Demystifying Adaptive Cruise Control in your Mazda CX-5

Remember those long drives where your foot hovered between the gas and brake, constantly adjusting to the ebb and flow of traffic? Enter the Mazda CX-5’s Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – your highway hero ready to take the wheel (figuratively speaking, of course). But how does this magical technology work? Let’s peel back the curtain and peek inside.

Table of Contents

Adaptive Cruise Control

Eyes of the Road

At the heart of ACC lies a vigilant radar sensor tucked behind the front grille. Like a bat with high-tech echolocation, it emits radio waves, bounces them off the car ahead, and calculates the distance to keep you safe and comfy.

Brain of the Machine

This information then reaches the car’s computer, faster than you can say “highway hypnosis.” It analyzes the distance, your set speed, and even factors in road conditions. Think of it as a miniature maestro conducting a symphony of acceleration and braking.

Adaptive, not Automatic

Unlike traditional cruise control, ACC reacts. If the car ahead slows down, so do you, maintaining a safe distance you can adjust with a button press. Want to close the gap a bit? Another button tap does the trick. This isn’t just cruise control; it’s a dynamic partnership between you and your Mazda.

Stop & Go Magic

Some CX-5 models boast ACC with Stop & Go, taking things to the next level. Stuck in slow-moving traffic? The car not only slows down, it can come to a complete stop without you touching a pedal. When the traffic starts moving again, a tap of the accelerator or a nudge on the steering wheel gets you back in the flow.

The Benefits of Adaptive Cruise Control

So, what does this mean for you?

  • Reduced Fatigue:  Long drives become less tiring as your foot gets a break from the constant pedal dance.
  • Safer Driving:  ACC helps maintain a safe distance, reducing the risk of rear-end collisions.
  • Improved Fuel Economy:  Maintaining a steady speed can mean better fuel efficiency, especially in stop-and-go traffic.
  • Stress-Free Highway Cruising:  Enjoy the scenic route without constantly adjusting your speed. Let ACC handle the driving, you handle the sightseeing.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Final Thoughts on Adaptive Cruise Control

While ACC is a fantastic tool, it’s not a magic shield. Always keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and be ready to take over if needed. Think of it as a helpful copilot, not an autopilot.

So, the next time you hit the highway in your Mazda CX-5 , engage the Adaptive Cruise Control and experience a smoother, safer , and more relaxing drive. Just remember, with great technology comes great responsibility. Cruise with confidence, but never with complacency. Now, go forth and conquer the open road!

2022 Maxda CX-5 Review

cx 5 auto cruise

  • Keen handling and steering make the CX-5 enjoyable to drive
  • Attractive and upscale cabin for a premium experience
  • Optional turbocharged engine provides plenty of power
  • Quiet at highway speeds
  • Base engine's lackluster acceleration
  • Ride is a little firm for the class
  • Less rear legroom and cargo room than most competitors

What's new

  • All-wheel drive now comes standard
  • Updated front and rear styling
  • Minor suspension and power upgrades for sharper performance
  • Revised trim level lineup
  • Part of the second CX-5 generation introduced for 2017

No one looks to small crossover SUVs for distinctive style or grand times behind the wheel. These are vehicles that emphasize the "utility" in SUV and wring maximum space for people, pets and personal effects in a quest for daily-driven competence. So how does the 2022 Mazda CX-5, with its tight rear quarters and skimpy cargo space, manage to rise near the top of the class? Simple: The CX-5 delivers joy to its driver. Not mere satisfaction for a job well done, but the same pleasure you might get from a small sport sedan and open highway, with the added benefit of room for supplies from the home improvement store.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2022 Mazda CX-5 2.5 S 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl 6A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

The CX-5's base four-cylinder engine is a good introduction, but the car comes alive with its optional turbocharged counterpart. For 2022, the turbo engine gets a slight boost, up 6 horsepower from last year's model when filled with premium gas. The CX-5 has always deftly balanced ride comfort and responsive handling, but this year's minor suspension updates aim to reduce road noise and vibrations and tighten up control. Finally, subtle revisions to the front and rear bumpers, headlights and sundry panels give the CX-5 a dose of fresh style.

Rivals such as the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson and Nissan Rogue offer more rear legroom and cargo volume, but the CX-5 is unmatched when it comes to combining performance and refinement in such an affordable package. Read our test team's Expert Rating below for a deeper analysis on what makes the CX-5 a top pick for a small crossover SUV.

