The Black Keys should have UGK and Outkast’s 2007 hit “Int’l Players Anthem” blast through every arena they take the stage on during their forthcoming tour — it would only be fitting. The band has announced the 2024 International Players tour in support of their forthcoming album Ohio Players , out Friday. The North American run of shows will feature special guests The Head And The Heart on select dates.

The International Players tour will run for 31 dates, beginning in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Sept. 17 and wrapping in Detroit, Michigan, on Nov. 12. The Black Keys will make stops in Austin, Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Toronto, Nashville, Louisville, New York, Baltimore, Chicago, and more. The band will also perform two hometown shows in Ohio.

General sale for the tour will begin on Friday, April 5 at 10 a.m. local time. Presales will run throughout the week through Live Nation and the official Black Keys website.

Today, The Black Keys (“America’s Most Trusted Band” -Stephen Colbert) announce their World Tour of America. The band will perform three intimate shows in Oxford, MS, Athens, GA, and St Petersburg, FL, surrounding their performance at Pilgrimage Fest in Tennessee. A portion of each set at these intimate shows will consist of songs from the band’s new album, Delta Kream, which features eleven Mississippi hill country blues songs by artists including R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Patrick Carney said of these dates, which the band hopes to make a tradition: “Dan and I have joked about doing a tour of American cities named after other cities in the world since we were touring together in a van. It feels like now is as good a time as any and we are excited to play in some places we haven’t played since the early days of the band and for fans that have not had a chance to see us in a while.” Tickets for these dates will go on sale here on Friday, July 23 at 10am Local Time. Members of the Lonely Boys and Girls Club will have access to pre-sale tickets.

The Black Keys have also announced that they will partner with the Save The Music Foundation to support elementary and middle school music programs in Mississippi—starting with Holly Springs. Fans can participate in a sweepstakes to win a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the band, with 100% of the proceeds going towards music education grants in seven schools across Mississippi. Every Save The Music school commits to having music for at least ten years, and most of the programs last far beyond that. The band shares about the program: “We’ve teamed up with Save The Music – a national non-profit dedicated to building school music programs – and a group of local Mississippi partners to contribute instruments and teacher support to schools in the Hill Country. The goal is to grow music programs across the state, starting this coming school year with Holly Springs.” Fans can view sweepstakes details and participate at:  https://www.propeller.la/theblackkeys

The Black Keys’ tenth studio album, Delta Kream , was released on May 14, 2021 and recorded at Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville. The album takes its name from William Eggleston’s iconic Mississippi photograph that is on its cover. Delta Kream  is available for purchase on all formats here .

CRITICAL PRAISE FOR DELTA KREAM

“By spending the time playing the blues that’s buried deep in their soul, the Black Keys reveal how far they’vegone in a space of 20 years...”

“[Delta Kream] finds Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney doing what they do best, riding a smoky electric bluesgroove that gives Auerbach plenty of space to wrangle some emotion out of his guitar.”

“A tribute to the roots and blues music they were raised on, featuring some of its most formative play- ers … a slow-rolling swagger through a bygone era, gilded by the band’s own faithful imitations … a living history lesson, too.”

-Entertainment Weekly

“Stellar… an exciting foray into Hill Country blues combined with The Black Keys’ signature garage rock sound.”

-Consequence of Sound

“Thick, swampy sonics created by the four players as they weave these licks together with the intensity and sheer love of the music that clearly runs through their veins… if enough Keys fans are encouraged to explore the originals, this project will have accomplished its mission.”

-No Depression

“The Keys have streamlined some great blues songs into sleek, rock-leaning jams.”

-Rolling Stone

“Their mastery of the unmathematical Hill Country style oozes here from every groove. Their back-to- our-roots arc is hardly new, but this music is timeless, alive, and about as good as it gets.”

“Recorded with former RL Burnside guitarist Kenny Brown and bassist Eric Deaton, this revisits raw and mesmerising RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough ’juke’ numbers ... you completely understand how the simple groove and ringing of the strings might act as a revivifying tonic.”

Formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001, The Black Keys, who have been called   “rock royalty” by the Associated Press and   “one of the best rock ‘n’ roll bands on the planet” by Uncut , are guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Cutting their teeth playing small clubs, the band have gone on to sell out arena tours and have released nine previous studio albums: their debut The Big Come Up (2002), followed by Thickfreakness (2003) and Rubber Factory (2004), along with their releases on Nonesuch Records, Magic Potion (2006), Attack & Release (2008), Brothers (2010), El Camino (2011), Turn Blue (2014) and, most recently, “ Let’s Rock ” (2019), plus and a tenth anniversary edition of Brothers (2020). The band has won six Grammy Awards and a BRIT and headlined festivals in North America, South America, Mexico, Australia, and Europe.   THE BLACK KEYS WORLD TOUR OF AMERICA

Ranked by Guitar World readers as one of the best guitar albums of 2021 , Delta Kream brought the blues revivalists turned arena rockers back to their musical roots.

Recorded with the help of legendary Mississippi Hill Country blues guitar player Kenny Brown , the album was the product of some spontaneous jam sessions involving Brown, bass guitar player Eric Deaton and Black Keys frontman/ electric guitar player Dan Auerbach.

“It was just so much fun that I had to call Pat [Carney, drummer], and I said, ‘Man, you gotta come over here and I’ll see if these guys can stay an extra day and you can just play some songs.’ And that’s what he did,” Auerbach told Guitar World in 2021. “He showed up the next morning; we just started playing for fun and we cut this record in a day.”

The Black Keys are an American blues rock band formed in Ohio in 2001. Band members, and childhood friends, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney self-produced their tracks until making the big time in 2010.

The Black Keys have released eight studio albums since 2002 with each album doing better than the last on the US Billboard charts. The band’s most recent album, “Turn Blue” reached the number one spot in the US and was a top five album in almost every other country.

The band’s musical prowess has been recognised and celebrated with a staggering seven Grammy Awards, four of which were won in 2013 for the album “El Camino”. The Black Keys claim that legendary bands such as The Beatles, T. Rex and The Clash influenced the album.

Extensively touring and promoting their own work in small venues throughout the US and Europe in the early years, it wasn’t until 2011 that The Black Keys were given the chance to complete an arena tour to support “El Camino”. While old hands at the touring lifestyle, the band was forced to pull out of many Australian, New Zealand and European dates for their “El Camino” tour due to exhaustion and their overwhelming schedule.

Despite the cancellation of these gigs, the band did not rest on their laurels and instead set about getting to work on their next album, ”Turn Blue”. The Black Keys have stated that they prefer to be working on and releasing new music and albums rather than constantly pushing their older material.

The band’s most popular single to date is “Lonely Boy” which went platinum in the US, Canada and Australia. Other hits have included the singles “Tighten Up” and “Gold on the Ceiling”. No strangers to hard work, it goes without saying that The Black Keys will have many more hit singles in their future and will continue to cultivate and expand upon the loyal fan base they already have.

Live reviews

The Black Keys are my favorite band and I am always excited to see Dan and Patrick rock out the entire house. I've seen them in intimate settings like a little bar up to large sold-out arenas, and every time they have put on an amazing and electric show.

They are not known for huge set pieces, typically it's just Dan out with his guitars and Patrick behind his drum set, but lately they've added a keyboardist, bassist, and backing vocals for some of the newer songs, but they only add to the show. The band has been around for quite a few years, but it seems like only recently they have blown up and everyone wants to see them. I like seeing them live because they seem to extend every song a little bit and Dan has a different touch on each guitar solo that just gets everyone into a nice groove.

They have a good mix of slower songs and faster rocking songs from all of their albums at every show, so any fan of the band who has followed from the beginning, to someone who had just heard their songs on commercials, will be able to appreciate and expand their taste for the Black Keys. My favorite songs to see are "Thickfreakness" because it rocks harder than most other songs these days, and is very impressive because it is just two instruments.

