Appu was our guide and he informed us about the nature in Malaysia and gave us a fun tour to the mossy forest and the tea plantation. Although it wasn't part of the tour, he took us to a strawberry farm on our way back! Great people, stunning nature! Go enjoy ;)

We did the full day tour with Isma. He was lovely, and made the tour really fun! We all absolutely loved him. The tour itself was definitely worth doing. Five Things To Discover in Cameron Highlands

While tourists still flock to Cameron Highlands for its natural landscape and cool clime, many fall for dull and hackneyed tours such as visits to strawberry and vegetable farms. To truly experience this charming eco-tourism destination within the Titiwangsa range of Pahang, West Malaysia, it is best to immerse yourself in the highland’s natural beauty, biodiversity, heritage and culture... and learning something about the forest ecology too. Mallika Naguran , who's been to Cameron Highlands numerous times as a kid and still visits, shares some pointers.

Bird Watching at Cameron Highlands

Mountain Bulbuls are a common sight in Cameron Highlands, which has listed 177 bird species.

You don’t need to go too far to encounter birds when you are in Cameron Highlands. From your balcony, colourful montane birds - ones you might not have seen before - will fly past or perch on shrubs close by. Song birds rouse you gently as you wake up to a sunlit morning bathed in fresh mountain air. 

Second to Frasers Hills in terms of listed bird species variety, Cameron Highlands has recorded 177 bird species as stated in Montane Birds of Cameron Highlands by REACH. These include the numerous and cheerful Silver-eared Mesia, Oriental Magpie-robin, Streaked Spiderhunter, Black-throated Sunbird, Mountain Bulbul, Yellow-vented Bulbul and more. As an amateur bird watcher, I recorded 30 species on my own, mostly from my rented apartment in Tanah Rata, and the rest from morning walks.

Cameron Highlands’ increased development continues to impact forest cover and natural habitats severely, though. The Malaysian Whistling-thrush and the Mountain Peacock-pheasant, whose populations are dwindling due to increased agricultural land conversion and poaching activities, have ended up in the 2004 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. 

Still there are plentiful birds to spy on. Arrangements can be made with local tour operators such as Eco Cameron to take you bird watching for a fee. Common spots for birdwatching are Parit Falls (Path 4), Boh tea plantation and Brinchang trails.

Walking along the stream of Parit Waterfall (Path 4) in Cameron Highlands is a treat for bird watchers.

But of course, you can explore bird sites on your own. It is mostly safe even for single women to wander and discover these trails (I am still alive and well as I write this). Sometimes that’s the best way to meet others who are solitary trekkers, photographers or artists with a sketch book.

Do check on the status of Path 9 to Robinson Waterfall as sporadic knife-point thefts have been reported there and it is still unclear if the crazy chap has been arrested. 

Genuine Trekking in Cameron's Montane Forest

Whether you are a seasoned trekker or a beginner, there are numerous trails that take you around and into the heart of the montane forests. These trails are located in various districts within Cameron Highlands that sit on elevations ranging from 1,100 m (3,600 ft) to around 1,600 m (5,200 ft). 

Tanah Rata town itself is nestled on a plateau at 1,540 m (5,050 ft) elevation. Mountain summits chalk fairly impressive heights: Gunung Jasar at 1,696 m (5,565 ft), Gunung Berembun at 1,841 m (6,041 ft), Gunung Brinchang at 2,031 m (6,666 ft) and Gunung Irau at 2,090 m (6,858 feet). Not all trails take you right up to the summits though, but they are among the best that eco-tourism can offer.

To my knowledge, there are 12 cultivated walking trails into the forest and these are Paths 1 to 9, Path 9A, and Path 10, plus the Mossy Forest track that is unmarked on the tourist maps (available for purchase at local shops for RM3). As these forest trails are not paved or concretised, most may notbe suitable for those with cranky knees or bad backs.

The ancient surviving fern Matania pectinate is a rare find in Cameron Highlands.

According to Jason there are more than 4,000 mushroom species - of which 70% have yet to be described. If you love flowers, well there are more than 500 recorded species just in Cameron Highlands alone and about 260 fern species in Malaysia, says Jason. Now that’s a lot of plants to discover!

The ant fern plant Lecanopteris carnosa can be found on branches and tree tops in Cameron Highlands.

Beetles and butterflies buzz about as you walk for tea or trek. Cameron Highlands has attracted scientists who study insects and are delighted to find rare ones. Vasu Karuppiah, Eco Camerons' chief, is a great source of knowledge about beetles, having played with them since he was a kid and is someone you could touch base with if you have a similar interest.  

