Overview [ edit ]

The Broken View is an independent alternative hard rock band originating in Saratoga Springs, NY . [1] . The band was formed in 2019 and is currently composed of singer/guitarist Austin Kranick, drummer Tyler Hayes, lead guitarist John Lombardi, guitarist Matt Spinner, and bassist Joe Martino [1] . The band is best known for their single, “ Something Better ” off of their debut EP of the same name and their tribute cover of Linkin Park ’s “ Breaking the Habit ." [2]

“ Something Better ” has currently surpassed 7.5M views on YouTube and 623k streams on Spotify (April 2022), while “ Breaking the Habit ” is currently sitting at over 1M YouTube views and over 1M Spotify Streams (April 2022) [2] [3]

Early years [ edit ]

The Broken View was formed by lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Austin Kranick and drummer/songwriter/producer Tyler Hayes [1] . The pair met at The Low Beat in Albany, NY , while playing together with their former bands. They quickly bonded over their shared love of intricate songwriting and complex instrumentals while writing music for Austin’s solo project [4] . Together, Austin and Tyler began playing open-mic shows in 2018 at Trick Shots in Clifton Park, NY , performing acoustic versions of their in-progress songs as well as covers. Later that year, they began writing their EP Something Better , releasing their first single entitled, “ The Fall ” in July 2019. They soon followed with their second single, “ All I Feel is You ”, which consisted of their first music video including actors along with the band itself [2] . “ All I Feel is You ” currently sits at almost 3M views (as of April 2022) on YouTube and is one of their most-watched videos to date [2] .

The Broken View performed their first live show as a cohesive band at The Hollow in Albany, NY , in September 2019 benefitting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for childhood cancer. [1] . The band at the time consisted of Austin and Tyler, as well as guitarist Matt Spinner. This was done in promotion for their Something Better EP, released September 6th, 2019 [3]

2019-2020 [ edit ]

The Broken View released their first EP entitled, Something Better in 2019 [3] . The EP consists of 5 songs: “ All I Feel Is You ”, “ The Fall", “ Something Better ”, “ Who We Are ”, and “ What Could Be Worse ”, all of which were written by Austin Kranick and Tyler Hayes and produced by Greyscale Recordings [3] . The EP has over 1.4M streams on Spotify between each title and has amassed over 11.5M views on YouTube between the 3 songs released as music videos [3] [2] . The EP features Austin Kranick (2019-present) on vocals/guitar/bass/synth and Tyler Hayes (2019-present) on drums/vocals/synth [1] .

2020-2022 [ edit ]

After the success of Something Better , the band’s plans to begin playing shows and composing a tour were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but they quickly started to gain traction on YouTube for their artistic and honest music videos. The band took this opportunity to use social media as their main method of exposure and advertising, engaging with their fans through Facebook and Instagram [1] . With the explosion of social media use due to the stay-at-home orders and quarantine mandates around the world at this time, The Broken View began to receive international attention [1] [4] .

Their first big break came when they released their reimagined cover of Linkin Park ’s, “ Breaking the Habit ”, via the YouTube music promotion channel Spaceuntravel in honor of Chester Bennington on the 3-year anniversary of his death. [5] . The cover was an instant hit, garnering hundreds of thousands of views and likes just weeks after its release [5] . This led to an increase in viewership across all their platforms, and the band began hosting regular live streams with their fans through YouTube and Patreon , during which they would break down the meaning behind each of their songs and videos and engage in Q&A-style sessions with their viewers [2] . This led to the success of their fourth single, “ You and Me Now ”, which also debuted on Spaceuntravel ’s channel and as of April 2022 has over 290k views and 256k streams on Spotify [3] [5] . This was followed by their next single and music video, “ Start Over ”, which currently sits at over 2M views on YouTube and 180k streams on Spotify (April 2022) [3] [2] . Their last single of 2021 was entitled, “ On The Mend ”, and this track has over 420k views on YouTube and 171k streams on Spotify (April 2022) [3] [2]

In December of 2021, the band released their first full-length album titled, On The Mend , composed of 11 songs total, including previously released singles, “ You and Me Now ”, “ Start Over ”, and “ On The Mend ”. The remainder of the tracks consists of, “ Reverie ”, “ Not The One ”, “ Another White Lie ”, “ Nothing To You ”, “ Stay (feat. Clara Adelaide) ”, “ You’re Not Alone ”, “ Does It Make You Happy ”, and “ Leave Love Out Of It ”, written by Austin Kranick, with contributions from John Lombardi and Tyler Hayes, and produced by Greyscale Recordings . [3] . During the writing and recording process of the album, guitarist John Lombardi (2021-present) co-wrote and produced a number of songs with Austin and later joined as a full-time member as lead guitarist with the release of On The Mend [3] [1] . The band hosted a release party to debut the On The Mend album at The City Beer Hall in Albany, NY , on December 5th, 2021 [1] . The show featured an acoustic performance and band meet-and-greet, and tickets sold out in less than a month with fans flying in from all over the country [4] [1] . To date, the album has gained almost 900k streams on Spotify collectively across all tracks [3] . Joe Martino (2022-present) made his debut in the band as a bassist during a virtual concert in January 2022 and has since transitioned to guitar player alongside John Lombardi [1] [2]

2022-present [ edit ]

The Broken View is currently working on putting together a tour as well as other shows at venues such as Empire Live in Albany, NY [1] [4] . They also continue to host Patreon -only live streams and concerts and are working on releasing a live acoustic recording of their 2021 On The Mend album release party [1] . They are also heavily active on Facebook and Instagram and interact regularly with their fans, answering questions and showing behind-the-scenes looks at their writing/recording/producing processes.

