Dominican Republic in Pictures: 18 Beautiful Places to Photograph
Written by Lana Law and Michael Law Updated May 26, 2022
The Dominican Republic is one of the most picturesque islands in the Caribbean. Endless palm-lined beaches; lush mountains, including the highest peak in the Caribbean; waterfalls; and historical sites make for outstanding pictures.
Many tourists head to the resort centers of Punta Cana and Puerto Plata , but be sure to venture inland from the coast, and you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Smaller towns and villages are fantastic places to get pictures of sights many tourists never see.
Finally, make sure you plan some time for the capital city of Santo Domingo and its restored Zona Colonial (Colonial Center), where the photo opportunities are completely different from those found in the beach areas.
1. Cabarete
2. kite beach, 3. santo domingo, 4. downtown puerto plata, 5. fort san felipe, puerto plata, 6. las galeras, 7. playa dorada, 9. bahia de las aguilas, 10. jarabacoa, 11. punta cana, 12. el limon waterfall, 13. playa grande, 14. las terrenas, 15. paradise island (cayo arena), 16. punta rucia, 17. buen hombre, 18. puerto plata cable car.
The town of Cabarete and the surrounding areas are some of the most picturesque places on the entire Amber Coast. Here, you'll find a lively town with casual restaurants and true beachfront dining, right on the sand. To the east of Cabarete, the deserted beaches stretch for as far as the eye can see, and green mountains rise up in the distance. Swaying palm trees line the beach, and you may have some sections of it all to yourself.
Known around the world as one of the preeminent destinations for kitesurfing, Kite Beach in Cabarete is a must-see for photographers. A kaleidoscope of colorful kites fills the blue sky each afternoon when the winds pick up. This is a great place for sports photography and capturing action shots .
The windier the day, the more action you'll see. Experienced kitesurfers frequently jump to heights of 10 meters or more, sailing through the air performing tricks.
More than 500 years of history can be seen in the historical buildings of Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial . Many of the structures are restored and well maintained, while others show the effects of earthquakes and storm damage over the years. Public squares teem with people coming and going, and some just relaxing on benches. This is a wonderful city to stroll around with your camera or sit and watch the world go by.
Puerto Plata is the largest city along the north shore of the Dominican Republic, also known as the Amber Coast . This city has a good offering of late-Victorian-style historical buildings and numerous tourist attractions .
The city center is a riot of fun places to photograph. Head to Parque Central to see the main square and cathedral, then wander the nearby streets to see umbrella street , or the pink Paseo de Dona Blanca , and streets lined with the brightly painted "gingerbread" houses.
For amazing panoramic views of the city and entire coastline, take the cable car up to the top of 812-meter-high Monte Isabel de Torres .
For a bit of 16th-century history, visit Fort San Felipe. The fort is set above the seashore in Puerto Plata. Rusting cannons, the 2.4-meter-thick walls, and views of the azure waters in the distance are some of the main photo subjects. You can also find interesting angles and sights in the interior of the fort.
Las Galeras is the town at the end of the road on the Samana Peninsula . It's remote but well worth the effort to get here if you are looking for beautiful beaches. The area is famous for Playa Rincon , frequently named one of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic , but this is just one of many incredible soft-sand beaches in the area. Some are only accessible by boat. Turquoise waters, palm trees, mountains, and a lack of development mean you can grab some postcard quality beach pictures.
Be sure to take a trip out to El Cabito for a bite to eat and to snap some amazing photos of the waves crashing against the rocks below this cliffside restaurant.
Playa Dorada is the most famous beach in the Puerta Plata area. A long stretch of sand is backed by some of the top resorts in the Dominican Republic. Many of these are all-inclusive resorts full of vacationers escaping the cold or families on a holiday. Beyond the resorts to the east is an undeveloped stretch of beach, perfect for walking and photography.
