2023 BMW Championship leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick tied for lead as Rory McIlroy lurks

The race to the fedex cup trophy is heating up as just one round remains in the penultimate event of the postseason.

The final round of the 2023 BMW Championship at Olympia Fields will have the feel of a major championship with 2022 U.S. Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick and 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler leading the way at 11 under. The Englishman went around the North Course in impressive fashion Saturday, signing for a 4-under 66 only to be outdone by the world No. 1.

For Fitzpatrick, it has been a strange 2023 campaign, and this renaissance could not have come at a better time. Dealing with injuries throughout the early spring, the 28-year-old began to approach 100% and capped his return to full health with a playoff victory over Jordan Spieth at the RBC Heritage.

Yet, just as it seemed he was back to his normal self, Fitzpatrick's quality was few and far between as he dropped to 40th in the FedEx Cup standings entering this week. The two-time PGA Tour winner is now projected to move to fifth should he convert this 54-hole lead, but it will be hard earned as Scheffler — one of two runners-up at the 2022 U.S. Open — will give his European counterpart everything he can handle.

Finding some form with the putter in his third round, Scheffler finally holed putts with conviction to complement yet another stellar tee-to-green performance. He looks for his first victory since the Players Championship and his third of the season for what can only be described as overdue, but he also eyes the top spot at the Tour Championship where a two-stroke lead would be awarded if he maintains his projected position atop the FedEx Cup standings.

Champion Golfer of the Year Brian Harman sits one behind at 10 under after shaking his hangover at last week's postseason opener. Max Homa battled back admirably to join Harman in the penultimate group at 9 under, while Rory McIlroy continues to position himself to win alongside Viktor Hovland at 8 under.

The leaders

1. Matt Fitzpatrick, Scottie Scheffler (-11): Fitzpatrick's last top-40 finish came at the U.S. Open in June, but he looks to have found something in his game when he needed it the most. What makes his third round even more impressive was it happened despite poor ball striking. After ranking inside the top 10 on approach the first two days, Fitzpatrick ranked outside the top 20 off the tee and on approach. If Scheffler's putting returns to its season's baseline, and Fitzpatrick's ball striking remains amiss, this could turn into a battle of skillsets over the final 18.

The big stick continues to pose a problem for McIlroy as he ranks dead last in driving accuracy through three rounds. Despite not playing from the fairway, he continues to find a way to score and had it rolling early in his third round with four birdies across his first six holes. McIlroy's short game bailed him out time and time again, and will allow him to vie for PGA Tour title No. 25 on Sunday. If McIlroy is to somehow steal this tournament, he will need to start playing from the fairway as he is giving up realistic scoring chances to his counterparts.

Burns' big Saturday

When he needed it the most, Burns posted one of his best rounds of the season and one of the best rounds of the week. Tying Homa's course record from Friday, Burns carded eight birdies against 10 pars to card an 8-under 62 and catapult his name up the leaderboard. Beginning the week at No. 30 in the FedEx Cup standings, the WGC-Match Play star now has the inside track to qualify for the Tour Championship and even contend for the BMW Championship trophy on Sunday.

"I feel like it's been a frustrating year at times," said Burns. "I've seen a lot of good. I've seen some bad. Just been kind of one of those years. But I'm grateful that I'm here. It could be a year where I didn't make the Playoffs, but I'm here and have an opportunity to go out and play well tomorrow. It is what it is."

Bubble boys

Seasons will come to an end Sunday as the field gets trimmed from 50 to 30 for next week's Tour Championship. A spot in the field at East Lake will not only give players an opportunity to track down the season-long prize and compete for astronomical paydays, but it would guarantee them an invitation into the 2024 Masters.

I love the spot for McIlroy at 9-1. He hasn't had his best stuff off the tee but is still somehow only three strokes off the lead. McIlroy understands he must drive the ball better, and considering it is typically his strength, I am willing to suggest he will have his A-game with the driver Sunday. If he does, the rest of the game is in a place where he will be able to track down Fitzpatrick and Scheffler.