The huge Emperor Cicada, colourful as it is noisy, is a common insect you will hear as you get higher in the forest or even find on trees or by the roadside - dead or alive.

Cameron Highlands Heritage Discovery

Discover how it was in Cameron Highlands. Time Tunnel's exhibits include aspects of the indigenous people who still exist in the jungle - the Orang Asli.

History buffs will be interested in the remains of World War ll in Cameron Highlands. The Convent School used to be the British Military Hospital, housing the sick and maimed during and after the Japanese Occupation. The sight of the convent on a hilltop looking down at the rest of Tanah Rata still brings tears to returning survivors of war. Few have donated valuable memorabilia, which can be found at the rather eccentric Time Tunnel.

The Time Tunnel is best described as a memorabilia museum - looks rather ordinary from the outside but upon entering, it is a long passage with lots of stuff to see. Located in Brinchang and around 6km from Tanah Rata, Time Tunnel has photographs and explanations of the war, along with equipment, belongings of soldiers and civilians during the 1940s.

Time Tunnel captures Chinese street culture such as the kopi tiam where tea, coffee, kaya toast and even iced milo can be enjoyed.

There are interesting exhibits of local cultures as well such as the re-enactment of the Orang Asli (indigenous people) home and hunting tools, Chinese foodstall and barbershop. Collectors would love to browse the thousands of knick knacks from coins, toys, radios and cooking tools. Considering that it is the initiative of one resident and not the government, the Time Tunnel deserves kudos.

Cameronian black and white houses in mock Tudor architecture still exist as lodges or homes. A few are drenched with history, whatever their individual stories may be, since the 1930s where the British cultivated the highlands as a cool and refreshing refuge and summer vacation away from the heat of the tropics. The house of Jim Thompson, the American silk king, still exists long after he went missing in 1967.  

Local operators offer Jim Thompson Walking Trail but don't fall for this marketing gimmick. That bloke’s long and gone and nobody really knows where he walked to or how he had disappeared. Numerous theories exist, from being eaten alive by tigers, abducted by aliens or kidnapped by secret agents. There’s also word out that the CIA was involved, which inspired a book to be written. I’d say read the book while you’re drinking tea in Cameron Highlands instead of paying to go on a random tour that’s made up of fantasies. Which takes us to the next point. 

Drink Tea at Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands has become synonymous with tea for a good reason. As you walk, cycle or drive, sweeping valleys carpeted with tea shrubs will take your breath away if not your thirst, so stopping for a cuppa tea is a darn good idea. 

Drink tea and walk among the tea shrubs after a descent from Gunung Jasar (Path 10) and learn about the world of tea in Cameron Highlands.

Sipping hot tea brewed fresh from the plantations to warm up on a chilly afternoon or taking cover from the rain in a car - these situations are most probable as a day planned for out in the sun can turn dull and downcast. No worries, there’s always a choice of tea places, from nondescript coffeeshops to tourist-oriented tea houses. 

There are those that offer amazing views as you sit and drink tea, and these are BOH Tea House (one at Brinchang and another between Tanah Rata and Bertam Valley) Cameron Valley Tea House that is also Bharat Tea (two at Tanah Rata and one at Kuala Terla). 

The Barracks is a cafe that serves tea and scones and other local and western favourites with outdoor and indoor dining areas in Cameron Highlands. Outdoor offers garden setting while indoor doubles up as a war history gallery.

The Smokehouse Hotel offers afternoon tea in their garden setting, which is pretty when sun rays beam on the many flowers there and garden birds appear. Other places include Cameronian Inn, The Lord’s Cafe (both at Tanah Rata), Bala’s Chalet - I recall seeing vans pass by with the slogan “Take me to tea and scones at Bala’s Chalet”! 

While I have not sampled tea and scones mentioned at all of these places, I’ve enjoyed the garden setting at The Barracks , which serves scones in its original recipe and flavoured ones such as orange and cranberry, blueberry, strawberry, peanut butter, and chocolate and banana scones. They come with clotted cream and freshly made strawberry jam. Coconut scones are served with kaya and butter, talk about culture fusion! 

There are a few reviews written on where to go for the best tea and scones in Camerons, and I like what’s written on Mrs Potato Pigs Out . Still that was in 2011. No, I don’t trust Trip Advisor and its many paid or biased reviews.

One should never leave Cameron Highlands without having tea and scones. 

For that matter, to sum up, one cannot truly say one has experienced Camerons if one has not gone bird watching, forest trekking, appreciated some Cameronian heritage, and had tea and scones with lumpy jam freshly made from handpicked strawberries from the local farm.

