Because of its proximity to Denver, Eldora can get busy during peak weekends. Early morning and weekday trips are a perfect time to experience the area in all its luster – crowd free.

Getting to Eldora

Eldora is about 50 miles from metro Denver in the foothills southwest of Boulder. Eldora Mountain serves up 700 skiable acres and has more than double the vertical drop of Echo Mountain, another nearby resort.

The base lodge has a few essentials, but you’ll need to pack some heftier snacks or stop off at Georgetown, a few miles east of the resort along I-70. You’ll pass Georgetown on your way from Denver to Loveland. It’s an excellent place to fill up on gas, grab a meal or pick up other stuff you need. Through the tunnel, a few miles west, Silverthorne also has plenty of food options. Silverthorne is also known for its extensive outlet shopping.

Getting to Loveland

Located about 55 miles west of Denver along I-70, the ski resort presents breathtaking skiing above the well-traveled Eisenhower Tunnel. While cars pass through the mountain, skiers feast on heavy powder from mid-October through mid-May.

3. Arapahoe Basin (60 miles from Denver)

Even though the resort is smaller than some major state resorts, it’s still easy to make fresh tracks on untouched terrain every day of the season.

Arapahoe Basin is a haven for intermediate and advanced skiers who want to push the envelope. There is no fancy base area or other attractions – it’s all about skiing and good vibes. The resort has one of the longest ski seasons in Colorado and some of the highest skiable terrain to boot. The best part is that you can ski A-Basin from late October through late June (or even longer).

Getting to Arapahoe Basin

To get to Arapahoe Basin, take Interstate 70 west, turn south on Highway 9 just before the Eisenhower Tunnel, and take Loveland Pass to A-Basin. Keep an eye on the local weather because Loveland Pass can close during inclement weather, and you’ll have to make a considerable detour. Dining and amenities are sparse at the resort, but you’ll find everything you need further down Highway 9, Silverthorne, or Georgetown.

Getting to Winter Park

Winter Park’s convenience to the Mile-High City is two-fold. First, it’s an easy 65-mile drive from Denver along Interstate 70 before turning on Highway 40 shortly after Idaho Springs. There is beautiful scenery along Highway 40 on the way to Winter Park.

If you don’t feel like driving, you can take the Winter Park Express train from Union Station in downtown Denver directly to the base village at Winter Park. The Winter Park Express runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from January through late March. The comfortable train has comfy seats and a relaxing Lounge Car for drinks and snacks during the ride. Taking the Express directly to Winter Park is the best way to avoid bad weather, crowds, gas and parking. (Tickets are required.)

Night skiing is one of the more popular draws at Keystone, as only some resorts offer that unique feature. Keystone has some of the most extensive night skiing in the state. Denver is picturesquely set along the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and allows easy access to some of the best ski resorts in Colorado . In fact, you can actually fly in from many major cities across the US and Canada and be on the slopes the same day. Denver is a central hub for several airlines, and connections are excellent from just about anywhere.

The ski resorts near Denver are clustered in three main geographical groupings based on distance from Denver. The first group is found in the front range, and are the closest ski resorts to Denver . These are Winter Park, Echo, and Eldora. The next set includes Keystone, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin, Copper, and Loveland. The third, beyond the Vail Pass , are the ski resorts of Vail and Beaver Creek, home to some of the best skiing near Denver.

Options for accessing the resorts include self-drive, ride-sharing (but make sure you have the return trip booked), trains, shuttles, and buses.

If you drive, one of the things to consider when choosing a place to ski is what kind of conditions you are comfortable driving in and the ability of your vehicle. The Vail Pass is an area that frequently gets severe mountain weather, and you need to be prepared to handle the inherent challenges of tough winter driving.

Just because a resort is closer to Denver doesn't make it less appealing, in fact, quite the opposite is true. The resorts closest to Denver can be quite large (Winter Park), get the most snow (Loveland), or be small and funky (Echo Mountain). The world-class places like Vail and Breckenridge do require an investment in driving time but are worth the effort for the variety and resort experience.

The final consideration on which resort to choose may come down to budget. The resorts closest to Denver tend to be cheaper places to ski than those further afield, especially compared to those resorts in the Vail corridor.

Tell any group of skiers that you are heading to Vail for a week of skiing, and you'll instantly notice their scowls of envy. These scowls are a natural reaction because they know you'll be heading to one of the best ski resorts in the world .

Vail Resort is big, and as a result, there's something for everyone. Long blue cruisers, wide-open easy greens, incredible bowls, tree skiing, and thigh-busting mogul runs are spread out over several mountains.

This resort has 34 lifts, including two gondolas, and has recently invested in upgrading several quad chairs to six-seaters. Vail has installed two new chairs: a six-seater replaces the old Game Creek Express quad, and a brand new quad chair called Sundown near Chair 5.

February and March are some of the best snow months, but don't be too concerned about coming at these times, Vail averages 29 feet of snow a year.

Vail has installed an advanced snowmaking system high up on the mountain over the past few years and it has had the intended result of moving the early season base area 2,000 feet higher to the mid-mountain area. At Mid-Vail, the air is colder, and the snow starts to naturally accumulate early, and with the new snowmaking, it now increases even faster.

Skiers will be pleased to know that this has moved up the opening day of the resort to mid-November, Vail's earliest-ever start date. You will still need to download on the gondola at the end of the day, skiing to the base is not possible until later in the season.

Off the slopes, Vail has one of the best-developed base areas in the entire USA. A long winding road through the village takes you past beautiful resorts and countless restaurants with the requisite patios. Looking for some new ski gear? Countless retail shops will be happy to accept your hard-earned cash for the latest styles.

Vail is less than 100 miles from downtown Denver , and it usually takes about an hour and 40 minutes to drive here without traffic. From Denver International Airport, it is about 120 miles, and generally a two-hour drive.

If you love cruising down immaculately manicured ribbons of corduroy snow, you'll be smitten with Beaver Creek. Located 20 minutes past Vail , Beaver Creek is a different kind of ski resort. It's more about enjoying skiing than racking up incredible vertical.

Perhaps the first signs of this are the escalators that take you effortlessly to the base area, or the offers from friendly resort staff to carry your skis as you step off the ski bus.

All that said, do not underestimate the terrain at Beaver Creek. Lots of challenge awaits if you seek it out. Evidence of this is the fact that Beaver Creek hosts men's and women's Alpine World Cup downhill races on a regular basis.

Beaver Creek receives an average of 27 feet of snow each year and with 23 modern lifts, you'll be whisked right back to the top to enjoy an endless loop until you tap out. The resort opened two brand new high-speed quad chairs in the beginner/intermediate McCoy area recently, and the additions have become the new favorite rides of Beaver Creek's legions of intermediate skiers.

Beaver Creek has a cute alpine village at the base of the lifts chock-full of restaurants, shops, and galleries. Should you wish for some fun family evening activity, rent some skates and take a few twirls on the ice rink in the center of town.

About a 1.5-hour drive from Denver , Breckenridge, or Breck as it's known locally, is a resort that you'll want to keep coming back to. The resort is spread out over five mountains and boasts the highest chairlift in North America , topping out at an amazing 12,840 feet.

The lower areas of Breckenridge have gentle inclines and are blue- and green-run heaven. Perfect for families and those learning to ski, these areas are wide-open and easy. Farther up the mountain, the runs get a bit more challenging as you ascend, and some of the tree and bowl skiing is for those who crave adrenaline-pumping adventure.

Snow is plentiful here; just over 30 feet of the white stuff falls on average each season. Breck manages to hold onto its snow quite late in the season, and spring skiing here is legendary. At this time of year, it will be fluffy at the top and sugar snow at the bottom, a true test of your skiing abilities.

Uphill capacity is also impressive: 35 lifts can move approximately 50,000 people up the slopes each hour, meaning lift lines are rarely an issue. The new Freedom SuperChair installation has gone a long way towards alleviating the crush at the Independence SuperChair and the replacement of the old double on Rip's Ride to a high-speed quad has boosted capacity by 70%.

More great skier news, the 5-Chair has been transformed into a new, high-speed quad and a new name: the FIVE SuperChair. Now Peak 8 is entirely serviced by high-speed equipment making for more laps and huge vertical.

The town of Breckenridge is a true town, unlike other base areas. It has a mining history and is full of things to do, as well as great shops and restaurants. On one of the 300-plus sunny days, walk through the restaurants to the back patios. Here, you'll be able to soak up the sun and watch the skiers descend the slopes as you chat about your skiing.

• From Denver to Breckenridge: Five Best Ways to Get There

Keystone is in the same general vicinity as Breckenridge, and it takes about an hour and twenty minutes to drive there from Denver .

Long cruisers spread out over three mountains are what you'll find at Keystone. This resort gets nearly 20 feet of snow each year and has an impressive uphill capacity through a network of 21 lifts, including a gondola.

The resort is laid out in an easy, hard, hardest manner. The farther back you go, the harder the terrain gets. Outback Mountain is the domain of strong skiers with a mix of steep cruisers, tree skiing, and knee-crushing moguls. North Peak Mountain is a bit more forgiving, with a similar assortment of runs, just not as hardcore. Dercum Mountain is for beginner or early intermediate skiers, or for those who just want to cruise easy runs all day long.

Skiers will notice the big change in the Bergman Bowl, with 16 new runs and a new, shiny high-speed quad chairlift. The new chair opens up 555 acres of previously inaccessible terrain and makes getting to gnarly terrain in the Independence and Ericson bowls much easier. Another improvement on the mountain is the expansion of the Timber Ridge Lodge to now include more seating and an incredible outdoor deck with Pano-views of the surrounding peaks.

If after exploring all three mountains throughout the day you still want more, night skiing is available. Hardcore skiers can also go CAT skiing.

Don't just jump in your car and head back to your hotel or hometown after your day on the slopes - you'll miss out on the fun après ski. Keystone Village is a lively spot, with lots of restaurants featuring patios ideally situated to catch the sun. Grab a chair and regale your ski partners with tales of your skiing expertise, or showcase your bruises from a tremendous crash.

