Top 20 Amazing Places to Visit in July in the USA

Summer crowds can be an issue anywhere but if you are savvy enough you will find some amazing places to explore during this month. From my time traveling around this month, h ere are my favorite places to get you started…

1. Finger Lakes, New York State

In my opinion, the biggest draw here is the beautiful watery landscape punctuated by hundreds of stunning waterfalls that tumble between gorgeous forested escarpments from upwards of 150 ft.

The awe-inspiring Taughannock Falls that plunges from 215ft is one of the few you can swim in, and I loved it here! Much of the Waterfall action is centered around Lake Cayuga’s shores and Ithaca’s picturesque town, home of Cornell University.

I personally believe that Ithaca is everything you’d expect from an Ivy League Town, full of stunning historic brownstone buildings, and leafy avenues, and I would recommend exploring all the beautiful parks and gardens that will be in full bloom in July which are just beautiful!

2. Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbour is a picturesque town on Mount Desert Island; its shoreline sits along Frenchman’s Bay at the gateway of the beautiful Acadia National Park.

I’m a real foodie and found plenty to celebrate here – several top-class spots to dine and eat al fresco at one of the harbourside restaurants. 

For Nature Lovers I would highly recommend the Nature Cruises that sail regularly from Bar Harbour and offer an opportunity to spot porpoises, seals, eagles, and other marine life as well as elegant mansions and the scenic lighthouse at Egg Rock.

I suggest exploring the magnificent Acadia National Park, which spans 47,000 acres of rugged Atlantic coastline interspersed by dense woodland, rocky beaches, and granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the East Coast’s highest point. I couldn’t quite believe how incredible the scenery was here!

Olympic National Park lies within the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest. Stretching northwards towards the Canadian border the park is unique as it encompasses over 900,000 acres and three specific ecosystems; temperate rainforests, glaciated mountains, and wild Pacific coastline.

In July you are (almost!) guaranteed pleasant temperatures making it an excellent time of year for wildlife spotting, hiking, and water sports. In the summer there is also the opportunity for biking and stargazing on Hurricane Ridge, a beautiful unspoilt spot.

If you only have a short time there, I recommend booking yourself into the gorgeous Lake Quinault Lodge, a beautiful rustic lodge built in the 1920s that sits on the shores of the lake on the edge of the amazing Olympic National Forest.

4. Yachats, Oregon

The minute I set foot in Yachats, I loved it. Perched alongside Cape Perpetua on an unspoiled stretch of rugged Oregon Coastline, Yachats is remarkable and still a relatively hidden gem.

You’ll find tide pools, black basalt cliffs, fern gullies, and beautiful lighthouses amidst ocean waves crashing.

All the shop owners we chatted with were keen to tell us about all the amazing community events, from ClamBakes on the beach to the weekly summer farmers market. I didn’t want to leave and if you go I am fairly certain you won’t either!

5. Geneva-on-the-lake, Ohio

Established around 1869 Geneva-On-Lake I’m a big fan of this little holiday destination for all the family, situated in Geneva State Park on the shores of Lake Erie, I love how quaint and old-fashioned this place is.

You can bask in the July sunshine on one of the beautiful lakeside beaches, charter a boat, or experiment with any water sports from the marina.

For a real thrill, try the canopy tours, including sky bridges, zip lines, and adventure rope courses. One of my favorite experiences was a laid-back tour of local breweries and vineyards. You can also play golf or eat al fresco while watching a beautiful sunset.

Explore some of the cute little local shops, swim in the crystal lake waters, or hike on the trails for birdwatching. There are mini-golf and amusement arcades galore to keep the kids happy, too.

6. Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

This amazing park straddles the border between Northern Minnesota and Canada and consists of acres and acres of interconnecting lakes and waterways. The biggest landmass in the park is the Kabetogama Peninsula, which lies completely within its borders.

In my opinion, it’s all about the water, with many of the most beautiful parts only accessible by boat. To the east of the park is Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness, a stunning collection of forests, glacier lakes, and streams that draw millions of outdoor-loving visitors annually.

I highly recommend exploring all the 50 miles of trails on the peninsula, punctuated by amazing overlooks, but you can only reach them by boat.

• Seeing the Northern Lights (they can be seen all year round here).

7. Boston, Massachusetts

I personally think Boston in July is an extra special travel spot as it hosts the amazing Summer Pops Concerts and breathtaking Fourth of July fireworks over the River Charles. All this is loosely connected to Harborfest, a week-long celebration of the city’s unique maritime history that kicks off on Independence Day.

I would recommend chilling out on one of the amazing city beaches, grabbing a picnic and a bottle of wine, enjoying Shakespeare on the common, or taking in a smaller concert and discovering something new.

Boston is full of beautiful parks and a splendid esplanade, making it perfect for romantic summer strolls, I would suggest an outdoor movie under the stars. 

Of course, there’s also the wonderful food and craft beer scene that is all the more enjoyable when al fresco, harbor cruises, and whale watching, and I loved the amazing architecture both old and new!

8. Half Moon Bay, California

This is a gorgeous spot to spend a summer weekend or use as a base to explore the Northern Californian coastline. Its compact downtown area comprises attractive sandy shopfronts packed with boutique fayre, from unique arts and crafts to delicious wine and fantastic eateries!

