Undoubtedly, Bordeaux offers some of the world’s finest wine tours and tastings, owing to its renowned status as one of the premier wine regions globally. This UNESCO-listed medieval town is celebrated for its rich winemaking tradition. #Winetravelers will not only explore renowned wineries and delve into the depths of underground cellars, but also embark on a guided tour of the historic town itself, steeping in its beauty and heritage. Private wine tastings organized by local tour operators can be an excellent option to consider. We highly recommend this private and customizable wine tour offered by Bordeaux Classic Cars . Many renowned estates in Bordeaux offer these personalized experiences that not only offer an exclusive and in-depth look into their wine-making process but also allow you to taste their finest wines in a serene, private setting. For truly secluded and unique wine experiences, consider booking visits to smaller, family-run estates, often found in lesser-known sub-regions of Bordeaux such as Fronsac, Cadillac, Sauternes, Saint-Croix-du-Mont and Canon-Fronsac. These smaller vineyards may not have the fame of the Grand Cru estates, but they offer high-quality wines and an opportunity to learn about winemaking from passionate, dedicated vignerons in a quiet and personal setting. Exploring Bordeaux’s satellite appellations such as Côtes de Bordeaux or Entre-Deux-Mers can also be a good strategy to avoid the crowds. These areas are lesser-known to the general tourist population but are highly respected by wine enthusiasts, and a visit to these regions can provide excellent, crowd-free tastings.

15 Best Bordeaux Tours

Though the port city of Bordeaux has slightly more than 250,000 residents, when combined with the surrounding suburbs, that number approaches nearly 800,000.

That makes it one of France’s largest metropolitan areas – and it’s one of the country’s most celebrated agricultural, historical, and wine-producing areas.

Its southern location means relatively mild year-round weather. In addition to its cultural, art, food, and wine attractions, it’s also renowned for natural beauty.

Comprised of rivers, marshlands, a thriving urban center, and hundreds of thousands of acres of grapes under cultivation, it’s truly a unique place.

Below are 15 of the best tours of Bordeaux.

1. 3 ½ Hour Old Town and Market Food Tour

Bordeaux Old Town

Like most of France’s tourist destinations, Bordeaux is a wonder for the senses, and that’s especially true for those with seasoned taste buds.

The city’s historic Old Town area features a bustling market that’s the region’s culinary centerpiece.

This walking tour includes the services of a local guide, who’ll explain the city’s history and culture—especially how it relates to both food and wine.

Guests will meet locals, sample products like chocolate, cheese, and cured meat, and learn about what makes Bordeaux so unique.

Hotel pickup and drop-off aren’t included, but tours meet and start at a central location that’s easily reachable.

2. Sightseeing by Sidecar

Sightseeing by Side Car, Bordeaux

What could be more romantic and exhilarating than zipping around Bordeaux in the sidecar of a vintage motorcycle?

Not much, according to previous tour guests.

Along the way, guests will see many of the city’s most significant sights, like Place des Quinconces, St. Michael’s Basilica, the Grosse Cloche Bell Tower, and Grand Opera.

While en route, your guide will describe the things you’re seeing, as well as point out places you may want to explore on your own when the tour is over.

Itineraries vary depending on the season, weather, and traffic, and multiple sidecars may be booked simultaneously to accommodate groups.

3. River Cruise with Guide

Bordeaux River Cruise

River cruises are fun ways to get a unique perspective of amazing cities like Bordeaux.

Guided river cruises last 90 minutes, begin in the middle of the afternoon, and are open to visitors who use wheelchairs.

Along the way, guests will see many of the city’s most notable attractions – like the spectacular Place de la Bourse and the impressive Chaban-Delmas drawbridge – while learning about them from their guide.

Tours include aspects of art and architecture, history and culture, and, of course, food and wine.

Onboard food and drinks are available at extra cost, and both in and outdoor seating are available.

4. 3-Hour Bike Ride

Cyclists in Bordeaux

For those who’ve just spent countless hours on a cramped jetliner or in a tiny cabin on a cruise ship, bike tours are excellent ways to stretch your legs and get insight into the new area you’re visiting.

Tours depart from the city center, just a stone’s throw from the magnificent Saint-Andre Cathedral.

Participants will get all the gear they need before heading out to explore the city’s attractions.

It’ll probably be abundantly clear very quickly why Bordeaux is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and why it’s consistently ranked as one of Europe’s best destinations.

Bike tours are generally appropriate for those of most ages and levels of physical ability.

5. Guided Winery Tour & Wine Tasting in Saint Emilion

Saint Emilion - Guided Winery Tour & Wine Tasting

France is one of the world’s premier wine-producing countries, and many of its wineries have been around for centuries.

On this guided winery tour in Saint Emilion Grand Cru, visitors will go to both historical and contemporary wineries.

Guests will enjoy thorough tours of each facility, learn about how grapes are transformed into delectable and intoxicating beverages, and sample a number of products of varying colors and flavor profiles.

Participants are often particularly impressed with the traditional architecture and craftsmanship found in the older winery’s facilities, and the impressive modern technology used in the more state-of-the-art ones as well.

6. Bordeaux Metropole City Pass

Bordeaux, France

Want free entry to some of the city’s main museums?

Discounts on meals, cruises, wine tastings, and sightseeing cruises on scenic rivers?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then the Bordeaux Metropole City Pass is for you.

Depending on which option you choose, passes are valid for 48 or 72 hours, which means the flexibility to see the things that interest you at your own pace.

Since this is a guideless tour, participants will receive a guidebook full of valuable information that’ll help them make the most of their time.

Other options include transportation by bus or train, as well as the services of a live guide for those who’d like an insider’s insight.

7. Bordeaux Lunch Cruise

Bordeaux Lunch Cruise

Seeing Bordeaux from the deck of a slowly rolling tour boat is a unique experience that tends to make a big impact on first-time visitors to the area.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bordeaux is chock-full of historical, architectural, and cultural attractions that are worth checking out.

While cruising along the River Garonne, guests will learn about the things they’re seeing from the boat’s guide and narrator, and probably discover things they’ll want to check out for themselves when the tour is over.

A three-course onboard meal including appetizer, main dish, and dessert is included in the tour’s cost.

8. La Cité du Vin Skip-the-Line Entrance Ticket with Wine Tasting

La Cité du Vin, Bordeaux

Though Bordeaux itself is one of the world’s premier wine cities, it also features an attraction called La Cité du Vin that features nearly two dozen exhibits focusing on the region’s wine.

La Cité du Vin is an impressive venue both inside and out. It is a great attraction for visitors unfamiliar with the area because, in addition to its focus on wine, it encompasses bits of history, culture, and lore.

This skip-the-line and wine tasting ticket is a great value for do-it-yourselfers. Visitors generally spend about three hours on-site before heading out to explore other attractions.

Hand-held audio guides are available in eight languages.

9. Bordeaux City Discovery Game

La Bourse Square, Bordeaux

For many energetic tourists, traditional guided tours can be a bit boring.

Thankfully, there are options that let guests interact with others and their surroundings, and this City Discovery Game is one of them.

Using their cellphones, participants will use their problem-solving skills to answer riddles which will lead them from one attraction to the next.

There are 12 stops in all, each of which reveals fascinating aspects of the city’s history that might not be discovered otherwise.

