  • TravelerO279 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Utah Beach Museum Solid museum that covers the Utah Beach landings and much of the background to the D-Day beach landings. A number of mementos, equipment, and artifacts to be seen here including a bomber inside the hangar. Well done exhibit which also includes a 10 minute film (runs in French and English) on the Utah Beach landings in 1944. Gift shop at the end. Bathrooms on site and free parking. Also a small eatery just outside that is open depending on the time of year. The museum rests right over a German position which you'll be able to see through the windows towards the end of the tour. Very well done and worth the stop. Read more Written March 3, 2024
  • DebMc1998 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely fascinating We visited Utah Beach during a visit to Normandy. Fortunately the weather was with us. The beach is absolutely beautiful, and only after you visit the museum you'll realise the enormity of what happened and the bravery and sadness. The museum is well worth a visit. Entry is very reasonably priced. The story of the 6th June 1944 is beautifully and sensitively told. An absolute must if you are in the area. Read more Written September 24, 2023

  • Linda R 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Another museum I suppose I love the smaller museums and they tend to stick in my memory more. Yes this was good and obviously had a lot of money spent on it. I always enjoy the before and after photos, as in France the landscape hardly changes at all! It was very informative but I sometimes get word overload and give up! I then just look at the objects which there were plenty of , so that was good. Interestingly when we got there, they could' only accept cash, fortunately we always carry both. This happened quite bit when we were in France. So take cash. Read more Written June 28, 2023
  • Kirk E 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles maybe the best D-Day museum Built inside the former German bunker that once menaced this strategic stretch of Normandy coastline, the Utah Beach Museum ranks as one of Europe's best World War 2 memorials. The museum is incredibly comprehensive in its breadth of coverage, from the ranks of the German defenders to virtually every branch of the Allied forces, while also giving space to civilian resistance efforts. There's a lot to see here, and some pre-selection is well-advised, but you won't find a more complete account of those crucial days anywhere else in Normandy. Read more Written February 3, 2023

  • R1chardN 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An outstanding museum with excellent exhibits. An outstanding museum on the coast of Utah beach. The museum is housed in well appointed buildings with excellent exhibits and use of technology. The super imposing of real war time photos on present day photos of the same location is thought provoking. Some exhibits really stand out - for example the descriptions from survivors of what it was like to ‘live’ with the Nazis when the invaded. The museum tells the story of Overlord, explains the planning and the sequence of the attacks. Read more Written October 11, 2022

Visiting the D-Day Beaches — Utah Beach

Utah Beach Normandy France

Utah Beach today is a windswept, wide swath of beach bordered by grassy dunes that wave in the breeze. It’s hard to believe this was the site of a major battle of World War II.

D-Day involved five beaches. Their code names: Omaha, Utah , Gold, Juno, and Sword . If you can, visit all of the beaches for a full overview of the landings. Utah Beach is at the west (south) end of the string of beaches.

Visiting Utah Beach Today

A visit to Utah Beach in Normandy can include the beach itself, an iconic cafe, a large museum, and a drive through the farmlands where paratroopers landed in preparation for the assault on the beach. There’s a haunted farm, countless memorials, and buildings still pockmarked with bullet holes. I spent two days in the Utah Beach area, and it was a dream come true for me. Here are some of my favorite experiences.

Utah Beach Normandy France

The Roosevelt Cafe at Utah Beach

This historic restaurant and shop on Utah beach once was a fisherman’s cabin. The Germans used it during World War II as a center for designing the defenses known as the Atlantic Wall. They added a concrete bunker in the back that you can see today. Until June 6, 1944, they used this for communications. The Allies took over on D-Day and used the bunker for naval communications for the next several months. It was soon renamed to honor one of the heroes of Utah Beach.

The Normandy Countryside Behind Utah Beach

Utah Beach Normandy France

American paratroopers landed behind Utah beach in the early morning hours before the assaults on the beaches began. British paratroopers landed at the east end of the beaches, about 60 miles away. The idea was to box in the Germans on either end. The paratroopers near Utah Beach were to disable guns pointing at the beach and link up with the troops coming by boat.

Problems arose at once, partly due to weather, partly due to more German strength than anticipated, and a myriad of other factors. Paratroopers were dropped far from their targets. Some fell into flooded fields that Allied intelligence failed to report.

Getting to the D-Day Beaches from Paris

You have several options if you are traveling from Paris to the D-Day Beaches.

By train, journey either to Caen or Bayeux. Trains leave from the Paris Saint-Lazare station. The trip is about two to two-and-a-half hours.

Book your train tickets with Trainline for easy and reliable service.

If you drive from Paris to Bayeux or Caen, allow about 3 hours. Take A13 to Caen or A13 and A84 to Bayeux.

I can recommend renting with Auto Europe.

I’ve learned that the easiest way to get from Paris to Bayeux is to train to Caen, then rent a car. The car rentals are conveniently right across the street from the train station in Caen. Then drive about 20 minutes to Bayeux. I have driven from Paris, but driving in the city can be crazy. I actually went around the Arc de Triomphe in a circle several times before finding the right exit street. And I haven’t wanted to repeat that adventure!

Where to Stay Near Utah Beach

To stay near the D-Day Beaches, you can stay in Bayeux as your base. Bayeux is a charming town in Normandy , France, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and its famous Bayeux Tapestry. It’s also the closest town to Omaha Beach. I have stayed here and loved the town, the food, and the people.

When staying in Bayeux, you have various accommodation options ranging from hotels to guesthouses and bed-and-breakfasts. You may want to opt for a hotel in the city center. That way, you are close to the sights as well as plenty of dining and shopping choices.

My favorite hotel is the Hotel Churchill . It’s in a historic building in the heart of the town. It offers comfortable and well-equipped rooms, with amenities like free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and private bathrooms. Some rooms may offer views of the city or the courtyard. And the hotel has a bar and lounge area where guests can relax and unwind. A tasty breakfast is served in a pleasant room. I found the front desk staff to be very helpful with planning your day and finding a restaurant for dinner.

Another base for exploring Utah Beach is the town of Sainte Mère Église. Famous for the paratrooper hanging on the cathedral, this is a charming small town with cafes and restaurants. Here are a few hotel options:

Hôtel du 6 Juin: Located right in the heart of Sainte Mère Église, Hôtel du 6 Juin offers comfortable rooms and is close to the town’s historical center.

Hôtel Restaurant Le Roosevelt: Situated in the town center, this hotel provides cozy rooms and a restaurant with traditional French cuisine.

