Chandigarh was formed after the Indian independence, as the first planned city of post-independence India. Spread over 30 acres the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is the largest botanical garden in Asia that is dedicated to roses. The garden is named after Zakir Hussain the former President of India. Apart from roses the garden also features several verities of medicinal herbs.

3. Pinjore Gardens

Also known as the Yadavindra Gardens , the Pinjore gardens were created by a Nawab under the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The garden was expanded and reconstructed by the Maharaja Yadavindra of the State of Patiala. The garden houses several palatial structures that display a distinct blend of the Rajasthani and Mughal styles of architecture.

4. International Dolls Museum

The Dolls museum of Chandigarh contains dolls and puppets from over 25 different countries. The museum was established in 1985 and is managed by the Indian council of Child welfare. The prime attraction of the museum is the Indian section and the toy train.

5. Terraced Garden

A perfect picnic spot, the Terraced garden is spread around an area of 10 acres and is a well maintained botanical garden at the foothills of the Himalayan Shivalik Range. The Garden was established in 1979 and is best visited during the evening hours to experience the cool breeze and tranquil environment.

6. Le Corbusier Centre

The office was named after and used by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier . Le Corbusier used the building as his office during the time he was commissioned to plan the city of Chandigarh. The center has now been converted into a museum dedicated to the architect and displays the life and times of Le Corbusier.

7. ChattBir Zoo

Also known as the Mahendra Chaudhry Zoological Park , the zoo houses a huge number of exotic and wild animals, birds and reptiles. The thing to watch out for at this zoo is the famous lion safari.

It is the dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is the main hub from where tourists travel to the Shimla and Kullu-Manali region. The name Chandigarh derived from the temple of Chandi Mandir, an ancient temple devoted to Hindu Goddess Chandi, near the city. According to early history, the area was first inhabited by the Harappans, the earliest civilizations, around 8000 years ago. It was a prosperous place during medieval times and a part of the Punjab Province. During the partition of India, the state of Punjab was split between Pakistan and India. The awesome architectural design of the Capitol Complex is credited to renowned architect and designer, Le Corbusier. According to the initial design of the complex, there is a planned fourth building to complement the three current edifices that form the Legislative assembly, the High Court, and the Secretariat. The fourth building is intended to be Governor’s Palace, the Raj Bahavan, or a Museum of Knowledge. However, these plans have not yet come into fruition but the attraction still stands as an awesome sight to behold. The three existing building of the Capitol Complex nevertheless stand majestically as a representation of the temples of democracy in a modern and free India.

On their first visit to the Capitol Complex, tourists are welcomed by the stunning Open Hand Monument which is centrally located within the complex. The Open Hand Monument was also designed by the legendary architect who designed the entire complex, and this wonderful metallic sculpture also doubles up as the official Chandigarh emblem. The entire complex was built from the year 1951-1959 beginning with the High Court, followed by the Secretariat, and finally the Legislative Assembly.

Rose Gardens

These magnificent rose gardens hold the title of being the largest Rose Gardens in the entire Asian continent. The Rose Gardens in Chandigarh boast of approximately 1,600 varieties of roses that are spread over an area covering 27 acres. Not only does the Rose Gardens host roses, but also medicinal trees including behera, harar, bel, camphor, as well as yellow gulmohar and other unique and rare specimen trees that add flavor to beauty of these gardens. This tourist attraction is a 3 sq km rain fed manmade lake which was developed by damming a seasonal stream, Sukhna Chore, which flows down from the Shivalik Valley. The damming of this seasonal stream was actually done because the stream’s seasonal flow used to directly enter the lake thus leading to heavy siltation. In order to keep a check on the inflow of silt into the lake, a 2,542 hectare piece of land was reclaimed in the stream’s catchment area and it was put under natural vegetation.

The Lake is a major Chandigarh tourist attraction, and it is a place for people of all ages. During weekend, you can listen to melodious music performances by various artists who perform at the shores of the lake. The lake also forms a great picnic spot for family outings, and it is very peaceful for a place with many people. In the evenings, the place comes alive as outdoor concerts are performed on the lake’s shores till late in the night. Children will especially find the attraction fascinating anytime of the day as there are many things to do. Children can enjoy boat rides, toy train rides, and other kinds of water sports.

During the winter months, the lake plays host to flocks of migratory birds such as the Siberian Duck, Cranes, Storks, as well as numerous other species of migratory birds. Further, the lake is a protected national wetland.