Only 67 miles from Denver , Winter Park offers some of the closest skiing to Denver and is easy to get to. The resort averages over 27 feet of snow each year. All this glorious white stuff is spread out over 3,000 skiable acres. Long groomers, tree runs, extensive beginner slopes, and six terrain parks greet skiers and riders.

A fun and lively base area is just perfect for après ski. This area has winding streets with wood-framed buildings full of interesting shops and restaurants.

The 30 million dollars of new infrastructure investments in the past two years have paid off handsomely at Winter Park. The upgraded chairlifts whisk skiers to the top even faster, and the completely renovated Sunspot Mountaintop Lodge is now a place that makes skiers want to linger and enjoy the view. The latest addition to the mountain is the Wild Spur Express chairlift. This state-of-the-art high-speed six-passenger provides access to the advanced and strong intermediate runs on Vasquez Ridge.

Winter Park is also expanding their food and beverage offerings. The new Sundog Tap Room may become your go-to spot to refuel and refresh with its impressive dining and self-serve beverage offerings. For those that want to grab a bite and keep going, the resort is planning four pop-up restaurants located at the new Wild Spur Express lift, the bottom of the Olympia lift, the Mary Jane base area, and another just outside Lunch Rock at the top of the Super Gauge lift.

If you don't feel like driving or don't have a car, take the train. An Amtrak double-decker train service runs every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from Union Station in downtown Denver. The train service starts running in mid-January and ends in mid-April.

Copper Mountain is easy to spot on your left as you ascend to the Vail Pass. This resort has an extensive variety of over 140 runs that range from family-friendly green runs right through to steep and deep trails that will have your heart pounding.

A large base area contains three villages: Center, East, and West. Center has the majority of the restaurants, shops, and other retail establishments, providing anything else you may need before or after your ski day. Copper has extensive parking areas, making it ideal for day-tripping from Denver. The drive takes about an hour and 20 minutes .

Copper receives, on average, 25 feet of snow a year, and to supplement the natural stuff, 364 acres of snowmaking is installed at key points on the hill. The resort has 24 lifts, including an eight-passenger gondola.

From Denver, you can reach Arapahoe Basin in about an hour and 15 minutes.

Known for having the longest ski season of all Colorado resorts, Arapahoe Basin, or A-Basin as it's more commonly referred to, starts early and finishes late. It's located up high along the Continental Divide, and what this resort lacks in modern base village amenities, it makes up for with wide-open skiing with spectacular scenery.

You'll be skiing at an elevation of between 10,500 and 13,050 feet, so be prepared for a bit of lightheadedness if you are coming from the flatlands. The snow up here is some of the best in Colorado. While the snow at other resorts is turning to slush in the spring, at A-Basin, it's still light and fluffy. In fact, Arapahoe gets nearly 30 feet of snow each year, so those secret stashes just get deeper and deeper.

From Silverthorne, Arapahoe Basin is on the same road as Keystone. You could easily ski both resorts in the same day.

Arapahoe is part of the IKON Pass program and the Mountain Collective Pass program.

Sitting atop the Continental Divide like a huge baseball glove, Loveland captures any snow that might think about falling in this area. The resort gets an incredible 35 feet of snow a year, more than any of the resorts in this area.

This is a smaller, more casual resort that has a strong and loyal following of die-hard skiers. Loveland is unique in that beginners have their very own area, called Loveland Valley. This is an ideal place to learn how to ski without the fear of someone racing by you.

Although the resort is small, with 94 runs serviced by 11 lifts, the terrain is suitable for every skill set. The Ridge area is especially suited for those who like to ski in deep, fresh snow in a wide-open bowl.

Lift #6 has been replaced with a new fixed-grip triple chair and although skiers would have preferred a high-speed lift, it's better than what used to be there by a large margin.

One bonus at Loveland is the ability to go CAT skiing for free with Loveland's Ridge CAT.

Loveland is also affordable; lift tickets here cost less than nearby resorts, and parking is free. The resort is only 53 miles from Denver on I-70 and is the first resort you see.

A mere 47 miles from Denver , Eldora gets you out of bed and on the slopes fast. Spread out over 680 acres, the resort has a mix of beginner, intermediate, and lots of advanced terrain. About 20 percent of the mountain is classified as double black diamond.

Eldora is also a great place for snowboarding. The mountain is home to a Woodward facility and has eight parks spread across the slopes, each featuring jumps, rails, and other crazy stuff. The mountain has 10 lifts, including one six-person high-speed chair.

Eldora receives 25 feet of snow each year and has snowmaking on the entire mountain.

If you are looking for a small ski hill that's relaxed and chilled out but still a good time, Echo Mountain fits the bill. And, it's less than an hour's drive from Denver .

Just one triple-chair and two conveyor-style lifts service 13 runs, but that's part of the appeal. The runs are primarily intermediate, with a few greens for beginners and a bit of tree skiing for the more adventurous. The resort gets on average about 23 feet of snow a year.

Echo Mountain is a fun place to ski, and the entire mountain is outfitted with sound, so you'll get extra inspiration while carving your turns. The resort also offers tubing (reservations required) and night skiing.

The mountain also has a unique take on ski instruction. They don't have a typical ski school with hourly group lessons, instead, they offer Ski Ambassadors. These friendly and helpful expert skiers and boarders are on the hill and willing to offer you tips and pointers to help with your technique. The best part? They are free! (That said they aren't averse to free stuff in the lodge if you are buying).

With Colorado being home to the Rocky Mountains it’s no surprise that the state boasts some of the world’s best ski resorts. What may surprise visitors though is how close Denver is to the world-class skiing that Colorado is known for.

We’ve compiled a list of twelve magnificent ski resorts, all of which are within a two-hour drive of the heart of the Mile High City . They all make for an incredible skiing or snowboarding experience. Most share access via Interstate 70 west of Denver, so there’s some driving competition.

Access to the slopes is still far quicker from Denver than from Colorado Springs, which is two hours vs less than an hour from Denver. Many of the ski resorts nearest Colorado Springs are still closer to Denver, except for Monarch.

Ski Resorts Within 2 Hours of Denver, CO

Drive times into the mountains from the city can shoot up starting Friday afternoon, as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings during the winter, so plan to head up on a weekday if at all possible. The drive home to the front range metro on weekends is also horrendous, especially vexing on Sunday nights. There are limited ways to avoid I-70, with Eldora being one of the only options.

Echo Mountain Resort – 36 miles / 50 min

Echo Mountain is easily the smallest resort on our list, but it’s also the closest to Denver. Located just south of Idaho Springs , Echo Mountain is only about an hour from downtown. The resort has only one chair lift and 9 runs, so don’t expect to be able to explore new terrain all day as you can at some other Colorado resorts.

Having said that, Echo Mountain is much more reasonably priced than other resorts and the terrain is specifically geared toward beginners. If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding and are looking for a way to test the waters then Echo Mountain is a close and reasonably priced option. Plus they have night skiing , one of only a select few resorts to offer skiing after dark.

Loveland Ski Area – 56 miles / 1 h

Loveland Ski Area sits high atop the Continental Divide right where I-70 cuts through the top of the Rocky Mountains at Eisenhower Tunnel. A little over an hour from Denver, Loveland features nearly 100 trails over 1,800 acres of terrain. It’s strictly a ski area with no lodging at the base.

Most of the runs are for more experienced skiers and snowboarders, but the resort doesn’t ignore beginners who can find plenty to keep them busy. Little known fact, there’s an entire small Loveland Valley, a separate tiny ski area to the bigger Loveland Basin, so beginners can ski without all the speedsters around.

Loveland has a few options for dining and picking up souvenirs, but don’t expect to find a lot of options as the resort’s clear focus is the terrain. The closest commercial town on the east side of the Eisenhower Tunnel is Georgetown at 12 miles or Silverthorne at 11 miles on the west side.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area – 63 miles / 1 h 11 min

A-Basin as it’s called, like Keystone, is another resort geared more toward veteran skiers and snowboarders than beginners. With around 1,400 acres of skiable terrain, the resort is one of the smaller resorts in Denver, and with a clear focus on the terrain, restaurants and shops at the resort are limited. A-Basin encompasses nearly 150 trails including some very extreme terrain, but only a handful of the runs are suitable for beginners.

A-Basin is only around an hour and fifteen minutes from Downtown Denver , residing closest to Keystone but carries a neighbor Dillon postal address. While it may not be the best option for a typical family ski trip, if you’re looking for extreme terrain close to Denver well then A-Basin should not be overlooked.

Plus with “The Beach”, its tailgate-friendly parking lot, and usually the longest ski season in the state, the party and vibes are always going strong at A Basin.

Eldora Mountain Resort – 48 miles / 1 h 12 min

Eldora is one of the few resorts on our that is not located along the I-70 corridor west of Denver. Instead, Eldora is perched in the foothills about forty-five minutes southwest of Boulder, and around an hour and fifteen minutes northwest of Denver.

With just under 700 skiable acres and only a couple dozen trials, Eldora is not nearly the size of some of the other ski areas near Denver. You also won’t find anything close to the selection of restaurants and shops that you will at the bigger resorts.

This locals’ ski area, however, is great for beginners and the location near Nederland allows visitors to ski or snowboard in the morning and still have time in the day to explore the sights of the nearby towns. Plus it allows you to avoid the bumper-to-bumper traffic that plagues I-70 on winter weekends.

If you plan to visit Eldora do be aware that the resort often reaches its capacity during weekends, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning or visit during a weekday if possible.

Winter Park Resort – 66 miles / 1 h 19 min

Winter Park Resort has a unique history among Colorado’s ski areas as it’s the “oldest continually operating ski resort in the state”. It was an actual city park owned and operated by the City of Denver until early in the 2000s.

Note that Steamboat Springs’ Howelsen Hill is the oldest continually operating “ski area” in North America, first opening its alpine area in 1931. Another oldie, Monarch Mountain first opened in 1939, although it has changed ownership numerous times and closed down at one point or another before reopening.

