Dundee branch appalling service

My holiday to Barcelona booked through the dundee branch was cancelled and unfortunately I made the mistake of booking another holiday whilst on the phone to Alan. This holiday cost more and I was reassured I had till the end of the month to pay it. I ended up being harassed whilst on a current holiday however via missed calls, voicemails and emails to pay this extra amount! Tried to cancel the new holiday and was told it would cost £180, despite being a regular customer and alan not even replying to my last email asking if the fee could be waived just this once. Wont book with them again and won't recommending them to anyone.

Hotel in San Francisco

Hotel accommodation in San Francisco is not fit for rats. Ramsay notified us to get new accommodation for 4 people, 3 nights elsewhere, at our expense of $1400. Now they are refusing to reimburse us at our loss. Not answering emails either

Great service and deal

Really quick and easy to book! Amazing deal and service couldn’t have been better. Really friendly and all booked with ease.

Excessive Booking Fee

After using them over a period of many years, I was quite disappointed to realise that they charged me what seems an over inflated booking fee for a return flight to France. I went in and told them the airline and times I wished to book and it appears that they charged me c£50 for this! When I queried this I was brushed off with a comment akin to "you should have brought this up when booking." Booking fee was never mentioned at time of booking and no invoice regarding booking fee was issued. When I asked about a itemised invoice I was basically told I wasn't getting one and this from a "Manager" who was on the phone to another customer at the time! Not impressed.

AVOID!!! Booked my holiday to Thailand 9 months ago and paid it up (fully paid 3 months ago) after booking I had to request a receipt after hearing absolutely nothing for about 2 weeks. Then I received an invoice that could only be described as a child had typed it up on Microsoft word it was absolutely laughable to say the least. Following this farce I decided to just let it go and move on and fully paid the holiday and heard absolutely nothing from then on. As of today I fly out in 7 weeks so I contacted the Stirling branch to find out my package no longer existed and they’ve known for 10 days but didn’t want to contact as there was no alternative??? Now I’ve to wait 30 days for a refund?! I WILL be taking this further. Do not spend a penny with this company!!

Dundee Branch - Customer Service

Booked a trip to Copenhagen with a friend, which was cancelled by EasyJet (obviously not RWT’s fault). Had to chase the Dundee branch twice for our options going forward, responded to their email accepting one of the options offered. 7 days later and we still had no confirmation from RWT. Chased again and told by them they hadn’t actioned our request to rebook yet and now it is more expensive. Have challenged the cost increase with the manager as we responded in time to get the price quoted. We wrote a detailed emailing explaining all the communication issues we’d had up to this point and ironically had to chase for a response! In the managers own words ‘you can complain if you like, but I’m a director so I’ll make sure I’m dealing with it’. Absolutely no acknowledgment of any poor customer service we had received and as a result the now higher cost of our trip through no fault of our own. Have never experienced customer service and lack of professionalism quite like it.

When booking the holiday thing couldn't have been better. It is when you need to get your money back from them when things go wrong with your holiday, is the problem. They promise to pay the money back but never do £2057.00. My advise is pay for your holiday by credit card and your bank will go after them to get the money, that is what I did. Will never use them again.

Ramsay travel Dundee....AVOID!!

Ramsay travel Dundee.....phoned them to enquire about a non package holiday and had also been looking at a Tui package for Easter so, gave them a chance to quote. I always go direct but thought I'd give them a chance as they are an independent. They quoted me slightly higher than Tui direct (even though their Facebook page boasts of almost always smashing the 'big boys' and offer customer service 2nd to none) When I mentioned the Tui price, Hamish matched it. I thought fair enough, I've got a travel agent to deal with everything so surely will take some of the usual organising away. How wrong I was! Before departure, I phoned to ask if I had prebooked seats or if they'd asked Tui for passenger assist as my young daughter is Type 1 diabetic. Has she got autism was the agents question to me. No, she's type 1 diabetic I told you. Oh, well it's normally only folk with autism that need passenger assist he replied! I went on my holiday with my 2 children and, on check in at antalya airport, was hit with a 30 EURO charge because I didn't check in online apparently. I'd booked through this travel agent who made no reference to check in online and,on heading out at Newcastle, this wasn't mentioned either. Although a Tui holiday, the flight was with Corendon, a Turkish equivalent of easyjet. Was not impressed with any of Ramsays 'customer service' or the additional charges and ludicrous sweeping disability comment. Back to booking direct for me from now on...absolutely no benefit to using this travel agent whatsoever!

