MÖTLEY CRÜE And DEF LEPPARD's Stadium Tour Earns $173.5 Million

According to Billboard , MÖTLEY CRÜE and DEF LEPPARD 's "The Stadium Tour" sold 1.3 million tickets and earned $173.5 million, making it the biggest tour of either band's career.

The biggest market on the tour, which featured support from POISON and JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS , was Boston, where the four acts performed two concerts at Fenway Park on August 5-6 and sold 64,000 tickets for total earnings of $9.3 million. Four individual shows broke the $6 million threshold: Charlotte, North Carolina; Denver, Colorado; Glendale, Arizona; and Inglewood, California. Average nightly earnings hit $4.96 million.

"The Stadium Tour" averaged 37,520 tickets each night, drawing more than three times the audience that each band previously reached on their own.

MÖTLEY CRÜE announced "The Stadium Tour" in 2019, just months after the band supposedly noticed a massive surge in interest following the huge success of the CRÜE 's Netflix biopic "The Dirt" .

MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx told Entertainment Tonight that returning to the road with his bandmates has been "unbelievable. I'm so grateful to be doing this, and it started, like, three years ago when the movie came out — two and a half years ago," he said. "We kind of, we broke up the band. We just decided to quit touring. We've been doing it for, god, 35 years at that point."

According to Sixx , he was initially opposed to the idea of touring again with MÖTLEY CRÜE , especially since CRÜE fans who shelled out for the band's 2014/2015 "farewell" tour were led to believe that the group would never return after playing its final show on December 2015 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The band touted the signing of a pre-tour "cessation of touring" agreement as cementing the fact it truly was the end of CRÜE 's life on the road.

" Tommy [ Lee , MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer] does other stuff, and I do other stuff, and I remember getting the phone call from management, and I was, like, 'No,'" Sixx said. "And they go, 'You haven't even heard what I have to say.' And we were friends, and we were fine and everything's good. We're just like, 'No, it's a lot of work.' When you see the show out there, you're gonna go, 'Wow.' I mean, it's years of work putting it together, and then they were like, 'No, not eight arenas, eight stadiums,' and I was like, 'Let me call Tommy .'"

He continued: "I was like, 'Hey, dude, they're talking about us touring,' and he's like, 'No.' Because we wanted to be — stand by what we said, and then it was 16 and 36, which we just entered our 36th stadium, and there's, what, another 120 next year and the year after that, so, we're grateful we said yes."

CRÜE 's long-delayed North American trek with DEF LEPPARD , POISON and JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS was originally planned for 2020 and later moved to 2021 and then to 2022.

Earlier this month, MÖTLEY CRÜE singer Vince Neil said the band will continue touring internationally with DEF LEPPARD in 2023, through Mexico and South America in the spring and soccer stadiums in Europe next summer. Plans are for MÖTLEY CRÜE to return to U.S. for more shows in 2024.

In a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Sixx said "the most important thing about a farewell tour is that the band doesn't lie to the fans, and the band doesn't tour and then come back years later. That's what's important for us, planning what's the right time to go out."

Three years ago, Sixx said that "The Dirt" , about MÖTLEY CRÜE 's formative years, sparked a renewed interest from younger fans who wanted to see them live, contributing to the band's decision to renege on its infamous "cessation of touring" contract.

Vince Neil  recently assured fans that  MÖTLEY CRÜE   will continue to tour internationally, with plans to return to the U.S. in 2024.

“We’re far from being over,”  Neil  told  John Katsilometes  of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “When we come back in ’24, we’re going to do it all over again.”

Neil  also confirmed that there are talks of  CRÜE  returning for a third residency in Vegas, where they previously played a series of shows at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in 2012 and again in 2013.

“We have definitely talked about doing it, and everybody loves to do the residencies, so I say, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna do it,’”  Neil  said. “We just have to look at sometime in ’24, to be back in Vegas. But we will be back.”