Discovery game tours are great options for families with children and fun-loving visitors traveling in small groups looking for a unique experience.

10. Private Welcome to Bordeaux Walking Tour with a Local

Bordeaux Fountain

A decent hat, a bottle of water or two, and a pair of comfortable shoes are really all it takes to experience Bordeaux on this private walking tour with a local guide.

Unlike larger tours, where busses and minivans are the main modes of transportation, walking tours allow guests to see things from street-level, which translates into a more intimate and memorable experience.

Guests will meet their guide at their hotel, learn about the neighborhood in which they’re staying, then head out to take in many of Bordeaux’s most prominent attractions.

Short walking tours are great first activities for those interested in getting up to speed quickly.

11. Wine and Food Tasting at St. Emilion’s Chateau Terrace

Wine & Food Tasting Saint-Emilion

From chateaus and bistros to vineyards and cafés, there’s really no shortage of culinary hotspots for foodies to enjoy while visiting Bordeaux.

Though harried travelers often spend significant portions of their vacation time hopping from one attraction to another, ample opportunities exist for those who’d like to relax, imbibe, and enjoy the good life for a few hours.

This wine and food tasting combo tour is held at St. Emilion’s Chateau Terrace’s wine bar, which overlooks idyllic vineyards below.

Guests will enjoy three distinct wines from different regions while listening to relaxing music and dining on a variety of tasty tapas dishes.

12. Bordeaux: Full-Day Countryside Tour

Sand Dune of Pilat

The Bordeaux countryside is characterized by amazing natural beauty, large tracts of scenic vineyards, award-winning wineries, and abundant historical attractions.

If it sounds like too much to experience in one day, it’s not.

This ten-hour tour gets underway early and includes round-trip transportation and the services of a local guide.

Tour stops include the otherworldly sand dunes of Pilat, Arcachon Bay, and the Medoc wine region.

Along the way, guests will have time to stop and enjoy the splendor while learning about the things they’re seeing.

Also included are instructor-led wine tastings, a picnic-style lunch with fresh oysters, and entrance fees to two chateaus.

13. Bordeaux by Night Private Citroën 2CV Tour

Bordeaux by Night Tour in a Citroën 2CV

If you’ve never seen or ridden in a vintage Citroën 2CV, you’re in for an unforgettable experience on this Bordeaux by night tour.

Old Citroëns are generally small, cramped, and loud.

Thankfully, they’re also quintessentially French, making them perfectly unique and romantic ways to experience one of the country’s most iconic cities.

Tours are available lasting either 45 or 90 minutes. They whisk guests to significant sites like the Place des Quinconces, the Grand Theater, the Quays of the Garonne, and St. Michael’s Basilica.

At night, many of the city’s attractions are awash in spectacular light, making for a unique perspective that’s especially popular with photographers.

14. Winery and Wine Bar Tour

Winery and Wine Bar Tour

For true wine lovers, there may be no more alluring destination than Bordeaux, France.

Unlike other wine tours that tend to focus on tastings, this immersive winery and wine bar tour gives guests in-depth insights into the whole process of winemaking.

Tours last four hours, begin mid-morning and include transportation by bus, a local English speaking guide, and visits to a winery and wine bar.

Multiple samples are included, as are light snacks that pair well with wine, like fresh bread, olives, cheese, and an assortment of deli meats.

Though tours end just after 1:00, guests may stay at the wine bar longer on their own.

15. Craft Distilleries and Cognac Vineyards Private Tour

Craft Distilleries In Cognac Vineyards

The grape-growing areas in and around Bordeaux produce some of the world’s most sought after wines, but cognac is another much-loved product.

This tour includes visits to two cognac estates that are owned and operated by local families.

Guests will tour the distilling facility, learn about how aging barrels are made, why the area is so perfect for producing cognac, and sample a variety of the estates’ best vintages.

Tours are only open between Monday and Friday and include lunch and drinks in a small village restaurant before making the scenic drive back to town.

The exceptional region of Bordeaux (port-to-port cruise)

I was warned that Croisi was a “budget” cruise company, but I was pleasantly surprised by what they delivered. The cabins were well appointed with luggage storage under bed. Cabins were well attended to daily. I have dietary requirements which were met, providing delicious and appealing meals at every sitting. Coffee on board was excellent! The excursions were interesting and, even though we were a small group of 6 English speakers, we were well-catered for at all times. Well done Croisi and thank you.

« A wine tour is more than just tasting wine and visiting wine cellars »

My interest in wine is, of course, about the product itself, the flavours, the winemaking techniques, the food and wine pairing... But beyond that, what interests me is that wine is a vector, a transmission link between people. Between the people who drink it because it creates conviviality, between the people who produce it and those who taste it, and between the people of the same wine-producing region who make a living from it. Wine shapes the history of my region. I would like to invite you, to welcome you to this region, to allow you to get to know the world of wine and its people, to meet, to exchange, to enjoy tasting experiences and moments of conviviality. This is what creates memories: the quality of the human relations that one experiences during a trip. What are your most striking travel memories, the ones you tell us about? They are often the encounters...

Perfect wine tasting day in Saint Emilion A huge thank you to Pascal for making my birthday trip to Saint Emilion so special for me and my parents. The communication leading up to the visit by e-mail was excellent. During the day we were picked up in a very comfortable Tesla and given a brief overview of the local terroir, before heading to the first château (owned by the Bich family) for a fantastic visit and tasting. From there we headed to a much smaller family chateau, which was the complete highlight of the trip. Elodie was extremely informative and passionate about the family business. Pascal was then kind enough to save us from the local train strikes, which was completely unnecessary and a wonderfully kind gesture. I would recommend 100% for a fantastic wine tour in Bordeaux.

2 most pleasant days A late but unqualified thank you for the 2 days, 23-24 June, that we spent with your visits. Our driver, Pascal, was excellent; both pleasant and competent. We really enjoyed his company. The planning and execution of the trips was wonderful. We think that the 2 days with your company were among the most enjoyable of our trip. We would highly recommend you to anyone who travels in the Bordeaux area and we will definitely contact you on our next trip to Bordeaux. Thank you and greetings, with respect, Pascal was an excellent and very competent guide (with a fabulous car).

What a day ! Wonderful introduction to Bordeaux wines. We enjoyed the visit with our guide, Pascal, who is very competent, friendly and fun (said my 8 year old daughter). I highly recommend him to anyone who enjoys a private visit with young children.

Amazing day ! What a day! During a cruise with a stopover in Bordeaux, we booked this visit to see the Médoc region and we couldn't have been more pleased! Our guide - Pasqual - was waiting for us when we got off the ship. We spent the rest of the day visiting 3 separate châteaux and a lunch stop. He also made an extra stop at a local wine shop and came with us so we could have some wine. The countryside is obviously beautiful and Pasqual helped to make it even more alive with stories of the different vineyards and the history of the area. At each stop, the winery offered us a group tour and Pasqual helped us fill in the information and answer all our questions. I highly recommend this visit! It was one of the highlights of our holiday.

