As soon as you exit the baggage claim area, follow the signs for the metro. The Delhi Airport Metro Station is strategically located at Terminal 3. If you happen to land at Terminal 1 or 2, don’t fret. Regular shuttle services provided by Delhi Metro will ferry you to Terminal 3, where you can hop onto the Airport Express Line.

2. Destination Points:

The Airport Express Line directly links the Indira Gandhi International Airport and New Delhi City Center. It’ll whisk you away to the New Delhi Railway Station, passing through key stations like Aerocity, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi Aerodrome, and Shivaji Stadium. You can easily connect to other metro lines from the New Delhi Railway Station or hail a cab to your final destination.

3. Cost Comparison:

Now, let’s talk money. A one-way ticket on the Airport Express Line will cost around ₹60 to ₹120 , depending on the distance. In contrast, taking a taxi from the airport to the city center can set you back anywhere from ₹500 to ₹1,000, or even more, based on the time of day, traffic, and type of taxi. 

Apart from being pocket-friendly, the Airport Express Line is also a time-saver, taking a mere 20 minutes to reach the heart of the city. In Delhi’s infamous traffic, a taxi could take you upwards of an hour (or two, on particularly congested days).

4. Can You Take Luggage On The Delhi Metro?

The Airport Express Line trains are designed with travelers in mind. They have dedicated luggage racks, so you can stash away your bags and travel comfortably. However, just like any other metro around the world, it can get crowded during peak hours, so plan accordingly.

Pro Tip: If you’re staying in Aerocity, get down at the Delhi Aerocity station. It’s a hub of swanky hotels and eateries.

– How to Purchase: These can be bought at the Customer Care Centers of any metro station. You’ll need to pay a refundable deposit of ₹50 along with the desired credit amount. You can also opt for Tourist Cards, which offer unlimited travel for either one day (₹200) or three days (₹500).

– Using the Card: Simply tap the card on the sensor at the entry gate. The appropriate fare will be automatically deducted when you tap out at your destination.

– Recharging: Run out of balance? No worries. You can recharge the card at any metro station’s Customer Care or through TVMs. They also offer an online recharge option, which is handy when you’re on the go.

Pro-tip: If you’re here for over a day or two, invest in a smart card. Smart Card holders enjoy a 10% discount on fares; during non-peak hours, the discount is a whopping 20%. If you’re going to be traveling frequently, this card is a no-brainer.

Getting around in Delhi, India: A guide to the Delhi Metro

With a population of nearly 19 million people, New Delhi in India is one of the largest cities in the world – which means that getting around while you’re there can be quite difficult.

You can use a ride-sharing app like Uber, or take an auto rickshaw, yes, but because there’s so much traffic, those rides can take forever , which is why taking the Delhi Metro may be your best bet. Bonus: Hopping on the metro is also a great way to get to know the city, and it’ll save you money too.

So here’s everything you need to know about the Indian capital’s public transit system:

A Brief History

For starters, the metro system in Delhi is still relatively new; it opened in December 2002. One of the most important facts about it is that it’s the first railway system in the entire world to get a United Nations certification for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is huge for Delhi, and, as a result, locals are very proud of their metro.

The metro has eight main lines, divided by colour – red, yellow, blue, green, violet, magenta, and pink – plus an eighth one, the orange line, that goes directly to the airport. There are around 184 metro stations in total, both underground and above ground – but they’re all air-conditioned. That air conditioning factor certainly isn’t as big a deal as the United Nations certification, but it’s definitely up there, as Delhi heat is no joke.

Getting Around

As you may expect from such a sprawling railway system, there are a couple of key rules and guidelines that you should know before you go:

1. To buy a ticket, which is either a card or a token, you have to go to the ticket counter at every station. Generally speaking, tokens are best for one-way trips, and cards are better if you are a frequent traveller. You can also purchase a Special Tourist Card, which gives you an unlimited number of rides for a limited amount of days. A one-day Tourist Card is 200 rupees (150 rupees + 50 rupees for the card itself, though the card is refundable), and a three-day Tourist Card is 500 rupees (450 rupees + 50 rupees for the card itself, which, again, is refundable).

2. The fare is not a set rate. Rather, it’s based on where you’re going. Unlike cities like New York, which have a set rate for a subway ride no matter where you’re going, the Delhi Metro charges you based on your distance travelled. 3. If possible, try to avoid peak travel times, as the metro gets very, very crowded. Locals say that peak travel time in the morning is anywhere from 9 am to 12 pm, and in the evening, it’s anytime from 6 pm to 8 pm. Of course, avoiding the metro during these times may not be possible, so if that’s the case, just be prepared to be squished – and keep an eye on your bag.

4. Each train has about six to eight cars, one of which is reserved only for women. Although the metro system was opened in 2002, the women’s-only car only opened in 2010, as a response to sexual harassment complaints. Not surprisingly, though, as is often the case with gender-related initiatives, there is a bit of a debate in Delhi about the existence of the women’s-only car. Contrarians argue that it simply reinforces gender roles, whereas those in favour of the car say it’s a nice place to breathe and know that you will not be bothered by men. No matter where you stand on the debate, it’s good to know that there is one in the first place.

5. Your bag will be scanned before you board – and you can’t board at certain stations if your bag weighs more than 15 kilograms. Every metro station has an X-Ray scanning machine to check your bag before you board. And now, as of February 2018, you are not even allowed [italics] to board the Delhi Metro at more than 35 select stations if your bag weighs more than 15 kilograms. This rule has actually been in place since the metro opened, but it’s only now that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is actually enforcing it.

