Domestic border restrictions have ended for nearly all States, meaning you:

  • don’t need to apply for a border pass
  • won’t need a Covid test
  • won’t need to quarantine

However, some States and service operators do require proof of vaccination. So all that is required to travel for most Discover Australia packages is to be fully vaccinated. Even WA has now opened up! It is expected that any remaining temporary restrictions will end or ease over coming weeks – since all governments have detailed strategies to live with Covid and to enable their tourism industry to flourish again. See current travel requirements here .

Many travel insurance providers are now offering good cover for Covid, including:

  • Travel disruptions and additional expenses due to Covid
  • Positive Covid test before travel
  • Positive Covid test during travel (including need to change travel arrangements / isolation)
  • Cancellation Cover
  • Medical expenses cover

Insurance cover can be very inexpensive, like only $150 for three weeks in Europe # . We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance with Covid cover. Following are some insurance companies: Medibank | TID | AHM | NIB Book now to secure the best deal and biggest savings. Use part of your Early Bird savings to pay for your travel insurance!

See Booking Conditions for details, inclusions and exclusions. #1 You can choose to postpone your holiday to a future date; since prices vary by travel date some alternative dates may be at a higher price. Choosing to postpone closer to travel may incur supplier change fees, but no fees from us. #2 If your holiday is disrupted due to Covid by us (or a service provider) you will receive a Travel Credit to re-book a holiday. The information provided in relation to insurance and travel requirements is believed to be accurate and is provided in good faith without responsibility taken for it. Top sights & attractions for cruises to darwin, litchfield national park.

Just outside of Darwin, you’ll find Litchfield National Park, an eco-wonderland full of misty waterfalls, crystal-clear swimming holes, and monsoon forest. Hike through its lush trails or soar over the park while on a helicopter. Make sure to visit the Lost City, a breathtaking area with stunning sandstone formations that date back millions of years, and the enormous Magnetic Termite Mounds, which were made by tiny armies of grass-eating termites.

George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens

Discover the plants of northern Australia during a stroll around the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens. Witness spectacular displays of color in the blooming bromeliads, orchids, and heliconias. Learn about the garden’s history and the ways plants were used by Aboriginals. Children will enjoy spending time in the playground and treehouse or climbing up the baobab trees, while adults will find serenity at the garden’s cascading waterfall.

Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory

As the premier museum of the area, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory is well worth a visit. Its extensive collection of Aboriginal art is a marvel that includes island carvings and park paintings, while a room solely dedicated to Cyclone Tracy displays the city’s resilience in the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster. While you’re here, say hello to Sweetheart, a 17-foot-long stuffed alligator that once terrorized fishing boats in the Finniss River.

Top Things to Do in Darwin

Get up close to crocodiles.

There are several ways to interact with Darwin’s famous saltwater crocodiles. Take a cruise around the Adelaide River, where you’ll spot these ferocious reptiles jumping out of the water to feed on food high above. If you’re feeling brave, head to Crocosaurus Cove, where you can take a dip in a special pool and go cage swimming right next to the crocs.

Cruise Around Darwin Harbour

Admire the view during a scenic cruise around Darwin Harbour, which is twice as large as the iconic Sydney Harbour. Spot birds overhead, learn about the 1942 bombing raid that sank 12 ships, and finish off your relaxing tour by admiring the sunset over the Timor Sea.

Spot Animals at the Territory Wildlife Park

Explore Australia’s bushland at the Territory Wildlife Park. Hike around the park’s jungle trails, or go on a guided safari and discover several of the Top End’s signature animals including wallabies, Tata dragons, Australian pelicans, long neck turtles, and black wallaroos.

Top Food and Drink in Darwin

On Darwin cruises, you’ll discover cuisine featuring strong Asian influences and fresh ocean ingredients. Stop by one of the open-air markets, where you’ll find a melange of street foods with Thai, Sri Lankan, Indian, Chinese, and Malaysian flavors. Taste one of the area’s local staples, like a barramundi burger, mud crab, or fried crocodile tail.