What a great day I used to come to Bordeaux and wine tasting was a must. Most tour operators take you to the basic Cru Bourgeois and Bordeaux Supérieur châteaux and not to the top ranked châteaux. I was preparing for the sommelier's exam and I knew that I wanted classified growths. When I booked my visit and got my itinerary, they made us book for Château Pichon Longueville Baron in Paulliac and Château Ferrand in Saint-Émilion. Our guide Pascal was very competent having worked at Château Haut Smith Lafitte and Latour-Martillac for 20 years. We booked a visit for my wife and I and Pascal took us to our wine tasting, we shared a lot of information about the region, villages, chateaux and winemaking practices. We stopped at several of the most beautiful chateaux and stopped at La Tour, Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild and Margaux for photos. We had a good lunch in Saint-Émilion. Pascal took a tour of the town and we notably met the owner/winemaker of a garage cellar/château with 4 hectares of grapes. What a great day. I highly recommend this company. The prices for many of the tours seem a bit high at first glance but the tours work 100%.

A very pleasant discovery Very nice visit. The welcome and the time spent with Pascal were very much appreciated. We'll be back with pleasure!

Thank you Pascal My wife and I had a wonderful time during our visit to the Médoc vineyards. Our guide Pascal knew the Médoc region and its different sub-regions, the châteaux we visited and the wines in general very well. As a native of Bordeaux, he knew a lot about the history of the city and was more than happy to share this information as we toured the region at the beginning of the tour. I would definitely recommend Pascal to anyone who would like to have a Gold Star experience.

The best wine tours in Bordeaux

Best wine tours in Bordeaux

If you’re looking for amazing wine tours and wine-related experiences, Bordeaux is your city! This shouldn’t come as a surprise in a region that is considered by many as the world wine capital.

If you’re confused and don’t know what are the best wine tours to take in the Bordeaux wine region , I’m here to help. After years of traveling and trying different tours, guides, and winery visits I gathered a list of the best experiences the Bordeaux region has to offer. If you’re a wine lover or just interested in visiting several wineries on your trip to Bordeaux, keep reading as there’s a lot of important information here for you.

How to take a wine tour in Bordeaux

A semi-private wine tour to saint emilion or medoc, discovering wineries by bike – biking wine tours in bordeaux , group tours in the bordeaux wine region , private wine tours from bordeaux , self-guided tours in the wineries of bordeaux , wine activity in bordeaux .

If you have no problem planning your wine trip yourself and looking for winery recommendations , you can go ahead and skip to the Self-Guided Tours section of this article.

I want to start, however, by helping those who don’t want the hassle of organizing a wine tour. And even though, I personally like self-organized tours, there are a few big advantages to taking a guide.

First, you get a lot of knowledge about the history of the Bordeaux wine region and winemaking in Bordeaux. But also, it enables you to drink a lot of wine without worrying about driving back to Bordeaux.

The best wine tours in Bordeaux

Wine tours are probably the main attraction Bordeaux has to offer. So as you can imagine, there’s no shortage of guides and tour operators offering wine tours in the region. Some of them are very professional and knowledgeable and others less so. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re booking.

best wine tours in Bordeaux

There are several types of wine tours you can find in Bordeaux.

A private wine tour with a guide who takes you straight from the doorsteps of your hotel to visit several wineries in one day. A more popular option is the semi-private wine you, where a small group is going to visit 2-4 wineries in one or two wine regions in Bordeaux .

Then you have the big group tours with 10 to 50 participants. These are less recommended in my opinion but they are very well-priced. And lastly, you have more unique experiences that include food tasting, cycling, and more.

In this article, I summarized the best wine tours and experiences in each of these categories. All the tours on my list start in Bordeaux which is great for anyone staying in a hotel in the city center .

Semi-private tours are small group tours of 6-8 people. These tours feel quite intimate even though they are not private. They’re usually not too expensive, considering the fact that it saves you transportation costs. So all in all, that’s the tour I recommend taking if you’re not into self-guided tours.

take a semi private tour in Saint Emilion

There are quite a few companies offering private and semi-private tours from Bordeaux to Saint Emilion or Medoc. Here are a few I recommend.

A Saint Emilion wine tour

One of the best travel companies to offer wine tours to Saint Emilion is Ophorus. Their tours include guided visits to some of the best wineries from different classifications of Saint Emilion. They also take you on a tour of the village of Saint Emilion where you get to visit some of the main landmarks.

The first option is a full-day trip to Saint Emilion and its wineries. If you have time, I highly recommend taking that tour so you can properly explore this world-renowned wine region, which has so much to offer. This tour includes a visit to three wineries from 1ᵉʳ, 2ᵉʳ, and 3ᵉʳ Saint Emilion wine estates (different growth classifications). You can book the full-day tour here .

If you don’t have the time for a full-day trip, there is also the half-day wine tour option with a visit to a one-classified growth winery and the village itself. The company offers daily tours in the morning and the afternoon. You can book the tour here .

Take a tour in Saint Emilion

*See recommended wineries to visit in Saint Emilion .

Medoc Full Day Wine Tour, from Bordeaux

One of the tours I highly enjoyed was the one offered by Ophorus , a reputable company in wine tourism in this region.

The full-day wine tour to Medoc includes a visit to three different wineries, all carefully chosen by their team. The tour allows you to visit wineries from different appellations in Medoc and observe the differences between the more prestigious chateaux and smaller family-owned properties. All the chateaux on the tours are either Grand Cru classé or Cru Bourgeois, so good wine is guaranteed.

There are two great options for guided tours to the Medoc – A full-day tour and a half-day tour. I really enjoyed the full day, but I think that half a day is enough to get a taste of the Medoc.

visiting wineries in Medoc

Saint-Émilion Food and Wine Tour

If you want a full-day trip to Saint Emilion I recommend taking the one offered by Olala Bordeaux. Their tour lasts about six hours and includes a visit to three châteaux in Saint Emilion as well as a fun picnic. Book it here .

* See recommended wineries to visit in Medoc .

From Bordeaux: Afternoon Saint-Emilion Wine Tasting Trip

If you want to start the morning in Bordeaux and get to Saint Emilion later in the day, this tour might be perfect for you. The afternoon wine tour offered by Bordovino includes a visit to two wineries and a tasting of four Saint Emilion wines.

As you get to visit one small family estate and a big Grand Cru winery, you have the chance to compare their wines and see the differences in their wine-making techniques. You’ll finish the day with an early evening tour of the medieval town.

You can book the tour here .

Cycling from one winery to another while enjoying the landscape of Saint Emilion’s lush vineyards is a beautiful experience you don’t want to miss. There are a few companies offering biking tours in Saint Emilion. Both companies I mention here offer only electric bike tours and that’s because Saint Emilion is a very hilly wine region which makes cycling hard.

E-bike wine tours in Bordeaux

Bordeaux: St-Emilion Vineyards e-Bike Tour with Wine & Lunch

This Saint Emilion full-day bike trip is offered by Bordovino. You start the day in Bordeaux and the company takes you to Saint Emilion where you’ll get the e-bikes.

You then get a bit of time to tour the beautiful medieval town before you head on your cycling journey. The unique part of the tour starts once you get out of the center of Saint Emilion. You’ll cycle on the beautiful chateaux route, passing by famous estates like Petrus or Château Cheval Blanc.

On this tour, you get to visit two Saint Emilion wineries and taste their wines. The visit to the first château also includes a light lunch in their garden. Their bike tours are offered only during the tourist season, starting in April.

Book your bike wine tour here .