For a quirky dining experience, I think Daddy’Os is perfect, based on an old rail car it serves up delicious comfort food to keep you going through the day. Half Moon Bay is surrounded by protected parks and beaches, including the Mavericks, a famous stretch of coastline that hosts a world-famous annual surf competition.

Other protected beaches such as Poplars are great spots for a sunset picnic. I think that the best thing though is these beaches don’t get crowded like some of the neighboring stretches Half Moon Bay maintains a calm and relaxed coastal vibe even in the peak summer months.

• Walking along the Coastside Trail which stretches nearly 5-miles long and offers gorgeous views overlooking the ocean.
• Wandering along Main Street and discovering an array of shopping boutiques and fun dining options.

9. St Michaels, Maryland

Once home to shipbuilding and oystering, St Michaels is a small waterfront town in Talbot County, Maryland, with about 1,000 people. Today I love that it still has the look and feel of a 19th-century seaport and is home to a charming Old Town filled with historic houses, I think this place is picture-postcard pretty! 

Topping the list of great summer vacation spots, it is known for its picturesque water bodies, which I think are needed during hot summer days with an average temperature of 31°C.

It’s scattered with varying fun side attractions, housing many attractive shops, bustling marinas, 18 acres of Chesapeake Bay and I loved the cute Maritime Museum.

Whether you want to go sailing on a yacht, dive to cool off on a hot afternoon or treat your taste buds to some mouth-watering local cuisines, I personally think St Michaels is a gorgeous place to be in the summer!

• Walking around Hollis Park for a quieter atmosphere after a busy day of sightseeing.

10. Buffalo River Arkansas, Arkansas

Outdoor enthusiasts are well catered for as 100 miles of trails traverse the river banks. The Hawksbill Crag trail is the only designated hiking trail that runs through the wilderness area, and it offers amazing views of the steep bluffs formed by the winding river gorge.

I think this place is seriously special! I loved the beautiful oak and hickory forests, ancient caves, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife, including a herd of over 500 free-ranging Elk.

There is plenty for history lovers too I would recommend visiting the eerie Rush Ghost Town and the even creepier Peppersauce Ghost Town at Calico Rock, both are designated historic districts with very chequered pasts!

• Soaring through the sky on a zipline on the Buffalo River Canopy Tour.

11. Traverse City, Lake Michigan

With a shoreline spanning 307 miles, I found choosing where to stay on Lake Michigan a little daunting, but I would personally suggest Traverse City in Northern Michigan.

It is an excellent base to explore some of the most beautiful beaches and nature reserves along the lakeshore. It’s a cool and vibrant city in  its own right.

I became a fan of the city as it offered amazing boutique shopping, microbreweries, food carts, gastro pubs, and fine dining, as well as an abundance of public art and amazing urban walking/biking/ boating trails, museums, and galleries.

The Old Mission Peninsula just a short drive from downtown has some beautiful parks that overlook the water or I would suggest enjoying some peace on Haserot Beach or taking a picnic to Bryant Park.

12. Beavers Bend Resort Park, Oklahoma

I loved this beautiful 1,300-acre resort park beside Broken Bow Lake in Southeastern Oklahoma. The park offers numerous activities , including a curated lineup of campfire programs, nature hikes, and arts and crafts classes, not to mention the 12 miles of hiking trails and roped-off swimming areas along the banks of the lake and river.

If you love the view from the water, I recommend hiring a Yakanoe, Kayak, or paddleboat. There’s a steam train, golf course, visitor center, and numerous gorgeous wooden cabins to stay in all nestled within the stunning mountainous terrain.

Don’t miss the sunset over the impressive Broken Bow Dam, but I think it’s a great place to return to nature for a long weekend as part of a bigger adventure!

13. Block Island, Rhode Island

If you’re looking for a romantic or relaxing getaway this summer, I think Block Island, which houses the historic Southeast Lighthouse, the natural clay cliffs of the Mohegan Buffs, and many beautiful beaches, is an incredible destination! 

Think sunbathing under warm weather of average temperatures of 25°C in July, taking a dip in any of the Island’s scenic beaches (notably Crescent Beach), sailing, bicycling, and hiking! 

I recommend heading there for the famous annual Fourth of July parade with an awesome fireworks display!

• Hiking up Mohegan Bluffs and seeing spectacular ocean views before heading down 141 steps to the beautiful beach.
• Visiting Ballard’s which is filled with fun, food, live music, sunshine, and Tiki bars.
• Hiring a bike and exploring the island to see the famous lighthouses, Great Salt Pond, and nature trails.

14. Grand Teton National Park , Wyoming 

Set amidst the spectacular Teton Mountain Range in Northwestern Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park, I love that this place offers breathtaking scenery, alpine lakes, and galore trails!

I recommend boat trips on Jenny Lake or the Massive Jackson Lake; more adventurous people  might enjoy rafting down the rapids. 

The 100-mile John D. Rockefeller Memorial Parkway is the perfect challenge for keen cyclists, taking in some of the park’s best wildlife and scenery.

Climbing enthusiasts can tackle Grand Teton itself, the tallest peak in the 40-mile Teton Range. My favorite highlight though was the spectacular sunsets!

• Soaking up the scenery on a 10-mile float trip down the Snake River in Jackson Hole.
• Driving up to Signal Mountain and admiring the Instagrammable panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
• Hiking along the trail by Jenny Lake, which took me to Inspiration Point and the enchanting Hidden Falls.