6. You aren’t allowed to eat on the train. That said, many, though not all, Delhi Metro stations have kiosks where you can buy coffee, tea, and local snacks. Some of the stations even have entire food courts filled with popular local and international chains where you can buy full meals. (Hot tip: Go for local chains like Khan Chacha and Cafe Coffee Day, and pass on the international chains like Domino’s… because you can do better than that.)

Using the Delhi Metro to Get to Your Hotel from the Airport

When the Delhi Metro first opened, there wasn’t a line that went directly to the airport, but all of that changed when the Orange Line – i.e. the line to the airport – opened in February 2011. Both locals and travellers alike really love the addition, because it cuts the journey down from more than an hour to around 20 minutes (give or take). The Orange Line runs from Terminal 3 and the new AeroCity hospitality precinct to New Delhi Metro Station (which is opposite the New Delhi Railway Station). Trains run nearly every 10 minutes, from around 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. every day, and the trip costs 60 rupees.

And that’s not all. In May 2018, the DMRC opened a new magenta line that goes to the airport too. While it’s not an express train like the Orange Line, it still gives you even more airport-to-hotel options. The magenta line has 16 stations total – many of which interchange with other lines – and operates from Terminal 1.

The Best Delhi Metro Stations for Sightseeing

One of the coolest parts about taking the Delhi Metro is that the metro itself is a sight to be seen. That said, you can also use it to get to other awesome tourist attractions too. Here are five solid stations that will place you right in the middle of the attraction action:

1. Chandni Chowk, on the yellow line This brings you to Old Delhi, which is total chaos but a must-see. You can walk to the Red Fort from here too. There’s tons of street food around as well, so be sure to sample some – and don’t miss Karim’s .

2. Rajiv Chowk, on the yellow and blue lines When you get off at this station, you’ll be close to Connaught Place, the commercial business and financial hub of Delhi that has heaps of markets and stalls. This is where you go to get all of the Indian trinkets you want.

3. Hauz Khas, on the yellow line Hauz Khas village is the hipster neighbourhood of Delhi. Expect to drink artisanal beer and quality coffee, visit artsy clothing and jewellery boutiques, and stroll through colourful, graffiti-covered alleyways.

4. Nehru Place, on the violet line It’s right by Lotus Temple, which is a house of worship constructed in the shape of a flower that’s one of the most popular attractions in Delhi.

5. Central Secretariat, on the yellow and violet lines Get off here to be close to the Indira Gandhi Memorial, Lodhi Garden, India Gate, the Parliament House, and more.