Eco-traveller tip - take a re-usable water bottle with you for refills rather than purchasing plastic water bottles. Do not litter. Collect and keep your trash with you and dispose them at bins provided. If you can, pick up rubbish if you spot them in the forest.

Recyclable materials should be bagged and left by the side of the Tanah Rata market and at the rubbish collection point. There isn't a recycle bin there but a waste disposal truck passes by to pick up recyclables from that point.

It is a good idea to look up the community-based NGO in Cameron Highlands called REACH for conservation activities such as tree planting and pollution prevention activities such as river water quality testing. Scottie scheffler's new taylormade spider tour x putter. what makes it special, share this article.

Scottie Scheffler won over $21 million in prize money last season and was one of the PGA Tour’s worst putters. His driving and iron play were that good. He played in 23 events and made the cut in all of them, earning top-10 finishes in 17 to go along with two wins and two runner-up finishes. He did all that while finishing No. 162 in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Scheffler tinkered with different putters in the second half of 2023, benching his Scotty Cameron blade-style putter for a prototype TaylorMade Spider with a milled face at the end of the PGA Tour season. That didn’t work, so Scheffler played a few events with a blade made by the Olson Putter Company at the end of 2023 and in early 2024, but that didn’t work out either.

Then, in the days leading up to the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, Scheffler switched back into a TaylorMade Spider and won, leading the field that week in Strokes Gained: Putting. The following week, he won again at the 2024 Players Championship, finishing first in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee (naturally) and 37th in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Rory McIlroy’s prophecy appeared to be coming true because, speaking with Amanda Balionis at the Genesis Invitational in February as Scheffler struggled on the greens, McIlroy had said, “I’d love to see Scottie try a mallet, but selfishly for me, Scottie does everything else so well that he’s given the rest of us a chance.”

A few days before the Masters, Golfweek talked with Andrew Oldknow, TaylorMade’s director of product creation for putters, to learn what makes Scottie Scheffler’s new Spider Tour putter unique, how it is similar to Spider Tour X putters sold at retail and more.

Golfweek: Let’s go through a progression. Towards the end of last season, Scottie Scheffler started using a TaylorMade Spider putter with a milled face. Was the goal to create a mallet that would feel like the milled blade putters that he had before but that would provide the forgiveness or stability?

Andrew Oldknow: The goal, honestly, was to give him better alignment. While centering the ball with the alignment system, we were actually trying to get that thing to perform just like a blade.

We put a massive amount of tungsten in the front of that putter. We used all aluminum in the back. We gave it a profile of the Spider X shape, but under the backside, it really was all cut out. We were hollowing the whole thing out to get as much weight forward as possible so that the putter actually closed like a blade.

At the time, he loved the performance of his blade, he just felt like he didn’t have enough alignment out of it. True Path worked really well for him in terms of centering the ball. One of his biggest issues is he doesn’t always hit the ball center face.

GK: Got it. A blade simply doesn’t have the size to be able to accommodate a True Path-style alignment system.

AO: Correct.

GW: After playing a few events with an Olson blade, Scottie and his team asked TaylorMade for many different Spider putters with different hosel configurations, neck styles, and even different inserts. Obviously, he was very open then to the alignment system you talked about, and he wound up settling on a Spider Tour X with an L-neck hosel. That configuration is not available at retail. How much does that hosel configuration play into the way his putter swings for him?

AO: Yeah, great question. So, over the last few years, even Rory McIlroy has gone into a slant-neck version of the Spider Tour. They’re very similar, but the toe hang is going to be slightly different.

We know that toe hang is slightly more toe down with the L-neck, so that helps [Scottie] rotate and feel more blade-like performance. Again, we’re trying to get him the good feel that he wants. He’s been in the blade for the majority of his life, and winning majors and so forth in a blade product.

So, we want to make sure that when he’s releasing the putter, that it has the right feel. A slightly more toe-down putter is going to have more of a familiar feel, and so that’s been the most important thing for him.

And yes, he asked for everything under the sun and our team has done everything we can to provide him with that.

GW: I noticed on the retail putters there is an X7 in the sole in the toe area, but on Scottie’s but an X1.

GW: Does that mean anything?

AO: Yeah, hosel, that’s the type of hassle on there. We have code names for our hosels.

GW: So, the motivation for Scottie to change was really rooted in wanting to be able to align the putter more easily, and then you designed a Spider that would swing like his blade. But now, instead of hitting off a milled metal face, he’s using a grooved Pure Roll face. Is it the same one that is in retail putters?