Ramsays of Aberdeen

Visited a couple Sundays ago. Good holiday options at okay prices but got cheaper online myself. Shop and staff are not professional looking. Very tired shop and staff all wearing casual clothes like leggings jumpers and joggers not what you want to see in my opinion.

Great Service and Competitive Prices

Due to a sudden and unexpected illness we had to cancel our 12 night European Explorer at short notice. We discussed the options with Ewan who was professional and efficient in helping us rebook the same holiday for later in the year. We have used Ramsays World Travel on a couple of occasions and their service is always first class and their prices are competitive.

Andrew Malcolm-1st class

Andrew Malcolm absolutely knew his job. He was very knowledgeable and listened to what we were wanting/not wanting. He spent a lot of time getting us the best deal - trying different routes/times/etc. We were heading to Trailfinders and only went in to Ramsay Travel to get a quote. However, my partner and I took to Andrew straight away and decided, without even communicating, that we wanted to give him our business. Thank you Andrew! We’ve already recommended you to others.

Mother-daughter duo … Eugenie and Isabel on the road in Race Across the World series four (BBC One)

Race Across the World series four review – TV that makes you feel that there is hope

It’s back! The BBC’s smartphone-free travel sends contestants racing from Japan to Indonesia, and it’s as full of human kindness and intimate relationship portraits as ever

R ace Across the World might be one of television’s most wholesome shows. Now into its fourth series proper, after a Covid-delayed celebrity spin-off last year, it follows paired teams as they attempt to travel thousands of miles without some of the comfortable trappings of modern life. Contestants hand over their smartphones and bank cards and are given the cash equivalent of the cost of a one-way flight to their final destination. They must get to the end through a series of checkpoints using public transport and ingenuity, taking on odd jobs to earn extra funds, and, crucially, relying on the kindness of strangers along the way.

Since it made its debut in 2019, the series has grown in popularity, and by 2023, moved from its original BBC Two home to BBC One, much like Bake Off and Peaky Blinders before it. During the pandemic, it offered much-needed escapism. It even got a celebrity version, as all successful TV competitions must. Better still, the celebrity version wasn’t a substandard cash-in. Watching an All Saint and a member of McFly carting their mums from Marrakech to the Arctic Circle on a series of exhausting overnight rail journeys might not sound like gripping TV, but the show was remarkable. Its challenge highlights the kindness of strangers and plumbs the psychology of some of our closest relationships.

Brydie and Sharon in Race Across the World.

Series four offers more of the same, with a few subtle differences. The competitors seem a little younger, and Japan’s bullet trains are forbidden. Otherwise, it is business as usual, and this suits it very well.

Over the course of eight episodes, the five teams must travel from the island of Hokkaido, in the north of Japan, to the Indonesian island of Lombok, a journey of roughly 9,300 miles (15,000km), across seven countries, over 50 days. Last series, the pairs travelled across Canada, where most people they encountered spoke English. But this journey entails linguistic barriers, and a need to navigate what may be, for some, brand new cultural norms.

Episode one introduces us to the teams and sets them off on a voyage through Japan. At the start, they are usually jittery and error-prone. One of the teams, best friends Alfie and Owen, are the show’s youngest participants to date. They are baby-faced 20-year-olds who are the most overtly competitive and they have, perhaps, the most to learn – about the world and about themselves.

Pacesetters … Alfie and Owen in Race Across the World.

“We have got to budget our bums off,” insists Alfie, sweetly, before either he or Owen – they’re not going to argue about it, although they clearly will – misplaces the all-important map.

At the other end of the age spectrum are Stephen and Viv, an older married couple who have both recently suffered health problems, and whose approach is more laid back. As Alfie and Owen frantically yoyo between Tokyo and other destinations, Stephen and Viv enjoy a bath in hot springs. Betty and James are siblings, aged 25 and 21, who have polar-opposite approaches to travel: Betty likes to take in other cultures; James prefers an Ayia Napa trip with the lads. And there are two mother-daughter teams, Eugenie and Isabel, and Brydie and Sharon.