• Vijay Chowk - Vijay Chowk or 'Victory Square', a large piazza at the base of Raisina Hill, was planned as a commanding approach to the Viceroy's House, now the Indian President's residence. Vijay Chowk is flanked by two long, classical Secretariat buildings (the North and South Blocks), which house several ministries as well as the Prime Minister's Office.
• Lotus Temple (Bahai House of Worship) - Delhi's Baha'i Temple is an iconic piece of modern architecture that dominates the surrounding suburban sprawl. Twenty-seven spectacular giant white petals of marble in the shape of an unfolding lotus spring from nine pools and walkways, to symbolize the nine unifying spiritual paths of the Baha'i faith; each petal alcove contains an extract from the Baha'i holy scriptures. Set amid well-maintained gardens, the temple is at its most impressive at sunset. The lotus flower is a symbol of purity and spirituality throughout India, and Delhi's Baha'i Temple celebrates this in a unique architectural way. The Lotus Temple, as the Baha'i House of Worship is also known, is probably Delhi's most iconic modern holy site and one of the most visited places in the world. This lotus-shaped innovative structure is a world where silence and order prevail.
• Rashtrapati Bhavan - Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens as the British Viceroy's Palace, Rashtrapati Bhavan, situated at the crest of Raisina Hill, is now the official residence of the President of India.
• Jama Masjid - One of the world's largest mosques, whose three domes are visible from miles around. Don't miss the panoramic view from the south minaret. Visitors are welcome any time except during prayers.
• Chandni Chowk - Old Delhi's main thoroughfare, Chandni Chowk was once a sublime canal lined with trees and some of the most opulent bazaars in the whole of Asia. Today it is the heart of Old Delhi, a bustling area where religious and commercial activity mix easily. It is lined with shrines of various religions, including the fascinating Digambar Jain Temple.
• Red Fort (Lal Qila) - The largest of Old Delhi's monuments is Lal Qila, known in English as the Red Fort because of the red sandstone from which it was built. It was built as the main residence of the royal family. It's an important top attraction, and combines Indo-Persian architecture to perfection. Red sandstone battlements give this imperial citadel its name, Lal ('Red') Qila ('Fort'). The Red Fort remains a powerful symbol of Indian nationhood. Each night except Monday, a sound-and-light show takes place in the Red Fort.
• Lakshmi Narayan Mandir - Northwest of New Delhi GPO and directly west of Connaught Place, is a modern Hindu temple that also welcomes tourists. A fairly typical example of modern Indian temple architecture, with its marble entrance and ochre and maroon shikhars (spires), the Birla Mandir, as it is popularly known, has images of Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi in its main shrine. The main shrine is dedicated to Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, and her consort Narayana, aka Vishnu, the preserver of life.
• Connaught Place (CP) - This shopping complex, with its Palladian arches and stuccoed colonnades, was designed as a deliberate contrast to the noises and chaos of an Indian bazaar. CP it takes the form of a circle, divided by eight radial roads and three ring roads into blocks lettered A–N. The term Connaught Place originally referred to the inner circle, the outer one being Connaught Circus (now Indira Chowk). CP is crammed with restaurants, bars, shops, cinemas, banks and airline offices.
• India Gate - Anchoring a traffic circle near the far end of Rajpath from the Indian government, this massive sandstone arch commemorates soldiers of the British Indian Army.
• Rajpath - Running east of Vijay Chowk is Rajpath, a two-mile-long avenue used for parades, with ornamental fountains, canals and lawns on either side. This wide boulevard epitomizes the spirit of the British Raj.
• National Museum - The National Museum, just south of Rajpath, provides a good overview of Indian culture and history. Five millennia of Indian history can be explored at the National Museum, with a collection of more than 200,000 pieces of Indian art.
• Paharganj - North of Connaught Place and directly west of New Delhi railway station, Paharganj, centred around Main Bazaar, provides the first experience of the Subcontinent for many budget travellers. Packed with cheap hotels, restaurants, cafés and dhabas, and with a busy fruit and vegetable market halfway along, it's also a paradise for shoestring shoppers seeking psychedelic clothing, joss sticks, bags and oils of patchouli or sandalwood.
• Gandhi Smriti - The Gandhi Smriti is the house where the Mahatma lived his last days. Visitors can view an exhibition about his life, and follow in his last footsteps to the spot where he died.
• Lodi Gardens - A picturesque park located 2km west of Nizamuddin along Lodi Road and landscaped around some imposing 15th- century tombs. Lodhi Gardens is one of Delhi's most picturesque Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia parks, and a favourite haunt of joggers & yoga enthusiasts.
• Purana Qila - The majestic fortress of Purana Qila, literally 'Old Fort', stands on an ancient site that has been continuously occupied since 1000 BC, as archaeological excavations have revealed.
• Humayun's Tomb - Close to the medieval Muslim centre of Nizamuddin, Humayun's Tomb stands at the crossroads of the Lodi and Mathura roads. A prototype for the Taj Mahal, whose lovely gardens offer an escape from the heat. Humayun, the second Mughal emperor, is buried in this tomb, the first great example of a Mughal garden tomb, and inspiration for several later monuments, such as the incomparable Taj Mahal. Resting on an immense two-story platform, the tomb structure of red sandstone and white marble is surrounded by gardens intersected by water channels.
• Bazaars of Old Delhi - Old Delhi bazaars are legendary. An English visitor over a 100 years ago, wrote in praise of the 'Cashmere shawls, gold and silver embroidery, jewellery, enamels and carpets' found here. Today the great wholesale bazaars of Chandni Chowk still retain a souk-like quality. Their narrow streets are lined with shops, whose goods spill out onto the pavements.
• INA Market - This lively bazaar retains all the trappings of a traditional Indian market but also sells imported foodstuffs such as cheese, pasta and exotic varieties of seafood.
• Qutub Minar Complex & Mehrauli - The ruins of Delhi's first incarnation, a thirteenth-century city dominated by an impressive Victory Tower. India's highest single tower, Qutb Minar, marks the site of the first Muslim kingdom in North India.
• Nizamuddin Complex - A historic necropolis dedicated to the memory of various Sufi saints.
• Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple - One of the newest additions to Delhi's spiritual scene is Akshardham temple: a theme park of polytheistic Hinduism. This bulwark of pink sandstone and Italian marble - possibly the largest Hindu temple in the world - is undeniably dramatic. Set in landscaped gardens with a musical fountain, the temple incorporates traditional and craftsmanship as well as an IMAX film about the sect's founder.
• Raj Ghat - Ghats are steps that lead into the water of the Yamuna River. Ghats have been used in India for centuries, for mundane things like washing clothes and bathing, but also for worship and funeral cremation. Raj Ghat, east of Delhi Gate – really more a park than a ghat – is the place where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated.
• Gandhi Memorial Museum - Opposite Raj Ghat southwest corner, the small Gandhi Memorial Museum houses some of Gandhi's photographs and writings.

Getting around in Delhi city - Most of the areas of Delhi shown on our maps are best covered by the metro, taxi, auto-rickshaw or a hired car and driver. In contrast, the narrow lanes of Old Delhi are a walker's delight, though you can hop on a cycle rickshaw if you get tired. The challenge Delhi presents is to find areas—beyond the Old City—in which walking is a viable mode of exploration. One of these areas is the central British-built commercial hub, Connaught Place. 'CP' is a tourist magnet for its travel agent bucket shops, restaurants, and shops, as well as proximity to a number of mid-range and budget hotels. It's also the location of Delhi's main Metro station.

Using metro trains - The city's metro service is air-conditioned, reliable, and state-of-the-art. With new stations and lines opening for service every few months, subway service is rapidly changing the face of the city. It's a convenient way to move between Connaught Place (Rajiv Chowk station), Lutyens' Delhi (Central Secretariat station), and Old Delhi (Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazaar stations). For example, getting to Old Delhi from CP is three stops and takes about 15 minutes. The most popular lines are red, yellow, blue, green, violet, and the airport express, which links the airport with the centrally located New Delhi stop, which is close to the New Delhi railway stop. Maps are available at the official tourist office and often at your hotel concierge desk. The Rajiv Chowk station is massive; ask for directions as you go.