This Grand County resort has undergone many expansions since its first opening on January 28th, 1940, and currently boasts over 3,000 skiable acres and 166 designated trails. It may have more to offer to experienced skiers as compared to beginners, but the sheer number of runs available will keep skiers and boarders of all abilities occupied.

For those looking for more of a challenge, the Mary Jane section of the resort is well known for its bumps and tree runs. The town of Winter Park boasts both a mountain village and a “downtown” strip along Highway 40.

Keystone Ski Resort – 69 miles / 1 h 19 min

Some resorts in Colorado cater to a more luxurious experience, while other resorts cater to a more extreme experience. Keystone Ski Resort falls under that second category. It lies just a bit east of Breckenridge and on the other side of Loveland Pass from Loveland Ski Area.

The resort stretches over 3,100 skiable acres and six peaks. The town of Keystone is centered around its picturesque ski village with some commercial shops around Highway 6.

Experienced skiers and snowboarders will love the bowls, chutes, and tree runs higher on the peaks, and while the options for the less experienced are limited there are still plenty of terrains to enjoy for beginners.

Keystone may not be able to offer the luxury ski experience that some other resorts can, but if you’re seeking an alpine adventure within a quick drive from Denver then it’s well worth it. There’s also the state’s best night skiing at Keystone .

Copper Mountain Resort – 77 miles / 1 h 20 min

Copper Mountain Resort is an endearing ski area located around an hour and fifteen minutes straight west of Denver. With just under 2,500 skiable acres and 140 trails, the resort features plenty of options for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. It is laid out so that similarly rated runs are fairly clustered together.

This layout has the effect of keeping skiers and boarders among others with a similar skill level but also means that beginners won’t be able to explore too much of the mountain.

The town of Copper Mountain rests at the base of the mountain, providing the shops, restaurants, and hotels, which can be expected at a well-developed ski resort. It’s a definite mountain village vs an authentic downtown.

Unlike some other more secluded ski resorts , Copper Mountain and its Summit County neighbors (along with Keystone, Breckenridge, and A-Basin) are only a short drive from the towns of Frisco, Silverthorne, and Dillon.

The resort’s proximity to those towns opens up all kinds of other lodgings, dining, and entertainment options that simply can’t be squeezed around the base of a ski resort.

Breckenridge Ski Resort – 81 miles / 1 h 31 min

Tucked in the mountains just south of Dillon, Breckenridge isn’t just home to a fantastic ski resort, the town itself is a destination. Founded in 1859 when gold was discovered in Blue River, Breck quickly grew to over 1,600 residents and became one of Colorado’s most productive gold towns. Once the gold rush died down the town itself nearly wasted away.

In 1950 under 300 citizens remained but Breckenridge Ski Resort opened its doors in 1961 and brought new life to the area. The town has been able to preserve several historic buildings, many of which now house restaurants, shops, and hotels along the picturesque Main Street.

Breckenridge Ski Resort features terrain suitable for all skill levels spread over five distinct peaks and nearly 3,000 acres. The resort’s Imperial Express SuperChair holds the distinction of being the highest chair lift in North America, topping out at a breathtaking 12,840 feet above sea level. It’s worth noting it’s one of the state’s busiest ski areas, so plan accordingly.

Vail Ski Resort – 97 miles / 1 h 39 min

Vail, Colorado , for good reason, is known worldwide for both its terrain and gorgeous mountain villages. With over 5,300 skiable acres and the best grooming around, as well as hotels, restaurants, and shops that stretch for close to seven miles along a charming creek, Vail is the biggest resort on our list.

Ski runs of all difficulties are spread throughout the mountain, meaning that all skiers and snowboarders can enjoy this massive playground.

The fun isn’t limited to just the winter, as a mountain coaster, white water rafting, hiking, and mountain biking are available during the summer months. Vail Ski Resort is one of the more expensive destinations on our list, but for good reason. Between the resort and the enchanting Bavarian-inspired town itself, Vail showcases an unforgettable Colorado experience during any season all within around an hour and a half of Denver.

Granby Ranch – 86 miles / 1 h 42 min

Granby Ranch is unique in that it’s one of Colorado’s last family-owned ski resorts. Located in the mountains just south of Granby, the resort lies about 20 miles drive north of Winter Park. There’s a small mountain village, in addition to downtown Granby . The resort is smaller than most on our list with 38 trails spread over 400 acres and two separate peaks.

The trails tend to be separated by skill level, with the easier terrain on East Mountain and the more difficult terrain on West Mountain. You won’t find extreme terrain or an abundance of restaurants or luxury shops at the base of Granby Ranch, but it is a great option for a family-focused ski getaway. They have night skiing to provide after-hours fun on the slopes.

Beaver Creek Ski Resort – 109 miles / 1 h 53 min

Perched on the slopes just south of Avon, and a little under two hours straight out I-70 from Denver sits Beaver Creek Resort , one of Colorado’s most famous and most luxurious ski areas. The resort seamlessly combines luxury and alpine adventure with 1,800 acres of skiable terrain, stunning views of the Vail Valley and surrounding peaks in every direction, and several top-notch ski-in/ski-out hotels.

The resort prides itself on offering terrain for all ability levels, and there truly is something for everyone with everything from meandering greens to intensely steep double-black diamonds on the multiple peaks that make up the resort.

Once you’ve had your fill of skiing for the day there is no shortage of restaurants, spas, galleries, and shops to discover among the three base villages. If the dozens of shops and restaurants in Beaver Creek don’t have what you’re looking for, the Riverfront Express Gondola provides service to the edge of Avon , which itself is a pleasant mountain town worth exploring.

Ski Cooper – 108 miles / 1 h 55 min

Leadville’s hidden gem is perfect for families and beginner/intermediate skiers looking to save a few bucks and time on the lift lines. Although new for the 2019/2020 ski season is another chair lift accessing new challenging terrain. The Tennessee Creek Basin opens up three types of expert terrain, all of which are steep.

The official stats for Ski Cooper are 490 skiable acres and a 1200-foot vertical. However, with the new terrain expect some of those numbers to rise (will update if does). The base of Cooper is like most small ski areas, with no lodging, and a cafeteria-style dining and gift shop. Come see why locals love “the heart of skiing in the heart of the Rockies”!

Local skiers and snowboarders all have their favorite runs and resorts for their reasons. It may take a little time for you to find your favorites, but you can’t go wrong with any of these fantastic options within just a couple of hours of Denver.

Denver: A Springboard To Colorado Snow -

Denver International Airport ranks as one of the top 10 busiest airports in the world. It sees volumes of winter travelers due to Colorado's 30 ski resorts. Several see early fall skiing and late spring snows, creating some of the longest ski seasons in the continental U.S.

Many of Colorado's ski resorts cluster around Interstate 70 that slices horizontally through the state's northern tier. A freeway road trip from Denver hits both small ski hills and mega-resorts with ease—Though there is a weekend rush of traffic by Coloradoans to and from the slopes.

Best Ski Resorts near Denver

Say you have only part of a day to ski and don't want to waste time in the car. Then, head to Echo Mountain Park , only 35 minutes from town. The hill may be small, but it's open 12 hours per day Wednesdays through Saturdays for bonking off its hip park features.

An hour's drive can take you to where the locals go along the Continental Divide for some of the state's highest elevation skiing. Loveland , which is actually two ski areas connected by bus, tops out as the second highest resort in the state with its hike-to summit touching 13,010 feet. Its sky-scraping elevation often permits the resort to begin making snow in September.

A 90-minute road trip from Denver leads to a fistful of ski resorts. Winter Park , located on Highway 40, connects three peaks under one lift ticket. Almost 60 percent of its terrain is rated advanced to expert, which explains why the U.S. Freestyle Mogul Team trains preseason here every year. But, there's plenty of terrain for beginners.

Arapahoe Basin — or A-Basin, as the locals call it — claims the record book for the highest skiable terrain in North America. It tops out at a lung-busting 13,050 feet. Its expert terrain is a magnet for the hard cores, but the elevation also lets its north-facing bowl hold snow for skiing into early June.

Four massive mountains comprise Keystone with its 19 lifts and longest run stretching 3.5 miles. It lights up the slopes for the largest night skiing in Colorado that includes a monster terrain park with over 50 rails and fun boxes.

Hoards of destination skiers head to Breckenridge with its 30 lifts. The resort often crowns the top of the popularity list with Vail , seeing up to 1.6 million skier visits per year. Copper Mountain , on the other hand, attracts the locals for its four big bowls, fewer crowds on the slopes, and shorter lift lines.

Longer drives can put you at the doorstep of many more ski hills. Most can also be accessed via short flights from Denver into county or smaller city airports.

Continue west on the I-70 for the pair of upscale sister resorts. Vail and Beaver Creek sprawl their luxury communities about a two-hour drive from Denver. Vail rivals Breckenridge for annual skier visits, but with double the acreage on its seven-mile-wide ski hill. Beaver Creek lures families with one-third of Vail's acreage.

Roll westward on I-70 about three hours from Denver to Glenwood Springs, the doorway to five more resorts. Tiny Sunlight sits right above the town, so you can ski and soak in the mineral pools all in one day. An hour's drive southeast on Highway 82 links to Buttermilk , Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, and Snowmass. You can ski or ride terrain made famous in all four by the X-Games. Snowmass also claims its place in the nation for having the longest lift-served vertical at 4,406 feet.

Want off the I-70 beaten path? A three-hour drive northwest from Denver lands you at Steamboat Springs , where 20 lifts service nearly 3,000 acres. The terrain claims a record for producing 54 Winter Olympians—more than any other resort in North America.

Find Crested Butte and a rugged Colorado backcountry flavor about four hours southwest of Denver. The resort gained a reputation with expert skiers and riders for its double-blacks in Headwall, Extreme Limits, and more terrain opening in Teocalli Bowl.

Colorado's high mountains yield a big plentiful advantage of snow. Denver is its quick springboard to the slopes.