Travelling in this manner is high-pressured and alien, even for contestants with globetrotting experience, and Race Across the World shows just how illuminating and revelatory it can be to take people out of a familiar environment and task them with making their way in a wholly new one. Isabel turns out to be a language savant, picking up Japanese at a rate that impresses her stunned mother. Brydie, who has severe dyslexia, says that she is so used to asking people for help that she has no problem doing so on this adventure. And even for people who know each other very well, the challenge creates supercharged intimacy.

after newsletter promotion

Race Across the World is a travelogue, a history lesson, an exploration of psychology, and a thrilling competition (the programme-makers are very good at making it all seem impossibly close in the edit, even when teams are hours apart). But I love that it is also humanitarian, when all can seem so very bleak, and suggests there is still hope in the world, if we open our horizons.

Race Across the World review: Return of BBC smash proves travel is best without a smartphone

I have to admit that I find travel so exhausting that I’m at a loss as to why anyone would willingly watch an episode of Race Across the World , let alone have the stamina to keep up with the whole nine hours of viewing that lies before us.

Having tagged along vicariously for the first leg of their journey, north to south across most of Japan, Race is best understood as being like tourism but in a more intense, condensed, concentrated and indeed exhausting form. The five pairs of contestants, ranging from annoying siblings barely in their twenties to a reassuringly mellow couple in their sixties, are tasked with travelling from snowy Sapporo in northern Japan down to the paradise island of Lombok in Indonesia, via various waypoints in Korea, Cambodia and Malaysia – some 15,000 kilometres in total.

Just like any backpacking holiday, the idea is that you move as fast as possible for the least cost (the budget is fixed at £1,390, the price of two air tickets from Japan to Indonesia), and in order to make the best of the adventure try and squeeze in some sightseeing, local culture and pick up a bit of casual work along the way to pay the bills. So it is a race, in the sense that you want to get to the checkpoints and to Lombok first, and win the £20,000 prize money, but to do it within budget and with some actual pleasure along the way. It’s all about balancing these priorities, and that essential nuance gives the show its charm. The only forms of transport that are banned are planes and the ultra-fast Japanese bullet trains, which would spoil the vibe. They should probably call it “The Sort-of Race Across the World”, if accuracy is the thing.

This, therefore, isn’t a full-on scramble, like some version of Challenge Anneka or a leisurely, carefree Portillo-esque travelogue , but one where the contestants have to find a more optimal vacation balance. It was interesting that the winners on this first Japanese leg are Eugenie and Isabel, a mother and daughter who took a pretty long detour to see the isolated, tranquil and lovely offshore island of Sado, on the “wrong” coast from the point of view of sheer speed. It’s so off the beaten track, even for the Japanese, that it was once used as a place of exile for out of favour politicians and the like.

Yet they still arrived, after five days on the road and having missed a connection, two minutes before twins Alfie and Owen, who just about managed to squeeze in a glimpse of Mount Fuji along their supposedly efficient but actually overly panicky and rushed route. It seems that Isabel’s impressive attempt to get a random Japanese boy to teach her the language on a long bus ride paid off; public signage makes little concession to the foreigner, and the universally friendly citizenry speak surprisingly little English. Our contestants don’t remark on it, but Japanese society is an evidently self-sufficient affair, something visitors always find a novelty.

Stephen and Ivy, the retired couple, aren’t that bothered about coming first, and took their opportunity to tarry at a wasabi farm, pulling up roots, burning their mouths off and cadging a useful lift. Maybe it was something about the famous sauce, but Ivy unloaded how “unintentionally offensive” her husband of many years is, just as he’s asking his hosts how old they all are: “Some have learned to tolerate him, but I love him”. Touching.

What’s also striking about Race Across the World , and something sadly impractical in the “real” world away from reality TV, is how much richer the travel experience of all those involved is because they are deprived, under the rules of the show, of their smartphones. They end up exploring their relationships with their journey partners as much as the picturesque countryside and bustling cities.

The young siblings from Yorkshire, Betty and James, for example, seem to be getting to know each other for the first time on Japanese trains and in random cafes, despite having grown up together. Something similar is also true of the two sets of mum and daughter: Eugenie and Isabel, and Sharon and Brydie. Thrown together and almost forced to talk to one another rather than scrolling through social media, their personal odyssey acquires an emotional and, around the Buddhist shrines, a spiritual dimension. As noted by young James, an unimaginative traveller by his own admission, you don’t get that with a week “having it off in Ayia Napa”. A different kind of pursuit, that.

