, and sure enough, both Bocchi the Rock! and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End feature some of the best animation and overall direction of any anime that’s come out within the past few years. Keiichiro Saito is one of the best directors to come out of anime in the past few years, and if anyone wants to see what else he’s capable of, there’s no better anime to watch than Bocchi the Rock!

Spice And Wolf Excellently Makes The Mundane Entertaining

Anime series by brain's base & passione; based on the light novel by isuna hasekura, spice and wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf (2024).

Cast Jun Fukuyama, Ami Koshimizu

Release Date April 2, 2024

Genres Drama, Adventure, Anime

Main Genre Anime

Rating TV-14

Spice and Wolf is a low-fantasy anime about a traveling merchant named Kraft Lawrence who, one day, comes across a woman with wolf ears and a tail sleeping in his cart. The woman introduces herself as a harvest goddess named Holo, and after Lawrence helps Holo leave the confines of the village where they met, the two embark on a journey to bring Holo back to her birthplace while doing merchant work whenever and wherever it might come up.

Spice and Wolf is a very different sort of fantasy series from Frieren , but their similarities become readily apparent in their writing. In addition to characters having dry wit and largely unexaggerated dialogue, Spice and Wolf , much like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End , is much more focused on the minute details of worldbuilding than it is on the action , specifically the inner workings of economics and trading, and the execution always keeps it from being boring. It's a perfect anime for fans of Frieren , and with the Spice and Wolf reboot , now's the perfect time for someone to start watching.

Magis Worldbuilding & Magic Are Perfect For Frieren Fans

Anime series by a-1 pictures; based on the manga by shinobu ohtaka, magi: the labyrinth of magic (2012).

Cast Erica Mendez, Lucien Dodge, Cristina Valenzuela, Erik Scott Kimerer, Darrel Guilbeau, Matthew Mercer, Stephanie Sheh

Genres Animation, Action, Fantasy

Streaming Service(s) Crunchyroll

Franchise(s) Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Writers Hiroyuki Yoshino

Directors Naotaka Hayashi, Koji Masunari

Main Genre Fantasy

Creator(s) Shinobu Ohtaka

A-1 Pictures’ Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic depicts an Arabian Nights -style fantasy world where people can challenge mysterious dungeons for untold wealth and power that can change the world. Among the people who have a go at this are the young pair of Aladdin and Alibaba, and while the two of them originally just wanted to go on an adventure, they soon find themselves wrapped up in one major conspiracy after another that are all poised to upend everything they know about their world.

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic ’s flavor of fantasy is very different from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End , but fans of Frieren can still get a lot out of it. Much like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End , Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic has incredibly intricate worldbuilding through its political elements and its highly-developed magic system , two things that are essential parts of Frieren ’s writing. It’s more lighthearted than some of its contemporaries, but with that sort of writing, it’s a perfect recommendation for fans of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End .

Violet Evergarden Is A Beautiful Exploration Into Humanity

Anime series by kyoto animation; based on the light novel by kana akatsuki, violet evergarden.

Cast Ben Pronsky, Christine Marie Cabanos, Tony Azzolino, Kyle McCarley, Reba Buhr, Erika Harlacher

Release Date January 11, 2018

Genres Drama

Streaming Service(s) Netflix

Franchise(s) Violet Evergarden

Writers Taaki Suzuki, Tatsuhiko Urahata, Reiko Yoshida

Directors Taichi Ishidate, Haruka Fujita

Main Genre Animation

Creator(s) Kana Akatsuki

The titular hero of Kyoto Animation’s Violet Evergarden is a former orphan turned soldier who spent her entire life fighting in a war that’s only now come to an end. Now needing a new purpose in life, Violet takes up a job as a special type of ghostwriter called an Auto Memory Doll in the hopes that writing for others will help better understand people, and she especially hopes it will help her understand why her commanding officer told her he loved her before he died.

Kyoto Animation is famous for its emotionally driven anime, and Violet Evergarden is easily one of its best. From start to finish, Violet Evergarden does an excellent job of depicting its hero’s struggles with learning what it means to be human in an emotionally poignant fashion , something that, of course, is at the core of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End ’s overarching narrative. Add in the consistently gorgeous visuals and overall direction, and Violet Evergarden hits nearly all the same aesthetics that made Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End such a hit.

Delicious In Dungeon Is The Perfect Fantasy To Complement Frieren

Anime series by studio trigger; based on the manga by ryoko kui, delicious in dungeon.

