Helping Build Memories For A Lifetime!

Cruise Photography Tips: How to Take Stunning Photos on Your Next Cruise

Smartphone Taking Pictures

Capturing beautiful photos on a cruise ship is a wonderful way to preserve memories and document your journey. With a little know-how and creativity, you can take stunning photos that will transport you back to the joy and adventure of your cruise. In this blog, I will be sharing with you some simple cruise photography tips to elevate your skills while onboard.

Moreover, before you can take amazing photos on a cruise ship, you’ll need some basic photography equipment.

What camera equipment should I bring on a cruise ship?

photography equipment

Choosing the right camera equipment for your cruise depends on your personal preferences, photography experience, and desired outcome. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

For Casual, High-Quality Photos:

  • Smartphone: The majority of contemporary smartphones come equipped with superb cameras that can produce high-quality images and videos in optimal lighting situations. They’re easily accessible, small, and practical. Keep in mind a waterproof case for trips to the beach.
  • Point-and-shoot cameras: These are useful for taking pictures of faraway details or expansive landscapes. They can do this very well because they have more control over zoom than smartphones. Usually, they are small and simple to operate.

For More Control and Flexibility:

  • Mirrorless Camera with Interchangeable Lenses: Compared to smartphones and tiny cameras, these provide better image quality and have interchangeable lenses (telephoto for zoom, wide-angle for landscapes). A versatile zoom lens (such the 18-105mm) should be considered to cover most situations.
  • DSLR Camera: DSLRs offer the best control and image quality for amateurs and pros alike. They weigh more and are bulkier than mirrorless cameras, though.

Additional Considerations:

  • Memory Cards: Pack enough memory cards with ample storage (32GB or higher) to avoid running out, especially if shooting RAW images.
  • Spare Battery: Having a spare battery ensures you don’t miss capturing key moments.
  • Waterproof Case: Protect your camera from splashes and sand during shore excursions.
  • Tripod: Can be helpful for low-light situations, landscapes, or long exposure photography, but might be cumbersome on excursions.
  • Filters: Neutral density filters help control light in bright situations, while circular polarizers reduce glare and enhance colors.
  • Weight and mobility: Cruise packing space can be limited, so consider the weight and size of your equipment.
  • Learning curve: If you’re new to photography, opt for simpler options like smartphones or point-and-shoots.
  • Cruise policies: Check if there are restrictions on bringing drones or professional camera equipment onboard.
  • Ultimately, the best camera equipment is the one you’ll use comfortably and enjoy having with you. Focus on capturing memories and having fun, and the photos will follow!

How To Get the Best Shot :

Selective Focus Photography of Woman Holding Dslr Camera

1. Explore Different Angles

You will be able to up your cruise photography game by trying out some novel viewpoints and angles. Explore different viewpoint positions to add some variation to your photographs rather than sticking to the same old ones. For amazing aerial views, ascend to the top deck; alternatively, get down to the water’s edge for a different viewpoint.

Try taking pictures from the side, above, or even below to get different perspectives of the ship and its environs. Don’t be afraid to experiment with angles. You may give your pictures more depth and excitement by using diversity, which will show off the ship’s and its surroundings’ stunning features. In a completely new way.

2. Use Natural Light

You can take amazing pictures by utilizing as much natural light as possible while on your trip! The golden hour is a lovely moment that should not be missed, whether you’re lounging on deck or visiting a new port. It’s like nature’s own Instagram filter! Everything has a dreamy, luminous quality when the light is gentle and warm. Right after sunrise and right before sunset.

This is the ideal opportunity to get some really amazing pictures that will make your buddies envious. So, If you have the opportunity take advantage of the golden light, as you grab your camera. I promise that these photos taken during golden hour will be the most memorable from your cruise album.

3. Focus on Details

The devil is in the details when it comes to cruise photography as well as the large picture! Although the wide-angle photos of the ship and surroundings are breathtaking, don’t forget to zoom in and take pictures of the minor details that add character to your voyage. Look for unique textures, such as the old wood of the ship’s deck or the elaborate patterns found in the lounge’s upholstery.

Whether it’s the vivid colors of the tropical flowers on deck or the striking graffiti art in port, keep an eye out for splashes of color. Additionally, don’t miss the interesting architectural features and landmarks you come across—they’re like undiscovered jewels just waiting to be found! The next time you take pictures on your trip, don’t forget to enlarge them and see the beauty in the tiny things—after all, it’s the little things that count most.

4. Capture Candid Moments

It’s true what they say: the most memorable experiences are the ones you didn’t anticipate! That’s why it’s so important to carry a camera with you on your vacation. You never know when those unplanned bursts of unbridled happiness, laughing, and connection may occur, but believe me when I say that you will want to record each and every one of them!