The Broken View Interview

SUNRAY MAGAZINE has the pleasure to interview the wonderful rock band from New York “The Broken View”

SUNRAY: How Did You Meet? TBV: Austin and Tyler met during a show with their old bands from high school and after working together on a song that Austin wrote back in 2016, the chemistry was unlike anything at the time for them. Tyler called up Austin a few months later about starting a new band together called The Broken View. After the first writing session, All I Feel Is You was written and about a year later, the “Something Better – EP” was officially released. When it came time to play shows, we already knew a few musicians to fill those spots but after only three performances, the pandemic happened. We knew we had to keep busy and stay positive at all costs, so at some point, the idea of putting together a cover of Breaking The Habit was tossed around. We wanted to create something really special and unique to our sound but make sure we were doing the song justice, in honoring Chester Bennington. Linkin Park has always been among our favorite bands and we couldn’t be more grateful for the overwhelmingly positive reception we were given from all fans alike. Shortly after the cover was released, we were into the post production stage of our full length album, “On the Mend”. Which was around the same time that John joined on to play Lead Guitar and most recently, bringing on Joe Martino for Rhythm Guitar. Since the album release, we continue to gain support from our ever growing and dedicated fanbase.

SUNRAY: Why “The Broken View”? TBV: When Tyler contacted Austin about collaborating, he sent over a mock-up logo which was used for the Something Better – EP. There was some discussion about the name and after going through the meaning of “Break Views” in graphic design, it seemed to be a fitting choice. Break Views essentially let you view the object from the inside to get a better understanding of how it all works. We applied that concept to the lyrical content and the messages we do our best to convey through life experiences and emotions.

SUNRAY: Who Are Your Biggest Influences? TBV: Our influences come from a very wide variety of artists, genres and styles. From the rock side of things, bands like Blue October, The Plot In You, Goo Goo Dolls, Linkin Park, Shinedown, The Fray, Breaking Benjamin, etc.. have always been dear to our hearts. On the other hand, we all come from very musical upbringings which opened that door for us at a pretty young age. 80’s and 90’s music has always been a heavy influence on the music we create such as artists like Def Leppard, Peter Grabriel, Phil Collins, Prince, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, etc.. The list goes on and on and even spans through to pop, rap, country, and jazz. We are just music lovers who love to make music.

SUNRAY: Who Do You Sound Like? TBV: We like to think that we have our own sound and style that is unique to us. But surely there are some things about our music that’s reminiscent of our influences.

SUNRAY: What inspired you to start playing and making music? TBV: We’ve always been drawn to art and to performing since before we can remember but there were certainly defining moments for each of us that stand the test of time. For Austin, it was watching Purple Rain with his father for the very first time at the age of 5. Specifically, Prince performing The Beautiful Ones left quite the mark. Tyler recalls the moment he was on the verge of finding an alternative career path until he met Chris Turner of Oceans Ate Alaska and after a few drum lessons and a post-show conversation with the band, his passion was reinstilled and ever since then, music was it. For John, it was the moment his father showed him Flying In a Blue Dream by Joe Satriani and for Joe, it was the time a classmate brought a guitar into his 6th grade music class that he knew he needed to play guitar.

SUNRAY: What’s Your Songwriting Process? TBV: The songs are written in a few different ways but usually, they start off as demos that Austin writes and produces himself and then it’s finished up at Greyscale Recordings where Tyler will mix and master the track. There are also instances where it begins as a garage band loop, voice memo, or just some lyrics that are brought to the table, which are then composed, written and produced in a group setting.

SUNRAY: Who’s your ideal musician to collaborate with and why? TBV: There are so many amazing musicians we would love to work with. Justin Furstenfeld, Meg Myers, Matt Healy, Mike Shinoda, to name a few. However, we do have some new songs we’ve been working on that would be really cool to hear Lennon Stella sing on. We love her work.

SUNRAY: If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be? TBV: Blue October

SUNRAY: What is your favourite song to perform? TBV: We have been practicing a lot of the new songs and at the moment, “Leave Love Out of It” might be our favorite but we love playing them all.

SUNRAY: Band team members TBV: Austin Kranick: Vocals | Tyler Hayes: Drums | John Lombardi: Lead Guitar | Joe Martino: Rhythm Guitar

SUNRAY: What’s next for you? TBV: We are currently figuring out a tour and how we can make that happen for our fans. New music videos are also in the works, a live/acoustic EP from our On the Mend release show, new merch, and soon we will be working on album 2.

SUNRAY: Where we can find you? TBV: All social media @thebrokenview. follow us on there and send us a message, we love hearing from our fans! All of our merch is available for purchase at thebrokenview.com and we have a Patreon page (patreon.com/thebrokenview) with exclusive early access/behind the scenes content as well as weekly hangout livestreams with the band.

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

broken view tour

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

That's it! See you soon in Moscow