Winter Park Resort, owned and operated by the city of Denver , is nestled at the base of the Continental Divide at the east end of the Fraser Valley. As the closest major destination resort to Denver, Winter Park offers easy access to skiers arriving at Denver International Airport from hundreds of domestic and international points. Just two hours from the airport, the surrounding mountain expanses and breathtaking scenery at Winter Park give visitors the impression that they are far away from the hustle and hassle of city life.

Looking for excellent skiing conditions? Winter Park Resort boasts 350 inches of annual snowfall. However, just because you can count on good snow doesn't mean you should expect to ski in blizzard conditions. On average, Winter Park has 106 days of sunshine during the ski season which means approximately 70 percent of the season is sunny!

Many first-time visitors are surprised to discover Winter Park's vast terrain. The three interconnected mountains and high alpine bowl are spread out over 134 designated trails on 2,886 acres served by a network of 20 chairlifts. Winter Park's variety of terrain caters to every ability level. The 30-acre Discovery Park is the ideal spot to learn and practice the basics of skiing.

When skiers are ready to move on, Winter Park mountain and the Vasquez Ridge offer miles of wide-open intermediate trails for laid-back cruising. For advanced and expert skiers seeking the ultimate challenge, the renowned steeps and moguls of the feisty Mary Jane mountain provide long thigh-burning bump runs, vertical chutes, and precipitous glades.

Just 53 miles west of Denver on I-70, Loveland is the closest ski area to Denver and averages 400 inches of snow annually. Arapahoe Basin Ski & Snowboard Area

Sixty-eight miles west of Denver , in Summit County, Colorado, you’ll find the spectacular Arapahoe Basin, known as A-Basin to locals. This over 60-year-old legend offers the highest skiable terrain in North America. A-Basin is races to be one of the first ski resorts to open each year. It draws skiiers and snowboarders from all across North America.

Half of the mountain is above timberline with open bowl skiing and snowboarding through spring and often into early summer. A-Basin as its called locally is known for staying open later, sometimes as late as July depending on whether the Rocky Mountains get an early snowpack. One of its signature runs, Pallavincini, is one of Colorado's longest and steepest trails. Arapahoe Basin has some of the best ski deals for beginners in the state.

Just 35 miles from downtown, Echo Mountain is Denver’s backyard ski and snowboard area. This is the closest ski resort to downtown Denver. You can take any number of buses to get to the resort for a day of shredding. You'll be skiing and riding in less than an hour’s drive from just about anywhere along Denver's Front Range.

Echo Mountain offers the most affordable skiing and riding in Colorado, including the cheapest season pass (with no restrictions and no blackout dates), the lowest daily ticket price around, and free close-in parking and public Wi-Fi. Echo Park offers a fully lit set of runs that allows you to ski after dark. But just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean Echo Mountain doesn’t deliver amazing ski conditions for skiers and riders of ages and ability levels.

Eldora Mountain Resort

A favorite among locals due to its convenient location - only 21 miles from Boulder and 47 miles from Denver - Eldora Mountain receives 300 inches of snow per year. Located three miles from Nederland, you'll not only get in the runs you want but have the option of staying in one of the coolest little ski towns in Colorado. Eldora boasts Colorado's best snow-making system. Coverage is 100% of groomed terrain, more than any other resort in Colorado.

Eldora also holds the distinction of being accessible via public transportation - you can take the bus from Boulder up the mountain for $4 and up. Eldora is considered small compared to some of the largest resorts in the area but this hidden gem welcomes locals and tourists alike during snow season.

Denver is a year-round outdoor playground. Go ice skating for free at the Downtown Denver Rink  in Skyline Park. The Mile High City also boasts more than 4,000 acres of traditional parks and parkways, which include 2,500 urban natural acres. Learn about the massive rock formations in the Geologic Niche and explore the Trading Post Loop Hiking Trail, a 1.4-mile adventure through spectacular rock formations, valleys and a natural meadow. Central City & Black Hawk

I-70 West and Exit 243 onto Central City Pkwy. Head for the hills and check out all the fun  Central City and Black Hawk  have to offer. Located 34 miles (55km) west of Denver, the two towns offer more than 30 casinos with blackjack tables, craps, roulette, poker games and more than 10,000 slot machines. In 2009, gambling stakes were raised to $100, to the delight of high rollers. The two cities are also known for having some of the best-preserved Victorian architecture in the West. Other attractions include the Teller House Hotel, where President Grant once stayed and the Central City Opera House , which still features an outstanding summer season of opera after more than 100 years. There are mine tours, mining museums and several places offering instruction in the fine art of in-stream gold panning where a half-billion dollars of the coveted, shiny metal was once found.

On sunny days, you might want to lounge on "The Beach," a stretch near the Early Riser parking lot that backs up to three lower-mountain chairlifts.

Copper Mountain Resort

Winter activities at 9,600 ft. available at Copper Mountain include skiing, snowshoeing, overnight back-country hut trips, sleigh rides and more! As the largest resort in Summit County , Copper offers diverse terrain on a well-designed, easy-to-navigate mountain. Veteran skiers prefer the east side, while beginner and intermediate skiers enjoy the moderate terrain farther west. The resort also boasts 16 miles of cross-country trails and first-rate terrain parks. Make sure to catch the Winter Dew Tour (Dec. 16–19, 2021) , a free annual winter ski and snowboard competition and festival.

Echo Mountain

Located just 36 miles from Denver in nearby in Idaho Springs, Echo Mountain is the closest ski area to Denver, making it easy to fit into even the shortest weekend trip! Originally opened in 1960 as the Squaw Pass Ski Area, Echo has gone through many iterations over the years, including a terrain park and a private ski race training facility. It reopened as a ski resort in 2016 and has undergone extensive renovations over the past few years, including a brand new tubing hill, an expanded beginner ski area and a new food-and-beverage menu (featuring “life-changing fries”). Night owls can even take part in night skiing throughout the season!

Eldora Mountain Resort

A favorite among locals due to its convenient location — only 21 miles from Boulder and 47 miles from Denver —  Eldora Mountain  receives 300 inches of snow per year. Eldora boasts Colorado's best snowmaking system. Coverage is 100 percent of groomed terrain, more than any other resort in Colorado. Eldora also holds the distinction of being accessible via public transportation: you can take the bus from Boulder up the mountain and back for a mere $5.25 each way.

Outfitting in Denver

Denver is a great place to outfit before you head up into the hills. One of the local supermarket chains, King Soopers, sells lift tickets at a small discount. REI is one of the largest sporting goods stores in the nation, offering a full range of ski, snowboard, cross-country ski, snowshoeing and winter clothing. I’ve lived in metro Denver for almost four decades now, and my favorite thing about my city is all the possible adventures you can experience within an hour or two. While there are so many fun things to do in downtown Denver , you don’t want to miss these day trips from Denver to make even more memories in Colorado.

One Hour or Less: Day Trips From Denver

These quick Denver day trips are perfect year-round getaways, no matter the time of year.

Arvada, Colorado: 20 minutes from Denver

I might be biased as I live in Arvada, but this urban city is a hidden gem. And travelers won’t have to drive to get here. Instead, take the G-line light rail at Denver’s Union Station, and let the conductor take you directly to Arvada. Here’s what to do in town:

• Olde Town Arvada maintains its small-town feel with its Olde Town Square, the heart of the city and where the Sunday Farmer’s Market takes place. In the summer months, kids can cool off here in the splash pad fountain.  
• Stroll the pedestrian-only streets where boutique shops sell handmade pottery, jewelry, and clothing, including our favorite, Carly’s Boutique.
• Dining options include burgers and pizza, Asian and Mexican cuisine with breweries and taverns as well.
• The grandkids never miss a chance to stop at the old-fashioned candy and ice cream shop, Scrumptious.
• Feeling creative? Stop at Into the Fire Pottery  and paint your own pottery. Firing takes 3-7 days, so be sure you have time to stop back to pick it up.
• Bring your walking shoes as Arvada is also home to 125 miles of hiking, cycling, and horseback riding trails.

Golden, Colorado: 20 Minute Drive from Denver

Another family favorite is the small town of Golden, 15 miles west of Denver and part of the Front Range Urban Corridor. Golden offers a wide range of activities for all ages. These include hiking trails, biking trails, kayaking, tubing, shopping, cultural attractions, and breweries.

• Drive the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway , a 40-mile loop connecting the towns of Golden, Morrison, and Evergreen. Stop at Lookout Mountain to see Buffalo Bill’s Grave.
• Another stop on the Lariat Loop is the famous Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater with its over 250 million years old Red Rocks sandstone formations, standing 300 feet high. Hike the 1.4-mile trail for some of the best early morning views.
• Summer in Golden is the perfect time to dip your toes in Clear Creek, which runs through the town. Enjoy whitewater rafting, kayaking, fly fishing, and tubing.
• Self-guided walking art tours are a fun way to experience the town’s public art.
• Downtown Golden features multiple restaurants, boutique shops, and brewpubs.
• Take the Coors Brewery  tour. Book well in advance, as these guided tours sell out quickly.
• The Colorado Railroad Museum  is a kid-friendly museum for train fans of all ages.
• The rooftop patio of the Golden Mill serves up delicious food options, brews, wines, and cocktails. It also offers views of Clear Creek and Coors Brewing Company .

On more than 12,000 acres of forest, rocky peaks, mountain views, meadows, and lakes, it is located 16 miles from Golden, featuring mountain views, and wildlife. It’s close enough to Denver to get a taste of the mountains without the long drive. It also boasts 100 miles of the Continental Divide.

Boulder, Colorado: 30 minutes from Denver

Another perfect day trip from Denver is Boulder, with its own quirky personality. Boulder also offers access to Rocky Mountain National Park.