Cast Asuna Tomari, Hiroshi Naka, Kentarou Kumagai, Sayaka Senbongi

Release Date January 1, 2024

Genres Cooking, Comedy, Fantasy

Franchise(s) Delicious in Dungeon

Writers Kimiko Ueno, Ryoko Kui

Directors Yoshihiro Miyajima

In Studio Trigger’s hit fantasy anime Delicious in Dungeon , the adventure party of series protagonist Laios is wiped out by a dragon, with Laios’ sister, Falin, even being eaten alive. Laios and what remains of his party need to hurry back through the dungeon to revive Falin, but they lack the funds for the journey and have no time to gather them up. To deal with the situation, Laios convinces everyone, much to their disgust, to eat the monsters they encounter in the dungeon, something Laios is all but stated to have just been looking for an excuse to do.

Delicious in Dungeon is great for fans of Frieren thanks to largely being its opposite. While they’re both largely straightforward fantasy anime, Delicious in Dungeon , while not wholly unserious, has a far more comedic approach to fantasy than Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End , so the two can be seen as two sides of the same coin and of equal value to anime fans looking for something different from isekai and power fantasy anime. Add in its own uniquely great writing and animation, and Delicious in Dungeon makes for as great a watch as Frieren for a lot of the same reasons.

Fullmetal Alchemist & Frieren Are Both Excellent Gateways Into Anime

Fact Check: Angelina Jolie Was Purported To Have Said 'Arabs and Muslims Are Not Terrorists' and 'the World Should Unite Against Israel.' Here's the Truth

Angelina Jolie said, "Arabs and Muslims are not terrorists. The world should unite against Israel."

The protracted, often bloody Israeli-Palestinian conflict exploded into a hot war on Oct. 7, 2023, when the militant Palestinian group Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel and Israel retaliated by bombarding the Gaza Strip. More than 20,000 people, the vast majority of them Palestinians, were reportedly killed during the first two months of the war alone. The violence is driven by mutual hostilities and territorial ambitions dating back more than a century. The internet has become an unofficial front in that war and is rife with misinformation, which Snopes is dedicated to countering with facts and context. You can help. Read the latest fact checks. Submit questionable claims. Become a Snopes Member to support our work. We welcome your participation and feedback .

On April 28, 2024, a user on X (formerly Twitter) posted a quote meme that claimed Oscar-winning actor Angelina Jolie had once said, "Arabs and Muslims are not terrorists. The world should unite against Israel."

However, Snopes found no credible evidence that Jolie ever said these words, nor did she say anything that closely resembles the sentiment. The quote was first reported ( archived ) as being fake by BBC Verify journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh, after it was shared by another user in November 2023.

A Community Note was added to the post by other users who clarified that the quote was fake.

Snopes previously contacted Jolie via her open messages on Instagram to ask if she had any reaction about the fake quote being promoted online. We will update this article if a response is received.

In this story, we'll lay out all of the facts regarding the history of the quote, as well as Jolie's genuine thoughts regarding the Israel-Hamas war.

2015: Another Quote Meme with Jolie's Photo

The fake quote has appeared online for many years alongside Jolie's name. For example, a search of Google found a similar quote meme that was tweeted ( archived ) in 2015.

Angelina Jolie:Arabs and Muslims are not terrorists,The world should unite against Israel Courtesy: #PassTheKnowledge pic.twitter.com/buvWGs2qLb — Mr.Shams (@imshamss) July 11, 2015

Another person replied ( archived ) to the tweet to ask for proof that Jolie said this but received no response.

2009: 'I Got This in an Email'

One clue to the origins of this quote appeared in a Jan. 18, 2009, blog entry ( archived ) on Israellycool.com. An author with the blog said that a user on an internet forum mentioned that an email message was circulating at the time. The Israellycool.com author called it the "funniest fake Hollywood views on Middle East conflict of the day." The fake Jolie quote was included in the list:

Dear Friends, I got this in an email. No source was available ( gee, I wonder why- ed .). "If Arabs are strong enough, they will destroy the whole world, Therefore we should annihilate them." - Keanu Reeves "Arabs are dirtier creatures than animals and we Jews are the chosen people. There is no comparison." - Harrison Ford "I don't know much about the subject but the war should end to stop the bloodshed on both parts." - Sandra Bullock "Take a look at Israel's history and you would know who the terrorist is." - Al Pacino "Humanity seized to exist when Israel was established." - Dustin Hoffman "WE are living now in a jungle where the strong eats the weakest. We are not better than the Arabs to despise them." - Ralph Fiennes "The Arabs are the source of terrorism. They don't spare anyone without attacking them. I hope that Israel destroys all of them." - Tom Cruise "Israel means war and destruction and we Americans are behind this war. I am ashamed of being American." - Anthony Hopkins "Both sides are wrong and the killing must be stopped." - Will Smith "Bush, Sharon, Blair and Rice are names that history will d*mn." -George Clooney "Arabs and Muslims are not terrorists. The world should unite against Israel." - Angelina Jolie "Arabs are a burden on the world and should be annihilated." - Richard Gere "We are talking from a point of strength, what if we were the weak ones?" - Sean Connery "Zionists are the source of destruction. I wish I could fight against them." - Mel Gibson

Snopes found no evidence whatsoever that any of these quotes were real.

