Experimental / Rock

Teenage USA

January 30, 2002

It's all been said so many times before. I probably don't even need to go beyond this. Half of you know what I'm going to say. I feel trite just thinking about it. And yet, as is always the case, necessity squelches the desire for originality. Here goes:

This live album, while a must-have for die-hard fans of the group, will disappoint those who are looking for an inspiringly different interpretation of the band's canon.

Live albums are tricky business. One out of fifty times, a live album provides a stunning insight into a spontaneous, dynamic performance, or a collection of particularly outstanding performances spanning a given period of time. The other forty-nine times, a live recording is little more than a collection of a band's songs run through a bulldozer and stripped of a good deal of their ornamentation, complexity, and character. And thus, the above statement comes into play. If you love the songs, you'll love the slightly different versions of the songs; if you don't give a fuck about the songs, you're wasting your time.

In the case of Eric's Trip, the live treatment does marginally alter the nature of the band's music, sometimes allowing some extra vibrancy and energy to come through, but almost always removing a good deal of the charm that makes their albums so appealing. Eric's Trip slapped together beauty and noise in a fantastically haphazard manner, jumping with reckless abandon from lazily strummed acoustic guitars to hectic, screeching feedback. On The Eric's Trip Show , the contrast between the various sounds employed by the band is greatly downplayed, replaced by a steady stream of consistently rocking numbers.

Which is not to say that there aren't some absolutely lovely songs on The Eric's Trip Show . The album opens with "Stove," a classic cut from the band's debut, Love Tara , featuring Julie Doiron's gorgeous, breathy vocals. It's all well and good, but it doesn't do much in comparison to the original, with its dreamy cymbal crashes and intensely intimate recording quality.

Indeed, the loss of intimacy is a big problem with this album, as the close-up, lo-fi recording that helped make Eric's Trip's proper albums so great is no longer a factor. The band plays their songs through, and the songs themselves are pretty damned good. On tracks like "Blinded," Mark, Chris, Julie, and Rick really start to rip shit up-- a needed blast of energy, and a nice addition to The Eric's Trip Show , but certainly no replacement for the moments of sheer brilliance that can be found in the band's albums.

Which brings me back to the original point. The songs on The Eric's Trip Show are very good songs. I'd venture to say that some of the more straight-up rock numbers actually sound better here than they do on studio LPs. But generally speaking, this album leaves Eric's Trip without some of their greatest musical assets. If you're in love with the songs, this probably won't matter to you; if you're not, this won't help. But you already knew that.

Eric Adams heads to Italy to discuss climate change and asylum-seekers with pope

New York City Mayor Eric Adams left for Italy on Friday ahead of a planned meeting with Pope Francis .

The mayor posted a video from the airplane's runway wearing a New York Knicks hat and a sweatshirt from Brooklyn's youth basketball league.

"I'm traveling to Rome because the solutions to the problems facing our city, country and planet must be solved together — by sharing ideas and strategies," Adams said. "Through hard work and faith, there is nothing we can't accomplish."

This trip comes thanks to funding from the Fratelli Tutti Foundation, which translates to "we are all brothers" in Italian, an organization Francis started in 2021. On Saturday, the group will meet for its World Meeting on Human Fraternity, which is the second in its history.

CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER

The Washington Examiner reached Adams's office for comment.

According to Adams, they will be discussing the economy, infrastructure, climate change, immigrants, asylum-seekers, affordable housing, and sustainability, among other topics. Some 30 Nobel Prize winners will also be in attendance, along with Italian national football team head coach Luciano Spalletti and Fiat CEO Olivier Francois, among other leaders. Country musician Garth Brooks will also perform for the group.

'Judge Judy' suing National Enquirer owner over Menéndez brothers article

eric's trip songs

"Judge Judy" Sheindlin is suing Accelerate360, the parent company of the National Enquirer and InTouch Weekly, for defamation regarding an article she said falsely claimed she sought a new trial for the Menéndez brothers .

