BabyStyle Egg Double Pushchair review

In a nutshell

The double version of the Babystyle Egg pushchair, hugely stylish, comfortable for babies and toddlers and likely to last for years, but be prepared for a weighty frame.

• Excellent maneuverability, slim-line for a double buggy, stylish, beautiful fabric colour choices, strong chassis, comfortable, sturdy.
• Not for parents on a budget, difficult to recline when used as a tandem, small basket, heavy.

When you have a baby and a three year old, choosing the right buggy is a real dilemma: your older child probably won’t need a stroller for that long so you might not want to commit to a double width pram but you still need something to transport both of them in.

Thankfully there are buggies out there which are fantastic as single strollers, and can convert easily to accommodate two children, be it twins or an infant and older baby – step forward the BabyStyle Egg Tandem.

Hot on the heels of the launch of the popular and super-stylish BabyStyle Egg last year, the BabyStyle Egg Tandem – a double stroller – has just been released.

Famous for its Oyster travel system, makers BabyStyle have geared the Egg Tandem to compete for a place as the best loved luxury double pushchair .

So what (if anything) is luxurious about the BabyStyle Egg Tandem?

The chassis is strong, and pushing it and steering it is very easy (see video above).

It has a very stylish silhouette and all the colours are modern and appealing. The chassis is available in either Gun Metal, which I have, or Mirror Finish.

The leather-style handle adds an extra level of luxury and it also has puncture proof PU polymer tyres which feature Tru-Ride Technology®. BabyStyle says these tyres last three times longer than commonly used tyres, and “offer superior handling and a smoother ride” and I have to agree.

Tell us more about how it handles

It’s very easy to push and feels strudy, even with the considerable weight of an 8-month-old baby and 3-year-old in it.

The wheels are simple to lock, you just press a button on the wheel base until it clicks and it will either lock each wheel in place or release them from being locked.

That means it’s even easier to push on rougher ground when they are locked in place, although I did find it pretty easy to push even with the wheels in the swivel position.

On the whole it gave a very smooth ride, I found it easy pushing it over grass and rougher ground in the park, and it was also great on cobbles. I had previously felt that my iCandy Peach Blossom was pretty unbeatable in terms of smoothness of pushing and ability on rougher terrain but this does surpass it.

The handle has five different heights, which is great. My husband, who is 6ft, is particularly impressed as he often finds the handlebars of a stroller slightly too low for him.

Can it handle kerbs?

It can. I find it easy to pop it up and raise the front of the buggy onto the kerb, but it is quite heavy to lift the back up!

Although this is perhaps a bigger issue if you have your heavier child in the back as I do.

It’s also worth noting, if you plan on taking this pushchair on the bus you’re likely to struggle getting it up on the big gap between the pavement and the bus.

It’s also too wide to get down the aisles on the buses near me but it’s fine to get on through the middle doors. Likewise, its slim width, 59cm (compared to a side-by-side double like the Bugaboo Donkey - 74cm) means it’s handy to get around shops and its ease of collapsing and building also means it’s a great option if you are driving.

Is it travel system compatible?

Yes, it is, and we’ve got more information on that in our Babystyle Egg single review.

How comfortable does it feel for your little one?

There is no doubt that Fergus and Rafferty are comfortable in it. The fabric on the seat unit has a lovely squishy feel and added comfort comes from the seat liner, which goes on top.

However, there are downsides. It’s not so easy to interact with either child when using the buggy, as when you use it as a tandem with two seat units, both kids have to face forward and there isn’t a little spy hole flap in the hood to have a peek.

Also the clasp of the five-point harness is quite easy to open (I have seen my three year old open a stiffer clasp when he was a toddler) and the clasp doesn’t feel as strong as on other pushchairs.

My 8-month-old baby son Rafferty is harder to please in a buggy so I sit him in the front seat to keep him distracted, but if he falls asleep I can’t recline the front seat without it really impinging on my son Fergus in the lower seat unit behind him, which is not great. Also Rafferty gets quite clingy when he’s tired so it’s a shame I can’t face him to me to comfort him when it’s a tandem.