These unguarded moments, like a passionate chat with a fellow traveler over dinner or a hilarious game of shuffleboard on deck, are what really make your cruise experience unforgettable. Therefore, don’t be afraid to grab your camera anytime you sense something magical happening. These genuine, unplanned moments will bring back the biggest smiles as you look back on your cruise images.

5. Experiment with Composition

Are you prepared to capture “wow” moments in your cruise photos? It all comes down to learning some awesome compositional tricks! Have you ever heard of the thirds rule? It’s revolutionary. Imagine dividing your shot into nine equal sections using two lines, one vertical and one horizontal. After there, position your main subject at the intersections or along those lines to immediately add more dynamic elements to your photo!

Remember that leading lines can help a picture feel more interesting by drawing your eye into it. And framing, too? At that point, you frame your subject and add depth by using shot components like an archway or window. So feel free to experiment with these tips and find what suits each scene and subject the best. Your cruise images will become so much more visually appealing, you won’t believe it!

6. Include People in Your Photos

Including people in your cruise photos can greatly improve the richness and storytelling of your pictures. Whether you’re taking pictures of fellow travelers participating in shipboard activities or residents in port towns, having people in your shots gives them a much-needed depth.

Incorporating people into your photographs not only gives them a feeling of scale and context, but it also gives them a narrative element that draws viewers in. And encourages them to become part of the action. Every picture opens up to reveal the colorful tapestry of life in the ports of call or on board the ship.

The next time you’re taking pictures while on a cruise, think about including people in your composition. Interact with locals and other passengers, and take advantage of the chance to record unscripted moments that truly capture the spirit of your cruise experience. These people-focused photos will definitely be treasured keepsakes that capture the special moments and relationships you made during your journey.

7. Don’t let space confine you

Don’t feel limited to taking pictures from the inside of your stateroom when it comes to preserving those special cruise ship moments. Set yourself free and go exploring! Go outside, explore those obscure places, and use your imagination when it comes to angles. Don’t be afraid to experiment with other angles, such as from a shady nook on the ship’s promenade or the upper deck with a view of the ocean. Cruise ships offer a multitude of levels and viewpoints from both indoor and outdoor spaces. This makes them akin to floating mazes. Thus, make the most of it and let your sense of adventure to lead you to fresh viewpoints.

When you have the courage to walk and explore, you’ll be astounded by the diversity of shots you can get. Who knows, you might find the ideal location for that picture perfect Instagram post or uncover a completely new aspect that gives your cruise album a thrilling new twist. So when next you catch a cruise, go outside your stateroom and enjoy taking pictures of the ship. As if it were a playground!

8. Prove you’re on a cruise ship

The key to recording your cruise experience is to catch those iconic moments that declare, “I’m on a ship!” Therefore, don’t content yourself with generic photos; instead, include details that clearly indicate where you are. Consider it as an addition to your pictures, a tiny remembrance of your amazing adventure.

Take note of the ship’s unique characteristics first. These images immediately take you back to the most exciting part of your sailing journey. Whether it’s the majestic bow slicing through the seas, the bustling pool deck full of swimmers and sunbathers, or a close-up of the ship’s name proudly displayed on her hull.

Don’t stop there, though! Go beyond the obvious in search of unusual viewpoints and undiscovered treasures. It could be the expansive vistas from the upper deck or the quaint elements hidden away in the intimate alcoves. Whatever it is, understand that every position presents a fresh chance to capture the spirit of your vacation. By adding these details to your images, you give the viewer a feeling of the location and context. While also producing a visual narrative that tells the tale of your journey in vivid detail. I hope on your next cruise you will seize your camera and get set to go on a photo expedition. An expedition that will help you remember your cruise experience for years to come.

9. Maintain Stability

Don’t allow grainy pictures ruin your cruise memories when it comes to taking pictures at night! Your images will appreciate you later if you have a tripod or find a sturdy surface to rest your camera on. A steady hand is essential to getting those clean, crisp photos. Whether you’re trying to catch the captivating stars in the night sky or the ship’s glittering lights.

And here’s a small pro tip: experiment with your shutter speed if you’re shooting in low light, such as those enchanted evenings at sea. When trying to capture the soft glow of the ship’s lights or the dazzle of the stars above, a slower shutter speed can really help. Simply make sure to maintain a steady camera to prevent any undesired blurriness.

Thus, the next time you’re out and about after dark with your camera, don’t forget to stabilize that shot and let the magic to happen. You will be astounded by the breathtaking evening pictures you may take on your cruise vacation with a little perseverance and the appropriate gear.

