Neil Young Launching West Coast Solo Acoustic Theater Tour in July

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Neil Young is kicking off a tour in July following a four-year hiatus from the road — but don’t expect a traditional set. In a live Zoom late Wednesday afternoon with paid Patron subscribers to the Neil Young Archives, he revealed that he’s been rehearsing a show centered largely around songs he’s never played live. It kicks off June 30 with at the 1,200-seat John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, and wraps up July 23 at the Oxbow RiverStage in Napa, California. Chris Pierce will open up every show.

The general ticket on-sale begins June 14 at 10:00 AM, and Young is utilizing Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange to make it near-impossible for scalpers to resell tickets at inflated prices.

Young said that he’s prepared a list of about 15 tracks for the show, including “Song X” from his 1995 Pearl Jam collaboration Mirror Ball, “Prime of Life” from 1994’s Sleeps With Angels , and the 1982 Trans outtake “If You Got Love.” “I did a demo of [“If You Got Love”] a few years [after Trans ] with a synclavier, a drum machine, harmonica, and some effects,” Young said. “I listened to it [recently], and it turned me on again. I’m now doing it with the organ and harmonica. It’s pretty cool.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Young didn’t perform in public a single time between Farm Aid in September 2019 and the United For Old Growth Rally in Victoria, British Columbia, on February 25 this year. That was a mere two-song acoustic set, but he followed it up on April 22 with an extended show with former bandmate Stephen Stills at the Hollywood Bowl and a brief appearance at Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday concert a the Hollywood Bowl later the month.

Young’s reluctance to perform was largely rooted in concerns about the spread of Covid. “I don’t want to play until you feel safe, and it is indeed, safe,” he said when pulling out of Farm Aid in 2021. “My soul tells me it would be wrong to risk having anyone die because they wanted to hear music and be with friends.”

Earlier this year, he also blasted Ticketmaster for their exorbitant service fees and huge resale mark-ups. “The old days are gone,” he wrote. “I get letters blaming me for $3,000 tickets for a benefit I am doing. That money does not go to me or the benefit. Artists have to worry about ripped off fans blaming them for Ticketmaster add-ons and scalpers. Concert tours are no longer fun. Concerts tours are not what they once were.”

Neil Young Returning To Touring For Run Of Solo Acoustic Shows

neil young, neil young tour, neil young tour 2023, neil young acoustic tour, neil young west coast acoustic tour, why doesn't neil young perform anymore, did neil young retire, buffalo springfield, stephen stills, crosby stills nash & young, neil young pearl jam, neil young trans, neil young fireside sessions, Prime of Life neil young, neil young song x, neil young if you got love,

You might not be able to find him on Spotify , but if you’re on the West Coast this summer, you can find Neil Young  back on stage. The Godfather of Grunge will return to touring for the first time since before the pandemic with a run of solo acoustic theater shows in July, per Rolling Stone .

There is a slight catch to Young’s first tour in four years, as he explained to paid Patreon subscribes to the Neil Young Archives in a Zoom call on Wednesday. For these concerts, Young has crafted a setlist centered largely around songs he’s never played live.

“I don’t want to come back and do the same songs again,” Young said. “I’ll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I’d rather be doing these other songs I haven’t done…I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to [how I played it in] 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020…”

Young said he has a list of about 15 songs for the shows, calling out several in particular from throughout his vast catalog. “Song X” from his 1995 collaboration with  Pearl Jam ,  Mirror Ball , made the cut, along with “Prime of Life” from 1994’s  Sleeps With Angels , and the 1982  Trans  outtake “If You Got Love”.

While the emphasis for these shows is on deeper cuts, Young isn’t annexing his tome of hits. According to the two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer , about 80% of the show will be devoted to the hidden gems.

“They’re not new songs,” he said. “They’re old songs. But I wake up with them in my head every morning. They are songs that apply to my life right now, and apply to everyone’s lives in this era that we’re in. Some of them were written 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago, but never really played live.”

Young teased that the run will begin with a four- or five-night residency at a West Coast “tiny, little unknown theater that’s close to one of the most well-known theaters in the world,” When the dates and venues were announced on Friday, that theater turned out to be the intimate 1,200-capactity The Ford in Los Angeles (presumably the well-known theater is Hollywood Bowl ). The tour also includes stops at Santa Barbara Bowl, The Greek, and other theaters and amphitheaters along the West Coast. Click below for a full list of dates. Tickets will go on sale starting Wednesday, June 14th at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster .

Since  Farm Aid in September 2019, Young has performed live just three times. He took protestors by surprise when he appeared at the “United For Old Growth Rally” in Victoria, BC on February 25th where he played two acoustic songs. Two months later, he staged a proper set with former Buffalo Springfield bandmate  Stephen Stills  at the guitarist’s  Light Up The Blues   benefit for autism. The following week, he made a brief appearance as part of the star-studded Willie Nelson  90th birthday concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

Young attributed his years-long reluctance to play live to lingering fears of the spread of COVID. While he did not engage with fans face-to-face, he kept up a steady flow of Fireside Sessions   livestreams during quarantine, performing solo acoustic rarities from his cabin in the Colorado mountains, his wife  Daryl Hannah  behind the camera. All the while, the Neil Young Archives kept fans stocked with a continuous slate of archival releases, with Young even digging up his “lost” 1975 album  Homegrown , among many other gems from the vault.

Neil Young Announces First Tour in Four Years

The "Costal Tour" takes place in July

Neil Young Announces First Tour in Four Years

Neil Young has announced his first tour in four years.

For now, the “Costal Tour,” as it’s called, sticks to the west coast. The outing begins with four nights a the 1,200-person capacity Ford Theatre in Los Angeles. He’ll then move on to larger venues, including the Santa Barbara Bowl, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and Berkeley, and the Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend, Oregon. According to a press release, more dates will be announced in the future.

The tour will pull from the more obscure reaches of Neil Young’s catalogue, highlighting songs he has yet to perform live over his six-decade career. The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer prefaced the setlist choice to patrons of the Neil Young Archives , saying, “I don’t want to come back and do the same songs again. I’ll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I’d rather be doing these others songs I haven’t done… I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to [how I played it in] 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020…”

Among the songs Young intends to play are “Song X” from Mirror Ball , the 1995 album made with Pearl Jam; the Trans  outtake “If You Got Love”; and “Prime Of Life” from 1994’s Sleeps With Angels . “They’re old songs. But I wake up with them in my head every morning,” Young explained. “They are songs that apply to my life right now, and apply to everyone’s lives in this era that we’re in. Some of them were written 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago, but never really played live.”

Despite his vocal suspicion that “touring is broken” due to Ticketmaster, seats to Neil Young’s 2023 tour will go up for grabs via Ticketmaster beginning Wednesday, July 14th at 10:00 a.m. local time.

Young broke his pandemic-related live hiatus in Feburary with a surprise acoustic set to Canadian protestors, followed by an on-stage reunion with Stephen Stills  in April and duet with Willie Nelson at the latter’s 90th birthday concert. He also released an album with Crazy Horse, All Roads Lead Home , in March.

Neil Young Kicks Off First Tour in Four Years: Video, Set List

Neil Young launched his first tour since 2019 last night (June 30) in Los Angeles.

He performed a 17-song solo acoustic set at the John Anson Ford Ampitheatre. While career-defining hits such as "Ohio" and "Heart of Gold" were played, the show focused largely on rarer songs such as "I'm the Ocean" and "On the Way Home."

You can see the complete set list and fan-shot videos from the show below.

Young had previously explained that he wanted this solo acoustic tour to focus on songs he hasn't played live. "I don't want to come back and do the same songs again," Young said [via  Rolling Stone ]. "I'll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I'd rather be doing these other songs I haven't done. ... They are songs that apply to my life right now and apply to everyone's lives in this era that we're in."

Though Young has made a handful of one-off appearances in the last few years, he has not toured since 2019, citing  concerns  about COVID-19, environmental damage  and ticketing practices . "Concert tours are no longer fun," he lamented earlier this year . "Concert tours [are] not what they were."

But Young has also stated that he wants to make his touring process — everything from his merch to the food supplied at venues — as environmentally clean and sustainable as possible. "This is something that's very important to me, if I'm ever going to go out again," he said to The New Yorker last year. "I'm still feeling that out, but if I'm ever going to do it, I want to make sure that everything is clean."

Young will perform three more nights at John Anson Ford in L.A., followed by a series of shows up and down the West Coast. He's also gearing up for the Aug. 11 release of Chrome Dreams , his long-lost 1977 LP.

Neil Young hits the road again with West Coast solo acoustic concert tour this summer

neil young acoustic tour 2023

Neil Young is hitting the road along the west coast this summer – and apparently breaking out some little-heard classics.

The limited run of solo shows along the west coast begins July 1 with four consecutive shows in Los Angeles, a press release revealed Friday. Other stops include San Diego, then dates in Oregon and Washington, before ending in Napa, California. Singer-songwriter Chris Pierce will be a special guest during the Coastal Tour.