Thailand holiday next…

Booked Thailand holiday and leave next week!, but after numerous calls to the Dundee branch still no tickets arrived! Just called again and even though I'd been told they would be emailed as soon as they have them apparently they are on the supervisors desk waiting to be checked before they post them!!! Stressful enough going in holiday without having to worry about this, would be good to have the flight numbers so I could book seats on the planes.

So had rome booked for months

So had rome booked for months, due to go in December 23, Ryanair changed the return flight to a day later which wasn't feasible as I had work commitments. I've had to fight Ramsay World Travel Dundee for my money back, this was fully refundable but they insisted they couldn't pay it back as they had paid Ryanair and had to wait for the funds coming back. Nonsense that is, then cause I wasn't willing to accept that they paid in £441 of what was paid. But stated I'll need to apply to Ryanair to get the remaining balance of £277. Terrible company to deal with and I'll never use them again.

We’ve already recommended you to others.

it was good experience booking with Ramsay travel.

I have used Ramsay World Travel several times and have always been impressed with their service and the deals that they can find. They have been great during the COVID10 pandemic, keeping me up to date with what was going to happen to my holidays. I will continue to use them and don't think you could find a better travel agent!

We visited the Aberdeen shop Aug 4th to book a city break holiday for next April and spoke to Nick about arranging a 5 night stay in Budapest,As usual like the rest of your staff he was informative, courteous and knowledgeable about what he was conveying to us and as this was for special birthdays he said he would let the hotel know about them ,we would have no hesitation in recommending this shop Mr C Lornie

Poor customer service

Absolutely annoyed at the way I’ve been treated, wouldn’t be using this company again as it seems they don’t have full customer service for your requirements Interested in only money and keeping yours wouldn’t be recommending them to anyone in near future that’s fir sure

Have used Ramsays for years, Second to none,

Have used Ramsay world travel for years now and always found the in-store experience to be second to none, the only hiccup I've ever had was during the recent trying times when applying for a holiday refund. The process didn't go as smoothly as it should have and it took a bit longer than planned on both sides to get the refund sorted out but I did get the full amount due to me so all's well that ends well .

We had a holiday booked to the US

We had a holiday booked to the US. only the deposit was paid and they allowed us to reschedule our trip to another destination. They were so quick in dealing with this via email and we had it sorted super quick. I had another holiday booked with jet 2 and well let's just say I spent 3 hours on a phone trying to cancel this, cant fault ramsay for their effenciency on dealing with this for us

I recommend Ramsay Travel

I have used Ramsay Travel in Dunfermline for many years to book my holidays. I find them very helpful especially when choosing a hotel. If I have ever had a problem they get it sorted e.g. needing to book new flights to New York as original flights were cancelled. They are great at recommending holiday locations I booked Berlin this year as they gave me the idea! They have lots of experience and prices are similar to online.

Cowboy Company

Refused outright to a refund in March after cancelling my holiday stating they were waiting on the Government changing regulations so they wouldn't need to refund,it would only be credit notes. However after involving my MP and Trading Standards they said they would refund half and credit note the other half. Obviously I wasn't willing to accept this but they then refused to have any other communication with me. Needless to say the refund never materialised. Colin Ramsays very unprofessional way of doing business would be funny if it wasn't quite so serious. His email replies to myself and my MP were "refer to previous email" So I just did a chargeback with my credit card and received it. If you look at the good reviews on here they are all from people who have done as Ramsay Travel wanted them to do and rebook the holiday and not take the refund which you are legally entitled to. I had every intention of rebooking my holiday with them but the first abusive phone call I received from David Terry from head office because I dared ask about a refund was enough to ensure I would never deal with them again. I am so pleased I haven't rebooked and got the charge back as rebooking would no doubt result in another round of cancelled holidays with the way travel restrictions are going and my trip to New York that would of been booked for Spring 2021 is looking like it wouldn't of been going ahead anyway. So BEWARE of these amateur cowboy companies do a bit of research before you book on how travel agents and airlines looked after their customers through this and support the good ones. Had I of booked direct with British Airways I would of been refunded within days.