What about its fold?

For this type of stroller, it’s very easy to fold. But there is no getting around it, it takes up a lot of room compared to an umbrella fold pushchair but it takes up slightly less room than my iCandy Peach 3.

The wheels are freestanding when closed which helps while storing it.

How do you fold it?

You need to take the seat units and adaptors off first, all by pushing down on the pale grey buttons by the sides of the seat units and on the top of each adaptor.

You then twist the middle section of the handlebar towards you, then gently ease the handlebar to the floor.

Lift the carry handle and the wheels swing towards you and you secure it with the latch.

How easy is it to store?

Because you can’t just fold it down in one, I tend to either keep it fully constructed in our house or collapse it and keep it in the car.

However if you want to keep it in the house it helps that the wheels are freestanding when folded.

Does it fit in the boot of your car?

Yes it fits in our boot easily although there isn’t loads of room left to fit much else in.

What do you think of the basket?

The basket is pretty small and if you are using it with the tandem seat unit its size is reduced even further because the lower seat unit sits just over half the basket making it hard to make much use of.

How does it compare to other popular double/tandem buggies?

Costing £868 for the pushchair with two seats, BabyStyle has positioned the Egg Tandem in the same market as the iCandy Peach Blossom 3 (£955, 17.4kg) , to which it bears a resemblance in the style, size and weight (the BabyStyle Egg Tandem weighs 17.5kg).

Pricewise, it’s comparable to the UPPAbaby Vista (£873.95) . In double mode the Babystyle Egg Tandem has 6 seating configurations, while the Vista has 8. Where they differ significantly is the weight. The Vista weighs a rather light 15.2kg, while the BabyStyle Egg Tandem comes in at 17.5kg.

The Joolz Geo Double may be as stylish and weigh a nifty 15.1kg, but it remains a pricier option at (£999).

But the Egg Tandem compares unfavourably against the Phil & Teds Verve Inline Double buggy (£698) in terms of it’s compactness when stored – the Verve can be collapsed as one unit and measures just 86cm by 31.5cm depth, even with both seats attached, while the Egg Tandem needs to be taken apart to store.

Meanwhile it’s a more expensive choice than the iCandy Apple 2 Pear (£580) which is a featherweight 12.5kg by comparison. But it remains comfortably more affordable than the Bugaboo Donkey , which is an eye-watering £1,199, (although this does include a carrycot) and due to it being a side by side double it is considerably wider at 74cm than the BabyStyle Egg Tandem 59cm.

It’s also different in the fact that the Bugaboo Donkey sits the children side by side, but it’s very clearly a top of the range buggy. I like the fact it’s an excellent stand-alone single buggy that you can convert easily into a double and back again. With the Bugaboo Donkey, you still have some extra width to manage when it’s a single before you convert it.

Is the product value for money?

There is no getting away from the fact it’s a very expensive product, but if it’s something you are going to use every day for years, and if you can afford it, it’s a great buy. The chassis feels very durable and strong, although I am not sure how durable the fabric on the hoods is.

The Egg tandem stroller is £907 which includes the chassis, seat unit, insect cover, hood, apron, rain cover and seat liner, tandem adaptors and tandem seat unit, rain cover.

Again, for a luxury pushchair it is good value – the Joolz Geo Duo costs £999 but doesn’t even include rain covers. And it’s cheaper than the iCandy Peach Blossom 3 (which starts from £860 and goes to around £1197) and the Bugaboo Donkey at £1,199.

Is it easy to build?

It was very easy to put together; the instructions were clear but it was also quite intuitive. Once it was out of the packaging it took minutes to assemble the first time. In fact, my three old Fergus helped put the wheels on. It was very easy to put together, the seat units arrived fully assembled, I just had to push the bumper bar onto the upper seat unit. MadeForMums verdict:

A stylish tandem buggy with many well thought out features and which can last for years. It can grow with your family – and shrink again. Although it comes with a hefty price tag, it's still cheaper than other buggies in its class.