The author on Israellycool.com added, "Actually, the Mel Gibson quote I can believe" – an apparent reference to disparaging remarks that Oscar-winning actor Mel Gibson had previously made about Jewish people.

2006: 'A Poll' of '15 Prominent Hollywood Stars'

According to Google, the oldest-known posting of the fake Jolie quote was in an Aug. 23, 2006, article on IkhwanWeb.com . The article also included some of the same fake quotes posted by Israellycool.com in 2009. The IkhwanWeb.com website bills itself as the Muslim Brotherhood's official English website.

The article cited "a poll conducted [that] included 15 prominent Hollywood stars" but did not include any sources. This appeared to be similar to the purported email that was mentioned by Israellycool.com in 2009. Snopes contacted the staff of IkhwanWeb.com via email and will update this story if we receive a response.

Jolie's Genuine Thoughts about the Israel-Hamas War

Leaving aside the fake quote that mentioned Jolie's name, the actor truly has made remarks about the Israel-Hamas war.

In an Oct. 28, 2023, Instagram post that contained three slides of text, Jolie called Hamas' Oct. 7 attack in Israel "an act of terror" and said she was "praying for the immediate, safe return of every hostage, and for the families who carry the unimaginable pain of a murder of a loved one." She also said that Hamas' attack "cannot justify the innocent lives lost in bombing a civilian population in Gaza," and added that she believed, "Humanity demands an immediate ceasefire."

Days later, in another Instagram post on Nov. 1, Jolie posted a picture of the bombed Jabalia refugee camp and said, in part, "By refusing to demand a humanitarian ceasefire and blocking the UN Security Council from imposing one on both parties, world leaders are complicit in these crimes."

Atlanta Falcons 1st Round Draft Pick Michael Penix Jr.

© Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Falcons NFL Draft Recap: Grades, Notes & Quotes on Every Pick

From Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to Georgia defensive tackle Zion Logue, here's a deep dive on the Atlanta Falcons' 2024 NFL Draft class.

  • Author: Daniel Flick

In this story:

The 2024 NFL Draft has officially come to a close for the Atlanta Falcons .

It wasn’t always smooth; it wasn’t always well supported, but it certainly has a chance to dictate the franchise’s long-term future, for better or worse.

Following a Thursday night stunner , the Falcons finished defense heavy over the final two days in Detroit, ultimately bringing in eight new pieces with hopes of snapping a six-year playoff drought.

Atlanta’s pre-draft process featured the hurdle of a new coaching staff entering the frame in late January, resulting in an expedited cycle of meetings to garner an understanding of traits needed to make the next generation of Falcons football better than the last.

Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot departed the team’s draft room Saturday afternoon pleased with his eight selections – particularly with the quality characters he added to the locker room.”

“There’s not one player we took in this draft that we would say isn’t a captain, leader or a great teammate,” Fontenot said. “These guys check all the boxes. We’re extremely excited about it.”

Meet the Falcons’ 2024 draftees …

Round 1, No. 8 Overall: Michael Penix Jr. , Quarterback, Washington

Perhaps no pick turned more heads Thursday night than this one. After all, the Falcons were a month and a half removed from giving Kirk Cousins a four-year, $180 million contract with $90 million guaranteed over the next two years.

But Atlanta simply couldn’t shake Penix.

The 6-2, 216-pound lefty impressed the Falcons’ brain trust during a private throwing session in Seattle that lasted roughly 30 to 45 minutes.

Fontenot asserted the Falcons weren’t steadfast on drafting a quarterback – just Penix, the Heisman Trophy runner-up who broke his own school record with 4,903 passing yards in 2023.

Morris and Fontenot believe they won’t be in position to draft a quarterback early anytime soon. This, they feel, helps them get ahead of the curve.

But it’s also removing an opportunity to add a game-changing defender and only further aid the team’s path to contention. The move came as a surprise to Cousins , who’s already looking at his successor despite not playing a snap in Atlanta.