Navigating Delhi using our maps - India's capital has more sights than any other city in India, but they are concentrated in three distinct areas—Old Delhi, New Delhi, and South Delhi (known as the Qutb Minar Complex)—which should be tackled as separate tours (or at a push, two could be grouped together). The best way to cover a lot of ground in Delhi is to hire a car, especially if you're on a limited schedule. Avoid tackling Old Delhi on your first day if you've never been to India before—its startling chaos can be overwhelming. Starting with New Delhi will also give you a better idea of the aesthetic and cultural dichotomy between the two areas. A drive through the graceful avenues of the British capital will ease you gently into the capital, but don't let it lull you into a state of pleasant, orderly inertia. The rest of the city requires that all your senses be in working order. Depending on your interests, visit South and Central Delhi's monuments (Humayun's and Safdarjung's tomb, the Qutub Minar, Lodhi Gardens, Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah), some sites commemorating the leaders of India's independence movement (the Nehru Museum or Gandhi Smriti), a museum, or a temple or gurudwara (Sikh temple). When you're ready, plunge into Old Delhi—explore the Lal Qila (Red Fort) and the stunning Jama Masjid, then venture into Chandni Chowk. Make sure to eat at the famous Gali Paranthe Wali and the restaurant Karim's.

Orientation - Although Delhi is spread out, the areas of interest to travellers are relatively easy to navigate. In Old Delhi there’s the main Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) and, to the south, the New Delhi train station. Near this station, acting as a sort of buffer zone between the old and new cities, is Paharganj, jam-packed with cheap accommodation. New Delhi can be further subdivided into the business and residential areas around Connaught Place (the city’s core) and the government areas around Rajpath to the south. Running south from Connaught Place is Janpath, which has the tourist office, hotels and a shopping strip. The domestic terminals of the Indira Gandhi International Airport are 15km southwest of the centre and the international terminal is a further 8km away.

About Delhi - The vast urban sprawl of contemporary Delhi is, in fact, a conglomeration of several distinct enclaves, chief among which are Old Delhi, with its 16th- and 17th-century Mughal-built monuments and congested souk-like bazaars; and New Delhi with its wide avenues, grand vistas and Colonial mansions, built by the British in the 1930s as their imperial capital. New Delhi has government buildings and also houses the Diplomatic Enclave where all the embassies are located. The picturesque 12th-century ruins of citadels built by the first Islamic rulers can be seen in the Qutb-Mehrauli area, and the affluent new middle class suburbs of South Delhi lie close by. Slums and shanty towns dot the outer fringes of the city.

Old Delhi - Anchored by Lal Qila (the Red Fort) and Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, the walled Old City (originally called Shahjahanabad) provides the best glimpse into the city's treasured Mughal past, with a chaotic mix of colors and scents that stir the senses. Narrow, winding lanes branch off the main avenue, Chandni Chowk, crowded with wholesale markets, ancient shops, hidden monuments, and crumbling havelis (mansions).

Central Delhi - With the India Gate memorial at its heart, the capital built in interlocking circles by the British is now home to government buildings, parks, upscale markets, and the low-lying bungalows of the country's most powerful citizens.

South Delhi - The suburbs to the south of Central Delhi include semi-gated residential colonies, markets, and commercial districts. Here, too, are some of the oldest monuments in the capital, lovely parks, and charming locales such as Hauz Khas Village. It also has many of Delhi's can't-miss sites, including Humayun's Tomb and the Qutub Minar.

Seven Cities of Delhi shown on our maps - Delhi is said to consist of seven successive cities, with British-built New Delhi making an eighth. In truth, Delhi has centred historically on three main areas: Lal Kot and extensions to its northeast, where the city was located for most of the Middle Ages; Old Delhi, the city of the Mughals, founded by Shah Jahan in the seventeenth century; and New Delhi, built by the British just in time to be the capital of independent India.

Shopping in Delhi - The hallmark of shopping in Delhi is the bewildering variety of merchandise, markets and styles. Besides Connaught Place, almost every residential colony boasts a market. Old, established shops, bazaars and markets co-exist happily with glitzy, high-end boutiques and department stores and one can buy anything from seasonal fruits and traditional handicrafts to designer clothes and the latest imported electronic items. New Delhi's main shopping centres are in and around Connaught Place and Janpath where the state emporiums and Cottage Industries offer an exciting and varied range of textiles, jewellery and souvenirs at fixed and reasonable prices. In the north is Chandni Chowk, the traditional market, while to the south are Khan Market, Sundar Nagar and Santushti, the old urban villages of Hauz Khas, Shahpur Jat and Mehrauli, and Dilli Haat, a crafts bazaar on Aurobindo Marg.

Getting around the wider Delhi region - Delhi has good air, rail and road links to the rest of the region. There are daily flights to Leh, Srinagar, Amritsar and Chandigarh. Amritsar and Chandigarh are also connected to Delhi by fast trains and a National Highway.

Delhi Metro Map for Train Travel

The Metro is Delhi's ever-expanding local train network. It services Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh, and Ballabhgarh. The first line opened in 2002, and there are now nine lines in operation. The Metro is being constructed in phases, with the final phase IV remaining and expected to be completed by 2024.