Do You Want to Book a Tour?

You can visit Omaha Beach on your own. This is not difficult if you have a car. Or you may opt for a tour instead. I have visited the beaches both with and without tours. If it’s your first visit, a tour may give you lots of information and stories of the war that you wouldn’t otherwise get.

If you are coming as a day trip from Paris or wanting the enriched experience of a tour , here are good options.

Overlord Tour : Overlord Tour is one of the most highly regarded D-Day tour operators in the region. They offer small group tours with knowledgeable guides who provide detailed historical information about the events of D-Day. I went on the British Beaches tour and found the guide to be knowledgeable and engaging. I toured on a shuttle with seven other people. We enjoyed conversing about WWII. It was a totally positive experience.

Normandy D-Day Beaches Jeep Tour

Bayeux Shuttle : Bayeux Shuttle offers half-day and full-day tours of the D-Day landing sites, including Utah and Omaha Beaches. They provide transportation in comfortable minibuses and provide experienced guides. They also run tours of the D-Day Beaches from Paris.

Or book with respected Viator tours .

Quite tranquil today. Beautiful shots!

My grandfather came ashore there, I so want to get there one day.

What a fascinating visit you had. Thanks for sharing at https://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2019/09/basilica-shrine-of-saint-mary.html

Was unfamiliar with this part of the war. You enriched us all at All Seasons, Sharon with this account with so many different details that could not be missed!. A big “thank you!” Had to smile at your suggestion for me to write about my travels, family, and friends. Because I’m so familar with my own experiences, it’s hard to imagine that someone would want to buy a book with these:)

Another post filled with beautiful images and so much history and information. Outstanding! Loved our little tour.

We were there in March and the day was chilly, but the sky was blue and the surf was tranquil. It really is an awe-inspiring place. Thank you!

I enjoyed your detailed account of present day Utah and the memorials and museums. Excellent photos Sharon.

What an amazing way to experience history! I remember getting chills looking out at the Normandy beaches.

What a wonderful beach and what a history… Tahnk you for showing so many wonderful photos from your trip. So intersting to see. My father was also in the WW2. He was in the Finnish army and fighting against the Russians ///Laila http://tillklippt.blogspot.com/

I gotta remember all your posts for next summer. I am taking the kids to Normandy in June. Hopefully, they won’t be too bored, but I have always wanted to go so they will just have to tuff it out.

What a true experience in history. Thanks for sharing with us 🙂

It’s great to see you joining us on ‘My Corner of the World’ this week!

My Corner of the World

Great article, jam packed with information on a really important part of France and history. You pictures bring it to life, thank you!

This is such a great way to learn and experience the history of World War 2. Lovely pictures too!

A great way to learn and experience, World War 2. The photos are great too!

What a fantastic way to learn about the history of WWII. I would be so emotional going here. D-day is a hard day to process but you have done it so well. Thank you for sharing.

IT had to be so special to see the signature of someone you know on that wall! This is a great post, Sharon; thanks for sharing your experience; appreciate the history lesson, as well (a lot of it was new to me).

I enjoyed reading your in-depth blog and your beautiful photos! Thanks so much for visiting and commenting on my blog.

Wonderful post! My husband has wanted to visit there for years and your post convinced him that we will make the trip. Thank you so much for sharing your experience.

So much history and bravery! Lovely shots.

Such beautiful beaches! 🙂

Impressive images from D-Day beach. I was never been there, so i enjoy your pictures.

Regards Bernhard

I am loving your posts about the D-Day beaches. I’m a huge WWII history buff and I would love to visit these iconic beaches and pay my respects to those who sacrificed their lives for my and my children’s freedoms. #feetdotravel

I was so moved to see the bloodstains still on the pews in the church. This must have been an incredibly moving trip for you, especially with your family connection to the US troops that landed here. I really must bring my boys here one day. We love Normandy and we haven’t seen the Normandy beaches. Thanks for sharing on #farawayfiles

Great photos. We’ve visited the D-Day beaches three years ago. It is such a beautiful area, yet it has such a strange feel when you stand on those beaches. So tranquil, yet such a historic site.

I love your posts on WWII history. This part of France has been high on my list so it’s time to make it happen!

This is a great guide. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for this guide! I love that there aren’t many people on those beaches, they look so tranquil and quiet.

Exploring Our World’s post on visiting the D-Day Beaches, particularly Utah Beach, must be a profound experience. Such visits offer invaluable insights into history and the sacrifices made. It’s a poignant reminder of the past, helping us appreciate the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

Take a dip in the high desert at Utah’s best swimming holes

Like many swimming areas in dry Utah, Lower Calf Creek Falls rewards those with a sense of adventure © Kris Wiktor / Shutterstock

A desert state not exactly known for its wide sandy beaches,  Utah has several fantastic swimming areas and freshwater lakes perfect for a dip – provided you have a sense of adventure.

Finding a good beach or swimming hole in Utah typically requires a bit of hiking or off-road travel – and these oases are certainly worth the effort to get to on a scorching summer afternoon. Whether you want to seek out a desert waterfall or wade into the Western Hemisphere’s largest saltwater lake, here are some of Utah’s best and most interesting swimming spots.

Enjoy an oasis at Sand Hollow State Park

Located just outside the town of St George , Sand Hollow State Park is a literal oasis in the middle of the vast red-rock desert. This striking blue-green reservoir is surrounded by red sandy beaches and colorful rock formations, with the surrounding sand dunes providing a boundless playground for ATV riders. Compared to other Utah reservoirs, Sand Hollow’s waters are delightfully warm, making it one of the best places to swim in the state. You can find paddle boards, kayaks, jet skis and ATVs available for rent at the south end of the park.

Take a post-hike dip at Lower Calf Creek Falls

Water plunges over a 126ft-high sandstone cliff to form a lovely swimming hole at the base of Lower Calf Creek Falls. This dead-end canyon was used as a natural corral for cows back in the late 1800s and is now one of the most popular destinations at the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument .

Off Scenic Byway 12, 15 miles east of the town of Escalante, the hike to and from the trailhead leading to the falls is about 6 miles round trip. While the hike itself is relatively flat, deep sand can make it strenuous, especially in warm weather. Parking is limited at the trailhead and summers are extremely busy, so be sure to get there early in the morning to find a spot. Better yet, visit on a weekday or in late fall or winter – though you’ll need a strong constitution to take a dip in the cold.