It’s a fantastic pushchair for anyone with either twins or a baby and toddler. It’s great if you like walking long distances because the seats are comfortable for your children and it’s also very easy to push.

Babystyle Egg 2

The Egg is the second generation of the Babystyle brand's flagship high-end model. The name of the stroller, inspired by the rounded lines reminiscent of a chicken egg, stays true even with the second iteration that came out at the end of 2020.

The second gen got numerous important updates: a large, silent ventilation window on the canopy of the seat unit as well as of the bassinet; a new auto-locking mechanism to unfold your chassis easier - while the handlebar of the folded self-standing stroller doesn't touch the ground anymore; a new carrycot design with a quick-release lever in the rear part instead of two buttons on the sides; larger Tru-Ride wheels in a new, tri-spoke design; comfier, quality UPF50+ protective fabrics; new head hugger design easily adjustable to fit the shoulder straps better to your child's size; a more spacious seat unit with a 59cm backrest height while being 3.6 cm higher on the chassis; and a new design of the changing bag for the parent, now in the form of an elegant backpack.

As a single model (for one child), the Egg can take up to 25 kg in the main seat. The bucket-type, L-shaped ergonomic seat unit can be reclined fully by tilting it to a laying position. For your newborn, a full-size carrycot of generous internal dimensions is available, and car seat adapters can be used with most well-known car seat brands.

You can also convert the Egg into a tandem version with the sibling adapter. The tandem set-up can hold up to 15 kg per child. The Egg in double mode can be used for children with a small age gap as well as for twins right from birth. The stroller accepts two seats, two carrycots, two car seats, or any combination of these.

The second version of Egg is available various new colorways of the chassis. The frame, equipped with wheels made of a special hard rubber featuring the Tru Ride technology, provides a comfortable ride not so far from the comfort of air-filled tires, without, of course, the threat of getting a puncture.

The egg’s smooth curves and infinite lines are immediately recognisable, and its advanced design and engineering are apparent as soon as you try the push or fold.

With a redesigned central hub, the central chassis is positioned 3.6cm higher than on the original egg, bringing baby closer to you and making tending to newborns easy when set up as a pram. Height adaptors are also still compatible with the egg2.

The carrycot or seat unit has to be removed before folding, but collapsing the frame is a one-handed operation that leaves a very compact package, which freestands with your leatherette handle clear of the ground.

egg2 has a slightly extended wheelbase (6cm longer), which makes for an expansive shopping basket. The larger front and rear wheels feature an attractive tri-spoke design that perfectly complements the chassis. Robust puncture-proof tyres feature a unique egg-shaped tread pattern, so you’ll leave your mark wherever you go! The combination of larger wheels, tyre material, suspension and egg’s Tru-Ride technology gives the smoothest ride for your little one, superior handling for you and added durability too.

Offering three-position recline and easily switched between parent and world-facing, the egg2 seat is designed to promote comfort for longer. The new seat is 7cm taller to last your growing toddler longer, and sits slightly higher. It also features a new slider mechanism accessed via the rear of the seat to allow for the simultaneous quick and simple adjustment of the harness and new headrest. The seat canopy features a ventilation net that can also be used as a viewing window, closed using magnets sewn into the fabric.

The removable bumper bar has a gate-fold function, and there is a five-position calf adjustment with a concealed storage compartment.

The latest fabrics offer soft-touch marl tailoring in a range of earthy, on-trend colours, with matching footmuffs and backpack-style changing bags as part of this bundle. The Special Edition strollers come with a new ‘top loader’ backpack included.

