features & specs

No small city car has as much charm or is as much fun to drive as the 2021 mini cooper..

What kind of vehicle is the 2021 Mini Cooper? What does it compare to?

The 2021 Mini Cooper small hatchback can be had as a two- or four-door hardtop, or in two-door form as a convertible, electric SE, or performance-oriented John Cooper Works (JCW). It doesn’t have many natural competitors left, but parent company BMW offers an X1 small crossover without the charm of the Mini Cooper.

Is the 2021 Mini Cooper a good car?

The 2021 Mini Cooper is a stylish, fun-to-drive small hatchback that makes up for its cramped space and middling safety ratings with oodles of charm. It earns a TCC Rating of 6.2 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars .)

What's new for the 2021 Mini Cooper?

The welcome return of a 6-speed manual transmission across most of the lineup headlines the biggest developments for the smallest Mini for 2021. The Sidewalk Edition returns exclusively to the Cooper S convertible, the Oxford Edition can now be had with any hardtop, and the SE electric model is available to order.

The 2021 Mini Cooper effuses charm and personality, with available British heritage elements backed by BMW quality. Everything from rounded door handles to round headlights and, on the inside, circular vents and a circular head unit, make the urban runabout as cute—and as circular—as a button.

Three turbocharged engines and three transmission choices include a 184-hp battery electric vehicle with only 110 miles of range. Weighing under 3,000 pounds, the Mini Cooper and its turbo engines return fuel economy of 30 mpg combined, on average. The turbo-3 base model hustles to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds, while at the other end of the spectrum, the 228-hp turbo-4 in the JCW does it under six seconds. The Cooper S stitches together fun and value the best, and the standard 6-speed manual transmission conspires with direct steering and superb if not stiff handling for a hoot every time you get behind the wheel.

Convertible and two-door models allegedly seat four people but we wouldn’t. The longer, roomier four-door models seat five and have more cargo room, but the Cooper in either size is really meant for two, and a fun-loving mutt.

Synthetic leather upholstery graces base models while heated leather seats can be optioned, but Mini skimps on tech features that should be available if not standard on all three trims. Apple CarPlay comes standard only on the top Iconic trim, and Android Auto isn’t even available, for example.

Mini’s mixed safety scorecard is buoyed by standard automatic emergency braking, but Mini could offer more driver assist systems to improve small car safety in an SUV world.

How much does the 2021 Mini Cooper cost?

Available in three trims and four powertrains, the 2021 Mini Cooper starts reasonably enough at $23,250 but jumps to the ridiculous with the JCW convertible in top Iconic trim for $45,750.

Where is the 2021 Mini Cooper made?

It’s made in England and the Netherlands.

2021 MINI Cooper Styling

The many styles of the 2021 mini cooper hatchback reflect its cosmopolitan appeal..

Is the 2021 Mini Cooper a good-looking car?

Offered in two- and four-door styles, hardtop and convertible, gas or electric, and as many special editions as model years since the brand launched in 1959, there’s a Mini for every taste. And they all look at home in capital cities across the world, as they have for decades. Its urban chic style, quirky interior, and undeniable charm earn it a point each to an 8.

The convertible, John Cooper Works, and SE electric only come with two doors, whereas a larger four-door variant can be had with base Cooper or uprated Cooper S models.

It wears its British heritage on its sleeve—on its taillights and mirror caps—with optional Union Jack designs, and available racing stripes fuel autocross dreams.

Round, Porsche-like headlights, round fog lights, round wheel arches, rounded side mirrors, a round fuel door, and round door handle housings—even a rounded grille—give it that circular appeal that some may find too cutesy. So much so you may want to pinch the convertible’s cheeks.

The round theme carries over inside with an LED-ringed center stack, round gauges, dials, vents, and even door handles.

2021 MINI Cooper Performance

You don’t need to be a racecar driver to have fun in the 2021 mini cooper..

Three turbocharged engines and three transmission choices present a range from the punchy to the powerful. A short wheelbase, precise steering, stiff ride, and athletic suspension make every front-wheel-drive Cooper fun, by incremental degrees. It’s a 7.

Is the Mini Cooper 4WD?

No, it’s front-wheel drive only.

How fast is the Mini Cooper?