An aerial shot of a boat crossing the blue waters of Bear Lake at the Utah-Idaho border

Plunge into the turquoise waters of Bear Lake

Located on the Utah–Idaho border and nicknamed the “Caribbean of the Rockies” thanks to its intense turquoise-blue color, Bear Lake is a huge, natural, freshwater lake popular with swimmers, boaters and paddle boarders. North Beach on the Idaho side of the lake is a great place for kids to swim since the water here is shallow off the shore, offering plenty of space for kids to splash and play without any sudden drop-offs.

Savor the beauty of the Uinta Mountains at Wall Lake

Many of the alpine lakes in the mountains surrounding Salt Lake City are located in protected watershed areas, which makes them off-limits to swimmers. Thankfully, the Uinta Mountains are less than an hour away and are home to hundreds of natural lakes perfect for a cold-water dip. Just a mile hike from the Crystal Lake Trailhead, Wall Lake is a local’s favorite swimming spot, and the tall cliffs at the southeastern end of the lake make for exhilarating cliff jumping.

Several swimmers about to jump off a cliff by a waterfall to join other bathers in a swimming hole at Millcreek Canyon

Skip the Colorado River and head to Millcreek Canyon in Moab

If you’re looking for a place to cool off in Moab , skip the muddy Colorado River and head to the Mill Creek North Fork Trailhead just southeast of town. With several crystal-clear pools, plenty of shade, and even a natural rock slide and waterfall, Moab’s Mill Creek Canyon is home to one of the best swimming holes in Utah.

The first pool is located just a few hundred feet from the parking area – but to get to the best pool, hike a mile upstream along a well-traveled trail to a large swimming hole and waterfall. Mill Creek used to be a bit of a local’s secret, but now that it’s well-known among visitors, the swimming holes can get crowded. Avoid weekends if you can, or arrive early on a weekday morning if you’re hoping to have a pool to yourself.

Feel the warm waters at Fifth Water Hot Springs

Getting to this popular hot spring requires a 2-mile uphill hike from the Three Forks Trailhead in Diamond Fork Canyon, about an hour south of Salt Lake City – and it’s totally worth the journey. The trail leads to a series of warm pools dammed off from the cold waters of Fifth Water Creek in a lovely forested setting, with a picturesque waterfall flowing down into one of the upper pools. Fifth Water Springs draws a crowd on weekends, so visit mid-week if you can. Better yet, make a night of it and stay at one of the backcountry campsites just downstream from the springs.

Blue, orange and gold light of sunset reflected by a pier on the Great Salt Lake

Get a bit pickled in the Great Salt Lake at Bridger Bay Beach

Taking a dip in Great Salt Lake is truly a unique experience, and makes a fabulous day trip from Salt Lake City . One of the best places to access the water is at Bridger Bay Beach at Antelope Island State Park . The water is so salty – ten times more so than the the ocean – that most people will float with very little effort. The high salt content in Great Salt Lake can be harsh on clothing, so wear an old swimsuit if you have one; also, avoid the beach in May and June, when the biting gnats are out in full force. If swimming in Great Salt Lake does not appeal, it’s still worth heading to the beach to watch the sunset over the lake: the colors reflecting off the still, endless waters of the lake are fantastic to photograph.

Marvel at Toquerville Falls near Zion

This series of picturesque cascading pools is the perfect place to cool off after a visit to nearby Zion National Park , though getting here can be quite the adventure. The 5.5-mile dirt road to reach the falls is rough and a 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended. Without a suitable vehicle, hearty travelers can always make the 11-mile round-trip hike in and out. Whichever way you get there, the beauty of the falls is totally worth the effort.

Utah Beach is the name of one of the 5 beaches in Normandy where Allied troops landed during summer 1944. This zone was handed over to American troops whose objective was to gain control over the beach and take back the town of Cherbourg. Most of our Normandy Tours include a visit to this beach

Operation Neptune: Yet Another Beach

When General Eisenhower was named Supreme Commander of the Expeditionary Allied Forces in Europe, he thereby became head of the organization of the Normandy beach landings. Operation Torch (landing in North Africa in November 1942) was an experience that allowed the General to improve his military strategies. It was decided that the landing zone in West Europe had to be enlarged and the means to do so multiplied. Significant Canadian losses in Dieppe in 1942 showed the efficiency of German defenses. Utah Beach  also served as a retreat zone in case of failed assaults on Calvados.

The western part of Utah Beach, which lies in Cotentin, was added to Operation Neptune and thus became the westernmost amphibious attack zone.

Victory at Utah Beach

Utah Beach remained the least fortified beach on the Normandy coastline. Despite a reinforcement of defenses under Rommel’s command, the terrain, composed of dunes and wetland, was determined as difficult for military troops to get around, even if Utah Beach is not far from Hoc Point and its fortifications.

At 6:30 am on June 6, 1944 , Allied forces heavily bombed the defenses along Utah Beach. This attack, carried out at a distance, was efficient; amphibious tanks were able to disembark before the enemy could regroup. When the tide receded and exposed the obstacles put in place by Rommel, military engineers managed to remove them. The antitank wall was destroyed and American soldiers rapidly advanced.

Despite the victory of Allied forces at Utah Beach, the human losses were considerable in the airborne divisions. Parachutists were among the most numerous to perish on land. The least lucky landed directly in the marshland following problems during aerial drops.

The Utah Beach Landing Museum

Founded in 1962, the Utah Beach Museum has been enlarged over the years. In 2011, it acquired additional space (3,000 meters squared) in which several exhibitions recount Operation Overlord. The museum displays a B-26 Maraudeur, an American bombardier, as well as a landing craft. The museum is located in the town of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont on the site of the historic assault. Normandy has many museums about Battle of Normandy and D-Day landings.

Once the Utah Beach landing had been accomplished, Allied forces left to liberate Cherbourg. The battle, known as Bocage, was deadly and Cherbourg was taken on June 27, 1944.

The Best D-Day Beach to Visit in Normandy (2024): Here’s How to Choose

Last Updated: January 29, 2024 //  by  Ashley Smith 4 Comments

While I’m sure you would love to visit them all, sometimes you have to concentrate on choosing only the best D-Day beach to visit in order to pack everything into your busy travel schedule. If you’ve done any research on D-Day landing beaches while planning your trip to Normandy , then you already know there are five to choose from:

  • Omaha Beach
  • Sword Beach

Each of these offers its own unique experiences, museums, relics, activities, and more. So, if you only have time to visit one , which is the best D-Day beach to visit? Well, that all depends. But this post is here to help you choose!