One of the benefits of the egg stroller is the ability to turn it into a tandem should a new baby come along with just the additional purchase of tandem adaptors (a new version for the egg2). The taller and longer chassis has made for greater space in all tandem configurations, and for twins or close-in-age siblings, tandem seats are currently available in Monument Grey, Quartz, Jurassic Grey and Just Black.

The egg2 carrycot (available in all egg2 colours) has evolved in both its shape and release mechanism; as a spacious nest suitable from birth – 9kg, it is longer and features an ergonomic release lever positioned at the head end. Like the seat unit, it also features a ventilation net and viewing window.

The egg Shell 2 i-Size infant carrier offers a full coordinating travel system experience for your egg stroller.

Suitable for rear-facing travel from 40 to 80cm (birth to approx 15 months), the egg Shell 2 car seat meets the most up-to-date i-Size safety testing standards and features an enhanced side-impact protection shell, as well as a memory foam headrest providing optimum cushioning for baby in the event of a collision. In addition, the egg Shell 2 has enhanced inner-body padding (for use from newborn), which provides key support for both the side and upper leg muscles on car journeys. As their muscles strengthen, develop and grow, these key protective cushions can be removed, enabling baby to use the seat up to a maximum weight of 13kg.

The egg Shell 2 can be installed in the car using the adult seatbelt or the egg Shell ISOFIX base (included).

The egg Shell 2 can be used on your egg2 pushchair chassis with the use of multi car seat adaptors (included) and cleverly uses the multi-position handle of the car seat to lock it in position.

What did you like most about the iSafe Tandem Double Pram Travel System?

Tasha Lester: "The pram had large wheels making it easy to handle and good outside on all surfaces. I tried it out in the rain and snow and it performed well in both. It's also nice and easy to assemble, I managed to do it with my twins around without major fuss, which is great. Also the basket underneath is HUGE which is great. As with babies you have to take so much stuff with you."

Sam Garwell: "The pram was lightweight, easy to assemble and put down, and the basket underneath was a good size, which on my current pram isn’t."

Daisy Brockley: "I really loved the whole look and feel of the pram, it’s very sleek and modern and I love the grey fabric. It wasn’t too heavy compared to other tandems and the fact that the older child is lower when seated makes the pram feel level. The toddler seat is also really roomy and isn’t a task to get my 2 year old into. He usually hates any pram however he actually gets himself in this pram and cries when we’re getting out. He’s not uncomfortable in the seat either. It's really spacious and nice. I love the boot covers too, they make the pram really protective for younger babies and the hood being bigger cocoons them from the outside world."

What did you think of the materials of the iSafe Tandem Double Pram Travel System?

Lisa Noone: "The materials were high quality and expensive, that looked attractive."

Natalie Fulker: "The materials seem of very good quality. The pattern is nice as well and would happily use the print for boys or girls, but I’m aware it does come in different colours. The wheels also seem very sturdy and good quality."

Robin Collins: "Easy to wipe clean which is always handy! The footmuffs were good, but still needed extra layers in the cold weather."

How does this pram compare to others you’ve used?

Maralyn Fulker: "As a grandma, I’ve previously used the iCandy, which I believe the carrycots were more suited to younger babies, but this pram is good for older babies and toddlers. However, my boys are quite tall so they may also outgrow the footmuffs quite quickly!"

Tasha Lester: "It definitely stands up to the two other brands which I have tried. It's easy to control, push and steer in comparison to a side-by-side double for sure, and you don't have to worry if it will fit through any doors. It's the first pram I've had that can fit inside my house, which makes life easier when getting ready to go out for a walk. My boys seemed to enjoy sitting in this pram a lot. The only thing I'd say as constructive feedback is, the foot space in the seats don't seem long enough, the boys feet seemed to be squashed up and I had to cross their legs to fit them in and put the cover/footmuff on."

Sam Garwell: "My current pram is quite noisy when pushing. The wheels are plastic on the ground and bumpy. The iSafe however, was quiet and sturdy on pavements and grass, which I was really pleased with. The straps were a lot more supportive than my current pram so my child was secure."