10. Get creative with your gear

Why restrict yourself to using only your smartphone to record those priceless moments during your cruise? This is the ideal moment to pull out your reliable digital camera from your suitcase and give it some love! Try experimenting with different lenses and settings; the options are unlimited. For example, you can take wide-angle pictures to show off the ship’s grandeur, zoom in for breathtaking close-ups of the sunset, or combine panoramic views of the ocean horizon.

The fact remains, though: equipment is not everything. In the end, what matters most is your vision and originality, even though having a sophisticated camera can assist. Therefore, don’t worry about owning the newest and best gear; instead, concentrate on catching the moments that resonate with you and convey your distinct cruise tale. The most crucial thing is to allow your creativity flow and capture the enchantment of your cruise journey in a unique way, whether you’re using a digital camera or a smartphone.

11. Capture the Unexpected

Every moment spent cruising is an adventure waiting to happen, so be on the lookout for those hidden jewels that make for the most amazing pictures! These are the moments that transform an average photo into a treasured memory. Whether it’s the sky lighting up in a blaze of hues during a magnificent sunset, a joyful pod of dolphins performing alongside the ship, or discovering a chance meeting with a local sharing their culture.

The key, though, is to always be prepared to act quickly! Have your smartphone or camera handy, ready to go, with the shutter release button pressed and settings selected. These ephemeral moments pass by quickly, so you won’t want to miss the opportunity to record them in all their splendor.

So, enjoy the spontaneity of your cruise experience and enlist the help of your camera for a trip full of unanticipated discoveries and moments that are just asking to be snapped. When you take advantage of the chance to photograph these ephemeral moments of paradise, who knows what wonderful memories you’ll carry back with you!

12. Experiment with Editing

The magic happens when you edit your cruise images, much like when you put the final touches on a masterpiece! In order to take your images to the next level, don’t be afraid to embrace your inner artist and experiment with editing techniques. There are many of tools available to you to improve your photos, regardless of your level of experience with sophisticated editing software or smartphone photography.

To bring out the real beauty of your images, start with small modifications to exposure, contrast, and color. Make sure your subject is front and center and that the background enhances rather than detracts from it by experimenting with composition. Remember to crop your photos as well. Sometimes a little adjustment can have a major impact on how your image looks and feels overall.

The best thing is that editing is all about expressing yourself, so don’t be scared to use your imagination and make your images wholly unique. The options are unlimited, whether you want to go for a subtle, dreamy vibe or a bright, vibrant design. So grab those editing tools and start bringing those cruise memories to life in breathtaking detail!

Realize it takes effort. Great photos require patience and persistence. Keep your camera handy and be ready to shoot when interesting moments arise. Sometimes the best shots happen spontaneously, so stay alert

Also, remember that this is your cruise. Instead of snapping the same shots everyone else is fighting for, focus on moments that reflect your unique experience. Capture the cabin steward delivering your early-morning coffee or highlight the bowl of fruit or Champagne with glasses you receive as a past passenger. These small details will make your photo collection more exciting and personal.

Yay! You’re going on a cruise. You’ve packed your clothes and camera and now what? You need a plan – a plan for taking better pictures.

That’s right, no more boring slideshows or photo albums for you. This time it’s going to be different. How is that, you say? You’re going to discover the top 10 ways to capture great cruise photos, just by checking out the following tips:

Tell a story

Pick a location and then capture a wide shot, a medium shot, and a close-up shot. When you place these images together they provide more information about your experience and visually capture the viewer's attention.

Tell a story with a photo triptych.

Fill it with flash

Are all your subjects in the dark? If you’re shooting in Automatic Flash and posing your subject with their back toward the light, it may result in a silhouette. If that’s the result you want, great! Otherwise, you can fix this exposure problem by using your camera’s Forced Flash setting to fill in the shadows and avoid a silhouette. Almost every digital camera has a setting for this, often marked by a lone lightning bolt (see the example below). Look for the Forced Flash option in your camera's settings or menu function.

Fill flash.

Stay in the shade

Avoid the harsh light of the midday sun by placing people in a shaded area near direct sunlight — for example, an open doorway or under the shade of a building or tree.

Avoid harsh midday sunlight by positioning subjects in shaded areas.

Move the horizon

The rule of thirds can help you create more compelling photographs. Envision a tic-tac-toe board on your viewfinder and move your horizon line to the lower third or upper third of the frame.

Use the classic rule of thirds so that the horizon takes up a third of the frame.

Frame the shot

Use a framing element to give your image context, depth, and lead the viewer’s eye toward your main focal point. A tree branch, doorways, archways, windows – any open shape that surrounds your subject in the foreground of your scene will work.

Frame your shot to add visual interest to your subjects.

Look for the light

Be observant of the light and how it falls upon the objects in your scene. I ordered room service early one morning and noticed the sunlight softly gleaming through the windows and onto my coffee pot. It made for a quiet moment captured before a busy day at sea.