The Falcons won’t fully know what they have in Penix until he starts, which may not come until 2026 or 2027. If he hits, the grade is entirely different – he turns 24 on May 8, the roster-building value of having a quarterback on a rookie contract is mitigated, and he provides very little impact on Atlanta’s 2024 hopes.

PENIX PROSE : “It's been a childhood dream of mine,” Penix said. “So, as far as what anybody else feels about the decision that was made, I have no control over that. All I can control is what I do and what I bring to this team. And for me, I know that I'm going be a great leader, not just on, but off the field as well.”

FALCONS FEELINGS : “All those things  we talked about when we signed Kirk are a lot of the things we saw on tape from Michael that we love,” head coach Raheem Morris said. “The live arm, the ability to go out there and play, the ability to be healthy the last two years and really be successful in Washington. We love the fight in the kid. We loved the interactions that we had with him throughout the process.”

Round 2, No. 35 Overall: Ruke Orhorhoro , DL, Clemson

After bypassing defense in the first round, Atlanta wasted little time flipping the script on Day 2. The Falcons packaged the No. 43 and No. 79 overall selections for No. 35 and No. 186 from the Arizona Cardinals.

Still, Orhorhoro was something of a surprise pick, especially with Illinois defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton and a pair of corners in Kool-Aid McKinstry and Cooper DeJean on the board.

But the Falcons had Orhorhoro atop their stack of players entering the second round, with Fontenot citing his power, athleticism and 6-4, 294-pound build.

Orhorhoro’s athletic traits were illustrated at the NFL Combine , where he ran a 4.89 40-yard dash with a 1.67 10-yard split and recorded jumps of 32” in the vertical and 9’8” in the broad. His athleticism score of 89 overall is the draft’s best mark among defensive tackles, according to  NFL.Com .

On the field, the Falcons feel Orhorhoro has a well-rounded skill set that allows him to play the run and pass at a high level – and at a multitude of spots.

A vocal leader and two-time All-ACC third-team honoree, Orhorhoro registered eight tackles for loss and a career-high five sacks to go along with 26 pressures and 17 hurries in 2023.

There were, at least by consensus boards, better players available – and Atlanta gave up a top-80 pick to make the selection.

But Orhorhoro offers upside and versatility to a defensive line that needed bolstering, and it’s easy to see the Falcons’ vision.

RUKE’S RUMBLINGS : “It means they really wanted me and really saw something in me,” Orhorhoro said of the Falcons trading up. “I can’t let them down, and I’ll do everything in my willpower to not let them down.”

FALCONS FEELINGS : “What we really valued was the position flex,” Morris said. “Having the ability to move him around and to be able to play the end position, being able to play that nose tackle position, being able to play that three-technique position – that's something he did a lot of at Clemson, moved all over the place.”

Round 3, No. 74 Overall: Bralen Trice , EDGE, Washington:

In what certainly would’ve been viewed as an unpopular move pre-draft, the Falcons waited until their third selection to snag a solution to their exterior pass rush question.

The 23-year-old Trice offers a resounding answer, as he’s been college football’s best pressure player over the past two years – his 53 hurries led the country last year, as did his 74 pressures. He’s generated a nation-leading 150 pressures since the start of 2022.

A team captain in 2023, Trice finished the campaign with 11.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He was listed at 6-4, 274 pounds, but trimmed to 245 for NFL Combine testing; he ran a 4.72 40-yard dash with a 1.65 10-yard split.

In Atlanta, Trice reunites with defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake, who recruited him to Washington in 2019 and served as his head coach from 2020-21.

Trice said he’s excited to work under Lake once more, citing his “dog mentality” and ability to get players into the right mental mindset.

The Falcons’ edge group is headlined by outside linebackers Arnold Ebiketie and Lorenzo Carter, while second-year defensive end Zach Harrison is an intriguing breakout candidate after a strong close to last season.

Trice has the production and character to be a strong addition to the room, and while the wait for an edge rusher proved longer than expected, this may ultimately be the Falcons’ most impactful pick this fall.

TRICE TALKS : “You won’t be regretting this pick at all, Atlanta,” Trice said. “Just know I’m showing up and doing everything for you guys and my family. You’re going to get everything out of me.”

FALCONS FEELINGS : “Versatile player, tough, instinctive, he can play the run, he can rush the passer,” Fontenot said. “Powerful, heavy-handed on the edge, and again, excellent motor, non-stop motor. Love the way he plays the game and the way he approaches the game.”

Round 4, No. 109 Overall: Brandon Dorlus , DL, Oregon

Atlanta selected its third-straight defensive lineman in Dorlus, a 6-3, 283-pound standout from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Dorlus was an All-PAC-12 honoree each of the past three years, receiving first-team nods in 2021 and 2023 and a second-team honor in 2022.

