History and Culture

History and Culture

One of Southeast Asia’s most desirable destinations, Cambodia has a fascinating history and wonderfully colourful culture. You may have pigeon-holed the country as being little more than a tropical beach destination where you can visit Angkor Wat, but there are so many more things to discover. Learn about its turbulent history that is outshone by the wonderful warmth of the people and the incredible attractions that the country has to offer.

Phnom Penh

As part of French Indochina Phnom Penh was the ‘Pearl of Asia’; today it is simply the heart of Cambodia, a role that suits it perfectly. It is a city that effortlessly combines a quaint past with a future-conquering mentality, the shimmering pinnacles of its temples and palaces now sharing the skyline with modern buildings.

Angkor Wat

The Temples of Angkor are the jewel in Cambodia's crown, the incredible, jungle-enveloped relics of the once-great Khmer Empire. A symbol of Cambodia, the beauty of the temples is simply breathtaking from a distance, yet it is up close where you can appreciate the unique and intricate details that make Angkor Wat one of the world’s greatest structures.

Mekong River Cruises

Mekong River Cruises

There is no better place to catch a glimpse of authentic rural life in Southeast Asia than one of the most enchanting stretches of the Mekong. Let the scenery on the banks of the River unfold as you cruise onboard the stylish Victoria Mekong.

Cambodia is a fascinating country with an inspiring history riddled with war and political instability. Despite its tragic past, beauty and intrigue can be found everywhere, from quaint riverside towns, to the scenic mountain ranges and rugged coastline. With much of Cambodia still untouched by tourism, the best way to explore is by joining a tour. Guided tours can help you discover the culture and natural surrounds of the country, whether it’s a walking tour through the awe-inspiring Angkor Archaeological Park or trekking through the Cardamon Mountains.

Don’t miss these Cambodia attractions

  • Walking tours of Angkor Archaeological Park
  • The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek
  • Exploring Sihanoukville on a buggy tour
  • Royal Palace Phnom Penh
  • Cycling tours in Battambang

The ancient world

Undoubtedly the most iconic attraction in Cambodia is the World Heritage-listed Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap . Discover the remnants of the ancient Khmer Empire on a guided walking tour of the temples, visiting famous sites including Angkor Wat – one of the largest and most impressive religious monuments in the world.

The 10 th -Century Koh Ker is one of the country’s most inaccessible temples; however, there are a range of tours you can join to explore the surrounds, from trekking, off-road dirt bikes, or even ox cart rides. Another remote, yet must-see temple is Preah Vihear, which is situated atop a cliff in the scenic Dângrêk Mountains.

Extended tours

Some of the most popular touring options are extended trips that visit the most renowned destinations in Cambodia and incorporate all travelling styles from walking, trekking and cruising. Beginning in the seaside town of Sihanoukville, you can laze on the pristine beaches or island-hop on a sailing trip. Continue on to Battambang and cycle through the city and out to the countryside of grassy plains and emerald green rice paddy fields.

The ancient Angkor temples await in Siem Reap, alongside a lively nightlife, and you can opt to travel to Phnom Penh on a cruise down the Mekong River. On arrival you can visit the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda on a tuk-tuk trip, and then explore the esplanade and night markets by foot.

Make a difference by visiting Artisans d'Angkor

Wander around The Old Market in Siem Reap

Siem Reap is the centre of charming Cambodia. The city has a lot on offer, starting with the most stunning temples in the country and ending with an impressive creative cultural scene. Peer into the traditional ways of Cambodians through food, clothing, produce and more at The Old Market known as Psar Chas.

Take a cruise on Tonle Sap Lake

Our Cambodia tour will take you to the famed Tonle Sap – a large freshwater lake surrounded by many villages and millions of people. Here, experience an authentic floating village and visit local families living aboard many wooden houseboats. Be inspired by the slow and steady way of living from days gone by.

Visit the Silver Pagoda

Silver is not all you will find at the Silver Pagoda, a site that sparkles with gold, diamonds and gemstones. As we enter the Royal Palace Complex, you will stand in awe at the bedazzled Buddha statues that showcase the extent of devotion woven into this nation. Climb the red marble staircase and discover the extraordinary ruins of a site that was once constructed only of wood.