Morning coffee, captured in the softly filtered light of daybreak.

Use side light to create dimension

Plan a photo shoot in the early morning or late afternoon because the sun is low in the sky and creates dimension and form across the landscape, people, or objects in your scene.

Early morning or late afternoon makes an ideal time to start snapping.

Read the signs

Remember your location and capture the essence of a place by photographing interesting locations, local people, architectural details, and signs.

Add local color to your photographs.

Get creative with color

Have some fun and look for colorful doors and walls to create a little extra zing in your photos. Complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel. When placed next to each other they create a strong contrast and visual interest.

See a splash of color during your wanderings? Dive in!

Play with scale

Objects closer to camera appear larger than objects farther away. Introduce a little whimsy into your images by playing with the size of people, places, and objects in your images.

Experiment with the size of objects in your frame.

I hope these tips inspire you to capture your own vacation experience in a creative way. Now it’s your turn! Do you have any photos or photo tips you're fond of? I'd love to know!

Tips for Taking Amazing Photos on a Cruise

By Me Ra Koh

My husband and I have the best job! We produce a travel show with our kids and teach photography workshops around the world . Our most recent workshop was for a group of sixty plus top mom bloggers on the Caribbean’s largest cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas. With all levels of photography, we captured inspiring imagery. Whether you have a smartphone or DSLR, here are 10 photos you must take a cruise.

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Boat Ship and Cruise Ship

It’s a Ship, Not a Boat.

It became a running joke among our group whenever one of us referred to this massive ship as a boat. The intimidating size of a cruise ship is worth capturing. Consider taking this photo when you exit the ship in the early morning for an excursion to take advantage of the beautiful morning light. Or wait until the late afternoon when you return for a golden light like I did for this photo. I purposely included the smaller ship to the far left because it gives scale to how large our cruise was.

Watch for Cloud Shadows in Landscape

There will be a handful of opportunities to get up high and shoot down on the beautiful landscapes, whether it’s from the upper deck of the cruise or a viewpoint on your excursion. Watch for clouds that cast shadows over the land. The shadows help add more depth and emotion to the overall landscape. You can see how Pint Size Baker did a wonderful job of capturing all the different dimensions of light.

Detail Detective

Not only do you want to take the super wide angle photo of beautiful landscapes, but you also want to be a Detail Detective. What are details that make your cruise experience unique? Hanging from the ceiling of our group’s dining room entrance were bright colored Chinese lanterns. My husband used a Lensbaby to get this special kind of result straight out of the camera.

Food Idea 1: Shoot Straight Down

Food is a big part of the cruise experience, whether you enjoy the local flavors or the endless options on board. There are so many fun ways to photograph your food journey, I must include three. First, you can shoot down on the food like Nicole from Wonky Wonderful did. Just stand up over your food with a smartphone or DSLR and shoot straight down. She also used a great app called Studio Design to add text to her image.

Food Idea 2: Capture the Action

You can also capture the action of food being prepped for you. Alyssa from Simply Quinoa did a wonderful job of capturing the motion of the guacamole being made at our tableside. Experiment with a slow shutter speed to capture motion like this.

Image may contain Plant Fruit Food and Avocado

Food Idea 3: Get in Super Close

One of my favorite ways to photograph food is to get in super close with the camera. I love how Jamie from Totally the Bomb not only got in close, but she also off centered the bowl of avocado. Seeing a subject in part can add interest to a photo’s story.

The Staff’s Story

Our group was so impressed with the staff’s attention to every detail. The staff went the extra mile to make our cruise experience amazing. You can’t help but want a photo of them! You could have your favorite staff members look at the camera and smile (but that’s what everyone does). Why not do something different? What about capturing a story of who they are and what they do. I love how Carina of The Jet Set captured the waiters as they were getting the run down on the evening’s dinner menu. Changing it to black and white was a great choice because of the contrast in their black and white uniforms, and it drew our attention to the waiter’s face that much more.

Color Groupings

While doing your excursions, look for color groupings to photograph. My eye was drawn to the pretty blue and white combination in this gelato stand. Maybe your eye is captured by the line of red umbrellas along the beach or the blue towels rolled up in perfect order poolside. Give yourself a fun creative exercise for the day by looking for color groupings. You’ll be surprised at how much you find.

The Journey Photo

Look for ways to capture a moment that says “journey.” It can be a photo of your feet standing on the sand. Or it can be a moment like this. I love how Molly of Mommy Coddle has her subject in the far right side of the frame and fills the middle and left side with the turquoise ocean waters. Just the simple composition choice to off center your subject will help convey a sense of “journey” in your photo.