15. Lake Chelan, Washington

Beautiful Lake Chelan is between Seattle and Spokane and is a popular summer resort town in both cities. I would highly recommend a visit here! 

The Wenatchee National Forest, Twenty-Five Mile Creek State Park, and Lake Chelan State Park all sit along its shores. At its Northernmost point, it provides a gateway to the breathtaking wilderness of Northern Cascades National Park.

During the summer I personally think it provides the perfect place to experiment with various water sports, hang out on beautiful beaches, hike spectacular lakeside trails, and then I would suggest enjoy some local comforts at the Evening Farmers Market. It’s the best summer break for gorgeous, tranquil scenery!

16. Glacier National Park, Montana

In July the arresting scenery is ablaze with color and thrill-seekers will find the Middle Fork Whitewater at its best, with water levels perfect for an exhilarating raft ride! I love that the Flowers are in full bloom and the huckleberries are out and at their sweetest from mid-July!

In July all the trails and roads are open and I personally think it’s the perfect time for a drive along the scenic Going-To-The-Sun -Road.

There are miles of hiking trails traversing the park and a profusion of wildlife, including rare wolverines, Canadian Lynx black bears, grizzlies, and mountain lions!

Although July is usually warm and temperate, I recommend preparing for any eventuality as the weather can change on a whim, and parts of the park are incredibly remote!

• Driving along the going-to-the-sun road, one of the most scenic journeys in the park that features an array of viewpoints.
• Catching a sunrise at the hidden Two Medicine landmark, which was an unforgettable experience!
• Dipping my feet in Lake McDonald to cool down on a hot day.

17. Ely, Minnesota

The historic place is home to many iron ore mines, Ely is a city in Minnesota, with an estimated 3,500 population and a temperature of 27°C in summer in July.

Famous for housing the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, it’s one of my favorite destinations for lakeside activities, including canoeing! 

It also features the North American Bear Center, a one-of-a-kind nature museum housing American black bears, and the International Wolf Centre dedicated to educating the public about wolves. I love that Ely is a place to visit for a free pass to fun activities during the summer and for educative and enlightening interactions.

• Going for a hike along the Kawishiwi Falls Trail and admiring the impressive waterfalls.

18. Monterey, California

I was super keen to see Monterey and Cannery Row Historic District is now a major draw and has been completely restored, within its red brick walls I was a big fan of its boutique hotels, independent shops, and plenty of relaxed places to sample local seafood whilst enjoying the waves and ocean views.

I recommend walking through Monterey State Historic Park to see some of the area’s oldest and most significant buildings, including the cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo, the oldest in California.

I loved that plenty of outdoor pursuits are available nearby, with excellent surfing and wildlife along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail and The Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary .

• Wandering around the setting for John Steinbeck’s novel, Cannery Row Downtown, which is filled with shops and restaurants.
• Taking in the coastline views at Point Sur Lightstation, a historic landmark overlooking the ocean.
• Checking out the Monterey Museum of Art , which is home to over 14,000 pieces.

19. Marquette, Michigan

Home to expansive miles of breathtaking trails for hiking and biking, beautiful inland lakes giving way to larger acres of water bodies and scenic shorelines. In my opinion, it’s the ideal spot for outdoor but low-key summer fun far away from crowds in more typically popular summer resorts.

History and art lovers are not left out, as the area is also home to several historic lighthouses. I would suggest a tour that takes you back to a different decade. There’s also a Marquette Arts and Culture Centre for unrivaled art exhibits, thought-provoking lectures, and an awesome musical series.

20. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Mount Rainier National Park spans 369 sq miles of incredible scenery around the imposing 14,411 ft stratovolcano at its center.

I’m a huge fan, and I love that the foothills are a fantastic blend of subalpine meadows, valleys, and waterfalls cascading from rocky plateaus. The scenery is seriously spectacular here! 

From July through August wildflowers transform the Paradise area of the park in an abundance of color and the warmer temperatures make it the perfect time for hiking. There are numerous trails to explore depending on your preferences, whether wildlife, uninterrupted views, or rushing falls.

Carefree summer beach days are finally upon us. You don't have to travel to far-flung destinations like Mallorca, Spain, or Bali, Indonesia, to find a summer beach paradise.

The U.S is home to many diverse waterfront landscapes, from breezy sand dunes and rocky cliffside shorelines to cityscape sands and secret beach coves.

No matter where you live (even if you're landlocked), there's likely a beautiful beach near you, though it may not be oceanfront. You don't need an ocean to find the perfect stretch of sands, thanks to waters like Lake Tahoe and the Great Lakes.

Plus, you may just be able to avoid crowded airports and flight delays by taking a summer beach road trip closer to home.

From California 's surf spots to charming East Coast nature reserves, here are 20 of the best sandy shores in destinations around the U.S. for your summer beach adventure.

Cowell Ranch State Beach, California

With California's more than 400 public beaches, narrowing down a summer beach escape in the Golden State can be challenging. Those who want a serene beach experience should head to one of the quieter, less crowded beaches of Northern California's Half Moon Bay.

A short hike down from Highway 1 takes you to a staircase that leads to Cowell Ranch State Beach, a rugged stretch of sands flanked by rocky bluffs. You may spot a variety of flora and fauna, even seals, from the shore.