These will be Young's first series of live performances since before the COVID-19 pandemic. He skipped Farm Aid 2022, but in April he did perform at the Light up the Blues event in Los Angeles , a benefit for Autism Speaks held by former bandmate Stephen Stills, and at Willie Nelson's 90th birthday concert .

Young voiced hesitation to return to live shows amid the pandemic to USA TODAY in December 2021, while speaking on the release of the album "Barn" from him and Crazy Horse: "There is no post-COVID right now. We've got a whole 'welcome back' thing," Young said, who added he had no touring plans at the time. "Give me a break. This is misinformation. It is totally wrong. We are not over this. We're not anywhere near over it."

Neil Young, Crazy Horse album: 'Barn' tackles mountain of problems on 'positive' album

Most of the songs Young plans to play – about 80% – will be songs he has recorded but not played live, he told fans during a Zoom call Thursday with Thrasher's Wheat , an unofficial Young fan and news site.

Tickets go on sale starting Wednesday, June 14 at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster and other usual outlets. Members of the Neil Young Archives can attempt to get tickets during a presale period starting Monday, June 12.

After the gold rush, comes the tour.

Neil Young , 77, is hitting the road for the first time since 2019.

However, the former Buffalo Springfrield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young singer will be mixing things up for his ‘Coastal Tour’ taking place exclusively in California, Oregon and Washington this July.

At all 13 upcoming acoustic gigs , the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee will be performing songs he’s never played live before according to the Neil Young Archives .

That doesn’t mean he’s just playing new stuff — just not “Heart of Gold” which he doesn’t want audiences to compare to how he sounded singing the classic tune live in 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020.

A few of the tracks that he is planning on including in the non-traditional set list include Pearl Jam’s “Song X” which he’s featured, 1994’s “Prime of Life” and the catchy Trans outtake “If You Got Love.”

And if you want tickets to see Daryl Hannah’s husband live right now, you can grab them as soon as today .

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Wednesday, June 14, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Young will be joined by special guest Chris Pierce at all shows.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse Announce First Tour in 10 Years in Support of New Album

Neil Young fans, listen up: He and Crazy Horse are hitting the road for the first time in a decade.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse were set to hit the road in 2020 before the pandemic derailed those plans, reported Variety. Prior to that would-be road trip, the group hadn't toured extensively in the U.S. since 2014, making this news a pretty major announcement.

It's also big news considering many fans weren't sure Young would tour again, ever. After the pandemic put the kibosh on the 2020 tour, Young expressed concern about returning to live show environments even after COVID lockdown restrictions lifted. And years earlier, in 2002, Young told The New Yorker he didn't want to tour again unless he could do it in an environmentally responsible way.

Fortunately, he has returned to touring in small ways, performing a solo acoustic tour in 2023 as well as playing a select few live shows with Crazy Horse. But the just-announced tour is by far the biggest, set to take place in amphitheaters across North America. See the full tour dates below:

  • 4/24-25: San Diego at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre
  • 4/27: Phoenix at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre
  • 5/01: Austin, Texas at Germania Insurance Amphitheater
  • 5/02: Dallas at Dos Equis Pavilion
  • 5/05: Huntsville, Alabama at Orion Amphitheater
  • 5/07: Atlanta at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre
  • 5/08: Franklin, Tennessee at FirstBank Amphitheater
  • 5/11: Bristow, Virginia at Jiffy Lube Live
  • 5/12: Camden, New Jersey at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion
  • 5/14: Queens, New York at Forest Hills Stadium
  • 5/17: Mansfield, Massachusetts at Xfinity Center
  • 5/18: Bridgeport, Connecticut at Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater
  • 5/20: Toronto at Budweiser Stage
  • 5/22: Clarkston, Michigan at Pine Knob Music Theatre
  • 5/23: Chicago at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island

Dubbed the Love Earth tour, the 16-date tour will span San Diego (April 24-25) to Chicago (May 23), reported Variety, promoting the release of a new Neil Young & Crazy Horse album titled ""Fu##in' Up." The record will see a limited release on April 20 for Record Store Day followed by a wide release to all formats on April 26. The album is being billed as a retrospective of sorts, featuring songs from the band's past recorded live in 2023, per Variety.

Of the new album, Young said in a statement , "In the spirit it's offered… made this for the Horse lovers. I can't stop it. The horse is runnin'. What a ride we have. I don't want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share."

Tickets are available now via Neil Young Archives presale and go on sale to the general public Friday, February 16 at 10 a.m. ET on Live Nation .