It’s quick, with a 134-hp 1.5-liter turbo-3 base model hitting 60 mph in 7.3 seconds, according to Mini. A lovely 6-speed manual lets you mash the clutch and flick through gears for a visceral experience perfectly matched for the go-kart-like thrills of the hatchback; the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic is no slouch either, but adds $1,250 to the price.

Cooper S models upgrade to a 189-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 that hits 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. It’s about $4,000 more, and hits the sweet spot for everyday driving, whereas the JCW for $6,000 more than the Cooper S removes the value proposition from Mini’s equation. It uses a 228-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4, and with the optional 8-speed automatic for another $1,500, it hits 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. It’s a hot hatch with upgrades meant for tracking, such as Brembo brakes, an electronic locking front differential, and a more aggressive suspension that can make for a jarring ride away from the track, especially with optional 18-inch wheels.

The heaviest SE electric model has a 184-hp electric motor that’s quick off the line but plateaus with increasing demand, with a 60 mph time of 6.9 seconds.

The punchy turbos mix with a go-kart like ride and road-hugging handling. The smallest Mini, with its short wheelbase and light weight, is a joy to drive, even though when cruising it rides firmly and the suspension tunes to the stiff side. It’s a worthy tradeoff once you leave the highway for tight urban turns or undulating twisties.

2021 MINI Cooper Comfort & Quality

The 2021 mini cooper is small but sophisticated..

If the name didn’t give it away, the Mini Cooper is small with limited rear seat space and cargo room. Its BMW-approved finish makes it more of a luxury car than a budget car, which restores it to a 4 here.

Two-door models seat four, and even though the JCW and Cooper S are about an inch longer, the interior dimensions remain the same, with a cramped 30.8 inches of rear leg room and only 8.7 cubic feet of hatch space. Fold down the rear seats and it balloons to crossover proportions with 34 cubic feet of space.

Predictably, the convertible holds only 7.6 cubic feet of cargo, total.

Four-door models are 6.3 inches longer, and have a 2.9-inch longer wheelbase for more interior room, including 1.5 inches more rear leg room. Mini wedged in a fifth seat, but it’s best left unoccupied. Unlike the two-door, the four-door’s hatch is functional for a vacation with 13.1 cubic feet that opens up to 40.7 cubic feet with the seats down.

For two, the 2021 Mini Cooper is a posh place to be, with standard synthetic leather seats and a 6.5-inch display or touch screen ringed by LEDs. Available leather seats with 6-way adjustability and side bolsters that hug but don’t squeeze up the comfort level.

2021 MINI Cooper Safety

Automatic emergency braking comes standard on the 2021 mini cooper..

How safe is the Mini Cooper?

Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS have completed a full run of crash tests on the Cooper in a while, so we leave it unrated.

Safety options include a $1,000 Driver Assistance Package that adds adaptive cruise control and parking sensors.

2021 mini cooper features, impressive creature comforts confound the lack of standard tech conveniences in the 2021 mini cooper..

The various body styles and powertrain choices for the 2021 Mini Cooper can further be broken down by three trim levels, Classic, Signature, and Iconic, or in other words, basic, best value, and too expensive, respectively.

For $23,250, the Classic rides on 15-inch wheels and comes with creature comforts such as synthetic leather seats. But it lacks technological conveniences such as a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay compatibility. Such features that come standard on competitors don’t come standard until the top Iconic trim that costs more than $30,000. Android Auto users should look elsewhere entirely.

That’s a money grab we don’t appreciate, so the point earned for the creature comforts gets subtracted for the lack of basic tech features. But the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with an excellent 3 years or 36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance gives Mini owners peace of mind that’s worth a point. It’s a 6.

Which Mini Cooper should I buy?

Even though it doesn’t look as good as the two-door, we prefer the convenience of the four-door hardtop Cooper S with the uprated turbo-4 in Signature trim for $32,750. It comes with LED headlights and fog lights, keyless entry, 17-inch alloy wheels, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, head-up display, panoramic roof, but you’d still have to pay for the $1,000 Navigation Package to get Apple CarPlay. Adaptive cruise control is part of another $1,000 package.

How much is a fully loaded 2021 Mini Cooper?

The top of the Mini Cooper performance and price line is the John Cooper Works two-door convertible in top Iconic trim for $45,750. It comes with a potent 228-hp turbo-4 with an 8-speed automatic, leather upholstery, Harman Kardon sound, power folding mirrors, and Apple CarPlay, bless their hearts.