Rustic Vines – e-bike tours

This is another recommended wine e-bike tour, offered by Rustic Vines, a company that specializes in biking tours. In this small tour, you get to visit two wineries and taste delicious local specialties during your lunch. You get a short walking tour of Saint Emilion at the end of the day and even have an extra wine tasting at a wine boutique.

Like in the previous tour I described, here too you start your tour in Bordeaux and the company takes you to Saint Emilion. If you’re already in Saint Emilion you can start straight from there, and get a reduced price.  Book your tour here .

While I highly recommend taking a semi-private wine tour, their prices range from 90 to 160 euros p/p. It’s not extremely expensive for a wine tour, however, it’s not an affordable price for a lot of travelers to the Bordeaux region.

That’s where the group wine tours come in handy.

group wine tours in the Bordeaux wine region

The Bordeaux tourism office offers tours to most wine appellations around Bordeaux, including the less-known ones. You can choose between a day trip to Saint Emilion with a visit to one winery and a wine tour to areas like Medoc, Blaye, Graves, and Sauternes where you get to visit two wine properties.

These tours are guided by professional guides who are generally quite charismatic 🙂 The main advantage of taking a group tour is the price which is usually under 50 euros p/p.

If you have the Bordeaux city pass , you get another discount of 15% – you can purchase the city pass here .

The downside of these group tours is the number of people allowed on a tour which can easily get to around 40.

Here’s the schedule of the group wine tours in Bordeaux:

Monday: Saint Emilion or Fronsac  Tuesday: Medoc Wednesday: Graves and Sauternes  Thursday: Bourg and Blaye Friday: Entre Deux Mers (the white wine region of Bordeaux) Saturday: Medoc Sunday: Saint Emilion or Fronsac

Some useful information:

  • All the tours start at the Tourist office of Bordeaux at 13:30 and last for five hours.
  • During the winter the tours are offered only on weekends
  • Kids under the age of 5yo cannot join their tours

You can book your tours directly on their website .

Another option is private wine tours from Bordeaux . These tend to be quite expensive as you hire a person to accompany you the whole day. But if you find the right guide, a private tour can be an unforgettable experience.

The best guides in this region are personally familiar with many wine markers and can take you to unique places.

Here are a few of my recommendations for private guides in Bordeaux.

If you’re looking for a tour in Saint Emilion, I highly recommend Nicolle from Sip . Her tour focuses on small independent producers in Saint Emilion. She also wrote a great book about Bordeaux wine which I highly recommend.

Nicolle from SIP wine private tours in the Bordeaux wine region

As she has been working as a wine guide for more than two decades she can organize tours to Medoc, Pessac Leognan, and other parts of the Bordeaux wine region. This is her Medoc private tour , for example.

If you’re interested in discovering the Sauternes world, I highly recommend Anne from Aquitaine travel guide .

wine and food tours in Gironde

If you’re looking for kid-friendly experiences, Anne is great at that too. Drop her an email with all your questions: [email protected]

Two other great English-speaking wine tour guides in the region are Malgorzata Balaban-Delcros and Marie Hallier ,who also offers amazing tours to Cognac.

In the last few years, I wrote many articles about visiting wineries in the Bordeaux wine region . So if you want to go on a self-organized tour, you can find all the info on this site.

Here are a few wineries that I recommend for English speakers: Château de Pressac in Saint Emilion, Château Pape Clément in Pessac Leognan, and Château du Taillan in Medoc.

Discover wineries in Bordeaux on self guided tours in the Bordeaux wine region

And this is a full list of all Bordeaux wine-related articles with more winery recommendations, that will help you plan your Bordeaux self-guided wine tour:

Best wineries to visit in Saint Emilion  A guide to the Bordeaux wine region  A day trip to Saint Emilion How to visit wineries in the Bordeaux wine region without a car A weekend in the Medoc wine region  Best wineries to visit in Sauternes  Best wineries in Bordeaux to visit with kids

If you’re planning on a wine road trip with several winery visits, I highly recommend renting a car. You can find good prices for rental cars in Bordeaux here . If you’ve already decided what chateaux you’re planning to visit and you just want a driver to take you there, you can find one here .

Finally, if you’re in Bordeaux for a very short stay and have absolutely no time for a wine tour you have a few other wine-related activities in the city.

Cité du Vin – visit the world’s biggest wine museum

La Cite du Vin is a unique cultural center, dedicated to the discovery of wine. Through its interactive exhibition, it offers a journey to both French and global wine history. Read about what to expect when visiting the museum in my article about my visit to the Cité du Vin . You can avoid the lines at the entrance by booking the tickets online – here .

The ticket to the museum is quite pricy but you can enter the museum for free with the Bordeaux CityPass . To enjoy the free entrance you must enter the museum before noon.

Bordeaux Small-Group Wine Tasting class

You can also take a morning wine-tasting class with a Professional sommelier guide. This is a two-hour workshop where you’ll learn about and taste wines from different wine regions in France.

Book the class here .

Wine tours with kids

Most wine tour providers in this region do not welcome kids on the tour, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the Bordeaux wine region with your kids. All you have to do is choose a château from my article about the most kids-friendly wineries in Bordeaux .

Whether you’re a wine connoisseur, a history buff, or simply a traveler seeking a unique French experience, Bordeaux is a destination that’s worth every bit of the hype.

How Much Does it Cost to Go Wine Tasting in Bordeaux?

Many Bordeaux wine tours allow you to stroll the vineyards, perfect for some picture taking

Bordeaux wine tours range greatly in cost, but overall many of them are not very expensive.

The most expensive tours will include tastings of a variety of high-end wines as well as food and occasionally even the chance to try your hand at making wine. But, for the most part, most wine tours in France cost around $100-$160 per person for a full 8-10 hour day.

Of course, this will vary depending on what is included, if it’s a private wine tour, and so forth.

When Should I Visit Bordeaux Wineries?

It's important to bring a hat along to your wine tour in Bordeaux since it's typically quite sunny

The best time to visit Bordeaux wineries is between August and October, with September being peak season.

Mid to late August is perfect for seeing vineyards overflowing with grapes and have warm to hot weather, while September is when the grapes are at their best and harvesting season begins.

By mid-October, much of the grapes are harvested for use during the off-season, but you’ll experience far milder temperatures which is perfect for those who don’t love the summer heat.

So, if you want those iconic photos of the vineyards overflowing with grapes, then visit in late August to early September. But, if you want to avoid the summer sun and are looking to score some good deals on accommodations, then October is a great season to visit.

October is also great for foliage viewing over the vineyards in Bordeaux, so if this is something that you would like to see, then you should consider visiting in October.

Can you Do Wine Tours in Bordeaux?

It is possible to visit wineries in Bordeaux as long as you have advance reservation

Yes, you can visit the wineries in Bordeaux. Many of them offer wine tasting tours with advance notice while some allow you to simply arrive and ask for a tour.

Depending on your interests, you can opt for a specialized wine tasting of specific brands and types, a tour of the vineyards and winemaking facilities, or a combination of both.

If you are looking for a truly immersive experience, there are several Bordeaux wine tours available that will take you to some of the most famous wineries in France! No matter how you decide to do it, visiting wineries in Bordeaux is quite simple.

How Do you Get Around Bordeaux Wineries?

bordeaux tour company

The wineries in and around Bordeaux are located within a 50-mile radius of the city. The closest vineyards are located just outside the city center, while others can be found further away if you’re looking for a truly local experience.