Rock Garden

The railway station is only 8 kilometers from Chandigarh City Center, and two trains operate two train connections each day between the city and Delhi. Chandi Mandir is a famous temple that is dedicated to the goddess of power, Chandi Devi. According to Hindu religion, the temple is actually a Siddh Peeth, which means that this is a place where people believe that dreams do come true. In addition, most visitors will be surprised to know that the city of Chandigarh was actually named after the Chandi Mandir Temple. The former festival, Durga Puja, is conducted for 16 days and it is believed according to Hindu Religion that the goddess Maa Katak Chandi sits and rules at the heart of the city of Chandigarh. The deity is represented by a statue of a woman with four hands holding a noose (Paasha), a goad (Ankusha), gestures that dispel fear (Abhaya), and grantin boon (Varada). The goddess Mandi is worshiped everyday as the universe’s queen (Bhuvaneshvari) by the Sevayatas who belong to Utkala Brahmins.

Shankar’s International Dolls Museum

Shankar’s International Dolls Museum is one of the most amazing tourist places near Chandigarh. It was established by K. Shankar Pillai, a popular political cartoonist (1902-1989). The museum is an ideal tourist spot for art lovers as the doll museum boasts of having one of the biggest collections of costume dolls all over the world. The museum is housed on the first floor of the Children’s Book Trust building in Delhi. The museum is divided into two sections which have more than 160 glass cases, mounted on the walls.

Exhibits from the U.K. and European Countries, the U.S., Australia, Commonwealth of independent States, and New Zealand are held in one section, while another section displays exhibits from Africa, other Asian states and the Middle East, and India. In addition, the museum has a special exhibit display of a collection of more than 150 varieties of authentic Indian costume dolls which are produced at an adjacent Dolls Workshop.

The dolls that are produced at the Dolls Workshop, which is attached to the dolls museum, are either sold to Indian Museums or collectors, or they may be exchanged for gifts that the museum gets from abroad. Each one of the handcrafted dolls has beautiful physical attributes, as well as dressings and jewelry that represent individual personality. The award winning dolls boasts of the First Prize-Golden Peacock Feather in 1980 in Poland, Cracow at the Dolls Biennale. Shankar was inspired to begin collecting dolls after receiving a doll from a Hungarian ambassador during the early 50’s, which was supposed to be offered as prize at the Shankar’s International Children’s Competition.

Remains of aquatic and amphibian life have been unearthed from this place while archaeologists have excavated stone instruments, copper ware and ornaments dating back to Harappan civilization. Chandigarh History

Early developments.

After Indian partition in 1947, the search for a new capital for Punjab intensified. There were two main reason behind this — the first being to reconstruct and reorganize the state of Punjab, while the second reason was to provide shelter to the expatriates form Pakistan. Formerly, the cities of Ludhiana, Ambala and Chandigarh were considered for the bait. The proposition was to select a location that was fit to relocate the refugees to a new town. Chandigarh was not only located far from the enemy border but also seemed to be cost effective in terms of reconstruction. After Chandigarh was chosen as the capital city, strong initiatives were taken towards the planning and development of the city.

Most of the early planning was undertaken under the able guidance of Shri P.N. Thapar, a member of the Indian civil services in the year 1949. He was assisted by Shri P.L. Varma, the chief Engineer of the state. Even though Independent India was eager to rebuild another city after the loss of Lahore with the help of their team of experts, they were not very successful as they faced many technical glitches initially. The main hitch was lack of experienced architectural skills in the country. During that period, architectural professionals were almost non-existent and such practices were not seen in the sub-continent. So the Government of India was forced to seek the help of the American architects Albert Mayer and Matthew Nowicki. Albert Mayer had previously worked with the Indian Government during the World War II where he was responsible for building airstrips in the state of Bengal. Later on, he went on to construct a few hamlets in the Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh under the management of Jawaharlal Nehru. The project held great importance to Jawaharlal Nehru as it represented the first signs of progressive Independent India. Nehru had mentioned that the construction of Chandigarh was a symbol of country’s conviction in the future. The first site plan comprised of two river beds along with a Super Block that included commercial centre, educational institutions and public health.

Further Developments

By 1950, the project was almost ready to kickoff when Mayer’s co-partner Matthew Nowicki passed away in an unfortunate plane crash and most of the work at Chandigarh came to a standstill. Mayer was unable to progress ahead with the developments in the construction of the city. Later, in the same year, a French architect by the name Le Corbusier was invited to complete the task. Several important skyscrapers where designed and built by him with the help of his team of assistants, Maxwell Fry, his wife Jane Drew and Pierre Jeanneret. Le Corbusier tried to retain most of the original master plan with minor modifications. After that there was no stopping the construction activities in the city.

Political Changes

From 1952 to 1966, the capital of the state Punjab remained as Chandigarh, after which the city became a union territory. Since it was situated in the border of Punjab and Haryana, it was named as the capital of both the states, despite the treaty signed by Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 agreeing that the city would become a part of Punjab, and Haryana would get a few villages in the southern part of Punjab. Many political analysts believed that the transfer of Chandigarh to one particular state is not possible even today, because of its strategic location and its thriving economy.