Culture and History of Darwin

The first settlers in Darwin were the indigenous Larrakia people. In 1839, Lt. John Port Stokes arrived on the shores of Darwin and named the harbor after his friend and former shipmate, Charles Darwin. During World War II, the city was devastated by a series of bombings and air raids by the Japanese. Once the war ended, the city was rebuilt only to encounter disaster once again in 1974, when the vicious Cyclone Tracy wrecked most of Darwin. Even though several thousand people were displaced, many returned to the city soon after. Through extensive reconstruction efforts, Darwin evolved into the cosmopolitan haven it is today.

Darwin Port Facilities & Location

The Darwin cruise port is Fort Hill Wharf, which is less than a mile away from the city’s center. There are many destinations within walking distance of the port, including the Darwin Waterfront Precinct, the Smith Street Mall, and the WWII Oil Storage Tunnels.

Transportation in Darwin

Darwin is an excellent city to discover on foot. If you’re looking to venture further out during your day in port on a cruise to Darwin, there are also taxis, shuttles, and hop-on, hop-off buses (HOHO) you can take. If you’ve signed up for a shore excursion, transportation to and from the cruise port is included.

Shopping Near the Darwin Cruise Port

Within walking distance of Fort Hill Wharf, you’ll find major supermarkets, pharmacies, and the Smith Street Mall, where there are plenty of stores and souvenir shops to explore.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

You’ll use the Australian dollar (AUD) during Darwin cruises. Major credit cards are accepted in most places, but it’s always a good idea to carry around some cash, which you can find at any ATM or money exchange. Tipping is not common, but if you enjoyed excellent service, you can always leave a little something extra.

January is a great time of the year on the country’s South-West coast. February is sunny and less windy on the West Coast. The ‘doldrums’ occur at the Rowley Shoals from September to November. Sydney is at its festive best in December and January and cruising around the Eyre Peninsula is also best in January -- the summer months are truly stunning aboard the TRUE NORTH.

But don't worry - all Australia Cruises on the TRUE NORTH are scheduled to take seasonal advantage.

True North Sails into 30 Years

True North Adventure Cruises - has sailed into 30 years of continuous operations. The now revered adventure-cruise operator first cruised Western Australia’s remote Kimberley coast during 1987 when founding director Craig Howson commenced fishing type charters along a coastline that was and still is largely inaccessible from land.

The Helicopter

Adding another dimension to the adventure, most cruise options on the TRUE NORTH feature an on-board helicopter! Carrying guests in air conditioned comfort, the ship’s helicopter provides unique opportunity to witness grandeur; unique opportunity to fish billabongs that have never been fished; unique opportunity to discover your very own wilderness!

TRUE NORTH Impresses Again

The TRUE NORTH has once again impressed on the world stage coming second in the 2020 Traveller Made Brand Storytelling competition. In such esteemed company, True North’s marketing team was especially pleased to receive this additional acknowledgement.

Catriona Rowntree Talks With Craig Howson

A commonly asked question is “When is the best time to see the Kimberley?” And the answer is “The Kimberley is always at its best!” However certain times of the year can make it easier to satisfy particular interest. For example, if you would like to see plenty of whale action then departures in August and September are definitely for you! From late July humpback and southern right whales reach the Kimberley after swimming-up the west coast to reach breeding grounds in the north and it’s very common for guests to get great views of whales breaching and basking on the surface.

Tracking Gentle Giants

Rhincodon typus can grow up to 18 metres in length and is the world’s largest fish! Despite this, little is known about these gentle giants of the sea. They may not venture near the surface for months or even years on end – only frequenting a few locations around the world to feast on seasonal abundances of plankton, krill or coral and fish spawn. One such location is Cenderawasih Bay in West Papua. Although whale sharks are generally thought t

OVERNIGHT: 4 nights Indian Pacific

Awake to see the sunrise unfold across Australia’s largest outback town, Kalgoorlie. This morning, we’ll delve into this mining town’s fascinating past and present, with a visit to the region’s gold-rush era, now modern-day, Super Pit mine. Decide how you want to explore Kalgoorlie on your choice of Off Train Experience, including morning refreshments.