Nature lovers flock to Samana to go on whale watching tours. From mid January to the end of March, migrating humpback whales converge in Samana Bay to mate and calve. Tours leave from the main dock and usually take three to four hours depending on the location and number of whales.
Bahia de las Aguilas is located in Jaragua National Park and is considered by many Dominicans to be the most beautiful beach on the entire island. Calm, clear, warm water laps at the white sand for eight kilometers. Relatively challenging to get to by car, the beach is easily accessed via boat from the nearby town of Cabo Rojas .
Located in the central highlands of the country, the lush rolling hills of Jarabacoa showcase a side of the Dominican Republic many tourists never see. One of the top picture spots is the impressive 35-meter-high Jimenoa Waterfall tumbling over a large cliff into a pool below.
Long stretches of white sand backed by luxury all-inclusive resorts are what you'll find at Punta Cana. This is the main tourist location in the Dominican Republic and it draws sunseekers from around the world. Colorful pictures can be taken of people parasailing. It's also a great place to capture family snapshots. Bavaro Beach is the main beach in the area.
One of the main attractions on the Samana Peninsula , El Limon Waterfall is an impressive sight. Water cascades out of the jungle over a rock cliff to a moss-lined pool below. Access to the waterfall is generally on horseback from the town of El Limon. The trail is steep and muddy. Swimming in the pool is allowed, although be prepared for a bracing dip - the water is generally ice cold.
Playa Grande is a wide stretch of beach on the northern coast near Rio San Juan. It's known for often having large waves and it's a popular surfing destination. Swimming is possible here, but best on calmer days. The beach is very photogenic, with rocky headlands at each end. At the back of the beach, you'll find palm trees and, in behind, small restaurants serving local dishes.
The beach town of Las Terrenas is located on the Samana Peninsula. Here, you'll find a number of beaches with palm trees leaning out over the water. The town itself has some interesting colorful wooden buildings and is also a good place to see locals going about their daily business.
Many of the local restaurants tend to be owned by French expats, and good meals are easy to come by. Enjoy lunch while looking out over the ocean.
Just offshore from the small town of Punta Rucia is the tropical oasis known locally as Paradise Island. A popular destination for day trips, this small sand island is surrounded by reefs teeming with colorful fish. On the island itself are vendors selling snacks and cold drinks. It's an ideal place for a drone shot if you've got one with you.
You may not even feel the need to go to Paradise Island when you see the long curving beach of nearby Punta Rucia. Crystal-clear waters wash ashore on powdery soft sand. A great picture can be had by framing the colorful local shuttle boats against the sand and sky with the small trees on the beach in the background.
If you are looking for a place that is truly off the beaten track and fun to photograph, make the long trek to Buen Hombre. This very small town (with limited accommodation) has a bit of everything.
Out front is a spectacular stretch of shallow oceanfront with multi-colored hues created by the reef and seagrass. In behind are rounded hills with scrubby trees that appear green from a distance. Unique shots can be had by capturing the line of ramshackle beach hut restaurants painted in bright colors.
If the wind is up, which it usually is by about four in the afternoon, kiteboarders emerge and race across the water. Some of these adrenaline junkies perform impressive aerial tricks if you want to try your hand at sports photography.
For a bird's-eye view of the city below and the rolling mountains, take a ride on the Puerto Plata Cable Car. In addition to the amazing scenery, consider a shot of the red, yellow, and green cable car itself, framed against the lush backdrop of the mountains. Pro Tip: Go early in the day for the best shots; the afternoons tend to be cloudy.