What's it like to live with?

We spent a year and 20,000 miles with a 2018 CX-5 that remains comparable to the 2022 model. See what we thought about Mazda's fun-to-drive compact SUV after a year of experience behind the wheel in our long-term road test.

Editor's Take

Zach Doell is the Vehicle Testing Editor for U.S. News Best Cars.

The Mazda CX-5 is an oldie but a goodie. I spent a week test driving the 2024 CX-5 2.5 Turbo Signature ($40,600 as tested) and came away impressed with its energetic acceleration, nimble handling and responsive steering. It's quite sporty for a family-friendly compact SUV , yet it still manages to shrug off rough roads with a refined ride. In my opinion, the CX-5's physique has matured beautifully since its 2017 debut, although its advanced age is more apparent on the inside. The cabin feels upscale and well put-together, and I found both passenger and cargo space to be sufficient, but the interior is let down by Mazda's knob-controlled infotainment system. It complicates otherwise simple functions and limits touch-screen functionality when the vehicle is in motion. Despite this dated tech, I think the CX-5 remains one of the best buys in this class, especially at its $29,300 base price. It’s well worth consideration next to rivals like the Toyota RAV4 , Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson , as well as its newer CX-50 sibling.

Is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 a Good SUV?

Yes, the 2024 CX-5 is an excellent compact SUV . For an accessible starting price, it offers a finely tuned and relatively powerful engine, top-of-the-class driving dynamics and a well-designed interior. We named it a 2024 Best Compact SUV for the Money finalist because of its terrific combination of quality and value. There’s little to dislike about the CX-5, which is all the more impressive considering it hasn’t seen a refresh in the better part of a decade.

Should I Buy the 2024 Mazda CX-5?

The CX-5 should be toward the top of your list to begin with, and this is especially true for anyone who wants an SUV with a little more oomph without losing out on practicality. That said, there are other options that might win out, depending on your needs. The Hyundai Tucson is a competitor for the top spot in the class thanks in large part to its swanky feature-filled interior. The Tucson focuses more on family hauling than spirited joyrides, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Those who plan to haul cargo more often might prefer the Subaru Forester . It also edges out the other two when it comes to fuel economy, though not by much.

Thinking of leasing a Mazda CX-5?

2023 vs. 2024 Mazda CX-5: What's the Difference?

For 2024, Mazda drops the erstwhile base trim, the 2.5 S, and adds a higher-end 2.5 Carbon Turbo trim level. Otherwise, the lineup remains largely unchanged.

Compare the 2023 and 2024 CX-5 »

Here are the key changes for the Mazda CX-5 over the last few years:

  • 2024: shuffled trim lineup
  • 2023: no notable changes
  • 2022: all-wheel drive made standard; refreshed exterior styling
  • 2021: diesel engine discontinued; 10.25-inch infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay made standard; more optional driver-assistance features
  • 2020: more standard features

How Much Is a 2024 Mazda CX-5?

The base 2.5 S Select trim starts at $29,300 and comes with equipment such as synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control and a 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The 2.5 S Preferred costs $30,650 and adds genuine leather upholstery and a moonroof, among other features. For $31,950, the 2.5 S Carbon Edition gets 19-inch wheels and unique interior and exterior styling. The 2.5 S Premium ($33,900) adds paddle shifters and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, while the 2.5 S Premium Plus ($36,500) gets a head-up display and ventilated front seats. The 2.5 S Carbon Turbo, with Turbo indicating the more powerful engine, costs $37,000 and features unique interior and exterior styling. This trim comes with significant niceties like genuine leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, a power liftgate and a moonroof with only a mild increase in price. It also comes with the vast majority of the lineup’s tech and driver-assistance features.

2024 Mazda CX-5 Versus the Competition

Mazda cx-5 vs. hyundai tucson.

Perhaps the CX-5’s top competitor, the Hyundai Tucson is another powerhouse among compact SUVs . The Tucson puts even more emphasis on interior comfort and tech than the CX-5 does, and it succeeds across the board. The Hyundai has the most luxurious cabin in the class and is highly comfortable and finely designed. The Tucson is less exciting under the hood but not by much. However, the Tucson is also available as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, while the Mazda does not. Both SUVs offer great value, but if fun driving isn’t your priority, go with the Tucson.