Kaihalulu Beach, Hawaii

Hawaii's islands are ringed by endless beaches, so it may be hard to decide which one to try. However, red sand sets Kaihalulu Beach on the island of Maui apart from the rest.

The steep, narrow trail to the beach can be difficult and even slippery. However, it offers a unique, crowd-free opportunity to enjoy the blue waves crashing against the rich, colorful sand.

North Avenue and Montrose beaches, Illinois

One of Chicago's finest city beaches, North Avenue Beach offers the refreshingly cold waters of Lake Michigan set against a perfect view of the city's skyline rising up behind the golden sand.

With an array of summer festivals like Volleywood, the Chicago Air and Water Show and various music events, North Avenue Beach's allure lasts all summer. If you tire of the sand and lake, visit the nearby Navy Pier or rent bicycles and ride them along the city's lakefront.

A few miles farther north, Montrose Beach is a popular locals beach (it has a fun dog-friendly section) backed by a tranquil bird sanctuary. There are paddleboards and kayaks for rent, a marina for boat rentals, a golf course nearby, and much-loved The Dock beach bar with vacation vibes and live music.

Sand Harbor Beach, Nevada

On the northeastern shores of Lake Tahoe, Sand Harbor is a cove dotted with boulders offering visitors idyllic lake and mountain views. Swim in the refreshing, clear waters, paddle out by kayak to admire the large rocks located along the shoreline or enjoy a picnic at one of the tables.

If it gets too hot, retreat to the shade of the cedar and Jeffrey pines that line the beach. Visit during the annual summer Shakespeare Festival, which sets up a beachfront stage for performances.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Michigan

If the name sounds familiar, maybe it's because "Good Morning America" named this national lakeshore the Most Beautiful Place in America. The park likely earned the accolade thanks to its towering sand dunes that perfectly contrast the sharp-blue waters of Lake Michigan (and the smaller Glen Lake), as well as the surrounding green forest.

It's just a 45-minute drive from Traverse City, where you can stop for the famous annual Cherry Festival, which includes parades, races, air shows and musical performances.

Sagg Main Beach, New York

Sagg Main combines the highbrow feel of the Hamptons with the relaxed comfort of a neighborhood beach. The beach feels secluded, backed by Sagaponack Pond, a wild, natural area.

It's also slightly closer to Manhattan and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) than some of the other beaches in East Hampton or Montauk, making it easy for city-dwellers or travelers to arrive. AvGeeks landing late at JFK should consider spending a night at the TWA Hotel before heading east to the beach.

Long Beach Peninsula, Washington

Stretching for almost 28 miles, aptly named Long Beach is one of the country's longest continuous beaches. There are seven access points to different sections of the beach, which never feels crowded.

Although the water is chilly for swimming, it's an incredible beach for a good long stroll. The wooden boardwalk is starkly different from busy U.S. boardwalks, like the one in Venice Beach, California. It stands in pure tranquility, suspended above the sand dunes offering stunning sea views.

Visitors can also enjoy the summer beach breeze during the Washington State International Kite Festival.

Grant Park Beach, Wisconsin

Though it's just a quick 20-minute drive from central Milwaukee, Grant Park Beach feels like a hidden refuge. It's accessible by car or a short, relatively easy hike along a wooded trail. Visitors can swim in cold Lake Michigan and take advantage of beach amenities like spots to get snacks, children's play areas, volleyball nets and even a nearby golf course.

Combine a beach day with a visit to Milwaukee's famous annual Summerfest, which features an impressive lineup of both well-known and up-and-coming musical artists and groups.

Mustang Island, Texas

A barrier island on the Gulf coast of Texas, Mustang is home to 18 miles of sandy shoreline. Mustang Island State Park is an ideal spot to explore the quiet, protected sands and experience the Mustang Island Paddling Trail, a collection of kayaking routes that run through shallow fishing waters.

For a little more action, the 6-mile Port Aransas Beach is close to Fishermans Wharf Pier and the observation tower at Roberts Point Park, where you can sometimes spot dolphins and other marine life.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

This beach is just an hour and a half from Portland. The wild, grassy shoreline and the picture-perfect view of famous Haystack Rock in the ocean are simply stunning.

You can plan a whole vacation around visiting this beach, as the charming town of Cannon Beach offers quaint shops, gourmet dining options and beach bars, all ideal for a relaxing trip to the seaside. Note: Even in summer, it may be too cold to swim.

Tybee Island, Georgia

If rainy weather ruins your Tybee Island beach day, Savannah's historical center is just 18 miles away. When the sun is shining, though, wandering the barrier island's long stretch of soft sand or along the picturesque boardwalk is the perfect way to spend the afternoon. History buffs will appreciate a visit to the lighthouse, which dates back to 1736.

Coast Guard Beach, Massachusetts

Enjoy Cape Cod's serene sands at the 20-mile-long Coast Guard Beach. Fans of Henry David Thoreau should visit, as he deemed this spot the "Great Beach." It's also only about an hour-and-a-half drive away for Boston residents.

The area is part of the saltwater Nauset Marsh, home to a number of shorebird species, as well as marine life such as sharks and seals. Active beachgoers can swim, surf or boogie board in the Coast Guard Beach waters or bike along the marsh paths.

Crescent Bay Beach, California

Bordered by cliffs, Crescent Bay Beach is a small cove in Southern California. A favorite with bodysurfers when the waves are high, the beach also attracts snorkelers when the ocean is calm. Keep your eyes peeled for seals and sea lions hanging out on famous Seal Rock, about 350 feet offshore.