He also said that band will only stick to touring and that there are no plans for new studio album.

“We are strictly a touring band,”  Neil  said. “When you see this show at Allegiant, you’ll see why. You’re going to see something that’s unbelievable, lights and lasers, three dancers. There are a lot of cool special effects, and a cool band putting on a rock show.”

DEF LEPPARD and MÖTLEY CRÜE’s Stadium Tour Earns $173.5 Million

def leppard tour earnings

According to Billboard , the Live Nation promoted Stadium Tour across North America throughout the summer headlined by Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe earned $173.5 million and sold 1.3 million tickets. That makes it the biggest tour of either band’s career, dating back to when Boxscore began collecting data in the late 1980s. Supporting acts included Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and Poison .

Hitting a career-high was inevitable, as it was both acts’ first run in stadiums. The hottest market on the co-headline tour was Boston, where a double-header at Fenway Park on Aug. 5-6 earned $9.3 million and sold 64,000 tickets. As for single-night earnings, they broke the $6 million threshold in Charlotte, N.C.; Denver; Glendale, Ariz; and Inglewood, Calif.

Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe are two of the most successful rock bands of the ‘80s and ‘90s but neither band has had a Billboard Hot 100 hit this century, and were averaging less than 5,000 tickets each around the turn of the millennium. So how did they join forces for one of the biggest tours of the year?

Their co-headline power proves that one plus one equals five-or-so, akin to the exponential effect of Green Day , Fall Out Boy and Weezer coming together on last year’s Hella Mega Tour . Both Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe had previously peaked as solo headliners in arenas and amphitheaters with 10,000-11,000 tickets per show on both sides of the Atlantic. The Stadium Tour averaged 37,520 tickets each night, hitting more than three times the audience that each band previously reached on their own.

Def Leppard experienced something similar on its last co-headline jaunt, breaking one million tickets alongside Journey in the summer of 2018. But despite playing nearly half the number of shows, this year’s Stadium Tour grossed almost twice as much, and pushed an additional 300,000 tickets. Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe toured together in Europe in 2011, but the limited reporting for that brief run shows $705,000 and 11,000 tickets in Manchester, less than a third the attendance and about one seventh the gross of the average show on their second go-around 11 years later.

Combined with increased attendance, surging ticket prices had something to do with it. The Stadium Tour ’s grosses, both nightly and total, far surpass any previous tour history by either act. On a proper headline tour, Def Leppard nor Mötley Crüe had averaged more than $1 million per show. But on The Stadium Tour , nightly earnings hit $4.96 million.

The other major factor of the post-pandemic touring landscape is perhaps the most obvious: time. The nearly two-year COVID shutdown raised anticipation for just about every musician to return to the stage, and then some for these two bands. Def Leppard played brief stints in Las Vegas and Canada in 2019, and with Journey in 2018, but not as a solo headliner since 2017. Further, it was the first time Mötley Crüe launched a tour in eight years, since the then-farewell run The Final Tour played from 2014 to 2015. That trek became the band’s highest grossing tour yet, but the $44.3 million total only hinted at the stadium magic to come alongside its glam-metal peers.

The forced break may have been the perfect accent to both bands’ slow resurgence over the last 20 years. Mötley Crüe was pacing 2,800 on the expansive Greatest Hits Tour in 1997-98 and crept up and up, passing 10,000 tickets on the Saints of Los Angeles Tour (2008-09) and 11,500 on The Final Tour . Def Leppard had a similar incline, boosted by more substantial co-headline stints with Heart , Whitesnake , and KISS . Increased capacity on this summer’s stadiums made for an obvious earnings boost. But the timing had to be just right in the grand arc of both acts’ careers to step up to bigger venues.

Dating back to reports from the late ‘80s, Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe have earned $730 million and sold 14 million tickets combined.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s annual holiday tour continued to be a major draw, as the Yuletide rockers — who ranked 36th on the chart — sold more than 767,000 tickets at 98 reported shows during their 2021 tour for a gross of $55 million.