Reboarding the train mid-morning for brunch, the remainder of the day is on board at your leisure. Sit back and enjoy the hospitality as you take in spectacular views of the seemingly endless expanse of the Nullarbor Plain. You’ll cross borders and time zones, entering South Australia before dinner. Late evening, the train will pull into the almost-ghost-town of Cook for a nightcap, late-night bonfire and stargazing experience. (B,D)

Spend the morning travelling through the pastoral lands and communities of remote South Australia as the Indian Pacific cruises past the Flinders Rangers, Spencer Gulf and the Adelaide Plains. Breakfast and lunch are both served on board. Mid-afternoon, the train pulls into Two Wells, where you’ll disembark and transfer in comfortable coaches for a short ride to the world-renowned, wineproducing region of the Barossa Valley. You’ll spend the evening at Seppeltsfield Winery, delighting in a signature dining experience in the vintage cellar.

A traditional ‘Firing of the Barrel’ display kicks off the evening, followed by a food and wine pairing curated by Executive Chef Owen Andrews, highlighting regional produce and traditional methods that reflect the story of the Barossa. Here, Platinum guests are also treated to a special 100-year-old wine tasting experience.

After dinner, you’ll return to the Indian Pacific, continuing your rail journey through the night. (B,L,D)

Crossing another border during the night, you’ll wake up in Broken Hill, New South Wales. Enjoy a hearty breakfast, ready for the day’s activities in the Silver City. You’ll have a choice of four Off Train Experiences, including guided history, art and cultural experiences that showcase the highlights of Australia’s first heritage-listed city.

Returning to the train for lunch, admire the scenery as the Indian Pacific travels through regional New South Wales.

Tonight, dinner is served on board as you make the most of your final night exploring Australia by train. (B,L,D)

The Blue Mountains is known for its soaring sandstone ridges wrapped in native flora. This World Heritage-listed area marks your final stop before arriving in Sydney. Say goodbye to the Indian Pacific after breakfast, to travel deep into the mountains for this afternoon’s Off Train Experiences. Scenic World includes four phenomenal mountain experiences, from the Scenic Skyway, which takes you over ancient ravines, with 360-degree vistas to the Scenic Cableway that glides over the forest to the valley floor and the Scenic Railway, the steepest passenger railway in the world. Alternatively, stretch your legs on a guided walk with spectacular views from numerous lookouts along the trail. Both experiences end at Echo Point Lookout, perched on the edge of the escarpment in Katoomba, where a light lunch is served.

Complete your journey on our chartered New South Wales rail service (fully hosted by our crew) into Sydney Central Station. Alternatively, if you prefer to arrive in Sydney earlier, stay on board the Indian Pacific to travel directly to Sydney Central Station . (B,L)

What Travelers Say About Their Australia Small Ship Cruises

The cabin was comfortable, the food was delicious, the itinerary was well-planned and the sites on the Great Barrier Reef were amazing. The crew were super-friendly and went out of their way to make sure we were having a wonderful time. I will definitely use AdventureSmith in the future and have already recommended them to friends.

A lot of fun. Great group of people on the boat, great crew. Amazing snorkeling. Well organized.

The trip was amazing and fulfilled a lifelong dream of snorkeling and diving on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The reef is alive and fantastic so go see it.

We were able to get away from the dive spots that the majority of tourists go to so we were allowed to be in spots where the reef was much more healthy and populous with pretty fish. If you want to go to the Great Barrier Reef, do not bother with a day trip.