Disney fans, take note: This beach is only 25 miles away from Disneyland .

Goosewing Beach Preserve, Rhode Island

Goosewing Beach Preserve is a serene mix of shoreline, dunes and a coastal pond. What the beach lacks in amenities, it makes up for in natural beauty (think pebbly, silver sands and many species of birds flying over the foamy swells). The preserve's sandy bluffs and grassy dunes provide a true escape from the daily grind.

The preserve charges a parking fee per car ($18 on weekdays and $23 on weekends). Proceeds go to protect this delicate ecosystem, which is home to many threatened shorebirds.

Kill Devil Hills Beach, North Carolina

AvGeeks should head to Kill Devil Hills Beach in the Outer Banks. It's the actual site of the Wright brothers' first flight.

Brightly colored homes line the long, sandy shore, just a short drive from the Wright Brothers National Memorial, featuring a large statue, museum and even a special junior aviation center with children's activities.

If you'd like to visit other coastal stretches, the Outer Banks is home to myriad other summer beach options.

Black Beach, Minnesota

You don't have to visit Spain's volcanic Canary Islands to experience a black-sand beach. One of the most unique beaches in the U.S., Black Beach is famous for its glimmering black sand along the shore of Lake Superior.

The sand isn't volcanic, though. Its dark color is a result of taconite, a mining substance in the lake water. Either way, this dark-sand beach, complete with red-rock hills and verdant foliage, is unlike any other.

Clearwater Beach, Florida

It's hard to pick a top beach in Florida , but Clearwater is always a traveler favorite. The 3-mile stretch of powdery sand and turquoise water should be enough to satisfy sun-seekers year-round. There's plenty to do, including parasailing and a beachfront promenade ideal for walking, rollerblading or biking.

Enjoy gorgeous hues as the sun sets. Once evening hits, there are almost endless choices for oceanfront dining and cocktails.

Reid State Park Beach, Maine

The 770-acre Reid State Park is home to Maine's first state-owned saltwater beach. Besides sandy beaches, which are a rarity along Maine's mostly pebble-and-rock coastline, the park has abundant plant and bird life, sand dunes, marshes and rock formations. It's also one of the state's most popular surfing areas.

Combine a summer beach trip with a hot air balloon adventure in Lewiston (a one-hour drive from Reid State Park) for the Great Falls Balloon Festival, in addition to other Maine summer festivities like lobster and clam bakes.

Dauphin Island, Alabama

Dauphin Island charges a small fee to visit its beaches ($10 per car). Besides swimming off the tranquil beaches, you can hike trails, visit a bird sanctuary and check out historical monuments, including cannons.

It's known as the sunset capital of Alabama. From the shores of Dauphin Island, visitors can enjoy some of the most colorful and peaceful sunsets in the southern U.S.

Indiana Dunes, Indiana

The Indiana Dunes span both a national and a state park. Both are home to golden sands, blustery dunes and a number of hiking trails.

With summer events like bird-watching and stargazing meetups, sand sculpture contests and s'mores days, there are lots of activities if you get bored swimming, lounging on the beach, walking the trails or frolicking on the dunes. Those who want to bring lunch or stay the night can enjoy the designated areas for picnicking and camping, too.

Looking for summer fun beyond your neighborhood cookout? From national parks to quaint towns to scenic beachfront destinations, the following locales are excellent spots for a vacation in July. Travelers can expect warm temperatures, little precipitation and a bevy of things to do, see and experience. We weighed these factors and more to come up with the best places to visit in July. Olympic National Park

With highs between the low 60s and mid-70s and an abundance of daylight hours, the outdoors call during the summertime in Norway's capital city. Take a ferry or bus to spend a day at the Bygdøy peninsula, which boasts picturesque views of the area's natural landscape, as well as museums, beaches and walking and running trails for travelers to enjoy. Oslo visitors can also lounge on one of the urban beaches found around the city or explore the more than 60 miles of inlet at Oslo Fjord.

July is one of the busiest times of year to visit this popular Washington state national park. With low precipitation and average temperatures sitting comfortably in the 60s and 70s, it is the perfect time to explore must-see sights like Hurricane Ridge and Hoh Rain Forest, which is thought to be one of the quietest destinations in the United States. Just keep in mind, you won't be the only one hiking through the spectacular scenery. Avoid the crowds by visiting outside of the park's peak hours (between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.).

Zanzibar, a Tanzanian archipelago, is an ideal, relaxed vacation spot if you're looking for coral white sands, turquoise waters and abundance of marine life. July, which sits in the dry season, is a perfect time to hit the beach. Beyond the sand, visit the UNESCO–listed Stone Town to see where African, Arabic, Indian and European cultures collide. Music lovers can visit the Freddie Mercury Museum, dedicated to the legendary musician who was born here. And no trip to Zanzibar would be complete without a spice tour to learn more about the rich history of the island.