Table of Contents

Prefer someone else to pick for you? Check out my list of the 10 best local Normandy D-Day tours to take in 2024 or this list of Best Normandy Day Tours from Paris .

How to choose the best D-Day beach to visit

Which of the 5 Normandy landing beaches you will designate the best D-Day beach to visit will depend on several factors. Things like: your interests, your time limit, who’s visiting, and from where?

All five are worth a visit if you have the time (naturally), but choosing the best one for you can be narrowed down to a few criteria. However, if you only have one day to spend exploring World War II history in Normandy, I highly recommend you prioritize these 7 sites . (They’re spread across a few of the beach sectors.)

I do list just one beach in that post (which you should definitely check out… I’ll wait…) but read on and I’ll explain a little as to why and why that one may not be the best D-Day beach to visit for you .

Best D-Day beach to visit for Americans

If you’re an American visiting Normandy, you’ll likely find Omaha Beach to be the best D-Day beach for you. While the United States, Canada, and Great Britain all participated in the D-Day landings, Omaha Beach is one of the two American landing beaches.

In the Omaha Beach sector you’ll get to revisit one of the most significant locations in American history. As an American, when you think of “D-Day,” you’re probably thinking of the footage you’ve seen of troops storming Omaha Beach. In our minds, the two are synonymous.

visit utah beach

You’ll get to visit the beach itself (that you’ve seen in so many movies), as well as other significant locations like Pointe du Hoc where the U.S. Army defeated the Germans by scaling cliffs using grappling hooks and ladders. (One of the most jaw-dropping sites to visit here, in my humble opinion.)

You’ll be able to visit museums like the D-Day Omaha Museum and the Overlord Museum and see the many memorials to American troops. Plus, you’ll also be able to spend some time at Normandy American Cemetery , arguably the most famous American war cemetery in the world.

Check out all there is to see and do at Omaha Beach here.

Where to stay near Omaha Beach

If you’re looking to concentrate your time in and around Omaha Beach, check out these popular places to stay:

  • La Sapinière (in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer) – Right across the street from the beach itself, modest and budget-friendly, reviewers love the location, the hotel’s restaurant, and the friendly staff.
  • La Ferme aux Chats (in Formigny) – Adorable B&B, rave reviews for its homemade breakfasts, the size and cleanliness of the rooms, and the welcoming staff.
  • See all Omaha Beach area hotels here to find the best one for you .

Best D-Day beach to visit for Canadians

For Canadian visitors to Normandy, you might find Juno Beach is the best D-Day beach to visit . Juno Beach is where Canadian troops landed on D-Day and where you might find the most relatable history.

At Juno Beach, you can explore the Juno Beach Center —Normandy’s only museum dedicated to Canada’s D-Day contributions. You can also check out the Canada House —a historic home and the first to be liberated by Canadian troops—that has since become a memorial to Canadian troops.

Canada House | Visiting Juno Beach Normandy, Museums and Memorials to Visit to explore Canada's D-Day history

It’s also here at Juno Beach where you’ll find the Canadian War Cemetery . This cemetery serves as the final resting place for Canadians who died on D-Day and in the Battle of Caen the following month.

Juno Beach itself also contains a number of memorials to Canada’s fighting forces like the Canadian Gunners, the Fourth Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, the Royal Canadian Navy, and more. The Juno Beach Markers also explain the history of Canada’s D-Day beach landing with an hour-by-hour account, illustrations, and more.

Best D-Day beach to visit for Brits

Like the U.S. and Canada, Great Britain has its own Normandy landing beaches as well. If you’re visiting from England, chances are you’ll find Gold or Sword beach to be the best D-Day beach to visit.

So yes, there are two British D-Day beaches (just like there are two American beaches) and they are not next to each other (Juno Beach is in between). So you may have to choose just one, but which one is the best? Well…

Best D-Day beach to visit for aviation enthusiasts

If you’re an aviation enthusiast like myself, Utah Beach is the best D-Day beach to visit for you. Here in the Utah Beach sector, you’ll get to experience some of the best aviation-centered D-Day museums.

Utah Beach is the other American landing beach and here you’ll find:

The D-Day Experience where you’ll be able to take a trip on the C-47 flight simulator aboard a genuine C-47 from World War II that’ll make you feel like you’re actually there on June 6, 1944.

The Airborne Museum – fully dedicated to the U.S. paratroopers from the 82 nd and 101 st Airborne Divisions. You’ll get to see actual WW2 aircraft and experience another C-47 simulator.

The Airship Hangar at Ecausseville that was actually used by the French Navy in 1917. Even though it was used for other purposes in WWII (by Germany), it’s still a neat structure with a lot of interesting history.

Best D-Day beach to visit with kids

While I don’t have children myself, I have done my research on the D-Day beaches parents most recommend visiting. In this case, the most popular recommendations revolve around sites where kids can see and explore actual remains from the war. Ergo, the best D-Day beaches to visit with kids are:

  • Gold Beach – to explore the remains of the artificial mulberry harbors still on the beach and to check out the intact German battery
  • Omaha Beach – to explore the bunkers at Pointe du Hoc (there’s also a lot of sheep here!) and for a large beach on which to spend the day (yes, people spend their beach days here like any other beach)

For more on visiting World War II sites with kids , check out my full guide here.

Best D-Day beach to visit for movie lovers

If you simply want to concentrate your time in Normandy on visiting the D-Day sites you know the most from movies and TV shows, that’s fine too! (I’m a big fan of visiting the real-life filming locations of my favorite movies and shows too.) In that case, if you love the movie:

Saving Private Ryan

…(and who doesn’t?), you’ll want to visit Omaha Beach . You can check out the actual beach where the biggest and most famous amphibious landing in history took place.

Plus, you can visit nearby Normandy American Cemetery which appeared at the beginning and end of the film when old man Ryan visits Captain Miller’s grave. Watch Saving Private Ryan here if you haven’t in a while.

visit utah beach

Band of Brothers

…you’ll want to visit Utah Beach . Band of Brothers follows the American paratrooper unit known as Easy Company. So, most of the series’ D-Day focus centers on events around these two landing sectors.

In the Utah Beach sector you can visit a number of Easy Company memorials, the “Dick” Winters memorial, and even pop by Brécourt Manor (highlighted in Ep.2). You can also visit the town of Carentan as seen in Ep.3. You can watch Band of Brothers here or with either a Netflix or HBO Max subscription.

visit utah beach

The Longest Day

…you’ll want to head to… well… all the beaches. The greatest thing about The Longest Day is that it covers many aspects of the Normandy invasions.