Coral Expeditions did a wonderful job. The cabin was comfortable, the food was delicious, the itinerary was well-planned and the sites on the Great Barrier Reef were amazing. The crew were super-friendly and went out of their way to make sure we were having a wonderful time. There were 22 of us, and every single person was fun to talk to. I made friends I plan to stay in touch with. I highly recommend Coral Expeditions and plan to return to Down Under to take advantage of their other trips. I most enjoyed snorkeling the fringing reef off Lizard Island.

Accommodations Review

I was traveling solo but had a double room and was not required to pay a single supplement. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom spacious (especially for a ship!), and the crew came in every day to clean.

Meals Review

All of the food was excellent. One night, the captain manned the grill, cooking sausages, chicken, beef steak, and kangaroo steak. Several meals were buffets with excellent options, two dinners were sit-down dinners with options for the courses. Breakfast was ample, with both cold and hot dishes. Tea and coffee were available around the clock. The cash bar was well-stocked.

Crew & Guides Review

John, the trip director, was fantastic. He is a great naturalist and also an expert at snorkeling and other water activities. There was also a SCUBA instructor who I heard great things about, but because I have asthma I cannot SCUBA.

Transportation Review

I had a canceled plane to deal with, and Coral Expeditions went above and beyond in making sure I could get to the ship for the cruise.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

I had lots of good information ahead of the trip and packed everything I needed for the cruise. I wanted to go to the Great Barrier Reef during a particular week, and I was having a very difficult time figuring out my options. I had used AdventureSmith for a trip to Alaska last year and thought, "maybe they could help" - and, indeed, Nick helped me find the perfect option. I will definitely use AdventureSmith in the future and have already recommended them to friends.

Traveler Advice

The one fly in my ointment was that I am pretty severely nearsighted, and I didn't know to bring a prescription snorkeling mask. I brought prescription swim goggles, but they won't work with a snorkel. Coral Expeditions had a bunch of options of Rx snorkeling masks, but none of them were strong enough for my bad eyes. So if you are like me, investigate an Rx snorkeling mask before you come.

A lot of fun. Great group of people on the boat, great crew. Amazing snorkeling. Well organized.

Very comfortable. No problems.

Very healthy, tasty meals with plenty of selection. Desserts were okay, not the best.

Kristy was really friendly and knowledgeable. Mason did a great job of keeping us safe and was very friendly. All of the other crew were friendly and helpful. Guillermo was always smiling and ready to help. Good crew!

No problems.

Bring 2 swimsuits as you will be swimming a couple times a day. Also, they have games on board, but no cards. I wish I had brought playing cards for shorter evening games like multiple solitaire. Come well rested - you have to be up before 7 in the morning each morning.

This traveler reviews his Great Barrier Reef Cruise aboard the now-retired Coral Expeditions II .

The trip was amazing and fulfilled a lifelong dream of snorkeling and diving on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. My favorite places were Lizard Island and the Ribbon Reefs. Lizard Island was a great first snorkel spot because it was easy to access the water from the sandy beach. After snorkeling the crew had happy hour cocktails and snacks on the beach while we watched the sunset over the Coral Sea. The optional hike to Cooks Lookout was an enjoyable surprise as I didn't expect any hiking on a reef cruise. The Ribbon Reefs were spectacular for snorkeling and diving. I was worried about bleached reef but here there was so much life and vibrant colors. It was exactly what I had envisioned the Great Barrier Reef would be. There was a rough crossing from Cooktown to Lizard Island where the seas got rough, but the captain had prepared us in advance. The morning in Cooktown was interesting but only because I have been fascinated by Captain Cook. I think most folks were anxious to get to the reef. I had always wanted to snorkel and dive on the Great Barrier Reef.  I was not interested in a crowded day tour. We traveled with our family and on board there was a mix of Australians, American, Europeans and others. We were pleased there were other Gen X travelers on board and not all older folks.

The ship is not fancy but was clean and comfortable. Our B Deck cabins were clean and comfortable with nice view windows. Our kids were in the cabin next door and it was nice they didn't have to walk outside to visit our cabin. My favorite place to relax was on the sundeck, get there early to secure a lounge chair.

