The capital of the Kingdom of Kongo was known as Mbanza-Kongo present day Angola and the kingdom had as many as 500,000 people at that time. Portuguese sailors  arrived to the kingdom of Congo in the 15the century and requested for slaves from King Afonso the 6 th ruler of the kingdom of Kongo. The king raided the neighboring districts for slaves.

From the 15 th century to the 18 th century, the west African coast was targeted for transatlantic slave trade. Several millions of people were enslaved and sent to sugar plantations in Brazil, Caribbean and United States.

Henry Morton Stanley explored most parts of present day Congo in 1870, from 1885-1908, Leopold Il of Belgium privately owned Congo and called it Congo free state. He hosted a geographic conference in Brussels inviting members of geographical societies, famous explorers and philanthropists to participate in humanitarian endeavor  for Europeans to take central Africa to improve and civilize the lives of indigenous people.

Leopold was elected chairman for international African association, he hired Henry Morton Stanley  to help gain foothold of the region and later annex the region for his selfish benefits. Henry Morton Stanley went on a mission to Congo where he set up treaties with local natives and local chiefs claiming a large area along the Congo basin and established military posts. He also built a road from the lower Congo to Stanley pool.

Leopold later owned a large block by proxy in Congo with other several business mem who also had shares. In the Berlin conference of 1884, Leopold had gained control in over 2,600,000 kilometers squared of land of Congo free state.

In 1885, Leopold’s personal organization received 2,344,000 kilometers squared with over 30 million people, France was. Given 666,000 kilometers squared from the north bank and Portugal received 909,000 kilometers squared.

In 1908, government  took over the region from Leopold and established Belgian Congo. There are up rises later of by the Congo people leading them to gain independence in 1960. Although they gained independence,  there were wrangles between the local native leaders that led to cold war led by colonel Joseph Mobutu in 1965.

Mobutu Africanized the country renaming it Zaire and also changed his Joseph name to Mobutu Sese Seko and also asked the locals to change their western names to African names. Rwanda later invaded Zaire at the First Congo war where Mobutu lost his powers.

Laurent Desire Kabila took over Zaire and renamed it the Democratic Republic of Congo. The second Congo war later emerged and Kabila was assassinated by his body guard in 2001. Kabila was succeeded by his son whom Congolese elected president in 2006 and 2011. Felix Tshisekedi was elected president in the year 2018.

Culture and customs.

It’s hard not to look over the river to neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital city Kinshasa and note how much more appealing Brazzaville is. Brazzaville is generally cleaner and safer to visit, and the Congolese are renowned for their warm and welcoming nature. While Republic of Congo is a distinctly African nation, comprised of a diverse people with many traditional languages and customs, a century of French colonial rule has shaped some of the more modern aspects of Congolese culture.

Travellers will find French patisseries and bakeries alongside traditional Congolese cuisine, and much of the architecture in major cities can be attributed to French influences. While the official language of the country is French, traditional languages still play a vital role in relations between locals. Today, half the Congolese people follow traditional animist beliefs, while the other half are mostly Christian, with a small Muslim minority.

Eating and drinking

Congolese cuisine is a mix of several different influences that speak to the country’s varied history. A combination of French, Arabic and Asian cooking styles and ingredients have influenced the traditional African cuisine. In Brazzaville you can find French patisseries beside Indian and Chinese restaurants, while restaurants serving more authentic local cuisine will often serve chicken or goat dishes, as well as freshwater fish pulled right from the river. In coastal Pointe-Noire you’re more likely to find seafood, but arguably some of the best meals you’ll have anywhere in the country – for food and atmosphere – will be from the open-air grills you pass on the road.

The drink of choice in Republic of Congo is palm wine, an alcoholic drink made by fermenting the sap of a wild palm tree. Beer and wine are also common staples in bars and restaurants.

Must-try foods in Republic of Congo

1. Pili pili

A spicy chilli sauce you’ll find accompanying most meals.

2. Plantains

Bananas that think they’re potatoes. They make excellent chips.

3. Goat stew

A traditional Congolese dish, usually served with a cassava porridge called fufu, or cubes of cassava root called manioc.

Most markets will sell a variety of freshwater fish, which is a common staple for many of the Congolese. Makobe is fish seasoned with chilli and cooked in marantacee leaves.

A purple fruit, usually boiled and salted.

Geography and environment

The Republic of Congo is in the tropical rainforest region of Central Africa, so expect humidity and high temperatures, with averages of around 26 degrees Celsius (78.8 degrees Fahrenheit). It has distinct dry and wet seasons, with rain falling from March to June, and the drier months from June to October. The Congo River forms much of the country’s eastern border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, flowing down from the swamplands in the north of the country. Large areas of the country’s north are swamp, grassland and rainforest, with most people living in the towns at the southern end of the state. The south-western coast of the country lies on the Atlantic Ocean where the Congo River empties.