AO: He was in the camp of wanting more metal face inserts versus the Pure Roll Surlyn insert. We provided him with milled prototypes and metal versions with different thicknesses to get different feels. And then, low and behold, Joe Ryon, who runs our putter lab, was like, “Let’s just throw one in with the actual, stock, Surlyn insert even though they’re not asking for it.” We wanted to give it to him.

The Pure Roll insert has a little bit of aluminum powder in it, so it’s 80 percent Surlyn. We’ve player-tested pure Surlyn inserts (essentially ionomer resin) in the past, but they test too soft.

GK: So that’s the same insert that is found in the retail Spider Tour putters ?

AO: Yes. The addition of the Aluminum flake slightly firms the compound to create a perfect balance of feel, sound and roll performance. And, as you can see, the score lines and grooves are angled down slightly. They will grab the ball better and get it rolling. In everything we’ve ever tested on our Quintic Ball Roll system here in The Kingdom, you will see that if you put somebody in this 80/20 Pure Roll insert, they will instantly get better numbers.

GK: What is the loft on Scottie’s putter?

AO: Our traditional Spider Tour putters have 3.5 degrees of loft, but Scottie’s has 3.1 degrees. You need some loft in there because the ball sits in a depression created by its weight. You have to get it out of the depression or else you end up just jamming it into the ground, but the grooves grab the back of the ball and stop it from back spinning.

Gallic cinephiles gave James Cameron a hero’s welcome at a Paris masterclass on Thursday, ushering the action auteur onstage with a reception so thunderous that it shook the filmmaker’s oft-unflappable public demeanor.

“That’s the record,” he said in between laughs and in a show of uncommon giddiness. “That’s the record for the longest applause I’ve ever had in my life. Thank you. This is a high point of my career!”

Dreams and Nightmares

While Sigourney Weaver flanked her longtime collaborator at the exhibition’s opening vernissage, “Proxima” director Alice Winocour stepped in to lead the talk. Still, the star actress remained a prime subject of conversation – leading to an endearing connection between the two filmmakers.

After Winocour said that she wrote many of her scripts sitting below a framed photo of Weaver as Ellen Ripley, Cameron revealed he had done the very same, writing “Aliens” for an actress he had yet to meet while taking inspiration from her photo.

And though the sequel’s visual universe built on the designs of H.R. Giger, the incoming director made sure to leave his own mark on the material by introducing the Alien Queen. “I think Giger was a little disappointed that we didn’t hire him,” said Cameron, listing off the various biomechanoid features that made the new villain such chilling addition. “But I had so many ideas about what I could do in that same area.”

“[I remembered a dream] where I went into a dark room with every square inch of the walls and ceiling covered in wasps, and I knew that if I moved or tried to escape, they would attack me dead,” he recalled. “Every horror film must go to the deepest and worst place in the subconscious [because] that’s the point. That’s what you to pay your money for.”

‘Avatar’ and Beyond

Given the event’s reflective and retrospective context, Cameron offered little new information about his three upcoming “Avatar” sequels. However, he reassured the audience that work on Part 3 is coming along for an intended late 2025 release and that the scripts for the subsequent volleys are finished, the designs nearly locked and 3D modeling just about to begin.

As for other pursuits, the filmmaker once again brought up his plans to produce a remake of the 1966 tour-through-the-human-body “ Fantastic Voyage ,” a project Cameron and his partner Jon Landau have toyed with for over a decade.

“We’ve been developing it for a number of years, and we plan to go ahead with it very soon,” Cameron said. “Raquel Welch is not available, but we think we can make a pretty good movie.”

Hope and Dread

Without giving any more specifics, Cameron perhaps offered a thematic clue when describing his appreciation for science fiction as a conduit for both hope and dread.

“Science fiction allows us to imagine futures that can emerge from our present day,” he said. “When ‘Star Wars’ came along, science fiction seemed to suddenly become very upbeat, [all about] entertainment and adventure. But the history has always been about warning, about the misuse of technology and the misuse of science.”

“Who gets to decide what’s good for humanity?” he asked. “Machine intelligence will only be a reflection of us. It’ll be us with all our flaws and all of our potentially evil intentions. Yes, that can be good, but the atomic scientists of the 1930s believed [they would unlock] an infinite power source that would abolish starvation… Instead we got Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Cold War. This is what concerns me.”

Taste for Risk

Reflecting on a career path that began with schlock before building toward some of the highest grossing – and most expensive – films of all time, Cameron saw a clear throughline in his taste for risk.

“The more established you become, the more you risk losing what you’ve already gained,” he said. “But I also think that the greatest risk you can make is not trying something new and different. There’s a tendency, when the budget gets bigger, to start to go for the lowest common denominator – and you cannot do that.”