Our top 5 things to do in Cambodia

From natural beauty to layers and layers of history, the list of things to discover in this striking country seems infinite. Here are just some of the enchanting moments waiting when you take a Cambodia tour with Trafalgar.

Wat Phnom temple

Museum of Genocide

The dark past of Cambodia cannot be forgotten. Pay respect and gain a deeper understanding with a stop at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a must for any visitor. Wander the halls of what was once a security prison and witness the living conditions of those who were held captive by the Khmer Rouge.

Royal Palace

Best museums in Cambodia

Spirituality, survival and royalty transcribe through the museums of Cambodia. Let Trafalgar guide you into the heart of this mystical land, as we peel back the layers of its turbulent past and a culture that could not be extinguished.

Cambodia’s answer to pho, kuy teav is a noodle soup with Chinese origins, consisting of rice noodles, pork stock and toppings like pork neck, ground pork and a boiled egg. Slurp it down for breakfast for the most authentic experience.

Nom Banh Chok

Another popular breakfast dish for Cambodians is num banh chok – a mixture of rice vermicelli noodles served with fish gravy, plenty of raw vegetables and chilli peppers.Order your serve like the locals do, from a street vendor off the back of a bike.

Crispy Tarantula

Chewing on crispy tarantula spiders is a delicacy in Cambodia. Quite expensive when compared to other local dishes, it is often eaten for special events like birthdays and anniversaries. Be brave and immerse in local culture with a few frightening bites, if only for the story when you return home.

Best food in Cambodia

Let Trafalgar indulge you with the traditional tastes of Cambodian cuisine, heavily influenced by the country’s neighbours, Thailand and Vietnam. There’s no better way to connect to a local culture than through its food.

What to pack for Cambodia

People packing for a tour

Comfortable sandals or shoes

Whether you’re on a Cambodia escorted tour or passing through on your own, there is no doubt you will find yourself walking for hours each day, so comfortable walking shoes are a must have for your packing list.

Conservative clothing

If you’re not on a Cambodia tour, you may not be advised that the local Cambodians dress conservatively. In order to respect their culture, avoid revealing or extravagant items of clothing and dress modestly.

Phnom Penh is exactly what you’d expect of a capital city in Asia, alive with energy and noise at all hours. Earplugs are an essential in your Cambodia vacation pack to make sure you get a good night’s rest.

Lightweight clothing

Cambodia doesn’t get cold, with year-round temperatures ranging from warm to hot. Pack lightweight and absorbent clothing like linen or very fine cotton. It’s ideal for days of adventuring in this part of the world.

Cambodia boasts a warm and tropical climate, but a distinct wet and dry season set the calendar thanks to its proximity to the equator. Bring a raincoat if your trip coincides with the annual down pour.

Cambodia is a Kingdom. And it’s magical. Of course, Angkor Wat is a must-see UNESCO Heritage site. Bucket list ticked. But Cambodia is more than its temples. Chaotic and charismatic Phnom Penh will surprise you with its sophisticated riverside wining and dining scene, and while Siem Reap will be your base for the temple visits, you’ll have to also make time to enjoy its cosmopolitan cafes and nightlife. One day we’ll drop by Sihanoukville to discover a boardwalk lined with beachfront restaurants and shady umbrella stands. Each with views of the ocean and beach chairs where you can sip a fruity cocktail while you enjoy the refreshing ocean breeze.

Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia

Vietnam & cambodia tours from australia.

Welcome to Indochina: a land of lost empires, tropical landscapes, and vibrant people. It has a special mix of culture, luxury and cuisine that make it appealing for any traveller. Each country is a world of its own with vastly diverging histories, distinct cuisine styles and wholly different cultures. These three beautiful nations, influenced by China looming in the North, India stretching out from the West and the contemporary influences from the Western foreign powers paint a world that is both wondrously synthesized to the outside world and yet fiercely protective of its identity. The people are likewise colourful; with lineages that stretch all the way back to pre-history. You will delight in the open friendliness of the Laotians, the hospitable reservedness of the Cambodians, and the diverse welcoming nature of the Vietnamese. There are lots to uncover in this region, from the Plain of Jars in Laos to Angkor Wats in Cambodia then to Mekong delta in the south and Ha Long Bay in the north of Vietnam; it will be the great experience to visit these exciting countries….