Regardless of the cruise line sailed, the places visited along the way or who is sailing with us, we want to capture the moment with  photos . We might do that with the camera in our smartphone , use an easy point-and-shoot camera or  invest in professional-quality equipment. However we go about it, what counts are the cruise photos we end up with and will share with friends and family or just keep for our own amusement.

On The Way To Juneau - 100

Focusing our attention first on some basic image-capturing guidelines then on the subject can make all the difference in the world.

Cruise Compete

  • Take Two Shots of everything to be sure you have captured what you intended. Holding down the shutter just a little longer gets the second photo which can also be sharper because your finger is not moving.
  • Back It Up. Have a way to back up photos, either by syncing a smartphone with a laptop, copying them on to an external drive or, if the at-sea Internet situation allows; sending up to a cloud-sourced backup supply. Using multiple memory cards can also be helpful here.
  • Be Aware Of The Sun and where it is located. In most cases, your best bet is to have the sun at your back, shining on the subject. Still, don’t be afraid of the sun either. Some of the most amazing photos can be had at sunrise and sunset, a golden time at sea as on land.
  • Learn How To Edit your photos using built-in programs and downloadable apps for your smartphone and software for your camera. Practice this before going to sea so you get past the learning curve and have a working knowledge of how to manipulate/fix images while sailing.
  • The Rule of Thirds is a basic composition rule that photographers use, dividing a picture into thirds, horizontally and vertically. Placing important parts of the picture on the lines or at the intersections will make your photo more interesting than a catalog view, centered photo.
  • Consult An Expert, On Board-  Applying all of the above can improve your photo skills in a hurry. To go further, consider onboard programs that might help teach passengers how to get the most out of their camera, hosted by the ship’sphotographers. Consider the source: those people are at sea all the time; its their job to take good photos. Why not take advantage of their knowledge?
  • Get Your Eyes Checked- This seems so simple but can make a huge difference in photos.  If what we see through the camera viewfinder is out of focus, what we see in the photo most likely will be also.  Duh.  Many thanks to Cruise Critic editor-in-chief Carolyn Spencer Brown for pointing that out a few events ago…which leads to the next tip
  • Be Honest When Asked Your Opinion about the photos of others, especially if the person taking the photos is serious about it.  Don’t hold back your comments and you might very well help that person bring home some stunning images.
  • Use Camera Pre-Sets when available is a tip Whitney has been telling me for quite some time.  After using the Autumn Colors setting on my camera for our Fall Foliage cruise with Crystal Cruises , I’m sold.

Leading travel influencers reveal how to capture photos & videos on a cruise vacation

Cruise photos and videos are what will help you look back and remember your treasured holidays and they can make your social media feed look on fire. Here’s how to nail our content on cruises according to the experts.

Words by Momtaz Begum-Hossain

Taking photos and videos on holiday is a big part of a getaway for many travellers, but if you’re an amateur it can be tricky to perfect the optimum footage.

To help you out, we asked five leading travel influencers and content creators to share their best cruise photo ideas and how to nail ‘the shot.’

From tips on taking delectable food photography to filming a jaw-dropping sunset timelapse, here’s how to create social-share-worthy content.

Anouska_Probyn-on_Star-Clippers-

How to deal with weather conditions

Whether you’re embarking on a sun-soaked cruise of the Caribbean or sailing through winter wonderlands to see the Northern Lights , some of the best cruise photo ideas rely on weather conditions.

Digital Content Creator Anouska Probyn (above left and main image, credit: Florence Bassa) has to consider the weather on a daily basis whether she’s jet-setting around the globe or shooting in her hometown of London. Here are her tricks of the trade.

Hone your weather forecasting skills

Weather forecasting apps are a travel content creator’s best friend allowing them to schedule shooting in prime conditions. Anousha reveals: “I rely a lot on weather conditions and natural light to shoot, so I’ll usually check the forecast in advance. If it’s going to rain I’ll either aim to shoot on better-looking days or plan alternative indoor locations.”

But don’t write off drizzle; “if the rain isn’t too heavy I try and shoot. Depending on the location, a gloomy, rainy day can add to the ambience. However, if it’s really chucking it down, I’d rather not risk making myself ill and damaging my equipment – it’s simply not worth it.”

How to take photos in the sun

Brilliant sun over bright blue seas may look picture-perfect but what your eye sees and what the lens captures can be very different as Anoushka explains: “Sunshine can make or break a photo. If you know how to shoot in it, it can add depth to a photo but it can also cause ghastly shadows and overly contrasted shots.”

We’ve all been there and had shadows getting in the way, so how can you overcome them? Anoushka says: “My rule with bright sunshine is either to shoot with the subject directly facing the sun or being backlit by it.”

