Description

This 2014 Château La Tour Carnet  is mainly composed of Merlot : 68%, completed by 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot . It displays a purple-tinted inky colour. The nose is dominated by the ageing process and presents an expression of black fruits when swirling the glass. The wine seems full-bodied with a great texture. The palate of this  Haut-Medoc Fourth Classified Growth is solidly built on a sappy tannic structure, without being aggressive. In the retro-olfaction, the black fruit can be found again. The end of the ageing process should allow the tannic power to refine and become rounder. It is a wine full of power.

Full body, dark plum, oak, dark cherries, licorice, soft and round. More powerful than I remember from other years. Good long finish.

Decant for an hour. The color is dark purple. Nose of dark fruit, herbs, leather. Espresso, gravel, and vanilla on the palate. Low acidity. Mouthfeel was juicy, very smooth and dense. A bit of sweetness at aftertaste. Longer decanting would benefit.

Not the typical Bordeaux I usually drink, probably because of relatively less cab Sauvignon. Full body, fruity(cherry, blueberry, liquorice) and medium long finish. A bit of sweetness at aftertaste. Special and delightful. Very good value for money.

Couleur sombre. Décanté 2 h. Nez peu présent. Très agréable en bouche, plutôt boisé, avec des impressions de griottes. Bonne longueur. Belle association avec un gigot.

A good quality young wine. Bit mature from my last tasting.

Description.

The 2014 La Tour Carnet was a wine that I tasted last year from bottle, so why not give it another whirl to remind readers of its quality. There is a lot going on aromatically with plenty of boisterous black cherry and raspberry fruit, maintaining that floral element that I discerned last year. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, perhaps the oak on this bottle a little more conspicuous than before, but that will be subsumed with two or three years in bottle. About this wine.

Chateau La Tour Carnet

La Tour Carnet has 42 hectares of vineyards in St-Laurent in the Haut-Médoc . The wine is typically a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon , 33% Merlot , 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. La Tour Carnet produces dry, medium-bodied, classically made clarets that show at their best with 5 years of bottle ageing.

Médoc

The Médoc is arguably the most famous red wine district in the world, home to many of the greatest and most renowned names of Bordeaux . It stretches north-west from the city of Bordeaux with the Gironde estuary to the east. The vineyards extend up to eight miles from the river and run for about 50 miles northwards. It is a surprisingly dull landscape, with the best land found on gravelly outcrops.

The most northerly, low-lying vineyards are classified as Bas-Médoc, whilst those on higher ground, closer to the city of Bordeaux, are entitled to the Haut-Médoc appellation.  Within that appellation, there are further communal or village appellations, namely Listrac and Moulis , and the four great names of St. Estèphe , Pauillac , St Julien and Margaux .  As a rule of thumb, the greatest wines are made at those properties closest to the river.

Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon lends itself particularly well in blends with Merlot. This is actually the archetypal Bordeaux blend, though in different proportions in the sub-regions and sometimes topped up with Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. In the Médoc and Graves the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend can range from 95% ( Mouton-Rothschild ) to as low as 40%. It is particularly suited to the dry, warm, free- draining, gravel-rich soils and is responsible for the redolent cassis characteristics as well as the depth of colour, tannic structure and pronounced acidity of Médoc wines. However 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be slightly hollow-tasting in the middle palate and Merlot with its generous, fleshy fruit flavours acts as a perfect foil by filling in this cavity. In St-Emilion and Pomerol , the blends are Merlot dominated as Cabernet Sauvignon can struggle to ripen there - when it is included, it adds structure and body to the wine. Sassicaia is the most famous Bordeaux blend in Italy and has spawned many imitations, whereby the blend is now firmly established in the New World and particularly in California and   Australia .

The history of La Tour Carnet is inextricably linked with that of France. The name of the property, for instance, comes from the name of the estate’s horseman who unfailingly aided his master to fight off French royalty at the end of the One Hundred Years War. Then, after having played a major role in the revolution of the Médoc vineyard, La Tour Carnet was duly recognised for the quality of its wine, when the estate was ranked in the 1855 classification of Grands Crus. The diversity of its terroir on the one hand, and the constant search for perfection on the other, have made this Haut-Médoc an outstanding growth.

Les Pensées De La Tour Carnet

A little bit of history.

On the road to Saint-Julien Beychevelle, within crossbow arrow range of the church, the quadrangular tower of Château La Tour Carnet stands imposingly opposite its grand iron gate.

Over the years, the stone walls surrounding this real feudal château have witnessed a great number of events and stories.

From the 12 th century to the present day, from the One Hundred Years’ War to the great phylloxera epidemic, La Tour Carnet has survived with dignity the turmoil brought by man and time. Since the 16 th century, great care and attention have been lavished on the vines and the wines.

These efforts were rewarded in 1855, during the Paris Universal Exhibition, when Château La Tour Carnet entered into the very select circle of the Grands Crus Classés.

With characteristic passion and rigour, Bernard Magrez has sought to take his Grand Cru Classé Haut-Médoc to even loftier heights.

To appreciate what gives the wines of La Tour Carnet their richness and unique character, an understanding is required of the exceptional nature of its terroir and the excellence of its vine-growing and winemaking methods.

The terroir of Château La Tour Carnet is a veritable patchwork of terrains comprising great diversity.