Situated at the foot of the Swiss Alps and on the shoreline of Lake Geneva, Montreux, Switzerland, is a picturesque musical muse destination in July. The city hosts the Montreux Jazz Festival throughout the month, and close to 250,000 music lovers descend upon the area for endless days of jazz. Montreux was immortalized in the final Queen album, and visitors can snap pictures of Freddie Mercury's statue by the lake. Known for its luxurious resorts and striking pink sand beaches (Horseshoe Bay Beach and Warwick Long Bay are two visitor favorites), this British overseas territory beckons to travelers seeking a relaxing summer vacation. Average temperatures in Bermuda hover in the mid-80s in July, making it an ideal time for engaging in water activities like swimming and snorkeling. This is also one of the best times for fishing on the island – July draws anglers from all over the world looking to compete in the Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship.

There are many reasons to visit Juneau in July. Not only is this the warmest month of the year (daytime highs sit in the low 60s), but the days are long and the city's attractions, some of which close in the winter, are open for business. July is also prime whale watching season in Alaska's capital city and one of the best times of year for bear viewing. Although you'll spend more on airfare and accommodations by visiting during Juneau's peak season, you'll also be able to enjoy must-see sights like the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Gardens without the frigid temperatures.

Considered one of the best summer vacation destinations in the U.S., Seattle offers travelers plenty to do in July. With highs around the mid-70s, you'll stay comfortable on a sightseeing boat tour to admire the Emerald City's picturesque skyline. Plus, you can enjoy live entertainment during the three-day Capitol Hill Block Party. Of course, Seattle offers many notable attractions, such as the Space Needle, Pike Place Market and Chihuly Garden and Glass. One of Oregon's top travel destinations also happens to be home to one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Cannon Beach, a small coastal town in northwest Oregon, boasts nearly 4 miles of sandy beach characterized by its spectacular rock formations (including Haystack Rock), tide pools and robust birdwatching opportunities. In July, crowds descend upon the area and hotels book up fast, but this is a small price to pay for the pleasant daytime temperatures in the mid-60s and low chance of rain.

Summer brings warm weather and a full roster of events to this southern California beach town. Although this means longer lines and inflated room rates, July is one of the best times of year to enjoy activities like snorkeling at La Jolla Cove or strolling through Balboa Park, home of the famed San Diego Zoo. Visitors can also take advantage of July's many other offerings, including the annual Over the Line Tournament and the San Diego Comic-Con.

With plenty of street cafes, beer gardens and parks to visit and highs in the upper 70s, July is a perfect time to venture outdoors in Berlin. Tiergarten – the city's largest park and home to the Berlin Zoo – boasts 500-plus acres of green space and is an ideal place to walk, run or grab food and drinks at one of the many eateries found in the area. Popular music and wine festivals and pleasant weather characterize the month of July in Porto, Portugal. With average highs in the mid-70s, travelers can enjoy sightseeing in the Ribeira district, strolling across famous bridges like the Dom Luís I Bridge and wine tasting (Porto's namesake port wine is a must-try) without the stifling heat and humidity that other European cities see in summer. For visitors who need a break from the sunshine, the city offers the ornate Livraria Lello bookstore and the National Museum Soares dos Reis, Portugal's first public art museum.

Travel to this small college town in the south of France if your perfect summer getaway includes meandering down tree-lined boulevards and sipping coffee at charming cafes. July brings an influx of tourists, causing airfare prices and room rates to spike. But if you can swing it, the comfortable temperatures in the 70s and 80s make hiking Mont Sainte-Victoire and exploring popular thoroughfares like Cours Mirabeau a treat. What's more, the region's famed lavender is typically in peak bloom this month, so take a day trip to the surrounding countryside for a glimpse of the fragrant fields of purple.

Known for its inhabitants' longevity and as the birthplace of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, Ikaria is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea. Its relaxed atmosphere makes it an ideal place to visit in July. The island's most famous beach, Seychelles, whose crystal-clear waters are surrounded by cliffs and rocks, is a picturesque place to spend the day. You can also learn about the island's history at the Archaeological Museum of Agios Kirykos. But July's most unique draws are Ikaria's renowned summer festivals, where visitors can dance, sample Ikarian wine and party with the locals well into the morning.

Sitting about 700 miles east of Madagascar, Mauritius draws sun-seeking travelers in droves. When you're not relaxing on the African island's pristine white sand beaches, go for a ride on the longest zip line in the Indian Ocean or explore Black River Gorges National Park's numerous hiking trails. With so much natural beauty to behold (think: verdant rainforests, stunning lagoons and breathtaking waterfalls) it's easy to see why Mauritius is lauded as one of the world's best island destinations . There’s never been a better way to beat the heat than to head to the sensational coastlines and calm waters that nab a starring role in our dreams. Dive into our features to learn more about  the biggest beach party you might not have heard of , how swimwear impacts climate change , the remote Tahitian village preparing for the world stage , and the best beaches in the United States.

Just how many miles of shoreline does the United States have? About 95,471, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration —and while every square inch is striking in its own way, certain regions of the country are blessed with the most beautiful sands and surf. We’ve zeroed in on the absolute best options from coast to coast, so all you have to do is decide which beachy vibe speaks to your sea-loving soul. 

Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida

For a passport-free vacation that oozes Caribbean vibes, head to Destin-Fort Walton Beach. Located along the Florida Panhandle and the Gulf of Mexico, this beach boasts sugar-fine sand made of pure quartz crystal. The result? Twenty-four miles of pristine, soft white powder that doesn’t get hot underfoot but reflects the sunlight through the ocean to create an emerald hue in the crystal-clear waters. 