What to Know

• The Red Line  was the first line to become functional, in December 2002. It joins northeast and northwest Delhi, from Dilshad Garden to Rithala. The entire line is elevated, and has 21 stations over 24 kilometers. It interchanges with the Yellow Line at Kashmere Gate and the Green Line at Inderlok.
• The Yellow Line  started operating in December 2004. It extends for 49 kilometers from north to south Delhi, and connects with the Rapid Metro in Gurgaon. Most of it is underground. This line is the second longest line on the Delhi Metro and has 37 stations. It interchanges with the Red, Blue and Violet lines, and also Old Delhi and New Delhi railway stations. The line connects with the Airport Express Line at New Delhi station as well. If you're interested in sightseeing, the useful Yellow Line covers many of the city's top attractions.
• The Blue Line  opened in December 2005 and is the longest line of the Delhi Metro. It extends for 50.5 kilometers, from Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida City Center (Sector 32), and has 44 stations. It connects with the Airport Express Line, and interchanges with the Green, Yellow, and Violet lines. It also has a branch line, from Vaishali to Yamuna Bank, with eight stations.
• The Green Line  is the shortest Metro line but it provides important connection to the Red and Blue lines for commuters traveling from west Delhi. It covers major commercial and residential areas including Punjabi Bagh, Paschim Vihar, Nangloi and Mundka. The first part of the line became operational in April 2010.
• The Violet Line  started functioning in October 2010. It's a useful line that connects central Delhi to the interior parts of south Delhi and the satellite town of Faridabad. The line runs for 35 kilometers and interchanges with the Blue Line at Mandi House, and the Yellow Line at Central Secretariat. An extension of the Violet Line, known as the Heritage Line, opened in May 2017. It provides direct access to Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid and the Red Fort in Old Delhi, and also join the Red and Yellow lines at Kashmere Gate.
• The   Airport Express Line   (Orange Line)  opened in February 2011. It connects New Delhi Railway Station to Delhi Airport. It terminates at Dwarka Sector 21, where it joins the Blue Line.
• The Magenta Line from Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden includes a stop at New Delhi Airport Domestic Terminal 1. It also has interchanges with the Yellow Line at Hauz Khas, Blue Line at Janakpuri West and Botanical Garden, and Violet Line at Kalkaji Mandir.
• The Pink Line is also called the   Inner Ring Road Line, as the entire line runs alongside Delhi's busy Ring Road. It started operating in March 2018 and extends from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar. It's the longest Metro line.
• The Gray Line opened in October 2019, and connects Najafgarh and Dwarka.
• The fully-elevated  Rapid Metro Line  connects Gurgaon with the Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro at Sikandarpur. Its first phase opened in November 2013. Trains run every four minutes from 6.05 a.m. until 10 p.m. Tickets cost from 20 rupees, and the ticketing system is integrated with that of the Delhi Metro.

Delhi by Metro | 15 tourist destinations in three days !

Delhi Metro, the country's largest metro system will take you to each and every look of the capital city with ease and comfort.

Delhi by Metro : There is no better way to travel in Delhi than by Delhi Metro, the country’s largest metro system will take you to each and every look of the capital city with ease and comfort. My visit to Delhi was for 3 days and the incredible metro network helped me to cover 15 tourist destinations and shopping hubs in such a short period of time.

Having arrived by flight, I took the Airport Express line of the metro from IGI Airport station in terminal 3 which brings you to the city centre in just 20 minutes. If you are arriving in Terminal 1 or 2, you can take the metro from the new Terminal-1 IGIA station (Magenta Line). I checked into my hotel in the morning at Paharganj, a busy market area that is filled with a number of hotels and restaurants attracting both domestic and foreign tourists. The neighborhood is advantageous for all tourists since it is situated in Central Delhi with its main bazar road having the New Delhi Railway station on its east and RK Ashram Marg Metro station on its west end. So, area suggestion for budget travellers: Paharganj!

The plan, metro and blog overview 

I visited Delhi for the first time this year for 3 days and slotted another day in between for Agra. The ideal time to visit Delhi is August-October and February-April so as to avoid the city’s extreme weather conditions.

Delhi Metro is one of the ten biggest metro systems in the world spanning over 300 km with 8 colour coded lines. If Phase IV expansion happens as planned, it will become the 3rd biggest metro system. Although it has eight lines, all the famous tourist attractions can be covered by the Yellow and Violet Line itself.

The entire blog has been written in a chronological order and all the locations are put-up in an order of comfort as it was planned and done after taking into consideration of all the locations, distances and the metro stations. The sub-headings are to be read as Time: Location Name – Metro Station Name (Metro Line Name). So, what are we waiting for? Let the journey begin!

The first day can be covered entirely on the busy Yellow Line that connects Samayapur Badli in North Delhi to HUDA City Centre in Gurgaon, south of Delhi.

11.00 am: Rashtrapati Bhavan – Central Secretariat (Yellow/Violet Line)

02.00 pm: Qutub Minar – Qutub Minar (Yellow Line)

Although the station is named after the monument, it’s a couple of kilometres away and you would have to take the bus or preferably an auto to reach the Qutab complex.  The towering minaret which was constructed storey wise by different dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate is only one of the principal attractions in the complex. The Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, an incomplete Alai Minar, the iron pillar of Delhi and a few other monuments constructed by various empires make you wonder about the importance of the area in Indian history.

05.00 pm: Tomb of Safdarjung – Jorbagh (Yellow Line)

A 5-minute walk from the Jorbagh metro station lies the Tomb of Safdarjung, the tomb of the finest statesman under the Mughal empire. The red sandstone and marble mausoleum are surrounded by a large garden and are one of the few less crowded tourist attractions in the city despite the monument being picturesque.