Many tour companies offer transportation to these vineyards so you don’t have to worry about driving yourself or taking public transportation (especially helpful since public transport is limited).

With pre-arranged tours, you can also easily choose an accommodation that is central to the city center or in a nearby village to maximize your time spent tasting wines and visiting wineries without having to worry about long travel times.

How Many Days in Bordeaux is Enough?

Since most Bordeaux wine tours last at least 4-8 hours, it's good to spend at least 5 days in Bordeaux

You should plan on spending between 4-7 days in Bordeaux , however, there is no definitive answer to this question, as it will depend on your interests and how much time you have available.

If you are simply looking for a short visit to do some wine tasting at a few wineries, a couple of days should be sufficient.

However, if you want to explore the vineyards or take an immersive wine-tasting tour, you may want to stay in Bordeaux for a week or longer. Some travelers even choose to live in Bordeaux for several months or years, soaking up the local culture and delving deeper into the winemaking process and industry.

Though this often comes after their week-long visit when they discover how beautiful life in the Bordeaux wine region of France is!

Ultimately, it all depends on what you are looking for and how much time you have available. However, no matter how long you stay in Bordeaux, there are plenty of amazing wineries and gorgeous vineyards to explore!

How Do You Get to Wineries in Bordeaux France?

If you're doing multiple Bordeaux wine tours, you're going to need a car to get around

The best way to get to wineries in Bordeaux France is by car , as most of the wineries are located outside of the major cities and are not accessible via public transportation. This makes sense since vineyards need lots of open space and plenty of sunlight, and are not typically found nearby highly-trafficked areas.

If you do not have access to a vehicle during your visit, you may want to look for local tour companies that offer wine tasting tours or hire a taxi driver to take you to the wineries of your choice.

Some high-end hotels also offer free pick-up and drop-off in the nearby city or airport. making it very convenient for you to access their vineyards.

However, this isn’t the case for all wineries in Bordeaux, France and these hotels will come with a shocking price tag for most.

Another option is to rent a bicycle or e-bike and explore on your own, though this can be challenging if you want to visit several different wineries in a single day.

Bordeaux Wine Trail on Horseback

Saint-Émilion is easily the most famous wine town in Bordeaux! This lovely, medieval village is not only a UNESCO world heritage site but is also home to some of the world’s most famous vineyards and wineries.

The cobblestone streets, monolithic church, and stunning vistas make Saint-Émilion an absolute must-visit for wine enthusiasts. Not to mention, the town is brimming with wine shops where you can sip on and purchase the region’s finest Grand Cru wines.

Best Place to Stay in Bordeaux for Wine Tastings

Some Bordeaux wine tours take place in Medoc while others are in Saint Emilion

The best area to stay in Bordeaux for wine tastings is around the city center, near Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion .

This location is close to the popular wineries as well as smaller, family-run wineries such as Château de Pressac, and guests can spend their days exploring the city before heading out to visit the vineyards.

There are also plenty of restaurants, bars, and hotels in this area so you’re sure to find something to suit your needs.

The iconic Médoc region also provides a great alternative to the Bordeaux city center, with its beautiful rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. The area boasts some of the most prestigious wineries in Bordeaux, so if you’re looking for an unforgettable wine experience, this is a great place to stay!

How Do You Spend Two Days in Bordeaux?

The best time to take one of the best Bordeaux wine tours is between August and September when it is warm and sunny

If you only have two days in Bordeaux, you should spend it exploring the main city where you’ll find beautiful French souvenirs and include a full day between the Bordeaux wine museum and a guided tour discovering your favorite French wines.

Be sure to book a centrally-located accommodation so you can easily get to all the major sites and won’t spend too much time getting to the vineyards.

If you want to primarily spend your time doing wine tastings, then you should consider booking a hotel northeast of Bordeaux in Saint Emilion where you’ll be surrounded by gorgeous vineyards.

What Should I Pack for Bordeaux Wine Tours?

Here is what you should pack for your Bordeaux wine tour

If you’re heading out on one of the aforementioned wine tours of Bordeaux, then you should pack these items:

  • A day bag or backpack
  • A hat to block the sun
  • Water (between the sun and the wine, getting dehydrated is practically a guarantee)
  • Snacks (this is more for people with dietary restrictions since almost every winery you visit will have food available for purchase or included in your Bordeaux wine tasting)
  • Comfortable, stylish clothing (the people hosting these wineries typically dress business casual)
  • Close-toed shoes (heels will sink in the dirt if you’re going for a walk in the vineyards – wear pumps or wedges at a minimum if you want a little extra height)
  • Cash – while you can book your wine tasting tour online in advance, it’s a good idea to have some euros on you for gratuity and small purchases

Which Experiences are Best for Wine Tours & Tastings in Bordeaux?

Some Bordeaux wine tours are perfect for avoiding crowds

If you want to make the most of your wine tours and tastings in Bordeaux, then I recommend heading to a few different types of wineries.

First, explore one of the many sprawling vineyards that are located just outside of the city ( Château Ambe Tour Pourret is a popular favorite), where you’ll get to see firsthand how grapes are grown, harvested, and turned into some of the world’s most delicious wines.

You should also make time to visit one of the wineries in Bordeaux city center ( Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is lovely), where you’ll get a more intimate experience learning about the history and culture of wine-making in France.

And finally, be sure to check out some of the smaller, family-run wineries ( The Naked Vigneron is a hidden gem) that are hidden in the hills outside of the city, where you’ll not only get to experience some truly unique wines, but will also get a chance to meet the wine-makers themselves and learn more about their craft.

What Wine Tastings in Bordeaux are Good for Avoiding Crowds?

Many Bordeaux wine tours take place in rural villages up to 50 miles from the city center

Most Bordeaux wine tasting tours have maximum group sizes of 8-10 people, so you can usually avoid any large-scale crowds.

However, if you’re looking for something a little more intimate then why not try a private tasting? These are available at many wineries and allow you to enjoy the experience without the presence of other tourists – simply book a private tour in advance and you’ll be set for a unique and personal experience.

It’s also worth noting that some of the smaller, independent wineries tend to have fewer visitors than those in the larger estates. So don’t forget to explore these hidden gems along your travels too!

What are the Best Wine Tastings in Bordeaux?

Many Bordeaux wine tours take place at beautiful chateaux's

Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Martillac and Chateau Beauregard in Pomerol on the right bank are some of the best places for wine tours and tastings in Bordeaux.

They both offer a special wine tasting experience as well as a wonderful small group wine tour, with Château Smith Haut Lafitte even offering private meals for larger groups prepared by their award-winning chefs.

If you’re looking to take a full day wine tour equipped with several wine tastings while looking out over stunning vineyards in one of the most famous wine regions in the world, then these two wine estates are sure to impress.

Bordeaux Tours & Travel Guide

Bordeaux Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Where is bordeaux.

The port city is located in the Southwestern region of France . Including its satellite towns and suburbs, Bordeaux is the center of Bordeaux Metropole. This metropolitan area is the sixth-largest of France and is the wine capital of the world. Bordeaux has a major influence on the world's wine industry though no wine production-related activities are done within the city limits. The region brings in about 14.5 billion euros annually through its wine industry.

Bordeaux wine tours

Various wine tours are conducted through the main city of Bordeaux France to the surrounding wine growing and producing regions. These day trips take you through the beautiful world of vineyards and various chateaus where you get the chance to explore and taste the various unique kinds of local wines.