The best shopping experiences of Republic of Cong can be found in Brazzaville, where vibrant marketplaces and shops are plentiful. The larger and more popular markets are Ouenze and Moungali, while Avenue Foch is known for its street vendors. The Poto Poto neighbourhood hosts the Artist’s Market, where local artists have a wide variety of works for sale, including paintings and carved wooden figures and masks. Just outside Brazzaville are the villages of Makana and M’Pila, where you can purchase wares from local potters and basket-weavers in open-air markets.

Festivals and events

The Congo has a proud tradition of music and dance, and many of the large events held in the country centre around that tradition. Here are some of the bigger festivals and events to look out for.

Feux De Brazza

An international music festival in Brazzaville, held every two years, (alternating with the Pan-African Music Festival). The popular celebration encourages traditional cultural exchange, with a multitude of artists and performers taking part. The festival’s self-proclaimed purpose is to safeguard African traditions and to challenge younger generations to help preserve their culture of music and dance.

The Pan-African Music Festival is a lot of things. It’s held every two years (alternating with Feux De Brazza) and you can catch musical performances, visit a permanent exhibition of musical instruments, take part in musical training workshops, as well as witness the Miss FESPAM pageant.

Golden Tam-Tam

The Congo’s answer to the Grammy Awards, the Golden Tam-Tam is an award ceremony that promotes and commends the endeavours of Congo’s local musicians, giving out awards for modern, traditional and religious music with a lot of fanfare and enthusiasm.

  • Planes from South Africa, Kenya, and France all land at Brazzaville’s international airport.

Congo Safari Packages: Our Top Picks

The Republic of the Congo (the Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville) is a small country along the west coast of Africa. This basin is drained by rivers like the Sangha, Mambili, and the mighty Congo, which give a route through the jungle to far-flung national parks like Odzala-Kokoua . The wilderness is especially prized and traditional ways of life are preserved in certain areas. The heavy forested landscape is characterized by swamps, bais, and rivers; this is ideal habitat for western lowland gorillas; and it is the remarkable wildlife interactions accessible here that are attracting more and more tourists to the Congo . The highlight for visitors is gorilla trekking, which should not be missed.

Despite its tumultuous history, the French colony of Congo-Brazzaville is presently seen as tranquil, stable, and fast developing. Brazzaville, the capital, is sometimes referred to as the “Little Paris of Africa” due to the abundance of art, fabric booths, flower markets, cafés, and the aroma of freshly baked baguettes wafting from the city’s many boulangeries.

Still, tourism has only been around for a short while. Its cities may not be up to five-star standards, but its wilderness areas and wildlife encounters are, thanks to its relative isolation for so long. The Congo is an amazing place to visit if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty.

Congo, a mythical name that appeals to the imagination and forever known as the heart of darkness, after the novel by Joseph Conrad. A country that has already known many gory pages and often appears negatively in the media. A land that seems impenetrable, with deep rainforests, mighty rivers with wild rapids and mysterious animals that only occur in Congo such as the okapi and the bonobo, but also the infamous tiger fish, the largest of which are only found in the Congo River. In the jungle you will find gorillas, elephants and leopards and in the east, in addition to snow-capped mountains, green hills and volcanoes, you will also find the largest lava lake in the world.

A country with a deep history, hundreds of tribes and languages, a fascinating culture, colorful figures such as the sapeurs and a rich music scene led by artists such as Fally Ipupa and Koffi Olomide with ndombolo and rumba as the most famous genres. A country that is home to countless creatives who can create the most beautiful works of art and handmade furniture and who also produce top football players, just think of Lukaku. A country where you can have a chat with anyone and within two minutes you have found your new best friend, from the street vendor to the taxi driver or a chance meeting with a minister or general.

The country is not only home to beautiful deep forests and countless animals, but also to megacities such as Goma, Lubumbashi and Kinshasa, the latter of which has an estimated population of anywhere from 14 million to 17 million, depending on the source you consult and the city is on track to become one of the most populous cities in the world by 2050.

There are remnants of the Belgian colonization all over the country, of which a number of buildings are still in perfect condition. For example, in Kinshasa we find a number of beautiful monasteries and churches, and in Kisantu we also find a perfectly preserved cathedral built in orange brick and surrounded by many beautiful old colonial buildings. It is also home to the beautiful National Botanical Garden, which is one of the most beautiful places in Bas-Congo and Kinshasa.

