Who Is Ed Herlihy? PGA Tour Chairman Involved In Historic PIF Deal

Herlihy worked with commissioner Jay Monahan and board member Jimmy Dunne in the merger, but what's his background?

As the ramifications begin to sink in on the historic deal that has seen the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the financial backer of LIV Golf, the Saudi Public Investment Fund, join forces to create a new entity to drive the game, details have begun to emerge on exactly how it came about – and the personnel involved.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan is one key player, while DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley would have been another. Meanwhile, on the PIF side, its governor Yassir Al-Rumayyan was also heavily involved, and is poised to become a leading figure in the game going forward.

Such was the secrecy of the deal, that even minutes before it was announced few would have predicted any kind of agreement with the PIF was imminent after months of hostility towards LIV Golf . So, who else was pivotal in getting the PGA Tour, in particular, round the table with the Saudis?

PGA Tour board member Jimmy Dunne is one, while another is policy board chairman Ed Herlihy. The Glen Falls, New York native left high school in 1965 and went on to study at Hobart College, where he graduated in 1969, before attending George Washington University Law School, which he left in 1972.

After beginning his working life as a staff attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission, he has gone on to forge a reputation as one of the country’s most formidable mergers and acquisitions attorneys. That reputation  accelerated after he joined New York law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, where he remains co-chairman.

In particular, he had an important role during the 2008 financial crisis, when a team led by Herlihy advised on deals to the tune of over $73bn, including Bank of America’s $44.7bn acquisition of Merrill Lynch and Wells Fargo’s buyout of Wachovia.

Given that background, is it any wonder Monahan leaned on Herlihy to help strike a deal with the PIF, the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, which is thought to hold assets north of $650bn?

It’s not just Herlihy's business ability that likely helped his appointment at the PGA Tour. He is a keen golfer too, and has held memberships at both Augusta National and Deepdale Golf Club on Long Island.

Like fellow board member Dunne, Herlihy has been credited by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan as playing a key role in agreeing the deal with PIF. He said: “There were two prominent Policy Board members that sat side by side with me, our chairman Ed Herlihy as well as Jimmy Dunne, and ultimately we got to the point where we finalized everything.”

Herlihy is expected to retain his position as policy board chairman of the PGA Tour following the announcement.

Top-ranked Korda cruises to T-Mobile Match Play final and will face Maguire

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Nelly Korda raced out to an early lead and beat the self-destructing Narin An 4 and 3 on Saturday in the semifinals of the T-Mobile Match Play to put herself a match away from her fourth straight LPGA Tour victory.

The world’s top-ranked player will play Leona Maguire in the final Sunday. The Irish star beat Sei Young Kim 3 and 2.

“I know she’s going to be fiery,” Korda said. “That’s just how Leona is. She’s a great competitor. I think it’ll be great to share the stage with her, and hopefully it’ll be a good show.”

Korda is trying to become the first LPGA Tour player to win four consecutive starts since Lorena Ochoa in 2008. The record is five, set by Nancy Lopez in 1978 and matched by Annika Sorenstam in 2004-05.

Korda took seven weeks off including the Asian part of the schedule after winning in January in her hometown of Bradenton, Florida. That means a victory this weekend would be her third consecutive in a scheduled event. Four players share the record of four straight, with Mickey Wright doing it twice.

Should Korda win, she will have the chance to equal that record in two weeks at The Chevron Championship, the year’s first major.

“Nelly is the best in the world right now,” said Maguire, 3-1 against Korda in team matches for Europe in the Solheim Cup, though they haven’t met in singles. “She’s on a really hot streak. It’s been incredibly impressive what she’s been doing in the past few weeks.

“It’s going to be a really tough battle tomorrow. I’ve got a big challenge ahead of me. I’m excited. I mean, that’s why you practice. You want to play the best players in the world and that’s what Nelly is.”

Korda was never tested in the semifinals, going 5 up through seven holes, needing only two birdies to take that lead. An bogeyed the first three holes before steadying herself and even winning a hole with a birdie on the par-4 10th hole.

That, however, was a temporary reprieve. An was never able to overcome the early deficit to seriously threaten Korda, who played the backside 3-over par.

“The back nine is a little tougher, so started to make a little bit more mistakes,” Korda said. “Fatigue started setting in it just a little.”

There was a tad more drama in the other semifinal. Maguire was 2 up through seven holes when Kim, the 2020 LPGA Tour Player of the Year, had an excellent chance to cut into the lead. But Maguire got up and down on the par-3 eighth, sinking a 12-foot par putt save to keep the advantage.