06.00 pm: Lodhi Garden – Jorbagh (Yellow Line) The road opposite to the Tomb of Safdarjung is the busy Lodhi road and a 10-minute walk along its tree-lined footpaths will take you to the Lodhi Gardens. The park which is now used by residents of New Delhi for walking was only created to landscape the tombs of Mohammed Shah and Sikander Lodi, an idea given by Lady Willingdon in 1936. Although the tombs here are not a great attraction that requires more than a look, take a break in the vast park as the evening breeze sets in before heading to the final spot for the day.

07.30 pm: India Gate – Central Secretariat (Yellow/Violet Line)

Head back to the metro station where the day began and walk down the Rajpath. If you are tired and wouldn’t prefer the 30-minute walk, take a bus directly from Lodhi Garden to India Gate. Designed by Edwin Lutyens, the memorial is for the Indian Army soldiers who died in World War 1 and the Third Anglo-Afghan War, the war memorial is best seen when it’s illuminated after sunset. The stillness beneath the memorial delivers a patriotic feeling, at least on your first visit.

Travel Tip: Make sure to get your entry tickets for all monuments from the ASI website with ease in one click thereby saving a lot of time on the trip by avoiding the long queues especially in the world heritage sites of Qutab Minar, Red Fort and Humayun’s Tomb.

The second day is going to be through another North-South corridor – Violet Line which connects Kashmere Gate to Faridabad in Haryana. A stretch of this metro line vowing to its historical locations has been named as the Heritage line. So, let’s hop on!

11.00 am: Red Fort – Lal Quila (Violet Line)

As you emerge out of the underground station, you are welcomed by the majestic red sandstone walls of the Red Fort – home of the Mughal dynasty for two centuries and was built by Shah Jahan. Despite the inside of the Fort containing several magnificent structures, remember these are only those that survived the plunder and destruction by Persian ruler Nadir Shah in 1747 followed by the British in 1857.

12.30 pm: Jama Masjid – Jama Masjid (Violet Line)

Jama Masjid is less than a kilometre away from Red Fort, either walk or just hop on the metro and get down at the next station. The moment you come out of the station, the atmosphere immediately transforms from a calm, less crowded metro station to a buzzing bazaar where you have to walk through the crowd with a slowly emerging view of the facade of the Masjid. The mosque was built by Shah Jahan in 1656 and was also the Mughal emperor’s last monument.

03.00 pm: Purana Qila – Khan Market (Violet Line)

Post lunch, get on the metro and head straight towards Khan Market Metro station and walk for 15 mins or take an auto to Purana Qila situated adjacent to the Delhi Zoo. Purana Qila is one of the oldest forts in the country, although the current form of the structure was built by Sher Shah Suri, there are also claims based on excavations that this could be the site of Indraprastha, the capital city of the Pandavas.  The fort also has a Baoli (step well) and the Sher Mandal – an observatory tower cum library built by Babur where Humayun fell to death.

04.30 pm: Humayun’s Tomb – JLN (Violet Line)

Take an auto from Purana Qila to Humayun’s Tomb, the resting place of the great Mughal emperor built by his wife Haji Begum. The complex is also referred to as the ‘Dormitory of the Mughals’ as a number of members of the Mughal family have been buried here, including Dara Shikoh, the first son of Shah Jahan who lost the succession battle to brother Aurangazeb. The Persian style architecture of the tomb along with its elegant Mughal styled gardens makes it a must visit place in the city.

06.30 pm: Nizamuddin Dargah – JLN (Violet Line)

A 10-minute walk down Lodhi road from Humayun’s Tomb will take you to the dargah (mausoleum) of Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya, one of the most famous Sufi saints of all time. The place will give an altogether different vibe, especially during the night hours. The famous Qawwali sessions that happen every Thursday are a must visit but unfortunately, it has been stopped for a while. The revered Sufi poet and musician Amir Khusrau, one of the finest disciple of Nizamuddin Auliya is also buried in the same vicinity.

Travel Tip: Most of the monuments in Delhi are closed on Mondays, so if your trip follows a weekend, make sure you head out and visit Agra.

10.00 am: Lotus Temple – Kalkaji Mandir (Violet Line/Magenta Line)

The Lotus temple, also the house of worship of the Bahai faith is a modern architectural marvel that also sees one of the highest tourist footfalls in the city. The lotus flower themed marble-clad attraction is a house of worship for the Bahai faith, although no ritual activities take place, all visitors are taken to the main hall, where one can choose to meditate or just be astonished by the pin-drop silence.

12 pm: Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum – Lok Kalyan Marg (Yellow Line)

Leaving the Lotus temple with a state of tranquillity, its time to get back on the all-time rush hour Yellow line before winding up the trip. The house-turned-museum of the former Prime Minister has a number of her belongings and photos that take you through her life and also of her family’s. The office-cum-library has been left untouched and is a highlight of the museum, the spot of her assassination is also marked on the outside. Although initially, I was reluctant to visit here due to time constraint, it was totally worth it.

03.00 pm: Chandni Chowk – Chandni Chowk (Yellow Line)

Post lunch, get on the yellow line and head to the buzzing Chandni Chowk, a Mughal era market which is now also one of the country’s biggest. The market not only has a name for shopping but also for its several iconic eateries including a number of Paratha shops in Paranthewali Gali.

