Château Latour, 1er Cru Classé, Pauillac, 2005
Broking Broking These are wines from our broking list and have an average delivery window of 15 working days.
Latour’s 2005 is, for the moment, a mysterious introvert, a kickback to the intense mega-vintages of the 1980’s which, when tasted en primeur, gave very little away as to the glories to come. In comparison to a run of vintages in which Frédéric Engerer has managed to produce wines that were approachable and comprehensible at a very early age, this wine requires considerable olfactory exploration to determine its future. Worry not, though, for it is indeed a great wine: behind a waxy smooth façade of graphite lurk hints of cherries and berries, minty game, herbs and toasty oak. There is huge concentration on the palate but also great freshness, with some black cherry, spice and chocolate hints. Tannins here are as fine as they can be, and the length quite remarkable. This is clearly a wine that will last a century.

Château Latour
This great and historic estate is rightly regarded as one of the preeminent properties in Bordeaux and one of the greatest wines of the world. Along with Lafite Rothschild and Mouton Rothschild, Latour completes the three First Growths of Pauillac. It has become synonymous with wines of gravitas, scale and tremendous aging potential.
The last change of ownership occurred in 1993, when the billionaire, François Pinault returned this bastion of Bordeaux to French hands. He appointed the meticulous Frédéric Engerer as technical Director, and Latour has enjoyed a period of unparalleled success ever since. It’s a marriage of meticulous, perfectionist viticulture and wine-making and extraordinary terroir.
The grand vin hails from the 47 Hectare “ Grand Enclos ”, the vineyards which surrounds the winery and abuts the Clos of Leoville Las Cases in St Julien to the south. The topsoil is made up of Gunzian gravel, brought to the area from the Pyrenees and the Massif Central during the Pleistocene with a subsoil of marl and clay above a deeper ridge of limestone. Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant varietal (80%), with Merlot (18%) and Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot accounting for just 2% of plantings. The excellent second wine, Les Forts de Latour is arguably equal to notable Second Growths, however, demand from Asia ensures a luxury price tag... There is also a third wine, simply called “ Pauillac ”.
Sadly, the Chateau’s board decided to remove Latour from the en primeur market. 2011 was the last vintage released as a future. The strategy to offer mature wines from their cellars is well established now, with a major release each March and a smaller proposal in September.

Tasted at an Evening with Friends alongside 2005 Mouton Rothschild and 2005 Chateau Larcis Ducasse. The Chateau Latour was, at first, not that approachable as we had opened and decanted the wines just prior to the main dinner course. We wanted to understand the evolution from bottle to glass from the beginning. With time the aromatics developed and were profound, the flavors of this truly outstanding Bordeaux coming through after the first to second hour of the dinner. While this wine remains very young, approach now with some reticence as holding for longer would be highly recommended. Certainly a wine that will last through the decades. I would reward myself another tasting in about 3 years, to follow the progression of what should become a blockbuster wine!

JD Friday Wine Group - GA Host (City Club FW - Wine Room) : Tasted blind - fairly light in the glass. Nose of tertiary things - some leather, mushrooms. Raspberry and olives on the palate. I didn’t know where to go here. It was tasty but not fully developed. I ended up guessing a right bank bordeaux because I thought there was some cab franc and maybe merlot. I think with more time, this will evolve beautifully.

Commanderie dinner. Decanted for 3h. Farewell bottle I brought to share with my fellow commanders. After some disappointing showings of the 2005 Latour where I detected heat and rusticity, this one was much correct and in the Latour House style. Discrete nose of clean blue fruit, some oak spices still, the tannins are tightly woven, soft, dusty and precise, like in the 2010 style. Not a hint of tertiary notes. Still very closed, so I do not recommend opening this before 2030. That was the unanimous comment at the table. 96-97

The 2005 Latour is made from 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Always the equivalent of many classed growths, Les Forts de Latour is hardly a second wine, deriving from a particular parcel of the Latour vineyard. This 2005 is beautifully balanced, with lively fresh acidity, dense tannins and ripe, juicy black fruits. The acidity stays right to the end. — Roger Voss