Compare the CX-5 and Tucson »

Mazda CX-5 vs. Kia Sportage Hybrid

Divers looking for a pristine balance between performance, efficiency and luxury should look to the Kia Sportage Hybrid . This SUV comes with an enthusiastic hybrid powertrain that packs 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Add the available all-wheel drive, and the Sportage Hybrid competes closely with the CX-5, even if its handling isn’t as exciting. As a hybrid, the Sportage gets significantly better fuel economy, and it also has a lower base price than the CX-5 while maintaining a superior interior. Your choice will likely come down to personal preference, but the Kia is a tempting option.

CX-5 Interior: Comfort and Class

2024 cx-5 interior quality.

In no regard does the 2024 CX-5 skimp on interior quality. It’s full of upmarket materials, soft-touch surfaces and finely designed flourishes. It even competes with many entry-level luxury vehicles when it comes to quality of material and design, which is especially impressive given the price point.

2024 CX-5 Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

Unlike most of its contemporary competitors, the CX-5 does not use a touch screen for its infotainment system, though partial touch capability now works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto only. Instead, the display is primarily controlled through a rotary knob, which may be distracting to use while driving. Otherwise, the infotainment system is easy to navigate and fairly user-friendly.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 10.25-inch display, wired Android Auto, wired Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a six-speaker stereo, HD Radio and front and rear USB ports
  • Available infotainment features: a 10-speaker Bose audio system, additional USB ports, satellite radio, navigation, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and wireless device charging
  • Additional standard features: a 4.6-inch driver information display, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry and push-button start
  • Other available features: a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a moonroof and ambient interior lighting

For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto?

2024 CX-5 Cargo Space

The CX-5 manages 30.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear row and 59.3 cubic feet with the rear row stowed. This is smaller than many key competitors, but it’s still serviceable.

How Many People Does the 2024 CX-5 Seat?

The CX-5 can seat up to five people, though the rear row will likely be cramped if carrying three adults. The seats are comfortable and supportive for drivers and riders of all sizes, and leg- and headroom are plentiful.

Synthetic leather upholstery, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are standard features. Higher trims offer amenities like genuine leather or Nappa leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. The rear row also reclines for extra comfort.

2024 CX-5 and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

CX-5 Performance: Class-Leading Excitement

2024 cx-5 engine.

The 2024 CX-5 comes standard with a 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The engine is punchy and eager, but it lacks the same enthusiasm at highway speeds, which can make passing difficult. The higher trims get an upgraded turbo-four engine that manages 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque with regular gasoline or 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque with premium. This engine offers even more oomph and makes passing a breeze.

Equipped with the base engine, the CX-5 has a zero-to-60-mph time of about 8.9 seconds, according to Mazda. With the available turbo-four, that time shrinks to 7.3 seconds.

2024 CX-5 Gas Mileage

With the base engine, the 2024 CX-5 gets 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Upgrading to the turbo-four cuts these estimates to 22/27 mpg city/highway.

2024 CX-5 Ride and Handling

Among a class of vehicles with fairly tame driving dynamics, the CX-5 is a shining example of the fusion of fun and practicality. It has finely tuned handling, precise steering and a cushy, controlled ride. It corners exceptionally well and feels stable in just about all conditions. Few, if any, competitors can match this level of performance.

2024 CX-5 Towing Capacity

The CX-5 can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Why You Can Trust Our Reviews

U.S. News & World Report has been ranking the best cars, trucks and SUVs since 2007, and our staff has more than 75 years of combined experience in the auto industry.

This 2024 Mazda CX-5 review combines multiple professional reviews with concrete data like performance specs, fuel economy estimates and safety ratings and incorporates applicable research for all models in this generation, which launched for 2017. Check out excerpts from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

"Mazda has a challenge on its hands. The CX-5 compact crossover SUV is the automaker's best-selling model and it's entering its eighth year in production since its last complete redesign. Meanwhile, in 2023, Mazda introduced the new (and better, in our opinion) CX-50 model. It is about the same size as the CX-5, offers the same drivetrains, and has a name that fits with Mazda's emerging new SUV lineup."

"Buying a compact SUV doesn't necessarily mean giving up on owning a car that's elegantly designed and fun to drive. Mazda's current-generation CX-5 has been around since 2017, but it's aging gracefully and is still a solid choice in the segment."