Another song that will leave lasting memories is "Everlasting Light". The performance makes it seem like Dan and Pat are just two normal guys who like to rock out, and that's exactly what you get!

Fantastic Concert. The Black Keys have spent over a decade touring America and Europe waiting to make it big and during that time they perfected a real performance. They once said back in 2008 that they didn't have a lot of gimmicks in their shows knowing that is what some people wanted. They didn't have the popularity. Now that they do, they certainly aren't throwing away what made them a great performing band. The first leg of the tour had a set list that contained nothing from before Brothers . . . They changed that on the second leg. Playing all the way back to a Taj Mahal cover on their first record to a few from Turn Blue and even a cover after that, they put together a great show that doesn't distract from the music. Many artists have resorted to relying on LED panels to do that show for them. The Black Keys have many lights but the brightest shine on them. With soulful instrumentals between songs and different takes on some classics, it's a show that keeps you engaged the whole way through. Some people may not like Turn Blue, personally I know it is their worst record, but that doesn't make it bad or even them washed up or sold out. They are the same blues rock band that wanted to do something different in the studio. On stage the guitar solos and powerful verses remain in everything they do. Plus I got a drumstick from Pat and a pick from Dan!

I love to finally have been able to see them!

There were a few things that would've made this experience better for me:

* too much time between songs and not with chit chat with the audience, just silence;

* yeah, more chit chat and engagement with the audience;

* the voice was drowned by the music too many times;

* which was even worse when they decided to slow sing some of their not so slow songs - we cannot hear you sing and now we do not have the hard drums in the background;

* the venue is just not a good venue for concerts (which is the case with big venues like that, makes you feel restricted) so advice for the band is to not perform in such venues, which I know is difficult because there are so many of us wanting to see them, so where else to play?! Music festivals!!!

This was my very first concert I've ever been to, and it far surpassed my expectations. I showed up prepared to sit and listen to some great music by the Black Keys for about an hour. What I got, however, was two straight hours of pure magic. Their performance was absolutely amazing, from their music to the awesome light show they put on. The most memorable moment was after their last song. They had gone off stage and the fans are all screaming for an encore, and after a while of shouting and cheering with everybody holding up their phones with the flashlights on, they come back out and play a few more songs, finishing it off with Little Black Submarines (possibly their best song). All I can say is that this was one of the best nights of my life, thanks to the Black Keys.

Wow, what a show! Locate the Elepahnt started things off and did a great job. Very high energy. Then came the Keys. What a set up! The entire backdrop would change with every song. So cool. They played a bunch of their hits and a bunch of deep cuts. They played for a good chunk of time. Then after without the house lights coming up at all the entire place started to glow. Everyone had taken their cellphones out and turned on their flashlights while cheering T the top of their lungs. The band ended up coming back out for an encore with another surprise set change. In all they ended up playing for about an hour forty five, and it wasn't enough. They could have played their entire catalog and it wouldn't have been enough. I didn't want to leave. What a show!

I originally went to the concert looking forward to Cage the Elephant more than Black Keys, even though I'd say they're both my favorite bands. After I picked up the shards of my exploded brain I remembered why the Black Keys are the best band in rock right now. Auerbach rocked every single solo like it was the height of the concert. Carney kept every beat insanely tight and literally shook Barclays with his killer solos as well. They played through a huge amount of songs, mainly focusing on Turn Blue and El Camino but they threw in bumpers from their older catalogue as well. Overall my mind was utterly blown, Best rock show I've seen since Springsteen.

I've been a Black Keys fan since they released Magic Potion in 2007. They've consistently been my favorite band and I am proud to still be their biggest fan. This was the 4th time I've seen them live and by far the most impressive performance. Even though we were far back, the entire section rocked out like we were front row. They played all their greatest hits including some off their old albums like Oceans & Streams, Thickfreakness, and Magic Potion. The new music rocks out so I am so pleased with this experience I now call, the best concert of my life. I will travel to Boston on October 11th to see them live for my 25th birthday - LET'S ROCK!