Best time to visit: Best time to visit Indochina is from October to March.

Best of Vietnam & Cambodia

18 days | travel into the heart and soul of south east asia.

Intrepid Travel Vietnam Hoi-An group street

Take an unforgettable adventure through two of the most colourful yet contrasting cultures in South East Asia. Starting off in Vietnam, cruise through dramatic karst scenery on a boat tour of Ha Long Bay, step back into the world of the country's last emperors in Hue, soak up the old-world charm of Hoi An and be awed by the endless energy of Ho Chi Minh City. In Cambodia, discover the country's fascinating history and culture in Phnom Penh's heaving streets and in the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor. This is a journey that draws you away from the crowds and into heart and soul of this captivating region, and its equally enchanting people.

Trip overview

  • Sail through Ha Long Bay’s limestone karsts and island caves, visit a centre that turns the bay’s discarded trash into treasures and spend the night checking out the stars on an overnight cruise.
  • Travel like a local on a motorbike tour, riding pillion and taking in the historical pagodas, bridges and villages of Hue.
  • Watch the sun rising over Angkor Wat as it did over 800 years ago with your leader. Wander through the amazing ancient temples on a guided tour and with a three-day Angkor pass to cover your whole time in Siem Reap, you can explore this incredible temple complex as much and as often as you like.
  • Discover the countryside around Battambang on a bike ride around rural farms to meet with local producers, through an Intrepid partner and social enterprise that supports the local communities.
  • Experience life on water on a boat tour visiting the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake and understand the deep bond between the late and the local communities.
  • In order to see as much as possible, this trip involves some long journeys, including by overnight train where the amenities are shared and basic. For more about what this experience is like, see our blog post here:
  • intrepidtravel.com/adventures/what-to-expect-on-an-overnight-train-in-vietnam/
  • Depending on where you come from, the weather in Vietnam might be hotter and more humid than what you are used to. Please consider your suitability to the season you wish to travel in. Check out intrepidtravel.com/vietnam/weather-in-vietnam for more info.
  • There are some long travel days by both private and public transport (up to 10 hours on the road), including the days that you cross from Vietnam to Cambodia and Cambodia to Thailand. Your leader and local guides will assist with the border crossings, but plenty of patience is advised.
  • Some travellers enjoy Siem Reap so much that they decide they want to stay there longer, rather than continuing with the group to Bangkok. You are welcome to sign off the trip to enjoy more of Cambodia, however we aren’t able to reimburse any unused services or provide alternate onward travel arrangements.
  • At times your accommodation may not have continuous hot water. Most travellers don’t find this a problem however, and are often keen to cool down from the heat with a refreshing cold shower.

Xin chao! Welcome to Hanoi! Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm at the hotel and is followed by a group dinner at KOTO restaurant. This organisation is dedicated to developing the hospitality careers of disadvantaged youth. If you arrive early, there’s plenty to see and do. Consider booking the Hanoi Street Food Experience at 9 am (see urbanadventures.com/en for details). You'll get to sample delicious Vietnamese cuisine like a true local, stroll through the hidden alleyways and bustling markets and take in a spectacular view of Hoan Kiem lake from a secret café. Or maybe take it at your own pace and wander the Old Quarter to admire the city’s French-colonial architecture.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Hanoi - KOTO dinner
  • Hanoi - Women's Museum - VND30000
  • Hanoi - Museum of Ethnology - VND40000
  • Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh Complex - VND80000

Travel by private minibus to World Heritage-listed Ha Long Bay, which is dotted with sandy coves, grottoes and 1600 limestone islands formed over millennia by wind and water erosion. Board a private boat and cruise the bay, exploring Surprise Cave and perhaps even enjoying a swim from Ti Top Island Beach during the warmer months. Access to Surprise Cave is via staircases. Once inside the cave the pathways are a little uneven and slippery. To end the day, spend an evening aboard the boat beneath the night sky. What better way to get to know your fellow travellers than an old school sleepover in an unforgettable location?