Final group out of whack

Chris Kirk and Max Homa are a combined 8 over and likely out of this tournament if something doesn't change fast. Homa is 3 over and only five back, but he must take advantage of the par-5 15th if he is to keep pace with Matt Fitzpatrick at 12 under and Scottie Scheffler at 11 under.

After nearly getting to the par-5 15th in two, the world No. 1 has matched Matt FItzpatrick at 11 under. The 2022 major championship winners are now one clear of the competition as they put the finishing touches on their third rounds.

That is now three birdies in a row for the world No. 1 who has reached 10 under and tied with Brian Harman after the Open winner converted a crucial par save. Scheffler is rolling the rock as good as we have seen this summer which spells trouble for the rest of the field.

GLENVIEW, Ill. – Golf fans will experience the excitement of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs in a fun-filled, fan-friendly environment when the 2023 BMW Championship returns to Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois, this week.

“We’re excited to complement a week of incredible competition with an unforgettable fan experience,” said Vince Pellegrino, Western Golf Association’s Senior Vice President of Tournaments. “With an engaging lineup of activities and fan enhancements across the grounds, guests of all ages will have a first-class experience at the BMW Championship.”

The Star-Studded Field

The top 50 players in the PGA TOUR FedExCup standings will compete in the 2023 BMW Championship to win the historic J.K. Wadley Trophy and earn one of 30 spots in the season-ending TOUR Championship. Headlining the star-studded field are Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm, winner of the 2020 BMW Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Top winners on the PGA TOUR in 2023 – Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Wyndham Clark, Rickie Fowler and Brian Harman – are also set to play, as well as past BMW Championship winners Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Keegan Bradley. Two-time defending champion Patrick Cantlay will compete to become the event’s first three-time winner since BMW became the title partner in 2007.

Spectator Experience

Fans of all ages can enjoy activations and experiences across the grounds. Access the official spectator map here to plan routes to specific holes, hospitality areas or activations.

The BMW Experience, located behind the clubhouse, will feature a driving range, merchandise for purchase and the BMW Championship Putting Challenge presented by Swag Golf for fans. A collection of BMW’s latest products, including the plug-in hybrid-electric BMW XM Sports Activity Vehicle and flagship BMW 7 Series Sedan, will be on display. The Evans Scholars Foundation Caddie Yard , located within the BMW Experience, features various ESF-inspired merchandise, created by select partners. A portion of proceeds will go to the ESF, the charitable beneficiary of the BMW Championship.
Electric Vehicle Showcase: “Destination Recharge,” located between the 10 th and 18 th holes, offers guests an up-close look at the brand’s growing lineup of fully electric models. The space also features local food trucks and access to the shaded First Tee Game Changers Pavilion Presented by KPMG. Inside the Game Changers Pavilion, fans can take simulator golf lessons taught by First Tee coaches, putt or draw on a coloring wall. Just outside the pavilion, guests can attempt to recreate Jon Rahm’s stunning 66-footer for birdie during the first playoff hole of the 2020 BMW Championship in the BMW Championship Electric Moments activation.
Specialty Food and Drink: Iconic local restaurants will give visitors an authentic taste of Chicagoland. Food trucks from Buona Beef and The Original Rainbow Cone are stationed at Destination Recharge, Aurelio’s Pizza is behind the 16 th green, and Soul & Smoke BBQ is at the 15 th hole fairway.
Gardner Heidrick Pro-Am: On Wednesday, Aug. 16, watch PGA TOUR professionals and amateurs tee off in the Gardner Heidrick Pro-Am, including sports figures like Jay Williams, CC Sabathia and Victor Cruz. The event is the biggest one-day fundraiser for the Evans Scholars Foundation, which sends youth caddies to college on full housing and tuition scholarships. All proceeds from the BMW Championship benefit the ESF; since 2007, BMW has contributed more than $45 million to help send deserving caddies to college.
The First Tee – Greater Chicago Junior Golf Clinic, featuring TOUR professional Eric Cole, will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Youth aged 16 and under are encouraged to attend the free event and will receive complimentary ice cream from Zarlengo’s Soft Serve. Golf influencer Cailyn Henderson will host the clinic, which takes place near the driving range behind the clubhouse.