The only other heavy metal or hard rock group included on Billboard’s chart — which ranked artists by gross income rather than the number of tickets sold — was Iron Maiden (No. 26),which grossed $76 million from sales of 985,000 tickets across 47 reported performances.

MOTLEY CRUE, DEF LEPPARD & POISON Break Records With The Most Profitable Tour Of Their Careers

According to  Billboard ,  MÖTLEY CRÜE  and  DEF LEPPARD ‘s  “The Stadium Tour”  sold 1.3 million tickets and earned $173.5 million, making it the biggest tour of either band’s career.

The biggest market on the tour, which featured support from  POISON  and  JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS , was Boston, where the four acts performed two concerts at Fenway Park on August 5-6 and sold 64,000 tickets for total earnings of $9.3 million.

“The Stadium Tour”  averaged 37,520 tickets each night, drawing more than three times the audience that each band previously reached on their own.

Earlier,  Nikki Sixx revealed how he was against the idea of reuniting Mötley Crüe for the massive “Stadium Tour” at first.

Speaking to Entertainment Online alongside drummer Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx said:

“It’s been unbelievable. I’m so grateful to be doing this, and it started, like, three years ago when the movie came out – two and a half years ago. We kind of, we broke up the band. We just decided to quit touring. We’ve been doing it for, god, 35 years at that point.

“Tommy does other stuff, and I do other stuff, and I remember getting the phone call from management, and I was like. ‘No.’ And they go, ‘You haven’t even heard what I have to say.'”

Earlier Nikki Sixx shared on his Instagram official page his favorite tour by far in decades.

“This moment. The moment I’ve experienced 1000’s times from playing small clubs to stadiums over the last 45 years of my life. The moment right before we hit the stage. I wish I could boil it down and pass it around in a shot glass for everybody. It’s high, it’s a meditative state, it’s rage, and it’s gratitude.

”All the work, all the songwriting, all the stage designs, all the band rehearsals, and all the joy of being in a band. The list goes on and on. God bless rock n roll. God bless the fans. Thank you. Who wants a shot of adrenaline? Bottoms up. Let’s do it again tomorrow night in Cleveland.

”PS: This is by far my favorite tour in decades, and Def Leppard is a joy to hang out with and do a co-headline tour together with.”

I saw Def Leppard on the pyromania tour, it was great. But I think this stuff is better left to those periods. These oldies but goodies tours are a joke. I can’t believe folks pay money for this.

Def Leppard ’s first two albums vaulted five boys from working-class Sheffield, England to the vanguard of the new wave of British heavy metal. On 1983’s Pyromania , the quintet set their sights even higher. “There’s no point in trying to appeal to half the population,” bassist Rick Savage tells Billboard . “Why not appeal to 100% of the population?”

Thirty Years Later, Pete Townshend on Why ‘The Who’s Tommy’ Is Still Capturing Rock n’ Roll’s…

Trending on billboard.

The album’s blockbuster success — which also eventually included a diamond RIAA certification for over 10 million units shipped — paved the way for the pop-metal crossover of bands like Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses and Poison, and set Def Lep up for a long, fruitful career. In 2022, the still-active band became only the third group to notch a top 10 album on the Billboard 200 in every decade since the ‘80s.

Ahead of the 40th anniversary edition of Pyromania (out April 26), Savage and frontman Joe Elliott hopped on a Zoom call with Billboard to pull back the curtain on the making of the classic — as well as share thoughts on a former CMT Crossroads collaborator who has since become the biggest pop star in the world.

Pyromania had the same producer, Mutt Lange, as the album that came out before it, High ‘n’ Dry . Even so, that one feels a bit rawer compared to Pyromania . Was it a conscious decision to give the album a cleaner production?