  • Overnight boat (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - Overnight Boat Cruise
  • Halong Bay - Cave entry
  • Halong Bay - Kayaking Tour - VND250000

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Your wooden junk-style boat has twin-share cabins with air-conditioning and private facilities. There's also a dining room and bar to enjoy lunch, dinner and breakfast.

Kayaking and swimming is restricted to designated zones within the bay.

There are restrictions on the number of boats that are permitted to stay in the bay overnight, sometimes resulting in a shortage. To ensure all Intrepid travellers can enjoy the experience of a night on the water, occasionally you will stay on a larger boat (with approximately 12 cabins) and share your boat with another group. Or your group may be split across different vessels, in which case an Intrepid group leader will be present on each boat. The route taken and inclusions on board will remain the same.

Wake up on the waters of Ha Long Bay, and before you leave the memorable scenery behind, it’s time for one last stop. The Green Life Centre is committed to turning Halong Bay’s trash into treasure by collecting discarded items and skillfully turning them into beautiful handicrafts. Meet the team behind this important cause and learn how to transform rubbish into a useful and reusable bag. After your visit, return by bus to Hanoi. Arrive late this afternoon and enjoy free time until tonight’s train voyage. Be sure to grab a bowl of pho while you’re in town and slurp down this local specialty made from broth, noodles and meat. Maybe chill by Hoan Kiem Lake until you board an overnight train to Hue this evening.

  • Overnight sleeper train (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - The Green Life Visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours, not including your overnight train.

Shared day use hotel rooms are arranged in Hanoi if you would like to freshen up before the overnight train (one room for every six group members).

Sleeper trains typically have four or six berth compartments with bench seats that convert into sleeping bunks. A sheet, pillow and blanket are provided, although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet. Depending on the configuration of the group, you may need to share with people of different genders or passengers who aren’t part of the group. Your leader will coordinate this and give further information about the train.

Arrive in Hue this morning and transfer to the hotel. Once the imperial capital of Vietnam, Hue holds the treasures of the country’s royal past. Enjoy free time in the morning to rest or explore. If you choose the latter (and who can blame you) the bustling Dong Ba Market is a great place to sample some of the specialties that once graced the Nguyen emperors' tables like banh khoai (royal rice cake). Reunite with the group to visit the war-damaged ruins of the Imperial Citadel, a sprawling city-within-a-city which contains the remains of temples, state houses and the emperor’s palace.

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Hue - Imperial City entrance and guided visit

See Hue like a local – from the back of a motorbike! Straddle the saddle and whiz around town with a local guide, taking in historic and contemporary sights along the way. Stop at Thanh Toan to see the 18th-century covered bridge and villagers shopping at their local market. Visit the 17th-century active Buddhist monastery of Thien Mu Pagoda and see the car that belonged to Thich Quang Duc, the monk who self-immolated in 1963 in protest against the treatment of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese regime. For lunch, savour a vegetarian feast in a nunnery. Finish at the lakeside royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc before heading back to town.

  • Hue - Royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc
  • Hue - Highlights & back streets by motorbike
  • Hue - Thien Mu Pagoda
  • Hue - Motorbike Tour Lunch

The motorbike tour has been assessed for safety and is closely monitored. To participate please ensure your travel insurance covers riding pillion on a motorbike up to 125cc. If you prefer not to participate, please let your leader know and they will arrange car transportation (cost included).

This morning travel by bus through coastal rice paddies and the spectacular Hai Van Pass. After a photo stop on the way, arrive into Hoi An. Recently declared a World Heritage site, Hoi An was a major international trading port during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Today, parts of the beautifully-preserved town retain the feel of centuries past. It's also a shopping mecca, famous for its plethora of tailors. When you arrive, your leader will take you on a sightseeing walk through the Old Town to visit a handful of the city's major attractions. You’ll also be given a sightseeing pass so you can further explore select attractions at your leisure.

  • Hoi An - Old Town walking tour
  • Hoi An - Food Adventure Urban Adventure - USD44

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Today is a free day to explore Hoi An. Maybe browse the cobbled streets and art galleries or hire a bike and cycle through rice paddies out to Cua Dai Beach. Maybe browse for paintings, ceramics and colourful cloth lanterns in the town’s markets and preserved Chinese shophouses. If you’re craving a new look, you could pay a visit to one of the hundreds of tailors and get something special made. Hoi An is also known for its delicious regional food, so be sure to enjoy a meal at a riverside restaurant or perhaps partake in a cooking class.