2021 MINI Cooper Fuel Economy

The small 2021 mini cooper comes with several efficient powertrain choices..

Is the 2021 Mini Cooper good on gas?

Yes. Three turbocharged engines and the electric SE model let the small car go far with any powertrain choice, but the manual reduces efficiency by 1 mpg combined, on average. The most efficient and most popular base model uses a 1.5-liter turbo-3 that gets an EPA-rated 28 mpg city, 37 highway, 31 combined in convertible or either hardtop. That’s a 6.

The 2.0-liter turbo-4 hardtops get 26/35/30 mpg combined, and the extra weight of the convertible trims another 1 mpg. The more potent turbo-4 in the JCW with the manual transmission rate at 23/33/27 mpg combined.

The SE electric Cooper is the most efficient Mini, with a 110-mile range and an MPGe of 108 combined.

MINI facelift for 2021: first look, spec and prices

  • Three-door, five-door, Electric and Convertible all refreshed
  • Technology upgrades increase appeal

2021 MINI facelift

Written by Richard Kilpatrick Published: 27 January 2021 Updated: 27 January 2021

If the original MINI was known for staying still for decades, the same accusation cannot be levelled at the new MINI. Just two years after the current generation made its debut – famously with Union Flag lights – it’s been given a shiny new makeover and some shiny new tech.

Not everything is shiny, though. The word of the day for the 2021 MINI is, well, mini malism. Simplified shapes, more integrated lighting with less clutter, and less chrome on the inside and out aims to give the MINI a pure aesthetic that ensures the focus is on the profile and curves, rather than on the bling.

> Revealed: Best new cars to look forward to in 2021

2021 MINI facelift, Chili pack, red

This facelift unifies all versions of the smallest MINI – the Hatch in three- and five-door forms, the Convertible, and the Electric (which for now, remains strictly a three-door) – with a cohesive look and consistent colour and trim options. It also updates the tech and brings the engine range in line with the latest emissions standards.

What’s on the outside of the new MINI?

There are no major body changes for the 2021 MINI, but that doesn’t stop this being quite a dramatic facelift. For starters, the distinctive ‘sidelight’ style lights at the front (a direct callback to the 1959 original) have gone. Now the indicators, cornering lights and daytime running lights are incorporated into new oval headlight clusters.

These can be specified with a dark finish instead of chrome, further modernising the MINI’s look.

2021 MINI Electric facelift

It isn’t just the look that’s modernised. With the appropriate options, the MINI can now be equipped with LED-matrix adaptive lighting, including poor weather beams and cornering lights all in one unit.

The resulting smoother bumper, with improved aerodynamics, blends into restyled arches for a more cohesive look with greater use of body-colour elements. However, one aspect hasn’t been trimmed back, and that’s the grille.

Retaining some of the classic MINI hexagonal shape, the fascia’s most dominant feature is bigger and bolder, yet the grille looks less prominent thanks to a body-colour strip in the middle. Lower air intakes are larger, echoing the John Cooper Works GP style, and both front and rear bumpers have received tweaks for improved aerodynamics for economy as well as a new style.

2021 MINI Convertible, yellow

Further distinquishing the 2021 MINI is an expanded colour palette, including  Island Blue (previously restricted to the Countryman), Zesty Yellow for the Convertible, and Rooftop Grey on all models.

A new paint process for the Multitone roof, with a three-layer ‘wet’ spraying technique, ensures no hardtop MINI with the option will match another (and paint repairs will be a source of stress for years to come).

MINI five-door 2021 front view

Contrasting against the new shades, a Piano Black trim package renders the modernised winged padge and bootlid script in black, to match the blacked-out chrome trim and mirror covers.

MINI five-door 2021 front view

Can the MINI be personalised any further?

Of course – it’s a cornerstone of the MINI brand, and 2021’s fashion-conscious buyers can select from new finishes and accessories in Classic, Sport and Exclusive trim selections.

Sport models now include rear parking sensors and adaptive suspension, and can be specified in Chilli Red alongside the Piano Black exterior trim. Exclusive trim can select Enigmatic Black paint, with antracite headlining. The Convertible comes with the Union Jack Soft Top Roof as standard, too.

Differing slightly from the options for the MINI Hatch and Convertible, the MINI Electric comes with Level 1, 2 or 3 options, including features such as roof rails, active cruise control, or leather upholstery and Piano Black exterior trim. However, marking the 2021 range is a new MINI Electric Collection, which comes in Island Blue or Rooftop Grey with colour-shifting Multitone roof and the full Level 3 specification.