Therefore, you’ll want to visit Sword Beach , the invasion of which by the British is highlighted in the movie. As is the bagpiper of Normandy, to whom there is now a memorial on the shores of Sword Beach. You can also visit the Pegasus Bridge here.

visit utah beach

However, you’ll also want to stop by the Utah Beach sector where you can stop by the church of Sainte-Mère-Église. The Longest Day shows the harrowing scene when paratrooper John Steele gets stuck hanging from the church’s tower. Today, you can see a memorial to him on the church—a sculpture of a paratrooper suspended by a parachute.

However again, you can also visit Omaha Beach , the invasion of which was also featured in the movie, as well as nearby Pointe du Hoc. If you have to choose between those three, well, just start back at the top of this page. You can watch The Longest Day here . (The Movieland app also has it but only without subtitles. And half the movie is in French and German.)

Hi Cassie! Yes, it’s definitely possible. For instance, take a look at the tours I talk about in this post . You can obviously drive yourself to the same places, but these will give you an idea of how much and what you can fit into a day. I also wrote this post on some of the best sites you can see in a single day. The main thing to keep in mind is that it’s about a 3.5-hour drive to the Normandy beaches from Paris, so you’ll be in the car a lot, especially if you head back to Paris that night. Even though you just have the day, it’s still a worthwhile trip for sure. 🙂

Is a Tour of the Normandy D-Day Beaches Worth It?

Debra Thimmesch Last Updated: July 10, 2023

Planning to visit Normandy and want to know if a guided tour of the Normandy D-Day beaches is worth it and right for you? Short answer: yes! It is absolutely worth it. This article, the more informative answer, will tell you what to expect from your unforgettable tour of the D-Day memorials at Normandy.

Pro Tip: Planning what to do on your trip to Paris? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. Check out our guide to Paris for more planning resources, our top Normandy tours for a memorable trip, and how to take a day trip to Normandy from Paris .

What Does it Mean to “See the Normandy D-Day Beaches”?

No doubt you’ve heard about D-Day and the importance of this 50-mile stretch of beaches to the overall war effort. It was when the Allied forces launched their massive invasion of France on June 6, 1944. They called that momentous day D-Day when over 156,000 troops arrived by land, sea, and air on the coast of Normandy.

A tour of important sites on or near the Normandy D-Day beaches will let you follow in the footsteps of the Allied liberators of France. You’ll also see how regular French citizens coped with the German occupation or even helped in the massive French Resistance movement.

Normandy tours of the D-Day sites usually include stops at Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc, the Normandy American Cemetery, the Caen Memorial Museum, and various other memorials and museums along the way. You’ll get viewpoints of the beaches and have time to explore the historical memorabilia found around these areas.

Not ready to book a tour? Find out how to visit the Normandy D-Day sites .

Areas of Interest

A thorough tour of the Normandy D-Day beaches and other sites encompasses about 50 miles of territory. It stretches from the city of Caen in the east to Utah Beach further west. As you travel along the usual route, you can imagine troops and tanks filling the now-quiet countryside with noise and chaos.

Much of your visit to D-Day sites will be along the shore of the English Channel. The French call this stretch of sea between France and England “La Manche” or “the sleeve” in English.

The serene present-day Normandy seaside is not without its scars, as you’ll see at Pointe du Hoc. Perhaps you will even find the sites haunting. However, you will also be reminded of the courage and indomitable spirit of the Allied forces as they battled to restore freedom in France and Europe.

Below are a few of the key areas well worth visiting on a Normandy D-Day tour, but you can read about more things to see here .

Caen Memorial Museum

visit utah beach

Caen is the largest city in Normandy. It is located about 10 miles inland from the English Channel and was a crucial tactical site during the war. Moreover, this battle-scarred city has been historically important since the Middle Ages since it was once the capital of William the Conqueror!

The Caen Memorial Museum tells the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. It is one of the most impressive D-Day museums in France. Different areas of the museum tell different stories. For instance, one section deals with D-Day. Another area grapples with the Nazis’ persecution and genocide of French Jews.

In yet another section, you’ll hear stories of regular French citizens coping with life under German occupation. Overall, at the Caen Memorial Museum, you’ll get the full picture of what you’ll be seeing on the rest of your tour.

Omaha and Utah Beaches

omaha beach les braves

Without a doubt, you’ve heard of both Omaha and Utah Beaches, so we’re putting them together as the two beaches that are most worth visiting. British and Canadian soldiers landed at Juno, Gold, and Sword beaches. The Americans arrived at Omaha and Utah beaches. However, the most vulnerable—and bloody—landing zone was Omaha Beach.

Utah Beach is located on the Cotentin or Cherbourg Peninsula. The invasion planners chose it because of its close proximity to the deep water port at Cherbourg. Allied forces landed on Utah Beach first. They suffered numerous casualties, although not as many as those on Omaha Beach.

The Utah Beach Landing Museum is a must-visit stop on your Normandy D-Day Beaches tour. The huge windows of the museum look out over the beach. Also, the museum’s extensive collection of D-Day-related objects, including vehicles, gives you important context.

Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial

american cemetery Normandy Day Trip from Paris

The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is located near Colleville-sur-Mer. The U.S. Army built the cemetery on the site of a temporary one for American soldiers shortly after D-Day.

Spanning 172.5 acres, the cemetery contains the graves of 9,386 dead, according to the official website. Most of them died on D-Day or in the extended Battle of Normandy that lasted until August 30, 1944.

The cemetery looks out over Omaha Beach. As a result, you feel the poignant connection between the now-quiet beach and the lines of white cross grave markers.

La Pointe du Hoc

visit utah beach

La Pointe du Hoc is a long, craggy cliff overlooking the English Channel. The Germans had fortified it and built concrete bunkers. The Allies wanted it. That’s because it was an ideal outlook position and thus strategically crucial.

The battle for Pointe du Hoc left obvious scars: huge craters resulting from the Allied attack. Visitors can stand on the edge of the craters. You are also allowed to climb into the bunkers. The experience is undeniably eerie.

Not ready to book a tour? Check out the things you have to see at Normandy .

Short answer: Yes! It is absolutely worth it!

It’s easy to get lost in a crowd of 50 or more fellow travelers. That’s why we keep our Normandy tours small so you can enjoy a group of fewer than 15 people. The smaller group means you’ll be able to have a quiet moment to appreciate where you are. Most importantly, you can interact with your guide better.