It’s also worth factoring in the time of day: “I try to shoot at sunrise, golden hour, or sunset, as they’re the best times for beautiful light. I’d also recommend shooting on a camera in RAW format, as there’s more scope to adjust over or under-exposed elements of your photos using editing apps.”

Breeze into it

You can’t escape winds on a cruise but they don’t need to hamper your photography plans. Plan in advance with your wardrobe, Anouska admits: “Windy conditions can be tough. On my most recent cruise, I prepared by packing a wardrobe of slim-fit clothing such as jumpsuits and trousers that wouldn’t be affected by the wind. I’ll also tie up my hair, or work a headscarf or hat into the look.”

Wind can also enhance the artistry of a shot. “Sometimes the wind can even work in your favour, as it adds a sense of motion to a photograph. But it’s a matter of patience – you just need one second when the wind dies down to get the shot.”

Shooting-Food_2foodtrippers

How to take photos of food

Food is one of the highlights of a cruise and when you’re not moored up exploring the sights, you’ll be aboard travelling the world through cuisine . Food photography is a passion of bloggers Daryl and Mindi Hirsch (otherwise known as 2foodtrippers ) and they’re well-versed in photographing what they eat (above left).

How to photograph a breakfast buffet

Buffets in particular can be problematic but it’s still possible to capture the perfect breakfast. Daryl says: “Typically, we just shoot the parts of the buffet that we find most attractive with either a DSLR camera or a high-quality phone camera that shoots fairly wide and gets consistent results in low light.”

Rather than trying to shoot the entire set-up curate your own feast. Daryl adds: “Sometimes we create a pretty plate to shoot in natural light at our table.” Reach for fresh fruits to add colour, pile up a platter of pastries and add fresh juice and coffee for breakfast perfection.

How to photograph food in a dark restaurant

If you’re opting for an à la carte menu in the evenings this is where you’ll be served some of the most attractive dishes of your cruise, but you’ll also be faced with tricky conditions.

Mindi advises: “In dark restaurants, it’s virtually impossible to get good food photos without some light to assist. We recommend travelling with a small continuous video light which can be purchased at a good camera store or online. A ring light on a phone would also deliver a positive effect though not as much.”

Food photography etiquette

Capturing cuisine is satisfying but not at the expense of upsetting fellow diners, so always be mindful. Daryl says: “We typically avoid food photography while dining out with friends. Not only does our photography interrupt their dining experience, but their desire to ‘tuck in straight away’ interferes with our creative process. The same goes for video.

“However, we don’t always have this option when we’re travelling. If this is the case, we let our dining partners know our shooting plans in advance and move as quickly as possible. But, in all honesty, we prefer to do our food photography and video without other people at the table.”

Kach Umandap swimming pool

How to photograph a swimming pool

Swimming pools on cruise ships provide the opportunity to take drool-worthy shots that will have the likes pinging in. There are no rules on how much of yourself to show in a pool shot but in years to come when you’re reflecting on your travel memories pool snaps will make you smile, which travel blogger Kach Umandap (above left), who promotes body positivity, advocates.

Enjoy the moment

“Remember that others see you in a more positive light than you do yourself so this should instantly give you a confidence boost,” explains Each.

“Focus on the experience – fun times in the pool or wearing a new swimsuit you absolutely love – more than the people around you. Shift your mindset to the positive things and you’ll feel more comfortable and excited to share images highlighting that particular time.”

Pool perfect

First, shoot the pool without you in shot. Kach says: “Show the pool at a slight angle but in parallel with the skyline. Show a bit of the water but break up the image with a cool supporting background. If there are any special features like fountains you can use those as the focal points.”

For compositions, a shot where you’re partially in the water is a great way to frame yourself and the background. Kach enthuses: “A standing side angle and shots of the upper body can be extremely flattering, all taken while these parts are out of the water.

“Use the pool as a backdrop rather than focusing on the water or reflections as these make everything appear so much larger than they are – body proportions included.”

Invest in the tech

Underwater cameras can revolutionise your experience of being in the water so if you have mermaid tendencies and are keen to take pool and beach shots during your holidays it’s worth investing in one.

Kach says: “They give you the freedom to play around, splash and get images that feel natural and capture your character.”

Madeira coast

How to use a drone for cruise content

Sweeping cinematic drone shots have swept across social media in people’s travel videos and there’s no denying that they elevate your content. If you’re new to being a drone pilot practice before you go on holiday until you feel confident enough to take it with you.

And when you do fly it, stick to stop-offs on land and leave on-vessel attempts to the professionals like content creator and videographer Josh Nueva (footage shown above left) – drones are expensive kit and you don’t want to lose them on their first international flight.