MINI Multitone roof, 2021 Electric Collection

Limited to just 300 examples in the UK, it also features exclusive Electric Collection 17-inch wheels and exterior graphics, and the no-cost option of having a panoramic glass roof instead.

What’s inside the new MINI?

Upgraded tech dominates the refreshed interior. In front of the driver lies a standard-fit digital display panel which is now standard on all models, having been introduced on the MINI Electric and John Cooper Works GP.

MINI Cooper S interior, 2021 facelift

The distinctive central display remains, with an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by a refreshed operating system for a wider range of capabilities, including app connectivity and an improved multi-function steering wheel. You’re more likely to notice the new mood-themed colour schemes, though, working in conjunction with ambient lighting.

Here’s the 2021 MINI engine line-up

As the MINI Electric is a stand-alone model, its 184hp electric motor is only available in the three-door body style. However, across the MINI Hatch in three- and five-door form, and the MINI Covertible, you can choose three- or four-cylinder engines of 1.5-litre or 2.0-litre respectively, but unusually, the most powerful John Cooper Works is currently only offered as a Convertible.

MINI Cooper S exhaust, 2021 facelift

This means that you can have a three or five-door MINI as a 102hp One, a 136hp Cooper, or a 178hp Cooper S, or a MINI Cooper Convertible with 136hp, 178hp Cooper S, or 231hp John Cooper Works.

All engines conform to Euro 6d emissions and are available with a six-speed manual gearbox or optional automatic.

Will the 2021 MINI drive differently?

For the most part, this is a facelift and you can’t expect much to change from behind the wheel. However, higher-specification models get the option of adaptive suspension; a first for the MINI Hatchback family. Having spent that much, you’ll probably be expecting more of your MINI’s driver assistance as well.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, then, there’s lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control available as part of the new driver assistance package. This includes the traffic-jam friendly feature of stop and go when paired with an automatic gearbox.

2021 MINI prices – from £16,045 to £36,420

Taking the entry-level engine for each model the MINI Hatch costs £16,045 for a three-door 102hp MINI One, and £16.745 for a five-door. The automatic option adds £1,400.

The MINI Convertible starts at £20,705.

If you want a MINI Electric, the range starts at £27,920, with the special edition MINI Electric Collection at £36,420

What this means for you

Well, right now it means you may want to hold off on ordering that new MINI – at least until you know what your preferred specification’s going to look like, or you might be inclined to go looking for a discount on the existing model.

Take a look at how they compare:

2018 MINI vs 2021 MINI facelift, front

In the longer term, it means there’s another option for your premium car, if you want some luxurious or sporty touches without needing to get a bulky vehicle – and likewise, the entry-level MINI has cleaner emissions and more technology.

Adaptive damping and adaptive cruise control should deliver the same convenience and comfort you’d get in a car the class above; well, size above at least. You won’t save money getting a MINI instead of a Mercedes – but you’ll get something small, agile and city-friendly that’s less stressful on the motorway too.

Parkers will be among the first to drive the facelifted MINI range, so keep this page bookmarked for the latest news and views.

2021 Mini Clubman Review

cruise control mini cooper 2021

  • Excellent handling, even in the base model
  • High-quality cabin materials
  • Many customization options
  • John Cooper Works can rip to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds
  • More expensive than similarly equipped compact hatchbacks
  • John Cooper Works' exceedingly harsh ride

What's new

  • Price of base Cooper S Clubman lowered by $1,000
  • Six-speed manual transmission standard on Classic trim; optional on others
  • Signature trim includes touchscreen package with navigation and Apple CarPlay
  • Part of the second Clubman generation introduced for 2015

The Mini 2 Door Hardtop (previously just called the Mini Cooper) is the undisputed icon of the Mini lineup, but its diminutive size means it's not practical for all buyers. Thankfully, Mini offers a range of models that are more passenger- and cargo-friendly. They include the 2022 Mini Clubman, a hatchback/wagon with more room than the 4 Door Hardtop but without the lifted height and extra mass of the Countryman SUV.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2021 MINI Clubman Cooper S 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6M) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Unlike the Hardtop and Countryman — which each come with a three-cylinder engine standard — the Clubman is only available in spicy and blazin' flavors. The base Cooper S model is good for nearly 200 horsepower, while the John Cooper Works trim bumps output to over 300 hp. The result is a small car that is sporty and engaging no matter how you spec it — especially if you select the returning-for-2021 manual transmission.