Joe Elliott: Yeah, that’s a good way of putting it. The obvious observations for those two records is that High ‘n’ Dry sounds like a band playing live and Pyromania sounds like a band in the studio — à la Pink Floyd, à la the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper — that sat down to craft some songs. They’re not just, “Okay, hit the record button and play it live.” That’s what High ‘n’ Dry sounds like — even though it actually wasn’t, because we did that in bits and bobs. But it has that impression.

Technology was starting to change. Recording studios in 1981 were pretty much the same as they were in 1979. Recording studios in 1982, ’83, there’s new bits of equipment coming in on a daily basis that can do things: synthesizers, drum machines. Drum machines were a big part of the music industry, with The Human League and New Order. We were using this kind of stuff, but most rock bands weren’t. And the great thing about having Mutt on your side is he’d be very enthusiastic about saying, “Well, why not? Why can’t a rock band…” and then fill in whatever phrase you want. It would be like [why can’t a rock band] “use that technology that these arty pop bands are using within the field of rock and see where it gets you”? We didn’t want to make High ‘n’ Dry 2 .

I was looking through the Billboard archives, and an article from 1984 postulated that a lot of Def Leppard’s appeal was connected to youth. Other metal acts at the time – Ozzy, Motörhead, whatever – were in their thirties, but you guys were a bit younger and maybe more attractive to girls. Is that something you were aware of back in the day?

We want to appeal to as many people as we can. There’s no point in trying to appeal to half the population — why not appeal to 100% of the population? All of a sudden, from Pyromania onwards, so many women and girls came to our shows. And it’s just testament to the actual songs, because they’re the things that get people first interested, and then everything else follows from that.

Elliott : We are a weird band in that respect, because we’ve always wanted to be honest with people. When you are five kids from Sheffield and you want to get up on stage and play rock music, there’s an oomph to it. It’s got a feeling that I don’t think — with the greatest respect to, say, the Human League, when we opened for them one night in their embryonic stage, they’re behind plexiglass sheets with keyboards. It doesn’t really have that Townshend windmill factor to it. It’s always fun to play the rock stuff, you know, “Highway to Hell” or “Tie Your Mother Down.”

But honestly, when we were in the factory rehearsing before we even played our first gig, we’d be talking about music way different than what we were playing. Me and Sav instantly bonded over the fact that we loved Kate Bush. Or the first two Peter Gabriel albums, which we were listening to way more than Motörhead. I don’t think Motörhead ever sat up a rehearsal room and had a discussion about “Wuthering Heights,” whereas we would. We always wanted it to be a glam rock, power guitar thing: Bowie, Slade, Sweet, Queen. That’s the fun element.

Savage : I don’t think so. It kind of happened in reverse. We weren’t really trying to market anything or become influenced by the latest media thing. We just got picked up from it, and we were fortunate in that respect. Before Pyromania was released, we knew that videos were coming to the fore. MTV was getting more and more popular, so it was just an obvious thing to do. We made two videos, one for “Photograph” and one for “Rock of Ages.” That was done in December of ’82, the album didn’t come out till early ‘83.

Elliott : Yeah, there’s no doubt that when we were making the album, the last thing on our mind was worrying about, “Oh, we got to make videos.” The one that really started to get a bit of traction was “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak.” In London, we’d start receiving the odd phone call from management in New York saying, “Oh, yeah, they played ‘Bringin’ on the Heartbreak’ 40 times on MTV last week.” “Okay, interesting.” Then you three weeks later you get another message saying that High ‘n’ Dry started selling again. Three weeks later, you get another message: “Bloody hell, it’s selling 50,000 a week.” By the end of the year, we’re getting this message that it’s gone gold, so we know that this is not going gold because the radio — it’s gone gold because of MTV. We were just getting little messages as we’re [making] the [ Pyromania ] album. It’s like a mosquito in your ear, like, “Yeah, okay, fine.”