Schedule and Tickets

Professional practice rounds begin at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, with gates open at 7:30 a.m. Tee times for the Gardner Heidrick Pro-Am on Wednesday, Aug. 16, begin at 8 a.m., with gates open at 7:30 a.m. Gates open at 7:30 a.m. Thursday through Sunday, with tee times beginning at 8:10 a.m. daily.

To purchase tickets, visit bmwchampionship.com/tickets . Youth 15 and under receive free grounds admission when accompanied with an adult. Active duty, retirees, active reserve and veterans of any military branch are offered a complimentary ticket on each day of the BMW Championship. Parking and Transportation

General fan parking (G-Lot) will be at Lincoln Mall (255 Lincoln Mall Dr., Matteson, Illinois). Passes must be purchased in advance . A complimentary shuttle will take fans to the course; service begins 30 minutes before gates open and runs throughout the day. Shuttle service concludes one hour after play has finished.

The rideshare pick-up and drop-off location is at Gate 1 (3033 203rd St., Olympia Fields, Illinois). Drop-offs and pick-ups are not allowed near the club’s front gate or residential areas. Spectators can also ride the Metra Electric Line (ME) to the Olympia Fields Station, located next to the Gate 1 Entrance, or park their vehicle and utilize Park and Ride Metra stations along the ME route.

Though he has two wins on the season, Rory McIlroy has been stuck just outside where he wants to be for much of the year. In his ongoing quest for a fifth major title, McIlroy finished T7 at the PGA, 2nd at the U.S. Open and T6 at the Open Championship.

And despite holding the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking briefly early in the season, he’s spent most of the year in his current position: No. 2. That happens to be the same position he held to start the FedEx Cup Playoffs, a position he maintains after another near-miss at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, where he finished T3, one shot out of the playoff between Lucas Glover and Patrick Cantlay .

But if McIlroy were to pull off a victory at this week’s BMW, he’d finally be in pole position heading into the finale at the Tour Championship.

2023 BMW Championship final results: Prize money payout, leaderboard and how much each golfer won

The 2023 BMW Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Viktor Hovland , who earns his fifth PGA Tour title with a win at Olympia Fields Country Club near Chicago, Ill.

Hovland won the tournament with an incredible back-nine 28 to shoot a course-record 61 that gave him a two-shot win over Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick on 17-under 263.

Rory McIlroy finished in solo second place on 12-under total, well out of the three-person fray that developed on the final nine holes of the tournament.

Hovland won the $3,600,000 winner's share of the $20,000,000 purse.

BMW Championship recap notes

Hovland earned 49.5 Official World Golf Ranking points with the win in the 72-hole stroke-play championship, which helps his place in the world ranking.

Hovland earned 2,000 FedEx Cup points, with the PGA Tour points offered at the playoff level for this event.

A total of 49 (of 50) players finished the tournament in the 46th event of the 2022-2023 PGA Tour season after a 36-hole cut was not made in this event.

The 2022-2023 PGA Tour schedule concludes next week with the 2023 Tour Championship .

Two PGA TOUR tournaments were honored as “Tournament of the Year” at the TOUR’s annual Tournament Meetings in La Quinta, California, on Dec. 7. The BMW Championship and WM Phoenix Open shared the top accolade as 10 additional tournaments were recognized with “Best Of” awards for the 2022-23 PGA TOUR Season.

Due to challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, this is the first season the PGA TOUR presented a full roster of tournament awards since 2018-19.