Read Edmunds' Expert Rating below to see how the Mini Clubman stacks up against other hot compacts from Honda, Hyundai and Volkswagen.

Mini Cooper S 2021 Adaptive Cruise Control Default Setting

Hello, I have a Mini Cooper S 2021 with Adaptive Cruise Control. and every time I turn it on, it defaults to 4 bars. I always have to change it to 2 bars distance. Why won't it remember from last time? The Audi we just bought today has a setting to both Remember or Default to a certain distance setting. How can I do this in my MINI? Thank you.

"This value (4) is set automatically after the system is switched on" This means that the system ALWAYS sets it to 4 and so the driver now ALWAYS has to set it to the preferred value. Common sense says that if you are a driver, and you use a setting of say "2", why the heck would you ever use another setting another time the next time you drive the car? I'm just baffled that an engineer who designed this wouldn't have give a default setting or remember the last setting. Again, don't you think if someone uses 1,2, 3, or 4, they would essentially use that same setting everytime they use the feature? The OBC (Onboard Computer) - is there a hidden menu option - there has to be. I can't imagine there isn't and that no one thought it would have been a basic need. Thank you.

Hello, ICM (Integrated Chassis Management) module doesn't show up in my bimmercode app. Can you let me know how you did it? I'm using an Android phone, bimmercode version 3.7.0-7367.

Retrofit Cruise Control for a Complete Novice

cruise control mini cooper 2021

  • Add to quote

In March I took delivery of my new Mini - CLS5 F55 MINI 5-Door Hatch Cooper Classic LCI II Due to COVID, I ordered it online and before the 2021 model configuration was open. Amongst other options, I selected the Comfort Plus pack, stupidly assuming Cruise Control was still part of the Pack. Took delivery of the car and immediately noticed Cruise Control was missing. I assume most of the parts are already in the car, and they need to be activated. Please can someone post a step by step guide of how to retrofit the cruise control. I need to know what parts to buy, what to do and if there is anywhere in Scotland who can help. Thanks!!

Check with the Dealer they might be able to advise, I would guess on such a new car you may invalidate your warranty at this point with a self fit.

Hi Martin, I have checked with Mini and they say it isn't possible. I am aware of warranty and insurance issues. I wanted to find out if any experts here knew how to retrofit cruise control. Then I could get an idea on costs, etc.

Check with ndal on this site. He can probably code it. 'The expensive part is going to be retrofitting the steering wheel controls.

Select a year

  • Lows Still less athletic than most Minis, less cargo space than most rivals, ride can be bouncy.
  • Verdict Those seeking the quickest version of the quirky Countryman will want the JCW.

What's New for 2021?

Mini refreshes every 2021 Countryman with revised exterior styling and new content. There's been a subtle reshaping of its front end that includes new grille and bumper designs. Out back, the taillights now wear a Union Jack motif and sit above a revised bumper. Equally subtle are interior updates such as a new digital gauge cluster, more diverse interior materials, and the addition of Amazon Alexa to the infotainment system's list of features.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2021 Mini Countryman JCW starts at $42,350 and goes up to $49,350 depending on the trim and options.