Black Keys upped the setlist from 2 years ago - while not a lot of older material there was still not as much brand new. This is a good thing; i could feel the sexiness coming off the blues of Leavin' Trunk, and the cover of Girl Like You (Edwyn Collins) was a tremendous surprise. The opener Cage the Elephant blew the crowd away and kept it nice and warm for the Black Keys to come right in and keep the energy going.

The Black Keys did a great job. The music sounded amazing live and the set transitions were really neat and different.

The guys put on quite a show and I'm glad I got to experience it from the pit- even if it meant getting picked up by a random person and set on their shoulder. Security hated me for a hot minute, but I had the best view for a song or two.

The experience with Song kick was horrible... I bought tickets off of their website and then when I went to pick them up, they informed me at Willcall that I have been scammed... as there were no tickets waiting for me. Dont buy with this app... I lost 150 bucks. Its shit.

Thanks for fucking me guys!

Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney bangs on his kit in concert.

The day before April Fools’ Day, The Black Keys played a little prank.

Band members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney posted a humorous deepfake video on Instagram about how they were “the real Dan and Pat” and this clip was “not a panic press release from Warner Records.”

One day later — on April 1 — the “Tighten Up” rockers dropped the act and announced their exciting ‘International Players Tour’ in support of their upcoming album “Ohio Players” with special guest The Head And The Heart and Circa Waves on select dates.

Along the way, they’ll swing into New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

For fans who can’t wait to jam out to The Black Keys’ indelible blues rock live, tickets are available for all North American concerts on their fall 2024 world tour as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 5, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

The Black Keys new music

Ahead of the release of The Black Keys’ upcoming 12th studio album “Ohio Players,” they’ve dropped a trio of singles.

First, they put out the jubilant “Beautiful People” which will surely get even the crankiest fans stomping their feet and clapping along; it’s that infectious.

On Feb. 9, the pair delivered the gorgeous “I Forgot To Be Your Lover,” a bluesy ballad without a hint of schmaltz. In the next few years, expect to hear this one at weddings — it’s the perfect slow dance.

In tandem with the tour announcement, The Black Keys rolled out the stirring, radio-friendly “This Is Nowhere” that’s all bass and singalong choruses.

It should also be noted that big-name collaborators Noel Gallagher, Beck, and Booker T. Jones contributed to the record.

Want to hear the lead tracks ahead of the album’s April 5 release?

You can find “Ohio Players” here .

The Black Keys will take their upcoming album  Ohio Players across North America on the  International Players Tour this fall. The 31-date North American tour will kick off on September 17th in Tulsa, OK. For the next two months, The Black Keys will traverse the continent playing shows in Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Nashville, Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, and more. The Akron-bred duo will play two shows in their home state of Ohio—October 12th in Cleveland and October 24th in Columbus—and plenty of other cities before the tour wraps on November 12th in Detroit. Tickets for The Black Keys’  International Players Tour will go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 5th at 10 a.m. local time. American Express cardmembers will have first access to tickets via a pre-sale set to run from Tuesday, April 2nd at 10 a.m. local time through Thursday, April 4th at 10 p.m. local time. Ohio Players marks The Black Keys’ 12th album overall and first since Dropout Boogie in 2022. The 14-track LP hears the duo collaborate with a varied roster of contemporaries including Beck ,  Noel Gallagher ,  Greg Kurstin ,  Juicy J , and more.

“We had this epiphany: ‘We can call our friends to help us make music.’ It’s funny because we both write songs with other people—Dan all the time [as a solo artist and producer], me when I’m producing a record. That’s what we do,” drummer Patrick Carney said of the album. “What we wanted to accomplish with this record was make something that was fun. And something that most bands 20 years into their career don’t make, which is an approachable, fun record that is also cool.”

Pro Tips When Buying Your Tickets

First, on the day of the presale or general onsale (whichever you prefer), login to your Ticketmaster account ( go to my account or sign in located on the upper right corner of the page ) at least 15 minutes ahead of the sale time. If you don’t have one,  create one now .