• Downtown Boulder’s Pearl Street is its famous pedestrian mall and part of the Downtown Historic City, with unique shopping, street performers, and other activities. Be sure to visit the candy store, Rocket Fizz.
• Home to plenty of hiking and biking trails, including at the 1898 Chautauqua Park with trail access to the Flatirons.
• Boulder is also home to Celestial Seasonings, a well-known tea company. For just $5, take a behind-the-scenes tour  of the manufacturing facility.
• For a unique playground experience that also gives back to the community, stop in at Junkyard Social Club , located on East Pearl Street. This unique rebel museum, adventure playground, and cafe offers 3,500 square feet of indoor space and 6,00 square feet of fenced outdoor space. The play structures are funky art installations, including an antique airplane and giant junkyard giraffe created from rescued junkyard pieces, swing sets, and murals. Central City & Black Hawk: 38 miles

Founded in 1859 by miners, Central City and Black Hawk are historic towns, a short scenic drive from Denver.

• Stroll the streets with many original buildings, architecture, and gold mines.
• Fans of ghosts, ghouls, and history will want to join in on the annual cemetery crawl, which starts toward the end of August, strolling through Central City’s 11 cemeteries.
• Book the Creepy Crawl during Halloween for more spooky history.
• For an adult-themed day trip, try your luck at the casinos in Central City and Black Hawk.

Idaho Springs: 40 minutes from Denver

As the closest town to Mount Evans in Clear Creek County, Idaho Springs is a scenic drive on I-70 and another of Colorado’s historic mining towns.

One of the state’s 58 fourteeners, Mt. Evans is west of Denver with access from Idaho Springs. Stretching 14,200 feet above sea level, the road to its peak is a 14-mile climb on North America’s highest paved road. Timed entry reservations  are required to access Mount Evans.

• The Mount Evans Scenic and Historic Byway (Highway 5) is usually open all the way to the summit Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and weather permitting partially open through early October. Keep an eye out for mountain goats, marmots, and other wildlife.
• On this byway, stop at the beautiful Echo Lake, part of Denver’s mountain park system, located 10,600 feet above sea level and 40 miles from Denver, and stop at the 1926 Echo Lake Lodge with a fireplace, restaurant, bar, and gift shop. The restaurant is known for its pan-fried trout.
• We often stop in Idaho Springs at one of their many restaurants when I-70 is a traffic jam. Our favorite restaurants are: Beau Jo’s, serving its famous Colorado pizza pies, and Tommyknocker Brewery & Pub, great bar food and beer.
• Learn about the city’s mining history at the family-owned Phoenix Gold Mine. Take a mine tour at Argo Mill and Tunnel. Stop by the Heritage Museum and Visitor Center, located at the beginning of Mt. Evans Scenic Byway.
• Visit to the Indiana Hot Springs Lodge (or book a room!) and soak in the healing waters of this indoor hot springs pool and cave baths.
• Make it a family adventure by booking a zipline tour and skytrek aerial course .

All Aboard: Mining Town of Georgetown, 50 minutes from Denver

Known for its Wild West and mining past, historic Georgetown, Colorado, is 45 miles west of Denver on I-70 at Exit #228, Georgetown offers the perfect mountain backdrop for a modern train ride with the Old West flavor just a short road trip away from Denver.

Known as the Silver Queen of the Rockies, this mountain town was found during the mining boom, as one of Colorado’s original mining towns.

• Explore the town, a National Historic Landmark District. The “village” offers shops, restaurants, and Victorian-era architecture.

One- to Two-Hour Day Trips from Denver

While visiting Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park could easily turn into a 2-3 day adventure, either can be done as a day trip from Denver.

• Once you’ve visited Rocky Mountain National Park,  you’ll understand why this is America’s favorite park. It’s so popular that the reservations are required  to enter the park.
• Trail Ridge Road is known as the “highway to the sky,” and the highest continuous road in the United States. Travel the 48 miles and climb 4,000 feet in minutes across and through Rocky Mountain National Park. Fuel up in Estes Park, Colorado, and head east to Grand Lake, Colorado in the west (or vice versa). Allow 3 hours or more (depending on how often you stop).
• A year-round destination and the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park is home to the haunted Stanley Hotel  and a long list of things to do. Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak Region: 90 Minutes From Denver

Always a popular day trip, Colorado Springs is located 70 miles south of downtown Denver. With many must-see attractions, this beautiful city is home to the Pikes Peak region including Manitou Springs and Canon City.

• Open year-round, our favorite zoo is still Cheyenne Mountain Zoo , the highest-altitude zoo in the United States.
• Perhaps the most popular attraction is Garden of the Gods , with its 300-foot rock formations with a backdrop of Pikes Peak, hiking trails, and horseback riding.
• Explore nearby historic Manitou Springs with. Stroll Manitou Avenue (Main Street) lined with boutique shops, souvenir stores, and restaurants.
• All aboard Pikes Peak Cog Railroad with a ride up, up, up to 14,000+ feet of Pikes Peak.
• Prefer to drive? Buckle up for mountain views beyond comparison and a road trip you’ll not forget.

Pikes Peak Region: Canon City

A day trip to Canon City will be a fun-filled and adventure-packed day, but to truly enjoy this Colorado city, an overnight stay might be warranted. From adventures at the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park and whitewater rafting to dinosaurs and wine tasting, be sure to add Canon City to your must-see Colorado destinations.

• Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Arkansas,” the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is located 956 feet above the Arkansas River. Home to one of the world’s highest suspension bridges, it also includes an amusement park with rides, playground, and other adventures including ziplining.
• For a different view of the Royal Gorge Bridge, ride the 1950s-era Royal Gorge Railroad underneath the bridge.
• Whitewater rafting with Echo Canyon River Expeditions is an adventure for all ages. My recent experience was a family float with my 4-year-old granddaughter, but they have rafting for all ages.
• Drive Skyline Drive, a narrow one-way-only road and a short detour, with the reward of a mountain vistas and Canon City below.

People have been flocking here in droves, making what used to be a quaint town balloon in size (and in price… if you’re talking real estate). And it’s easy to see why. There’s a lot to love about Boulder:

Whether you’re looking to just visit Boulder as a day trip from Denver or you’re planning to spend a few days, there are plenty of things to keep you busy and entertained. Here are just a few:

• Dushanbe Tea House : Beautifully constructed building that was made in Tajikistan, shipped to Boulder and rebuilt next to the creek. Come for tea and snacks or make a reservation for their afternoon tea service. (Pictured above)
• Go hiking: There are countless trails in and around the Boulder area. We recommend checking out Chautauqua Park or Mount Sanitas. Look on AllTrails to find a hike that is the length and level you’re looking for.

2. Hike a 14-er

• At a glance: Hiking enthusiasts flock to Colorado to tackle one of the 58 mountain peaks in the state that reach over 14,000 feet in elevation.
• Distance from Denver: distance and driving time varies depending on which peak you choose

As you start to plan your day trips from Denver, you’ll without a doubt come across all sorts of suggestions to hike a 14-er. 

So first things first, what the heck is a “ fourteener ” to begin with?

It’s simply a mountain that is more than 14,000 feet tall at its summit. And Colorado has a ton of them. Well, 58 to be precise. That’s more than any other contiguous US state.

Hiking to the top of a 14-er is on many-a Colorado bucket lists, and it’s more doable than it might seem.

While 14,000 feet is an incredible height, remember that you’re not actually climbing all 14,000 feet. You’ll be starting from a somewhat high elevation to begin with, so many 14-ers only require 3,000 feet (or so) in elevation gain from the beginning of the hike to the summit. 

Now, when I say “only 3,000 feet” there’s two major things I want to point out…

• a) 3,000 feet is still a big elevation gain
• b) Starting at such a high elevation can affect people differently. If you live in say, Miami or NYC (aka essentially sea level), you’re already experiencing a huge shift in altitude when you set foot in Denver. So it is advised that you give yourself a few days in Denver to acclimate before attempting a major hike.

Alright, now onto the fourteener that we hiked…

Mount Bierstadt

• Distance: 7.5 miles out and back
• Elevation Gain: 2,782 feet
• Difficulty Level: Challenging
• Drive from Denver: 1 hour 45 minutes

Often described as one of the easiest 14-ers in Colorado, Mount Bierstadt makes a great choice, especially if you’re somewhat new to hiking. (We even saw a handful of children doing this hike!)

This hike took us 5 hours in total hiking time: 3 hours up and 2 hours down. Additionally, we stopped at the top for a bit to enjoy the view, adding on about 20 minutes.

The last hour or so gets pretty steep, and the last bit of the trail requires some scrambling, but it’s not a technical climb. We saw some mountain goats and had nice views from the top!

Other Fourteeners near Denver

Grays Peak  

• Distance: 8 miles round trip
• Elevation Gain: 3,000 feet
• Difficulty Level: Challenging (easy by 14-ers standard)
• Drive from Denver: 2 hours

As the highest peak in Colorado’s front range, Grays is a well-traversed beginner-friendly hike just off I-70 with a gentle ascent. 

Start your hike on the Grays Peak trailhead, and if you’re feeling ambitious you can continue your climb to neighboring Torreys Peak and check two 14-ers off your list at once!

Torreys Peak

• Difficulty Level: Challenging (moderate by 14-ers standard)

Similar to its neighbor Grays, Torreys is a short, gentle climb with little exposure to the elements. As a popular hike, you can expect to have lots of company on the trail during the summer months. 

Start your hike on the Grays Peak trailhead, or bypass the summit of Grays by going directly to the Grays-Torreys saddle.

• Distance: ~14 miles round trip
• Elevation Gain: 7,400 feet
• Difficulty Level: Challenging 

The most prominent peak in Pike National Forest near Colorado Springs is also a popular but challenging 14-er. With over 7,400 feet in elevation gain this hike can take 6-8 hours to complete depending on your hiking ability. 

With two different trails to the summit, you can choose the popular but more advanced Barr Trail (14 miles one way) or the shorter less-traversed Crags Trail (13.6 miles round trip). 

• Distance: 14 miles round trip
• Elevation Gain: 5,100 feet
• Drive from Denver: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Not a great hike for beginners, Longs Peak comes highly recommended for experienced hikers who are used to the altitude. In fact, it is considered somewhat of a rite of passage by locals. 