He broke through in 2021, recording seven tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks while generating 42 pressures and 33 hurries. The following year, Dorlus had a team-high 9.5 tackles for loss and added 2.5 sacks. He tied for seventh among all FBS defenders with 40 hurries.

The 23-year-old Dorlus capped his college career with another pressure-packed campaign, making 6.5 tackles for loss and a team-high five sacks. He deflected nine passes, most among all PAC-12 defensive linemen.

At the NFL Combine, Dorlus ran a 4.85 40-yard dash with a 1.68 10-yard split. He jumped 30.5” in the vertical and 9’3” in the broad.

Morris said the Falcons were most attracted to Dorlus’ ability to be disruptive inside and at a variety of spots. Atlanta plans on putting Dorlus in position to attack the edges of offensive lineman, with Morris saying he’ll play a similar spot to Grady Jarrett and David Onyemata.

And much like Trice, Dorlus has the resume and skill set to make an early impact in 2024.

DORLUS DIARIES : “I feel like I do everything,” Dorlus said. “I can stop the run from anywhere, I can pass rush from anywhere. I’m a savvy d-lineman who can beat you with a plethora of moves – my go-to moves and my counter moves.”

FALCONS FEELINGS : “The first thing that jumps off the tape is the speed, effort, dynamic ability to use his hands,” defensive line coach Jay Rodgers said,  via the Falcons . “The ability to attack the edges, to make offensive linemen move certain ways. His burst to close on the quarterback.

“When you have a tool you can utilize to get quarterbacks down, those are things that are very attractive.”

Round 5, No. 143 Overall: JD Bertrand , LB, Notre Dame

A native of Alpharetta, Georgia, who attended Blessed Trinity High School in Roswell, Bertrand led the Fighting Irish in tackles for three straight seasons.

The 6-1, 235-pound Bertrand broke through in 2021, posting 101 tackles while starting all 13 games and making seven tackles for loss. The year after, he recorded 82 stops and 8.5 tackles for loss.

During his final season in South Bend, Bertrand logged 76 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Bertrand, who turns 24 years old on May 5, has an impressive off-field resume. He was a member of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in 2022 and, this past season, became a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy (community service) and William V. Campbell Trophy (known as the ‘Academic Heisman’).

After the Falcons turned in the draft card, Fontenot received a text from one of his former players – linebacker James Laurinaitis – raving about Bertrand.

Morris effused praise on Bertrand’s makeup and willingness to work, with the Fighting Irish standout already appearing to have a soft spot in his coach’s heart after a positive conversation at the team’s local pro day April 12.

Bertrand projects as a special teams contributor and No. 4 linebacker as a rookie – and although he was selected earlier than expected, he arrives in Atlanta with a safe floor and should see the field in some capacity as a rookie.

HAPPY HOMECOMING : “I couldn’t imagine a better situation,” Bertrand said. “I have an awesome support group at home, so to be close to them and make the travel easy for my family and have a community that’s supported me through high school, college and play for them at the NFL level, I couldn’t be more grateful.”

FALCONS FEELINGS : “You talk about a smart, instinctive football player,” Fontenot said. “The character, the makeup. He’s a four-down player, because of what he can do as a run defender, in coverage and also in the kicking game.”

Round 6, No. 186 Overall: Jase McClellan , RB, Alabama

The Falcons have now drafted running backs each of the last three years, and McClellan figures to contend for a spot behind Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier.

Throughout the pre-draft process, Atlanta looks at hit rates for each position in each round, and Fontenot said sixth round running backs have a strong track record of outplaying their slot.

Atlanta views McClellan as a smart, tough and versatile player, and his background at one of college football’s powerhouses is a notable plus on his report.

Fontenot noted the Falcons like drafting Alabama players, citing the seventh-round selection of Alabama safety DeMarcco Hellams last year; Hellams grew into a starter by year’s end and has many fans inside the team’s front office.

As for McClellan, the 21-year-old from Aledo, Texas, led the Crimson Tide in rushing with 180 carries for 890 yards and eight touchdowns. He added 15 receptions for 137 yards.

A consensus four-star recruit out of Aledo High School, McClellan was a four-year contributor at Alabama and a key cog in the running back committee for his final three.

The 5-10, 221-pound ball-carrier's roster spot isn’t a certainty, and the Falcons didn’t have much of an overly pressing need for another running back.

But ultimately, McClellan is a sixth-round pick who started playing special teams as a freshman at Alabama and may be able to carve out a minimal role in the backfield committee.