As you were saying about youth, because we were all 21, 22 years old, when somebody says, “You got to spend a day in Battersea Power Station shooting videos,” you go, “Great.” We learned after the fact that a lot of seasoned bands from the ‘70s were reluctant to do them, which is why a lot of videos by bands from the ‘70s that were presented in the ‘80s were crap. I think the only band that really grasped the nettle when they came back with a resurgence was Aerosmith. Really, they did a brilliant job with videos. But lots of other bands were like, “I don’t see why we’re having to do this.” We were the next generation, and started to realize, “This is almost as important as making the record.”

Speaking of TV and “Photograph,” fast forward about 25 years. You’re on CMT Crossroads with a very young Taylor Swift singing that song. Did you ever think, “This person is going to become the biggest pop star in the world?”

Savage : She was pretty big then, to be honest. It was unbelievable that somebody had such youth, but almost like an old head on young shoulders when she came to songwriting. It was actually quite eye-opening. It was great fun; it was a bit of a laugh. She’s quite popular now, isn’t she? But trust me, she was pretty popular then as well. I mean, not to the level she’s at now, obviously — but within the country scene she was as big as they came. It was a really great experience working with her and the band. She had a great band back then as well.

What impressed me the most was that when we got to the table of like, which songs we’re going to do, she wanted to do a lot of [ Songs From the ] Sparkle Lounge . I’m thinking, “She’s heard that song?” And then “Two Steps Behind” got pulled out, which wasn’t going to be suggested, but she says, “I want to do that one.”

It’s all very logical and all very organic. It really was. I got to sing “Love Story,” bits from the perspective of a guy. She was really enthusiastic and obviously a big fan. And we became fans of her. I think we’d all be lying if we said we knew she was going to become as big as she has because she’s actually become bigger than anything that’s ever been before. She’s probably bigger than The Beatles and The Stones combined, for her generation of fans. I’ll probably get lynched by some 75-year-old reading this, but it’s all relative.

Today it’s all about the streaming numbers and all that kind of stuff. There’s been a lot of massively successful bands, but she’s taken success to a level that is unheard of. It’s absolutely mad. It’s success beyond anything that anybody could have ever dreamed of, probably her herself. I’ve seen the Eras film and it’s astonishing what she’s done. I hope she works with us again one day. [ Laughs. ]

I’ve read that “Rock of Ages” has a back-masked message of “F—k the Russians” on it. I wanted to ask if that was true, and if so, what inspired that.

Savage : [ Laughs. ]

Savage : The song is so sparse and open. We needed cues as guitar players as to when we’re going to come in because we didn’t have a vocal at the time. It was very easy to get lost in, because we’re just playing it to a drum machine. A lot of the stuff was there as cues to when the next part was coming up, of which “ gunter gleiben glauchen globen ” was one of them. It was much like saying, “1-2-3-4, here comes the bridge” sort of thing. So yeah, there was a load of stuff going down on that particular song, just to keep us interested.

Elliott : Yeah, absolutely. Like you said, this was born out of cabin fever, because this was the first time that we’d been in a studio doing 22-hour days, six days, maybe seven days a week and we’re probably into month six or seven so you start to go a bit ’round the bend. You start doing crazy stuff. People always mock rock bands for being silly, but I’ve read so many articles about what you might call sophisticated artists doing stuff just as stupid because they had cabin fever. The Beatles, Clapton, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, just doing goofy s–t in the studio because it relieves the tension, relieves the boredom.

Rick Allen Net Worth: $55 Million

Rick Allen Net Worth In 2022

Known as The Thunder God, Rick Allen is an English drummer who gained international fame as a member of the band Def Leppard .

Born on November 1, 1963, in Dronfield, Derbyshire,  Rick Allen  started playing drums during his childhood when he was nine. When he first picked up his drumsticks, the drummer fell in love with music and has never dropped them off. He developed himself on playing drums and kicked off his ongoing professional musical life when he was 15, in 1978, when his mother replied on his behalf to an ad that said Def Leppard was looking for a new drummer.