She picked up another shot when Kim bogeyed the par-4 10th, and the outcome was never truly in doubt after that.

“I think when you’re doing these 36-hole days, it’s who makes the least mistakes almost, especially on a golf course like today,” Maguire said. “Really happy how I played.”

Weather had been a major story during this tournament, and the temperature was 42 degrees with the players teed off Saturday morning in the quarterfinals. But the strong winds that plagued the previous two days was reduced to a breeze, and temps were in the 60s for the afternoon play.

Korda advanced to the semifinals by defeating Angel Yin 3 and 2, and Maguire beat Moriya Jutanugarn 4 and 3. Also, Kim routed Rose Zhang 6 and 5, and An beat Minami Katsu 1 up.

All the new courses will be readily available to play in modes like Quick Play,Private Match, and in Online/Tournament playlist rotations. Furthermore, the newest season brought some new changes to Challenges Mode. Without further ado, let’s check out everything new with Season 11.

  • Augusta National Par 3 Course

Interestingly, Nicklaus designed the Valhalla Golf Course, located in Louisville, Kentucky. Overall, this course features wide fairways, several water hazards, and more. Furthermore, it hosted several major championships, like the upcoming 2024 PGA Championship. The developers updated Career mode to have the PGA Championship rotate every season between Valhalla, Southern Hills, and Oak Hill.

Secondly comes Pinehurst No. 2, designed by another legendary golfer, Donald Ross. Overall, this course hosted more single golf championships than any course in America. Furthermore, this course will host the 2024 U.S. Open, and will be added to the Career Mode rotation.

Thirdly, the developers added the Royal Troon. Overall, this course now joins The Open rotation, joining Royal Liverpool, and St Andrews. Lastly, the developers added the Augusta National Par 3 Course, which they announced last week. And, as mentioned previously, all four of these courses are available to play across a wide variety of modes.

Jack Nicklaus joins the game roster, increasing the roster size to 23 playable golfers. Known as the Golden Bear, Nicklaus won the Masters six times, which is the current record for any professional golfer. In-game, he comes with his own unique set of golf clubs, outfits, and swing animation. Play as one of the best to ever do it in any mode that lets you play as pro golfers.

Lastly, EA Sports updated Challenges Mode with two new series:

  • Drive, Chip, and Putt – Allows player to compete in famous junior golf competition
  • Jack Nicklaus – Follow some of the best rounds from Nicklaus’ Major Championship victories. Also includes other memorable moments from his career.

With a new season means a new Pro Pass. The Season 11 Pro Pass features a variety of cosmetic item. Earn tokens throughout the season and complete quests to earn items like new apparel or Nicklaus’ clubs.

Furthermore, EA Play Members will be glad to know that EA Sports PGA Tour is coming to the service via the Play List.

EA Sports also released new patch notes to improve the experience. Below is a general list of improvements:

  • Jack Nicklaus’ swing animation has been added to the Store rotation.
  • Added a “Starter Bundle” which includes a set of rare specs and a currency pack.
  • New items added to the store rotation including the TaylorMade Qi10 Driver, Scotty Cameron Circle T putters, and several new apparel items.
  • Increased matchmaking search timeout from 2 to 5 minutes.
  • Updated the “In to Out” swing animation.
  • Fixed “TaylorMade MySpider – Red” left-handed version of the putter being colored white instead of red.
  • [Kiawah] Moved several shrubs and bunker footprint decals that were incorrectly placed.

  • [Select Golfer] Updated Patrick Cantlay’s picture.
  • [Store] Updated thumbnail icons for “In to Out” and “Sweep” swing animations.
  • Additional crash and stability-related fixes.

Overall, that includes everything you need to know about EA Sports PGA Tour Season 11. Between the new courses, updated Challenges Mode, and inclusion of a Legendary Golfer, this update is definitely the biggest yet. We hope you enjoy everything new in Season 11!

2021 Tour Championship leaderboard: Patrick Cantlay edges Jon Rahm to win FedEx Cup, $15 million grand prize

Cantlay opened the door late but maintained his wire-to-wire lead to cash in big-time.

For seven straight nights, Patrick Cantlay went to sleep with the number "one" next to his name in the FedEx Cup standings. On Monday morning, after winning the 2021 Tour Championship, he'll wake up with a much bigger number in his bank account: $15 million (from a massive  $46 million purse ).