McCLELLAN’S MUSINGS : “They’re getting an all-around good player,” McClellan said. “Somebody that’s coming in ready to work. I’m ready to help this team win.”

FALCONS FEELINGS : “Natural runner,” Fontenot said. “Physical, strong back. Three-down in terms of what he can do in the pass game – he can pass protect, he can catch the ball. Very excited about him. Another top makeup guy.”

Round 6, No. 187 Overall: Casey Washington , WR, Illinois

Washington finished 2023 as one of the Big Ten’s most productive receivers, catching 49 passes for 670 yards and four touchdowns. His 589 yards in conference play ranked sixth-most, while his scoring output slotted him fourth.

The 6-1, 197-pound Washington saved his best for last at Illinois, catching nine passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to Northwestern.

During his pro day, Washington jumped 39.5” in the vertical and 10’7” in the broad while running a 4.46 40-yard dash.

Atlanta’s receiving core has a pair of standouts in Drake London and Darnell Mooney, and Rondale Moore likely has a role as a slot and gadget player, but question marks persist.

Washington is athletic and ascending; he was under-recruited out of Pflugerville High School in Round Rock, Texas, and said he’s carried the chip on his shoulder through present day.

Like McClellan, whether Washington makes the roster is unknown – but there’s a path to playing time both now and in the future, making Atlanta’s plan understandable.

WASHINGTON’S WORDS : “I’m still another world right now,” Washington said. “I’m still dreaming. To hear my name be called and see myself on the screen, it’s emotional. It’s been a long journey, and the fact I’m here right now is a blessing.”

FALCONS FEELINGS : “Prototype,” Fontenot said. “Size, speed – this guy has measurables, he has traits. We spent time with him and we love the makeup. Plays with a chip on his shoulder; he’s a competitor, so we know he’ll be able to contribute in other areas as well.”

Round 6, No. 197 Overall: Zion Logue , DL, Georgia

The Falcons finished the draft by selecting their third Georgia player under Fontenot – the 6-5, 310-pound Logue, who joins a pair of 2022 sixth-rounders in guard Justin Shaffer and tight end John FitzPatrick.

Logue played in all 14 games for the Bulldogs this past season, drawing 10 starts while recording 17 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks.

The Lebanon, Tenn., native arrived in Athens in 2019 and played in 50 games over his five-year career. He saw action in 43 contests across the past three years, recording 52 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, three pass deflections and a forced fumble.

At February's NFL Combine, Logue ran a 5.14 40-yard dash paired with a 1.82 10-yard split. He had a 29" vertical jump, 9'1" broad jump and 4.92 20-yard shuttle.

Logue played both defensive end and defensive tackle in Athens and feels comfortable at both, though he said he would like to play three-technique with his hand in the dirt.

After its first round stunner, Atlanta placed a significant emphasis on trench play. Logue played on an SEC defensive line for five years and has the size and versatility to provide quality depth, making him a fine addition at this stage in the draft.

LOGUE’S LOOKS : “I still can’t put it into words,” Logue said. “I’m so blessed, just to stay in Georgia. I’m ready to get started.”

FALCONS FEELINGS : “Big, massive man,” Fontenot said. “He’s huge. Big, strong, physical. Good developmental traits. Love the size and love the makeup.”

OSBORNE: You may find he’s—he’s a little bit quick-tempered.

RALEIGH [ laughing ]: Oh, I know old Dennis’s temper! I remember once at school he caught some chaps in a study with a bottle of whisky. Lord! the roof nearly blew off. He gave them a dozen each with a cricket stump.

[OSBORNE laughs ]

He was so keen on the fellows in the house keeping fit. He was frightfully down on smoking—and that sort of thing.

OSBORNE: You must remember he’s commanded this company for a long time—through all sorts of rotten times. It’s—it’s a big strain on a man. […] If you notice a—difference in Stanhope—you’ll know it’s only the strain—

Anticipation, Expectations, and Uncertainty Theme Icon

RALEIGH: It’s—it’s not exactly what I thought. It’s just this—this quiet that seems so funny.

OSBORNE: A hundred yards from here the Germans are sitting in their dugouts, thinking how quiet it is.

RALEIGH: Are they as near as that?

OSBORNE: About a hundred yards.

RALEIGH: It seems—uncanny. It makes me feel we’re—we’re all just waiting for something.

OSBORNE: We are, generally, just waiting for something. When anything happens, it happens quickly. Then we just start waiting again.