He explains: “Drones are all very similar to fly so when you buy the most basic one to start with, your experience flying that drone will carry over to the more expensive ones.”

Not sure where to start? Josh recommends drones by DJI (above right) which come at different price points: Mavic Mini 3 Pro, Mavic Air 2S, Mavic Air 2, Mavic Mini 2 and Mavic 2 Pro.

The best conditions to fly a drone

Weather is a key consideration when it comes to flying drones as Josh advises: “Aim for when it’s sunny with a little bit of cloud and little to no wind, that way you can get stable photos and videos that are in focus, as well as the perfect lighting with the sun which is softened by some cloud.

“It really depends on what type of photo you’re looking for but for the most part if it’s a calm day with some sun you won’t struggle to get a great image.”

And take his advice when it comes to wet conditions, rain is a no-no: “I would never recommend flying your drone when it’s raining, windy or has the potential for rain. If water gets inside your drone, particularly in the motors it will short-circuit.

“When it’s windy, your drone will struggle to fly back to you and it’s an all-round scary experience. Over time you’ll understand how much wind your drone will be able to withstand but that comes with more flying time and experience.”

Using a drone to take selfies

A classic shot to take using a drone is an aerial shot of you in a gorgeous location and the beach or sunbathing on deck is the perfect place to try it. Josh says: “Drones these days are amazing and so advanced, there are many modes to choose from that can automate certain movements – you can achieve some incredible selfies or shots of yourself.”

To try an aerial shot, simply lie down, have the drone above you and then allow it to move up and way until you become a tiny dot on what looks like a deserted tropical island.

Using your drone footage

Some discipline is required. Josh admits: “When you’ve got your footage, it’s very easy to share everything! I struggled with that at the start. Take a step back from what you’ve captured and share bits that you love. This way, you combine your personality while showcasing your incredible footage.”

It’s ok to be ruthless; “when it comes to editing, taking something away from a video is almost more important than adding to it, less is more.”

Josh is known for his incredible shots of wildlife and regularly shares jaw-dropping footage of whales and dolphins in the wild on his Instagram, but this is an advanced technique best left to the professionals as Josh explains: “You have so many factors you need to be able to control simultaneously. You need communication with whoever’s driving the boat to slow down or stop when you need to take off or land and you need to be able to fly the drone without looking at it.”

“You also have to remember that these are wild animals and the ocean is their home, so tracking their movements slowly is going to require a lot of patience and understanding, you won’t get it right all the time but the more you watch them the more their movements start to make sense, especially if they’re feeding together, if they’re swimming along or if they’re just having fun and surfing a wave.”

“All of these factors are things you will accumulate over time with hundreds of flights – eventually the drone will become a part of you just like riding a bicycle or skateboarding.”

sunset

How to take the perfect sunset time-lapse

Slow-moving clouds, extraordinary colours, jaw-dropping views – cruises allow you to experience exquisite, uninterrupted skies.

The best way to capture them is with a time-lapse. If you’re using a mobile phone it may come with a time-lapse function or if you have a camera you can shoot at intervals and then combine images to create a video of either the sun rising from the horizon, or setting for the day.

Travel and timelapse photographer Michael Thomas has shot timelapses all over the world and these are his tips for getting started.

Check the cloud cover

A terrific timelapse needs clouds, but not too many of them. Before you set up to do a timelapse decide if it’s worth it by checking the cloud cover. Michael explains: “If the weather is 100 percent cloud coverage there are not good conditions for a timelapse. If cloud coverage is below 50 percent there’s a big chance that a sunrise or sunset will be spectacular.”

Most photographers use apps to help them decide if it’s worth the effort of setting up their tripod for a timelapse. Michael recommends Skyfire which predicts the light levels of sunrises and sunsets. He says: “Skyfire is really good for predicting beautiful pink skies for colourful landscape shots.”

Time-lapses benefit from planning, as well as researching cloud coverage and finding a backdrop you want to shoot in before you try and attempt it. Otherwise, you may miss an opportunity to get the best composition.

Next, timing. How long you spend shooting a timelapse depends on the equipment you’re using and the effect you’re after. Michael says: “To get a full sunrise experience I might shoot two to three hours before and then up to three hours after – that way I’ll get the full sunrise into blue hour and then a golden hour.”

If you just want some footage to include in an Instagram Reel or TikTok, you may find that filming or shooting for a few minutes is enough. The key equipment for shooting a timelapse is having a tripod as Michael explains: “Have a sturdy tripod, you don’t want to have any shakes. If it’s a windy day you could add a bag over the camera or weigh it down to reduce movement.”