Be sure to add your billing info (aka credit card info) before jumping into the digital queue for a quick check-out. Once the presale starts, remain in the digital queue. Only use one browser window because using multiple browsers or devices and multiple accounts with the same phone number can result in errors. Trust, it’s happened to us before! Don’t refresh your page, do be patient, don’t leave your page, do get those tickets!

What To Do If Tickets Are Sold Out?

If tickets sell out, your other option is to buy them via online resellers like VividSeats or StubHub. When all else fails, we prefer these resell options because both offer a 100% Guarantee. You can also purchase resell tickets through Ticketmaster’s resell program. Just search for the concert or event you want to attend , and see if they have any resell tickets available. We recommend you compare the three options and find out which works best for you.

Alternatively, you can hit it old school style and show up at the concert when the box office opens and wish upon a star that they release more tickets, or hopefully, another concert-goer has an extra ticket to sell at face-value or even giveaway for free. Trust, this happens more often than not! We’ve given away many tickets to sold-out shows simply because our +1 couldn’t make it.

Also, more standard tickets are often released via Ticketmaster 1-3 days leading up to the show date. We’ve seen it with Beyonce , Taylor Swift , Arctic Monkeys and many more! It’s a secret gatekeeped by many, but if you’re reading this, now you know! So be sure to set your calendar notifications!

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney reflect on their 20-year journey as The Black Keys. The duo elaborates on the various collaborations of their new album ‘Ohio Players,’ including Juicy J, Noel Gallagher from Oasis, Lil Noid and more. They also share some insight into their upcoming tour, what the fans can expect on the setlist and more!

Patrick Carney:

One night we were working here at Sunset and there’s a, there was, a very rare record that Dan wanted on eBay.

Dan Auerbach:

I had been waiting a year and a half to get it.

He didn’t know that I knew that it was on eBay, and like, there was three minutes left, and it started jacking the price up. I was like watching him sweat because-

He was behind me laughing. I didn’t know what he was laughing at and I was just freaking out because somebody else was bidding so heavy on this thing. I’ve been waiting like six days for this auction.

Hey, I’m Dan.

I’m Patrick, we’re The Black Keys and you’re watching Billboard News.

Lyndsey Havens:

Hey, I’m Lyndsey Havens for Billboard News. And we are here with the legendary hitmaking duo The Black Keys. What’s up, guys?

What’s up? How are you?

Album came out just a few weeks ago, how are we feeling?

We’re stoked. We’re very happy with the album. We’re excited for the year ahead.

So this is your 12th album, obviously, a long road to get here. Do you have any rituals before you release an album at this point? Or does it all sort of feel the same?

I heard that Chris Martin like … when he prepares to write, he likes to isolate himself and read all the bad reviews.

Keep watching to learn more!

The Black Keys Announce North American Tour Dates in 2024

Ohio-born The Black Keys to perform in October at Nationwide Arena

black keys on tour

The Black Keys , the Grammy-winning blues-rock duo hailing from Akron, will return to their home state during their 2024 North American tour, which will stop at Nationwide Arena on Oct. 24.

American Express Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public starting at 10 p.m. Tuesday through 10 p.m. Thursday. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general sale beginning at 10 a.m. Friday. Visit livenation.com and theblackkeys.com for all details.

The Black Keys played the Schottenstein Center in 2012 and their upcoming “International Players Tour” comes on the heels of two successful performances at SXSW earlier this month. The tour is in support of their new album, “Ohio Players,” due out on Friday. They will be joined on the road with indie folk band The Head and the Heart.

The pair — Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney — started as an indie act, recording in basements and producing their own records. After self-producing and recording their first four albums in makeshift studios, the duo recorded their fifth album, "Attack & Release" in 2008 in a professional studio, hiring producer Danger Mouse, who has worked with artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gorillaz, Norah Jones, Adele, A$AP Rocky and many others.

