Veteran U.K. modern rock act Depeche Mode will kick off a 24-country world tour June 15 in Montreal. The trek, in support of the band’s upcoming Mute/Reprise album, “Exciter,” will wind to a close Oct. 30 in Istanbul, Turkey. The U.S. dates — starting June 19 in Minneapolis and wrapping Aug. 14 in Los Angeles — will be sponsored by MTV2. North American venues have not yet been announced, nor has the site of the tour closer in Istanbul. Specific mid-September dates and venues in Denmark, Norway, and Finland are also pending. Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, and Andrew Fletcher will be augmented on stage out by the same musicians who accompanied the band on its 1998 Singles Tour: drummer Christian Eigner , keyboardist Peter Gordino, and backing vocalists Janet Ramus and Jordan Bailey. Anton Corbijn , who has collaborated with the band on past tours and videos, will once again provide visual elements to the Depeche Mode roadshow. “Anton is someone who doesn’t merely listen to our music,” Gahan said in announcing the tour today (March 13) in Hamburg. “He gets inside of it and interprets it in a way that always surprises us.” Due May 15, “Exciter” will be led by first single “Dream On,” which has received some early airplay on modern rock radio stations in Salt Lake City (KENZ and KXRK), WPLA Jacksonville, and WKRL Syracuse. A commercial single will be released April 23 in the U.K. and a day later in the U.S. A supporting video, directed by Stephane Sednaoui (U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage) was shot in February in a desert near Barstow, Calif. Produced by Mark Bell (Bjork), the new album is said to include a mix of electronic and acoustic elements. The band has been offering fans a taste of the new set since January via 30-second song clips on its official Web site.