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I’d like to congratulate the BMW Championship and WM Phoenix Open on being honored as ‘Tournament of the Year,’” said PGA TOUR Chief Competitions Officer Tyler Dennis. “Through continuous improvement each year, both tournaments display excellence in delivering a premier tournament experience to fans and making a significant impact through their charitable efforts.”

The BMW Championship, staged at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois, in 2023 and won by FedExCup champion Viktor Hovland, was named “Tournament of the Year” for the fifth time (2008, 2012, 2013, 2013-14, 2022-23). Hosted by the Western Golf Association, the BMW Championship is the oldest non-major on the PGA TOUR schedule and has been the penultimate event in the FedExCup Playoffs since the inception of the FedExCup in 2007. New in 2023, the field featured the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings (previously 70), with players who qualify for the BMW Championship earning access to all Signature Events in the 2024 PGA TOUR Season. The tournament also won “Best On-Site Staging” for a record fourth time (2013, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2022-23).

With the added challenge of changing venues each year, the BMW Championship offers a best-in-class experience for players and fans, thanks to an engaged title sponsor, a championship staff and a passionate volunteer force. In 2023, the tournament featured the Driving Range Lounge, a player facility offering a premium atmosphere with made-to-order coffee, espresso and grab-and-go fare.

For fans, the BMW Championship integrates its location into the on-site spectator experience. The 2023 tournament embraced its location just outside Chicago, with the Olympia Fields Station serving as the main tournament entrance, as spectators used the train daily for easy transport between the city and course. Concessions included various food trucks offering fare like pizza, hot dogs and Italian beef from notable Chicago restaurants. The Fan Driving Range on the South Course offered spectators shot-tracer technology while First Tee – Greater Chicago sponsored the family-friendly Game Changers Pavilion Presented by KPMG.

As an extension of the BMW brand, the on-site presentation is reflective of the iconic and powerful global brand. Behind the scenes, BMW aligns with the tournament’s sole beneficiary, the Evans Scholars Foundation. As the largest fundraising event of the year for the Evans Scholars Foundation, the BMW Championship has contributed more than $44.5 million to fund caddie scholarships since BMW became title sponsor in 2007 and an additional $5 million projected from the 2023 event.

The BMW Championship will be played at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado, Aug. 22-25, 2024.

The WM Phoenix Open, contested at TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona, and won by Scottie Scheffler in 2023, was named “Tournament of the Year” for the fifth time, including the last three times the award has been presented (2013-14, 2014-15, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2022-23). Known as “The People’s Open,” the WM Phoenix Open offers a one-of-a-kind atmosphere on the PGA TOUR schedule and features an energetic fanbase, incredible charitable impact and a dedicated title sponsor.

The WM Phoenix Open is committed to an elevated general admission experience, featuring VIP-like venues open to the public. Home to “the loudest hole in golf,” No. 16 is a bucket-list item and was featured prominently in season one of Netflix’s “Full Swing.” Beyond the competition, the tournament features a number of entertainment experiences. The “Concert in the Coliseum” – winner of the “Best Special Event” award – is a sold-out concert held at No. 16 on the Saturday prior to tournament week featuring Grammy Award-winning talent and is followed by four nights of concerts at the “Birds Nest,” located adjacent to the course.

Hosted by The Thunderbirds, the WM Phoenix Open is one of the largest philanthropic drivers in the state of Arizona. Since WM took over as title sponsor in 2010, the tournament has raised more than $124 million for Arizona charities, with a record $14.5 million generated in 2023. In addition to the year-round support the tournament provides the local community, tournament week showcases WM’s environmental impact – which earned the tournament award for “Best Title Sponsor Integration” for a record fifth time (2011, 2013, 2014-15, 2016-17, 2022-23). A zero-waste event since 2013, the WM Phoenix Open ensures all materials – including the tournament build – are recycled, composted, donated, reused or used to create energy.