Sheindlin is seeking a jury trial and unspecified “general and special damages," according to the 60-page suit filed by California attorney Eric M. George on Monday in the Collier County, Florida Circuit Court.

"When you fabricate stories about me in order to make money for yourselves with no regard for the truth or the reputation I’ve spent a lifetime cultivating, it’s going to cost you," Judge Judy told Deadline  on Monday morning. "When you’ve done it multiple times, it’s unconscionable and will be expensive. It has to be expensive so that you will stop."

The article published by Accelerate360 on April 10 titled "Inside Judge Judy’s Quest to Save the Menendez Brothers Nearly 35 Years After Their Parents’ Murder” claims Sheindlin believed Lyle and Erik Menéndez did not receive fair due process during their second murder trial in 1996, the complaint obtained by USA TODAY says.

The National Enquirer also ran the story on the front page of its print and digital editions, according to the suit.

USA TODAY contacted Accelerate360 and Sheindlin's reps on Tuesday but did not receive a response.

How are the Menéndez brothers, Judge Judy connected?

Erik Menendez and his brother, Lyle Menendez, were convicted in 1996 of fatally shooting their rich parents in a Beverly Hills mansion. The brothers shot their father , José, a wealthy entertainment executive, and their mother, Kitty, a socialite, at point-blank range with a shotgun in 1989. The pair were arrested months later after one of the brothers allegedly confessed to a psychologist and the other threatened to kill the doctor.

The Menéndez brothers' case became must-see TV as their initial trial ended in a mistrial and their second led to the conviction. The brothers were sentenced to life in prison after prosecutors proved that the two committed the murders to gain access to their parent's fortune.

The article published by the National Enquirer and InTouch Weekly included comments from a FOX Nation docuseries made by "Judi Ramos," which the show identified as a woman who was an alternate juror in the initial Menéndez trial, according to the suit. Sheindlin claims the outlets misattributed Ramos' comments to her, the complaint continued.

"It entirely misquoted its source material, which identified the speaker of the challenged statements by name—an individual identified onscreen in the docuseries as ‘Judi Zamos,’ and as an ‘Alternate Juror, First Trial,’” according to the suit. “Judge Sheindlin has never gone by the name Judi Zamos, nor was she an alternate juror in the Menendez trial.”

National Enquirer's, InTouch Weekly's article is 'tarnishing' Judge Judy's reputation

The article can no longer be found on the National Enquirer's and InTouch Weekly's websites because the outlets removed the story on April 10, the complaint reported. However, it still appears in the Internet search engine results and the News Break account run by Accelerate360, according to the suit.

“By tarnishing (Sheindlin's) reputation as a fair-minded and good judge of character and facts, (Accelerate360's) lies have injured (Sheindlin) by deterring viewers from watching her shows,” the suit says. “These lies have injured and, as they continue to circulate, continue to and will injure, (Sheindlin) by discouraging parties from bringing their disputes before her."

National Enquirer published that Judy Judy had Alzheimer's disease

Sheindlin, who hosted the syndicated "Judge Judy" through 2021 and now hosts "Judy Justice," had past issues with the National Enquirer.

The news outlet retracted articles and apologized in 2017 after they falsely claimed Sheindlin cheated on her husband and suffered from Alzheimer's disease and depression, the complaint says.

In Rome, Adams Sees a Model for Helping Migrants Assimilate

The mayor praised the work of a migrant welcome center, which he visited at the end of a three-day trip, during which he also met with Pope Francis.

Eric Adams, wearing a dark suit and tie, stands in a pew in a basilica with rows of worshipers beside and behind him.

By Jeffery C. Mays

Reporting from Rome and Rocca di Papa, Italy

It didn’t take long for Mayor Eric Adams of New York to articulate what he liked about a welcome center for migrants and asylum seekers that he visited on Sunday in Rocca di Papa, a town about 15 miles outside Rome.