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

“On the day before our 80th show of the Celebration Tour I need to acknowledge my incredibly talented children who carried me through this Journey each of them bringing their own unique talent to the stage,” Madonna wrote in the caption of the post, which included a series of photos.
“Rehearsals began over a year ago with almost a 2 month break waiting for me to recover from a near death experience,” she continued. “They never stopped practicing… they never stopped cheering me on and supporting me.”
“There enthusiasm kept me Going!!!” she added. “They were also going to school and rehearsing every night. !! I am so very proud of them.”
Madonna ended her sweet message by sharing what she thinks her children have taken away from the experience of taking the stage with her.
“I think what my children learned the most this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you [want] to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them,” she said. “And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears. Nor will I.”

“Alright!” shouted a clearly excited Chris Robinson last week as the Black Crowes performed on stage in Chicago. “Friday night at the rock and roll show!”
Following last month’s release of their latest studio album Happiness Bastards , their ninth, the Crowes performed Friday night in Chicago at Aragon Ballroom about halfway through the U.S. leg of their current tour, a lengthy jaunt set to take them abroad next month ahead of fall and winter dates in support of Aerosmith’s rescheduled “Peace Out” North American farewell tour.
“When we saw we were coming back to the Aragon, we were very excited,” said Robinson late, noting the group’s first performance in the picturesque room in almost 25 years. “And we’re very excited to have Glyders opening for us. They’re from this town, check them out,” he continued, lauding the work of the Chicago-based, psychedelic garage rock trio (as a cardboard cutout of Chuck Berry looked on from the venue’s balcony).

“Cheers, everyone!” said bassist Eliza Weber early. Singer/guitarist Joshua Condon and drummer Joe Seger would soon find a groove during standout tracks like “Geneva Strangemod” and “High Time,” both from their 2023 full-length debut Maria’s Hunt.
Since we were first introduced in 1990, the Crowes have tallied a pair of platinum albums and three gold records, with Happiness Bastards , the group’s first studio album of original material in nearly 15 years, a worthy addition to their unique brand of southern-fried rock and roll.

“There’s a little town about 90 miles south of Atlanta called Macon, Georgia,” Robinson explained Friday night in Chicago, spotlighting the group’s roots. “Little Richard is from Macon. And the Allman Brothers Band,” he began, just one day removed from the death of co-founding Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. “But there’s another: the greatest soul singer of all time, Otis Redding,” he continued. “Well, we jumped on that song and it goes like this,” said Robinson, setting up a late take on one of the biggest Black Crowes hits in Redding’s “Hard to Handle.”
While recent tours celebrated their Shake Your Money Maker record, this one makes the case for the new project, with the Black Crowes performing six songs from it over the course of about 95 minutes on stage Friday in Chicago.
As they do on the album too, “Bedside Manners” and “Rats and Clowns,” two of Happiness Bastards ’ more rollicking moments, kicked things off Friday night.

Performing as an 8 piece group, drummer Cully Symington and keyboard player Erik Deutsch were set beside backing vocalists Mackenzie Adams and Lesley Grant atop a unique two-tiered stage built to resemble stacks upon stacks of vintage amplifiers and audio equipment.
Frontman Chris Robinson, who performed in front of a large mirror, was joined on stage by guitarists Rich Robinson and Nico Bereciartua as well as longtime bassist Sven Pipien. Festive lighting strung over, along and behind the stage flanked the group who performed under a massive “Happiness Bastards” banner hanging from the lighting rig over the stage.
“Good to see you all. Welcome to the ‘Happiness Bastards!’” said Chris early in Friday’s set. “We’ve got some new songs and we got some old ones - like this!” he said, shuffling left before pointing right at Rich on the slide guitar, ultimately bunnyhopping in reverse back to center stage as “Twice As Hard” rang out early in Chicago.

Robinson was in fine form Friday, a rejuvenated frontman shimmying about while delivering a still impressive lead vocal, with the new music cementing a once unthinkable rebirth for the Black Crowes, who’ve continually staked their claim as one of America’s best rock acts since reforming in 2019.
From 1996’s Three Snakes and One Charm , “Nebakanezer” was an early highlight in Chicago. The gnarly dual guitar riffwork of “Horsehead,” from 1999’s By Your Side followed, providing one of Friday’s more rewarding one-two punches.

While “Oh Josephine” slowed things down momentarily, “Thorn in my Pride” found the group beginning to roll, with Chris on harmonica as the Crowes delivered an all hands, Stones-like jam to close the cut.
“Everyone say hello to Rich Robinson,” said Chris, gesturing toward his younger brother. With a wave of his right hand, Rich greeted the rapturuous Chicago crowd, soon strumming in the familiar opening licks to “She talks to Angels” on acoustic guitar.

From the new record, “Flesh Wound” followed, quickly proving to be a late high spot. The saccharine-drenched affair was a blast in the live setting, conjuring up the power pop stylings of Cheap Trick as the Black Crowes soared forward in fun fashion.
The brothers Robinson leaned in close, singing into the same mic during “Jealous Again” before closing with “Remedy,” with Chris back on harp as the new “Kindred Friend” wrapped things up in the Windy City.
“What is a band, other than something you dream up?” asked Chris rhetorically on stage in Chicago. “This band started in our mom and dad’s house in the 80s,” he continued, noting the pair’s humble roots. “And that dream will continue on.”