The Black Keys' commercial breakthrough came with the 2010 album, "Brothers," which along with its chart-topping single "Tighten Up," earned them two Grammy Awards. Their follow-up album and its hit single , "Lonely Boy," won three Grammys. Other hits include "Gold on the Ceiling" and "Little Black Submarines."

Several Black Keys songs have been used in film and television, including on series such as "How I Met Your Mother," "New Girl, "The Good Doctor" and "Sons of Anarchy."

Green Bay's Jim Runge has toured the world with rock stars. Now he's taking on his Parkinson's diagnosis with no regrets.

black keys on tour

GREEN BAY - The experiences Jim Runge has had across the world with some of the biggest names in music could fill a book.

During his 30 years as a tour manager, he’s been on the road with The Black Keys, Wilco, The Replacements, Lucinda Williams, Imagine Dragons, Empire of the Sun, Eels and Rickie Lee Jones, to name a few. He’s been on phone calls where it was just him, Mick Jagger and the Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney. He’s been kissed by Emmylou Harris and thanked by Nancy Sinatra. He’s gotten high with Willie Nelson.

The Ashwaubenon High School graduate and one of the founding fathers of Green Bay’s punk scene will be the first to tell you he has lived a charmed life.

Then in 2022, while on tour with Demi Lovato in South America, he noticed something wasn’t right. His walking was troublesome. He found himself staring at his computer for hours. He wasn’t sleeping.

“The stress level was mind-blowing,” he said.

He flew back to Green Bay and saw a doctor, thinking perhaps it was connected to a stroke he suffered in 2020. It was Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative condition of the brain associated with tremors, slowness of movement and balance problems.

“The main thing I have is the tremor in my hand and my walking. I haven’t fallen or anything,” said Runge, who turned 59 on Monday. “The biggest part is eventually I probably won’t be able to walk and then not be able to swallow and not be able to dress myself. That’s all coming.”

Known and respected in the touring industry for his openness and honesty — not one to sugarcoat — Runge shared his diagnosis on Facebook. Then this winter he asked his wife, Stacy Stanton-Runge, to help him create a YouTube video series he’s calling “In Real Life.” It’s a way for him to share memories of the local punk scene in its infancy, tell stories from the road that people so often ask him about, reconnect with friends and offer an unfiltered look of what it’s like to live with Parkinson’s.

It’s an oral history of his life. He wants to tell it while he can. In a powerful moment in the first episode of “IRL” on Feb. 5, he talked about how he expects the disease to gradually steal from him.

“Chances are, in, you know, five-plus years, I’ll be in a wheelchair, feeding tubes, not being able to swallow. That stuff has already happened already so it’s only a matter of time before ...” he says, before breaking down.

Stanton-Runge was there to comfort him, as she has been since they married in September 2020. They wed under the Mason Street bridge and streamed it live to 600 viewers on Facebook during the pandemic. Their first date included dinner with John Doe of influential punk band X.

They’re a team on the videos (the graphics are all her) and as they navigate the unpredictable path on which Parkinson’s will take them. Most people know somebody with the progressive disorder, but many aren’t familiar with the ins and outs of it. Sometimes people’s perception of it is worse than it is, Stanton-Runge said.

“It doesn’t kill you, but it does destroy your life, it does destroy your body,” Runge said.

The impact of “IRL” as an educational tool for others living with the disease will become more apparent as time passes, but six episodes in, it has already proven therapeutic for the two of them.

“I think both of us were feeling incredibly isolated and like we’re dealing with all of this really alone sometimes,” Stanton-Runge said. “Now he has people calling him and checking. It has created a more connected life.”

From punk shows at Northside Bowling Lanes to tour manager for The Black Keys, he's been a part of music history

Runge, who won the prestigious Road Warrior of the Year honors at the Pollstar Awards in 2014 for his work with The Black Keys, was fresh off his latest accolades when he and Stanton-Runge sat down at St. Michael’s Pub for an interview during an early-April snowstorm.

He became the first Lifetime Achievement recipient at the inaugural Bay Area Music Awards held in March to honor Green Bay music makers and supporters. Local music promoter Tom Smith, himself a nominee for the same award, bestowed the honor, wearing a No Response T-shirt as a nod to the punk band Runge formed in the ’80s.