04.30 pm: Jantar Mantar – Rajiv Chowk (Blue/Yellow Line)

LAST STOP! Rajiv Chowk! A 5-minute walk from Delhi’s busiest metro station will take you to city’s Jantar Mantar, one of the 5 observatories built by Maharaja Jai Singh. It is one of the very few ancient architectures surviving in the middle of an urban jungle. It takes some time for us to understand the science behind each structure with a lot of confusion but surely leaves you astonished by the knowledge in astronomy by the Maharaja and his people.

5.30 pm: Connaught Place – Rajiv Chowk (Blue/Yellow Line)

Connaught Place is the go-to-go hangout place for anyone from the city or visiting it. CP is just not the address businesses wants but also an architect’s fantasy, courtesy of Edwin Lutyens and a tourist’s most loved spot in the city, thanks to all the shopping spots and the restos including some iconic names like Keventers, Wenger’s Deli, just to name a few. Even just taking a seat in one of the benches facing the shops or the Central Park in itself gives a soothing pleasure and the mammoth metro station right under the park makes you grateful on how both British era and modern architecture has combined to make CP a wonderful place of what it is today. End of the trip!

Delhi is such a historic, finely planned and a well-connected place that makes it a must-visit city for all. Credits to the Mughals for the monuments they built, Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker for the planning of New Delhi and E. Dilwalo ki Dilli! That’s what people say about this charming city. One of the many things I like about Delhi is the many monuments and sites that represent the legacy of India. If you follow Delhi Metro Map, you should be able to see most of these attractions by using the great connectivity of the Delhi Metro.

In addition, there are many hangout spots where you can have a good time! Among all the cities in India, Delhi has the most efficient mass transportation infrastructure. The public transportation mostly comprises of the widely spread Metro. What Mumbai hasn’t been able to do for ages, Delhi did it pretty effectively.

So let’s see how can you use Delhi’s Metro Network to visit key attractions in the city. This post will help you to figure out which metro line should work best for you if you want to see the most famous attractions in Delhi!

Metro Route Network in Delhi-NCR

Delhi is a sprawling metropolis and the capital of India. Culture, architecture, history, natural beauty, luxury, shopping, power, government or parties – Delhi has it all. The capital of the world’s largest democracy, Delhi is incomplete without its rapid transit system – The Delhi Metro.

Looking at the Delhi Metro map, you can see that it covers 350+ km and 250 metro stations, is among the most extensive metro systems in the world, and offers a world-class experience.

It provides a convenient form of transport to 55 lakh passengers every day, which translates to over two billion people per annum! The Delhi Metro network has nine color-coded lines catering to designated routes. Tourists can use the lines to travel along the route and use local transport for sightseeing. The view from the metro itself is a pleasure to look at.

There are a total of 8 lines in Delhi Metro; Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Violet, Orange, Magenta & Pink. Each Metro connects a certain part of Delhi to another and if you want to visit an attraction, there should be a close by metro station. If you know the station and the line, you should be able to easily navigate the transportation labyrinth of Delhi Metro.

Before we get in-depth about various Lines and famous attractions along the Delhi Metro stations, I’d like to recommend getting a Metro pass. It’s not only cost-effective but also super convenient.

It’s Smart to Get a Metro Pass in Delhi

Taking a metro pass (smart card) will make your journey easier as well as pocket-friendly. There’s no need to stand in the token queues at every single stop. One-day pass costs Rs. 150 (Rs. 50 refundable security) and you can use it for unlimited travel. Similarly, a three-day pass costs Rs. 300 (Rs. 50 refundable security). These passes are contactless cards, and you can quickly swipe it at the entry and exit gates.

Get yourself a handy Delhi Metro map and following one metro line in a day would be convenient since you wouldn’t have to switch stations.

Yellow Line Metro Route Delhi

Along the Yellow Line Metro Route are some of Delhi’s most popular places and metro Stations.

1. india gate – central secretariat metro station on the yellow line route.

India Gate is at walking distance from the Central Secretariat metro station on the yellow line. It is India’s most prominent war memorial. Apart from the monument itself, there are great street food vendors around the area to tantalize your taste buds.

2. Rashtrapati Bhavan – Central Secretariat Metro Station on the Yellow Line Route

Rashtrapati Bhavan is directly opposite India Gate, and Rajpath connects the two. While you may not be able to traverse the Rajpath, walk, or take an autorickshaw to the President’s house. Visit before sunset to see the Bhawan lit with beautiful colored lights. Rajpath is the area where the Republic Day parade is held every year.

3. Dilli Haat – Interchange Stations between Yellow Line & Pink Line at INA Metro Station

Dilli Haat is a crafts market and open-air food plaza run by the Delhi Government. It is undoubtedly the best food place to visit for shopping traditional content and pleasing your taste buds with tasty street food. You can buy state-specific crafts here.

4. Qutub Minar – Qutub Minar Metro Station on the Yellow Line Route

The Qutub Minar has a metro station dedicated to its name and those who appreciate history may want to visit the monument.

Looking at the Delhi Metro map, we can see that this line has about 50 stations and stretches from Dwarka to Noida.

• Connaught Place is one of the most admired places in Delhi. Also known as CP, this area is brimming with youth and foreigners. There are restaurants, brand shops, pubs, and businesses. Connaught Place is circular and at the center lies Palika Bazaar, one of India’s best bazaars. This is a must-visit if you like bargaining. CP can be reached through Rajiv Chowk or Barakhamba Metro Station. The ideal time to visit CP is in the evenings when the entire area is bustling with activities. After 11 PM, you can enjoy the nightlife.
• Karol Bagh is an ancient market and is known for garments, food, and a big grey market. Street food lovers may want to visit this market to try out some funky snacks. Popular for wedding shopping and jewelry showrooms, this place would delight the fairer gender. Bank Street is the place you should be looking for if interested in jewelry. The grey market, also known as the Ghaffar market, has imported materials – shoes, clothes, electronics, stationary and cosmetics. We warn you though, it is very congested.