We think the Signature trim level is the best value. It also unlocks more standard features and paint-color options than the Classic model. We'd choose the two-tone green and red paint despite it's Christmas vibe, because it’s a unique combination of classy and sporty. Every Signature comes with dual-zone climate control, forward-collision warning with automated emergency braking, heated seats, passive entry, a panoramic sunroof, and a touchscreen infotainment system. So there's not much more we'd want to add—except for the Signature Upholstery package. This includes nicer interior surfaces and lets us select the attractive black leather seats with microsuede inserts. We'd also add the rear-seat armrest, so that passengers in the back will be comfier. Finally, we'd choose the Driver Assistance package that has adaptive cruise control and a head-up display. These features make long road trips more enjoyable and help keep our eyes up when racing down a ribbon of road.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Cooper Countryman JCW is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that churns out 301 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters sends power to all four wheels. It's the quickest Mini we've ever tested , and all that grunt sounds good when trumpeted through the JCW's exhaust system. While the maximum sound level is reserved for the sportiest drive mode (Sport), the hi-po Countryman can still be soothing in Comfort mode. This subcompact crossover comes with a sport-tuned suspension that delivers controlled driving dynamics and entertaining handling, and it shines as one of the most athletic picks in its class. Still, keep in mind that this sportiest Countryman's ride quality tends to be stiffer than that of many rivals in this segment.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates that the Countryman JCW should provide 23 mpg city and 31 highway. Not bad for one of the hottest baby SUVs you can buy. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route , the Countryman JCW delivered 32 mpg.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Cooper Countryman JCW offers a cabin with cheerful design elements and premium materials. The display screen that sits above the center stack is framed in a circular housing, and this helps add unique flair bordering on whimsy to the car's interior. Despite its diminutive footprint, the Countryman JCW offers reasonably spacious accommodations for passengers, and there is good legroom for those seated in both rows. However, cargo room is less generous. The Cooper Countryman JCW provides 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place. The rival Hyundai Kona has 19.2 cubic feet of space, and the Toyota C-HR has 19.1. Mini's small crossover SUV provides 47.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Mini has equipped the Cooper Countryman JCW with standard tech equipment such as a six-speaker audio system and an auxiliary input jack. Also, all models come with Bluetooth for hands-free calls and music streaming. You can upgrade with available features such as a Harman/Kardon audio system and a 8.8-inch touchscreen. The options list also includes navigation, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, and wireless device charging. Android Auto isn't available.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2021 Mini Cooper Countryman JCW hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Mini has equipped the JCW with useful driver-assistance features , but blind-spot monitoring is noticeably absent. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mini provides respectable warranty coverage, with three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance. With rival brands such as Fiat , complimentary scheduled maintenance isn't offered.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles

10 most popular cars in Russia (PHOTOS)

cruise control mini cooper 2021

In Russia, every third resident has their own vehicle. At the beginning of 2021, 45 million passenger cars were registered in the country. Almost a third of these are made by the Russian car company LADA. Toyota is currently the second most popular brand, with over four million cars in the country— the RAV4 and Camry are the most popular models. Next come Hyundai and Kia with over two million cars each in the country.

cruise control mini cooper 2021

Compared with the United States and most of Europe, where around two out of three residents have their own vehicle, the car market in Russia is still relatively open and continues to develop. Russia imposes rather large customs duties on imported cars in order to force international car companies to produce their vehicles inside the country. As a result, many foreign car manufactures have localized their production in Russia and in some cases even modified their car models to accommodate Russian road conditions and people's tastes.

Russians prefer low-budget crossovers and sedans. Hatchbacks and station wagons are less common, and small electric cars are generally an unusual sight (there are just 11,000 electric cars in the country, and 9,000 of them are the Nissan Leaf).

"Russians are not interested in hatchbacks because of the lack of association with a high position in society," says Alexey Kozhukhov, an automotive marketing expert. He notes that in the Soviet period, a long Volga sedan was considered a high-class car and a symbol of power, and that these associations have been passed on to subsequent generations.

Manufacturers have created economy-class sedans and SUVs that are specifically catered to the Russian market. According to the Association of European Businesses , in the first half of 2021 around 45% of new cars sold were crossovers.

Best selling cars in Russia in 2021

1. lada granta.

cruise control mini cooper 2021

The simplest and cheapest car on the Russian market, the Granta is assembled at the AvtoVAZ plant in Togliatti. Some typical customer reviews state that the car is “reliable and without problems” or that “I didn’t have big illusions and got what I expected.” A sedan without air conditioning costs 560,000 rubles ($7,800), and the LUXE version with a heated windshield, cruise control and an automatic transmission costs 780,000 rubles ($11,000).

2. Lada Vesta

cruise control mini cooper 2021

Lada’s latest model, the Vesta, is designed to be a sedan and crossover, although there is also a sports version. The car meets most consumers’ needs but is cheaper than foreign brands. “When I bought it, I understood that it was AvtoVAZ and there might be problems ahead, but the desire to buy this beauty simply prevailed, and I only wanted a new car in this budget,” one Russian driver writes , adding that he didn’t want to buy a used car.

The simplest model with a manual transmission, air conditioning and airbags sells for 795,000 rubles ($11,200), while the most expensive “Sport” version costs 1.2 million rubles ($17,000).