Repetition, Futility, and Perspective Theme Icon

It was all right at first. When I went home on leave after six months it was jolly fine to feel I’d done a little to make her pleased. [ He takes a gulp of his drink .] It was after I came back here—in that awful affair on Vimy Ridge. I knew I’d go mad if I didn’t break the strain. I couldn’t bear being fully conscious all the time— you’ve felt that, Uncle, haven’t you? […] There were only two ways of breaking the strain. One was pretending I was ill—and going home; the other was this. [ He holds up his glass .] […] I thought it all out. It’s a slimy thing to go home if you’re not really ill, isn’t it?

OSBORNE: I remember up at Wipers we had a man shot when he was out on patrol. Just at dawn. We couldn’t get him in that night. He lay out there groaning all day. Next night three of our men crawled out to get him in. It was so near the German trenches that they could have shot our fellows one by one. But, when our men began dragging the wounded man back over the rough ground, a big German officer stood up in their trenches and called out. ‘Carry him!’—and our fellows stood up and carried the man back and the German officer fired some lights for them to see by.

RALEIGH: How topping!

OSBORNE: Next day we blew each other’s trenches to blazes.

RALEIGH: It all seems rather— silly , doesn’t it?

I was feeling bad. I forgot Raleigh was out there with Trotter. I’d forgotten all about him. I was sleepy. I just knew something beastly had happened. Then he came in with Trotter—and looked at me. After coming in out of the night air, this place must have reeked of candle-grease, and rats—and whisky. One thing a boy like that can’t stand is a smell that isn’t fresh. He looked at me as if I’d hit him between the eyes—as if I’d spat on him—

If you went—and left Osborne and Trotter and Raleigh and all those men up there to do your work—could you ever look a man straight in the face again—in all your life! [ There is silence again .] You may be wounded. Then you can go home and feel proud—and if you’re killed you—you won’t have to stand this hell any more. I might have fired just now. If I had you would have been dead now. But you’re still alive—with a straight fighting chance of coming through. Take the chance, old chap, and stand in with Osborne and Trotter and Raleigh. Don’t you think it worth standing in with men like that?—when you know they all feel like you do—in their hearts—and just go on sticking it because they know it’s—it’s the only thing a decent man can do.

OSBORNE: Haven’t you read it?

TROTTER [ scornfully ]: No!

OSBORNE: You ought to. [ Reads ] How doth the little crocodile Improve his shining tail, And pour the waters of the Nile On every golden scale? How cheerfully he seems to grin And neatly spread his claws, And welcomes little fishes in With gently smiling jaws!

TROTTER [ after a moment’s thought ]: I don’t see no point in that.

OSBORNE [ wearily ]: Exactly. That’s just the point.

RALEIGH: Good God! Don’t you understand? How can I sit down and eat that—when—[ his voice is nearly breaking ]—when Osborne’s—lying—out there—

[STANHOPE rises slowly. His eyes are wide and staring; he is fighting for breath, and his words come brokenly .]

STANHOPE: My God! You bloody little swine! You think I don’t care—you think you’re the only soul that cares!

RALEIGH: And yet you can sit there and drink champagne—and smoke cigars—

STANHOPE: The one man I could trust—my best friend—the one man I could talk to as man to man—who understood everything—and you don’t think I care—

RALEIGH: But how can you when—?

STANHOPE: To forget, you little fool—to forget! D’you understand? To forget! You think there’s no limit to what a man can bear?

ICYMI: Chairwoman Stefanik: Democrats’ Corrupt And Desperate Witch Hunts Against President Trump Must Come To An End

April 30 , 2024.

Washington, D.C. – House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik joined her House colleagues to discuss her official ethics complaint against Jack Smith with the Department of Justice's Office of Professional Responsibility for his illegal election interference against President Donald Trump.

Stefanik also addressed the pro-Hamas, antisemitic rioting mob that took over an academic building at Columbia last night and reiterated her commitment to hold America’s so-called elite colleges and universities accountable.

“The world is watching as the leadership of our so-called elite colleges and universities continue to fail to condemn antisemitism and protect Jewish students on campus.

Just look at the abject failure of Columbia’s president to enforce their own code of conduct that they gave lip service to during the recent Education and Workforce hearing. Last night, the pro-Hamas, antisemitic mob took over an academic building. The university leadership has lost complete control. It is a disgrace, and it is untenable. And we as House Republicans will hold them to account. I will continue to lead on this issue, and House Republicans will expand our efforts on oversight with additional committee chairs with an announcement later today.

Also in New York, we are now in week three of Alvin Bragg’s witch hunt, the first criminal trial of a former President of the United States. It is crystal clear from the opening arguments and evidence that this extraordinarily weak case is blatant lawfare and election interference during the height of the presidential campaign.