Stories and History

You’ve planned your trip to France. You’ve made reservations. And you’ve thumbed through guidebooks and felt overwhelmed. Where to begin? Well, thanks to a guided tour with a knowledgeable local guide, you can leave the guidebooks and brochures at home.

Your guide will share in-depth and sometimes surprising facts and stories . For example, did you know that according to WWII historian Paul Kaplan, Hitler thought the Allied forces would try to land further north in Calais? Yep!

As a result, the now-famous landing beaches like Omaha weren’t as well-fortified as they could have been. That seems unbelievable given the number of deaths of Allied soldiers, even just that first day. However, it could have been so much worse!

Museums included

If the Normandy D-Day Beach tour you choose includes some museum stops, you’ll rest easy knowing that the tickets have already been arranged for you. If there’s an absolute must-see museum where you’re going, rest assured we’ll know about it. More importantly, we’ll make sure you get there and get in with no hassles.

Our Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches Tours

We do our best to tailor our tours for broader appeal. So, there’s usually something for everyone on a given tour. That goes for our Normandy D-Day tours as well. There’s plenty of activity and information that history enthusiasts will find riveting. Choose between our two popular tours of the Normandy D-Day beaches and related sites.

Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches Day Trip with Cider Tasting and Lunch

Visit the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy : Map + tips

The 5 landing beaches – map and introduction.

Operation Overlord, a.k.a. the Normandy invasion, began on June 6, 1944. 5 main areas were strategically chosen by the Allies on the Normandy coast. They cover a section of more than 80km (50 miles). Code names have been given:

  • Utah Beach, the easternmost beach where the American troops landed
  • Omaha Beach where the American troops landed
  • Gold Beach where the British troops landed
  • Juno Beach where the Canadian troops landed
  • Sword Beach where the British troops landed

Here is a short introduction video of each track:

The Battle of Normandy that followed lasted until the end of August.

Here is a map to help you locate them:

Which D-Day beach to visit?

Around these 5 beaches, you will find cemeteries, batteries, memorials and museums. They are all fascinating to discover. Depending on your family history, you can choose the one that interests you the most. And if you don’t know about special family ties, here are our opinions to help you choose:

  • Utah Beach is the most fun : an open air museum, a battery and the new D-Day Experience not far away
  • Omaha Beach is the most emotional : the magnificent sculpture on the beach, the intensity of the American cemetery. We didn’t expect to feel so many overwhelming emotions as we stood in front of all these crosses lined up.
  • Gold Beach is the most fascinating visually: the remains of the temporary harbor that appear at low tide, the view from the cliffs…
  • Juno Beach is the quickest to visit – if you’re short on time, the beach and museum are right next to each other
  • Sword Beach is the most strategy oriented – no beach experience here, but the Antaltic Wall Museum in the Bunker is a unique experience and the Pegasus Memorial tells us more about this critical victory.

How to visit the D-Day beaches in Normandy?

We do not recommend public transportation to visit the landing beaches. There are some local buses, but not very frequent and with many stops for the locals. Your best options are:

  • By car Visiting by car gives you a lot of flexibility in choosing where to go and how much time to spend at each place. You can rent at CDG or Orly airports, or Caen (see our tips ) or your point of arrival in France – note that Bayeux has very few choices (read more ).

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Normandy

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
  • Think of the complete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
  • There is a lot of demand, book it early .

How long to visit the landing beaches

Let’s start by discussing a little bit about the driving times between locations. This will give you an idea of what is feasible:

  • From Caen to Bayeux = 30 min drive
  • From Bayeux to Utah Beach = 50 min
  • From Utah Beach to Omaha Beach Beach = 45 min
  • From Omaha Beach to Gold Beach = 45 min
  • Gold Beach to Juno Beach Beach = 15 min
  • From Juno Beach to Sword Beach Beach = 30 min
  • From Sword Beach to Caen = 20 min
  • Paris to Omaha Beach = 3h30

You can get an overview in one day. But for a more complete vision and to immerse yourself in the history we recommend 3 to 5 days, or even a week if you are passionate.

Which city is the most convenient to visit?

The most convenient cities to stay and visit all the landing beaches are :

  • Bayeux, a charming little town inland see the best hotel offers
  • Arromanches-les-bains, central and at the seaside, it is at the level of Gold Beach see the best hotel offers
  • Caen is the largest city in the area see the best hotel offers

STAYING NEAR THE D-Day beaches

Option 1: Bayeux

The most practical option, in our opinion, is to base ourselves in the town of Bayeux. We recommend..:

  • Hotel Domaine de Bayeux in an 18th century mansion – see prices, photos and availability
  • see all top rated accommodations in Bayeux

Option 2: in the countryside

  • Hotel Domaine d’Utah Beach – prices, pictures and availability
  • Hotel Ferme de la Rançonnière – prices, pictures and availability

Hôtel ferme de la Rançonnière

Barges and mannequins are installed not far from the museum, which allows to visualize a little better what the landing was like. But it’s hard to imagine this peaceful view with the sounds of gunfire, explosions and all the warships in the sea.

Frequently asked questions about beaches

Landing beach in 1 day.

If you only have one day to visit the D-Day landing beaches, it is best to choose one of the 5 beaches described in this article according to your interests:

  • Omaha is the most emblematic of the beaches with the sculpture and the American cemetery
  • Utah or Omaha for the Americans
  • Juno for Canadians
  • Gold Beach for the British
  • Gold Beach for those interested in temporary port engineering
  • Sword Beach and Utah Beach for the best museums (in our opinion)

What was the bloodiest beach on D-Day?

The losses on Omaha Beach were the worst on D-Day. American troops lost more than 2400 soldiers who were killed, wounded or taken prisoner.

Are the beaches of Normandy still stained with blood?

No. Without the memorials, bunkers and cemeteries, it is impossible to imagine what happened on these beaches in 1944. These are now beautiful sandy beaches where people swim in the summer.

Swimming at Omaha Beach

Can we take sand from the beaches of Normandy?

No. As in many other countries, it is illegal to take sand or pebbles from French beaches.

Visit the D-Day landing beaches in winter

You can visit the D-Day landing beaches in winter. The winter atmosphere is more conducive to introspection on their history than the summer crowds… Please note, however, that almost all museums close at least in January and early February. Closing times depend on the museum. See our article on museums . However, the beaches and many of the bunkers remain freely accessible.

Films on the D-Day beaches in Normandy

The Longest Day (1962) A very realistic account of the landing at Omaha Beach. Take a look at it before your visit, to better contextualize everything you are about to see.