Using a drone (one of the latest techniques acquired by Bernard Magrez) to analyse the vineyard plots from the air, has led to an enhanced understanding of which grape varieties are most suited to each plot. The terroir of La Butte, for example, is more conducive to Merlot, while the slopes are better-suited to Cabernet.

However, achieving the highest quality grapes is of little use without meticulous winemaking to exploit their potential.

This is why, for several years now, Château La Tour Carnet has returned to traditional methods based largely on work done by hand.

The 75 grape variety collection

According to current climate change forecasts, temperatures should increase over the next years by 2°C to 4°C. By 2050, the Bordeaux wine-growing region could be facing extreme climatic conditions that would have repercussions on grape ripening (lower acidity and an increase in sugar levels and alcoholic degrees). The question facing us is whether the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc will still be the best-suited grape varieties for the production of Bordeaux Grand Cru Classé wines. To address this issue, Mr Bernard Magrez created in 2013 a private collection of 75 different grape varieties. The purpose of this collection is to identify the “grape varieties of tomorrow” which would cope well with the future hazards of climate change.

In the heart of its Gardens, the thousand-year-old olive trees and the imposing Cedar of Lebanon watch in silence over the Castle, revealing all in subtlety its period charms.

Laguna Cellar featuring Château La Tour Carnet

Château La Tour Carnet is one of the older properties in the Haut Médoc.  This Fourth Growth estate is one of the few that has a working moat and drawbridge.  Visiting the Château La Tour Carnet feels a bit like traveling back in time - to the middle ages to be exact. Château La Tour Carnet is without a doubt a stunning property, and the wines from this estate are no slouch either.  The quality here has improved over the decades, yet prices still remain low due to the large quanity produced.  As the largest property in size in Médoc, Château La Tour Carnet presents great value examples of the Haut Médoc terroir .    Château La Tour Carnet has been around for around 800 years.  Records of this property date all the way back to the 11th Century.  The property was inhabited by the English and used as a military outpost during the 12th Century.  It was originally named Château de St. Laurent, and the land was eventually annexed by the French.  After the 100 Years War, Château La Tour Carnet was nearly ruined, before it was obtained by Charles de Leutken who revitalized the estate.  Château La Tour Carnet was classified as a Fourth Growth during the 1855 Classification.  It stayed in the Leutken family for generations until it was acquired by a titan in the wine industry, Bernard Magrez in 1999.  Bernard Magrez owns numerous estates in Bordeaux, one of which is the legendary Château Pape Clement in the Pessac-Leognan appellation.   The terroir of Château La Tour Carnet is some of the most unique in the Haut Médoc appellation.  The estate sits on a giant clay and limestone plateau, with a very unique type of Garonne and Pyrenean gravel.   Merlot flourishes in these types of gravel, which is why the majority of the vineyard is planted with Merlot – something very unique in the normally Cabernet-centric appellation of the Haut Médoc.  In addition to the vines of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Château La Tour Carnet also produces some white wines.  The property has plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Gris – a favorite of Bernard Magrez – and Muscadelle.  Technically white grapes are against the law in the Haut Médoc AOC, so the white wine produced by Château La Tour Carnet is labeled as a generic AOC Bordeaux Blanc.   Château La Tour Carnet also has a very interesting winemaking process.  The grapes are whole berry fermented, after being cooled to 8 degrees Celcius in a cryogenic tunnel by using liquid Azote – a form of Nitrogen gas.  The wines are then vinified in a range of wood vats and stainless-steel tanks.  A small portion of the wine is aged in large, clay amphorae to provide a freshness to the wine.   It is recommended that the wines spend a little bit of time aging in bottle before they are enjoyed.  The wine of Château La Tour Carnet typically shows best after approximately 5-7 years of bottle aging.  Younger vintages can be decanted for a couple hours for the wine to express its delicate aromas.

Tasting Notes

"The 2014 La Tour Carnet was a wine that I tasted last year from bottle, so why not give it another whirl to remind readers of its quality. There is a lot going on aromatically with plenty of boisterous black cherry and raspberry fruit, maintaining that floral element that I discerned last year. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, perhaps the oak on this bottle a little more conspicuous than before, but that will be subsumed with two or three years in bottle." chateau la tour carnet 2014

Bernard Magrez acquires the prestigious Château La Tour Carnet in 2000.

He is today the sole owner of 4 Grands Crus Classés of Bordeaux, including Château Pape Clément (Grand Cru Classé de Graves), Château Fombrauge (Saint-Emilion Grand Cru) and Clos Haut Peyraguey (Premier Grand Cru Classé of 1855 in Sauternes).

His adventure continues in France and abroad with the acquisition of 42 vineyards in 10 countries around the world, which represent as many types of wine and as many emotions that he wishes to share with lovers of quality wines.

The keys to excellence

"These keys symbolize my permanent quest for excellence and guarantee the consumer the quality of the wines that I offer, having benefited from the vinification methods that I use for my Grands Crus."

Indeed, Bernard Magrez makes it a real point of honor to bring the same care to his 42 vineyards as to his four Grands Crus Classés. It is of paramount importance to know how to make the most of the terroir in order to produce exceptional wines.

This symbol of the Keys, opening the doors to discovery, knowledge or even emotion, is the symbol chosen by Bernard Magrez as an element of recognition and signature of all of his wines. They represent the guarantee and the personal commitment of the owner to offer you the best quality products.

Finally, they are an invitation to push the door of our Grands Crus Classés, open to the public and which welcomes you throughout the year to make you discover the universe and the wines of Bernard Magrez.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