While the violent crime crisis rages in New York, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg brought bogus felony charges against President Trump for the non-felony of booking a 2017 nuisance claim as a “legal expense.” Under this bogus legal theory, this somehow impacted the election. This theory is so baseless that it was previously passed over by the prior Manhattan DA, the Manhattan U.S. Attorney, the Federal Election Commission, and Alvin Bragg himself.

But a top political appointee in the Biden Justice Department was deployed to Bragg’s office to go after Joe Biden’s top political opponent and the Republican nominee: Donald J. Trump. And the case is in front of the Democrat Judge Juan Merchan who donated to Biden’s campaign. And whose daughter is raising tens of millions off this unprecedented case.

This is corrupt election interference to its core. Even a former Clinton federal judge said Judge Merchan must recuse. What was Merchan’s response? He retaliated against President Trump with an unconstitutional gag order.

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee, under the leadership of Chairman Jim Jordan, released a scathing report highlighting Bragg's political investigation and prosecution of President Trump, calling it a direct threat to our republic. Democrats’ corrupt and desperate witch hunts against President Trump must come to an end. This is lawfare and blatant election interference, and the American people know it.

That is why today I filed an official complaint with the Department of Justice’s Office of Professional Responsibility on Joe Biden’s special counsel Jack Smith for his clear and illegal efforts of election interference.

We will fight the Democrats’ unjust lawfare and expose this corruption. Whether it is in New York, Atlanta, or here in Washington, D.C., this is an important responsibility of our oversight.

In addition to this important oversight work, legislatively, House Republicans are continuing to lead on behalf of the American people. This week on the House floor, we have a series of bills to protect America’s public lands while ensuring the safe, reliable development of our natural resources. We are also marking the start of National Small Business Week, the backbone and economic engine of our country. So today, we are joined by two chairs, our Chairman of House Natural Resources Committee Bruce Westerman and Chairman of the Small Business Committee Roger Williams, to discuss in more detail.”

I was a single foster parent. I ended up adopting my first placement.

  • I've always wanted kids but never found a partner to build a family with.
  • I became a licensed foster parent and four months later a 2-week-old baby was placed with me.
  • Days before her first birthday I legally adopted her.

Insider Today

I had always wanted kids. When it seemed like I would never find Mr. Right , I decided to build my family alone. I learned about fostering and became a licensed foster parent . I felt I had a good support team with my sister and a few close friends. Surprisingly, my boss said he was on board with the idea, though he wasn't much of a family person.

Just four months after being licensed, a two-week-old girl was placed in my home on a Friday afternoon in February. I was over the moon at the idea of raising a newborn though I knew it might be only temporary.

Related stories

After getting settled over the weekend, I had to figure out what to do about my job as a leasing agent for an apartment complex. I had very little PTO , and the baby was too young to go to day care. With my boss's approval, I decided to take her to work temporarily. The baby slept under my desk and my receptionist would watch her while I showed apartments to prospective tenants.

I almost lost my job

The arrangement only lasted a couple of weeks before my boss gave me an ultimatum: either find somewhere else to leave the baby, or I would lose my job. He refused to allow me to use my vacation time or unpaid leave, saying I was needed at work. Though I knew it was illegal to refuse time off for someone who had gone through childbirth, I wasn't sure fostering worked the same way. I had to find a solution now.

I found a day care that would take a 4-week-old baby, which allowed me to go back to work. I began job-hunting and soon found a position with a more understanding employer.

The birth mom eventually gave up her rights

My next challenge came with the baby's one-hour visits with her mother once a week. Though foster parents aren't required to transport the children to parental visits, my caseworker threatened to remove the baby from my care if I refused. My heart filled with fear, I agreed immediately though I didn't know how I could make it work. My sister later offered to help transport the baby every other week, solving another problem.

I had no idea what would happen with the baby in the long term. The mother wasn't meeting the requirements to have the baby returned to her and finally decided to give up her rights. The team changed the plan to adoption. As the foster parent, I had the right to seek adoption. In many cases, the foster parents are granted adoption rights, but I knew I had a challenge to prove I was a better choice than a two-parent home.

The process lasted several months, and I was anxious about losing this child I had come to love as my own. Though I had friends to share my struggles with, I still felt alone. They couldn't understand the overwhelming fear of loss that I dealt with. Fortunately, the team approved me as the adoptive parent.

On a warm, sunny day in February, two days before her first birthday, I stood with my little girl in front of the judge who approved the adoption . The challenges of the past year faded away as I held my new daughter in my arms.

Though new challenges awaited, I would face them with the same faith and determination as an example to my daughter about overcoming difficult odds together.