Every now and then in your everyday life, you come across wines produced in this region, but in these Bordeaux wine tours, you have the chance to get to know about the details of the process and taste the wines from their origin.

Proper wine tasting etiquette in France

While going for Bordeaux wine tours, there are certain things that you should keep in mind to follow the proper etiquettes and to enjoy your experience at the fullest.

  • First of all, dress properly. You might be going to spend a lot of time walking so your shoes must be comfortable enough to help you with that. Wear a cute and casual outfit, e.g. Jeans with some light summer top. As there is going to be a lot of wine tasting and spitting, so avoid wearing white.
  • Get to know about the wine terminologies that will help you in your tour. Take notes of everything in your own language because after some time you will start forgetting and mixing up the information. Take a pen and notepad with you in case you are not provided with one.
  • Ask questions. That will make your tour more fun and informative. Never consider any question to be lame or useless. Your hosts have all the information about their wines so they will be happy to guide you in all aspects.
  • Then comes the tasting technique. Never hold your glass by the bowl but the stem. Otherwise, you will warm up the drink with your hand's temperature. Now sniff the wine, swirl, sniff again and then taste. Keep it in your mouth for a while, spreading evenly to give you the accurate taste and aroma.
  • Spit or swallow the wine. It is better to spit after tasting because if you start swallowing all of them you will get drunk in no time and will lose all the fun.
  • Never come empty stomach for tasting. Crackers, water, and other items might be presented to you during your trip. They are not to be eaten as lunch substitute but are given so that you could clear your palate with a sip of water or a little bit of the cracker.
  • Don’t carry a huge tote or heavy bag or jewelry as you might end up buying a few or more bottles of classy wines. So, you will have to carry them all the way back.

Other popular wine regions in France

Bordeaux France is a big name when it comes to wine. The area offers some of the finest quality wines not from France but from all over the world. The Boudreaux wine tours give you insight into this precious destination.

But it will be unfair if you consider it to be the only place in France that produces excellent quality wines. Other regions in the country are also worth trying and have one of their kinds of local wines. Let’s have a look at these places and what special they have to offer.

1. Champagne

The only region of the world to produce sparkling white wines of its name, Champagne, follows strict traditional rules to prepare the treat. That is why it is the only region in the world to produce this celebration of wine. The chalky soil and dual unique climate of the region with a combination of ocean and continental touch, influence the production and gives it a unique taste.

Traditional techniques are used to make this delicious treat from Chardonnay grapes, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. The region consists of various wine trails like Reims and region, Marne valley, coteaux vitryats, etc. but the best among all it the Venue de Champagne of Epernay, as it is home to some of the most famous houses of the region like Dom Perignon.

2. Burgundy

Also known as Bourgogne, this southeast region of Paris produce only three percent of the France wines but the quality and taste are what you will not find anywhere else. Comprising of limestone, clay and stone soil, this terroir produces some of the finest and most expensive wines in the country.

The centuries-old traditional process of winemaking is used to utilize the widespread Pinot Noir to make red wines while Chardonnay to make white wines. The region has about 400 different soil types so special care is given to the selection of soil type to grow the grapes. Make sure to pay a visit to the region's capital, Beaune that houses various unique and old wine houses.

3. The Loire Valley

The beautiful valley is famous for being one of the most stunning regions of France with its amazing castles, but that is not the only special thing about this place. The premium quality of Cabernet Franc, Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc is utilized to prepare some of the finest white wines. The history of winemaking in Loire Valley dates back to the 1st century BC.

Spread from Nante to Sancerre, this 600 miles long valley is France’s longest wine route. There are more than 1,000 vineyards that are open for the public and all of them are worth visiting, but you can't go to all of them. Domaine du Closel, Vignobles Mourat, and Domaine des Gauletteries are few top listed ones.

Located in the north-east of France, this charming town with its stunning landscapes spreads along the Rhine River. As it borders with Germany, hence, the wine culture of this region has a greater influence on German tradition.

Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Sylvaner are the most popular ones. The Alsace wines are fully fermented and thus differ from the German versions in having a drier texture and more rich and fruity flavor. The small region produces only 150 million wine bottles annually. Apart from the white dry and sweet wines, Alsace is also known for producing some rose and red wines as well.

5. Provence

Located in the southeast region, near the Mediterranean Sea, this place is the warmest wine region in France. This oldest winemaking region of the country is producing fine quality wines for around 2600 years.

The most famous is the rose wines made with Mourvedre grapes. This type is blended with Cinsault and Grenache grapes to give the awesome flavor. Make sure to include Château Pradeaux and Château de Roquefort on your list to try. Some vineyards also produce red, grey and white wines. Bandol is the area's most popular white wine that has been celebrated for its taste since ages.

Top activities in Bordeaux (other than wine tasting)

Though famous for its unique and delicious wines, Bordeaux France does have many other activities for the visitors other than Bordeaux wine tours and vineyards.

1. Explore the Bordeaux Museums

The city has more than 20 museums and each has a different theme. Some of them will surely grab your attention. Apart from the famous La Cité du Vin wine museum, there are others like the Natural History Museum, Maritime Museum, the Science Museum, Contemporary Arts Museum, and many more waiting to be explored. Be sure to check the timing as some of them might be closed for specific days or times.

2. Solve the Mystery of Escape Room

Choose from the five mysteries and utilize your detective skills to solve it by following a series of hints and clues. You need to solve the mystery to get out of the room. Your escape hunt guide will be watching you from outside and helps you with additional clues if you get stuck somewhere.

3. Splash in the Miroir d’Eau

The largest reflecting pool of the world is found in Bordeaux that was designed by Michel Corajoud and Jean-Max Llcora. The design of this water mirror was inspired by the Piazza San Marco in Venice. It is one of the most favorite spots of the locals as well as tourists to relax and splash in the cold water on hot summer days. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most photographed places in Bordeaux France.

4. Relax in Jordin Public

Inaugurated in 1746, this garden was originally designed in French style at the land that was not suitable to grow high-quality grapes. The purpose was to make an open space for the residents to relax away from the bustling city.

The garden was redesigned to give an English touch around 1856 that can still be seen. Enjoy a picnic or simply read a book in the garden. There is also a carousel and playground or children, and a small and free botanical garden behind the park.

5. Rue Sainte-Catherine

Have a trip to Europe's longest pedestrian shopping street. Since 1984, the street has been closed for the traffic and is a prime shopping destination in France. The street is lined with major French chains and retailers, as well as various cafes, boutiques, and restaurants. Pay a stop to the Place Saint-Project, the center point of the sopping route, take some rest and plan your further destination.

Top attractions in Bordeaux

With half of the city designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the place is home to various significant pieces of classical and neo-classical architecture. More than 350 buildings in the region have been classified as historical monuments. The city is also known as the "Port of the Moon" because of its crescent-shaped meander on the Garonne River.

The ancient churches, 18th-century grandeur, historic museums, and vibrant neighborhoods are what make the city worth its name "The Pearl of Aquitaine". Most of the people come here for the Bordeaux wine tours but the region has much more to offer. From among the huge list of worth visiting places, here is a shortlist of the top destinations that you should not miss during your trip to Bordeaux France.