Cantlay (-21) won at East Lake Golf Club on Sunday by one stroke over Jon Rahm (-20) after shooting a 1-under 69 in the final round. Cantlay started the week at 10 under after winning the BMW Championship last Sunday in a six-hole playoff over Bryson DeChambeau, and he never fell from the top of the leaderboard, capturing back-to-back events to end the season and likely the PGA Tour Player of the Year award to boot.

Holding off the best players in the world at a tournament like this -- even when you have a head start like Cantlay -- is no small feat. That is doubly true when your playing partner is the No. 1 player in the world who was aching for his second win of the season. That showed at the end for the eventual champion. After a breezy first 45 holes of the tournament, the last 27 were a bit of a war.

Cantlay closed Saturday's third round with three bogeys on the second nine (he still shot par) and opened Sunday's finale with two bogeys on the front (he still shot par). It looked as if the tournament was tilting in his favor when he stuck his approach on the par-4 13th hole to 4 feet, but he power lipped the putt, and Rahm had renewed life. That was extinguished a few holes later when Cantlay hit another approach tight, this time on the par-4 16th to 7 feet. And this time, he made the putt for birdie to go up a pair with two holes to play.

Still, Rahm wouldn't go away. Cantlay hit two bad shots on the 17th, and he had a missable bogey putt while Rahm had a good look at birdie. Rahm missed and Cantlay made, cutting the lead to one entering the 72nd hole. Cantlay slammed the door with a killer shot from 217 yards to 11 feet for an easy two-putt birdie and the one-stroke win over Rahm after his chaser ran his 19-foot eagle putt to tie past the hole.

We talk all the time about how difficult it is to go wire to wire at an event, but what we mean by that is leading after every round. Cantlay led after all 72 holes.  The staggered start, with Cantlay beginning the tournament at 10 under, is meant to provide an advantage to those who have played well in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and throughout the season, but it also heaps pressure on those who are out in front. That Cantlay was able to maintain that advantage in the face of such pressure was remarkable.

"It was tough. It was definitely different than any other week," said Cantlay of leading the FedEx Cup for over a week. "It's the longest lead I've ever held. I just tried to stay day after day in the present."

Rahm's season, too, was as amazing as it was improbable. He actually finished tied for the lowest score this week if you only count strokes played over the four rounds. Combine that with his withdrawal from the Memorial after Round 3 because of a positive COVID-19 test, and he finished a season in which he had the lowest score in the field after his final round of the tournament three different times and walked away with just one PGA Tour win. That seems impossible, but it's true.

Despite just the one win, Rahm is deserving of consideration for PGA Tour Player of the Year. However, you don't have to shed any tears for the U.S. Open champion. He missed out on the $15 million Cantlay collected but took home $5 million for second prize. Kevin Na, who finished third at 16 under, pocketed $4 million.

While there is plenty to say about Rahm's amazing year, Sunday was about Cantlay. Just like last Sunday.

It's easy to understate just how difficult it is to run from out in front for such a long time against such an elite field. Though Cantlay got a bump from the beginning, not everybody is built to sustain a lead. It's uncomfortable and difficult, even without that amount of money on the line. Consider that Cantlay is the 13th different golfer to win the Tour Championship in the event's 15-year history.

Cantlay didn't make it look easy, but he never really does. What he did do was make it look great. Giving away a lead at a tough place like East Lake is incredibly easy, and Cantlay never did it. Not for a single day. Not for a single hole. Not for a single minute of the last tournament of the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. Grades (for Cantlay and Rahm): A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the 2021 Tour Championship.

Kevin Na (3rd): What a showing from Na, who finished third in the field from tee to green despite losing strokes off the tee. He was low-key trying to play his way onto the U.S. Ryder Cup team, and he wasn't afraid to discuss that after his final round.

"I was trying to win that secret leaderboard, where everybody started from even par, to get Captain [Steve] Stricker's attention, so I could get a captain's pick," said Na. "I did the best I could. I have two runner-up finishes in the last six starts, another top-10 at a playoff event and maybe win or second here. So I mean, from where I started to finish third in the FedExCup, eight shots back, I think I'm looking strong for a pick." Grade: A+

Justin Thomas (4th): J.T. looked strong this week after an up-and-down summer. That's a good thing for the U.S. side heading into a Ryder Cup with a lot of questions. He let it rip at a win this week, and though he didn't get it, he got back to doing what he does best: flushing irons and burying birdie putts. This one toward the end was luscious. Thomas finished in the top 10 of his fifth straight Tour Championship on Sunday.  Grade: A-