Saving Private Ryan (1998) War movie directed by Steven Spielberg with Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. It is inspired by the real-life story of the Niland brothers, American soldiers killed during World War II. In this fiction, the hero goes in search of the last survivor to bring him back to his mother.

Overlord (1975) Black and white film by Stuart Cooper. Story of a young recruit and his training before D-Day.

80th Anniversary of D-Day: Operation Overlord

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you.

– General Dwight Eisenhower

On the 80th Anniversary of D-Day: Operation Overlord Tour we will follow the path of America’s best and brightest young men in 1944.

This 80th Anniversary of D-Day Tour covers the planning and launch of the D-Day Invasion, Operation Overlord. During the 8-night tour we visit the invasion beaches of Omaha and Utah and the Normandy American Cemetery, as well as other key sites in Normandy that will live in your memory.

Our D-Day historians are experts in their field and world-renowned authors. Thanks to their experience with the terrain and its history, we are able to present an 80th Anniversary of D-Day Tour that is unmatched in its authenticity. Their years of extensive research and interviews with hundreds of WWII and D-Day veterans on the very battlefields on which they fought add a personal dimension to our D-Day tours that no other WWII tour company can offer. It is a highlight to hear them tell these harrowing tales of bravery and courage of America’s heroes at the very places where they occurred.

All guests on our 80th Anniversary of D-Day Tour: Operation Overlord will attend the official June 6 Commemorative ceremonies at the Normandy American Cemetery at Colville-sur-Mer, when we will honor and pay tribute to our fallen heroes.

  • London: Tour WWII places of interest in London, including Churchill Cabinet War Rooms and the Imperial War Museum
  • Portsmouth and Normandy: Depart for Normandy from Portsmouth where Eisenhower set up the advance command post for the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF)
  • Ste-Mere-Eglise: Visit Ste-Mere-Eglise, where the effigy of John Steele still hangs from the church steeple
  • Normandy Beaches: Tour the invasion beaches of Omaha and Utah, as well as Pointe-du-Hoc, where the rangers scaled the cliffs to silence the German artillery
  • Omaha Beach: Pay our respects at the American Cemetery where the graves of 9387 American fighting men lie on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach
  • 80th commemoration ceremony: Attend the official June 6 ceremony

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Day 1 flight to london.

Guest travel independently to London on an overnight flight from USA.

DAY 2 London

Arrive in London this morning and check into the hotel, where the entire group will gather for an evening welcome reception. Our historian will treat us to our first lecture, with introductions all around.

DAY 3 London

The morning will feature key sites in London that figured prominently in WWII. We then proceed to the Churchill War Rooms, the underground nerve center for Britain’s war effort. We will also visit the Imperial War Museum, which houses authentic examples of WWII weaponry, tanks, and aircraft, and an exhibit of WWI trench warfare. Free time to enjoy London in the evening.

DAY 4 Portsmouth

Depart London for Bletchley Park where we will visit the nerve center for intelligence used in the Allied War effort, code name Ultra. Here we will see the place where the Enigma machine is housed and where the cyphers and codes of several Axis countries were decrypted during the war.

After Bletchley, our destination is Portsmouth, the seaside town that became the staging center for the D-Day invasion. Here the Allies assembled the armies and equipment for the massive undertaking. Besides the hundreds of thousands of men, there were thousands of armored vehicles and the assemblage of sea vessels: landing craft of all kinds in addition to warships that made up the flotilla for the English Channel crossing. Nearby, General Dwight D. Eisenhower set up the advance command post of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, where he, Naval Commander Ramsay, Army Commander Montgomery and staff would meet to plan the invasion.

DAYS 5-9 Normandy

We will spend days 5-9 in Normandy (five nights) where guests will visit all the key sites mentioned below and attend the official 80th Anniversary of D-Day Ceremonies at the Normandy American Cemetery.

Following breakfast, we will board the cross-channel ferry and embark for Normandy as the troops did in 1944. In the afternoon, we will begin our visit to Normandy at Ste-Mere-Eglise, one of the villages where the American Airborne Division descended on D-Day. Here we will view and explore the iconic church where John Steele and his landing on the steeple are memorialized. We also visit La Fiere Bridge where the 82nd Airborne Division successfully delayed a German Panzer counter-attack against the Allied landing forces.

We will begin “The Longest Day” at Brécourt Manor where Lt. Dick Winters with members of Easy Company successfully silenced German artillery firing on American troops landing at Utah Beach. From there we will visit Utah Beach itself, where the 4th Division landed, and the Invasion Museum that depicts their heroics. Next we will stop at Ste-Marie du Mont where the unique Renaissance-style steeple used as an observation post by the Germans still stands. From there, we will proceed to the town of Carentan where we will follow the exact steps taken by American Paratroopers during the Battle of Normandy.

There will be a visit to Pointe-du-Hoc, where Rudders’ Rangers scaled the cliffs to neutralize heavy German guns defending the expanse of beaches on D-Day.

We’ll spend the morning at Omaha Beach where the Americans landed and faced the strongest German resistance of the day and incurred the greatest losses. We will walk the beach and visit some of the German defense fortifications. We explore these sands from the tide’s ebb to the distant dunes to understand the emotions of the young soldiers of the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions as they approached the “gates of hell.”

We will pay our respects at the American Cemetery with its 9,387 American soldiers’ graves stretching along the top of the bluff overlooking the beach. In the afternoon we will view the battery at Longues-sur-Mer, a fine example of the great defenses that made up Hitler’s Atlantic Wall. We will proceed along the British Beaches from there to Pegasus Bridge, where the first shots were fired on D-Day. Here the British Sixth Airborne led by Major John Howard with a miraculous glider landing carried out a surprise attack that yielded great success in overtaking this crucial bridge across the Caen Canal.

Best places to visit in may 2024.

With its pleasantly warm weather and thinned crowds, May is the perfect time to take a trip before the expensive summer season. Considering sights, weather, traveler sentiment and annual events (among other factors), U.S. News rounded up the best places to visit in May. Whether you're looking for an outdoor adventure in a national park, a quick Memorial Day getaway or a leisurely beach vacation , you can't go wrong with these destinations. Vote for your favorite locales below to help determine next year's list.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Laguna beach, st. vincent & the grenadines, victoria & vancouver island, yellowstone national park.

visit utah beach

When May comes around in Bryce Canyon National Park, the snow is nearly gone, which means the park's main road and popular trails are likely to be open. Highs are typically in the 60s during the day, too – ideal conditions for hiking and biking this Utah park's paths. Visitor numbers start to ramp up this month, but it's still early enough in the season that you're unlikely to have to jostle for a view at the popular Bryce Point, which overlooks Bryce Amphitheater, a landscape of otherworldly rock spires (called hoodoos).