Near Kisangani we find Yangambi, an impressive research center built by the Belgians and located in perfect condition among the greenery of the brousse. Another well-hidden secret is Stanley’s boat which is in the harbor of Kinshasa and which very few people know about. Congo is home to many nature reserves and national parks, of which the Virunga Park, led by Prince de Merode, with the Nyiragongo Volcano and the mountain gorillas is the most famous park in Congo. A lot less known, but no less beautiful is the Garamba Park in the far northeast, where we find lions and leopards on the savannah in addition to elephants and giraffes. Besides Virunga Park, it is the only national park with somewhat touristic infrastructure and lodges.

Congo Voyages offers tours and group tours in Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville and the Central African Republic. Because we live in Congo ourselves and have a lot of experience in setting up numerous trips such as expeditions, as well as with logistical support for companies, we are your ideal partner for a trip to Congo. We are the only travel agency that offers tours in Congo, whose management is actually located in Congo. Do not be fooled by copycats that offer similar programs and then do not or only partially fulfill their promises. And if a price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

We work with local guides, some of whom are affiliated with the Ministry of Tourism. We also train a number of young enthusiastic people, who mainly come from the artist world, such as photographers, models and people from the event sector (who have a lot of experience in setting things up).

Take a look at our website. We offer trips starting from 1 person, but we also work with group trips. We have some excellent programs in Bas-Congo and Kinshasa, also offer bonobo excursions, programs in Katanga, but also in Eastern Congo such as Virunga Park and Garamba Park and also deep in the heart of the country such as Salonga. We are also happy to make tailor-made trips if desired, such as a sailing on the Congo River or longer trips.

If you have any questions, feel free to send us an email and we will answer you questions with pleasure.

Choosing the best Congo Safari Operators & Travel Agencies for your next safari

Travelers planning for a trip to DR Congo must consider a number of factors before choosing safari operators & travel agencies for their next tour. Look out for the following;

Trips to DR Congo is a very unpredictable and experience of the operator matter a lot. Your travel agency should be experienced enough to plan your safari to Virunga national park, Kahuzi Biega and other travel destinations in Congo.  An experienced tour company should be able to guide you on the best routes, handle security checks along the way and give proper travel distance accurately to handle your trip without issues.

Travel package offered

This is a major factor travelers consider before settling down with an agency or operator to arrange a safari to Virunga national park and other destinations in DR Congo. A good tour package must have less driving time, more time for activities, price friendly, at least standard facilities and provide the best memorable experiences.

DR Congo is a very big country; however most exciting tours are carried out in the eastern part more so in the Virunga conservation area. Other travel destinations are far apart from each other and the driving distances tend to be long therefore if your safari isn’t planned well, you might end up spending more time driving than carrying out activities or you will drive for long hours and feel tired to carry out activities. The driving distance should always be short to enable guests to be in good shape for your next adventure activity.

Always avoid being cheated for Congo travel packages that cost less. Pricing a package is not as easy as you may think and it takes time and experience. Therefore, the cost of the package should favor your travel needs and preferences with value for money.

Inquiring with multiple travel agencies will give you an insight of the price range for a safari in DR Congo otherwise it is hard to determine how much a package can cost when you inquire with one or two Congo tour operators.

Customer Care

How respondent is the Congo travel agency you are booking a safari with? How do they respond to your inquiries? Is the communication perfect or rather just like any other normal business communication? Customer care portrays itself right from your first inquiry to the time of confirming your trip. Therefore, you should take it seriously.

The assumption is, any company that communicates with you is more likely to offer the very best service during your travel in DR Congo. Some guests interact with tour consultants to the extent of asking them to accompany them during their safari.

Affiliations to Travel Associations

Is the Safari Operators & Travel Agencies you are dealing with affiliated to any travel associations in the country or outside the country? Currently, the most powerful travel association in Uganda is Association of Uganda Tour operators (AUTO), Association des Tours Operateurs et Agences de Voyage en RDC (ATOAV-RDC) in DR Congo, Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO) in Kenya, Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) in Tanzania, Rwanda Tours and Travel Association (RTTA) in Rwanda among others.

These local travel associations guarantee you financial security and have a list of guidelines for travel agencies & tour operators which help to maintain a list of only credible operators as their members.

It’s very uncertain to hear that a member of any association has engaged into a wrong activity.

There are some circumstances when you feel comfortable with a nonmember of any association. Do not rule them out because they lack the affiliation because they can still offer you a lifetime safari experience at friendly costs. Simply look at their past reviews and make a decision.

Is the Congo Safari Operators & Travel Agencies fully registered?

There are a number of ways to find out if a safari company is registered and incorporated to operate within the laws of their respective countries.

First of all, make deposits onto the company bank accounts (only registered companies get company bank accounts), You can also check for their membership in any local based association (Before becoming a member, travel associations request for original company registration documents before approval and listing companies on their websites) and checking for their membership on Safari Bookings (They also request for scanned original company documents before listing members).