Would you recommend this pram to other parents? Why/why not?

George Dootson: "Yeah I think I would definitely. Only if it was to be used as a tandem though. I think as a single it’s quite large framed and there’s better single alternatives."

Chris Hewitt: "Yes, I would. Even if it was a young family with their first child, as if they add to their family they can then add the second seat and I think that’s great."

Cal Hewitt: "I’ve already told a few people about it because I’m really impressed with it. I think it’s actually a really great pram. I expected it to be really flimsy as you can add and take off seats, but it’s actually a really, good sturdy pram. When I looked at instructions that you could add and remove bits I expected flimsy cheap accessories, but I was pleasantly surprised."

What did you think about the packaging/design of the product?

Natalie Fulker: "The packaging was good, it came very compact and folded up. The design is also good, however, I can’t work out if I can have both seat units flatly reclined if the babies were to fall asleep at the same time. This is quite annoying as I can lay my previous pushchairs' seats flat. The instructions are not very good either, which doesn’t help."

Robin Collins: "I didn’t see the packaging as my daughter had unpacked it, but she told me it was good and easy to set up, just that the instructions were tricky. I like the design and think it could be used for both boys and girls. However my daughter did tell me it does come in other colours which is nice."

Maralyn Fulker: "No concerns on the packaging although it did make out it was a single pram, as I didn’t spot the writing on the side stating it was a tandem."

Would you use the iSafe tandem double pram travel system again? Why?

Tasha Lester: "Yes I'd definitely use it again. It was great to handle on all walks, in woods, on snow, on grass. Not as much effort for me to push as a double side-by-side. I think it would be ideal for someone with a newborn and a small toddler."

Sam Garwell: "Yes, it makes life a lot easier with two children, rather than a side-by-side pram which is bulky and not practical in shops or going through doors, ideal for someone with a newborn and toddler."

Daisy Brockley: "YES! I can’t see myself using another tandem now because I’ve absolutely fallen in love with this one! It’s so much easier to use than any other tandem I’ve had and much more enjoyable to push and much more comfortable for my children. It’s perfect for us as a family (2-year-old and 6-month-old) and it’s the pram I’d choose if I was to buy again."

Are there any changes you would make to the pram?

Lisa Noone: "No, I think it is perfect."

Chris Hewitt: "The front seat doesn’t lie back properly. The buttons don’t seem to click either side when trying to lie it back, so maybe a better system for that. Apart from that, no."

Natalie Fulker: "The brakes need to be more sturdy, and also better instructions on using it as a tandem, like I'd like to know a bit clearer how to lay both seat units flat when world facing. I would also like to see a parasol and coffee cup holder attachment."

What do you look for in a pram?

Robin Collins: "Safety features, materials and a good price. I feel this is a good price, although I wondered if car seats were able to fit on it, as they do on most others."

Maralyn Fulker: "The safety and reliability of the pram and how easy it is to use and fold up. Also, what it comes with/what needs to be purchased."

Tasha Lester: "Good value, nice design. Comfortable ride for the babies and easy to use for me."

What was your first impression of the iSafe tandem double pram travel system?

Sam Garwell: "Very Good, liked the design and I hadn’t seen it before, much easier than a side-by-side double buggy."

Daisy Brockley: "It was really surprising how light it was and how sturdy it was, I really enjoy pushing it. I like the colour and the frame is really stylish."

George Dootson: "it looks really attractive and expensive."

Is there a feature you would like to see on the iSafe tandem double pram travel system?

Chris Hewitt: "Maybe a cup holder? I went for a long walk and it would have been nice to take a cup of coffee."

Natalie Fulker: "The brakes could be better as it still moves when the brakes are applied, so I wouldn’t trust them necessarily near a road. It was good that a rain cover came with it, but it would be nice to know if a parasol or a coffee cup holder could be bought as well."