Daniel Berger (T11): Berger shot the round of the day on Sunday and likely solidified his spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team in the process. His 64 was nearly five strokes better than the field average, and it was arguably the round of the tournament as he birdied the last four holes to get in the house at 8 under for the week. He stayed flushing, too, finishing fifth in this field in strokes gained on approach shots (which is not dissimilar from where he's been existing for the last few months). We'll cover the Ryder Cup hopefuls more at the beginning of next week, but that showing on last 18 holes was a big-boy performance when he probably felt at least a little bit of pressure that he needed it. Grade: A

Patrick Reed (25th): Though his performance was impressive considering he was in a hospital bed two weeks ago, I'm not sure Reed accomplished what was necessary to make the Ryder Cup team this week. He shot 1-over 71 on Sunday and finished the week 2 under, which was good for solo 25th place. The next few days will be interesting as the discussion for the 12th man on the U.S. squad begins, but even though there's a scenario in which his recent sickness and past history at team events could have worked in his favor, I don't believe it's going to this time around. Part of that is because his tee-to-green game is not where it needs to be. Only Brooks Koepka (who withdrew) and Sam Burns hit it worse than Reed this week at East Lake. He held on a bit with a good putting performance, but I don't believe it was enough. Grade: B-

Check out how the top 30 fared  winning significant prize money  in the FedEx Cup.

Cantlay needs two putts from 11 feet for the $15 million prize. Unbelievable week for him. Unbelievable two weeks.

Rahm makes par after narrowly missing his birdie putt. Cantlay has a par putt from 6 feet (not 5 feet like I said earlier). He cans it and stays up one going to No. 18.

Whoo boy. Cantlay doesn't reach the green with his pitch shot on No. 17 so now he has to get up and down for bogey to fall back to -20. He hits it to 5 feet. Big problems here.

Cantlay is having a bit of trouble on the 16h. Bad tee shot, poor approach. He'll have to get up and down for par to stay at -21.

Cantlay makes birdie on No. 16. He's up two with two to go. It's pretty much over.

OK, we'll go hole by hole until the end. Cantlay sticks his approach on No. 16 and will have a short birdie to get to 21 under, though he just missed a short birdie two holes ago.

Dan Hicks just said nobody has taken the lead outright from Patrick Cantlay so far this week. That's so difficult to do! To lead or co-lead for all 72 holes. Wow.

A s the golf world gears up for the highly anticipated Masters tournament next week, all eyes are on Tiger Woods , who appears to have made a bold decision in preparation for the event.

Wood's sex ban ahead of Masters tournament

According to sources close to the golfing legend, Woods has reportedly imposed a self-imposed ban on sex until after the tournament, in a bid to maintain his focus and dedication to the game.

In an exclusive interview with The New York Post , a friend of Woods revealed, "He's working really hard in the gym. He's eating right. He's even eliminated sex. He does that now when he's preparing: no sex until the tournament is over. He doesn't want anything to take away his focus."

The report comes amidst speculation about Woods' personal life following his highly publicized breakup with former girlfriend Erica Herman in 2023 .

Despite rumors swirling about his dating life, Woods' friend remained tight-lipped, stating, "there's no one to speak of."

Woods , who has won the Masters a remarkable five times, is undoubtedly aiming to secure his sixth green jacket at Augusta National .

Despite facing ongoing physical challenges, including mobility issues in his left ankle and chronic back pain, Woods remains determined to compete at the highest level.

Woods has an uphill physical battle before Masters

Former Stanford teammate and longtime friend Notah Begay III commented on Woods' physical condition, acknowledging the challenges he faces.

"He's trying to formulate a strategy and approach that he can work within given the constraints that he's presented with," Begay said.

"And he's got some constraints."

Despite these obstacles, Woods recently played Augusta National alongside PGA pal Justin Thomas and club chairman Fred Ridley , indicating his commitment to preparing for the tournament.

His most recent victory at Augusta came in 2019 , marking a triumphant return to form after a decade-long drought in major victories.

"He's got zero mobility in that left ankle and really has low-back challenges now, which he knew he was going to have," Begay also revealed.

"For the past couple months, he's been trying to find a way to recover," Begay went on explaining Woods' biggest hurdle.

"He can play the golf. We always knew the question was going to be 'Can he walk the 72 (holes)?' That's still up in the air. But can he recover, from one round to the next? That's the biggest question that I really don't know and he's not going to know either until he gets out there and figures out whether the way he's prepared for this year's Masters is going to work for him."

With the Masters just around the corner, the question remains: Will Tiger Woods' unconventional preparation pay off? Golf fans will have to wait until April 11th to witness the outcome as Woods takes to the course in pursuit of golfing glory once again.