There are many other ways to find out if the agency is fully registered to run safaris however, we have listed for you the easiest way to track.

However, making deposits to company bank accounts and checking for membership of the company in any association is the best way so far. We don’t highly recommend Safari Bookings option because anyone can forge documents and get listed.

What if the travel agency or tour operator you are dealing with is registered in another country? This happens so much! The only way is to make deposits on the company bank accounts. The above list is made up of only fully registered travel agencies based in Uganda and run safaris in the entire East African region.

What does Tripadvisor or Safari Bookings say about Safari Operators & Travel Agencies in Congo?

These platforms are very important to travelers planning for a trip in Congo and they tell a lot about a safari company or agency. They host reviews from past guests which can help you identify the bad and good safari companies to deal with. Visit them, look for reviews and if you come across any bad reviews about a Congo tour operator that is related to financial problems, we strongly advise you not to book with that company. Your best travel agencies in DR Congo or any other destination in East Africa should have at least a 4.5 plus review rating on TripAdvisor and Safari Bookings.

Google Business Verification

This may not matter a lot however; it helps you locate the exact offices of a tour operator on a google map. Most reputable Congo travel agencies and safari operators have their businesses verified on google maps and this can be confirmed by looking right of search results on Google’s Knowledge Graph.

How to Make Safe and Secure Payments for your Congo Travel Safari and Tour.

We would say not so many payment methods are supported by majority of safari operators in DR Congo and Africa in general however, we have managed to list down some of the most common and safe methods you can use to make payments for your trip to Africa.

  • Bank transfer (EFT)

Currently direct bank transfers to company bank accounts is the safest way of making payments for your African safari to Congo and any other destination. This method commonly known as Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), wire transfer or whatever you may call it. Funds transferred via this method normally takes 4 – 7 working days to reflect on the tour operators’ accounts.

Pros ; Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) are supported worldwide and is very effective especially when it comes to trust. Wiring money onto the company bank accounts is one way of possible ways to know that you are dealing with a fully registered travel agency because such accounts are only offered to registered safari tour operators and travel agencies. All tour operators in Congo and East African region support EFT, hence, the coverage is quite high compared to other methods of payment.

Cons; The charges associated with Electronic Funds Transfer, is usually high depending on the bank you are sending money to. In an incident where the operator mistakenly provides you with a local currency like UGX account instead of a USD or EURO account, the money would be converted to the local currency automatically at the bank rate which is quite low compared to the normal rates in the market for example 1 dollar may cost about UGX 3500 from Forex Bureaus but UGX 3100 from a bank which is quite a low exchange rate. Always confirm with your travel agency if you are sending money to USD / EURO account instead of a local currency account.

Pesapal works pretty much the same like 2CheckOut however, 2CheckOut is more powerful, well established and supports most countries around the world. Through Pesapal, you can securely make payments using a credit card (VISA & MASTERCARD) direct to travel agencies’ account through an embedded form that should exist on their respective websites. Pesapal normally sends a notification through your email with a payment confirmation link as a verification measure.

Pros; Pesapal is very easy to use and is definitely one of the most reliable ways to make credit card payments to Africa. A few operators have point of sale machines (POS) in Congo and within East African region therefore; most agencies use Pesapal to process card payments. Another advantage is the low surcharge of about 3.5% of the total amount to process your payments.

Cons; At tines the system of Pesapal isn’t yet stable and up to standard. You might not feel the weight on your end but several travel agencies & safari operators in Congo complain about their services. Their customer care is not that standard and you can’t be guaranteed that they will charge your credit card, we have had scenarios when correct details fail to be charged via Pesapal and allow to be charged via a POS machine with same details. We would say that their system isn’t yet up to standard but it works just well.

  • Credit card

Yes, you should provide your credit card details to only trust worthy Congo travel agencies and safari operators. A few agencies have point of sale machines and are able to charge your credit card directly if you provide them with valid details.

Pros; Transfers done using credit cards are very quick and can be initiated easily irrespective of where you are. Bank processes are bit complicated compared to credit card payments hence you can save yourself from a lot of hustle making payments through credit cards.

Cons; Very few travel agencies / operators have POS machines. Most of them rely on Electronic Funds Transfer / Wire Transfers hence making payments using a credit card might be hard if a company lacks a Pesapal account.

Methods to avoid

You can make safe and secure payments for your African safari travel and tour using any of the above-mentioned methods however try as hard as you can to avoid transferring money on personnel bank accounts, use of Western Union, MoneyGram, Skrill (MoneyBookers), Payza, cryptocurrencies, PerfectMoney among others that we haven’t recommended. Many scammers use such payment platforms to process their payments therefore, always think twice before making any transactions through them unless you are very sure of the safari company you are dealing with.