“In two months they’re going from migrant to participating in society,” Mr. Adams said after a 30-minute tour of the center, where migrants from countries including Syria and Sudan are processed, take Italian lessons and receive health care before being sent out for job opportunities.

The mayor, who has called on the federal government to expedite work permits and relocation assistance for migrants, repeated that appeal after visiting the center, which is run by the Red Cross and receives funding from the Italian government. He said he wanted help from the Biden administration to develop something similar in New York, where more than 190,000 migrants have arrived over the last two years.

Mr. Adams’s visit came on the last day of a three-day trip to Rome , where he met Pope Francis at the Vatican and spoke at an international conference on peace. The trip was a brief respite from varied troubles at home — protests over the Israel-Hamas war, a federal investigation into his campaign’s fund-raising, lagging poll numbers and possible challengers in next year’s primary — and Mr. Adams said it had inspired him and given him ideas that he would use in New York.

“The big takeaway for me is the similarities of these cities,” he said.

The mayor was received warmly in Rome: On Saturday, his often-used line comparing New York to other cities — in this case, “New York is the Rome of America” — drew applause. On Sunday, a child asked for his autograph.

“He seemed energized and refreshed,” said Frank Carone, the mayor’s former chief of staff and adviser who accompanied him on the trip and also greeted Pope Francis.

Indeed, Mr. Adams kept a packed schedule. On Sunday, he visited several houses of worship, joining a Mass at the Basilica of San Bartolomeo all’Isola before donning a skullcap and walking to the Great Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter. Finally, he visited the city’s mosque and Islamic cultural center.

“People of faith is needed as much as we need a government,” said Mr. Adams, who speaks often about how his Christian faith informs the way he governs.

In the Jewish Quarter, Mr. Adams stopped to view a poster with images of Israeli hostages in Gaza and reiterated his strong support for Israel.

“Bring the hostages home; destroy Hamas,” Mr. Adams said. “That is what must be done.”

The crowd broke into applause as the mayor jumped into a car headed to the Islamic Center. Back home, some critics, who have said the mayor has not been outspoken enough about the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, wondered whether Mr. Adams had truly absorbed the antiwar message that the pope conveyed at the conference.

In addition to speaking at the conference, the World Meeting on Human Fraternity, which was sponsored by a foundation founded by Pope Francis, Mr. Adams met on Saturday with the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, and visited the site of a new underground metro station at the ancient Colosseum.

But the reality of being the mayor of the largest city in America began to creep back in on Sunday. During a virtual news conference, Mr. Adams was asked about the fatal police shooting of a man 4,000 miles away, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of East Flatbush. And it seemed that the mayor’s frenetic schedule might have caught up with him.

During his visit to the migrant center in Rocca di Papa on Sunday morning, Mr. Adams was coughing. By the afternoon, the mayor had canceled his visit to the Community of Sant’Egidio, another group helping to integrate migrants into Italy, because he was sick, organizers said they were told.

The last of the mayor’s virtual news conferences, which he had held daily during his trip, was delayed by 30 minutes, and Mr. Adams coughed throughout the session. He blamed air conditioning for his cold.

Though Italy has struggled to handle its own influx of migrants , Claudio Betti, assistant to the president of the Community of Sant’Egidio, said he believed that his organization could help inspire New York as the city confronts the challenges posed by the migrant crisis.

At the group’s building in the Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, migrants of more than 118 different nationalities studied Italian, a prerequisite to gaining residency or citizenship.

Some lived at the building. One migrant from Afghanistan said she had become fluent in Italian after studying there for almost two years.

“The idea is full integration,” Mr. Betti said. “Otherwise we would be creating more problems, not solving them.”

The group has a branch in New York that has also been working with migrants. At the news conference on Sunday, Mr. Betti invited Mr. Adams to visit it and said he hoped they would find ways to work together.