Robin Collins: "Footmuffs that can go more on the child rather than fixed around the handle bars. Also a parasol for the summer months, but not sure if this is something you can purchase separately."

With just one handle pull, this side-by-side stroller folds down quickly and completely flat—no small feat for any stroller, but especially for a double. It’s definitely our favorite feature about this side-by-side double and the thing parents rave about the most. We also love this stroller’s maneuverability and that it fits through 36-inch doorways, which isn’t always the case with all doubles. The Vista is a high-quality, extremely durable convertible stroller that’s just as popular with parents who use it in its single mode as it is with those who use it as a tandem double. It’s one of the best strollers around for a growing family, built to accommodate up to three kids with the addition of Uppa’s Rumble Seat and a Ride-Along Board . (It also works for twins; it can accommodate two bassinets, two car seats or two toddler seats at the same time.) It’s pricey, but it comes with a lot: a bassinet, a rain/bug shield, more than ample storage space in the basket for up to 30 pounds of stuff and a toddler seat for kids up to 50 pounds. It’s also beautifully designed, boasts an impressive suspension system for a smooth ride (even over uneven surfaces) and is sturdy enough to withstand years of heavy use.

There’s no getting around the fact that a fully loaded Vista is tough to push and steer. It’s especially front-heavy when a toddler sits in the bottom seat, which is probably the stroller’s biggest fault. It’s also bulky, pricey and not super easy to break down.

Best More Affordable Convertible Double Stroller

If you have your eyes on the Vista but can’t justify the price tag, you’re in luck. Mockingbird is a direct-to-consumer brand that skips the retail markups so they can bring you a luxury stroller for a whole lot less. Sharing many of the same features as UPPAbaby’s Vista stroller, the Mockingbird Single-to-Double 2.0 boasts 18+ configurations and a one-handed fold at about a third of the price. Both seats are the same size and can be switched to either forward- or parent-facing. This stroller works from birth with the addition of a car seat (it’s compatible with the widest range of top rated infant car seats —just remember you’ll need adapters), the Mockingbird Bassinet or Infant Seat Insert , both sold separately. There’s also a Riding Board if that attaches to the back of the stroller and lets an addition rider sit or stand as you stroll. And we love all of the fabric canopy color and pattern options.

Overall, the Mockingbird isn’t quite as sturdy and doesn’t offer quite as smooth of a ride as the Vista—but thanks to the updated suspension in the 2.0 version it’s pretty close, which is really impressive considering the stroller’s much more affordable price tag. And much like the Vista, it can feel a bit unwieldy when you’re pushing it in tandem mode.

For another single-to-double convertible stroller option that’s a little easier on the wallet, check out Evenflo’s Pivot Xpand . It’s not quite as luxe as the Vista or the Mockingbird but it’s versatile (works for one, two or three kids using various attachments), offers a fairly smooth ride and has some really nice features like a large storage basket, modular seating, large tires and rear-wheel suspension.

Best Affordable Double Stroller

Graco Ready2Grow LX 2.0 Double Stroller - Clark

This budget-friendly double stroller is one of the most affordable on our best-of list and will save your wallet without sacrificing on features. The Duo has a ton of different riding options, which is pretty impressive considering its price tag. The stroller comes with two stroller seats, a bench seat and a standing platform, and you can mix and match as needed. It also accepts two infant car seats, making it a twin-friendly option. The other standout feature is the fold. It’s pretty compact and folds the same way as most single strollers, so although it will take up a bit more room in your trunk or storage space, it’s a definite pro. The storage basket is pretty large and each seat features a full-size canopy.

This double stroller offers a lot for the price, but there are some drawbacks. The Ready2Grow only accepts Graco brand car seats. It also has plastic wheels (not rubber), so it doesn’t ride smoothly on uneven terrain. The seats can be a bit cramped for two toddlers, and the rear seat can only be used in the parent-facing position.