You’ll want to start your hike early (like 3 a.m. early!) from the Longs Peak Trailhead near Estes Park, CO to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms.

Tips for hiking a 14-er

• Carry enough water: Your hike may not cross a water source, so come prepared. For our 14-er, we each carried 3 liters of water.
• Bring sun protection: Even if it’s not sunny, you are more susceptible to getting burnt at higher elevation.

• Start early: This will help you avoid crowds, secure a parking spot, and avoid the midday heat. It’s also just nice to get long hikes like this done with so you don’t have to worry about making it out before dark.
• Download AllTrails Pro : This will allow you to have access to the map and elevation gain even without being connected to cell service. We have the paid version of the app because we like to record our hikes, but the free version is just fine to follow along with.
• Wait a few days before you hike: It’s not a good idea to hike a 14-er on your first day in Colorado, especially if you’re from, say, NYC or Miami (aka sea level!). Give yourself a couple of days (at least!) to acclimate to higher elevation before you attempt a big hike. And don’t write this one off — not waiting long enough can make your hike miserable and potentially dangerous.
• Listen to your body: One of the most difficult parts about hiking a 14-er is that you’ll be at high elevation from the time you begin your hike. Elevation affects everyone differently, so listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded or nauseous, stop and rest. If it doesn’t subside, consider going back down in elevation, which is the only way to truly alleviate these symptoms.

3. Rocky Mountain National Park

• At a glance: A gorgeous national park with various hiking trails, plentiful wildlife and pristine lake views
• Distance from Denver: 65.7 miles; 90 minutes driving time

If you too are a fellow National Park geek, RMNP will likely already be on your radar. Just an hour and a half from downtown Denver, visiting this park makes an excellent day trip.

If you have the time, we’d recommend stretching your visit over a few days, but we also know that’s not always possible. Heck, when we visited we only had a few hours because there was a reservation system in place to enter the park and all tickets were sold out. The only way to visit was to enter after 5 p.m.

Tip: Make sure you plan ahead and secure a timed-entry permit if you’re traveling from May through October.

With limited time in Rocky Mountain National Park, we’d recommend the following:

Emerald Lake Trail

• Distance: 4.1 miles out and back
• Elevation gain: 744 feet
• Difficulty level: easy/moderate: this trail rated on AllTrails as moderate, but we thought it was on the easier side of the spectrum

This trail is popular, but the crowds thin out the further along you go. Both photos above were taken on this hike, and the trail packs in a lot of epic views in a relatively short distance. 

You’ll pass by 4 lakes (with Emerald Lake being the last), and will have views over a forested valley. It’s a great hike, especially if you want to make the most of your limited time!

Sprague Lake

• Distance: .8 mile loop
• Elevation gain: 39 foot elevation gain
• Difficulty level: easy

For a super easy and quick loop, this path offers views of Long’s Peak and is suitable for all ages and abilities. We even spotted a moose on the way to the lake!

Drive on Trail Ridge Road

This road crosses over the Continental Divide and offers many viewpoints and turnouts along the way. (Trail Ridge Road is closed in the winter.)

Have more time? 

If you’re feeling adventurous, we always recommend people do a backcountry trip in National Parks. Spending the night in the backcountry is the best way to avoid crowds and really see the park in a different, more intimate way. 

And don’t worry if you’re new to backpacking — there are often pretty easy hikes that work for an overnight trip. Just be sure you check in with the ranger station to get the proper permits (and a bear canister ).

4. Estes Park

• At a glance: Famous for being Colorado’s wilderness ‘playground’ and we can see why!
• Distance from Denver: 65.1 miles; 90 minutes driving time 

Estes Park is a quaint mountain town that is revered by nature enthusiasts for the scenery, access to outdoor adventures and free-roaming wildlife. Within the park, visitors will experience a multitude of landscapes: mountains, meadows, glaciers and waterfalls. 

Known for its surplus of free-range wildlife roaming throughout the park, if you’re lucky, you have the possibility of spotting elk, llamas and maybe even a moose! 

Due to its close proximity to the Rocky Mountain National Park (Estes Park is located at the base!), you can easily pair these two stops together on a day trip from Denver. Aside from an abundance of nature, Estes is a great place for outdoor activities beyond just hiking—kayaking, horseback riding and whitewater rafting—to name a few. 

Top things to do in Estes Park

• Go hiking, of course! We recommend the Emerald Lake Trail and, if you like an extra challenge, try Bear Lake as well! Please note, however, you need an exact parking permit to hike this trail; not just the entry pass. 
• Take in the scenery via horseback. Estes Park offers a variety of horseback riding tours and packages from 1 hour trips to overnight ones. 
• Catch an outdoor concert. Is there anything better than listening to live music and sipping a craft beer while surrounded by lush forests? In summer, Estes Park hosts outdoor concerts and a free shuttle service! 
• Pop by the luxurious Stanley hotel to snap some photos or grab a bite to eat. Visitors might recognize the infamous hotel from the set of The Shining. 
• Check out the local eateries. Lumpy Ridge Brewery is especially unique as it has been transformed from an old gas station! Another favorite is Bird & Jim which is a local favorite.

• At a glance: A charming mountain town neighboring Clear Creek; a perfect place to cool off in the summertime. 
• Distance from Denver: 15.2 miles; 20 minutes driving time 

Being that it’s just 30 minutes away from Denver by car, Golden makes a perfect day trip. The town itself has a cute Old Western vibe, and there are lots of breweries and restaurants to check out.

Things to do in Golden

• Float down the river in summertime: ‘nuff said! Read #4 in our Denver guide for all the details.
• Coors Brewery Tour: If you’re a Coors fan, you’ll probably want to do a brewery tour at the source. It’s free, and you get samples! It’s my older brother’s favorite beer, but honestly I can’t stand the stuff (sorry!). And truthfully, it’s not just Coors I dislike specifically; it’s all light lagers. I’m much more excited about craft beers. 
• We recommend Golden City , New Terrain , or Barrels & Bottles
• Hike Table Mountain: You’ll find trails of varying lengths, and from this area you’ll get great views.

6. Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater

• At a glance: Surrounded by stunning natural rock formations, this famous amphitheater offers a surplus of entertainment to enjoy day and night
• Distance from Denver: 16 miles; 25 minutes driving time

If you’re visiting Denver, you’ll really want to place Red Rocks near the top of your list. A quick 25 minute drive from the city, this is a unique and seriously stunning place. Best known as an epic concert venue that has hosted some big name acts from the Beatles and Johnny Cash all the way up to current pop artists and world-renowned DJs, Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater has a lot going on.  

Within the park there are numerous walking, hiking and biking trails to explore. The altitude of the park is around 6,000 feet and while the trails range in difficulty, they all offer incredible views of Denver and the opportunity to spot some unique wildlife like prairie dogs or foxes. Red Rocks is also seriously… old . It has a rich geographic history and contains million-year old fossil fragments from prehistoric eras—including dinosaur tracks! The famous outdoor amphitheater hosts a series of concerts and events throughout the year. Visiting the park is one thing, but seeing one of your favorite artists perform there puts things on a different playing field; we highly recommend this!

Top things to do at Red Rocks

• Catch a show: With its natural rock formations, this amphitheater is unlike any other venue you’ve seen. And what could be more fun than catching a live concert of one of the big name bands under the stars? We speak from experience when we say—not much!
• Get zenned out at Yoga on the Rocks: This event welcomes yogis of all levels to join together and enjoy their practice amongst the stunning scenery. Yoga on the Rocks happens every Saturday in summer (June through August). Tickets are $17 per session, but packages are also available and can only be purchased online ahead of time .
• Attend an outdoor movie screening: Red Rocks has hosted Film on the Rocks for over 20 years and it is still as popular as when it first started. They screen movies for all ages including old classics (think: The Goonies, Star Wars, etc.) and somewhat newer blockbusters and indie films as well. Tickets are $16 per person and must be purchased online in advance . Movies start at dusk. Don’t forget to BYO snacks! 
• The Geologic Overlook Trail is a great choice for a day trip as it is quite short, but will still lead to some gorgeous views. 
• The Mt. Vernon Creek Trail is only about a mile and offers views of the amphitheater.
• If you’re looking for something more challenging, you might try the Trading Post Trail. It is only over a mile, but the trail can be a bit rough in places. 
• Join the early morning exercise crew: Red Rocks has become a popular place for those looking for a challenging workout at 6,400 ft. If you show up around sunrise, you’re sure to run into plenty of others running the stairs or doing various other workouts in the empty amphitheater.  

7. Roxborough State Park

• At a glance: A lovely state park with an impressive commitment to conservation
• Distance from Denver: 26.7 miles; 44 minutes driving time 

Roxborough State Park is quite popular due to its quick access from Denver. In less than 45 minutes, you’ll be able to experience a true sense of tranquility. 

The park has quite a few restrictions such as no rock climbing, no camping, no bikes and no drones, but that also helps maintain the extremely peaceful atmosphere. 

Even more noteworthy, Roxborough is recognized by the Leave No Trace organization which recognizes public spaces that value conversation ethics. As travelers, it has always been important to us to support places that actively work to protect the environment. Plus, it’s totally worth the trip! If you’re looking to escape the crowds, you should plan to visit on weekdays or early mornings.

Top things to do in Roxborough State Park

• Have a picnic: Pack some of your favorite snacks and go for a relaxing picnic with your favorite person amongst the nature views. Don’t forget to take your trash with you when you leave!

• Go birdwatching: Since birds are protected in the park, Roxborough is a great place to bring your binoculars and try to spot some! There are also guided hikes designed for bird watching available.
• Go hiking: In case you need more hiking recommendations, Roxborough has 9 trails totalling 14 miles within the park to choose from. The best part? Bears are often spotted by hikers here! 