PGA Tour Champions vet Ed Dougherty making Hall of Fame friends, healing through bowling

e d tour golf

Ed Dougherty was late to the game of golf.

He didn’t pick up the sport until after serving more than a year in the Vietnam War in the late 1960s, where he learned how to hit a roll of toilet paper with a bamboo stick to pass the time — when he wasn’t surviving the Tet Offensive.

Dougherty — pronounced DOCK-er-tee — returned to his Philadelphia home and became a professional golfer in 1969. It took him six years to reach the PGA Tour, and two more decades before he won the 1995 Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic to become the oldest first-time winner in tour history (47).

Dougherty and his wife, Carolyn, bought a winter home in Port St. Lucie in 1992, correctly believing his best days as a golfer were ahead of him.

He won twice on the PGA Tour Champions and earned more than $5.8 million. He retired from competitive golf in 2008 and continued his hobbies of collecting model trains and classic cars while also dealing with health issues from his war service.

At 72, unable to play golf after a fall late last year left him with a “frozen” right shoulder, Dougherty was looking for a way to stay active this winter. He went to watch some friends bowl at Stuart Bowl. He was asked to give it a try. His shoulder was able to handle bowling, not golf.

“I hadn’t bowled in 55 years, since I was in high school,” Dougherty said. “But I said, ‘Sure.’”

Talk about a late return.

Dougherty was an accomplished bowler in high school, earning all-city honors. But that was more than a half-century ago.

Fortunately for Dougherty, there was a Hall of Fame bowler at Stuart Bowl that day: Stuart resident Nelson “Bo” Burton Jr. A friend introduced Dougherty to Burton, and a friendship was born.

“I used to watch Bo on TV when I was a kid,” Dougherty said. “I knew all about him.”

At 77, Burton is still a bowling machine. He routinely bowls 300 games and has a ridiculous 234 average.

“The first time I bowled with Bo, after a couple games he said, ‘Time to get serious,’” Dougherty said. “He proceeds to roll strikes on 22 of his next 24 balls. He bowled a 300 and a 280. I had never seen a 300 on TV, much less in person.”

Burton also was impressed with Dougherty’s form.

“Ed didn’t want to impose on me, but I said, ‘I’ll get you going,’” Burton said. “He’s an athlete. It wasn’t like I was starting someone from scratch.”

Burton made Dougherty his partner in a two-man scratch league — the highest average usually gets paired with the lowest average — and an unlikely friendship was formed.

How many bowling tandems have combined for three victories in PGA Tour-sanctioned events and 18 titles and two majors on the PBA Tour?

Their needles remain sharp.

When Dougherty bowled an impressive 225 after some early struggles, Burton was quick to point out, “It used to take you two games to bowl 225 when we first started.”

“I didn’t think that was too funny,” Dougherty said, “but it was a good line.”

More: PGA Tour releases revised schedule with restart set for June

Burton has tried to pass on the nuances of the game to Dougherty, such as how to react to the buildup of oil on the lanes, angles to take on certain shots and using a straighter ball for spares.

Dougherty bought a white ball for spares, immediately taking some good grief from his bowling buddies for his color choice (most bowlers go with black).

Dougherty’s response was classic. “How do you think I made a living?” he said. “With a white ball! That’s my comfort zone.”

There are similarities between the sports, he says.

“You have to have balance, you have to picture the shot, you’ve got to think and you can’t be stupid,” he said. “You can’t roll a ball in anger.”

Alas, their league was shut down last month because of the coronavirus pandemic , leaving Dougherty again without a sport to play.

He may enjoy bowling, but not enough as, say, Burton, who had his lawn maintenance guy cut his grass so low in a spot where he can still throw a bowling ball.

In addition to his injured shoulder, which he hopes heals in several months, Dougherty also was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia four years ago. It’s believed the cancer is from Agent Orange exposure during the Vietnam War.

Dougherty undergoes a physical every three months to keep the leukemia in check. Doctors told him this is the best kind of leukemia to have, if there’s such a thing.

Dougherty got some more great advice five weeks ago, this time from his doctor.

“He asked me if I was taking this (coronavirus) seriously,” Dougherty said. “He said, ‘You have leukemia, you have diabetes and you’re 72. You’re a prime candidate not to make it if you get hit with this.’”

Dougherty is taking the virus seriously. He said he has left his house once in the last five weeks, to buy plywood for the trip back to Philadelphia this summer.

“I’m as scared now as I was every day in Vietnam,” Dougherty said.

He wants to be around at least another 10 years.

Then he can take up lacrosse.