Cathédrale Saint-André de Bordeaux

Located at the heart of the city, the 12th-century cathedral has significant historical importance. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for being the place where Louis VII married a 13-years old Eleanor of Aquitaine. The building was stripped of its original decor during the French revolution, now most of the embellishments are from other buildings, except for the one wall from the original 11th-century nave.  The place contains various stone-carved facades with sculptures from the Christ in Majesty, the Ascension, and the Last Supper.

Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux

This neoclassical building is considered to be the masterpiece of the famous architect Victor Louis that was built in 1780.restored in 1991, the theater houses the Opéra National de Bordeaux that has a permanent set up of 38 dancers, 37 choral artists, and 110 orchestra musicians.

The grand foyer inside the building with magnificent blue and the golden hall will leave you awestruck with its massive crystal chandelier, stunning frescos, and bright interior.

Even if you are not interested to see an opera performance, just went in to witness the marvelous interior. Visit the Place de la Comédie at night with its stunning portico and the sight of 12 statues of goddesses and muses.

Place de la Bourse

The majestic square was built by Jacques Gabriel in the early 1700s and became the symbol of Bordeaux with its inception. The open design of this plaza ended the walled city from the medieval era.

The three sides are covered with 18th-century buildings while the fourth side in its original design was separated from the Garonne River through railings. Now there is a shallow water feature known as Miroir d’Eau that makes the boundary between the stream and the square. This large pool with shallow water film makes the place more magical, specifically when it gets veiled by the mist.

La Cité du Vin

This ultra-modern and high-tech wine museum is something you will not find anywhere else in the world. This ten hours audiovisual tour is an interactive experience that engages your senses and you can spend a whole day at this place.

T he tour makes you aware of the greatest wine regions of the world, the centuries-old traditional techniques, and procedures and sensory experience of them all. The 3000-square meter building has a 55-meter dazzling tower, at the top of which you get to taste the world class-wine before ending your tour. Apart from this permanent exhibition, the museum also holds temporary exhibitions and wine classes.

Pont de Pierre

Ordered by the famous Napoleon Bonaparte, this bridge was designed in 1817 by Claude Descamps, but completed in 1821. The most important feature is that it was the first-ever bridge designed and used to get across the Garonne River.

The 17 arches of the bridge, supported by the foundation piles, stand gracefully in the riverbed and are strong enough to withstand the strong river flow and water current. These 17 arches were originally intended to represent the 17 letters from the name of the emperor. You will notice white medallion at each span, which was also marked to honor him.

Porte de la Grosse Cloche

This 15th-century belfry with its twin conical roof was built for the Bordeaux town hall. This is one of the few original remaining fragments of the city from medieval times. The huge monument is built in the Palace of Porte Saint-Éloy, a 13th-century old gate.

The huge bell remains silent mostly throughout the year except for six times when it rings to commemorate the important events like VE day, Storming of Bastile, etc. You can have a look from below of the 7,750-ton heavy bell. The vintage clock was used to be part of the old city hall of the city.

Porte Cailhau

Located on the Garonne River banks, in the Place du Palais, this medieval gateway once serves as the main entry gate to the main city. The monument was constructed in 1945 to honor King Charles VIII's victory against the League of Venice.

Hence, it served for the city defense as well as a triumphal arch. The magnificent structure has a transitional design between renaissance and gothic architecture. There is an exhibit for the tools and materials that were used in the building of this 10 stories high gate.

Musee d'Aquitaine

The vast museum crystallizes the centuries-old history of this region of Aquitaine, with timeline charts from prehistoric times to modern-day. Started in 197, this museum gives a chance to explore the detailed French history out of Paris.

The museum is home to unique pieces of antiquity from old times, centuries-old stone carvings, cave paintings, Gallic treasure, and burials of many famous statesmen, philosophers, and authors that were important in the history of Bordeaux. If you are a fan of history, you can plan a complete day trip to spend time in this magnificent collection of arts and historic pieces.

Best time to visit Bordeaux

The beautiful vineyard region of Bordeaux France can be visited throughout the year. Every season has to offer something different for the old and young alike.

If you want to avoid huge crowds of visitors then spring is the time for you. The prices are low, the crowds are small and you can have the region all to yourself. The springtime, starting from March to June can be ideal to visit with pleasant weather, lower crowds and a huge opportunity to enjoy the region .

Avoid the start of April as that is the time for primer tasting and most of the chateau won't allow visitors for Bordeaux wine tours. By June the weather is still fine and the Bordeaux vineyards start getting the first bud burst and are filled with the powerful aroma of vine flowers. This might be the best time to visit your trip.

Most popular is the summertime, between June and August with most frequent Bordeaux wine tours. Most of the European and French crowds start arriving in Bordeaux France by late June and stay until early August. Autumn again brings peaceful calmness in the region with the tourist crowds gone back home.

The weather is still pleasant with little showers, signaling the approaching winters. Some of the wineries start harvesting in September and they won't allow any visits. By October, the weather is still fine and makes this time a good one to visit the vineyards. However, the region starts getting cooler by November, going through the end of February. Christmas time is again very popular among visitors as it shows a unique side of the region in the chilly atmosphere.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, loire valley - arrive in paris and transfer to the loire valley.

Upon your arrival in Paris, your English-speaking guide will pick you up at the airport and drive you to the Loire Valley. Enjoy a relaxing ride through the scenic countryside in your comfortable air-conditioned transfer. You’ll arrive in the village of Chambord and have lunch at your leisure. Your guide will take you to one of the charming restaurants in the village. Sample the local cuisine such as Salmon in Beurre Blanc Sauce paired with a refreshing glass of Anjou wine (a local appellation) and Chicken Fricassee with Mushrooms accompanied by Vouvray, another one of the Loire Valley’s fine wines.

After lunch, you’ll visit the Château de Chambord. This glorious castle was built in the early 1500s for King François I to impress his distinguished visitors, including royal heads of state and foreign ambassadors. The château is surrounded by expansive woodlands that are comparable in size to the entire city of Paris! Your private tour takes you inside this magnificent Renaissance château with over four hundred rooms. Soak up the grandeur of the immense interior, as the spiraling staircase alone is a breathtaking architectural statement. After your tour of the château, you’ll be treated to a wine tasting at the Domaine de la Grange, an artisan winery that produces exceptional white, red and sparkling wines.

The proprietor will welcome you to the domaine and educate you about the property’s Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny appellations. The highly regarded Cour-Cheverny wines were originally made for King François I. Returning from a trip to Italy, King François I made a detour in Burgundy where he sampled their famous wines. The King then took back native (Romorantin) grape vines from Burgundy to his château in the Loire Valley. Today you will not find any other wine made with Romorantin grapes except for the Cour-Cheverny appellation. You’ll have a chance to sample this unique wine during your visit. Following the wine-tasting tour, you’ll be provided a transfer to your luxurious hotel. For dinner, choose one of the traditional restaurants within walking distance of your hotel. Consider learning more about your France travel agents who strive to produce a highly personalized and memorable trip of a lifetime, tailored to your particular interests and desires.

What's Included:

Loire Valley - Guided Tour of Amboise and Loire River Boating Excursion

After a French continental breakfast at your hotel, your guide will pick you up for a scenic drive to Amboise. The highlight of Amboise is the magnificent Royal Château perched at the highest point of the city. Your guide will take you on a tour through the castle, showing you the most important rooms while sharing the fascinating history. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Royal Château sits on the location of an ancient castle. In the 1500s, the castle was refurbished in the Italian style for King François I and later renovated for King Henry II.