Making content using a timelapse

Timelapses can elevate your content in an instant, creating timeless photos and videos, so don’t be afraid to share your footage. Michael enthuses: “There’s so much you can do with a timelapse. You can use them on your social media or incorporate them on YouTube videos – they’re a great opener or closer of a video.”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Cruise Photo FAQs
  • FAQs Overview

My family is traveling in multiple staterooms. Can I link multiple staterooms under one photo package?

Your Photo account will contain your photos that include at least one member of the purchasing stateroom. We can accommodate families traveling in more than one stateroom where the occupants are the package purchaser’s children 21 and under. If you meet this criteria, please order one photo package online and speak to a member of the Photo Gallery when you arrive onboard to have this arranged. We are not able to link accounts before you arrive onboard.

How many printed photos will I receive if I order the "All Your Digital Photos + Prints" package?

Note this package is not available on all ships. If available on your ship you will receive all your digital photos on a USB and any photo that is printed and displayed in the Photo Gallery (note: some photos may not be printed). You are not guaranteed to have one printed copy of each of your digital photos; only whatever is contained in your personal photo folder.

How many photos can I expect to receive with an unlimited photo package?

It’s up to you! There are up to 40 photo opportunities onboard, but it’s easy to take many photos of your family. Get the greatest value by purchasing an unlimited photo package and enjoy as many photos as you like. Private Studio images and group photography are not included.

We are celebrating a special event onboard. Can we book a private photographer to capture a group photo or event?

If you wish to set up an hour of private photography for the group, you may do so by inquiring in the Photo Gallery as soon as you board the ship. Group photos booked by special appointment and other special events are not included in our photo packages.

Are VAT refund receipts provided for qualifying guests that reside outside of the European Union?

Yes, the Photo Team onboard will be more than happy to provide a VAT refund receipt to qualifying guests that reside outside of the European Union. Please request a VAT refund receipt on the last evening of your cruise when you visit the Photo Gallery to collect your photos.

What is the Photo Cloud download service?

Cloud downloading is a simple and convenient way for you to download and make final selections of your purchased digital photos online after the cruise. You must purchase your photo package onboard to have access to the cloud services after your cruise.

Do I have to register pre-cruise for photo cloud?

Only guests who purchase a digital photo package onboard will be able to view and download their photos online after their cruise. If you do, instructions on how to access and view photos will be sent via your personal email after your cruise.

What are the advantages of downloading photos on the Cloud?

Guests are able to download and view their purchased photos and make final selections from any device at their convenience post cruise. There is no physical media (such as a USB drive) to take home.

Does this change how I view my photos during my voyage?

No, you can still view and purchase all of your photos while onboard at the Photo Gallery.

You can also pre-purchase packages from the Celebrity PCP platform, by logging into ‘Already Booked’ on the Celebrity website and purchasing your package, under the ‘Internet and Photo’ section.

Will I be able to buy individual photos, packages or both?

You will be able to view all photographs taken of you during your cruise. You will be able to unlock your chosen images and select additional photos to purchase from individual photos, to packages.

When will my photos be ready for viewing?

Photos will be uploaded and ready for viewing within 4-7 days after the voyage ends. It is usually much quicker and is often available for viewing on the same day a voyage ends.

What if I don’t see all of my photos when I get home?

Help is available on the website along with our customer support team if you should have any problems viewing your photos.

Can I make additional purchases after the voyage?

Unfortunately, we do not currently offer the ability to make purchases after your cruise. Be sure to purchase your photo packages onboard.

What if I want to change my selection of purchased photos?

You cannot change a purchase after getting off the ship. All photo selections and purchases are final.

How long will my photos be available for viewing?

Your images will be online for 30 days after your cruise ends. An email will be sent to remind you about your accounts becoming inactive after this time.

How does this impact my Loyalty Program discounts?

Your current loyalty discounts are still valid. All discounts remain the same for pre-cruise purchases and onboard purchases.

Does the Cloud download process impact images purchased at the Private Studio*?

Images purchased from the private studio, onboard Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships, are not available for downloading from the Cloud at this time. You will receive a USB drive with all purchased images as part of this special program.

*The Studio/PictureThis! is the private photography studio onboard and is separate from other photo event products.

How do I build my photobook?

Visit the Photo Gallery onboard to select your photos and build your photo book directly on any photo kiosk.

How many pages are in a Photo Book?

The Photo Book contains 20 pages and holds up to 34 guest photos plus photos of your ship, decks and ports of call. Photos must include at least one guest from the purchasing stateroom in order to be included in the Photo Book. The photos you choose are printed directly into the Photo Book. The Photo Book is horizontally orientated and measures 11” x 8.5” with typically 2 photos per page. Photo Books are available on most cruise itineraries.

When will my photobook be delivered?

The photo books typically take between 2 to 6 weeks to arrive, depending on the delivery address.