  • Hoi An - Private Hoi An: My Son Discovery - USD77

Today take a short, early morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City has a fascinating history and is arguably Vietnam’s capital of commerce and culture. After landing, take a sightseeing tour around the city by bus. Pass the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Opera House, then stop in at the War Remnants Museum to discover some of the sobering stories of the 20-year-long Vietnam/American War.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum
  • Ho Chi Minh City - City tour
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Reunification Palace - VND40000
  • Ho Chi Minh City - A O show - VND1050000
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Saigon Street Food by Night Urban Adventure - USD36

Your travel time today will be approximately 1.5 hours.

This morning head out on a day trip to explore the Mekong Delta. Board a private boat to Ben Tre to visit the coconut gardens and stop at a local home to sample tropical fruits and coconut jams. After, paddle in sampans (small rowing boats) past coconut trees along the Mekong Delta. Take a tuk-tuk tour around the villages and learn about rural life and the industry created around coconut products like brooms and coconut fibre mats. Eat lunch at a restaurant in the heart of the Delta, sampling regional specialties such as the famous elephant ear fish. Cruise the major waterways to Ben Tre boat pier, then return by bus to Ho Chi Minh City. This evening, perhaps head out to sample some local specialties as a final farewell with your fellow travellers and leader.

  • Mekong Delta - Mekong Delta Day Trip & Village Tuk-Tuk Tour
  • Mekong Delta - Lunch

Xin chao! Welcome to Vietnam. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm in Ho Chi Minh City. If you have free time before the meeting, get out and discover the city's blend of old and new, East and West at your own pace. The Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum are great sites to learn more about Vietnam's history. If you arrive a day or two early, the Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta make for excellent and insightful day trips from the city. After your meeting tonight, why not grab your group and head out for dinner.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum - VND40000

Travel by public bus across the border, through rural Vietnam and Cambodia and onto Phnom Penh. Cambodia's capital city is set on a major junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers and boasts some fine examples of French-inspired architecture. If you're looking for a tasty beverage when you arrive, head for a mojito on the rooftop or if you're in the mood for shopping, stop in at the art-deco Psar Thmei (Central Market) or travel out to Psar Tuol Tom Pong (the Russian Market) for the best range of local souvenirs.

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 hours including border crossing and lunch stop.

On the bus journey across the border, you will exit Vietnam at Moc Bai and enter Cambodia at Ba Vet. Your leader will assist you with border crossing procedures. You will also have the comfort of being on the same bus throughout the journey with less hassle at the border crossing by changing vehicles. If you’d prefer not to travel by bus today, you are welcome to book a flight instead (at your own expense).

Today, confront Cambodia's tragic past on a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21), a former school which served as a Khmer Rouge torture centre. It's estimated that more than 20,000 people were held and tortured here. You’ll also head out to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a stupa made up of some 8000 human skulls marks the execution ground for the torture victims of Tuol Sleng. Afterwards, you may wish to learn about a brighter period in Cambodian history from an optional visit to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Wat Phnom, shrouded in myth, is equally worth a visit, as is the National Museum with its excellent Khmer collection. Cyclo tours around the city are a great alternative to walking and generally include the Central Market, US Embassy, Wat Phnom, Mekong riverfront, the Independence Monument and Royal Palace.

  • Phnom Penh - The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek
  • Phnom Penh - Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21)
  • Phnom Penh - Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda - USD10
  • Phnom Penh - Wat Phnom - USD2
  • Phnom Penh - National Museum - USD10
  • Phnom Penh - Cyclo tour - USD4
  • Phnom Penh - Khmer massage - USD8

The stories and history shared at the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) are confronting and many travellers will find them upsetting. This is an important part of Cambodia’s recent history that we feel is important for travellers to know. If you would prefer not to join these activities your leader can recommend some optional alternatives. Some further information on visiting these sites can be found here: intrepidtravel.com/adventures/importance-visiting-cambodia-killing-fields