After taking in the history of this beautiful castle, you’ll visit a winery in Vouvray, one of the largest appellations of white wine in the Anjou-Saumur-Touraine region of the Loire Valley. Enjoy a guided tour of the wine cellar along with a gourmet lunch and wine tasting. The winery produces a large range of the finest quality vintage Vouvray wines. After the winery tour, your guide will take you to Chaumont sur Loire for a boating excursion on the Loire River. Hop on board a “ gabare ,” a replica of the traditional French boats from the 18th and 19th centuries. Your captain will lead the way through this rugged river surrounded by lush flora and fauna. This beautiful river is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Nature Site. After an invigorating cruise down the river, your guide will drive you back to your hotel. Tonight, enjoy a leisurely dinner in the village or at your hotel.

Wine Tasting in Chinon and Tour of Chenonceau Castle

Your guide will pick you up at your hotel after breakfast for today’s excursion. Enjoy a scenic drive through the vineyards of the Loire Valley on your way to the historic city of Chinon. Your guide will share the city’s fascinating history as you follow in the ancient footsteps of Joan of Arc. With its narrow cobblestone streets and impressive medieval buildings, Chinon takes the visitor on a journey back in time. You will see a typical quarter of the medieval town with exceptional views of the impressive Royal Fortress of Chinon in the distance. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the restaurants in Chinon’s historic center.

This afternoon, enjoy a visit to the Domaine Pierre Sourdais winery located beside the peaceful Vienne River. The winery is located in Cravant les Coteaux, a hillside village that is renowned for Chinon wines. Domaine Pierre Sourdais produces exceptional Chinon appellation wines made from Cabernet Franc grapes. Your tasting includes a wide selection of Chinon wines. You’ll have a chance to sample vintage bottles that have been aged for up to 30 years. The tour shows you the winery’s state-of-the-art equipment and traditional cellars while educating you about the region’s winemaking techniques.

After your winery visit, your guide will drive you to the breathtaking Château de Chenonceau. This exceptional Renaissance château has one of the most unusual architectural designs—it was built on a bridge over the river. Known as the Château des Dames (“Castle of Ladies”), this monumental château was built and designed for famous women including Diane de Poitiers (mistress of King Henry II) and Catherine de Medici. With its exceptional paintings and rare 16th-century tapestries, the château has an elegant, feminine style. Every room of the castle features a bouquet of flowers and most have beautiful views of the river. After your guided tour, you’ll return to your hotel for a sumptuous dinner.

Bordeaux - Travel to Bordeaux with a Stop at a Cognac Winery

After breakfast, you’ll begin the journey towards Bordeaux in Southwest France. On your way to Bordeaux, you’ll make a stop in the famous wine-growing region of Cognac. You’ll visit a domaine that produces exceptional Cognac wine in the traditional style. The proprietors will tell you about their passion for creating fine wine and their love of the terroir. Then you’ll continue driving towards Bordeaux. Upon arrival, check into your luxurious accommodation in the city center. After some time to freshen up, you can begin exploring the beautiful city of Bordeaux. Because of its historical and cultural importance, UNESCO declared the city of Bordeaux a World Heritage Site. The city has over 300 buildings designated as historical monuments. The wealth of Bordeaux comes from its heritage of renowned wines produced from the vineyards surrounding the city. Tonight you’ll savor a leisurely gourmet dinner and then stroll through the city’s elegant streets, admiring the ornate buildings that are illuminated at night.

Bordeaux - Sightseeing Tour of Bordeaux and Saint-Emilion

This morning, you’ll embark on a guided tour of Bordeaux to see the city’s most exceptional highlights. Dating back to the 12th century, the cathedral is precious enough to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage monument. You admire architectural masterpieces from the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century. The elegant Place de la Bourse that stands beside the Garonne River and Le Grand Théâtre is an inspiring neoclassical building where opera and ballet performances are held. Along the way, you’ll also discover the city’s culinary wonders. You can stop into a boulangerie (French bakery) to sample a croissant or a local specialty called “cannelé” (caramelized custard pastry). You’ll also see the small markets where locals shop for fresh ingredients.

For lunch, you may choose from one of the restaurants near your hotel. Enjoy a leisurely meal before setting off for the village of Saint-Émilion. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic city dates back to the 11th century and is steeped in the tradition of winemaking. Like many medieval French towns, Saint-Émilion is perched high on a hilltop above the rolling hills. You’ll wander the ancient streets lined with old stone buildings and relax in the charming public squares. Look out for spectacular vistas of the surrounding vineyards. After visiting Saint-Émilion, you’ll travel to a nearby wine château for a guided tour and wine tasting. This prestigious château produces renowned Saint-Émilion Premier Cru wines that are coveted at the finest restaurants all over the world. Tonight you’ll have free time for an evening stroll and gourmet dinner in Bordeaux.

Take in the scenery as you relax to the ebb and flow of the ocean waves. On your guided tour, you’ll have a chance to see “la Dune du Pilat,” an impressive sand dune. Spend some time sunbathing on the beach and walking along the trails. The tour concludes at Cap Ferret, a coveted vacation destination surrounded by pristine nature. You’ll stop in Le Canon village, a traditional oyster-harvesting village, where you can sample this local specialty accompanied by a glass of fine wine. The tour also includes a tasting of local sturgeon and Gironde River caviar. Later this afternoon and evening, you’ll have free time for sightseeing in Bordeaux and dinner at the restaurant of your choice.

If you want to visit tourist sites on foot, Rome may be your best bet, as there are tons of historical sites like the Roman Forum that are within city limits. — AFP

When it published its latest guide, Lonely Planet highlighted the trend to visit tourist sites on foot or by bike, as optimal means for slowly voyaging through unknown regions and really taking the time to discover them. Of course, some destinations are more suitable for this kind of travel than others.

Locals know that if you’re cycling in Paris, France you can usually outpace the cars. But using your legs is also a good way to get around. While this type of vacation is feasible in the City of Light, it’s less the case in other major tourist destinations around the globe such as London, England unless you concentrate solely on the must-sees around Big Ben and Westminster (but that would be a shame!).

The slower pace of travel on foot is in fact an approach gaining ground, and not only among backpackers, as spotted by the Lonely Planet guide at the end of 2023. So-called “soft” travel, or travelling “on foot or by bike”, is truly in vogue. For instance, the Portuguese Way, which links Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela, was an unprecedented success last year, according to Lonely Planet.

For a city break all on foot, Spain offers the most opportunities, according to searches and bookings made on the Guruwalk platform, which organises free pedestrian tours worldwide, spotted by The DailyMail.

It’s worth remembering that the methodology of ranking is based above all on popular walking tours.

Other popular Spanish cities for these types of visits include Seville (15th), Toledo (16th), Valencia (21st) and Granada (27th).

France is another option for visiting the sites by foot. There are seven possibilities, including Paris (11th), Bordeaux (47th), Strasbourg (51st), Toulouse (67th), Nice (81st), Marseille (82nd) and Lyon (95th).

However, it is Rome that really stands out as the most popular destination for a visit without any means of transport.

Meanwhile, the only United States city on the list is New York in the 53rd spot. – AFP Relaxnews