"Taking a look back at the Mazda CX-5's history is a good way to understand where it stands today. It's got as many Car and Driver 10Best awards as it does tires, but after seven years of one of our favorite crossovers, the CX-5 is due for a rejuvenation. It's still a better driver and far more luxurious than the train of competitors behind it, but the new kids on the block have quickly outshined its trophy cabinet. Under the hood is a 187-hp inline-four engine with standard all-wheel drive. The optional 256-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter is the powertrain to get, but thankfully Mazda has decided against the popular CVT and instead uses a traditional six-speed automatic transmission, which sweetens the CX-5 driving experience. While it gives up some space for the sake of style, sitting in a CX-5 is enough to convince you of its luxury. For space, we'd stick with the newer Honda CR-V or the slightly larger CX-50, but despite its age, the CX-5 still drives like it's out to prove something."

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

cx 5 auto cruise

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

cx 5 auto cruise

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

cx 5 auto cruise

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

cx 5 auto cruise

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

cx 5 auto cruise

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

cx 5 auto cruise

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

cx 5 auto cruise

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

GPS error after CarPlay upgrade (2018 Mazda3)

  • Thread starter psychotoad
  • Start date Thursday at 4:26 AM

I recently updated the firmware to the latest version in my 2018 Mazda 3 (which went well, no problems) and then fitted the Carplay/Android Auto USB hub that is readily available on eBay, AliExpress etc. The hub works and I can use wired Android Auto no problem. But I went back into my Mazda navigation and it said I was about 30 miles from my actual location. I thought I'd reset things so turned the car off, factory reset the infotainment and then the GPS moved me to the road outside a Moscow Opera House approx 1800 miles away. I disconnected the battery, disconnected and reconnected the cables at the back of the infotainment unit and I'm still in Moscow City centre. Has anyone encountered this when doing the Carplay hub install?

2018 mazda cx5

Select a year

  • Lows Missing some tech features, on the small side of the segment.
  • Verdict The Mazda CX-5 brings zoom-zoom spirit and upscale appointments to a humdrum vehicle class.

What's New for 2018?

For 2018, Mazda updated the CX-5’s standard four-cylinder engine with cylinder deactivation. The technology shuts down two cylinders during cruising to improve fuel efficiency. Every CX-5 now has a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob as well as blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross-traffic alert. The base model adds a host of active safety options, including adaptive cruise control and lane keeping. The Touring trim receives 19-inch wheels and the full suite of driver assists. The top-tier Grand Touring adds memory settings for the driver’s seat and six power adjustments for the passenger. The Grand Select model is discontinued.

Original MSRP:

  • Sport: $25,145
  • Touring: $27,210
  • Grand Touring: $30,640

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

While the CX-5 is one of the few in its class without a turbocharged engine, this four-cylinder feels quite responsive. Mazda enhanced the 2.5-liter inline-four with cylinder deactivation to improve fuel efficiency. The engine still makes 187 horsepower, but torque has increased by one pound-foot, to 186. The quick-shifting six-speed automatic transmission carries over unchanged, and we prefer it to the dull and droning continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs) used by some competitors. The CX-5 also retains front- and all-wheel-drive formats. This Mazda comes alive on curvy roads, but you don’t need to drive the CX-5 hard to appreciate its excellence. Road noise is minimal, and the damping is neither stiff nor floaty. This ute soaks up rough roads without commotion and has the ride quality of crossovers that cost twice as much.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest numbers on current and older vehicles, visit the EPA’s website and select Find & Compare Cars.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

It’s clear that the CX-5’s interior designers sweated the details of this redesign. First-rate materials make it feel upscale. For instance, the base Sport model has a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob for a touch of sophistication. The floor-mounted accelerator pedal feels great underfoot, and the steering sits directly in front of the driver. The seats are very comfortable, too, but we wish Mazda offered ventilation for leather-clad models. The updated CX-5 lost some cargo space, but it gained more nooks and crannies in the cabin for smartphones and other small items. The center console has a deep tray at the front and a useful bin with a removable shelf. Also, the rear seats fold down and create a flat load floor, great for runs to Costco and trips with the dogs.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every CX-5 sports an attractive 7.0-inch infotainment screen that sits atop the dash like a floating tablet. It satisfies with an intuitive console-mounted rotary control and a straightforward interface. While the Mazda Connect system wouldn’t seem out of place in a BMW or Audi, it’s missing desirable features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The base Sport trim has a four-speaker stereo, HD radio, and two USB ports. Touring models have two more speakers and two extra USB ports on the back of the center console. Navigation and a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system are available with the Preferred Equipment package and standard on the top trim.