Travel by private minibus to Battambang today. Break up an otherwise long trip with a visit to the pottery visit in Kampong Chhnang, and learn about the craft of pottery making at local workshops. Then continue to Cambodia's second-largest city. Then Temple-hop with your local guide and make the most of your visit to the world-famous Angkor complex. The temples, dating back as far as the ninth century, were believed to represent the cosmic world and were set in perfect balance, symmetry and composition. The intricately carved bas-reliefs and architectural designs are mind-blowing and there are spectacular photo opportunities at any time of day. Watching a sunrise or sunset is a must. The ruins are scattered over an area of some 160 square km, but the main cluster of temples is close to Siem Reap, so there will be plenty of time to fully appreciate the great archaeological sites of Angkor Wat, Bayon and the jungle-covered Ta Prohm.

Enjoy dawn tai chi with complimentary tea and coffee and a hearty breakfast on the boat. Cruise through Ha Long Bay's serene waters and enjoy your final moments onboard, surrounded by the region's spectacular beauty. After lunch, disembark at Tuan Chau Marina to return to Hanoi for an evening at your leisure.

Take the chance to continue your exploration of this character-filled city – stroll the grounds surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake, steeped in myth and legend, or head to the National Museum of Vietnamese History, an architectural wonder. Gourmand guests can opt for an optional culinary journey through Hanoi's sizzling street food.

Optional Activity:

  • Hanoi Street Food Tour (from A$90 per person)

After breakfast, enjoy some time exploring Hanoi on your own before your transfer to the airport for your flight to Da Nang. On arrival, you’ll be picked up at Da Nang airport and transferred to your hotel in the charming coastal city of Hoi An.

Once a bustling Southeast Asian trading port, the city is still a powerful melange of cultures, influences and traditions. Marvellously preserved Japanese merchant houses and historic Vietnamese trading warehouses rub shoulders with grand Confucian temples and modern office buildings to form a colourful tapestry. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Wander Old Town's storied streets and be sure to bring an appetite – the banh mis here are considered the best in the country.

After breakfast at the hotel, the rest of the day is spent at your leisure. Every street in the peaceful port town is a gift, but the real treasure is a chance to explore Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed district that brilliantly preserves the synthesis of cultures that led the city to flourish. Other highlights include the ancient Japanese Covered Bridge, first constructed in the 16th century and surviving even the French fascination with the automobile, and the masterfully preserved merchant residence, Tan Ky House.

Three optional activities are on offer today — an evening foodie tour by scooter, half-day countryside adventure by scooter or the My Son Holy Land tour. If you choose to explore on two wheels, you'll meet with a local guide and whisked to the market or the open countryside. If you prefer to head to My Son, you will have the chance to wander through the elaborate carvings and sculptures of the Cham people to the Old Tower of the Cham.

Optional Activities:

  • Half-Day Hoi An Countryside Adventure by Electric Scooter (from A$138 per person, minimum two people)
  • My Son Holy Land Tour (from A$120 per person, minimum two people)
  • Hoi An Evening Foodie Tour by Electric Scooter (from A$150 per person, minimum two people)

After breakfast, you’ll have another full day to absorb the sights and sounds of Hoi An at your leisure. Visit the Hoi An Night Market, the perfect place to pick up a cherished souvenir to commemorate your Vietnamese escape, walk the golden sands of An Bang Beach, taking in the moored fishing boats, or catch a glorious cultural performance at the Hoi An Lune Center for the Performing Arts.

If you're feeling adventurous, two optional visits are on offer:

Set off on a full-day tour to the Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge - take in thrilling views from the cable car and the climbing train as you rise to the top of the mountain, then explore the nine gardens of Le Jardin d’Amour, the Debay Wine Cellar and the Ling Ung Pagoda and much more.

Or, get to know the local culture with a visit to a nearby fishing village, with a chance to meet the villagers and see traditional fishing practices in action.

  • Fishing Village Culture and Basket Tour (from A$107 per person, minimum two people)
  • Ba Na Hills Full-Day Tour (from A$209 per person, minimum two people)

After breakfast, enjoy a little more time to explore Hoi An before being transferred to Da Nang Airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City.