Mr. Adams, through sniffles, said he hoped to “continue to have that collaboration” back in New York.

Trump gets by with a little help from his friends during New York hush money trial

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), vice president hopeful North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, House Speaker Mike Johnson, former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) joined the former president in court Tuesday morning.

NEW YORK — Former President Donald Trump has to appear in a Manhattan criminal courthouse four days a week. He has complained about the proceedings and how they impact his 2024 campaign efforts. So, he's bringing friends to make the days a little better.

From Texas to Florida and Ohio to Alabama, Trump's allies have made a trip to New York to attend part, or whole days, of Trump's historic criminal trial. This is the first criminal trial against a sitting or former U.S. president.

Trump has solidified his status as the leader of the Republican Party. As he runs for president for a third time as the party's top contender, he utilizes the courtroom as just another stop on the campaign trail, even as it has kept him out of the traditional campaign arena.

His campaign regularly sends out fundraising emails, falsely boasting that he has "stormed" out of the courtroom after unfavorable rulings and he brings his closest allies to the courtroom itself.

Still, all guests volunteer to come to court to support their friend, President Trump, and are not invited by the campaign, according to a Trump campaign official.

The biggest crowd came on Tuesday, when House Speaker Mike Johnson, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.), vice president hopeful and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy flanked the former president. Standing behind Trump as he spoke to reporters outside the courtroom, the guests enjoyed Trump's praise.

"I do have a lot of surrogates and they are speaking very beautifully," Trump boasted. "They come from all over, and they're highly respected and they think this is the biggest scam they've ever seen...election day cannot get here soon enough."

Johnson, who came into the courthouse with Trump and the others, did not enter the courtroom itself and instead delivered remarks outside in defense of his friend, Trump.

"The system is using all the tools at its disposal right now to punish one president and provide cover for another," Johnson said. "They're using this trial as a hook. It's so corrupt and everybody knows it."

The entourage arrived on the second day of Michael Cohen's witness testimony . Once also a staunch Trump "protector," he testified to Trump's knowledge and involvement in hush money payments made to an adult film star and the reimbursements paid to Cohen that constitute 34 felony charges of falsified business records.

U.S. Senator from Ohio, J.D. Vance, speaks with members of the press during a press conference in Collect Pond Park on the 16th day of the hush money trial of former President Donald Trump in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, U.S., on Monday, May 13, 2024.

These are also not his first high-profile political guests. To kick off Cohen's testimony, Trump came with the company of Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.), Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall and Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird.

Trump again said his guests came "to show up, they view this as a scam," noting that among his guests were some legal experts, including acknowledging Bird as one of them.

Outside the courtroom, Vance said he was there to show up and support "for a friend."

"What's going on inside that courtroom is a threat to democracy," Vance said, accusing the "sham trial" of being politically motivated.

Meanwhile Tuberville called the courtroom "depressing" and said it is putting Trump through "mental anguish," reiterating that he was here for his friend.

Last week, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) came for the morning of the second day of questioning for adult film star Stormy Daniels. Later on Fox News, Scott also said he supported his friend and called the trial political persecution. Before that, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton joined Trump.

Eric Trump, one of the former president's sons and current executives of the Trump Organization, has been the only family member to regularly attend the proceedings. Tuesday's group also brought in Lara Trump, who now co-chairs the Republican National Committee.

Unlike his past civil trials in the Big Apple, for this criminal trial, Trump is required to attend each day in person — although the judge has granted permission for special absences such as his son Barron's graduation during which court will not be in session. The former president has vowed to attend court during the day and travel to campaign events at night — he has taken days off court to do Midwest rallies and other events nearby, including in the city.

Meanwhile, Trump speaks to the press assembled outside the courtroom daily. He used his time in front of cameras to be vocal about his opinions on the judge , court staff, the public officials bringing charges against him and the cases . He also uses these appearances to talk about the issues he is running on, like the jobs report, foreign policy and congressional debates.