Runge was moved by the recognition. He and Stanton-Runge both cried, and it was especially meaningful to have his son, mom, sister and cousin at The Tarlton Theatre that night. He left Green Bay for 30 years and somehow got all the credit when he came back home, he says.

He was among those who promoted Green Bay’s first punk shows at Northside Bowling Lanes, where bands like Suburban Mutilation, Art Thieves and The Minors became key players on the city’s early punk and hardcore scene in the early '80s. Those were the days when you could get beat up for playing original music, Runge said. If you were in a band, you had to play cover songs at the bars. The Northside shows were born out of having nowhere else to go.

“We were just looking for something to do and just accidentally created something much bigger than ourselves,” Runge said.

The five bands on the bill for the first show expected to be playing for no one but each other and their girlfriends. Somehow they had to make $50 to cover rent of the building.

“I remember sitting outside the window at Northside, we were on the ledge just watching parents dropping off kids. There were probably 100 kids at the first show. We were like, ‘Where did they come from?’” Runge said.

He’s an executive producer of “Green Blah! The History of Green Bay Punk Rock, The First Ten Years or So.” Filmmakers Chris Pretti and James Baker have been working on the documentary since December 2012 , conducting hundreds of hours of interviews, including two extensive talks with Runge. Information about its long-awaited premiere is expected to be coming soon, according to a March 29 update on the project’s Facebook page .

Runge also appears in the new music documentary “This Is a Film about The Black Keys,” which traces the highs and lows of Auerbach and Carney's journey from a basement jam session in Akron, Ohio, to rock stardom. He flew to Nashville, Tennessee, last year to be interviewed for the film, which premiered in March at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.

He toured with LL Cool J last year and hopes to get back out on the road

When Runge moved back home to Green Bay from Nashville in 2017, he had started to ease up some on his tour manager schedule. Then came the COVID-19 shutdown of the industry, his stroke and now Parkinson’s. It has put a significant strain on the couple’s financial situation. Friends turned his birthday party on Monday at the new  Orsetta Craft Kitchen & Bar in De Pere into a helping hand with a silent auction of donated items.

He’s had some discussions about going back out on the road this year if the right opportunity comes along. There’s some anxiety that comes with the thought of it, but he can’t retire and he doesn’t want to go on disability insurance yet. He’s been honest about his health situation when talking with acts about potential work. While Parkinson’s limits some of what he can do, it can’t touch his 30 years of invaluable experience in the industry.

He’s not looking to do major tours that play arenas and stadiums for months on end, come with rigorous travel itineraries and can sometimes mean three nights of no sleep. Last year, he went out with LL Cool J for six weeks in more of an assistant’s role and it went well.

“There’s definitely some stuff that has changed mentally and physically that I have to deal with but nothing that I couldn’t do with the right team and the right support,” he said.

Runge’s treatment in the first year after the Parkinson’s diagnosis included medication, but it was expensive and the side effects made him sick. His quality of life was such that he felt he wasn’t getting anything in return, so he stopped taking it.

“At this point, I’m just letting it go,” he said. “To be honest with you, I don’t want to live in a body where I’ve got to be fed by a tube and can’t walk and can’t swallow, but I’m still alive. I’d rather go when my body goes. She’s younger than me. I don’t want her to spend her life taking care of me and not enjoying life.”

The couple has plans to renew their wedding vows for their five-year anniversary in September 2025 — same place as before. With any luck, a train will unexpectedly roll through smack in the middle of the ceremony like it did in 2000. Some of their guests still talk about how much they loved that.

Runge is a man who treasures his friendships, and he knows he’s fortunate to have so many. Some are famous, some are scattered all over the planet and some date back to his youth in Green Bay. An introvert by nature, he’s always been the friend who finds a reason to gather people and then delights in watching the room come alive with conversations.