The rest of the day is spent at your leisure in Vietnam’s dazzling southern metropolis. Take the time to explore this city and you’ll be rewarded: the streets and thoroughfares run loud and fast and the hustle of the city’s markets is a haggler’s delight. Highlights could include a visit to the War Remnants Museum, the incense-smothered and delicately carved Jade Emperor Pagoda, or the colonial-era Fine Arts Museum.

  • Saigon After Dark Vespa Tour (from A$216 per person, minimum two people)
  • AO Show (from A$92 per person, minimum two people)

After breakfast at the hotel, the rest of the day is spent at your leisure. Explore the city at your own pace or on and optional half-day tour, or head out to the countryside on a half-day discovery of the Cu Chi Tunnels, to learn how they were constructed and how people survived in the harsh wartime conditions. In the evening, you may wish to experience Saigon’s nightlife from the harbor on an optional dinner cruise – see the illuminated sights of Ho Chi Minh City over dinner, while Vietnamese folk music plays.

  • Half-Day Cu Chi Tunnel Tour (from A$132 per person, minimum two people)
  • Half-Day Saigon City Tour (from A$96 per person, minimum two people)
  • Dinner Cruise on Saigon River (from A$120 per person, minimum two people)

Meet with your guide and embark on a scenic cruise through the islands of the Mekong Delta, towards the market towns of My Tho and Ben Tre. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to visit lush fruit orchards and coconut groves – stopping for a moment to see all the different ways that coconuts are used by villagers in the region – and the home of a local antique collector, Uncle Six, who will display how he climbs coconut trees using only his bare hands. Drift down Water Palm Creek, gaining a glimpse into life on the Delta, before stopping for homemade lunch prepared for you by on the locals.

Return to Ho Chi Minh City after a day well spent.

Your time in Vietnam has come to an end today, as you rise early and cross the Moc Bai Border toward Phnom Penh, your first stop in Cambodia.

The country’s cultural epicentre, riverside Phnom Penh is home to ornate temples, fascinating museums and fragrant cuisine, all waiting to be uncovered. After your arrival, the rest of the day is spent at your leisure – visit the city's legendary temples, abandoned centuries ago by the ancient Khmer kingdom or head to the Royal Palace for a glimpse into how the historic nobility once lived.

Please note that a guide may not be present on transfers on this day.

  • Killing Fields tour (from A$177 per person – solo OR from A$109 per person – minimum two people)

After breakfast, you’ll have another full day to catch the sights and sounds of Phnom Penh at your leisure.

You may choose to discover Cambodia's tragic past with an optional Killing Fields tour. Begin at Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, used as a prison in the days of the Khmer Rouge regime, before travelling to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. This poignant memorial sits on the site where over a million people are thought to have been executed during the Khmer Rouge rule. After an authentic lunch at a local restaurant (at your own expense), set off to discover Phnom Penh from a different angle with a cruise of the Mekong River, admiring the city’s architecture rising from the banks as daily life unfolds.

Today, soak up the scenery as you journey north to Siem Reap, gateway to the greatness of Angkor Wat. This exciting city juxtaposes ancient history with contemporary culture, from chic hotels to top-notch dining. On arrival, soak it all in after checking into your hotel in preparation for a full day of exploration tomorrow.

Siem Reap’s famous temple complex awaits you today – a bucket-list attraction for travellers across the world.

Begin with the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Angkor Wat. Rising majestically from the jungle, this 12th-century Buddhist temple complex spans 400 acres and is rich in archaeological treasures. Unofficially acknowledged as one of the wonders of the world, this incredibly well-preserved site is an architectural triumph.

Continue to Angkor Thom, the last city of the Khmer Empire, whose 12th-century temples and statues are a fascinating remnant of the Cambodian Middle Ages. Explore Bayon Temple, with its collection of smiling stone faces, and explore the hauntingly beautiful remains of Ta Prohm, a 12th-century Buddhist temple reclaimed by nature, with winding vines weaving around its crumbling walls.

To finish the day, climb to the upper terraces of one of the ancient buildings to view the spectacular sunset.

Your Vietnam and Cambodia experience has come to an end. After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight home.

The ceo was very well organised and efficient making the tour run smoothly despite the very intense itinerary. Majority of the group getting stomach bug/ food poisoning was very unfortunate, but not the CEO’s fault, however avoiding that would’ve made the experience even better.