8. Evergreen

• At a glance: A charming mountain town for those who appreciate a more local and laid back vibe
• Distance from Denver: 29 miles; 40 minutes driving time

Tucked between the towering foothills of the Rocky Mountains, this town is a quick, but worthwhile trip from Denver. Since it is so close to the city, many locals commute from Evergreen making it an easy place to visit. Have a stroll around Evergreen Lake or hop in and paddleboard. Loop through the paved trail that passes the quaint and historic downtown area. In summer, the town hosts many festivals and farmer’s markets so keep an eye on your travel dates and see if they align with an interesting event in Evergreen. Aside from nature, Evergreen has a fantastic food scene so definitely try to arrange your trip over lunch or dinner. We especially love Murphy’s Mountain Grill (for food) and Creekside Cellars (for wine) but because both these places are also loved by the locals, be sure to make a reservation. 

Top things to do in Evergreen

• Get out on the lake: Since Evergreen lake is open year round, it offers a surplus of activities. In summer, you can rent paddle boats, kayaks or even sailboats from the Lake House. From December-March, try ice skating or hockey!
• Check out Maxwell Falls Lower Trail which is 7.1 miles and loops throughout Evergreen. 
• For something a little quicker (though quite steep) you might try Independence Mountain Trail at Pence Park . 
• Indulge in some local wine: Creekside Cellars is a family-owned winery with a gorgeous view of Bear Creek. This is a perfect way to wind down after a hike.
• Explore Evergreen’s food scene: We recommend Murphy’s Mountain Grill which serves exceptional bar food and signature cocktails. If you’re looking for a ‘townie’ steakhouse vibe, visit Switchback Smokehouse . They also have a dog-friendly patio! For a more laid back experience, grab a beer and some snacks at Evergreen Brewery . 

9. Mount Evans Scenic Byway

• At a glance: The highest roadway you can travel (by car) in America with an astonishing summit view
• Distance from Denver: 33 miles; 40 minutes driving time

The paved road to the 14,260-foot summit of Mount Evans is the highest road you can travel by car in the U.S. The road is so high that you’ll pass through five different climate zones on the way up. (How cool is that!?) 

Before you ask, it’s well-worth the journey for the stunning mountain vistas, high-altitude lakes, wildlife, and rare bristlecone pine forests you’ll pass on the way. Not to mention the views from the summit! 

At 60 miles round-trip from downtown Denver, it’s closer (and cheaper!) than driving up Pikes Peak. The Mount Evans Scenic Byway drive will take 2-3 hours each way (depending on how many times you stop for photo ops) and is not recommended for people prone to motion sickness as there are many twists and turns on the road.

Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, the road is free to traverse until you get to the top. The last 14 miles of road before you reach the summit are maintained by the US National Forest Service and will cost $10 per car to enter (or free with an annual park pass ). 

From the parking lot at the top, there is a short hike to the actual summit of the mountain. The altitude will be challenging, so walk slowly up the path and be careful not to over exert yourself.

10. Garden of the Gods

• At a glance: With its eccentric rock formations and a palpable history, this unique park simply oozes beauty!
• Distance from Denver: 69.7 miles; 1 hour and 20 minutes driving time 
• Cost: free to the public
• Hours: 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The breathtaking sandstone formations known as Garden of the Gods jut up from the forest in all directions, seemingly defying what rocks should look like.

Just outside the town of Colorado Springs, this National Natural Landmark is well worth a visit on your trip to Colorado, even if just as a day trip from Denver. (It takes just 1 hour 20 minutes to get there from downtown.)

This area attracts everyone from casual hikers to rock climbers. 

Photography enthusiasts will love capturing the rusty reds of the rocks against the lush green juniper trees all set against a blue sky backdrop. And history buffs will be enthralled to learn about the dinosaurs that once roamed this land as well as the Native Americans who found shelter in these unique rock formations.

There are many hiking trails in the area but with limited time, the Garden of the Gods Loop Trail packs in the most punch for a quick visit.

Wander past all sorts of rock formations, through desert brush and get some epic views along the way. (Both photos above are from this trail.)

11. Whitewater rafting at Clear Creek

• At a glance: An unforgettable and exhilarating outdoor adventure with striking views along the way
• Distance from Denver: 40.7 miles; 50 minute driving time 

If you’re visiting Colorado in the spring or summer time and looking for a heart-thumping adventure, whitewater rafting should definitely be on your bucket list! As the winter snow melt comes down from the high country and flows into the Colorado rivers, it makes for an adrenaline rush like no other.

We’ve been whitewater rafting all around the world — from Costa Rica to Nepal to Washington State — and I’ve gotta say, each time is totally unique and different. In fact, you can raft the exact same river on two different days and have completely different experiences depending on the conditions.

There are many rafting opportunities throughout the state of Colorado, but if you’re looking for an excursion near Denver, Clear Creek is going to be the closest place to get your rapids on. 

Clear Creek Rafting is a reputable company that offers trips ranging from beginner level (suitable for children) to gnarly Class V rapids!

What time of year can I go whitewater rafting? They run trips on Clear Creek from mid-May to mid-August, and switch to a different river for trips during the month of September when Clear Creek is too low. Find out more information on their website .

12. Skiing near Denver

• At a glance: With the combination of 300 days of sunshine + high altitude + pristine snow … need we say more?
• Distance from Denver: varies depending on location

If you’re traveling to Denver in winter, skiing/snowboarding is likely on top of your list. And if it isn’t … might you consider adding it? Since there are loads of ski resorts close by, this adventure makes for an easy day trip.  If you’re looking to go skiing near Denver, check out some of the closest ski resorts for your to visit. Note: all prices below are for the 2022/2023 season. Be aware that prices may vary depending on when you buy your ticket and the number of days you’ll spend skiing. Many of the mountains have a three day pass ‘discount.’

13. Pikes Peak

• At a glance: One of the state’s breathtaking 14-ers which is also completely accessible by car
• Distance from Denver: 99.6 miles; 2 hours driving time

Pikes Peak is a stunning fourteener near Colorado Springs. Due to the high elevation, this hike is particularly difficult and recommended for experienced hikers. The trail is around 14 miles with an elevation of about 14,110 feet. 

Trail stats:

• Distance: 14.5 miles, out and back
• Level: Difficult

If you plan to attempt Pikes Peak by foot, do your research ahead of time and plan accordingly. 

On average, this hike takes around 6-8 hours to complete so if you’re planning this as a day trip from Denver, you’ll need to get an early start.

While this can be a challenging hike, it is also completely worth it! Near the summit you’ll have the chance to see ravens, eagles, Rocky Mountain Big Horn sheep and, well, absolute gorgeous-ness. 

Not interested in hiking Pikes Peak? 

You can also drive it! In fact, Pikes Peak is the only fourteener in Colorado that allows you to reach the summit by car. It’s about a 19 mile drive though there are many areas to stop along the way where you can stretch and rehydrate. Be sure to fill up your gas tank before the journey, however, as you cannot do this along the way. To drive, it costs $15 per adult and while we do find that quite expensive, it is a much more convenient and time-effective way to see Pikes Peak than hiking it. Plus, this option is totally accessible to everyone. 

Take the train to Pikes Peak

The Cog railway brings visitors straight to the peak and is currently the highest cog railway by elevation in the country. 

A little fun-fact: Way, way, way back a tourist took a two-day journey by mule to the summit. After visiting, he was in such awe of the scenery he wanted more people to experience the view and worked to have the railway built—thanks buddy! The train journey costs a hefty $38 per adult and $20 for children, but the scenery is unmatched and the experience is unique. Purchase your train tickets online . 

Whatever way you decide to visit the summit—hike, drive or ride—you’ll need to make a reservation . And because this is a quite popular destination, we recommend planning this day trip in advance. 

14. Colorado Springs

• At a glance: A beautiful city sitting at an elevation of 6,000 feet surrounded by views of the Rocky Mountains 
• Distance from Denver: 70.9 miles; 1 hour driving time 

A day trip to Colorado Springs is totally doable from Denver since it’s only an hour drive away. Like many places in the state, Colorado Springs has phenomenal views, hidden gems, cozy hot springs and a variety of other attractions geared toward nature lovers. You definitely won’t run out of things to do on this visit.  Aside from the outstanding nature, Colorado Springs has a vibrant food and nightlife scene. One of our favorite things to do when we explore a new place is take a food tour. Not only do you get to try a variety of local treats, but you often get exposed to some interesting history and local tips.

You can really visit Colorado Springs at any time of the year and there will be a variety of things to do, but it can get quite touristy in summer so, if your plans allow, we recommend visiting in the fall when the weather is crisp and the crowds have thinned. Not to mention the red and golden hues of the foliage—yes, please! 

Top things to do in Colorado Springs

• Cave of the Winds Mountain Park: Explore the ancient, underground world on a tour weaving through underground passages while learning about the history of the rock formations. There is also a haunted lantern tour that seems especially interesting considering the legends surrounding the caves. The tours range from 45 minutes to an hour and a half making this a perfect day trip activity! 
• Tour the US Olympic Training Center: Colorado Springs is home to the training facility that offers guided tours year-round. Visitors will be able to explore some of the facilities used by athletes training for the Olympics. The tours start at the top of each hour and last about 1-2 hours long.
• The Broadmoor Seven Falls: Although this is quite touristy, the Broadmoor Seven Falls looks like an interesting stop. It is quite accessible with stairs straight to the falls, but additional hiking around the area for something a bit more challenging.
• Take a food tour:   Rocky Mountain Food Tours offers a variety of packages from local eateries to luxurious ones. Food tours are a fantastic way to get a taste of the city especially if you’re unsure of where to start. 
• Since both Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak are located in close proximity to Colorado Springs, you can easily add these to your day trip from Denver.

15. Black Hawk / Central City

• At a glance: A mini-Las Vegas in the heart of the Rocky Mountains
• Distance from Denver: 38.2 miles; 50 minutes driving time 

Just west of Denver, this former mining town has a colorful history which you can experience by taking a walk through the town. The main attraction of this place, however, is the gambling. Locals and tourists alike flock to this area to experience the 20+ casinos ranging in style from high-end to family-owned—and everything in between! An especially cool accommodation is the Black Hawk Shuttle which runs up and down Main Street allowing you to hop from casino to casino quite easily. 