He is one of the most respected musicians in the community, as he has shown off his skills by playing one hand since 1985. After an unfortunate car accident, he lost his left arm and focused on playing one-handed. At the time, his bandmates helped him to play the same rhythms using one arm, designing him an acoustic and electronic drum kit.

However,  Rick Allen  has performed in the entire discography of  Def Leppard  since he joined the band. His contributions to the band, with his unique drum skills and style, have taken the band to another level.

However, as he is a huge part of  Def Leppard ,  Rick Allen received his income from his work with the band. Today in 2023, the net worth of Rick Allen is estimated at $55 million .

Born on December 8, 1957, in Hackney, London,  Collen  got his first guitar while celebrating his 16th birthday. He then started learning new skills in guitar playing. Years later, he mastered guitars and formed his band  Girl  to play music professionally. He became an important part of the band’s two albums and played notable venues during that period.

Phil Collen  joined  Def Leppard  after his band split back in 1982. In those years, the band was in the middle of the recording process for their third studio album,  Pyromania . Being the co-lead guitarist of the band,  Collen  has also contributed to the band with his songwriting.

Including his first appearance with the band,  Pyromania ,  Phil Collen  has performed in  Def Leppard ‘s ten studio albums in total. He also released two double live albums and a compilation album as a member of the band. In addition, he is the co-writer of the band’s hit songs  Hysteria ,  Gravity ,  Now , and  Everyday .

Out of his works with  Def Leppard  and  Girl ,  Phil Collen  appeared with many artists named Man Raze and Delta Deep.

However,  Phil Collen  received a considerable part of his wealth from his releases with  Def Leppard , as he has been a member of them since his early music life. When you ask what  the net worth of Phil Collen is, today in 2023, it is estimated at $25 million.

Alongside Rick Allen and Joe Elliott,  Rick Savage  is one of those members that has performed on every  Leppard album since the band’s formation. His income came from the band’s album sales, digital sales, and tour deals. Today in 2023, the bassist has a  $40 million net worth .

Vivian Campbell Net Worth In 2022

The Northern Irish guitarist  Vivian Campbell  is initially known for his tenure with the music legend  Dio . However, when he started his journey with Leppard in 1992, he replaced then-guitarist Steve Clark following his death. Since then, he has been continuing to play music as a member of the band.

The guitarist has contributed to Def Leppard since the band’s 1993-released compilation album,  Retro Active . While Slang marked his first studio effort with the band, his most recent album was the band’s latest studio album,  Diamond Star Halos.

During his musical career in music, Campbell worked with many great musicians, except for Def Leppard . Appearing on six different Dio albums, he contributed to Sweet Savage , Hear ‘N Aid , Whitesnake , Riverdogs , Shadow King , and more.

Vivian Campbell  got a part of his income from his contributions to  Leppard . Although he has been a member of them for about three decades, he has worked with famous artists before, as you can see above. So, as of January 2023, the net worth of Vivian Campbell is estimated at $25 million .

Joe Elliott Net Worth: $75 Million

He is one of those three band members who has performed entire releases since its existence. In addition, the musician has been keeping bringing creativity to the band with his distinctive and raspy singing voice.

In the past, Joe Elliott opened up about Def Leppard’s low income. According to Elliott, the band was making too low that “wasn’t even enough to buy stage clothes.” In 2018, he told Reuters that the band didn’t earn too much during its early years.

“We had signed a record deal in ’79, but that all that money went into running the band,” he said. “All the profit from the shows went into getting a tour bus, so we never saw a penny. “And when you spread that over seven years, it only worked out to a decent income, probably less than your average doctor.”

However, performed in every  Def Leppard  release,  Elliott  also released a couple of albums under the names of  Down ‘n’ Outz ,  Kings of Chaos , and  Cybernauts .

As of January 2023, his net worth is estimated at $75 million.