Glimpse Of Indochina In 16 Days (Vietnam,Cambodia,Thailand,Laos)

My first trip to Asia and I would definitely be back hopefully soon. If there was any issue it was handled immediately and suggestions for other things to do and see were provided to me along the way. Additionally, being there during the rainy season was perfect. I mostly had excursions to myself so the one on one time with the locals was the best. From cooking Vietnamese lunch to sipping homemade adult liquids, all the way to having personal conversations with each and every tour guide. They all made me feel special and provided me with the insight to each country visited. Thank you ever so much for the hospitality and life long memories.

Cambodia Adventure Tour

Cambodia Adventure

Our group was lucky to get Chhehai. His love for his country, his knowledge and personality made this trip an Asian highlight. The trip had outstanding highlights including Angkor Wat but also time in the countryside and along the water which made us feel we were seeing and meeting the real people of Khmer (Cambodia). Some of the accommodations were very basic but this was an Intrepid basic tour so it was expected. Highly recommend Intrepid if you want to see the real Cambodia, meet local people and fall in love with this amazing country.

Splendid of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand 18 Days Tour

Splendid of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand 18 Days

Parts of the tour were a 5 and parts were a 3. I thought that I was signing up for an 18 day tour in a group of 15, but that was not the case at all. This left me feeling like the entire program was misrepresented. In reality, I was shuffled from group to group on each excursion and many times toured alone. As a solo traveler, this experience was very isolating. Transportation from place to place was a mixed bag. Sometimes it was quick and reliable, and sometimes I waited for extended time periods. For the most part the cars were neat and tidy. The drivers were competent. Connecting flights were pretty good. I personally would prefer either very early or very late flights. I felt as though a fair amount of time was wasted sitting at the airport. Accommodations were good for middle of the road choices. Breakfasts were very good. The best part of the program was definitely the guides! Every single one of them were personable and knowledgeable. For me, I would have enjoyed having at least a couple of scheduled outings in Phuket. Overall, the package itself was good. However, for a solo traveler it was quite isolating and lonely to spend days at a time and most meals alone. Additionally, I ended up spending at least another $500 purchasing excursions to fill my empty time. While I would recommend this company to someone who was traveling with a partner, I would never recommend it to a solo traveler.

Discover Indochina: 10-Day Private Expedition (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand) Tour

Discover Indochina: 10-Day Private Expedition (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand)

We opted for the "Off The Beaten Track" tour to delve into a unique experience of Vietnam, and we're pleased to report that the journey was truly outstanding. Long Pham from Vietnam Tour Fun provided exceptional support, checking in with us daily to ensure everything was going smoothly. We felt thoroughly supported and well looked after throughout the trip. Here are the highlights we truly cherished: The "Off The Beaten Path" trekking in Mai Chau, Pu Luong, Sapa, and the areas around Hoi An was simply unforgettable. We relished the tranquility of village life, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The guides in these regions each brought a distinct perspective, their backgrounds and deep knowledge of the areas making our experience truly enriching. Accommodations varied from good to exceptional, with some offering incredible views. Similarly, the food ranged from good to outstanding, with some meals truly memorable. As for aspects we would tweak: Halong Bay, despite its iconic status, felt a bit too much "on the beaten path" for our liking. The long journey from Hanoi, the logistics of embarking and disembarking the cruise ship, the tightly scheduled activities on board, and the limited cruising time left us feeling it wasn't quite worth it. We would have preferred to spend more time either in Pu Luong or Sapa. The journey to Bac Ha Sunday Market also proved to be a long day of driving. We set off early from Sapa and didn't return to our Hanoi hotel until after 9 pm. Given the chance, we would skip the market and opt for an extra day of trekking in Sapa instead. Additionally, we'd have skipped the southern destinations and instead extended our stay in Hoi An, possibly adding Hue and Da Nang to the itinerary. Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong River cruise, while bustling and lively, didn't quite align with our desire for an "Off The Beaten Track" experience. In conclusion, our journey was excellent, and with a few adjustments to the itinerary, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

What people love about Thailand, Cambodia And Vietnam Tours

This was my first time ever travelling without family and it was amazing! One of the best months of my life. Our CEO Tong was brilliant and full of knowledge about where we were going and what we would be doing.