3. Hyundai Creta

cruise control mini cooper 2021

This crossover is one of the most inexpensive cars in its class in Russia. Its price ranges from 1.2 million rubles ($17,000) to about 2 million rubles for the top version ($28,000). “Many Creta owners with a 1.6-liter engine complain about the sluggish dynamics. I wasn't looking for a racing car, so the car is fine for me. My priority was AWD, which fully justified itself. Now I can go to nature any time and not worry about getting stuck on a dirt road,” writes one driver from the Urals.

Hyundai also was also the first car manufacturer in Russia to offer online sales directly from the factory without the dealer.

4. Hyundai Solaris

cruise control mini cooper 2021

The Solaris is a version of the Accent that was localized specifically for Russia in 2010 and is produced in St. Petersburg. Russian drivers seem quite satisfied with the model, which is a budget sedan that is resistant to temperature changes and harsh weather conditions and is generally reliable. “I wanted to use it for at least five years without looking under the hood,” wrote one driver about why he chose this model.

The Solaris ranges in price from 890,000 rubles ($12,500) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300) for the top configuration.

5. KIA Rio

cruise control mini cooper 2021

The KIA Rio has also been produced in St. Petersburg since 2011, and, like the Solaris, only comes in a sedan model, which is more popular among local customers. The design and technical characteristics of the Russian Rio are slightly different from versions sold in other countries. Many drivers note that it has good heating and the ability to start at minus 30 Celsius. As a result, the car has become one of the best-selling models in the country. It ranges in cost from 950,000 ($13,400) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300)

6. Volkswagen Polo

cruise control mini cooper 2021

All Polo models sold in Europe are hatchbacks, but in Russia Volkswagen opted to modify this legendary model to produce what has become one of the most popular sedans in Russia. “The car is a car. The trunk is huge and comfortable. There is quite a lot of space in the cabin, both in front and behind. The driving is not bad, better than other cars of this class,” writes one owner.

The Polo Sedan is assembled at a factory in Kaluga (about 200 km from Moscow). The cheapest model costs 1 million ($14,100), while the most expensive version goes for 1.9 mln rubles ($26,800).

7. Lada Niva

cruise control mini cooper 2021

The first Soviet SUV is still in production and has a loyal customer base for its combination of being extremely cheap and strong for off-road driving. Many Russians use it to get to their remote dachas.

The simplest version costs 660,000 rubles ($9,300). The most expensive version is called the Niva Travel (formerly the Chevrolet Niva), costs 993,000 rubles ($14,000) and is equipped with a snorkel in case the car is overtaken by water in severe road conditions. And there is no automatic transmission! “Its passion is dirt roads, super suspension, it ‘swallows’ holes in the roads, you don't notice irregularities,” wrote a driver from the Amur Region in the Far East. However, customers note that the interior is not particularly comfortable and that the car consumes a lot of fuel.

8. Škoda Rapid PA II

cruise control mini cooper 2021

This is another economy class sedan that has won the hearts of many Russian drivers. “The new Rapid is comfortable to drive, there is a lot of automation,” says one owner from St. Petersburg. They go on to write : “Turn the steering wheel and hit the gas, and switch on cruise control on a high-way, and the car will do everything else by itself.”

The Škoda Rapid is assembled at a plant in Kaluga. The simplest version costs 990,000 rubles ($14,000) and already includes a media system with a touch screen and Bluetooth. The most expensive version costs 1.4 million rubles ($19,700).

9. Renault Duster

cruise control mini cooper 2021

Renault cars are assembled in Moscow. For a long time, the most popular Renault model was the Logan sedan, but this year the Duster SUV took that title. "Who can imagine a life that is no longer just being in a hurry," one driver jokes about driving the car. "The Duster is a family car. The car is enough to cheerfully stay in traffic" writes another.

The price of the simplest model with a manual transmission starts at 1 million rubles ($14,300), while the most expensive 4x4 version is twice as much.

10. Lada Largus VP

cruise control mini cooper 2021

The only wagon model in this list is also produced by the Russian company AvtoVAZ. Largus is a fairly budget car that is popular not only among dacha enthusiasts, but also for commercial purposes. “The main plus is the suspension and stability on the road,” writes a driver from Tyumen (Siberia), “No need to worry about driving the highway on Largus in winter.” All versions are equipped with a manual transmission and cost from 780,000 ($11,000) to 978,000 rubles ($13,700).