Share All sharing options for: LIV Golf not going anywhere; “totally separate” from PGA Tour, PIF negotiations
Since LIV Golf launched in the spring of 2022, golf has been in flux, with the game’s best players competing on two separate circuits.
Many other issues exist within this reality, too. Money, equity, and, given who LIV Golf’s beneficiary is, moral issues and geopolitical ramifications have all bled into the sport.
Nevertheless, in an attempt to rectify this, PGA Tour brass and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) established a framework agreement on Jun. 6, 2023 , that not only shocked the sporting world but also set a pathway for the two sides to come together and re-establish a unified golf tour. Negotiations have occurred since then, but a finalized deal remains far away.
Yet, LIV Golf did not appear within that framework agreement then, and they do not have any influence on those negotiations now, according to LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman .
“I would love to give you insight, but I don’t have any. We at LIV are totally separate from that part of the negotiation,” Norman said in South Australia ahead of this week’s LIV Golf Adelaide event.
“We at LIV are a standalone company being invested in by the same investor interested in the game of golf. Our investor wanted to invest in LIV because he loved the opportunity of the franchise model, what he could do with it, and how we could build it out on a global platform.”
Since last June, Norman has continued to champion LIV Golf’s cause, indicating on numerous occasions that its strength as a start-up league has never been stronger.
Nobody knows how LIV will look or how it will fit into professional golf’s new structure should the PGA Tour and the PIF strike a deal.
But Norman remains as confident in LIV Golf as he ever has. He said he received numerous compliments at Augusta National , where he lingered among the patrons at this year’s Masters Tournament . Norman said dozens of people approached him there and told him they love what he and LIV Golf have accomplished.
“The support, the recognition, the comments that were made, it was almost unanimous for three straight days walking around with people,” Norman said.
“To see it and to hear it and to hear the comments they made about what’s happening to the game of golf and the go that LIV has brought to the game of golf, it was very, very strong for me. It was a very powerful three days.”
Norman, who envisioned a global golf tour in the mid-1990s, has seen that dream become a reality through LIV. He has helped bring golf to different places around the world often neglected by the PGA Tour and other major tours, such as Singapore, Thailand, and his native Australia.
In its first full year of operation last year, the event in Adelaide welcomed 77,000 fans, making it LIV’s most successful event of 2023. The “Watering Hole,” which has drawn comparisons to TPC Scottsdale’s famous par-3 16th , was a smashing success, too.
Over 100,000 spectators are expected at the South Australia tournament this week.
“This event here from last to this year is the benchmark for LIV,” Norman said.
“We get all the other events, 13 events around the world, to take a look at what we’ve delivered here, what Adelaide has delivered, what the state government has delivered, and what the local community and the region have delivered, and you go. It can be done.”
Norman’s focus remains on LIV, not on the negotiations between the PIF and the PGA Tour.
“I don’t know what’s going on over there,” Norman added.
“I really don’t want to know what’s going on over there because we are so fixated on growing and developing and building out what LIV is today and looking and doing our schedule for 2025 and going into 2026. Our responsibility is to look after our people, our players, and where we want to go.”

Chinese woman posing for photo dies after fall from edge of crater on Indonesian volcano
A Chinese woman died after and falling off the edge of a crater while posing for a photo on an Indonesian volcano known for its popular “blue fire” phenomenon .
Huang Lihong, 31, and her husband Zhang Yong were in the East Java province on a guided tour when the incident took place. The duo, in their bid to watch the sunrise, had climbed to the edge of the crater of Ijen – a volcano tourism park in the region, reported Hongxing News.
According to the police, she plummeted from a height of 75m and died from the impact of her fall. The death has been marked as an accident, police officials said.
Initially, she was maintaining a safe distance of two to three metres away from the edge of the cliff while taking the photos, the tour guide said.
He added that he had warned the couple about the dangerous points.
However, Lihong then started moving backwards to take a photo closer to a tree for a backdrop of bare straggly branches, the guide said.
She accidentally stepped on her long and flowing clothing while walking backwards, causing her to fall off the cliff, according to reports.
It is not immediately clear if she was wearing a skirt or a dress.
The Ijen volcano is known for its “blue fire” caused by the blue light emitted from the combustion of sulfuric gases.
In 2018, scores of people were forced to evacuate their homes and at least 30 people were hospitalised after the volcano started to emit toxic gases.
Mount Ijen regularly releases small amounts of noxious gases but the site stays open to the public.
Indonesia is home to around 130 active volcanoes. Millions of Indonesians live and work near volcanoes, largely because of the fertile farming soil.