If you like to spend your time in the water instead of on the sand, there are plenty of opportunities for surfing, along with SCUBA and snorkel excursions. County lifeguards watch over the beach but look for daily beach flag updates for the latest on the water currents and recommendations for swimming that day.

Poipu Beach, Kauai

Even when it’s raining on the rest of the island, you can almost always count on a sunny day at Kauai’s Poipu Beach on the South Shore—and this can make the perfect backdrop for the most spectacular rainbows. This crescent-shaped beach is two beaches in one, separated by a tombolo. To the left of the sandbar is a shallow area protected from waves and dotted with lava rock, perfect for young families wishing to play in the water. And to the right, you’ll find the ideal spot for body boarding, snorkeling, and surfing.

You’ll no doubt find a few endangered Hawaiian monk seals napping in the sand (please stay at least 100 feet away from them and avoid flash photography), and during the winter months, you may even see humpback whales in the distance. There are lifeguards on duty and facilities with restrooms and showers. Bring a cooler to enjoy a bite to eat at the picnic tables.

Arcadia Beach, Oregon

Sure, the Oregon Coast is nearly synonymous with Cannon Beach because of its iconic Haystack Rock, but another gorgeous beach lies just 2 miles to the south: Arcadia Beach. “Breathtaking” is the only word that can truly capture the moment you first step onto Arcadia Beach, especially if you’re lucky enough to visit during low tide. On any given day, you’ll find families bicycling on the mile-long beach, children flying kites and dogs catching frisbees, and people playing in the surf or exploring the rock formations and tidepools. In the distance, you’ll still get to see a glimpse of Haystack.

The parking lot is small but often has room, even on sunny summer days—from there, it’s just a short walk down to the beach (you’ll encounter a section of steps). There are picnic tables and facilities. Keep an eye on the ocean levels, as the tides can change quickly.

Emerald Isle Beach, North Carolina

North Carolina’s Crystal Coast offers 85 miles of sandy beaches—while it’s all stunning, make your way to Emerald Isle Beach for its 12 miles of pristine shoreline and views of the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the average temperature hovers around 80 degrees with more than 100 feet of visibility in the crystal-clear waters.

The sand here is a beachcomber’s paradise, littered with seashells of various sizes and colors, while the entire Crystal Coast is known as a wreck diver’s dream due to all of the sunken vessels in the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Be sure to visit The Point at the end of the Isle, as this tailed-off sandbar offers panoramic views of Bogue Sound, Bogue Inlet, and Bear Island, along with spectacular sunsets. Lifeguards are on the beach stand during peak season (April to September, also when paid parking is in effect), and most beach access points have a bathroom.

La Jolla Cove, California

Snorkelers looking for a protected area that’s teeming with marine life—read: bright orange garibaldi, purple sea urchin, sea cucumbers, anemones, and starfish—should put San Diego’s La Jolla Cove high on their bucket list. This small golden crescent beach is tucked between dramatic sandstone bluffs, and it’s one of the most photographed beaches in SoCal due to its beauty (no surprise, considering La Jolla means “the Jewel”). You’re also sure to find many sea lions and seals sunbathing, as these calm waters are protected from ocean swells and currents.

Since the beach is only a 20-minute drive north from downtown San Diego, it gets pretty crowded in the summer; consider visiting in the fall instead (temps will still average 75 degrees). Parking can be difficult, though there is limited street parking if you’re lucky enough to nab a spot.

Ka'anapali Beach, Hawaii

Is chilling on a beach on Maui’s West Shore your idea of the perfect day? Kaanapali is a three-mile stretch of white sands and crystal-clear waters and one of the best beaches in Maui . One of the most famous attractions here is the nightly cliff-diving ceremony, held at sunset off the beach’s most northern cliffs (Puu Kekaa, or Black Rock)—it’s a reenactment of a feat by Maui’s revered King Kahekili, in which he tested his warriors’ loyalty and bravery.

The shallow waters here are great for snorkeling, and it’s common to see whales off the coast during winter. Some beachgoers might not like the crowds or the fact that this beach is near so many resorts and a shopping mall, but this beach remains one of the best in the country.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

As one of the longest beaches in the world—clocking in at 60 miles long—Myrtle Beach spans several communities and two state parks. There’s a wide variety of access points, each with a different atmosphere as you travel along the coast, from busy spots packed with action to the laid-back sections perfect for relaxing, depending on your preference. Refreshing year-round ocean breezes make this beach pleasant even in the heat of the summer.

If you pay to enter either state park (Myrtle Beach State Park or Huntington Beach State Park), you can park for free; otherwise, you’ll find paid parking at meters and in garages or lots. Most segments offer public bathrooms, and there are more than 2,000 restaurants along the coastline to ensure your belly stays full during a long day at the beach.

Coronado Beach, California

Take a little tour across San Diego Bay via the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, and you’ll arrive at Coronado Beach. Here, you’ll find fine golden sand that sparkles with flecks of the mineral mica against the iconic backdrop of the historic Hotel del Coronado. There are several different beaches, including Coronado Central Beach, dog-friendly North Beach, Silver Strand State Beach, Glorietta Bay Beach, and Coronado Shores Beach.

Because the ends of the beach butt up against military property, it’s not uncommon to see the Navy Seals training and fighter jets flying drills in the skies above. Most of the beaches offer restrooms and shower facilities. Look for free parking on Ocean Boulevard and at Ferry Landing Marketplace.

Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

Looking for the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world? Look no further than Padre Island National Seashore in Corpus Christi, Texas. The park protects 66 miles of coastline,  providing a haven for sea turtles and nearly 400 species of birds. Malaquite Beach on the Gulf of Mexico side is the main beach visitors frequent because this is where the visitor center is located (restrooms, showers, and picnic tables are available) and where the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle releases take place from mid-June through August. Bird Island Basin, a smaller beach on the Laguna Madre side, is a popular spot for windsurfers.

No matter which side of the beach you choose, both are pet-friendly. But because this is a protected seashore, amenities are limited, so you’ll need to plan accordingly—the nearest food, gas stations, and hotels are located 12 miles from the entrance. Five campgrounds are open year-round, and spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis (though there are no RV hook-ups in the park).

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Some beaches feel inaccessible, but not Virginia Beach—this 35-mile stretch is located within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population. Its popularity is partly due to its three-mile Oceanfront Boardwalk, the perfect place to bike, blade, or stroll while gazing out at the Atlantic shoreline. Of course, with a beach this size, it’s broken up into several beaches, including the quieter Croatan Beach, swimming-friendly Chesapeake Bay Beach, The Oceanfront (where you’ll find the Boardwalk), kid-friendly Grommet Island Park, and secluded Sandbridge Beach. Honestly, there’s something for every beachgoer style within Virginia Beach.

During peak season, lifeguards are posted along the shoreline. Virginia Beach welcomes your four-legged fur babies year-round, with some seasonal restrictions. Parking is plentiful via city garages, lots, and metered street parking (free from Nov. 1 through March 31). Virginia Beach also serves as a flight training zone for the U.S. Navy's East Coast master jet base, so don’t be alarmed if you hear the roar of jet engines as pilots practice maneuvers.

Bowman's Beach Park, Florida

There’s no shortage of shells for visitors to comb through at Bowman’s Beach Park, one of the most stunning and popular beaches on Sanibel Island in Southwest Florida. The beach is about a quarter-mile or so from the parking lot ($5 an hour), and you’ll walk along a footbridge to get to the white sands. The picturesque stretch of beach has calm, serene waves perfect to swim in, plus there’s a playground for children, a sand volleyball court, short hiking trails, and great fishing spots. Bring your kayak if you’re so inclined, as there’s a launch pad.

Bowman’s Beach has everything you need facilities-wise, including restrooms and an outdoor shower, picnic tables and charcoal grills. Many visitors prefer to wear water shoes instead of running around barefoot, because of all the shells.

Coligny Beach, South Carolina

It doesn’t get much more idyllic than Hilton Head Island’s Coligny Beach —the white sands are perfect for frolicking in the surf and soaking up some sunshine. From the end of Pope Avenue, follow the boardwalk down to the pristine sand and straight into the Atlantic. You can walk for miles, dip in the shallow waters, or bike along the hard-packed sand. You may see some tidal pools at low tide, and turtle nesting season runs between May and October.

Coligny Beach is fully equipped with outdoor showers, changing rooms, restrooms, Adirondack chairs, swings, water fountains for kids to run through, and shaded pavilions. There’s even free Wi-Fi. The shopping plaza is packed with dining and shopping options to round out your perfect beach day.

Driftwood Beach, Georgia

There’s a reason scenes from "The Walking Dead" were filmed on Jekyll Island: Driftwood Beach is almost otherworldly, in a hauntingly beautiful, strangely romantic, graveyard-of-dead-trees sort of way. This barrier island has the feel of a secluded, remote getaway. Yet, it’s only about an hour from Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. Driftwood Beach is a particularly secluded spot nestled between cool blue water and majestic live oaks—and it gets its name from the gigantic and gnarly driftwood branches adorning the sands. Don’t forget your camera, as you’ll want to do an impromptu photoshoot in this Instagram-worthy spot.

Public parking is available, and leashed pets are welcome, but visitors looking for restrooms and picnic facilities will need to visit one of the island's other beach parks.

The travel booking site ranked next month's most-searched beach destinations — and here's what took the No. 1 spot.

With summer upon us and countries lifting travel restrictions , international beach destinations are once again gaining popularity. In fact, demand for sun-drenched beaches is now outpacing pre-pandemic levels in "double- sometimes triple-digit percentages," according to new data released by Expedia to Travel + Leisure . Most travelers plan on heading to the shores of the Dominican Republic in July, as the travel booking hub revealed that the most-searched beach destination for July is Punta Cana.

Spanning 30 miles of pristine white sand beaches, this picture-perfect area on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic is beloved for its numerous beaches that run the gamut from bustling tourist spots lined with resorts to more remote and undeveloped stretches of sand.

The area's crown jewel is Bavaro Beach, a heavenly stretch of white sand where swaying palms and turquoise waters make for the dreamiest of landscapes. Nature enthusiasts will love Cabeza de Toro, a Blue Flag beach, home to a nature reserve and the serene Bavaro lagoon, where marine wildlife is thriving. It's the perfect spot to go deep-sea diving as tour operators here also offer exciting nurse shark and sting ray swimming excursions.

And if you're into water sports like surfing, head to Macao Beach, a remote and underdeveloped stretch of sand where off-shore winds deliver consistent surf throughout the year and some of the best waves on the island. There's a surf school right on the beach , which means its suitable for both beginners and experienced wave-riders.