Not into gambling? Black Hawk, like nearly every other mountain town in the state, appeals to nature lovers as well. 

You can explore the many hiking trails or go fishing in Clear Creek. In winter, you might try snowshoeing as the views look incredible. The Great Parks Bicycle Route runs through Black Hawk and while you won’t be able to complete the entire thing (…it’s over 2,000 miles long!) you can explore parts of it on your day trip from Denver.

There is also a scenic byway that connects Black Hawk to Estes Park so you could easily combine these two trips together. The roadway is a little over 50 miles so, depending on how often you stop to take photos, stretch or refresh, this will take around 5 hours. 

16. Fort Collins

• At a glance: A lovely city packed with culture, outdoor activities and microbreweries 
• Distance from Denver: 64.9 miles; 1 hour driving time 

If you’re looking for a fun day trip from Denver, but don’t want to spend too much time on the road, Fort Collins is a great choice as it is only an hour north of Denver. This city has a vibrant art scene, endless outdoor activities and is especially known for its microbreweries. 

Fort Collins is home to Colorado State University which really gives it a local vibe. There is plenty to keep you occupied on a day trip. 

Top things to do in Fort Collins

• Go for a brewery tour by bicycle: Fort Collins Brew Cruise allows you to choose which brewery you want to visit then sets you up with an expert guide and all the gear you’ll need for your cycling adventure. 
• Try a popsicle from Revolution Artisan Pops to cool you down on a hot day.
• Explore Horsetooth reservoir: Spend the afternoon exploring this stunning area, which is great for swimming, hiking, biking and horseback riding. We definitely recommend trying a hike that leads to horsetooth rock! 
• Check out a live show: Fort Collins has a vibrant music scene. There are numerous venues, but the Magic Rat sounds especially quirky. 

17. Nederland

• At a glance: With a town motto of Life is Better Up Here , you’ll want to pay a visit to find out why
• Distance from Denver: 25 miles; 1 hour driving time 

Nederland is a picturesque little mountain town with a vivid history; it began as a trading post between the European settlers and Ute Indians. It is known for its flourishing indie music scene, microbreweries and—of course—stunning mountain scenery. The nature in Nederland (sometimes nicknamed ‘Ned’) is stunning and the downtown is lined with restaurants and boutiques. In fact, most of the shops are local and you won’t find any chain stores in this area. 

Located about an hour outside of Denver, just north of Boulder,  you could easily combine these two stops together as you arrange your day trip plans. 

Top things to do in Nederland

• Frozen Dead Guy Days : The town puts on a variety of festivals year-round, but if you’re traveling in March, this one seems especially quirky with its coffin-races and polar plunge. We say it’s definitely worth a visit! 
• Check out a local brewery: Get off the beaten path and have a beer at Knotted Root Brewing Company . It is a local and quaint brewery with a peaceful atmosphere. 
• Carousel of Happiness : While it seems as though it would cater only to kids, this one is absolutely worth a visit for anyone in Nederland. It has the most heart-warming story of how it was created and only costs $3 per ride. 
• Explore the outdoors: Spend some time exploring the gorgeous scenery in Nedland. Lost Lake via Hessie Trail is about 2 hours long and looks gorgeous.

18. Summit County in the summertime

• At a glance: Coined as Colorado’s Playground , Summit Country is full of world-class ski resorts and outdoor recreational hotspots 
• Distance from Denver: 73 miles; 1 hour 30 minutes driving time

If you’re looking to escape the flurry of city life, Summit County is less than 2 hours from the city by car and is easily one of the best day trips from Denver. The area covers some of the most popular ski towns in Colorado such as Copper Mountain, Keystone and Breckenridge. And while hitting the slopes is certainly a wonderful day-trip activity, Summit County is also a great place to visit in the summer months for all kinds of outdoor activities like biking and hiking. 

Top things to do in Summit County in the summertime

• Mountain View Sports even offers a ‘Ride the Pass’ trip where they drop you off at the top of Vail Pass and you descend through gorgeous vistas and paved roads. There are multiple levels for this tour, too, so you don’t have to be an experienced mountain biker to participate! 
• If you want to bike on your own, try Summit County Bike Path (easy) or Black Power Pass (challenging). 
• Set up a Tee-Time: There are numerous golf courses to choose from in the county, but Keystone is especially popular.
• Spend a day at Lake Dillon: This reservoir is surrounded by stunning 14-ers and it’s almost impossible to run out of things to do here. Spend the day hiking, biking, fishing or windsurfing. Or simply pack a picnic and a book, toss down a blanket and just take it all in.
• Take a boat cruise: Enjoy the views of the mountains straight from the Dillon reservoir by booking a boat tour . While visiting, you can take a historic tour and learn more about the area, go sailing or even plan a romantic little date on a sunset tour. 

19. Idaho Springs

• At a glance: A charming mountain town with outdoor activities, shopping and restaurants
• Distance from Denver: 33.8 miles; 40 minutes driving time

If you’re anything like us, you don’t like spending a ton of time in your car while traveling. Idaho Springs is only 40 minutes outside of the city making it a great choice for a day trip from Denver, especially if you don’t have loads of extra time to spare. Similar to many cities surrounding Denver, Idaho Springs has a rich history in the mining industry. If you take a stroll downtown, you can visit many old, preserved buildings. The Phoenix Gold Mine even lets visitors try their hand at gold panning.

Due to the close proximity to the highway, it is hard to escape traffic noises in Idaho Springs. One major bonus, however, is you can always stop for a tiny visit, fill up on gas here and then travel onward to some of the more remote and quieter places.

Top things to do in Idaho Springs

• Take a soak in the Indian Hot Springs . These are the closest hot springs you’ll find from Denver and they are definitely with a visit. You’ll have the choice to recharge in the mineral swimming pool (enclosed in a giant garden atrium), geo-thermal caves or rent a private bath; all surrounded by lush scenery.
• Whitewater rafting: If you’re visiting in the summer, go white water rafting with Clear Creek Rafting Company . Check out #11 on this list for more details.
• Hike St. Mary’s Glacier which takes about 2 hours round trip and begins near downtown Idaho Springs. 
• Take a drive to Mount Evans: You’ll enjoy the landscapes of Idaho Springs on your drive and have plenty of opportunities to stop for photos and snacks along the way. See #9 on this list. 
• Go window shopping in downtown Idaho Springs 

20. Cheyenne, WY

• At a glance: Get a taste for the Wild West and cowboy culture in the capital of Wyoming
• Distance from Denver: 113 miles; 2 hours driving time 

In just two hours, you can easily pop up to Wyoming for a quick day trip from Denver. Leave it to Cheyanne to fully immerse you in that classic Wild Wild West culture. In this capital city, there is an abundance of historical and cultural attractions, restaurants and outdoor activities. 

While Cheyanne is a large and busy city, it also appeals to nature lovers with its famous botanical gardens and Curt Gowdy state park. In our opinion, there are cooler places to visit from Denver, but if you’re in the area or it works with your travel plans, Cheyenne still offers some lovely things to do. 

Top things to do in Cheyenne, WY

• Attend the rodeo: Each summer the capitol of Wyoming hosts Cheyenne Frontier Days , a 9-day long outdoor rodeo and western celebration. If you’re traveling to Denver during this time, it would make a fun trip to check out the rodeo!
• Visit the Cheyanne Botanical Gardens where you can explore three stories of tropical foliage all-year round.
• Enjoy a surplus of outdoor activities at Curt Gowdy State Park. You’ll definitely forget you’re a few miles from the city-center as you explore the reservoirs or try the Crow Creek Trail. 
• Roam the streets of downtown Cheyanne and take a self-guided tour to learn some of the history of the city. While you’re there, check out many restaurant options available. 
• Go to a museum —there are loads! The Frontier Days Old West Museum or Wyoming State Museum are two great choices. 

21. Hanging Lake

• At a glance: A pristine, jaw-dropping waterfall-fed lake that requires a hike in
• Distance from Denver: 156 miles; 2 hours 30 minute driving time

Hanging Lake is considered a National Natural Landmark; it is a true gem located in the White River National Forest. With captivating views and tranquil waterfalls, this is an absolutely perfect way to spend a day trip from Denver. 

The hike is short, but can be quite steep in places. In addition, as of 2021, you do need a permit to hike here so be sure to plan a little ahead of time to account for this.

• Distance: 3 miles, out and back 
• Elevation: 1,187 feet
• Difficulty Rating: moderate

This is a really cool hike in all 4 seasons; in fact, the frozen lake is quite the draw (just check out our cover photo!). Always be mindful when hiking in winter , however, as the trail can be icy and you might consider using microspikes . 

Following the hike, we highly recommend a soak at Iron Mountain Hot Springs . There are over 15 pools to choose from and because it is open late (until 10 p.m.), you can really take your time to enjoy.

Skiing | Copper Mountain extends season “as long as conditions allow”

Five ski areas close this sunday, leaving just four open.

Copper Mountain officials announced the Summit County resort will remain open into May on Monday, joining the list of Colorado resorts with plans to remain open as long as conditions allow. The others are Breckenridge, Winter Park and Arapahoe Basin.

Copper’s high elevation and abundant snowpack enabled the extension. Its current mid-mountain snow depth is nearly five feet. Resort officials say the American Eagle, Excelerator, Super Bee and Storm King lifts will be running. The Storm King tops out at more than 12,250 feet.

Nine resorts are still open, five of which are scheduled to close on Sunday: Eldora, Aspen, Steamboat, Vail and Monarch.

More snow is on the way, according to the OpenSnow forecasting and reporting service , which is predicting double-digit snow totals over the next five days at Loveland, Arapahoe Basin, Vail and Winter Park. Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Eldora and Steamboat are expecting 8-9 inches.

While planning to remain open into May, Copper will hold its annual season-ending festivities on the previously scheduled weekend, April 27-28.