• Akshardham Temple is a must-visit in Delhi. Built on a vast area, this extensive temple is magnificent. Full of finely worked white marble, this is a place where you can seek not only Gods’ blessings but also enjoy a laser and fountain show in the evening. The temple is 43 meters high and is entirely constructed from Pink Sandstone and Carrara marble.

• Get off at the Kalkaji Mandir metro station to visit this temple. The biggest attraction near this station is the Lotus Temple. Having the flower’s shape and surrounded by beautiful lakes and small pools of water, this is one of the most beautiful monuments in Delhi. You will be amazed by the cleanliness inside the area. Hire an auto rickshaw or an Uber to roam around.

• Nehru Place metro station is another exciting area. With a charming food court built inside the station itself, you can relax right after getting off the metro. Once you step out, just across the road is Nehru Place which is a business hub and also one of the largest computer markets in Asia. Everything related to computer hardware can be found here.

• South Extension is hot and hit place to visit. This is one of Delhi’s posh areas, and you’ll find luxury showrooms and shops around here. If you want to splurge on branded clothes, this is the area for you. There are luxury malls around; you may hire an Uber to roam around the place. This place is suitable for youngsters. This place is full of groups of people walking and exploring the area.

• Lajpat Nagar is a popular destination and a cloth market. If you’re looking forward to going on a cloth-shopping spree, Lajpat Nagar is the area for you. You may walk and explore the place. If, however, you need to traverse a significant distance, you may want to hire an autorickshaw.

Changing Lines

There are junction states from where you can swap lines. Download the Delhi Metro app and use the Delhi Metro map to get to the station you want.

Overloaded Trains

During weekdays, trains may be overloaded with office and college-goers. It is okay to skip a train or two to find a relatively empty train.

There are many other places that Delhi can offer you. Here are some of the other sites you can visit

National Rail Museum: This is one of the coolest places to visit. Kids will enjoy this place. There are over a hundred exhibits of trains, locomotives, engines and signaling equipment. It is also educative for kids.

Rajghat : This is the cremation place of Mahatma Gandhi. Many people visit to pay homage to the Father of the nation.

Garden of Five Senses: This is located on the Mehrauli Badarpur Road and can be reached from the Badarpur metro station. It offers a combination of colors and fragrances. The park spreads over 20 acres and is developed by the Delhi Government as a place of leisure for the locals.

Hauz Khas Village: This, too, has a metro station dedicated to its name and you may visit this place late evening for the pubs and the nightlife. This is a mix of 14th-century tombs and monuments combined with the modern pub culture and fashion boutiques.

Local transport in Delhi

While the metro network is wide enough to get you to the most exciting areas in the national capital, for smaller distances, you can hire an autorickshaw or a manual rickshaw puller. Uber and Ola are readily available, and you can find your ride within fifteen minutes.

• The Blue Line, a veritable chameleon, stretches from Dwarka in the west to Noida in the east, connecting a kaleidoscope of neighbourhoods along the way. In Dwarka, you can explore the seaside temples .

Interchange Delights

With 10 lines and 242 stations (and counting!), navigating the Delhi Metro can seem daunting. But fret not, for the network is designed with interchanges in mind. These are stations where you can seamlessly switch between lines, often with just a short walk across the platform. Information

Delhi Metro is an urban Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) built with 10 lines and 254 stations to serve India’s capital along with other towns in the National Capital Region (Gurgaon, Noida and others) by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Construction for its 65.1 km Phase 1 started in 1998 and ended in 2006. Its first section to open was the Shahdara – Tis-Hazari section of the Red line, in 2002. Construction on the 124.93 km Phase 2 was completed in 2011, while construction on the 162.495 km Phase 3 project was completed in 2023.

DMRC began the bidding process for the construction of the 65.1 km (and growing) Phase 4’s new lines in mid-2019, and work on its first section started on December 30, 2019. When Phase 4 is completed in 2027 (estimated), Delhi’s metro network will become approximately 450 km long. Additional phases have not yet been formally planned or announced.

Delhi Metro Fare Chart (Ticket Prices)

Fares on the Delhi Metro are calculated based on distance traveled and dependent on type. Fares were last revised on October 1, 2017 based on the suggestions of the 4th Fare Fixation Committee setup in May 2016.

• RFID Token (best for single one-way journeys) – Minimum fare is Rs. 10 and maximum is Rs. 60.

• Smart Card (best for multiple journeys) –  minimum amount payable at the time of purchase of a new card is Rs 150, which includes a refundable security deposit of Rs. 50. Users can subsequently recharge/load a minimum of Rs. 200 up to a max of Rs. 3000.

• Tourist Pass – 2 types available for travel on all lines except the Airport Express Line. (1) 1 Day Unlimited Rides Card : available for Rs 200 (Rs 150 + Rs. 50 refundable security deposit) (2) 3 Day Unlimited Rides Card: available for Rs 500 (Rs. 450 + Rs 50 refundable security deposit)

As of March 2019, DMRC operated a total of 2214 coaches (1352 broad gauge and 862 standard gauge). In June 2021, DMRC invited tenders for procuring another 288 coaches for Phase 4.