Traveling with two kids can be stressful, but choosing a travel stroller doesn’t have to be. The Twin+ has all of the features we look for in a double travel stroller: it’s light, narrow, features a quick, one-handed compact fold and comes with a child snack holder and parent cup holder. At only 19 pounds and 29 inches wide, it easily fits through standard doorways and is Disney-approved. There’s even an option to turn it into a stroller for three (or four!) by adding a triple or a quad seat.

While pushing this stroller on (mostly) flat surfaces is easy, it’s not so great when it comes to bumpier terrain. There’s no option to attach car seats and the seats don’t recline completely flat, so it’s not a great choice for newborns.

There’s an incredible suspension system for a smooth ride even over bumpy terrain (it can even curb hop!) and an adjustable handlebar for strollers of different heights. It even pushes and turns easily, making you (almost) forget you’re hauling around twice the weight as most parents.

The Donkey5 is a luxury stroller and with that comes a luxury price tag, especially when you start adding on twin must-haves like the Duo Extension Set and the Twin Bassinet Fabric set. Best Eco-Friendly Double Stroller

Bumbleride has kept one million plastic water bottles out of landfills since 2011. If that’s not reason enough to love them, we’re not sure what is. (Turns out their strollers are pretty great too.) The Indie Twin is an environmentally friendly stroller that’s great for twins or for kids of different ages. This side-by-side works from birth either with the fully reclining seats + adjustable footrest or with the addition of two car seats or two bassinets (sold separately) and features all-wheel suspension for a smooth ride. There’s a one-step fold and gripped handles for carrying plus lots of convenient features like large canopies each with a peekaboo window and a roomy cargo basket.

The biggest complaint from parents is head and legroom; lots of parents wish there was a bit more, especially those with toddlers on the taller side.

Best Double Umbrella Stroller

While not the sturdiest or the most accessorized in the stroller world, umbrella strollers are lightweight, generally very affordable and super convenient for travel or day trips and make a great addition to your stroller lineup. This double umbrella stroller checks all of those boxes. Notable features include individually reclining seats and adjustable canopies, a compact fold and light weight, a carry strap for when you need to take it on the go, a fairly large storage basket and a parent cup holder.

One of the biggest flaws of umbrella strollers is that the handlebars don’t adjust up or down, making them tricky to push if you’re on the taller side. Other parent complaints include a fold that’s tricky to master without a little practice.

How We Choose the Best Double Strollers

• We analyzed results from Babylist’s Best Baby Products survey, which polled 6,000 Babylist users and asked them to share the baby products they love the most and why.
• We utilized insight from the Babylist editorial team, including Gear Editor Jen LaBracio, an expert in the baby space for over six years and a mom of two who has written hundreds of baby gear guides and personally researched and tested hundreds of baby products, including many double strollers.
• We reviewed customer reviews from hundreds of real Babylist parents.

Most parents with multiple kids close in age choose to purchase a double stroller—and use it a lot . But it’s a big investment. If you already have a single stroller and aren’t sure you want to pony up for a double, there are a few options to explore.

• Stroller boards: Some strollers offer a ride-along board for an older sibling that attaches to the back of the stroller base. There are also universal boards that work with lots of different stroller brands. Before you to this route, though, you’ll need to make sure your child is up for—and capable of—the challenge.
• Baby carrier: You can also explore using a baby carrier for your younger child and putting the older one in a single stroller. But this won’t work for twins , and will only work for as long as your second child can fit in a carrier.

There are three basic types of double strollers: side-by-sides, in-lines and convertibles. Each option has pros and cons, and choosing which one is right for you can depend on a few different factors.

Side-by-Side Strollers

Side-by-side strollers , as the name implies, have seats that are positioned next to each other.

In-line Strollers

In-line strollers , sometimes also called tandem strollers, are single-file seats with one seat in front of the other. The two seats can be the same height, but often in-line strollers have what’s termed as “stadium seating” with the back seat raised higher than the front for better viewing.