In their younger days he and fellow Green Bay punk figure Norb Rozek, aka Rev. Norb of Boris the Sprinkler, would joke that Rozek was the cool "Get off my lawn!" guy and Runge was the guy who would invite them into the house to listen to records.

Some of that kindness is coming back at him now. There’s seldom a day that goes by when he doesn’t hear from five or 10 friends, just checking in to see how he and Stanton-Runge are doing. It goes a long ways in keeping them positive on this latest journey. For Runge, it’s also a reminder of lucky he is.

It’s that whole charmed life thing again.

“I got to see the world and got to meet my idols and live this life that I couldn’t even imagine. I have no regrets,” he said. “I could die tomorrow and be like, 'I’ve done everything I wanted to.' Not that I don’t want to do more, but certainly there’s not a lot of my life that's 'God, I wish I would've been able to do that.' I’ve been pretty lucky.”

People arriving at the arena for the warmup show on Saturday

Thousands ‘fuming’ after tickets cancelled for Co-op Live arena show in Manchester

Rick Astley sang for staff, VIPs and press in test event at UK’s biggest indoor arena ahead of opening

Thousands of people due to attend the first event at the UK’s biggest indoor arena had their tickets cancelled at the last minute on Saturday.

Rick Astley took to the stage at the new 23,500-capacity Co-op Live arena, which opens officially on Tuesday, to perform to 11,000 arena workers, VIPs and press at a free test event.

However, it is thought as many as 4,000 tickets were cancelled, some just one hour before the show, leaving people “fuming”.

One gig-goer, Byron Edwards, posted on X: “Invitational tickets to the test event tonight cancelled just 90 minutes before doors open. What kind of shit show is this?”

Alison Stafford-Bentley said: “Thanks for cancelling tickets for tonight less than an hour before event is due to start. Absolutely fuming.”

Other teething problems included long queues for food, rows of seats not being ready and problems moving the crowds around the venue.

A Co-op Live spokesperson said: “We’re busy putting the finishing touches on Co-op Live, and we are looking forward to Co-op Live becoming the pre-eminent arena in the UK upon opening.

“As a part of the opening process, we are in the midst of an extensive protocol of testing critical procedures. To enable us to test the spaces effectively, we have made the difficult decision to reduce overall capacity for today’s test event. We apologise to affected guests and look forward to welcoming them to the Black Keys.”

Sited on the Etihad Campus next to the Manchester City football ground, the £365m venue will officially open on Tuesday with two shows by the comedian Peter Kay, for which there are still tickets available.

after newsletter promotion

Take That, the Killers, Eric Clapton, Barry Manilow and Olivia Rodrigo are all due to perform in the coming weeks, with plans to hold the MTV Europe music awards there in November.

Construction began in 2021 on the new venue, which is financed by the City Football Group – owned by the billionaire Emirati royal Sheikh Mansour – and the US sports and commercial real estate giant Oak View Group.

Harry Styles, who grew up 30 miles away, has a minor stake and advised on aspects of the design, which features four stacked black boxes with a similarly black interior.

The arena was welcomed by Manchester council, its leader, Bev Craig, saying the venue would “deliver a huge boost for our local economy and result in significant commercial and wider benefits for the city”.

However, questions were raised over whether there was a need for another large-scale music venue just two miles from the 21,000-capacity Manchester AO arena.

The two venues came to blows during the planning process, when the AO arena objected numerous times to Co-op Live proposals, including to what it described as a “simply unlawful” licensing application that would allow the new arena to serve alcohol until 2am at weekends and 24/7 on 25 occasions every year.

Co-op Live’s lawyers argued it was a “ludicrous and disingenuous” objection, at the meeting at Manchester town hall in February.

Co-op Live also faced criticism from the Music Venue Trust (MVT) for its potential impact on live music in Manchester. The venue had previously “declined” to sign up to a £1-per-ticket levy that funds the MVT’s “pipeline investment fund” for grassroots venues.

The MVT recently warned of the crisis facing grassroots music and arts venues, telling the Guardian “the whole ecosystem is collapsing” .