This Portuguese island chain in the Atlantic Ocean offers a little bit of everything for active travelers, from geoparks and waterfall hikes to paragliding. Though the weather here is always a bit unpredictable, the chances of wind and rain are lower in May. The water temperature also begins to warm up for must-do activities like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, and with fewer swells than the winter months, beginner surfers will feel more comfortable trying to hang ten. As an added bonus, the biggest festival in the Azores – the Feasts of Santo Cristo dos Milagres – typically occurs in May.

Travelers looking for a vacation filled with unique and heart-pumping activities should set their sights on Cappadocia. This mountainous region in central Turkey is home to a UNESCO-listed national park, centuries-old underground cities, ancient cave dwellings, magnificent rock formations and more. Plus, thanks to average temperatures in the 60s and 70s in May, activities like soaring high above the Göreme Valley on a hot air balloon tour and driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle past fairy chimneys couldn't be more pleasant.

visit utah beach

As one of the warmest and driest times of year in Palawan, May welcomes travelers with open arms. Take advantage of the minimal rainfall by experiencing all of the outdoor activities and attractions that this Philippine island has to offer –spoiler alert, there are a lot. Spend time relaxing on Palawan's white sand beaches, island-hopping or even swimming with gentle whale sharks. Water sports are popular in this destination as well, from diving Tubbataha Reef to kayaking El Nido's Big Lagoon.

Visiting Granada, Spain, in May is a no-brainer. Average temperatures in the mid-70s, blooming flower displays (at Generalife Gardens) and a full roster of events make this Andalusian city a must-visit in the spring. Día de la Cruz and Feria del Corpus Christi, two of the city's most popular celebrations, are both held in May, and travelers won't want to miss seeing Granada come alive with music, flamenco dancers and more. Save time during your trip for a guided tour of the Alhambra and strolling through the Albaicín neighborhood.

visit utah beach

May falls within this Peruvian city's winter season, though you probably wouldn't notice thanks to its consistently mild temperatures (highs hover in the 60s). This month rarely sees rain showers, and you'll encounter fewer tourists at archaeological wonders like La Catedral – which sits in the restaurant- and coffee shop-filled Plaza de Armas – and Machu Picchu – a bucket list destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 miles northwest of Cusco. If you're up for a challenge, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This difficult trek through the area's towering mountains takes about four days to complete.

With 33 beaches, this eastern Caribbean island is a sun worshipper's dream, and May temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s are perfect for basking on its white sands . Spend warm days venturing to offshore cays, exploring fishing villages and watching yacht races during the Anguilla Regatta, typically held every May. Since this is the start of the island's rainy season, the weather can be wetter and more humid than the winter months, but visitors will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations.

visit utah beach

May is a great time for a trip to this seaside Spanish city before the heat and humidity become unbearable. Can't-miss architectural marvels to check out include Antoni Gaudí's whimsical Park Güell and the Gothic-style Sagrada Família. Budget time for visiting some of Barcelona's highly regarded museums, such as the Picasso Museum, and relax at Barceloneta beach before stopping at a nearby seafood restaurant for some of the best paella in the city. What's more, the city plays host to a number of events come May, including film and music festivals

visit utah beach

Craggy coastline views, a world-famous aquarium and a superb farm-to-table dining scene draw tourists of all types to Monterey, California. Though temperatures here remain in the 60s for most of the year, rainfall drops significantly in May. Popular festivals also make this a great time of the year to visit. Come early in the month for the Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival, which showcases local artisans and craft vendors, plus a variety of food booths. And near the end of the month, the three-day California Roots Music & Arts Festival celebrates reggae artists.

visit utah beach

Visit Laguna Beach for a perfect sunny-and-70, laid-back beach vacation. May is part of this Southern California town's spring shoulder season, so you'll find fewer people on popular stretches of sand like Main Beach and Crescent Bay Beach. Plus, the quieter month is ideal for relaxation-focused activities, such as outdoor yoga and hiking. When travelers need a break from reconnecting with themselves or nature, they can check out Laguna Beach's thriving art scene, which includes hundreds of galleries, studios and public works of art.

visit utah beach

Bright turquoise water, gorgeous white sand and lush green vegetation await vacationers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Composed of 32 islands and cays, this Caribbean archipelago is perfect for a tropical getaway. May falls between the country's peak winter season and its hurricane-prone low season, making it an ideal time for scuba diving and snorkeling in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, swimming and soaking up some rays at Canouan's beaches and hiking to beautiful waterfalls like Dark View Falls. Travelers will also want to check out the country's 20-acre Botanical Gardens, the oldest available in the Western Hemisphere.

visit utah beach

Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, sits on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. Not only does this Canadian destination boast comfortable highs in the low 60s in May, it is just a short ferry ride from Seattle (less than three hours), making it perfect for a quick weekend getaway . Spend your visit strolling through the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, which are bursting with colorful tulips and cherry blossoms come May, then get out on the water on a whale watching tour. Before heading home, don't forget to shop for souvenirs along Government Street.

Considered the birthplace of democracy and drama, Athens boasts a historical legacy that is hard to top. The main reason to visit is to see the ancient city's impressive ruins, which you'll find at the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. For an additional look at Athens' past, check out the incredible Greek artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. May vacations are especially enjoyable thanks to comfortable daytime temps hovering in the mid-70s.

visit utah beach

By late May, most of Yellowstone's trails and must-see attractions are open, welcoming eager nature enthusiasts seeking a breath of fresh air. The average 50-degree temperatures provide a brisk but comfortable atmosphere for a hike on one of the Old Faithful area's trails or a kayaking excursion on Yellowstone Lake. For a glimpse of wildlife, head to Lamar Valley to view wolf pups emerging from their dens. Keep in mind that if you visit during Memorial Day weekend, you'll likely run into crowds.

With warm weather year-round (average temperatures sit in the 80s), there's never a bad time to visit Singapore. But in May, this Asian city-state on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula welcomes events such as the Singapore Cocktail Festival, the Singapore International Festival of Arts and the Singapore HeritageFest. When you're not enjoying your time at one of Singapore's cultural events, check out top attractions like Gardens by the Bay, a futuristic nature park that is home to the Supertree Observatory and the Cloud Forest.