Convertible Strollers

Convertible strollers are strollers that can be used as a single stroller or converted into a double (or even a triple) by adding on a second seat and accessories . The majority of convertible strollers are in-lines, but there are a few side-by-side convertibles on the market.

What About Stroller Wagons?

Another option some families are considering when figuring out a way to cart around two little ones: a stroller wagon .

The stroller wagon—a stroller + wagon hybrid with the push and maneuverability of a stroller combined with the fun and functionality of a wagon—has been gaining in popularity recently, and for good reason. Stroller wagons can handle a variety of different terrain, hold anywhere from two to four children (some can work for infants with the addition of an infant car seat and adapters) and come with lots of accessories. They’re also, simply put, pretty fun. But there are a few things you need to think through if you’re considering one in lieu of a double stroller.

• Stroller wagons feature both pull and push functionality, but even the highest-end ones aren’t as easy to maneuver as a tradtional double stroller. They’re also bulky, very heavy and often tricky to break down. If you’re looking for something to use for walks around the neighborhood or quick trips to the park, then a stroller wagon can be a solid choice. But they’re not ideal for consistent, everyday use, if you’re trying to navigate city streets or tight spaces or if you’re getting in and out of a car all day.
• Not all stroller wagons accommodate infants, and the ones that do require separate (and often brand-specific) infant car seats and adapters. If you need to transport an infant and a toddler, you’ll need to be sure the stroller wagon you choose can accomplish that.

Size and Maneuverability

Double strollers aren’t known for being compact—but there are some that are smaller and more streamlined than others. Consider how you’ll be using your double stroller and where you’ll be storing it. Do you need a double stroller that fits through narrower doorways? Will you be keeping it in your car, in an apartment or in a garage? Will you need to lift the stroller often, or break it down for storage? You’ll want to consider all of these factors before you decide which double stroller is best for you. You’ll also want to think through maneuverability. A city family in an elevator building using a stroller day in and day out needs a double that’s easy to turn, steer and push, whereas a family who plans to use a double more infrequently (or in a different living environment) doesn’t need to be as focused on maneuverability.

How important are features to you when considering a double stroller? Things like stroller configuration, modular seating, fabric, canopy size, basket storage, an adjustable handlebar, reclining seats, cupholders and suspension are just some of the things to consider as you shop. You should also think about if you want a double stroller that accommodates infant car seats or bassinets (and in which configurations) and research the weight range of your double stroller—both for each seat individually and the stroller overall.

Double strollers are an investment, costing anywhere from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand. While pricier strollers tend to have more features such as higher-end fabrics, modular seats and better suspension, there are also many affordable doubles that are still high-quality. Consider how often and for how many years you’ll be using your double stroller and what features are important to you (and what you think you can skip) when setting your budget.

What Is the Best Double Stroller?

The best stroller for your family depends on your lifestyle and your personal situation. Consider how you’ll use a double stroller most often.

• Do you live in a crowded city or in an apartment building with narrow doorways, or will you mostly be using your double stroller in the suburbs or in a more rural area?
• How much room do you have to store a double stroller?
• If you need it for two infants, do both seats accommodate infant car seats?
• If you need it for a toddler and a baby, does the stroller have a high enough weight limit to accommodate older children?
• Do you travel frequently?

Thinking through these types of questions will help you decide on the best double stroller for your family.

What age range is best for a double stroller?

The age range for a double stroller typically varies based on the weight and height of the children and the weight and height requirements of the stroller itself. Most double strollers are designed to accommodate infants as young as a few months old up to toddlers who are around four or five years old. However, it’s always important to check the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations to ensure that the stroller is appropriate for your particular children’s age, weight and height.

Can I take a double stroller through the airport?

Yes, you can take a double stroller through the airport. However, it’s important to check with your airline beforehand to make sure that the stroller meets their size and weight requirements. You may also need to fold and check the stroller at the gate or at the check-in counter before boarding the plane. And be sure to arrive at the airport early to allow enough time for these procedures.