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has taken the show on the road for a decade, giving cities around the country a chance to be in the spotlight.
Detroit is on the clock.
The Motor City, which was once one of the nation’s largest and most powerful cities, has bounced back from filing for bankruptcy in 2013.
Fans driving and flying into town from the league’s other 31 teams will see signs of progress from the symbolic to the significant.

AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports.
DETROIT is spelled out, each letter standing 10 feet off an embankment alongside a freeway between the airport and downtown, in an art installation that made its debut earlier this month.
A few miles away, the long-abandoned Michigan Central Station has undergone a renovation funded by Ford Motor Co. to transform the 18-story, 113-year-old train depot from an eyesore into a gem.
In the heart of downtown, where the NFL draft will begin Thursday night, a 685-foot-high tower represents the largest construction project in the city in more than a half-century as it rises from the site of the former Hudson’s department store.
With more than 50 million viewers and an expected 400,000 visitors over the three-day event, there will be a chance to change the conversation about the city.
Lions President Rod Wood pitched the city as a draft destination in 2016 and teamed up with the Detroit Sports Commission a year later to submit the formal bid to land the NFL’s annual event that gives fans from each team a jolt of hope.
The Lions and the local sports commission also partnered with Visit Detroit, Dan Gilbert’s real-estate company, Bedrock, and the Detroit Police Department to make the most of the opportunity.
“The draft here in Detroit is going to make a big step for us in making that old image go away and people having the new image of the city,” Gilbert told The Associated Press. “We’re going to be able to showcase Detroit like never before.”
That’s part of the NFL’s plan, and it has led to 20-plus cities vying for a future draft. Green Bay will host next year’s draft.
After the league had its last draft in New York a decade ago, it envisioned giving cities — particularly those in colder climates that may not host a future Super Bowl — a chance to have a signature event that would have a lot of benefits, including an economic impact.
Chicago was the first tour stop in 2015 and it generated $81 million for the community. Kansas City had it last year, sparking $164 million in economic impact.
“Another opportunity for our franchise and our city and just for the world to kind of migrate to downtown Detroit,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has turned around a franchise that is coming off its best season since winning the 1957 NFL title. “I expect it to be pretty packed. I’m excited for all the businesses.”
Detroit’s draft is expected to bring in at least $160 million, giving small businesses a boost from fans flocking in and around Campus Martius Park.
One longtime business is looking forward to more than just an increase in foot traffic.
Lauren Stovall, the business lead at Hot Sam’s, and two others representing the 103-year-old men’s clothing store and tailor shop will be onstage during the draft’s final day Saturday.
“There’s a perception of Detroit that comes from people who actually have not been here,” Stovall said. “What’s so great is when people actually come to Detroit, they are blown away, because Detroit is not what they might have thought.”
There are new hotels, high-end and trendy restaurants and bars along with a skyscraper nearing completion. Challenges continue to exist in some neighborhoods as the city continues to demolish abandoned houses, including more than 25,000 over the past 10 years. Crime has been trending down and homicides are the lowest since 1966.
“We’re not going to lose our balance patting ourselves on the back,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.
Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Detroit, county, state and federal agencies will patrol the greater downtown area. White said all the city’s police officers will work shifts during the draft, some downtown, others in neighborhoods.
Bomb-sniffing dogs and other K-9 teams will be flown into Detroit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which also has pledged to have its tactical team on standby. Intelligence agents are monitoring social media for any threats.
Mayor Mike Duggan devoted some time during his annual State of the City address Wednesday to talk about the importance of the draft turning a lot of eyes on Detroit. Visitors for the draft are “going to see a very different city,” the mayor promised.
“We have a chance to reintroduce Detroit to America,” Duggan said.
Associated Press writers Corey Williams and Mike Householder contributed to this report.