The food was great with lots of seafood and steaks. I even tried Kangaroo. Our kids are not picky eaters, but they are kids and there were always lots of options for them or the crew would suggest a kid friendly meal if they didn't like that days options.

The guides were fantastic and made the trip very educational. Lectures were interesting and they were available in the water to identify fish and coral. The scuba guide was especially great with our kids. He made my 13 year old very comfortable and got him diving right away.  Our 11 year old was too young to scuba dive but he allowed him to try the gear and get a feel for diving in shallow water. Now he wants to go back to scuba.

Our cruise was part of a larger package and AdvenutreSmith handled all the transfers and arrangements seamlessly. It would have been a challenge to find the ship on our own but directions from AdventureSmith made it easy.

We were well prepared and knew exactly what to expect. Many travelers on board were envious of the extensive documents we showed them.

The reef is alive and fantastic so go see it. Be prepared for a lot of snorkeling and time in the water. Practice at home so you can spend as much time as possible on the reef.

This traveler reviews her 4-day experience of the now 8-day-only Great Barrier Reef Cruise .

I have always wanted to dive on the Great Barrier Reef and was so happy to have chosen Coral Expeditions for a 4 day trip as we were able to get away from where most day trippers dive and see this spectacular reef. We had the option to snorkel or resort dive on 3 of the 4 days. The staff was excellent in taking care of all our needs, making sure all snorkeling and diving were safe. My 13 year old who had never dived was able to do the resort dive with instruction and loved it! We attached this trip to an overall Australian month long adventure and so glad we did!

The Great Barrier Reef was amazing to snorkel and dive. We were able to get away from the dive spots that the majority of tourists go to so we were allowed to be in spots where the reef was much more healthy and populous with pretty fish. Seeing my 13 year old try diving for the first time and loving it was awesome! Cool glass bottom boat for those that wanted a respite from snorkeling was a nice option. The city of Cairns was not terribly exciting and the embarkation point to meet the ship was a bit confusing but not a big deal.

The cabins were spacious with plenty of room and great windows for viewing.

Great variety of food offered daily and catered to any special request.

Guides were awesome, knowledgeable and took care to make sure everyone was safe when out snorkeling or diving.

We had all our documentation & trip information prior to our departure.  All questions were answered promptly and we were given great advice throughout the planning process.  Couldn't have been more prepared prior to departure.

Prepare for the possibility of jelly fish at certain times of the year and bugs. If you want to go to the Great Barrier Reef, do not bother with a day trip. This trip was very affordable and you were able to see the Reef in its healthy state.

Foreign boat numbers spike as government ramps up enforcement on northern coast

A composite image of a man with ocean behind him and a fishing boat and military drone next to him.

New government data shows the cat and mouse game to stamp out foreign boats continues in northern Australia, with authorities on track to intercept double the amount of boats compared with the previous year.

The fresh surge comes as authorities ramp up surveillance using military drones amid concerns about people-smuggling  arrivals recently entering an Australian air base .

Three boats, some with military people onboard, in blue ocean

According to the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, 216 foreign fishing boats have been intercepted since July 1, compared to 125 in the previous financial year.

The bulk of the activity is occurring in marine parks of Western Australia's far north coast, close to where several people-smuggling boats arrived in recent months.

'Hiding from Border Force mob'

There are only a handful of communities in the remote area, with the main hub being the Aboriginal community of Kalumburu.

Residents such as Ildephonse Cheinmora have noticed an increase of foreign boats in local waters.

A man smiling and wearing a red cap.

"People from Indonesia have been coming into our waters and fishing, and they've been coming ashore," he said.

"They've been camping, and chopping down the mangroves to seek shelter and hide from the Border Force mob.

"It's not good for them to come here unannounced without us knowing."

Residents have reported seeing a boat wedged in a creek that was painted dark green, which they interpreted as an attempt to blend into the mangroves and avoid the spotting planes that flew over the coast several times a week.

Mangroves in Darwin

Mr Cheinmora said he encountered Indonesian fishermen on a recent boat trip who asked for food and fuel.

He said the group had lots of shark meat piled up on their boat, and were waiting for the tide to turn so they could sail north back to Indonesia.

The Wunambal Gaambera man said residents had noticed an increase in government aerial patrols, especially since a boatload of Chinese men walked ashore and entered the nearby Truscott-Mungalalu Airbase in early April without being intercepted.

"They do seem to be doing more, and having more people out there, so hopefully catch them before they reach the mainland," Mr Cheinmora said.

"It will be difficult to stop all the boats though, some are pretty cunning and they know what they're doing.

"They just go in and grab what they want and head straight back out, so you've got to be very quick and fast to catch them – and it's a very big area to find these little boats."

'Enormous part of the Earth'

It was a sentiment echoed by defence strategist Mick Ryan.

The former Major General in the Australian Army said the remote northern coast had always posed a challenge.

"Australia's north is an enormous part of the Earth, and we're a small country with only so many resources, so it's just inevitable that sometimes people might be able to slip through," he said.

"It doesn't mean it's acceptable, and just means we have to review our practices when it happens."

The number foreign fishing boats and people-smuggler arrivals is small compared to the numbers seen in the early 2000s.

A group of men, their faces pixellated, climb aboard a ute on a dustry red outback road

For example in 2005/2006, three times as many foreign boats were recorded in northern waters than in the past financial year.

But community leaders have accused the Commonwealth agencies of becoming complacent and scaling back their presence in recent years.

The Australian Border Force has denied the claim, saying in a statement that it was "postured appropriately to meet the current maritime threat environment".

'Hide and seek champions'

It is clear efforts have ramped up to spot and stop foreign boats in recent months.

In December, Operation Leedstrum was launched to crack down on illegal fishing in the Kimberley Marine Park, while aviation documents reveal a schedule of military drone flights running from Truscott-Mungalalu Airbase.

A drone that looks like a small plane, on a runway.

The challenges were referenced obliquely in an Australian Defence Force post on Facebook showing soldiers launching the drones, captioned, "Hide and seek champions".

Mick Ryan said it was normal for resources to be mobilised in response to ever-changing threats.

"The Defence Force doesn't make kneejerk responses with moving people around," he said.

"It's all intelligence-based and it goes through a planning process to ensure limited resources are put in the right place at the right point in time."

He said the arrival of Chinese men at the Truscott-Mungalalu Airbase was concerning but pointed out the group posed no threat to the surveillance activities being run at the privately-run facility.

"I think like most Australians I'm concerned that people are able to penetrate our defences so easily," he said.

"But when you have a look at how big northern Australia is, and limited resources this country has for surveillance of that entire coastline, it's not surprising that every now and then people are able to get through."

Criminal charges

It appears authorities have resumed prosecuting foreign fishermen in the courts, after pausing the practice during the COVID pandemic.

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority has confirmed 35 fishermen have gone before the Darwin Magistrates Court in the past four months.

Penalties have included fines, good behaviour bonds and imprisonment.

In the most recent case, 15 fishers — who were caught in Kimberley marine parks with 20 kilograms of sea cucumber onboard — were fined a total of $31,300.

It was unclear how they would be expected to pay the amount before being deported to Indonesia.

'Responsibility to save them'

Back at Kalumburu, residents joke that the big crocodiles that lurk in the mangrove-lined creeks remain the most constant line of defence.

While the Indonesian crews are familiar with the coastline from a centuries-long history of fishing the northern coast, the groups being dropped by people-smugglers in the middle of the night are a different story.

"It's better that we find them before something happens to them, because there are big crocs and sharks and they could get lost," Mr Cheinmora said.

"Or they might get exhausted and have no feed or waterhole.

"Because we know the country, we'll feel like it's our responsibility if we don't find them."
